REC BOARD NEWS Hello Neighbors, I hope everyone is enjoying the new look of our monthly magazine. The Recreation District has come a long way in making improvements that benefit the owners and enhance the value of our properties. I would like to thank all the vendors who sponsor our magazine. Their contributions make it possible to produce this publication at a minimal cost to our community. Please take the time to review their advertisements. Use their services when and if possible. Don’t forget to mention that you saw their ad in the magazine. On a final note, the Rules & Regulations have been amended to address restricted areas in the clubhouse, Although the clubhouse is a public facility for the use and enjoyment of our owners and guests, there are areas that, for security and health reasons, are restricted to the public. These areas are clearly identified. Remember violations of clubhouse Rules and Regulations can result in suspension of privileges. We are looking forward to a positive bi-annual financial report. Jorge DelPino, our Treasurer, will provide an update in next month’s magazine.

Dear Residents, With this year being a “Leap Year,” adding one more day to February gives us more time to enhance and improve our District and its amenities. Residents that frequent the gym seem to enjoy the new flooring recently installed. It’s a high-density foam product perfect for gyms. The floor is more comfortable to walk on and is easier on the feet and back. When and if weights are dropped, it can easily absorb the shock. And if a particular area is damaged or needs to be replaced, we can pop out the square(s) and put new ones down — something that is nearly impossible with laminate flooring. JOSEPH MALLEN Sunrise Lakes Phase IV Recreation District District Manager

We recently added two new pieces of gym equipment. A Vertical Knee & Dip station and Fixed Weight Barbell Rack. These units are low profile and don’t take up much real estate in the gym. Dr. Strap, our pool furniture vendor, is working to replace or re-strap chairs and lounges at our Satellite Clubhouses. We’re starting Saturday the 5th and will work our way around the community. The combination of Navy and White looks great by the pool. We are also requesting bids to replace the pool awnings and color coordinating them with the new furniture. Finally, at the time of this publication, it is my hope that the bathroom remodel Satellite 4 is complete. Working through the City inspection process can be tedious, but in the end, Residents will have beautiful and updated bathrooms to enjoy. We appreciate everyone’s patience through this process.

HEALTH NEWS Arthritis: Taking the pain out of driving by Elaine Veltri As we get older, arthritis and other conditions can make driving more difficult. The good news? Many drivers can overcome limitations through the use of vehicle modifications and specialized training. Decreased vision, impaired hearing, slower reflexes and certain diseases that become more common as we age can make driving unsafe. Aging can also affect strength, flexibility, and coordination, which can make it harder to safely control a vehicle, too. Through a driver rehabilitation program, similar to one led by certified driver rehabilitation specialist Ian McClure, many people struggling with age-related health conditions can learn how to continue driving safely. “Issues we commonly see include the inability to grab the steering wheel or fully turn it or difficulties with secondary knobs or switches,” says McClure. “Fortunately, these things can be addressed with vehicle modifications and adaptations.”

Limitations Physical challenges that can make driving difficult or unsafe include: • Stiffness in the neck that makes it hard to look over the shoulder • Leg pain or peripheral neuropathy from diseases such as diabetes that make it difficult to move from the gas to brake pedal • Weak upper arm strength that makes turning the steering wheel quickly and effectively a challenge • Diminished reaction times “There is assistive technology that can be used to correct many of those issues,” McClure adds. Patients who take advantage of this type of program, initially undergo a clinical assessment. If an individual’s only concerns are related to physical limitations, the driver is then assessed on range of motion, grip strength, fine motor coordination, reaction time and other capabilities. Once this assessment is done, patients get behind the wheel with the specialist to determine whether their physical limitations are impacting driving ability. If so, there is adaptive equipment such as hand controls and hand brakes, assistive technology such as blindspot detection and backup cameras and compensatory strategies that can be employed to make driving easier and safer. In many cases, patients need to take the state road test to resume driving independently. McClure says, “the most common thing they tell me when they’re done is that I’ve given them their lives back!” F E B R UA RY 2 0 24
