Dear Alumni and Friends, According to Merriam Webster, the word commencement has two definitions: the time when something begins, and a ceremony in which degrees or diplomas are conferred. As I stood up on the stage during the senior awards ceremony and graduation and listened to the many accomplishments of the SJCC class of 2019, it dawned on me how interconnected the two definitions are. The graduates receiving their Bishop Hoffman Catholic School diplomas are now embarking on a new journey in their lives. They are off to new places, to take on new challenges and meet new people along the way. I am abundantly confident that each and every one of the students who received a diploma that day has the gifts and talents to go out and make a positive difference in the world. I know that they have the capability to act on those gifts and talents and share them with the world because of the foundation that they received from BHCS. The rigorous educational standards they were held to, the spiritual formation they invested themselves in, and the community of support behind them have all prepared them for anything they will face in their new journey.

Of course, they couldn’t have done it alone. A successful school like BHCS has many cogs all working together to form a well-oiled machine. There are many people who have helped them achieve their goals along the way, like their parents, the faculty and staff, administrators, priests, volunteers, coaches and everyone who supports BHCS through their generous donations and prayers. There are countless students who, without the financial aid they received to attend BHCS through our endowment funds and auction, wouldn’t have had the opportunity to be a part of such a special community. There are countless more students who wouldn’t be financially able to take the next step in their journey to attend college without earning one of the many scholarships that our students have the opportunity to receive because of our donors’ generosity and faith in the product that BHCS produces. The end of the school year also marks the commencement of a busy summer preparing for the beginning of a new school year. This summer we have several building projects that are already underway. New windows on the north side of the building, a new drop ceiling on the entire main floor, new LED lighting, a new roof and new HVAC unit with air conditioning in the auxiliary gym, new water lines and landscaping have all been made possible because of a bequest from the Ben Bartson estate that SJCC received in January of 2018. With half of the bequest invested, roughly $375,000, the board was primed to use the other half of the money this summer to make sure that the building and grounds of SJCC provided our students and families with a home for many more years to come. While we congratulate and say goodbye to one class, we prepare for a new school year with new families and new students. There is a lot of excitement for next school year with yet again another increase in student enrollment! Thank you and God bless, Anthony Fontana, Head of School

Class of 1954 Scholarship

The class of 1954 has created a scholarship for incoming freshmen. This fund will award a minimum of two $500 scholarships to chosen students who demonstrate the heart of SJCC-they have a love for SJCC and truly are looking forward to being a “Streak”. These awards are not financially based. They are awarded for the whole person concept. We are extremely grateful for the support the Class of 1954 is providing for future generations of SJCC graduates.

The family has created a fund to benefit Bishop Hoffman Catholic School Faculty and Staff. The goal of the Wendt family fund is to assist us in retaining the best teachers to educate our young minds.

New Band Uniforms

The SJCC Marching Band will be donning new uniforms this fall thanks to the generosity of the Knight Baldwin Charitable Fund Inc. Along with the Knight family, the SJCC Athletic Booster Club also dedicated funds to complete their fundraising goal of $19,000. We can’t wait to see them on the football field this fall!

Bill Cronin puts his scissors away! Reprinted from: The Fremont News-Messnger, written by Daniel Carson

There probably aren’t too many hair styles Bill Cronin ‘44 hasn’t seen since he started trimming bangs and taking a little off the top in 1956. When Cronin came into the business, the flat top may have been the most popular men’s hairstyle in the United States. But Cronin said the seemingly simple flat top could be difficult for a barber. Sometimes with a flat top, a person’s hair won’t stand up, he said.”Some of those were actually pretty hard to cut,” Cronin acknowledged, as he sat in a chair at his barbershop Thursday morning. Cronin, 92, who owns Bill’s Barber Shop in Fremont, retired Dec. 21 after 62 years as a barber.”I’ve made a lot of new friends doing this, a lot of lasting friends. But it’s been a lot of long hours,” he said. Hair styles supposedly change every seven years, Cronin said.He’s given thousands of haircuts over the years as the styles favored longer hair in the late 1960s, then sideburns, with mullets still on the horizon. Before he took the plunge and attended Toledo Barber College, Cronin did factory work.He worked 13 years at the former Standard Products factory in Port Clinton. “They all told me, ‘You’ll be back. You’re one of us.’ I told them, ‘I’ll never be back’” Cronin said. His father and Cronin’s late wife, Gretchen, persuaded him to pursue a career as a barber. Cronin grew up in Fremont and has three daughters: Peg, Pat and Pam. He was married 59 years to Gretchen before she died in 2013. He’s cut hair at three different locations on West State Street, with Cronin estimating he’s been at his current shop at 507 W. State Street for at least 30 years. For about seven years, Cronin also worked a second job at Kroger as a night stocker while he barbered during the day. At that time, Kroger had a store (where the Fremont City Schools administrative building currently sits) across the street from Cronin’s barbershop.After working his day job, Cronin would stock shelves three nights a week from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m..He’d sleep a few hours and then come into his barbershop at 8 a.m. His work space is relatively sparse, with a few tools of the trade located in drawers behind a pair of electric barber chairs that have been broken longer than Cronin can remember. A map of Ireland, given to Cronin by one of his daughters, is posted on the wall next to a giant, potted plant.

Noah Price ‘19 Wrestling State Champion Noah Price ‘19 has accomplished his wrestling goal-become a State Champion! On March 9, he joined Mark Coleman as our 2nd State Champion in wrestling. “I take a lot of pride out of getting this opportunity from St. Joe,” he said. “Total in our school, we have 140 kids. When anyone from a school this size does something like this, it’s an amazing feeling and it brings the town together. To think everyone in town knows what I’m doing and is proud of it, I can’t imagine a better feeling.” Price started early with the sport in Fremont. “I’ve wrestled for St. Joe since kindergarten,” Price said. After moving up a weight class as a senior, he was 49-0, including 39 pins, and also was the Sandusky Bay Conference Champion. He was third at State as a junior and didn’t place as a sophomore. He was a two-time District Champ and three-time state qualifier. He will continue his wrestling career at Ohio University. “The fact I get to represent a new team and coaching staff and a whole new school is exciting. Less than 1% of high school wrestlers continue Division I. “It’s exciting to think I’ve made it this far.”

The Class of 2019 celebrated their graduation May 26, 2019 as the 122nd graduating class. Austin Michael was the class valedictorian and Kimberly Burns earned the salutatorian honor. The next highest ranking seniors were Emily Militello, Sarah Molyet, Branden Kadlubowski, Gloria Reinhart and Madeline Molyet. The Bishop’s Cross, considered the highest ranking award, is given to one male and one female who over their high school career have exhibited the virtues fostered by this Catholic institution. This year’s recipients were Dalton Ewing and Sarah Molyet. Special awards were given to the following students: Ethel Smith Outstanding Female Athlete Award – Natalie Cook, Robert Smith Outstanding Male Athlete Award – Noah Price, Alumni & Friends Award – Sophia Mancha, Thomas H. Rimelspach Memorial Award – Austin Michael, Honor Award for Outstanding Loyalty and Service – Erin Borer, Sara Barbour Memorial Award for Courage – Sabrina Wooten & Derek Kelbley, Excellence in Religion Award – Gloria Reinhart & Alexander Eberly.
