Meet Dr. Hirsh, Our Neighborhood Vet By Amanda Epley Dr. M. Lance Hirsh has been practicing veterinary medicine in the Buckhead and Sandy Springs area since 1992. After graduating from the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine in 1991, he founded The Veterinary Center of Buckhead, an independent practice near his hometown. Dr. Hirsh attended the University of Georgia as an undergraduate as well, where his field of study was physics.

Lance and Teresa moved to Grant Park after they got married in 2005, and they have previously lived in Buckhead and Sandy Springs. Lance grew up in Chastain Park, and he is committed to staying and serving our community. He enjoys being near downtown, and he has been the president of his HOA for 12 years.

Dr. Hirsh and his wife, Teresa, live in Grant Park with their daughter, Molly, who is a Pre-Medical student at NYU. The Hirsh household also includes two French Bulldogs, Teddy and Gus-Gus, and a Moluccan Cockatoo named Sweety Poo. Dr. Hirsh is actively involved in the Atlanta Humane Society, PALS Atlanta, and the Los Cabos Humane Society. His favorite hobbies include cooking, traveling, and running. As an avid runner, he just completed his twelfth full marathon in Paris last year. He and Teresa travel to France every year, and they try to add a new destination each year as well. 4

Expert Contributor for long-term care. One option you have is to purchase an LTCI policy. However, LTCI is not for everyone. Whether or not you should buy it depends on a number of factors, such as your age and financial circumstances. Consider purchasing an LTCI policy if some or all of the following apply: • Y ou are between the ages of 40 and 84 • You have significant assets that you would like to protect • You can afford to pay the premiums now and in the future • You are in good health and are insurable

How Does LTCI Work?

Do I Need Long-Term Care Insurance for Myself and/or My Parents? By Charles Goldberg, CPA, JD, MBA

I

t’s a fact: People today are living longer. Although that’s good news, the odds of requiring some sort of long-term care increase as you get older. And as the costs of home care, nursing homes, and assisted living escalate, you probably wonder how you’re ever going to be able to afford long-term care. One solution that is gaining in popularity is long-term care insurance (LTCI).

What is Long-Term Care? Most people associate long-term care with the elderly. But it applies to the ongoing care of individuals of all ages who can no longer independently perform basic activities of daily living (ADLs)--such as bathing, dressing, or eating--due to an illness, injury, or cognitive disorder. This care can be provided in a number of settings, including private homes, assisted-living facilities, adult day-care centers, hospices, and nursing homes.

Typically, an LTCI policy works like this: You pay a premium, and when benefits are triggered, the policy pays a selected dollar amount per day (for a set period of time) for the type of longterm care outlined in the policy.

Most policies provide that certain physical and/or mental impairments trigger benefits. The most common method for determining when benefits are payable is based on your inability to perform certain activities of daily living (ADLs), such as eating, bathing, dressing, continence, toileting (moving on and off the toilet), and transferring (moving in and out of bed). Typically, benefits are payable when you’re unable to perform a certain number of ADLs (e.g., two or three).

What’s It Going to Cost? The cost of LTCI depends on many factors, including the type of policy that you purchase (e.g., size of benefit, length of benefit period, care options, optional riders). Premium cost is also based in large part on your age at the time you purchase the policy. The younger you are when you purchase a policy, the lower your premiums will be.

Why You Need Long-Term Care Insurance (LTCI) Even though you may never need long-term care, you’ll want to be prepared in case you ever do, because long-term care is often very expensive. Do not rely on Medicaid--you would have to exhaust a large portion of your life savings to become eligible for it. And since HMOs, Medicare, and Medigap don’t pay for most long-term care expenses, you’re going to need to find alternative ways to pay 6

June 2017

Many insurance companies have stopped offering new long-term care policies due to skyrocketing healthcare costs. Since these costs are going up, it pays to purchase a policy with lower premiums now. As a financial professional, call me so we can help you determine the best policy for yours or your parent’s needs and budget. Securities offered through Triad Advisors, Inc. Member FINRA/ SIPC. Whether a couple is short on time or money, has small children or just a desire to stay home, dates out of the house can be out of the question. Luckily, that doesn’t mean that date night can’t happen. Every now and then, it is fun and romantic to set aside time to do something out of the ordinary, even if it does not involve leaving the house.

Look through photo albums or pop in your wedding video and enjoy reliving timeless memories.

If kids are in the mix, feed them dinner and put them to bed. When the house is quiet, cook a meal together and enjoy it just the two of you.

Ideas for Dates In:

Make a platter of your favorite snacks or pop some homemade kettle corn on the stove and cozy up for a movie.

Create a slumber party by piling blankets and pillows on the floor. Feeling really creative? Build a fort!

Get artsy. Grab a canvas and some paints and put your hands to work creating a piece of art together.

Pick a new game to play and pair it with a glass of wine or homemade hot chocolate. Borrowing a game from friends is an easy way to test it out without the investment. Pick a theme and plan the night around the theme. Enjoy Mexican food and margaritas and then watch the 1960s classic Macario.

5 Things That May Be Living in Your Ductwork By Dari Payrow

I

n most cases, your home’s ductwork tends to be an “out of sight, out of mind” system. As long as we have heat in the winter and air conditioning in the summer, we ignore the process.

Yet, we care about the air we breathe – which makes indoor air quality important. Simple actions like changing your air filter on a regular, monthly cycle can help significantly with the quality of your indoor air. But what about your ductwork? If your ductwork was improperly installed, has collapsed over the years, or simply has cracks and leaks after years of use, the odds are good that contaminants are present in your ductwork.

Dust Mites

Dust mites love humid conditions. They feed on flakes of shed human skin. Therefore, our homes are one of their favorite places to live. Although regular cleanings like vacuuming the carpets and washing the bedding can keep them out of your living areas, if you ignore your ductwork, you’re giving them a place to thrive. Dust mites are one of the leading causes of asthma and allergies worldwide. Since they are barely visible to the human eye, you won’t be able to see them lying around, accumulating in your living quarters. Keeping your ducts sealed and in proper working condition, with regular cleanings especially before the summer and winter months, will keep your home clean and help prevent air contamination.

Pollen

When pollen counts are high, it’s almost impossible to keep it out of your home. These tiny granules are produced by a variety of plants: ragweed, grass, flowers, and trees have all been known to trigger seasonal

Sandy Springs L iving

allergies. Once pollen enters your home, it settles in places it can thrive – like your ductwork. It lingers there, impacting your air quality and potentially aggravating your allergies.

Pet Dander

We love our furry friends; they are an important part of our lives. Yet pet dander is a huge issue, especially if you have multiple pets. Dander is comprised of tiny, microscopic flecks of skin shed by your animals, in much the same way as dust mites. They are also just as easily sucked into your heating and cooling system and can linger in your ductwork indefinitely.

Bacteria

When you or a family member gets sick, bacteria is released into your home’s environment. It transports into the air and settles in a variety of places, including your ductwork. While you can clean and disinfect faucets and countertops, ductwork is often ignored – so bacteria can settle in and potentially impact your indoor air quality.

Mildew and Biological Growth

Mildew and biological growth thrive in wet and humid conditions. With the high humidity conditions we face here in Georgia, both are commonly found in our homes. If there is a leak in your roof left undiagnosed, for instance, biological growth can quickly occur. It can make its way into leaky and unsealed ductwork, impacting your air quality. If you take the time to focus on improving your indoor air, make sure you include one of the most important checks you can make throughout your home. Cleaning your ductwork now at the start of the summer season will ensure your indoor air quality is as clean as it can be. v 11
