For decades, the San Jose Country Club Ladies Invitational has stood as one of the premier women’s amateur golf events in North Florida. Hosted at our historic San Jose Country Club this invitational blends competitive spirit, camaraderie, and Southern hospitality in a setting that reflects the deep-rooted traditions of the game.
Founded in 1925, San Jose Country Club is home to a classic Donald Ross-designed golf course, revered for its challenging layout, pristine conditions, and timeless character. Dear San Jose Members,
During our recent course closure, our team carried out a series of proactive agronomic practices designed to strengthen the long-term health of the course On the greens, we completed drilling, aerification, quad vertcutting, and heavy topdressing These areas will continue to recover over the coming weeks, with visible improvement expected as the season progresses In addition, the tees and approaches were aerified, verticut, and top-dressed, while the fairways underwent aerification and scalping Looking ahead, we will maintain this momentum with ongoing topdressing of fairways, tees, and approaches as we transition into the fall
Alongside these agronomic efforts, we are also addressing challenges with our irrigation water and pond conditions Over the past year, the quality of the water in our system has become a growing concern Our intake pond, Pond 17, has accumulated significant sediment, which is being pulled into the irrigation system and causing blockages This places additional strain on our aging irrigation infrastructure, which dates back to 1987 We are actively exploring options with the ponds to improve performance
Another pressing issue is algae growth within our ponds, which has been more aggressive than usual this season We are pursuing multiple strategies to mitigate algae and improve water quality before it reaches the golf course Members may have noticed some algae accumulation in isolated areas on the greens, and this is a direct result of the water challenges we are working to correct
We remain committed to improving the health and playability of our golf course, and we thank you for your continued support and patience as these initiatives take effect
Thank you,
Cordially,
Josh Urbanec Golf Course Superintendent
