S

usan Stevenson has resided in the Sandy Springs area for over 25 years. She is the proud mother of three children, Bobby, Celeste, and Candice. Susan enjoys spending time with Aiden, her two-year-old grandson, and she is eagerly anticipating the birth of her second grandson, Jax, any day now! As a long-time advocate of natural health and wellness, Susan discovered her passion for herbal remedies when she was a student at Brigham Young University. She attended BYU after serving in

the military as a Chaplain Assistant in Munich for a rabbi, priest, and Lutheran minister. For the majority of her career, Susan has worked as a national manager for Nature’s Sunshine, one of the leading natural health and wellness companies in the world. Although they divorced in 1992 after 14 years of marriage, Susan and the late Robert Stevenson remained friends and business partners in Nature’s Sunshine. Robert was the first African American student body officer at BYU, and he was featured in the New York Times in 1976. Susan and their children have carried on his legacy by continuing to grow the family business. The Stevensons pioneered the introduction of alternative herb shops in the United States. Beginning on their front porch in 1983, they created a $50 million herb business in less than five years. Over the past three decades, Susan and her family have helped the natural health industry rise from counter culture to mainstream acceptance. Five years ago, Candice founded Clean Start, a holistic spa that also provides quality herbs from Nature’s Sunshine. Clean Start is a one-stop shop for total body cleansing, providing signature detoxifying spa treatments and natural herbal supplements. Susan and Bobby have been involved in the development of Clean Start by opening and managing new store locations. Bobby graduated from West Georgia College and now serves as a Marine Major. He is soon to be appointed as the Commanding

Resident Feature Officer in Chicago over all the recruiting stations. He is also coowner of Clean Start – Colonic Spa and Herb Shop in Midtown and Johns Creek with his sister, Candice. Bobby lives in Virginia Beach and travels to Atlanta fairly often to manage the stores. He and Susan are looking forward to attending the annual convention for Nature’s Sunshine in Orlando soon. Celeste graduated from Georgia State University and now works for an invention company in Miami. She is actively involved in her church and enjoys volunteering in her neighborhood. Candice also graduated from Georgia State University. Prior to founding Clean Start, she worked as a real estate agent for a few years and also owned a modeling company. Currently, in addition to co-owning stores with Bobby in Midtown and Johns Creek, Candice owns the Clean Start – Colonic Spa and Herb Shop in Miami. She and her husband, Jermane, just moved into a home in Marietta. Their son, Aiden, is a great singer and is excited about becoming a big brother soon. Susan and her children are active members of their communities and enjoy spending time together. They are all devoted Falcons and Braves fans, and they cheer on their Atlanta teams whenever they can. Bobby competes in triathlons and enjoys biking and snowboarding in his spare time. Candice has a flair for event planning, from fabulous baby showers to elegant family parties.

Susan. “I think they get that from me, coming from a long line of Mormon pioneers who traveled across the United States to settle in Utah.” When asked what her family philosophy is, Susan implored that she raised her children to support each other in their careers, relationships, and spiritual pursuits, but to always be open to constructive criticism. Naturally, Susan has instilled healthy habits in her children from a young age as well, and she continues to emphasize the importance of a healthy diet, exercise, and using quality supplements to overcome health issues. ” v

Do you know a neighbor who has a story to share? Nominate your Susan has clearly bestowed her entrepreneurial spirit upon her children, who have contributed to the growth of their family-owned business. “We are all very hardworking and business minded,” says

Sandy Springs

Sandy Springs: A History of Resilience, Elegance, and Innovation By Amanda Epley

A

lthough the sprawling suburb we call home was incorporated in 2005, the city has a rich, complicated history that precedes its official designation. Hike along the banks of the Chattahoochee River, stroll through the Abernathy Greenway, or drive down Roswell Road, and you will traverse the same paths the first settlers of our city once did, over two centuries ago. Now a pleasant backdrop for sightseeing and a source of recreation for outdoorsy folks, the Chattahoochee River once served a far more practical purpose. The river established a boundary between two major Native American tribes, the Cherokee nation to the north and the Muscogee Creek to the south. Both groups used the river in some capacity for fishing, hunting, and agriculture, according to research conducted by Heritage Sandy Springs. Legend has it that a particular spot in which five springs intersect and flow out of the sandy soil served as a popular trading site. While this claim has not been substantiated, the sandy springs have certainly become an enduring landmark in our community. Between 1805 and 1833, the State of Georgia held lotteries to distribute land, largely in response to the Gold Rush and the subsequent removal of the Cherokee from the region. According to the Georgia Archives, the original Cherokee territory became Cherokee County in 1831, and it was soon subdivided into ten counties: Union, Paulding, Murray, Lumpkin, Gilmer, Forsyth, Floyd, Cobb, Cherokee, and Cass (renamed Bartow). Many families migrated to Georgia from the Carolinas and the Mid-Atlantic states to settle in these counties with the promise of starting a new life. While the controversial land redistribution in Georgia disrupted the region, the Civil War left its own mark on the residents. Young men left home for the first time to join the Confederate States Army, and many were never seen again. Regardless of status or privilege, any and all eligible sons were sent to battle.

8

Atlanta played a pivotal role in the Civil War by serving as the transportation hub and key military supply center for the South. Since the Confederacy was so dependent on the railroads passing through Atlanta, the city became a natural target for Union forces. In the spring of 1864, William T. Sherman became the supreme commander of armies in the West, and he was given orders from Ulysses S. Grant to take the city of Atlanta.

During the first few months of 1864, Sherman and his troops fought several battles against the Confederacy on the northern outskirts of Atlanta, including the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain on June 27. Despite losing this battle, the Union put enough pressure on the Confederacy to instigate the surrender of Atlanta in early September. Union forces reportedly camped along the ridge of Mt. Vernon Highway and split into groups to surround the city of Atlanta from Buckhead, Decatur, Peachtree Road, and Cross Keys. The surrender of Atlanta signified the downfall of the Confederacy and a monumental victory for the Union. Before his departure on his famous March to the Sea, Sherman ordered that all of Atlanta’s military resources be burned. While the fire was intended to destroy the clothing mills, railway yards, and munitions factories, it quickly escalated beyond control, leaving a wake of destruction that would take years to amend. In an act of collective resilience in the midst of struggle, the city of Atlanta rose from the ashes. The city adopted the phrase, “Resurgens,” which is Latin for “rising again.” The Phoenix, a mythical bird that is reborn from its own ashes, became an iconic symbol of this sentiment. You can still find Phoenix imagery around Atlanta today, most notably with the bronze statue named, “Atlanta from the Ashes” in Woodruff Park. The statue depicts a woman holding a Phoenix above her head to illustrate the rebirth of Atlanta after the Civil War to become one of the major metropolitan cities in the nation. During this time, the majority of the land to the north of Atlanta was rural, as most of the families were subsistence farmers. Imagine a simpler Sandy Springs, with unpaved roads, rustic cabins, and horsedrawn carriages. The residents of our city during this time would marvel at the very notion of GA 400! The key industries that spurred the development of this region were the saw, grist, and merchant mills in Roswell and Cobb County. These mills leveraged ferryboat operations along the Chattahoochee River, and many of the roads along the Chattahoochee still retain the names of the early settlers, including Power, Abernathy, Hardeman, Heard, Hilderbrand, Jett, and Austin, among others. In the 1920s, the Sandy Springs region became a sought-after

April 2017

location for wealthy Atlanta residents to construct their summer homes, many of which are still standing today. Several of the familiar streets and landmarks in Sandy Springs are named after prominent families in the area during this time, including the Hammonds, the Darymples, the Burdetts, and the Spruills. Despite their newfound prosperity, the residents of the Sandy Springs region were not shielded from the Great Depression in the 1930s. The stock market crash resulted in a sudden economic spiral of closing banks and factories. Many people lost their jobs and their savings, with no immediate prospects for a better future. Since cash was scarce, residents relied on the bartering system to secure necessities for their families. Neighbors and friends pulled together and looked out for one another during these tumultuous times. Conditions began to improve once again with the election of Franklin Delano Roosevelt in 1932 and the adoption of the New Deal. When the United States entered World War II in 1941, the country faced a sudden demand for war materials. The swift resurgence of factories restored the industrious spirit of the region. After the war, many of the factory employees and service members were able to purchase their first homes. On March 1, 1941, after years of ambiguity, the Post Office declared its name to be Sandy Springs. Although the region was commonly recognized and referred to as Sandy Springs, the city did not become officially incorporated until 2005. Initiatives to incorporate Sandy Springs arose in 1966 in response to the proposed annexation by the city of Atlanta. Eva Galambos led the movement and achieved overwhelming support in June 2005, when 94 percent of residents voted in favor of incorporation. Prior to becoming incorporated, the area depended on a traditional county government model that residents felt did not fully address their needs and concerns. The people of Sandy Springs desired a government more aligned with the community goals and values. The city implemented a non-traditional model by operating as a Public-Private Partnership (PPP), in which nearly half of the City staff is employed by a private company rather than the public sector. This approach resulted in significant savings and “Honest, Efficient, and Responsible” service – the guiding principles of the city’s leadership. The Sandy Springs PPP model has been celebrated and replicated by other local governments. Leaders have traveled to Sandy Springs from across the nation and around the world to learn about our processes. Several other nearby cities have instituted a Public-Private Model since the incorporation of Sandy Springs, including Johns Creek, Milton, Dunwoody, and Brookhaven. With this incorporation, the residents of Sandy Springs have proven to be trailblazers once again. Our community has certainly faced unforeseen challenges and hardships over the years, but the people who call Sandy Springs home have always risen to the occasion. To this day, the city of Sandy Springs exudes a beautiful blend of resilience, elegance, and innovation that unifies, inspires, and distinguishes our community. v
