Robyn Elliott:

Rediscovering Roots in Atlanta

Photos: Peter Falkner

By Amanda Epley

R

obyn Elliott is an Atlanta native who views our city through the eyes of a tourist each and every day. In March of 2008, she rediscovered the charm of downtown while entertaining friends who were visiting from Montreal and Zurich. She offered to take them on a casual bike tour of the city, and they were in awe of the city’s beauty and history. Even though they had visited Atlanta several times before, they had never seen or explored the areas that make Atlanta a wonderful city to live. In this moment, Robyn was inspired to start her own local bike tour company and share this experience with others.

After months of exploring scenic routes and studying Atlanta history, Robyn launched Bicycle Tours of Atlanta in 2009. Her tours begin in the Old Fourth Ward neighborhood, located next to the historic Sweet Auburn and beautiful Inman Park neighborhoods, just one mile east of downtown. Robyn appreciates Atlanta’s distinct blend of history and innovation, as the thriving city block that she calls home holds significant roots for her. She lives just outside the front gate of Oakland Cemetery in a loft development called Crown Candy, which was repurposed in 1999. Her grandfather worked for most of his career in the adjacent building, The Southern Cross Bedding Company, which is now known as the iconic Mattress Factory apartments. She has truly come full circle, as she can step outside her front door and see the very building where her grandfather worked his way up to management from the factory floor. 4

Living in the city has been an eye-opening experience for Robyn, broadening her perspective on how to address the needs of disadvantaged people across the country and close to home. After eight years, her business has reached a point where she and her employees can contribute more to the community. Robyn and her team launched a new program this year to partner with non-profit organizations to provide a revenue share opportunity on special event tours. They are currently partnering with the Emerging 100 of Atlanta, the young professional auxiliary of the 100 Black Men of Atlanta, Inc. The Emerging 100 is an organization of high-achieving African American male young professionals who give back to their community by mentoring students at BEST Academy and various universities in Metro Atlanta. “It is so rewarding to be able to support this amazing organization that is making a difference in our Atlanta community,” says Robyn. “We look forward to identifying other worthy organizations to work with in the future.” Although Robyn loves living downtown, she enjoys getting OTP to visit her two brothers, Paul and David. Paul lives in Norcross, and David and his family live in Cumming. Robyn cherishes the time she spends with her brothers and her two nieces, Kallie and Lauren, who live in Canton and Cumming. As a family-oriented person, Robyn has chosen her own tribe in the heart of where her story began and is grateful for the amazing friendships she has developed with the

July 2017

diverse community living in our intown neighborhoods. While cycling has always been an important part of her life, Robyn also enjoys dancing and music. She has traveled all over the country to experience the joy of live music and dance festivals. Her next adventure will be the Rhythm and Roots Festival in Rhode Island on Labor Day Weekend, where she will see The Mavericks, one of her all-time favorite bands. For Robyn, cycling is interwoven with history. Her favorite way to begin a bike tour is by asking participants to share their fondest bicycle memories. She shares her favorite bike memory as well, which happened when she was 9 and her brother David was 11 years old. She and David were riding bikes with the neighborhood kids in the cul-de-sac at the top of the hill. They fashioned a makeshift bike ramp out of plywood and a few bricks. Robyn was on the back of David’s bike, sitting on a rack with her feet balanced on the pegs sticking out from the center of the wheel. Due to the questionable engineering of the ramp, Robyn and David did not land their trick attempt. Robyn’s right foot got caught in the wheel before they hit the ground. What could have easily been a terrible experience quickly became a remarkable one, as David immediately picked up Robyn and gave her a piggyback ride through the neighborhood. She did not even notice her hurt ankle because she realized how much her brother cared for her and wanted to protect her. Owning and operating a bike tour business has taught Robyn many life lessons, both personal and practical. Her motto at work is, “Everything is easy if you know how to do it!” She helps her staff be as prepared as possible during a ride, whether it is being able to change a flat tire in under seven minutes or managing the behavior of motorists on a busy road with guests. One of the greatest rewards for Robyn is when guests tell her how wonderful it is to ride a bike again. Many of her guests exclaim that they had forgotten how fun bike riding could be, and they plan to purchase a bike of their own as soon as possible. While she enjoys entertaining visitors who travel from afar, she takes pride in helping Metro Atlantans appreciate the beauty and diversity of our downtown area neighborhoods and culture. Rather than visiting downtown specifically for an event, OTP guests can slow down and visit the moving historical landmarks like Oakland Cemetery and the King Historic District, along with the impressive urban redevelopment projects like the Atlanta Beltline.

“I am fortunate to call all of these areas my neighborhood,” says Robyn. “To live and ride my bike through these impressive pockets of history and beauty has been a real privilege.” To learn more about Bicycle Tours of Atlanta, call 404-273-2558 or visit www.biketoursatl.com. v

What’s the Best Location for a Thermostat in Your Atlanta Home? By Dari Payrow

F

or most of us, when we purchase our homes, we accept the layout as is. Over time, we start questioning the way some things have been placed. We may wonder why the dishwasher was placed on one side when it clearly would have been more convenient on the other. Or why the laundry room was built so far away from the bedrooms. But what about your thermostat? Even if your thermostat is installed perfectly, if it’s not in the right place, it won’t communicate correctly with your furnace and air conditioner. The thermostat isn’t something that is installed on an empty wall without thought. Instead, your thermostat’s location is something that determines how comfortable and efficient your home’s airflow remains throughout the years. Your thermostat reads the temperature of your home from the site where it is installed. If the temperature in this location is not representative of the airflow in the rest of your home, it will not provide the proper readings to heat and cool your home. If your thermostat is in a warm spot, for instance, it will think your home is warmer than it actually is. This will make the furnace run less frequently, cool spots to exist throughout your home, and a constant battle of fiddling with the thermostat to control the temperature to your liking.

Where are the best locations for a thermostat? • In a central location. Thermostats should be installed in a central location, away from drafts and hot spots. • Out of direct sunlight. If the sun streams through a window and onto your thermostat, it will raise the temperature reading and prevent your HVAC system from operating correctly. • Away from hot or cold sources. The draft of open windows or consistently opened doors will change a temperature. So will a vent blowing warm air on the coldest of nights. A thermostat should be in a location where little air movement impacts the appliance, and fluctuations are well representative of your home’s temperature. • Thermostats should be mounted on an interior wall, never on an exterior wall or an un-insulated wall next to an un-conditioned space. • One of the best locations is by a return air vent; that way the thermostat is reading a better overall room average when the system is running. Have any questions about the best location for your thermostat? Looking to upgrade and have automated controls? We can help ensure your heating and cooling needs are as efficient as can be. MAKE MUD PIES & RUN THROUGH THE SPRINKLERS

On a hot day, cool off with the kids. What better way to be carefree then to get dirty and then play in the sprinklers? Don’t forget: a bucket, a hose and a shovel

By Tori S. Bevens

PLANT A CHILDREN’S GARDEN

BACKYARD CAMPING

The combination of a warm night and a tent in the backyard can only lead to fun. Set out to cancel all the noise. Spend a night “camping” with each child (or more than one at a time). The nice thing is if something goes wrong, you are close enough to home to make it right. Don’t forget: a flashlight, some books and a ton of blankets

PICNICKING

There is hardly anything that says summer better than meals outside, especially meals at the park. Packing up lunch or dinner and heading to the park where everyone can play, roam, enjoy the warmth and share a nice meal is invigorating, and there is something about not having to set or clear the table. Don’t forget: a blanket, sunscreen and a few treats

FEEDING THE DUCKS

Find bodies of water with lots of ducks and geese. Note that the best food to feed these creatures is lettuce, as bread can actually make them sick because of all of the nutrients it is enriched with. Don’t forget: lettuce, a blanket, sunscreen and your best duck impression

TAKE ME OUT TO THE BALLGAME

Whether your closest team is a Little League team, a minor league team or a major league team, there is no shortage of baseball and softball to watch in the summer. Pack some snacks and a blanket and walk or ride a bike to a nearby diamond after dinner a few times a month. Even if your kids are still too young to play on a team, there will be enough action and open space to keep them entertained. Don’t forget: a snack, blanket and a ball for practicing

FIND A MUSEUM

Many towns, even small ones, have museums. Go learn about your local history, pack a picnic and enjoy a day learning about the place you call home. Don’t forget: a notebook for kid’s learning notes and a picnic

Create a small space where your kids or grandkids can plant seeds and care for plants. Whether the plants grow into flowers or produce, there is a lot to learn about natures’ lifecycles. Don’t forget: a small plot of garden, a notebook, seeds, a small shovel and watering can

MAKE YOUR OWN COZY THEATRE

Move the furniture and replace it with a lot of blankets. Pop a giant bowl of popcorn and pick a movie that everyone can enjoy from the floor. Some suggestions: The Land Before Time, Sound of Music, The Sandlot, Wall-E, Babe or Mary Poppins. Don’t forget: blankets, popcorn, water, the DVD and a TV or computer

FIND A NEW (OR OLD FAVORITE) NATIONAL PARK

Find a national park you have not visited or one you have that is a favorite. Take a drive and enjoy nature; go for a hike, swim in the lake, read all the signs and talk to a park ranger to learn something new. Don’t forget: camera, snacks and water bottle

USE THE WHOLE DRIVEWAY TO CREATE A STORY

Get your hands on some colorful chalk and start drawing. Take up the whole driveway and leave no corner unblemished. Don’t forget: sidewalk chalk

Peter Max, Pablo Picasso, Marc Chagall, Itzchak Tarkay, Yaacov Agam, Rembrandt“Fanch Ledan, Linda Le Kinff, and many more.

Packing for a Summer Road Trip: The Essentials By Chelsea Hall

N

othing beats cruising down the interstate with the windows down, a car full of friends and music pouring from the speakers. Road trips are enjoying a resurgence of popularity due to easily accessible maps of popular routes. Follow these simple packing essentials and we promise you will have everything you’ll need on the road. NAVIGATION APP Download a navigation app on your smartphone. MapQuest, Google Maps and Waze are all good choices that offer turn-byturn directions, a must-have feature that lets you keep both hands on the wheel. MAP Yes, we said map. An old-fashioned paper map. For the moment when your charging cable stops working and the battery in your phone runs out. It could happen, and when it does, you’ll be glad you packed this relic.

BACKPACK This is a good idea if you will be doing anything outside. Throw your purse inside and go—many backpacks have lots of compartments for towels, umbrellas, snacks, water bottles, you name it. COOLER Pack plenty of water, string cheese, fruit and trail mix for the road. This will save money since you and your group won’t have to buy snacks at pit stops. But, if you do stop at a farm stand you’ll have a way to keep your purchases fresh. EMERGENCY ROADSIDE KIT & FIRST AID KIT Heavy blanket, emergency flashing lights, jumper cables and medical supplies. Those things we don’t like to think about when we’re having fun, but are glad we packed, should we need them. Your car’s manual, a flashlight and a spare tire are also good ideas. Better safe than sorry. PLAYLIST Create a music playlist on your phone and let your traveling companions take turns playing DJ.

SUNSCREEN This one is obvious for coastal trips if you’ll be stopping at beaches. But if your vehicle is a convertible, has a sun roof or even if you roll your windows down and rest your arm on the door, you might want to lather up. CAR PHONE CHARGER One for every person. You know you’ll be cranky if you can’t Snapchat the sunset or take the perfect selfie for Facebook. SUNGLASSES Eliminate glare on the road and of course, look super cool. TRASH BAG Designate a bag for trash and empty it each time you stop. This cuts down on spills and needing a fresh detail when you return home. It will also keep the peace between the passengers and whoever’s car it is. HOODED SWEATSHIRT Throw it on when the driver cranks up the AC. Bonus: it helps cancel out sunlight if you want to take a nap.

y h t l a He Ice Cream Alternatives By Clarissa Woods

It turns out that indulging in ice cream on a daily basis isn’t healthy for you. It’s sad, but true. While it’s perfectly fine to give in and eat the real thing in moderation, there are plenty of creative ways to enjoy a cold, creamy treat without the added calories and sugar.

Chocolate, Banana & Peanut Butter Blend 2 Frozen Bananas 2 Tbsp. Organic Peanut Butter 2 Tbsp. Chocolate Protein Powder 1 Cup Almond or Coconut Milk ½ Cup Dark Chocolate Chips Blend all ingredients except for the chocolate chips in a blender. Add more almond or coconut milk if the mixture gets too thick to blend. Add the chocolate chips and freeze for at least one hour.

Greek Fro-Yo 2 Cups Plain Greek Yogurt 3 Tbsp. Organic Peanut Butter (or Hazelnut Butter) ½ Cup Dark Chocolate Chips Blend the Greek yogurt and peanut butter (or hazelnut butter) in a blender until smooth. Toss in the chocolate chips. Freeze for at least two hours.

Lemon Orange Sorbet 1 ½ Cups Sugar 1 Cup Water ¼ Cup Fresh Lemon Juice (3 Lemons) ¼ Cup Fresh Orange Juice (1 Orange) 1 Tbsp. Grated Lemon Peel 1 Tbsp. Grated Orange Peel Combine the water and sugar in a sauce pan over medium heat. Once sugar dissolves, remove from heat and add the lemon juice, orange juice, lemon peel and orange peel. Pour the mixture into a 9x9 metal baking pan. Place in the fridge and stir with a fork every half hour for up to three hours or until it is frozen and firm.
