REC BOARD NEWS

A Day in the Life of a Board Chairperson

Spring is a wonderful time of the year. The flowers are blooming and many of our feathered friends are tending to their new hatchlings. It also marks the beginning of Hurricane Season in South Florida. If you have not done so, make sure you are familiar with the City of Sunrise Hurricane Preparedness Plan.

Here at the Recreation District, we have also sprung into action. We have been very busy upgrading and enhancing the pool decks in the satellites and main clubhouse as well. As I type this letter, the trees are being trimmed in preparation for hurricane season.

Spring also signifies our fiscal mid-year at the Recreation District. Many members are not aware of what goes on daily at the District. A day in the life of a Board Chairperson is never a dull moment. It keeps you busy most every day of the week.

A typical day as a Chairperson can be as long as 8 to 10 hours. It may consist of meetings, interviews, invoice approval, analyzing expenses, audit preparation, reviewing bids, returning calls, authoring contracts and agreements, reviewing payroll etc…

The list goes on and on. Why do we do it? We love our community? We are type “A” personalities? We are crazy! There is some debate on the latter. Well, someone has to do it. All of this and we don’t receive a salary. No perks, no free tickets to shows etc….

I personally welcome anyone to shadow us for a day. It’s a great opportunity to see how the District operates. There have been quite a few changes at the District. Many owners have commented positively on the changes. To all of the owner’s who have taken notice and thanked us, we appreciate it.

On a final personal note, as Board Supervisor I have taken an oath to do what is best for the District. I take my fiduciary responsibility very seriously, as well as my peers. I love what I do. I do my best to get the job done. I’ve met wonderful people and made great friends along the way. I work side by side with a great team of Board Supervisors and staff. Drop by and visit us or better yet, come by and enjoy all the wonderful activities that Marian has put together for our community. You will definitely want to come back!

Happy Spring and stay safe.

DISTRICT NEWS

Hello Owners,

Spring cleaning is taking place at high speed here at the Recreation District. The satellites have received the bulk of the cleaning. Pool decks have been pressured washed and painted. Lounges and chairs have been re-strapped. The satellites are looking great but don’t take my word for it, drop by your nearest satellite and see for yourself.

At the main clubhouse there have been some very nice changes as well. The pool deck surface has been painted. It was determined, that rather than re-strapped all the chairs, which were not being used, we would re-strapped 50% of the chairs. The remaining funds that were earmarked to re-straps the other chairs were used to purchase patio furniture for our new party rental area. This area allows owners the ability to have more lively events without disturbing those who want to spend a quiet afternoon at the BBQ area. It’s beautiful area, come by and see it, or better yet, rent it! Also, the tennis court has received an upgrade, with the addition of re-strapped chairs and tables.

For those of you who want to rent overnight lockers in the main clubhouse women’s or men’s bathroom, they are now available for $50 a year. Day lockers will continue to be available for no cost.

Looking ahead, we hope to have the sauna at the main clubhouse repaired and re-opened within the next few months.

Enjoy Your Spring –Yvonne Hepler/Acting District Manager

¿Amamos a nuestra comunidad? ¿Somos personalidades tipo A? ¡Estamos locos!

He conocido gente maravillosa y he hecho grandes amigos a lo largo del camino. Trabajo codo a codo con un gran equipo de supervisores de la junta y personal. Visítanos o mejor aún, ven y disfruta de todas las maravillosas actividades que Marian ha organizado para nuestra comunidad. ¡Definitivamente querrás volver!

Feliz primavera y muchas bendiciones.

Fans are not a magic bullet for beating the heat...

A new study by researchers at the University of Ottawa throws cold water on the idea that fans can effectively cool you down during extremely hot weather events. With severe heat waves becoming more frequent due to climate change, there’s a growing need for safe and accessible ways to keep people cool, especially vulnerable populations like older adults. Fans are often recommended as cheap and easy solutions, but this study suggests they might not be as helpful as previously thought.

Post-doctoral fellow Robert Meade led the research, which was conducted at the Human and Environmental Physiology Research Unit at the University of Ottawa, a unit led by Dr. Glen Kenny, who is a professor of physiology at the Faculty of Health Sciences.

“Fans do improve sweat evaporation, but this effect is not strong enough to significantly lower your body’s internal temperature when it’s already really hot (above 33-35°C).In older adults, who may have a reduced ability to sweat, fans provide even less cooling benefits,” explains Meade. “In fact, even in younger adults, fans only provide a small fraction of the cooling power of air conditioning.” The study recommends that health organizations continue to advise against relying on fans during extreme heat events, especially for older adults and other groups at higher risk of heat stroke and other adverse health events during heat waves. Instead, the emphasis should be on providing access to alternative cooling solutions, such as air conditioning, and on exploring ways to make these options more accessible and environmentally friendly. The research was conducted using “human heat balance” modeling techniques developed in 2015. By extending these models to estimate core temperature under a range of conditions and modeling assumptions, the authors were able to compare the expected effects of fan use under a wide range of scenarios.

“Results from the 116,640 alternative models we produced in sensitivity analyses indicated that fans likely do not significantly reduce core temperature in high heat or match air conditioning cooling. Comparisons with more advanced modeling techniques and laboratory heat wave simulations supported this conclusion,” adds Meade.

Fans are good at providing air circulation and may work in moderate temperatures but are not as effective in extreme heat. Public health authorities have a role to play.

“Keeping indoor temperature cool is important for vulnerable individuals, but cooling strategies like air conditioning can be costly and harmful to the environment. It is crucial that we improve the accessibility and sustainability of air conditioning and other forms of ambient cooling to protect those in need,” says Meade.

“Fans can still have an important role in this, since they can be effective for cooling at lower temperatures, meaning we don’t have to set our air conditioners so low. However, when it gets really hot, a fan alone is not going to cut it.”
