In this edition of the Voice you will read about some outstanding people who have walked through our hallways and made a memorable impact through their dedication as student-athletes, coaches and supporters of Catholic education. Our selected Hall of Fame and Heritage Award classes of 2014 embody the love, commitment and consistency that have been a hallmark of our schools. Please join me in celebrating and congratulating them on their special honor. We also want to thank all of you who have already given to the Annual Fund and ask others to please give. This is a key fundraiser for our schools and we rely on your support as we address funding our schools with less subsidy funds, a reasonable tuition and a smaller but stable enrollment. Our students are excelling in all areas and they continue to demonstrate that they make a difference in our community and those they enter after graduation. God bless you and your families and thank you for all you do for our Catholic school system. Tim Cullen

Corey Durbin Places Second at State! Capping off a stellar athletic career, senior Corey Durbin finished runner-up at the State wrestling tournament! Durbin also made the trip to Columbus last year, finishing fourth. On his path to the podium, he pinned the defending state champion at the 3:49 mark in the second period of the semi-final match. Unfortunately, he lost a close match in the finals. “Making it to the state finals was the most exciting event in my sports career. We all train so hard in wrestling; it was great to see it all pay off!” With a career record of 13041, Durbin certainly left his mark on the SJCC record books!

In Memoriam
In the past, we have printed the financials in the Fall or Winter editions of the Voice. This year, we experienced a transition in the business manager position right before Christmas break which contributed to the delay. We apologize for the delay and will make sure this is timelier in future years. As a consolidated school system, the BHCS Board and BHCS Finance Committee work with school administration to create and submit a balanced budget to the Diocese of Toledo. Throughout the school year, the Board and Finance Committee review monthly financial statements provided by the BHCS Business Manager. The result of the 2012-13 school year was a loss of $230,722. This followed two years of budget surplus. Projected enrollment for the 2012-13 school year was lower than expected and our Student Receipts were negatively impacted. As enrollment declines, the Parish Subsidy also declines as each Parish commits each year to a per pupil subsidy. Additionally, while the Board conservatively predicts Gifts, Donations, and Grants, BHCS was the benefactor of major gifts as can be seen in the 2011 and 2012 year end financials. Instructional expenses and building expenses both rose as a percentages year over year. In preparing for the 2013-14 school year, the administration made recommendations and the board approved cost saving reductions. Projected enrollment numbers for 2013-2014 were within 10 students. There are continuing efforts in place to retain and increase enrollment. Also, additional funds from income were released from the former St Joe Elementary School Endowment fund to support this year’s budget. The Board is in early budget planning stages for the 2014-2015 school year. At the October 2013 board meeting, the board received a presentation from Cropper GIS. This firm was used by the HFFT during the consolidation process and the board sought a professional recommendation regarding the capacity of our school buildings. Current classroom utilization is approximately 45.5% and recommended utilization is 85%. The board decided to table the discussion of building consolidation until later in the year and to not take action affecting the 2014-15 school year. The main drivers of this decision are to allow our efforts to increase enrollment a window to succeed, the concern that enrollment will decrease through an additional consolidation process, and the desire to fully engage the BHCS Stakeholders through the process that will take longer than a few months to plan. The board appreciates your continued prayers, donations of time and money, and your support of our mission “To reach and teach the Mind, Body, Heart and Soul of each child to bring them Closer to God.”

Boys Basketball The boys basketball season started somewhat rusty in the beginning, but thanks to some senior leaders they helped carry the team to a fun and positive season. Seniors Ryan Williams, Marcus Kerr, Hunter Harrison, Grant Mercer and Cody Snodgrass worked hard throughout the season and with their combined efforts placed 3rd in the MAL. Their record of 11-11 did not seem to show their true talent, as they lost several close games. Harrison and Ben Linke led the team in scoring throughout the season. sarah franks Girls Basketball With new coach Dennis Martin, the girls basketball team had a sharp eye on having a developing season to grow as players and as a team. Senior posts Emily Luc and Laura Baez brought experience to the squad and juniors Be Reardon and Ashley Burns provided a huge scoring threat. The team finished the season with a disappointing record but hope to be much better next year with more experience and more discipline on the team. Wrestling It was a record-making season for the wrestlers, sending half of the team to State! With a small team of only four, seniors Corey Durbin and Sean Vasquez both made the trip to Columbus. Durbin capped off an extremely successful wrestling career by competing for the state title and finished second, the highest finish for an SJCC wrestler in 31 years! Eric Fulwider and Bobby Mancha rounded out the squad. Swimming With the loss of several swimmers to graduation, the swim team knew they needed to add names to their roster. Newcomers Sophie Militello, Dillon Drown, David Gu, and Mathias Michelson helped put more relay teams in the water. Lone senior Sarah Franks anchored the girls team, specializing in the distance events. Alec Adams, the only Streak to make it to the District meet, specialized in the back stroke. The team worked hard throughout the season and will bring more experience back to the pool next season. Bowling Although the girls didn’t have a bowling team this year there were still plenty of boys in action. Coach Cheryl Hossler had veterans Jacob McQuistion, Ben Selvey, and Kyle Snograss to lead the boys’ team. Christian and Adam Smith both turned in high scores for the team and will return along with Jacob Weissinger, David Ingles, Jeramiah Gregory and Marco Zaragoza.
