By: Kelsey Nevius ‘14 “Your roots have given you everything you need, and your faith has given you everything else,” said superintendent, Mr. Tim Cullen, to the graduates of 2012. The 49 graduates also were reminded, “The world may not be ready for you, but you are ready for the world.” Head of the class, Valedictorian Victoria Smith and Salutatorian Haley Meek, also reflected on the class motto: “The world’s not ending, we’re just taking over.” The next five highest-ranking graduates were Kathryn Stierwalt, Aaron Staib, Abigail Swint, Rebecca Reinhart, and John Hoffman. The highest subject awards went to Maxwell Beck- Art, Zachary Molyet- Music, Victoria Smith- English, Spanish, Math, Social Studies, and Science, Jonathan Braun was given The Achievement Award. We had a great finish to the 2011-2012 school year!
Our recent Heritage and Hall of Fame inductees were the first to place their plaques and join previous inductees in our new “Walk of Fame” hallway at SJCC. (3rd Floor) New scoreboards were installed in our “Thunder Dome” thanks to the generous donations of some faith-filled sponsors. Our Super Seniors of SJCC 2012 had a great spring and beautiful graduation. Our awesome 8th graders experienced the sacrament of Confirmation and graduation from the St. Joseph Campus. Our 2nd grade students at our Sacred Heart Campus experienced the Holy Eucharist for the first time. Our Preschool classes at Sacred Heart said “goodbye” as they get ready to say “hello” to Kindergarten. Many students earned honor roll status at all 3 Campuses. Our SJCC spring athletes extended their seasons in Softball and Track; with several Lady Streaks earning a spot on the podium in Columbus. Our Art students received awards and recognition from the Fremont Fine Arts Society. Our students continued to provide hundreds of service hours to the Fremont community
We look forward to an even better year in 2012-2013! • • • • • • • • • •
Summer sports camps will be in full swing and Preschoolers through High Schoolers will be busy with cheerleading, basketball, football, volleyball, baseball, track and softball. New textbooks are coming, in several content areas, and all 3 Campuses will benefit. Our iPad initiative will continue in all 3 Campus locations. We will welcome Father Jacob Gordon as our new BHCS School Chaplain. Cleaning, painting, waxing and “de-cluttering” will brighten up each Campus. We will welcome exchange students from China at SJCC. The BHCS system will be completing a system-wide accreditation plan. All 3 Campuses will be on one, system-wide, calendar for the school year. Gifted students and students with disabilities will receive support services. Our graduation rate, scores on state tests and participation in academic competitions will continue to lead the way.

Summer 2012
We have much to be thankful for and many blessings to appreciate as we transition to next school year. Things slow down a little bit over the summer but the work never stops. If you would like to know more about where we are heading or would like to discuss ways you can join in and help “build the future”, please email me at tcullen@ bishop-hoffman.net. I would love to have a conversation with you. We have only just begun to tell our story. We have only just begun to put all the pieces in place. We have only just begun to move forward. We have come a long way in one short year and it is because of the staff, students, parents, parishioners and pastors who believe in a PreK- 12th Catholic school system. May God bless each and everyone one of you. Thanks. Streak of Genius Live Simply, Travel Lightly, Enjoy the Day By: Steve Pollick ‘66 In an ice storm, Steve Pollick ’66 married Peggy Hoff-
man ’66 in St. Joseph Church on April 7, 1972. It got better from there, and among other things, Pollick undertook a unique four-decade career as a globe-trotting writer. He retired Dec. 20 from The Blade in Toledo and offers these reflections: It was a wild ride, literally and figuratively, 40 years on The Blade’s staff, most of it as the outdoors editor. Mine was an adventure-filled posting that included setting foot in 35 countries and usually freezing or roasting depending on the latitude and climate. Looking back, it seems that I was wearing mythical seven league boots to cover so much ground. But pinch me, it really happened, though I wonder where the energy “Geared up” in artic parka and beaver hat came from. In a way, I owe for the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, it to two former SJHS seAlaska, 2000. nior teachers -- Walt Sneider in physics, who urged me to keep a career in science writing in mind because of the clarity of my essay-answers in tests, and Sister Mary Elisbeth, who nurtured my interest in creative writing. Along the way there were some dicey moments — trumpeting elephant charges while on foot in the Zimbabwean bush, a hair-raising attack by an enraged bull hippopotamus while canoeing the Zambezi River, flying in that little singleengine airplane across the North Atlantic and then the Sahara Desert while dodging a violent civil war in the Sudan, a couple of long slides down mountain sides, among others. Too, there was the food, or what passed for it in local culture: Fried mopane worms (Africa), live grubs (Australia), fresh-caught piranha (Amazon), raw ptarmigan gizzards (Arctic), and other stuff (China) best left undescribed. And I lived. I got a real kick out of helping elephant handlers wash their pachyderms on a blistering afternoon in a river in the tigerlands of north-central India. They rewarded my good sportsmanship by offering a solo ride, bareback, on one of their wrinkled gray behemoths, right down the river. (In bush shorts it is like riding on a pin cushion.) Being knighted into the Jaegermeisters’ Guild of the Czech Republic was an honor, and a little target practice with blowguns with the “boys” of the Yagua tribe deep in the Peruvian Amazon was a treat. Amid such larger-than-life adventures were many here in the United States and Canada. Like
the 130-mile canoe trips down the length of the Maumee River from Fort Wayne, Ind., to Toledo in 1984 and again just last summer. Seventy-two thousand paddle-strokes. Ibuprofen, anyone? Some of my most thoughtful writing began right behind our little red house overlooking Muskellunge Creek bottom, and alone in the solitude of an isolated winter wilderness cabin in Michigan’s rugged western upper peninsula. Along the way came two small volumes of nature-related essays, Reflections on a Summer Storm (1990), and Starwalking with Sarah (1994), and in 2011, Best of the Outdoors Page, lavishly illustrated and co-authored with friend and artist-colleague Jeff Basting. My long-suffering spouse, Peggy, always kept the home-fire burning, three kids fed, and finances managed in my sometimes lengthy absences beyond the blue horizon – all while encouraging and vicariously enjoying my travels. But we marked this point on our trail –retirement -- years ago. Now we have hiked to it. We are ready. Peggy leaves her nursing and health-care career on July 5. At age 64 we are still young enough and fit enough to do some physical things that may be out of our league later. Try as you might, you cannot beat gravity or entropy. Sons Andy and Aaron have a wilderness elk hunt on tap for me this fall, and daughter Sarah wants me to lace up for a half marathon. And there are seven grandchildren, including two sets of twins. Hmmm. But mostly now it is time to slow down, relax and reflect more, and do less. To concentrate on human being rather than human doing, the latter of which is a questionable cultural obsession. You can make more money but you cannot make more time. Each of us only has so many grains of sand in his or her life’s hourglass, and I intend to savor every grain that is left, be it 20 minutes or 20 years. Live simply, travel lightly, enjoy the day – that’s the motto. It is time to think deeply about the real stuff: Why are we here? What is this life really all about? Or why oh why do we continue to befoul the only nest in which we are sure that we can live in the entire cosmos, this lovely blue water planet, for nothing more than money or transient power? We seem to go out of our ways to avoid thinking about such things, perhaps because we are afraid that we just might learn the answers. Mine has been a dream ride through the best of country; it often was physically challenging, and always demanding on the writing side. But it was an opportunity beyond price and I am grateful for being able to share it with readers. But now it is time to saddle up a fresh horse and ride into some new country, retirement land.

Spring Sports Success!
Girls’ Track - Another outstanding girls’ track season delighted the fans. Sprinting her way to the State Meet, Kelsey Burkin finished 6th in the 100m dash and 5th in the 200m dash. Hurdler Katie Blohm qualified for State, and the throwing duo of Taylor Flick and Rebecca Reinhart both made it to the podium, finishing in 6th and 7th place! Maddi Filliator and Megan Mehalko, along with Burkin and Blohm, had an outstanding 4 x 100m relay team, making it all the way to Regionals and finishing well in every meet.
Senior, Zachary Molyet
Softball - Making another Regional appearance, the small
but talented girls’ softball players finished the season with a 16-13 record. Leading the team was freshman pitcher Be Reardon. A powerful hitting line-up consisted of seniors Katie Stroup and Emily Ronski, along with support from underclassmen Kristin Sessler, Ashley Burns, and Reardon. Stroup and Sessler received first team MAL honors and with the core of the team returning, the future looks great for next season. Baseball - After a slow start, the boys’ baseball team started running on all cylinders and finished with a solid record. The boys finished strong in league play, with a 6-5 mark. Pitchers Zack Yeckley and Tom Spader, handled most of the innings and offensively Yeckley, Spader, Marcus Kerr, Jake Yeckley and Matt Macielewicz all contributed. Seniors Tivo Ysasi, Austin Jess, and Spader provided great leadership and a spark when needed.
Senior, Tom Spader
Tennis - The boys’ tennis team struggled with youth and inexperience. Grant Cleveland led the team, playing first singles, but the majority of the Streaks were first year players. The boys only won a few matches but did gain valuable experience for next season. With all underclassmen on the team, next year looks promising. Boys’ Track - A talented group of underclassmen led the boys’ track team. The 4
x 200m relay consisting of Mitchell Gonya, Alex Veleba, Joey Fisher, and Matt Fox made it to the Regional competition. Fisher was also a stand out in the hurdles. Luke Stierwalt made great strides in the long jump and Gonya and Fox also turned in solid performances in the 100m and 200m dash throughout the season.

Summer 2012
Mike Naufel started his coaching career at SJCC in 1998 when he served as a junior high wrestling coach. A graduate of St. Mary Central Catholic in Sandusky, Naufel followed former Streaks Coach Chuck Lenhart to town. “When I was growing up, Coach Lenhart was the coach at St. Mary’s,” Naufel said. “He came to St. Joe and he and Mark LeJeune approached me with the idea of coaching. I started helping Mark out at the junior high and that’s how it all started.” Rarely having a full roster, he was just happy if he could fill out the lineup for most of his 12 seasons as wrestling coach. No matter the circumstance, though, one constant of Naufel’s was his ability to bring out the best in those grapplers he had at his disposal. “We’ve had a lot of kids that over achieved on what their athletic abilities normally would’ve allowed of them,” Naufel said. “They may have not made it to State, but they placed in our league tournament or ended the season with winning records.”
Since his hiring in 2000, SJCC sent 18 athletes to the State Tournament -- six of whom placed. Many others competed for league titles or tournament championships throughout the winter season. “I gave as much as I could to the program to advance it,” Naufel said. “It’s just time for someone younger to step in with a new approach and new ideas on where to take the program next.” Naufel was named Midland Athletic League Coach of the Year in 2003 after SJCC won the league crown. His 2004 team finished as league runner-up. “We are losing a good coach, but more importantly a good man,” SJCC athletic director Gary Geller said in the school’s statement. “Mike was very dedicated to the kids and Bishop Hoffman Catholic School. He was a great asset to our school as a coach and we know he will continue to be an asset in his retirement.” Naufel saw the program come a long way in just over a decade. “We did it a lot in the last 12 years,” he said. “We got the new wrestling building and we brought in all kinds of equipment for the wrestlers through donations. It all comes back to the Fremont community being extremely supportive.” What stands out to Naufel in his experiences? “Just the people I worked with and the kids,” he said. “The parents were always great and very supportive. Mike and wife Deidre have two children, Ryan ‘03 and Courtney ‘04. Naufel’s replacement, Pete LeJeune ‘97, was one of the 18 athletes he sent to the State Tournament. On May 5 and 6, the 2012 inductees in both the Alumni & Friends Heritage Award and the Athletic Hall of Fame were honored with being the first to hang their plaques in the new “WALK OF FAME” located on the 3rd floor of SJCC. The existing plaques were moved from outside the gymnasium and relocated at eye level outside the Media Center. This area can now serve as an inspiration to our students as they are continually reminded to reach for their dreams. Please join us Friday, October 5, as we welcome Tom Beier ‘63, former Miami Dolphin, during Homecoming 2012. The SJCC Alumni & Friends will host their annual gathering in the SJCC cafeteria immediately after the game.
