The Welch Family: Dreams Really Do Come True

By Amanda Epley

S

ule and Cecily Welch’s fairytale romance began in a fitting place – Walt Disney World. The couple met at a recruiting event in Orlando, Florida. At the time, Cecily was working as a Consultant based in Chicago, and Sule was an HR Executive with Coca-Cola in Atlanta. They both had extensive travel requirements for their jobs, but that didn’t stop them from keeping in touch and dating long distance. When they tied the knot, Cecily moved to Atlanta to begin their new life together. The couple has a lot in common, including their choices of study in college. They both earned undergraduate and graduate degrees in Business, Marketing, and Accounting. Cecily is also a CPA and CFP, and she currently operates her own firm after working for large, mid, and small firms in Atlanta. Sule began his career in banking for NationsBank, then shifted to HR and Licensing for Coca-Cola, and later specialized in Marketing for Zep/Acuity Brands. After the tragic death of his boss, who passed away in his forties, Sule decided to follow his passion immediately rather than waiting for the perfect time. In 2004, he began pursuing his dream of teaching martial arts for a living. He has earned instructorships in six different martial arts styles, and he has been training for over 30 years. As the Founder of The Welch Martial Art Experience, Sule shares his passion and expertise with his students in Sandy Springs. Sule and Cecily’s son, Aaron, enjoys playing soccer in the Dunwoody United Methodist Church league. When he’s not

scoring goals on the soccer field, he’s beating his mom and dad at Jenga and Trouble during their family game nights. Aside from martial arts and soccer, their family enjoys swimming, theatre, traveling, and supporting local community events. Although they don’t have any pets yet, Aaron is lobbying for a dog! The Welch Family has lived in the Overton Hills subdivision since 2011. They moved to the neighborhood when they were expecting Aaron. The couple also wanted to relocate closer to Cecily’s office and to expand Sule’s martial art business. At the time, they were able to operate the business out of the basement of their home. They remodeled the unfinished basement to suit their needs, and their neighbors were incredibly supportive. “Not once did a neighbor complain about us having a studio in the house. As a matter of fact, a few even came for classes,” says Sule. “We’ve got great neighbors and great students who are considerate of each other.” Although the martial arts business has since outgrown their house and now operates in a commercial studio in Sandy Springs Plaza, they still see their neighbors on a regular basis. They enjoy spending time together, and they especially look forward to the annual summer social and Halloween party. Sule still remembers Aaron’s first trick-or-treating experience in the neighborhood, when a friend gave him the sound advice to bring a second pumpkin to collect candy. Sure enough, about halfway through their walk through the neighborhood, Aaron could barely carry his pumpkin bucket because it was so full of candy! He had such a great time

May 2017

running after the older kids in the neighborhood then, and he has made some wonderful friends growing up here. Sule, Cecily, and Aaron recently traveled as a family back to where their story began. After hearing about a Martial Arts School Management seminar at Walt Disney World, Cecily convinced Sule that it was the perfect trip – for practical and personal reasons. Not only could they attend the business conference, but they could also take their son to experience the magic of Disney. At five years old, he was the perfect age for his first visit – old enough to remember the trip, but young enough to appreciate the fantasy and whimsy of the park. Plus, the seminar also happened to fall on their fifteenth wedding anniversary in the very spot where they first met. Some stories are simply meant to be. The Welch Family reminds us all that life really can be magical, that hard work pays off in the end, and that it’s never too late to pursue a dream. v

Frustrated by Low Interest Rates?

By Charles Goldberg

I

n today’s low-interest environment, I meet people who are frustrated by the low interest rates they are getting on their cash and investments. a reasonable age? Can we invest our cash to get better yields and income while managing the risks of investing in an uncertain environment? Fortunately, there are now many alternatives available to help generate better yields or more income on your savings. As an independent financial planner, I shop nationwide on behalf of my clients and scour the markets for the best solutions and yields. While some of these investments were previously available to high net worth families and endowments, many are now more widely available. Do your research and work with a financial advisor who is knowledgeable in income solutions and can help you choose investments that are suitable for you. While it certainly pays to consider the traditional sources of investment income as found in bank CDs, laddered bonds, and dividend paying stocks, there are also other alternative sources of investment income to consider. Some of these alternative type investments offer the potential for higher yields than the traditional investments. They include Market-Linked CDs, Principal Protection Notes, Floating Interest Rate Funds, Real Estate Investment Trusts, Preferred stocks and funds, Master Limited Partnerships, and Fixed Annuities. As investors have become starved for higher yields on their cash, these investments have become increasingly popular. Keep in mind that all investments involve certain risks and are not guaranteed unless specified. The above investments can be complex and may not be suitable for every investor. Work with a financial advisor who can explain the benefits, risks, and costs of investing in the above securities. 11 Tips to Help You Improve Your Indoor Air Quality By Dari Payrow

HVAC - when most people think of this term, they move immediately to the heating or air conditioning side of things. After all, you want your home to be comfortable: warm in the winter and cool in the summer. What most people miss is what’s in between - the ventilation process. If the air doesn’t move in and out of a building or home effectively, a variety of things can go wrong. Not only can the environment become uncomfortable, but it can become unhealthy as well. The key is to design the HVAC system and other systems in the home to work together to effectively ventilate and minimize the indoor air pollution that impacts you the most. Homes of yesteryear had little concern for allowing fresh air indoors. If they wanted outside air, they simply left a window or a door open, and the air drifted inside. As we became more knowledgeable and more technologically inclined, we began making our homes more secure and trapping contaminants inside. Couple that with the fact that people now spend almost 90 percent of their time indoors, and you have a situation ripe for disaster. People no longer open windows for fresh air. Because of energy costs, security issues, drafts, dirty air, noise pollution and more, some residential windows rarely crack open all year long. Yet the EPA has shown that air pollutants in indoor levels may be as much as five times more toxic than our outdoor air environment.

Try these 11 tips to improve the ventilation system within your home: 1. If at all possible, avoid placing furnaces, air conditioners, and ductwork in garages or other spaces that can easily draw contaminants into the home. 2. Properly vent all rooms, especially bathrooms, kitchens, and laundry rooms. Use energy-efficient ventilation fans to aid in the process. 3. Properly vent fireplaces, wood stoves, and other heating devices, using outdoor air intakes whenever possible. 4. Vent clothes dryers and central vacuum systems directly outdoors. 5. Never store toxic or volatile compounds in your living quarters. This includes paints, solvents, chemicals, cleaners, fertilizers, and pesticides. 6. Minimize use of combustion sources such as cigarettes, candles, indoor barbecues and grills, and other decorative combustion appliances of vent-free heaters. 7. If you do use high-polluting items in your home, be sure to keep the area well ventilated during the process. These items include home cleaning products, paints, hobby activities, etc. 8. Always use a high-quality filter or air cleaner in your air handling system to keep dirt out of the air and out of your ductwork and heating and cooling components. Change out on a frequent basis. 9. Sealed-combustion, power vented, or condensing water heaters and furnaces are the preferred equipment for homes. Be sure to test natural-draft applications for proper venting if they are used. 10. Distribute a minimum level of outside air throughout your home using a whole-house ventilation system. 11. Invest in IAQ products such as humidifiers, de-humidifiers, UVV and UVC lights, and HEPA air filtration systems. Our service technicians can help you select what is right for your home and family. Bulldog Home Cleaning: High-End Service with a Smile By Amanda Epley

Ruma Singh founded Bulldog Home Cleaning with compassion, determination, and a resolve to making her clients smile when they arrive home. She takes pride in providing a service that helps other people in her community. She decided to start her own company in 2010, shortly after her mother passed away. “I wanted to put my strength, dedication, and determination to succeed toward my own business,” says Ruma. “I am a perfectionist, and I expect to give nothing but my best every single time.” Ruma’s attention to detail is evident in her work, and her clients appreciate how careful and thorough she is. When asked what inspired her business name, Ruma smiled and said that she got the idea from her rescue work with animals. The first dog she rescued was a Pit Bull. Out of concern that the dog might get a negative reputation, Ruma listed him as a Bulldog. The first call she received about the dog was from another rescuer, who informed her that the dog was actually a Staffordshire Terrier, otherwise known as a Pit Bull. She could not help but laugh at the turn of events, and she was glad that her newly labeled Pit Bull found a loving home.

As it turns out, Ruma’s passion for animals extends beyond rescuing dogs in our community. Someday, she hopes to open an animal sanctuary for abused lions and tigers. She envisions having a hotel on the grounds to encourage visitors to stay on site, help educate the public, and provide resources for the care and wellbeing of the animals. Ruma’s nurturing spirit shows in her work ethic and her grateful attitude. “I was able to take care of both my parents, and I am privileged that I was given the opportunity to do so,” says Ruma. “My parents gave me so much love and built my character. I was able to pay them back by taking care of them when they needed me the most.” Ruma enjoys working in Sandy Springs, and she truly cares about her clients. When asked what message she would like to share with the neighborhood, Ruma replied, “Thank you for welcoming me into your community and your homes, and for giving me an opportunity to provide exceptional customer service, always with a smile.” v
