Five athletes advanced to the State Track Meet in Columbus! Ava Stepanic competed in the long jump after setting the school record with a jump of 16’-10.5� earlier in the season. The girls 4x400m relay team, Brooke Foster, Chloe Liebold, Jessica Drown, and Miranda Wammes finished fifth in the State with a school recordbreaking time of 4:01.78! 1
We have concluded the 2015-2016 year for the Bishop Hoffman Catholic School system and, like many of you, move into the summertime transition of reunions, vacations, and other events where we spend time with family and friends. We also use this time to clean and upgrade our buildings and plan for the implementation of our religious and academic curriculum for the 2016-2017 school year. Even though the students are done for the year our work continues. This edition of the Voice is full of information recognizing so many of you that continue to give so much to support our school system. At both the Sacred Heart Campus and the SJCC Campus, we see the impact of this and the continuation of the most outstanding educational environment around. Our world continues to seem out of control but we continue to reach and teach the mind, body, heart, and soul of each child to bring them closer to God. This is our mission and our purpose. Six years ago, when we consolidated the Catholic schools in Fremont, we faced many challenges. Since then we have utilized proactive planning, innovation, collaborative leadership, and the power of prayer to build and establish an even stronger option for parents that want the best for their children and their future. For example, our recent Class of 2016 continued the trend of excellence seen by graduates of SJCC. On average, they were offered over $51,600 in scholarships from various local, county, state, and university sources. We may be small but we are mighty, our students are well rounded, and they are ready to impact the world when they leave. Looking back 35 years to the Class of 1981, I reflect on life’s changes for me and my fellow classmates over the years. We have “blazed our own trail”, added members to our families, said goodbye to loved ones, and have made many choices along the way. Just like the Class of 2016, and every other group that has walked these halls, we are forever connected to each other, to our school and to our faith. Tim Cullen BHCS Superintendent/SJCC Principal

1960’s Nancy and Dave Francis ‘60 celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary January 8, 2016 while vacationing in Florida. A family celebration followed after their return home. Margaret (Dickman) ‘62 and Tom Gonya ‘61 celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary May 21, 2016. Arlene (Burkett) ‘67 and Charles Lenhart ‘64 will celebrate their 45th wedding anniversary in August 2016. Susie and Joe Camp ‘69 celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary September 6, 2015. Susie & Joe Camp They will celebrate with a trip to Australia and New Zealand later in the year. 1980’s Dan Leite ‘82, a recipient of a new heart, completed a half marathon May 1st and has returned to his work at the Statehouse. His transplant began on Christmas Eve with his new heart taking its first beat at 12:07 AM Christmas Day. What a special Christmas present! The surgery was performed at Ohio State University’s Ross Heart Hospital. He was off of all steroids and most of the medication following the transplant in midApril. This spring he has given many speeches urging people to become organ donors. As of now he has not met the family of his heart donor. Dan says “I sure appreciated all the prayers, cards and kind wishes from my classmates at SJCC.” Mike Gonya ‘87 was presented the Farmer of the Year Award by the Sandusky County Chamber of Commerce at the Ag Week Breakfast on March 11, 2016. 1990’s Amy and Kevin Good ‘97 welcomed daughter Hannah Rosalyn Good June 2, 2015. Andrew Pumphrey ‘02 teaches at St. Andrew’s in Upper Arlington. He received the Golden Apple Award from Upper Arlington Civic Association on April 19, 2016. MaryAnne Pickett ‘02, D.O.,USN, graudated from Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences in May 2015. She is currently in surgical residency at Walter Reed National Medical Center. Imagine traveling through the Amazon rainforest with a group of people you’ve just met. Some of the group’s members are medical students, while others are prominent healthcare professionals from your hometown and surrounding communities. Each of you has a different specialty, but you all have come here with the same purpose: to bring free healthcare to those who may not otherwise receive it. This is the sort of group that Dr. Iracema Arevalo began three years ago to help combat the health crisis in her hometown of Iquitos, a river community located in tropical Peru, in the northern section of the Amazon jungle. Despite its tropical charm, Iquitos is currently in both social and economic turmoil. The area is plagued by disease, a thriving drug trade, extreme poverty, and a lack of proper education and healthcare for its residents. Because they do not have access to clean water or proper medical resources, many of the poor in Iquitos are extremely susceptible to devastating jungle illnesses, like dengue fever and malaria. To help improve the health of residents in her hometown, Dr. Arevalo put together a medical mission team that travels every year to Iquitos to serve those in need. During their mission trip, this team offers free medical services in multiple areas, such as cardiology and pediatric care. The group also offers training to local physicians and teaches proper hygienic procedures to the residents of Iquitos. Dr. Arevalo herself serves as both medical director of the team and the pediatric infectious disease specialist, and she actively recruits other medical personnel and students throughout the year to accompany her on her annual journey. Some of these Maggie Hir t recruits have previously included former St. Joseph student Brennan Reardon (Class of 2013) and recent graduate Maggie Hirt (Class of 2016). Dr. Arevalo considers the students to be a valuable asset to the medical mission, as they are the future of the medical field. Overall, Dr. Arevalo’s mission trips have taught her to never take anything for granted-- a lesson she hopes to impart to her daughter Andrea, who tags along every year to observe and take part in the lifesaving work that the medical mission team performs. Through this mission, Dr. Arevalo wishes to relay the same message to her team members as she does to Andrea: that nothing in life is guaranteed, and that helping others is always worth the effort. Ultimately, Dr. Arevalo’s dream is to begin a pilot medical center in Iquitos that will operate year-round so the residents will always have access to medical care. SJCC Booster Club
308 Jackson Street, Fremont, OH 43420 Each year the SJCC Booster Club has asked for your monetary support as we raise funds to support athletic activities at SJCC. So how much do we raise, you ask? Over the last 11 years, the Boosters have donated over $500,000 to the school or in the name of the school. Included in this is the yearly unrestricted $20,000 gift to SJCC to offset expenses of the athletic teams. In addition the Boosters just finished their ten year commitment to donate $100,000 to the Fremont Foundation for the Harmon Field at Don Paul Stadium. This, along with the various requests for new uniforms and equipment, has kept our fund raising team very busy. How do we raise these funds? We use fundraisers, donations from the community and service organizations, as well as your annual membership dues. Again this year we are asking for your help using any or many of the events mentioned here. Listed below are ways you can participate and help us support the SJCC athletic programs. Pledges: Donors may make pledge commitments payable over several years. Securities: When making gifts of appreciated securities you avoid capital gains tax on the appreciated portion. Planned Gifts: Planned gifts allow donors to make a significant gift to benefit BHCS in the future, typically at the donor’s or beneficiary’s death. The Catholic Education Development Fund The Catholic Education Development Fund (CEDF) is a nonprofit endowment supporting quality Catholic education. The CEDF’s independent Board of Trustees carefully invest the funds it raises. These funds are managed in accordance with the fund’s Articles of Association. Funds are raised through donations, the CEDF/SJCC Alumni & Friends Golf Outing and the CEDF Reverse Raffle. CEDF is proud to provide $48,684 for the 2015 gift! Class of 2016
As the end of the school year approached, it was time for the Class of 2016 to say their last good-byes to SJCC. On May 29th, the seniors, along with their friends and families, gathered together to celebrate graduation. It was a miserably hot day, but that didn’t make this day any less special for the seniors. The event took place first in St. Joseph Church with a baccalaureate Mass. Following Mass was the commencement ceremony in the gym. Mike Kuss was named class valedictorian and Nick Magro was named salutatorian. Everyone in attendance enjoyed a few words from Kuss and Magro about their time at SJCC. In addition, Mr. Cullen expressed his pride for the Class of 2016, all they had accomplished here, and how great they will do in future. Brooke Foster and Kuss earned the Bishop’s Cross, the most highly regarded award. Although their time at SJCC had come to a close, there was no doubt that the class of 2016 had a huge impact on the school and will forever be remembered.
