Mahalo and Aloha! Thank you, goodbye and hello. `“Thank you!” With deep appreciation for all of you who have contributed to the success of the BHCS system and supported our two campuses at Sacred Heart and SJCC, I say thank you! This edition of the Voice lists many people who have chosen to support our Catholic schools in some way with their donations of time, talent and money. As the superintendent and principal for the past six years, I say thank you for all of your prayers, ideas and support. “Goodbye!” When God calls you should answer the phone, hear His voice and trust what He tells you. This is advice I have shared for many years and sometimes even have followed myself. I have been called to serve another Catholic school system and leave BHCS/SJCC with lifetime memories and deep respect for all the staff, parents, community members and students who have made BHCS the absolute best place for a child to learn and grow in service, knowledge, extracurricular activities and faith – Heart, Mind, Body and Soul. Fremont will always be my home, SJCC will always be the place where my three daughters and I graduated from high school and BHCS will always be in my heart, thoughts and prayers. “Hello!” So now we say hello to the opportunity of “building the future” of BHCS. This school system is solid, focused, planned and purposeful in moving forward with reaching the goals outlined in the BHCS Strategic Plan. This plan requires the BHCS Board, BHCS staff, parents, students, community members and all alumni and friends to jump in and do the work required to secure and enhance an outstanding future for the new generation of students coming through the doors. BHCS is perched and ready to take flight to an even brighter future. Please continue to support this work and give all you have – the students need you to help build their future. Finally, on behalf of my wife Paula and daughters Sophia, Gabriella and Gianna, the Cullen family wishes you all the best life has to offer. Please keep us in your prayers as we will keep you in ours.

Summer 2017

Submitted by: Father Nathan Bockrath “I rejoiced when they said to me, ‘Let us go to the house of the Lord’” (Ps 122:1). This opening line of King David’s psalm captures the excitement of a pilgrim people as they journey to our Lord, for it is only the Lord who can bring wholeness to one’s life. In like manner, our BHCS community has great reason to rejoice because of the renovation of our High School Chapel. Two years ago, conversations were taking place about how we can bring repair and beauty to the space. In the Spring of 2016 plans were drawn and in the Summer of 2016 construction was underway. The first step was to remove the bathroom and closet in the space, which goes back to the days when it was used as a lounge for the Sisters. From here, a lot of cosmetic work was done: masonry repair and finishing on the walls, new lighting, new drop ceiling, a new platform for the sanctuary and new flooring. After the cosmetic work, we began to furnish. Pews replaced the metal chairs. The chapel Altar in memory of James Poorman, had an Altar Stone (which contains a Saint’s relic) placed in it, and was reinstalled. A new ambo, credence table and presider’s chair were also installed. Plus, the chapel now has a new tabernacle and stand prominently placed in the back of the sanctuary. Perhaps the most outstanding addition are the new stained glass windows of the four Evangelists. The Chapel is located on the third floor above the principal’s office, and the next time you are on campus, stop by for a visit. I would like to express sincere gratitude to Mike Wasserman for his help with the planning, organizing volunteers and work on the chapel, including demolition work, resizing and restoration of the pews, construction of the sanctuary platform, creation of the custom-made wood frames for the stained glass, installation, and more. I would also like to thank Liz Pietrykowski for her help with planning, Marcia Cleveland and Dan Knisely for their help with the drawings, Bill Hotz for his help on the state permits, Zach Wonderly for the drywall finishing, Tony Foos for masonry repair, Eric Black with the installation of the flooring, Mike Coleman for the duct work, Tom Babione for the ceiling, carpet removal, hanging of drywall and sanctuary step-up, Roger Dick for painting, Vic Frederick and Vince Snyder for their help on the pew restoration, Bob and Tad Foster for the restoration of the tabernacle, Jerry Eakin for his help with the roof, Nick Wasserman for the welding work on the door, to our window movers Ben Wasserman, Allison Wasserman, Jeff Wasserman, Dave Roth, Jared Weickert and for our pew movers Zach Militello, Ross Snyder, Jack Militello and Deacon Mel Shell. Plus, a special thanks for the donations in memory of Jim and Dorothy Quaintance.

Connie Coleman says Goodbye By: Madalyn Wammes ‘20 After touching the lives of the hundreds of students who walked the halls of SJCC, Connie Coleman retired at the end of the 2016-2017 school year. Students, co-workers, teachers and staff are all sad to see her go, after having spent so many years with her help always there. She began working in the St. Joe office in 1979, never dreaming that she would stay for 38 years. It was hard for her at first “It was a learning process, doing the job,” she stated. She explains how it took time to get used to everything - the many students, the start of a new job and fitting in with her fellow co-workers. Over the years, she had to adapt her role as her job duties slowly switched to a more technological face, and as new friends would come and go in the school. As the secretary, she saw many of the students passing by and asking for help in the office - which she was always happy to be there for them. “My favorite thing about the job are the students, and faculty and staff,” she says. “I’ll miss my co-workers the most.” Connie had a huge impact on the wrestling program throughout her time at SJCC. She served as the matmaid advisor as well as helping the many coaches over the years. She also helped organize many of the events that took place at the school, adding her creative touch to everything she was involved with. Her favorite memory of working at the school is getting to see her five children graduate from St. Joe. She looks forward to relaxing and resting, spending time with her husband and grandkids and scrapbooking. We wish her the best and thank Mrs.Coleman for all of the hard work she has put in to helping us at St. Joe. She will be truly missed!
