When I was a little boy, I heard that God existed because my parents at home and the priests at church told me so. When I was a student in our Catholic schools, I learned that God existed because I had instruction about our faith and beliefs and saw examples of His love through the teachers, sacraments, weekly Mass, and retreats. When I was a college student, I was challenged about God’s existence by other students with other beliefs, opportunities to turn away from Him, and my own inconsistent attendance at Mass. When I got married and started a family, I was renewed by God’s existence through the love of my wife, the birth of our daughters, the loss of my parents and a sister, and this journey we call life. When I started working for the BHCS staff, students, and families, I was inspired by God’s existence. The daily miracles I get to see through the eyes of our K-12 students, the dedicated staff, and the countless supporters of our faith and schools is truly special. We provide our precious students with the opportunity to grow in their faith, love, and knowledge of God and prepare for a world that will tell them there is no God. God exists and lives through each one of us. We need your generous prayers, donations, and time to make this happen. Thank you and may God bless you each and every day on your journey of faith, too. Tim Cullen
On the Cover: SJCC is extremely proud of our Naderer Sports Complex! Thanks to the generosity of Pete ‘52 and Marcie Naderer, student athletes can be found perfecting their skills on the football, baseball, and softball fields throughout their respective seasons! During football season, teams as young as fourth grade through varsity level can be found tackling, passing, and kicking throughout the night. Flowers throughout the complex are blooming all through the growing season and highlight the pride of SJCC. Pete and Marcie are shown on Grandparents Day at the St. Joseph Campus with their grandaughter Melissa Gillmor (fourth grade teacher) and grandchildren Brandon Kadlubowki, Megan Kadlubowski, and Drew Frederick.

From Cuba to Ohio
~ Robert Venezuela, Class of ‘65
I was born in Havana Cuba in 1946 to caring parents and a bothersome older brother. We lived in a beach town called Cojimar which is located about 10 miles from the Capital. There I resided until 1959, a date that changed Cuba forever. January 1959 marks the year Fidel Castro and his Communist rebels descended from the hills and put an end to a way of life. My father never saw this debacle as he passed away in the summer of 1958. My mother found herself widowed with two sons of military age being harassed by neighbors and other family members to enroll them into special academies that were being formed to indoctrinate young men and women into the Communist party. We had some relatives in the United States that were able to file visa waivers and we were able to leave the island without our families. The trip was traumatic as I was placed inside a glass enclosure in the airport and was forced to watch my mother hold back tears during the whole ordeal. We spent almost ten hours in the enclosure. We called it the Fish Bowl. I joined my mom again in 1969 after my Army discharge. My brother came first in 1961 and I followed in 1962. He was 19 and was not able to enter school under the Catholic welfare protection, but I was lucky and was accepted. He was able to join me in Ohio later in 1963. The first three months of 1962 were spent in a Sheriff’s boys camp called Matacumbe which today stands next to the Tamiami Airport in South Miami. Then I was transferred to Ohio and placed in foster care in Clyde, Ohio, in the home of a wonderful family, Dawn and Patrick Linehan. John, their youngest, is a St. Joe’s alum. The year was 1962, one of the worst winters in Ohio’s history. They enrolled me in St. Joe, and here I began to really appreciate my good fortune. I graduated from St. Joe in 1965 thanks to wonderful teachers, administrators, and peers that always treated me with kindness. Now that I am older, I really appreciate what the Linehan’s, the Catholic Welfare, and everyone that I met while at St. Joe did for me.

Once again, the BHCS Early Childhood Center has been blessed to have “angels” to help refresh our building for a new school year. The generosity of Christopher and Mary Knight and Andy and Emily Peterson made it possible to purchase new paint. Vince Snyder, Dave Bain, Bill Barbour, Tom Light, and Jack Mayle contributed their time and talent with the painting. Staff members Dorie Partyka and Charla Spotts added their creative final touches to welcome BHCS youngest students. A special thanks to Vince Snyder for returning to paint the shed and a climber in our playground area. The “angels” that flew in have been helping the preschool program for many years. We thank you for being part of the journey...and to many more wonderful memories. You have made an investment in the bright future of Bishop Hoffman Catholic School. New View
With Deep Appreciation
The front of St. Joseph Central Catholic High School now is complete! In late spring, the bottom row of windows were replaced giving a whole new look from the inside out! Some landscaping has been removed to highlight the new view! In addition, the band room was repainted and carpeted allowing for better acoustics. Thanks to the many donors who helped complete this project!
I am a better speaker than a writer, but I will do my best. As I got older, there were frequent times that thoughts about my years as an educator and historian came to mind. The basic thought was “Have I made a difference?” Your many letters, cards, and comments have answered that question, and I thank all of you for helping me through this difficult retirement transition. There is an old ancient Irish saying and I hope it expresses my feelings towards all of you. “May the wind be at your back, your roads all downhill and may God always be at your side.” Got Mit Uns William A.
