FIRST IMPRESSIONS

LISTEN UP: I'M FEELING GOOD

LOOKING AT LANGUAGE: SIMPLE PRESENT TENSE

We use the simple present tense when we talk about … u something that is true in the present.

I live in Lund. u something that happens regularly in the present. EXAMPLE: I play ice hockey every Wednesday. u something that is always true. EXAMPLE: The earth moves around the sun. EXAMPLE:

The simple present tense is pretty easy as the endings are almost always the same. Only in the third person (he, she, it) do things get a little complicated. For most verbs we just need to add an ‘s’. E XAMPLE: I play basketball. Erika plays basketball. I play

we

you

you play

play

he/she/it plays

play

they

play

If the verb ends with –s, -x, -ch or –sh we add ‘es’. u  EXAMPLE: Susan kisses her grandmother. If the verb ends with a consonant + y, we replace the ‘y’ with ‘ies’. u  EXAMPLE: I cry when Bristol Rovers lose a match. Carina cries when Luleå HF lose a match. The verbs ‘do’ and ‘go’ also take ‘es’ in the third person (does and goes).

Now add the correct form of the verb to these sentences. EXAMPLE:

Sharon wants to get to know her new pupils. (want)

1. The children ........................................................................ to get to know their teacher. (want) 2. I ........................................................................ her enthusiasm. (like) 3. Alexander ........................................................................ Caravaggio’s paintings. (love)

8

4. I ........................................................................ bass guitar in a band. (play) 5. Sophie ........................................................................ she knew what to do in the future. (wish) 6. Lewis often ........................................................................ to the cinema. (go) 7. I ........................................................................ if I can channel her energy into her work. (wonder) 8. Olivia and her dad ........................................................................ motorbikes. (like) 9. Lewis ........................................................................ when he ........................................................................ a sad film.

(cry/watch)

10. Jack ........................................................................ to be a journalist so he can interview politicians.

(want)

TIME TO WRITE: A PRESENTATION

You read the six presentations written by Sharon’s pupils. Now it is your turn. Write a short presentation for your teacher. You can write: u something about your family: I live with my … u something about your hobbies: Every Saturday I play … u something that can be good to know about you: I'm allergic to ... u something about your hopes for the future: I want to be a … TIME FOR RESEARCH: INSPIRING PEOPLE

1. Find out three interesting facts about the two inspiring people in

the text. Be ready to share them with your classmates. 2. Find out three unusual facts about someone who inspires you. It can be a famous

LOOKING AT LANGUAGE: QUESTIONS WITH DO/DOES

It is very easy to make questions in the simple present tense. I like Caravaggio. Do you like Caravaggio? There are two simple answers: Yes, I do. No, I don’t. u

EXAMPLE:

In the third person singular (he, she, it), we use ‘does’ for questions. Does your teacher eat meatballs? There are two simple answers: Yes, he/she does. No, he/she doesn’t. u

EXAMPLE:

Here is the full table with the questions with ‘do’ or ‘does’. Do

I, you

play soccer?

Does

he, she, it

Do

we, you, they

play soccer?

Add ‘do’ or ‘does’ to the following questions. Then ask the questions to your classmates. 1. .......................................... you live in Enköping? 2. .......................................... your teacher live in New York? 3. .......................................... Lewis play the bass guitar? 4. .......................................... Alexander play ice hockey? 5. .......................................... Barry and Emily like ice hockey? 6.

T P TIME TO WRITE: AN E-MAIL

There are two more of Sharon’s pupils that need advice. ryan :

Hello, I’m Ryan and I really want to be a gymnast. I realise it is not a real job but I would love to go to the Olympic Games and represent Britain and hopefully win a gold medal.

alice :

Hi, my name’s Alice. I love reading and I really want to be a writer. I like science fiction and also comedy. In my free time I read as much as I can and I also enjoy learning languages.

Write an email to Sharon, with some great ideas for her and these two pupils to allow them to follow their dreams. You should … u write an introductory sentence, where you say hello and introduce yourself u write two paragraphs (one for each of Sharon’s pupils) u write some encouraging words for Sharon! u write a closing sentence (for example ‘All the best’) and sign your name

Talk to your classmates about your emails. How did you motivate Sharon and her pupils? Share and compare your ideas and be ready to give feedback to the whole class. SPEAK OUT: A DREAM FOR THE FUTURE

In groups of five or six, think about your own dreams for the future. They can be your real dreams or you can invent something. Sit in a circle with one person in the middle. The person in the middle tells the others what their dream is. The others should all say at least one thing each to motivate the person in the middle to go for their dreams. After one minute, another person takes the seat in the middle. Continue until everyone has been in the middle.
