After pleading for rain and moisture due to minimal rainfall in the beginning of our summer months, Mother Nature has provided us with over 28 inches of rain the last 8 weeks. This has had an adverse effect on our golf course maintenance staff, our protocols, and overall usage. In the wake of Hurricane Ian, and our fall season approaching we will be working diligently to improve our course conditions, which will include several outside consultants, to assist our staff with best practices as we move into dormancy
In addition, the board and strategic committee, in conjunction with our professional staff have been reviewing our Capital improvement model. One of our great lessons is that capital spending should not be an every 20 year project while sometimes this occurs out of necessity, good fiscal planning will allow regular capital enhancements, additions, and improvements keeping pace with the changing desires and needs of our membership
More than ever before, our members have different needs and interests. We understand and will adhere to practices that create raving fans, are financially responsible, and are predicated on market conditions. Our goals for 2023 and beyond will address avoiding the peaks and valleys and focus on maintaining a positive and sustainable ongoing momentum.
Finally, as reminder, all ballots for 2023 2025 Board member elections are due no later than Wednesday, October 12 at 5:00pm. This ever important part of our culture is necessary to keep the club relevant for the long term. We will also begin the process of Committee development, if you have a desire to serve your club in a greater capacity, please inquire with me, a fellow board member, or our executive leadership team.
As Fall approaches, and weather improves, please visit the Club calendar, website, and social media pages to see the exciting events planned in the coming month culminating with our annual SJCC tradition, the Oyster Roast!
As always, thank you for the continued support of your Club!
On behalf of San Jose Country Club, our thoughts and prayers go out to these families during this difficult time.
Michael is survived by his wife, Susan and two children, Michael Jr. and Patrick. Michael was a member of San Jose Country Club for over 50 years, beginning his membership in 1971.
James is survived by his wife, Carol and two children, Kimberly Mari & James Michael. James has been a member for almost 50 years, beginning his membership in 1973.
In February 2022, our Club embarked on the first steps with a new operating platform to enhance our communication through a new website and mobile application. However, to date the majority of our membership has not taken advantage of several capabilities the platform has to offer. With increased traffic throughout the Club, we are beginning to increase our security measures and the first step begins with all of you
The Clubessential platform allows members to add a headshot into their profile that will populate across all backend systems. This will allow Club management and staff to be able to enhance your member experience through name personalization, correct charges and security throughout the Club. The system also allows you to add preferences into your account, choose communication groups and update any allergies/dietary restrictions Below you will find details on how to update your profile, add a headshot and add preferences. If you need assistance logging into your account, please contact support at support@sjccjax.com.

All 2022 Guest Passes will expire on 12/31/2022, so please be sure to utilize your existing passes before the year ends.
As we head into the fall season, this (hopefully) means a lot less rain, which will mean fewer days we are cart path only Each week we will have a rotation of cart path only holes When approaching the first or tenth tee a message will pop up on the cart screen to let you know which holes are cart path only For the foreseeable future hole #4 will be added permanently as we try to reduce the stress on the turf Please ask a golf staff member if you have any questions as we are always here to assist you.
In the last 45 days we have had 17.74 inches of rain measured at our weather station located at #11 tee. This only measures a small section of the course, so some areas have received more and some less because of the Florida rain patterns. I’m sure most people have seen it rain on one side the street and not rain on the other, the same is true with the course.
All of this rain and the abundant overcast days have come right on the heels of our last aerification of the year. Thus making it more difficult for the grass to recover. Clouded days and late afternoon rains do not allow for the turf and soil to dry adequately, setting back the recovery process even further Any inadequacies in sunlight, air movement, or soil drainage tend to exacerbate the issues
The GCM staff does many things to try and relieve some of these chronic issues around the course Blowers are installed in the drain blow outs on 4 and 14 greens on a regular basis to clear any excess water from the drain lines This also helps ensure there are no toxic gases building up in the outfall lines Routine fungicide application are made on a 14 to 28 day schedule as called for by the Syngenta Ultra Dwarf Bermudagrass protocol Complete greens soil sampling is done on a routine basis along with spot checks of the margins of damage area Most recently we pull samples to send to Dr Billy Crow at the University of Florida for root knot nematode counts This was done as a check against our previous applications of abamectin which helps control these parasitic nematodes.
We have enlisted the services of MacCurrach Golf construction for additional drainage of several areas including potential cleaning and dredging the ditch on the left side of hole 14. We even do some off the wall things, spot spray hydrogen peroxide on problem areas. It’s a disinfectant and helps add oxygen to the soil profile. We spray bleach on algae spots in the bunker sand, very inexpensive and effective way to kill the algae build up. We utilize a multitude of knowledge from fellow Superintendents, Soil and crop scientists Buford Creech and Dr. Tyler Jacoby, Bayer Crop Science advisor Todd Lowe (former USGA consultant), John Foy, and Madelyn Tappan soil scientist Syngenta are just a few names on our list
In all, we try and check off every box on the list when the weather throws us a curve Sometimes we find that things are not as controllable as we like or feel they should be Rest assured we will continue to keep checking off the boxes on the list

As the Fall season begins and we enter the last quarter of this year, I finally get a chance for some quiet contemplation after a whirlwind summer pool season. I look back fondly at the 19 amazing years that I’ve been privileged to work at San Jose. As many of our long time members know, our Club dynamic is in a perpetual state of evolution and while many of our values and traditions stay firmly rooted, much has changed over the years Younger families are steadily making up more and more of our membership base and maximizing their experience at the Club by regularly utilizing all of the amenities that the Club has to offer. Thanks to that exciting trend, the Club feels as energized and vibrant as ever!
I know however, that there are some members who may tend to avoid the Fitness Center and think of exercise with about as much enthusiasm as getting a root canal. If you feel like I might be describing you, I encourage you to think about utilizing the Fitness Center in the same way you enjoy using any other amenity of the Club with friends! When you make it a priority to get in here with the friends and family who make being a part of this Club so great, it changes the dynamic and turns an activity that you might typically avoid into one that you begin to look forward to. It’s no secret that many people dislike “working out”, but the benefits are undeniable and when you do it with friends and family, the experience becomes a lot more fun. We have everything you need and then some, but it’s you, your friends, and your family that really make our Fitness Center so special So, reach out to everyone you already enjoy spending time with on the golf course, tennis courts, and dining room and make a pact to enjoy some regular time together in the Fitness Center. All of our Fitness staff is ready and available to help with any questions or concerns you may have. We hope to see you in here soon!
As our Club continues in the pursuit of offering the best facilities, programming, and professional staff for the benefit of our members, we are steadily evaluating current offerings and making operational adjustments to remain competitive in our market. To that end, starting November 1st the Club will increase the daily, monthly, and Kid’s Club Dinner childcare rates. The daily drop in rate will be $10/hr per child, the monthly unlimited rate will be $150 for the first child and $75 for each additional child, and the Kid’s Club Dinner rate will be $30 per child. We appreciate your understanding and we look forward to providing an even more fun, enriching, and safe Club experience for all of our youngest members!
