Robert and Patricia Brown:

A Foundation of Restoration

By Amanda Epley

A

fter meeting on a blind date, Robert and Patricia Brown knew that they were meant to be together. The couple just celebrated their 28th wedding anniversary, and they have worked alongside one another for the past 13 years to run their family business. Robert began his career in the natural stone industry in South Florida in 1993. He and Patricia moved to Atlanta in 2006 to open Cleaner Image Marble and Surface Restoration.

Known in the Atlanta area as the “Marble Whisperer, Robert has a remarkable ability to bring any natural stone material back to its original appearance. Many homeowners are unaware that they can make their granite or marble surfaces look new again. Rather than replacing their original stonework, people have the option to restore and maintain the beautiful surfaces in their homes. Robert and his team specialize in restoring countertops, floors, and showers, among other surfaces.

West Georgia University, and she enjoys working with her father every day. She will eventually run the family business when Robert retires. The father-daughter team has huge goals set for the direction of the company. They have worked diligently to get their family business where it is today, and they will continue to work together to build upon their success. Robert and Patricia enjoy spending as much time as possible with their three daughters and four grandchildren. Robert often travels to Tallahassee to visit Courtney and to go fishing with his son-in-law on the Gulf of Mexico. When the opportunity arises, he and Patricia enjoy traveling to

Robert and Patricia have three daughters, named Courtney, Morgan, and Brittany. Their oldest daughter, Courtney, lives in Tallahassee, Florida. She is a stay-at-home mother of two children and runs two small businesses on the side. Morgan, their middle daughter, is currently finishing her fourth year of her surgical residency program in Augusta, Georgia. Their youngest daughter, Brittany Stewart, has been managing the family business since 2011. Brittany holds a Marketing Management degree from 4

the Florida Keys as well. Patricia is an HGTV guru, and she loves using her home improvement talents anywhere she sees fit. She devotes much of her spare time to helping family members with their home renovation projects. Robert and Patricia’s shared passion for home renovation shines through in their work. When asked what their biggest inspiration has been, they replied, “We are inspired by knowing that there is no other company quite like us. We love seeing the look on people’s faces when they realize their stone surfaces can look new again.” The family takes pride in providing the “wow factor” for their clients, and they get so much joy from making the impossible possible.

7 Benefits Of Installing A High-Efficiency HVAC System By Dari Payrow

W

ant to know the biggest energy hog in your home? It’s your HVAC system. That’s why as a homeowner, making smart decisions about your heating, cooling, and ventilation process can make a difference on your utility bills as well as your comfort levels. If your HVAC equipment is several years old, it may be time to upgrade to a new, high-efficiency HVAC system.

Furnace Cost Savings

Replacing an older furnace with a high-efficiency one can begin saving you money on your very first bill. Furnaces are measured by AFUE (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency). Many older systems operate around 65 percent AFUE, meaning 35 percent is simply lost up the flue pipe. High-efficiency units operate at 93 to 98 percent AFUE, meaning less is being wasted every time it’s put to use. That means it’s better for the environment and your pocketbook.

AC Cost Savings

Just like your furnace, replacing an older, inefficient AC can save you big time. Air-conditioning systems are measured by SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio). The higher the SEER, the bigger the savings. Older systems operate in the 8 to 10 SEER range. New units range as high as 25 SEER; this will save you 8 to 10 percent per increased SEER point. High-efficient systems will pay for themselves over the unit’s lifetime, providing you with cool, dry, and most of all – affordable air.

Comfort

Because of newer technology, today’s HVAC equipment produces more even heating, helps maintain a constant temperature in every room in your home, provides consistent levels of air flow, and has superior humidity control. All of that adds up to a more comfortable home to live in.

Airflow

High-efficiency systems have variable speed motors that ensure airflow at the perfect level throughout your home. Variable speed motors increase the static pressures in your ducts, giving you more 6

air at each register. Along with better airflow, variable speed motors operate at super energy-efficient levels, allowing you to run your fan year round, filtering the air constantly without a major jump in the power bills. Better airflow means more comfortable temperatures in every room, which helps keep the air healthier as well.

Noise Older models begin to shake, rattle, and roll every time they start a cycle. Today’s modern equipment has sound absorbing materials in place that ensure your equipment is felt but not heard. Environmental Impact

If going green is important to you, an upgrade will point you in the right direction. High-efficiency systems use up to one-third less fuel than older models, which means they help conserve more of our natural resources.

Options

High-efficiency systems come with a variety of options. They come with programmable thermostats to help control temperatures throughout the day. They offer the newest in technology, which can introduce everything from solar to geothermal technology into your home. Your priorities can lead the way to install the best equipment for your situation.

Increased Resale Value

Thinking of selling your home in the next few years? A new highefficiency HVAC system can give your home the leading edge. Prospective homebuyers look for benefits, and this can be a major checkpoint on their list. And by installing now, you can easily show the difference it makes in the utility bills. Is now the time to replace your HVAC equipment? To help you make the best decision, we’re happy to evaluate the equipment you have and show you the best options for your home. Give us a call today. IT’S SMART TO STAND By EMMA RIEHL

Here’s how to banish inactivity in the workplace, improve your overall wellness, and increase your energy levels:

These days, you might feel like every activity is associated with health risks and warnings. Though it may seem discouraging, these warnings are actually very helpful and are often backed by some serious science. New research helps us learn new preventative measures for ensuring our long-term health. A recent study outlines the health risks associated with prolonged sitting. Our bodies aren’t designed, so to speak, to be inactive for extended periods of time. When we sit and watch television, work at a desk, or drive a vehicle, our bodies dramatically decrease the breakdown of sugars and fats, resulting in a shocking 125 percent increase in the risk of cardiovascular disease or heart attack1. As if that’s not discouraging enough, it seems that merely adding a couple hours of gym time to your week doesn’t really help. What does help, though, is breaking up your periods of inactivity by walking or standing while you work.

1. Stand while you work. Standing desks are all the rage, and you can install them in a cinch. Research proves that the muscles activated by simply standing dramatically increase your body’s metabolism of sugars and fats. 2. Walk at work. Instead of having regular meetings with your coworkers in the conference room, take a walk outside or through your departments. 3. Take small walk breaks. Every hour or so, get up and walk around a bit. Take a lap around your office floor, or walk outside for some fresh air.

Our bodies aren’t designed, so to speak, to be inactive for extended periods of time.

“Too Much Sitting: The PopulationHealth Science of Sedentary Behavior.” Exerc Sport Sci Rev. 2010 Jul; 38(3): 105–113.

1

4. Actively watch television. If you just can’t go without your favorite shows or the nightly news, try viewing them while exercising on a treadmill or elliptical for 30 minutes.

5. Be aware of your activity levels and try to stand, not sit, as often as you can. You’ll love the increased metabolism, energy, and the overall improvement of your health.

Vodka Sauce BY JORDAN KING

This sweet pink sauce was a local favorite when I lived in New Jersey. Despite it being absolutely delicious, I have yet to see it used in any other part of the world with the same frequency. Give it a try for a simple and tasty change of pace. Penne and vodka sauce was a standard staple out east. It also goes wonderfully with both shrimp and meatballs.

ingredients 1 small shallot, chopped 2 cloves of garlic, peeled and chopped 2 cups of cream 4-6 cups of spaghetti sauce, homemade or premade 1 shot of vodka, optional 1 tsp of crushed red pepper

directions In a saucepan, sautĂŠ the shallot and garlic until tender. Add cream and stir frequently until thickened. Add sauce and stir until combined. Let simmer for about 20 minutes. Add a shot of vodka and let simmer for 10 more minutes. Serve hot over any pasta and/or meat combination. Prep time: 5 minutes Cook time: 30 minutes Serves: 6
