Meet The Kaufman Family By Amanda Epley

recently joined Dunwoody Country Club, where Nancy plays on an ALTA and USTA tennis team and Mark regularly plays golf. Justin enjoys biking around the neighborhood and socializing with all of their neighbors, and he has never met a stranger.

After living in Brooke Farm for 22 years, they moved to Ball Mill Place on Dunwoody Club Drive so their teenage son, Justin, could have neighbors closer to his age. They love the location, and they enjoy being a part of such a warm, friendly neighborhood. They

Nancy earned her Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a Major in Finance and a Minor in Accounting at the University of Florida. She has over twenty years of experience in the factoring industry, and she had the unique opportunity to learn from the ground up about the industries of carpet, apparel, and furniture while lending against both account receivables and inventory.

ark and Nancy Kaufman met at a charity fundraiser held at Rupert’s called “The Bash on the Balcony,” and they have been celebrating together ever since. Their first date was a Braves game, and they ended up on national television. The couple just celebrated their 24th wedding anniversary in October, and they have resided in our community ever since they were married.

During her tenure, while being employed by Bank of America and its predecessor companies, she held both portfolio and credit management roles. Nancy retired from GMACCF. Mark majored in Business Administration and Marketing at the University of Georgia. He worked for twenty years in his family business, Kaufman Supply, which was a wholesale distributor of manufactured housing and apartment supplies. The company was sold in 1998, and he started a marketing company called Branding Iron Marketing. He eventually closed this business in order to pursue real estate, and he currently manages the Kaufman Family Real Estate Portfolio and invests in small developments and rental properties. As a house divided, Nancy is passionate about University of Florida Gator football, and Mark is a University of Georgia Bulldogs fan. Mark also closely follows all of the Atlanta professional teams, and his family has had season tickets to the Falcons and the Braves since 1966, when both teams started in Atlanta. Tennis has been a life-long passion for Nancy, and she currently plays competitive single and doubles tennis. Her other interests include ping-pong, mahj jongg, reading, and writing speeches. This January, Nancy decided to create and manage a closed Facebook page entitled Supporting Our Aging Relatives (SOAR). Its purpose is to connect caregivers with resources for their aging loved ones, including living solutions, medical professionals, legal professionals, caregivers, educational events in the community, and a safe place to share ideas and stories about these unique challenges. Nancy was inspired to create this page after being in the position to support her own parents for the past decade. She and her sister were in crisis mode when their father fell and suffered a massive brain injury, and their lives were turned upside down overnight. They were forced to navigate unchartered territory when their father suddenly needed twenty-four-hour care, and they did not have a support group to provide guidance at the time. With SOAR, Nancy aims to help provide the necessary resources for anyone else who is placed in this difficult position.

garage. He currently collects vintage technology and recycles it into his own creations. He recently established a business with a friend called J-Tech to provide technology repair services. When he’s not building and repairing computers, Justin enjoys mountain biking, cycling, skateboarding, zip lining, and weight lifting. The Kaufman Family also loves spending time with their dog, Coco, a seven-year-old Cockapoo who joined her forever family the afternoon before “Snowpocalypse” in 2011. Coco’s favorite toy is a frisbee, and she loves to run and jump to catch a frisbee while in flight. She is an incredibly social and loving dog. The Kaufmans enjoy traveling together as well. They take annual trips to Hilton Head, and they visit Nancy’s family in South Florida at least twice per year. They also enjoy taking cruises every couple of years. They are grateful that their home is not too far away from their extended family in Florida. Although the Kaufmans have lived in the area for over twenty years, they feel especially at home in their new neighborhood. When asked what makes their neighborhood so special, Nancy said it best: “It puts a smile on our faces and warms our hearts when we turn into our new home knowing we are surrounded by such wonderful neighbors.” v

Nancy also devotes time to helping other families with children who need resources in the special needs community. Mark volunteers in the community as well, and he recently served on the Board of Directors for Jewish National Funds. The Kaufmans are members of Temple Sinai. Nancy became a Bat Mitzvah in 2015 after deciding to learn the Hebrew language. Nancy and Mark’s son, Justin, is also highly involved in community service. He has a natural flair for technology, and he spends countless volunteer hours building custom computers and troubleshooting technology devices for neighbors. Justin built his first functioning computer when he was only four years old by assembling various computer parts that he found in the

By Tori S. Bevens This simple snowflake craft is a variation of the traditional folding technique. It’s also a great activity if your children are learning to use scissors. For a unique group of snowflakes, use different sizes and colors of paper.

Materials:

Instructions:

Cut the sheet of paper in half. Starting at one end, fanfold the paper into ½ inch folds then staple the folded paper in the middle to hold it together. Take your scissors and cut small triangles into the entire folded piece to make the designs in your snowflake. Then, unfold the paper to create a circle and tape both ends together. Hang your snowflakes with a tied string if desired.

SURVIVING THE FITNESS CENTER BY MYRON KUKLA

W

hen you reach 40, you start to ask yourself certain health questions. Things like, “Why is my body making those strange creaking noises?” “What do my feet look like?” and of course the most basic question, “What minimum exercise do I need to do to stay alive?” After spending the last decade believing just doing pushups from the dinner table would be enough to keep me in shape, I decided to join a physical fitness center. The club I joined is called “Workout Till You Drop.” I’ve been going there for about two months and I have to say I feel incredibly exhausted. This club has an exercise machine to tone up every muscle in your body. These exercise machines are so specialized, one machine does nothing but build up my triceps. Triceps, if you aren’t aware, are those muscles on the back of your upper arm that you never use except to make holes for ice fishing.

At the fitness center, I am under the guidance of “Rolfe,” my personal trainer, who is working on developing not only my triceps, but also my biceps, deltoids, brachialis and triceratops. After working on these muscles for several weeks under his guidance, I now know exactly where every one of these muscles is located. I know where they’re all at because they all hurt in their own special way. In the past I’ve tried to set my own exercise regiment. I walked, usually every day from the house to the car, and then of course, back again. I also did cycling. I used to cycle four times a week, a whole quarter mile, to the ice cream shop down the road. I’ve even been known to do laps around the dessert table before making a selection. But then I got serious about exercise. I took up jogging for a while on an indoor track, but I have to admit I found it pointless. No matter how long I ran, I never seemed to get anywhere. I tried a spinning class once. Someone told me it was a great exercise where you work out with a bunch of other people riding stationary bikes. My friend must have been thinking about some other kind of spinning because all my class ever did was spin sheep’s wool into yarn. I didn’t build up any muscles doing this, but I did get a great sweater out of the class. 8

So now I’m a fully registered member of a health club where the motto of the place is “No brain, no pain.” All of the staff in this place look like they could bench press a living room couch. All of the rest of us novice exercise neophytes look like we could sit on a living room couch. Before he started me on my personal training program, Rolfe asked me what goal I hoped to reach at the end of my fitness program. I said I wanted to build myself up to the point I could go on the Jerry Springer Show and defend myself. Rolfe put me on a workout program that included a number of cardiovascular exercise machines that all simulate different types of physical exercise like walking, jogging, climbing stairs and cross country skiing. These are good, but I was hoping they had one that simulates sitting in a Lazy Boy watching TV. I have to spend a half hour several times a week working on things like the “Stairway to Nowhere” and the “Bicycle Ride to No Place.” Both exercise machines give new meaning to the old adage of “getting nowhere fast.” My favorite machine, though, is the Elliptical Fitness Crosstrainer. Using two mechanical footpads, you walk on this machine building muscle and heart strength at the same time. I love this machine. You climb on it and an electric screen asks you to enter your weight, and then suggests you weigh 150 pounds. And I go “150 pounds, yeah, that’s me.” After we play guess the weight game, the machine asks me what kind of course I want to walk and gives options from the fairly easy “Steady Climb” to the more difficult “Himalayan Trek.” The toughest course is called “Forced March through Death Valley.” After reviewing all of the selections, I always pick my favorite “A Walk in the Park” which is a totally flat course, but they took that off the machine. I have to say they’re very conscious of your safety at “Workout Till You Drop.” For example, all of the treadmill machines have safety clips that you hook to your shirt. If you should suffer a heart attack and collapse while using the machine, the clip comes off and stops the treadmill so you don’t get dragged underneath and dismembered.

November 2017

Before Rolfe would let me work out on any of the low impact, weight training machines, he showed me some warm-up, stretching exercises I had to do before the start of each session. I asked him why they are important, and he explained, “They help you limber up so that if you hurt yourself during exercising, you won’t know about it until you go home.” Another exercise tip Rolfe gave me was to always try to work my muscles to the “burn.” The burn, he said, is the point where you’ve exercised your muscles until they are crying out in pain and then you push it even further until your arms fall off. Although I complain now and then, I’m very pleased with my progress at the fitness center. For one thing, I no longer have to wrap duct tape around my arms to simulate muscles. My deltoids have never looked better. And I’ve got my abdominal muscles strengthened to the point where I can actually feel I have abdominal muscles. Plus working out at a fitness center has changed the way I look at my life and many of my bad habits. In fact, before I started working out there, my usual morning breakfast was always something like three eggs, hash browns, toast and coffee. Now I’ve simplified it. Each morning, I start my day with nothing more than three Ibuprofen, an ice pack and Ben Gay. Myron Kukla is a Midwest freelance writer. Things To Do With Kids On A Cold or Snowy Day

By Tori S. Bevens

• Take all the cushions off the couch and build a fort. • Bake cookies or bread together. • Pop popcorn on the stove and curl up with a movie. • Prepare ahead and get more books from the library than normal, read them aloud and then try drawing a character from one of them. • Make a snowman. Surprise your next guests and build the snowman so it is looking into one of the windows of the house. If it’s too cold to go outdoors, find things around the house and create an indoor “snowman” dressed in family members’ clothing. • Turn on some music and have a dance party. • Pour dry beans into a bin or large disposable container and let kids use their imagination. They can drive cars/trucks through them, sort them, pretend to make you a meal with them, etc.

12

• Take on the roles of their favourite characters from a book and “act” like those characters all day. Our house is known for “playing” Little House on the Prairie often. • Cut open paper grocery bags and tape them together to make a large drawing surface. Draw life sized pictures. Masking tape works well for putting the big pieces of paper you create on a wall. • Set up a real tent in the house and fill it with books and toys. Give this play place a creative name to make it even more appealing. • Make hot cocoa on the stove from only milk, cocoa and sugar and tell stories about when your child was a baby. • Plan an indoor scavenger hunt.
