For Alumni, Friends and Families of Saint Joseph Central Catholic High School

2008 Alumni and Friends Heritage Award Recipients Each year SJCC honors several individuals with the SJCC Alumni and Friends Heritage Award. This award is given to candidates who have gone above and beyond, and who have touched our SJCC family in either its religious community or extra-curricular programs. All of the candidates have put their gifts into action and have spent countless hours on projects they are passionate about. They have demonstrated excellent leadership qualities and moral values. The ceremony will be held in the SJCC cafeteria on Saturday, April 19. The evening begins with cocktails at 5:15, dinner at 6:00, and the award ceremony follows dinner. Tickets are $20, for information contact SJCC at 419-332-5124 or aritzman@streaks.net. This year’s recipients are Janet (Borer) Winton, Marie (Wammes) Wagner and Hal and Diane Hawk.

Janet Borer Winton

Janet Borer Winton graduated from SJCC in 1956. She is a graduate of Notre Dame College and also earned her Master’s in Education from Pennsylvania State University and later became an instructor at each institution. She went on to become an associate professor at Case Western Reserve University while serving as the women’s athletics coordinator, women’s swim coach, and women’s tennis coach. She was chosen for this award because of her dedication to education and community service. She has served on numerous committees: The Notre Dame Alumnae Board, Catholic Elementary Schools Review Team, North

Central High Schools Evaluation, CWRU Hall of Fame, and the SJCC Scholarship Committee. She has been a Red Cross volunteer for over 25 years, St. Paschal Elementary teacher/volunteer for 10 years, and a volunteer for the St. Patrick Soup Kitchen. She donated her time to establishing the Hough Area Tutoring Alhambra Project, helped disabled children with Religious Education, and served as Director of the Plain Dealer Tennis Tournament as well as being codirector for 10 years for the NCAA InterCity Summer Youth Program. She resides in Rocky River with her husband James.

Marie (Wammes) Wagner

M a r i e ( Wa m m e s ) W a g n e r graduated from SJCC in 1948. She has been married to Gilbert for 60 years and is the proud mother of one son and five daughters. She was chosen due to her outstanding dedication to St. Joseph Parish. She has been the parish Sacristan since 1990. She became a Eucharistic minister in 1972 and delivers communion weekly to area nursing homes and to shutins. She is active in the Bereavement Committee, the leader of the special needs prayer group, the division leader for the Blessed Sacrament Confraternity, the leader of the Rosary Society, former member of the Marian Society and Daughters of Isabella, and the Cursillo prayer Group. She also has donated her time to the grade school library, the school cafeteria, the choir, and the parish council. Outside of the church, she was a 4-H advisor for 15 years, a Cub Scout

leader for three years, and volunteered at Memorial Hospital for over 30 years. She is a life-long resident of Fremont.

Hal and Diane Hawk

Hal and Diane Hawk have the distinction of being inducted as the first couple. Hal graduated from Fremont Ross in 1977 and is the owner of Crown Battery. Diane graduated from Port Clinton High School in 1982. Both are extremely active in the community and are wonderful supporters of SJCC. They established two SJCC Scholarships. The Hal & Diane Hawk Scholarship as well as the Crown Battery Scholarship. Together, they serve on the Fremont City Schools Levy Campaign and the Fremont Area Foundation. They have a passion for swimming, which is evident in their support of local swim teams. They spearheaded the Fremont Area Foundation Pool Project. They are active at Memorial Hospital, each has served on the capital campaign for the Weitzel-Kern Surgery Center. Hal is the Chairman of the Operating Board while Diane is a member of the Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. Hal is the president of the Battery Council International and a member of the Sandusky County Economic Development Corp. Diane is extremely involved at Lutz Elementary and the American Cancer Society and is the Co-President of the Port Clinton Community Band. They reside in Fremont with their two daughters, Megan and Morgan.
