Red Ribbon Week Monday, October 23rd will begin our county-wide Red Ribbon Week. Our school counselor, Ms. Tiffany Bilbrey will be sending home the daily events for that week soon.

Parent Signatures Throughout the school year, we often send papers home that require parent signatures. It is very helpful to teachers and the school office to be able to recognize these signatures. Using initials or curly “Q” signatures make` it difficult to figure out who the paper belongs to. We only ask for parent signatures when it is important, we appreciate it when we can recognize the signature. Thank you for your consideration in this matter.

Virtues in Practice As a school system, BHCS, with the recommendation from the BHCS Catholic Identity Committee has adopted the Virtues in Practice program for children in grades pre-kindergarten through eight to see our students grow in virtues and see the virtues as concrete expressions of their Catholic faith. It is set up in such a way that a whole school studies the same virtue each month, to provide a whole-school (and at home, whole-family) focus. The program covers 27 virtues over a three-year cycle. These three years emphasize and are named for the three theological virtues.  The YEAR OF FAITH focuses on Catholic devotions and the idea the “faith works” (Gal 5:6), by a school-wide emphasis on service projects. (Last year)  The YEAR OF HOPE emphasizes study skills, because in order to fulfill God’s plan for our lives we need to develop the talents He has given to us. (This year)  The YEAR OF CHARITY emphasizes community, particularly in regard to students’ interactions with one another, because “he who does not love the brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen” (1Jn 4:20). (Next year)

We will be working on the YEAR OF HOPE this year. Since parents are the primary educators of their children, Virtues in Practice respects their role by placing individualized conversations about a child’s character in the care of the parent. Home projects are not meant to dictate the role of a parent. Parents may choose to create their own project for any month, or may use the suggested list of projects provided as a resource. Virtues in Practice is most effective when parents model the virtue of the month, make references to it, or even choose to do one of the projects themselves. Our school will send home a form each month along with a list of projects. We will be tying our Christian Living Award to the Virtue of the Month. We are now in our second year. For the month of October the virtue is Studiousness. Attached to this newsletter is a home project for the month of October and the Home Project Sheet for the parent to sign and return at the end of the month. Good luck on this month of modeling for your child STUDIOUSNESS.

Taken From a Recent Newspaper Article Instill morals into today’s youth Recently, I was going through papers in my desk drawer when I came across this interesting “Drug Problem” commentary. I had a drug problem when I was young. I was drug to church on Sunday morning. I was drug to church for weddings and funerals. I was drug to family reunions, no matter the weather. I was drug to the bus stop to go to school. I was drug by my ears when I was disrespectful to adults and teachers. I was also drug to the wood shed when I disobeyed my parents. Those drugs are still in my veins and they affect by behavior in everything I do, say, and think. They are stronger than cocaine, crack or heroin, and if today’s children had this kind of drug problem, America might be a better place. Marie A. Terry Grand Rapids, Ohio
