ONE FILMS CAN'T DO THE SAME AGAIN AND AGAIN

Kareena Kapoor Khan

Kareena Kapoor makes her OTT debut on Netflix with Jaane Jaan, where she takes on the role of Maya D'Souza, bringing to life Keigo Hagashino's bestselling novel, ‘The Devotion Suspect X.’ Lipika Varma in an exclusive with the actress...

Excerpts-

How was your shooting experience, as the film was shot in Kalimpong and Darjeeling?

The weather was so cold in Darjeeling and Kalimpong, and the shooting was a different experience. Sujay chose to shoot at this location, as the mood was right for the story, which is very important when shooting a thriller.

You probably had many offers from OTT platforms; what made you choose this film to debut in the OTT space?

Yes, I did get offers, but I didn’t like any script until now, as I didn’t feel it was worth starting on OTT. Everyone is doing such good work on OTT platforms. Sujoy wanted to make this film for Netflix. When I read this script, I loved it. I have always wanted to do a thriller or something different, and this was the perfect opportunity.

What is the big deal of working on OTT?

It’s a different kind of performance where you need to be more prepared. We, as actors, know that performance has to be good, as it is watched more closely. It's more important than anything else. I want people to watch my work and appreciate it.

'' Everyone is doing such good work on OTT platforms. Sujoy wanted to make this film for Netflix. When I read this script, I loved it. I have always wanted to do a thriller or something different, and this was the perfect opportunity.

INDIA 9 October 2023

What was the most challenging and toughest thing for you to do in this film?

There is nothing really tough about work. I didn’t find anything difficult as I wanted to do it. It was a joy being part of this experience, so you want to do it rather than think of it as a challenge.

How do you rate Sujoy Ghosh among all the other directors you have worked with?

I think he is very good at his job. He always pushes his artists to do something different. He emotionally drains them and brings out that side of them, which is slightly more intense. He makes such stories which require a perfect performance from his actors. This film is a story of a mother and a child, which has been shown darkly and wonderfully.

'' One can't do the same films again and again. I will still keep doing commercial films. But a side of me wants me to do different kinds of films apart from the same stuff.

Has the criteria for choosing films changed over the years?

One can't do the same films again and again. I will still keep doing commercial films. But a part of me wants to make various kinds of films, something different from the ones I've already done.

What is your take on changing challenges into opportunities?

One needs to explore different things. Choose different scripts, and scripts are content-oriented now. It’s all about choices rather than just being part of a successful film. We have to make the right choices. You are proving yourself constantly. Everyone wants to be known through their work.

Lastly, Jaane Jaan is premiering on your birthday; what are birthday celebrations to you now?

Birthdays are more family now rather than parties. It is more about being around with family and my kids.

“What else will you do if not this?” a cousin asked entrepreneur Venu Rachakonda, MD of Sri Krishna Silks in Hyderabad, when he contemplated closing an outlet of his store. Indeed, entrepreneurship runs in his blood, the 37-year-old who started a business barely out of his teens.

In 2008, Venu started the first store of Sri Krishna Silks in the traditional business hub of Hyderabad, General Bazaar.

From Ikat to Banaras, Patan Patola to Kanchivaram, Balucharis to Pochampally - the range of silks available at the store remains staggering and sourced from the length and breadth of the country. This range remains their USP and the reason customers, old and new, flock to their premises.

A LEARNING CURVE

It was in 2008 that Venu launched the business, and it took another five

HYDERABAD SILK ENTREPRENEUR'S RISE: From Weaving Dreams to Weaving Success!

Meet Venu Rachakonda, MD of Sri Krishna Silks in Hyderabad, a true entrepreneur who turned a potential closure into a flourishing business. With a passion deeply rooted in his family's entrepreneurial legacy, he, along with his cousins Gautam, Murali, and Gopi Manepally, founded Sri Krishna Silks in 2008. Today, this brand boasts six thriving stores across Hyderabad, employing over 125 individuals and collaborating with countless weavers nationwide. From Ikat to Banarasi, their journey is a testament to their dedication and love for traditional craftsmanship.

years for him to start their second outlet in the city. “We made a lot of mistakes initially but soon learned from them. From stock management to empowering our store managers and using technology, we learned these skills on the go. They helped us in being recognized as a pioneering brand,” he shares.

In a sea of saree stores in Hyderabad, their attention to detail made Sri Krishna Silks a brand to watch out for. Venu works with the weavers from ideation to technical information and shares inputs for designs and colour combinations while understanding the market as a whole.

The young entrepreneur smiles, “We look at both micro and macro scenarios. We take cues from what is working at a national level and the latest trends and incorporate them. However, our success stems from being affordable and delivering quality without costing a leg and an arm.”

"
WE LOOK AT BOTH MICRO AND MACRO SCENARIOS. WE TAKE CUES FROM WHAT IS WORKING AT A NATIONAL LEVEL AND THE LATEST TRENDS AND INCORPORATE THEM. HOWEVER, OUR SUCCESS STEMS FROM BEING AFFORDABLE AND DELIVERING QUALITY WITHOUT COSTING A LEG AND AN ARM.

Venu faces many challenges in his work and works at solving them assiduously. “Working with the weavers can be challenging as they prefer traditional modes of design and workflow. But then, once you communicate with them clearly, the results begin to show.”

Covid was a challenge that enabled Venu to pivot. He recalls, “Of course, it was challenging, and we were shut down for the initial months, and restrictions on gatherings made shopping a non-essential chore. People were slow to get back to public spaces, too.”

During the trying times, the store started building up its social media presence (today, they have over one lakh followers) and started reaching out to clients in the US via WhatsApp appointments. “We are a one-stop solution to our NRI clients. From customizing saris, blouses, and lehengas to making bespoke ethnic wear for men, we provide all wedding/ celebratory services,” he shares.

We are a one-stop solution to our NRI clients. From customizing saris, blouses, and lehengas to making bespoke ethnic wear for men, we provide all wedding/ celebratory services.

TOP OF THE GAME

Today, their brand stays ahead of the competition with its innovation and inventiveness. “Theme dressing is big in weddings these days. Be it colourthemed or themed around textiles, like Patola for the mehendi ceremony for the entire family or Ikat for the Sangeet, we started customizing these options much before others,” Venu explains.

Another aspect that helped them was the onus on quality. Even in their earliest days, when stores balked to stock saris over Rs 15,000, they stocked premium saris over a lakh. Today, as their website is taking shape, they are reaching across the globe thanks to the Indian diaspora.

Will Indians continue to favor the sarees? “Yes, without a doubt,” the entrepreneur asserts and adds, “While saris might not be used for daily wear, they will never go out of style for festive/wedding wear. No other garment matches the opulence.”

INDIA 13 October 2023
"

With his wife Parinika in charge of customization (of bespoke wear for men and women) and Venu in charge of translating the most challenging ideas of a client to reality (“thoughts to motifs,” he says), the store is going from strength to strength. Today, they even customize a single sari (for example, a single garment with animal motifs for a birthday party) at a reasonable cost or even a loved one’s face on a sari pallu

Ask about their plans, and Venu rattles off, “We want to open branches across many cities of South India soon and to extend our customized services further.” Along with his one-month-old son Viraj Krishna, the entrepreneur likes to travel (the family’s recent trips were to Jaipur and Bali) and is looking forward to expanding his store’s footprints.

Short Takes

• A weave that always shines: Kanjeevarams

• Life goals: To live contently and grow as a brand.

• In five years: To extend our online presence and reach more customers.

Inchpaper:Empowering Students, Empowering India

Pulak Agarwal, the founder of Inchpaper, a company that runs the NGO ‘Har Ghar Kitab’ is a seasoned professional with 18 years of experience in the field of education. The ‘Har Ghar Kitab’ initiative aims to provide underprivileged children with stationery materials without causing harm to the environment. In conversation with Surabhi Goel, Pulak talks about his passion for education, the journey of the NGO and more.

With a passion for transforming education, Pulak left the corporate world in 2018 to establish a management consulting firm in Gurgaon. The firm offers services to schools and aspiring school owners, contributing to the advancement of education. Under Pulak Agarwal's leadership, Inchpaper has achieved significant milestones, including the establishment of 118 schools and 215 vocational skill centres across India. This remarkable progress has garnered attention, making Inchpaper a company that is making waves in the education sector.

By collecting and recycling old textbooks, notebooks, and storybooks, Inchpaper is making a significant impact on the education landscape of India. Their campaign has garnered widespread recognition, including a special commendation from the Government of India, the Ministry of Environment, and the Ministry of Forest and Climate Change.

The Genesis of Har Ghar Kitab

:

Inchpaper's journey into social initiatives began in February 2023 when they noticed a pressing need for stationery and books among disadvantaged children, particularly during the challenging times brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic. The objective was to support NGOs working tirelessly to educate underprivileged children. What started as a localized effort in Gurgaon quickly gained momentum, with inquiries pouring in from cities across India, such as Mumbai, Goa, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Jaipur, Chandigarh, and Ludhiana.

INDIA 16 October 2023

Collection and Distribution Challenges:

Expanding the campaign nationwide within a short period presented numerous challenges. The team had to strategize the collection process and address supply chain obstacles in different cities. Despite these hurdles, the response from parents, corporate offices, and communities was overwhelming. As awareness spread, NGOs expressed interest in collaborating with Inchpaper, requesting donations of notebooks and books for the underprivileged children they served.

Distribution Efforts:

Inchpaper has proactively produced recycled notebooks, which are expected to be distributed to various NGOs by the first week of July. Additionally, textbooks have been distributed to multiple NGOs in Delhi NCR and Mumbai. The campaign has also yielded over 3,000 storybooks, which will be utilized to establish libraries or reading clubs in Delhi NCR, Mumbai, and Bangalore. NGOs provide their specific requirements based on the age group and medium of instruction, and Inchpaper creates customized bundles for each organization, delivering them through courier or transport services.

Collaborations and Recognition:

Inchpaper's Har Ghar Kitab campaign has received three types of collaborations. Firstly, the Government of India, particularly the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, has recognized and appreciated Inchpaper's efforts to reduce paper wastage and recycle for a more significant cause. This recognition is evident through the ministry's certification and endorsement of the campaign. Secondly, corporates and NGOs actively collaborate with Inchpaper as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives. Lastly, students and teachers from various cities, including Bangalore, Mumbai, Delhi, and Gurgaon, have volunteered to support the campaign, lending their enthusiasm and commitment to its success.

Future Prospects:

The collaboration with corporates and schools involves continuous support through book and paper donations, allowing the campaign to extend its reach year after year. The long-term goal is to create an enduring and influential drive that propels the initiative forward, benefiting many schools and organizations.

To participate in the campaign, contribute your old books, textbooks, and workbooks by sending them to the social handles listed below.

Sonam Kapoor on pergnancy, wellness

and parenting

Sonam Kapoor unveiled a pregnancy detection tool, emphasising the importance of reliable pregnancy detection. In an exclusive with Lipika Varma she talks about pregnancy motherhood, diet and more…

Excerpts-

What questions did you have in mind before bringing this precious human life into this world, and how did you address them?

When my husband and I got married, we wanted to enjoy our marriage for two years and have a good time before we decided to have a child. I remember it was January 2020, when we were trying to have a child, when the pandemic happened. We got scared and just decided to wait till the pandemic was over. Though things started settling down, the second wave occurred in India; it was pretty scary, so we decided to wait a little. I was reading about fertility and the lifestyle I needed to lead during this time. More than anything, I understood that I must lead a stress-free life, from taking supplements to eating right and sleeping at the right time. I’m thrilled Prega News is taking a full approach to pregnancy.

Do you think the ovulation tracking date is essential?

Yes, it’s essential because, contrary to what we are told, you can’t get pregnant every day. Everyone has a different cycle, different ovulation days, and days when you are more fertile. I have a 32-day cycle. Those five days before and after ovulation are the most important and fertile. These are the five days you are most likely to be pregnant. An ovulation tracker can prove to be your best friend at this time. So, I did use an ovulation tracker to get pregnant.

How did tracking your ovulation feel?

It was stress-free because you are not guessing when you are supposed to have sex. It is supposed to take off romance for some time. But you get back when you love your partner.

MOTHERHOOD IS A BEAUTIFUL JOURNEY, AND IT STARTS WITH THE JOY OF KNOWING YOU ARE PREGNANT. I UNDERSTAND HOW CRUCIAL IT IS TO HAVE A RELIABLE AND ACCURATE PREGNANCY DETECTION TOOL IN THE MIDDLE OF ANTICIPATION AND EXCITEMENT OF PREGNANCY.

INDIA 29 October 2023
"

What other supplements did you include in your diet plan besides eating healthy and leading a healthy lifestyle?

I honestly took advice from a Tamilian doctor in the UK. She told me to eat the Indian way. She advised me to eat an antiinflammatory diet, which is Indian Khaana like Roti, bhaji, Dal, and dahi, along with chicken and fish, for nonveg options. I followed a simple diet with a few supplements. Just be simple, and don’t go on a crazy diet. Although I put a lot of weight during my pregnancy, I wasn’t eating goond ke ladoos and sugar.

You put on a lot of weight; did you feel uncomfortable? How was your experience constantly not seeing yourself in your older avatar?

I gained 36 kgs and was in Kaftans all the time. I wasn't looking at losing weight after I delivered. My main focus after his birth was to take care of my child. I took an entire year to lose weight slowly and steadily. I didn't go on a crash diet. It didn’t matter if I was photographed; I didn't shy away from my weight. You have to love yourself and be healthy, both mentally and physically.

One thing that you were worried about while you were pregnant?

I got pregnant at an advanced age- 36. A few of my friends got pregnant at the same period, and they told me everything that needed to be monitored, like the foetus’s health, etc. I had a little anxiety, but it was always higher when I went for check-ups, as I would want my child to grow well. I think, as a firsttime mom, you are always nervous. I would google to find out how much weight I am supposed to put on.

How did you feel when you discovered you were pregnant?

It was on Christmas, the 25th of December, when I learned I had conceived. The weird thing was that my hubby had COVID at that time, and we were sleeping in the same apartment in separate rooms. So I told him through Facetime, and he felt great.

What must you do while pregnant to keep yourself and the baby healthy?

I exercised during my pregnancy. I did Pilates and a lot of walking. You should take your doctor’s advice for sure. Be careful of yoga unless you practice with an affluent yoga teacher. Just be active.

One best decision you took while you were pregnant?

I followed the old tradition. I was at my parent's house for my first six months; the last two months, it was one of the best decisions. The comfort you feel at home with your mother is my best.

What parenting advice do you want to give?

When taking off in an aircraft, put the oxygen mask on yourself first. Then, put on your child. Be kind to yourself and look after yourself. We have been conditioned to sacrifice a lot for our family. We, as moms, have an instinct to do that, but you need to take care of yourself to take the best care of your child.

1) One feeling you experienced during your pregnancy? I felt nauseous but never threw up. That feeling was horrendous.

Sarah Jane’s PATH TO FITNESS

Many of your fans admire your beach body. What are your top fitness tips for staying motivated and consistent with workouts?

I believe that every individual has the potential to achieve their fitness goals and attain their 'beach body.' It's essential to prioritize both physical and mental well-being and draw motivation from a positive place. Consistency plays a pivotal role; often, people delay their fitness plans, saying they'll start 'next Monday,' only to repeat the cycle. To stay on track, I recommend setting clear goals and committing to them. Whether it's joining a gym or planning to take only a few days off in a year, cultivating a habit of consistent, healthy practices is key to achieving long-lasting results.

Could you describe your typical fitness routine? What types of exercises or workouts do you enjoy the most?

My approach to fitness doesn't adhere to a set routine. I believe that physical well-being encompasses more than just exercises; it's about understanding your body's needs. My fitness regimen encompasses a holistic approach, including meditation, and yoga, focusing on flexibility and mobility, and maintaining a balanced diet. I make sure to eat what I enjoy in moderation and supplement wisely, choosing supplements tailored to my body's requirements. It's important to keep in mind that fitness isn't a one-size-fits-all journey. I rotate activities, dedicating some days to yoga and others to the gym. On days when I'm not feeling my best, I might scale down my workout to 20 minutes instead of an hour, but I never skip it because consistency is key.

Actress, VJ and singer, Sarah Jane Dias is multi-talented. Her recent standout performance in ‘Made in Heaven Season 2’ and her captivating podcast, ‘The Sarah Jane Show,’ have cemented her reputation as a versatile and celebrated figure in the entertainment world. In an exclusive with Surabhi Agarwal she talks about her recent line of work and also tells us how she manages to maintain a perfect beach body.

Nutrition plays a crucial role in fitness. Can you share some insights into your daily diet and any specific dietary preferences or tips you follow?

I begin my day with a warm glass of water, and I highly recommend staying adequately hydrated throughout the day. It's important not to overindulge in coffee or tea, and getting quality sleep is crucial for overall well-being. When it comes to my daily diet, I prioritize a balanced intake of carbohydrates, proteins, and healthy fats. I've found that for my body type, white rice works well, but it's essential to understand that what suits one person may not suit another. Each body is unique, so I believe in tailoring your diet to your specific needs. In general

• Stay hydrated,

• Get sufficient sleep and maintain a balanced intake of nutrients.

• I also prefer eating whole fruits rather than drinking fruit juices, and I incorporate fresh vegetables and seasonal foods into my diet to ensure a nutritious and sustainable approach to calorie management.

What advice do you have for individuals who aspire to achieve a healthy and fit lifestyle, especially those new to fitness?

My advice for individuals embarking on a journey toward a healthier and fitter lifestyle, especially newcomers to fitness, is to keep it simple and gradual.

• Begin by incorporating small changes, such as starting your day with warm water with lemon and honey if it suits your body, which can be helpful for weight management.

• Remember that your fitness journey starts in your mind, so it's essential to align your mindset with your goals.

• Avoid the common mistake of introducing physical activity in the morning and then indulging in high-calorie treats like gulab jamun. Instead, start with movements you genuinely enjoy, whether it's walking, yoga, or hitting the gym—movement is key.

• Approach your diet with wisdom, such as refraining from consuming carbs after 6 p.m. or finishing dinner by 8 p.m. These small adjustments can make a significant difference.

• In essence, take it one step at a time, focusing on fixing your mindset, hydration, physical activity, and dietary choices, and gradually incorporate one new positive change each week.

Maintaining a balanced diet can be a struggle for many. Could you share some of your favourite healthy recipes or snacks that help you stay on track with your fitness goals?

Balancing my diet is essential, and I have some favourite snacks and recipes that align with my fitness goals. I enjoy energy balls made from dates, nuts, and seeds, as well as homemade chikki prepared with jaggery in moderation. I opt for granola with Greek yogurt for breakfast or a snack, focusing on lower-sugar options. Peanut butter is a favourite of mine, and I include it sensibly despite its cholesterol content, as it suits my body. Additionally, I find smoothies to be a convenient and nutritious choice.

Lastly, what projects or goals are you currently working on in both your acting career and fitness journey that you'd like to share with your fans and followers?

I'm delighted to share my current projects and goals with my fans and followers. Following 'Made in Heaven 3,' I'm actively engaged in two distinct projects—one in fiction and the other in documentary. Additionally, I'm excited to announce that two new web series are in the works, set for release later this year.

On the creative front, I'm gearing up for Season 2 of 'The Sarah Jane Show,' my podcast channel, where I engage in intriguing conversations. As a musician, I recently released a track titled 'In Your Eyes' on YouTube, under the banner of the European label Micu Mice, extending my creative pursuits worldwide. While juggling these projects, I maintain my dedication to my fitness and nutrition goals, strategically planning my days, even during demanding shoots, to stay on track.

Patan, once a fortified city of the Chaulukya (or Solanki) dynasty, is now known as a culture-rich city of Gujarat. Two significant credits are associated with it at the slightest mention of it. First, Patan is a treasure trove of historical and architectural gems, and second, it is home to the Geographical Indication (GI) tagged Patola royal sari weaves, which never cease to impress designers and fashionistas worldwide. Manjulika Pramod discovers more compelling reasons to travel to this warm and welcoming city in northern Gujarat state.

revisiting the heritage city of patan in Gujarat

Medieval Era: Anhilpur Patan was the capital of Gujarat's Chavda and Chaulukya dynasties

In the medieval era, King Vanraj Chavda reacquired his lost kingdom and declared Anhilpur Patan the capital. Later, the town served as the capital of Gujarat for nearly 650 years. Patan grew up as the centre of power for the Solanki dynasty, and the various architectural marvels magnified its character. Several magnificent temples, palaces, and monuments were commissioned in Patan in its heydays. Despite the political variations and wrath of the invaders, Patan never lost its sheen. In fact, with the cultural diversity that seeped in, Patan evolved into a city of traditions and culture with a plethora of attractions.

This step-well-built as a memorial to a king by his wife is nothing less than remarkable. The seven levels are elaborate artistry, design, and engineering work. Step wells are inverted temple-like structures with a long corridor of steps leading to the water tank. Their sanctity is related to the importance of water in our lives. The states of Gujarat and Rajasthan have many step wells, but Rani-ki-Vav is stupendously beautiful, making it to the coveted list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 2014. It is known for its astounding structure, intricate carvings, traditional motifs, effervescent design elements, and archaeological importance.

TRAVEL

Curiosity and bewilderment pave the way as you begin to stride along its stone steps. The presence of more than five hundred mythological, celestial, and secular imageries on its walls, floors, etc., make it a page straight from the history book. One can only visit till the 6th floor. The accessibility to the tank has been closed due to safety concerns.

Rani-ki-Vav was commissioned by Queen Udayamati 1060 in the loving memory of her husband, Raja Bhimdev I of the Solanki Dynasty. This architectural marvel remained submerged under mud and sand for decades, only to be restored and excavated a few decades ago. Every year, a festival named ‘Rani Ka Vav Festival’ is celebrated here with great pleasure and delight.

GI-tagged Patan Patola weaves

A trip to Patan is complete once you have seen the real deal of its double ikat weaves, one of the finest handmade textiles in India. Patola is also called the ‘Queen of Silks’ and is made from a time-honoured technique. It is regarded as one of the most exquisite and costliest patterns of sarees because of the invaluable time that goes into making it. Only three surviving Salvi families have been protecting the tradition and keeping the art alive with their dedication, passion, and love for the art. The Salvi weavers did not hail from Patan but arrived from Karnataka and Maharashtra around the 12th century.

What makes Patan Patola special? The resist-dyeing process uses the warp and weft technique, abstract designs/ geometric patterns, a vibrant colour palette, and the extreme precision with which it is made. A regular saree takes four months to 1 year to complete. Even one displaced thread can ruin the whole design because a perfect Patola must look and feel the same on both sides. A trip to the Patola House is a must-have on every itinerary because this is where one will find answers to some of the most relevant questions like, ‘What makes it a traditional art form? What is the making process? Why is it so expensive, and what are the motifs used? Curious travellers may also request a tour to witness the processes involved. Even Rani-ki-Vav has depictions of Patola designs.

Sahastralinga Talav, museums, sarovars, gardens, etc.

History enthusiasts must take advantage of the most extensive artificial reservoir from the Chalukya dynasty. It was commissioned under King Durlabh Raja, thus also called Durlabh Saravor, and was later repaired and renovated by King Siddharaja in the medieval era. Though dry now, Sahastralinga Talav is known for its small shrines on the surface platform and lingas carved on its walls. The water from the Saraswati River would travel to the step well through an inlet channel and then flow around the small temples.

The history buffs must also make the most of the museums there. Prabhas Patan Museum, Patan Patola Heritage Museum, and Patan City Museum will introduce you to the city's traditions, culture, and crafts. Patan also has many outdoor spaces in the form of sarovars and gardens for picnicking and calming walks.

Hemachandracharya Gyan Mandir and several Jain Temples

Patan was home to many scholars, and with time, it rose to the status of a major pilgrimage centre of Jainism during the Solanki dynasty. History tells us that over 100 stunning Jain temples were built during the medieval era. One of the largest temples is the Panchasara Parshvanath Jain Derasar. Patan is also home to Hemachandracharya, a renowned and great scholar from Gujarat. Gyan Mandir, which takes after his name, contains around 25,000 ancient manuscripts of Sanskrit and Prakrit, acknowledging Patan as the land of scholarship and learning.

In Patan, you must also explore its vibrant streets, narrow lanes, colourful bazaars, and local delicacies.

How do you reach Patan?

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Airport, Ahmedabad, is the closest airport to Patan. A road trip from there takes only two hours. If you travel from nearby cities, trains and buses travel to Patan.

MYTHICAL CHRONICLES: A TALE OF TWO VISIONARY AUTHORS

Journey into the realm of mythology with us as we explore the works of two renowned authors who have carved a niche in this captivating genre. In this exclusive feature, we delve into the imaginative worlds crafted by Smriti Dewan and Manini Priyan, two celebrated figures who have breathed fresh life into age-old myths. Prepare to embark on a literary adventure that reinterprets and reimagines timeless stories, breathing new vitality into ancient narratives.

How do you balance tradition and innovation in your work?

Smriti Dewan is a professional screenwriter and director who has spent nearly a decade in the television industry and OTT platforms. She began her career in postproduction and moved on to work as an assistant director, host, and recently turned author with her debut novel Urmila: The Forgotten Princess.

Can you tell us about your writing journey and what inspired you to delve into mythology?

I'm an accidental writer; I aspired to direct. I never had any training in writing, and in my line of work, screenplay writing is a complicated craft. But I would sit in many writing sessions and was gently nudged in that direction. When the opportunity of writing an episode for a TV show presented itself, I was given a chance to try. The whole experience turned out so creatively satisfying that by the end of it, I knew this was what I wanted to do for a living.

Your book explores the reinterpretation of mythological stories. What drew you to this particular approach in your writing?

Urmila is a character that is sleeping for 14 years in half the versions of Ramayana! So, making her a central character and the narrator opened up a new set of avenues. The history of Mithila, its folklore, her parents, her grandmother, and the matriarchy of the kingdom of Patkai. There was just so much scope to create this world on the helms of the main story, a world beyond Ayodhya and Lanka that by itself became the foundation of this approach. Also, after reading a dozen interpretations of Ramayana, where all Urmila is made to be is this delicate creature, one starts to get an itch to rectify the issue.

My endeavor as a writer is always to tell an enjoyable and relatable story. Tales are timeless because the crises that characters find themselves in are universal. But none of the characters' inner workings made sense to me as a modern woman. We can dismiss only so much with the adage, ‘It was a different time.’ Times change, values change, and therein comes my need to create that world and the character in a way that today's readers can understand. I keep the journey of the original epic the same, but I try to show you the same sightings from a different angle.

Can you highlight some challenges you faced while writing about mythology and how you overcame them?

We live in a time when writing about mythology can bring you under intense scrutiny. We are emotionally attached to our myths and lores because we worship these gods. Seeing them as just characters on paper takes a certain degree of detachment. The challenge is in the writing itself. If the reader accepts the world you created, you have won.

Are there any upcoming projects or writing endeavors you'd like to share with your readers?

I have a historical novel coming out next, ‘Yashodhara,’ which is based on the wife of Gautam Buddha. ‘Chiranjeevi’ is another franchise based on the Hindu immortal gods I'm working on for a screen adaptation with Blue Monkey films. And a couple more film and OTT scripts are in the pipeline for the following year.

Manini Priyan Olikara is a postgraduate degree holder who discovered her love for writing during her second Master’s program at King’s College, London. During the day, she writes strategic workforce solutions as a Corporate HR business partner, and during the night, she works on her series of novels in science fiction and fantasy. In her debut novel, ‘Search for Transcendence: The Beginning,’ she fuses science fiction and familiar mythological characters.

Can you tell us about your writing journey and what inspired you to delve into mythology?

My fascination with mythology began at a young age, as I was captivated by the rich tapestry of ancient tales and the timeless themes they conveyed. The power of mythology to connect us with our past and delve into the mysteries of the universe inspired me to delve deeper into this enchanting world. Through my writing, I aim to breathe new life into myths, infuse them with fresh perspectives, and transport readers to extraordinary realms where gods, heroes, and monsters come alive.

Your book explores the reinterpretation of mythological stories. What drew you to this particular approach in your writing?

Myths are deeply ingrained in human culture and passed down through generations, but they are adaptable and open to multiple interpretations. It allows us to explore new angles, challenge traditional narratives, and shed light on different aspects of human nature. This writing approach will enable me to breathe new life into familiar myths, infuse them with contemporary relevance, and make them attractive to a young audience.

Could you share insights into your creative process when reimagining these timeless tales? How do you balance tradition and innovation in your work?

The first step is complete immersion in the source material, and I immerse myself in the original myths. Then, the next step is identifying key elements that make the tale memorable and resonate with readers. These could be iconic characters, moral dilemmas, or transformative journeys, and then looking for points of departure where I can introduce innovation while staying true to the spirit of the myth. But the main thing while trying to balance tradition and bringing a fresh perspective is to ensure that the story's essence remains intact while offering a new and compelling take.

Can you highlight some challenges you faced while writing about mythology and how you overcame them?

One challenge is capturing the essence of the original myth while adding my creative

spin. Reimagining myths requires finding fresh angles and perspectives, and for this, I explored different character viewpoints, added depth to secondary characters, and introduced unexpected twists to create a sense of discovery and surprise. Writing this book has been a continuous learning process that allowed me to grow as a writer and offer readers an engaging and thought-provoking exploration of mythology.

Are there any upcoming projects or writing endeavors you'd like to share with your readers?

Book 2 of the series –‘Dead Rising, Search for Transcendence’ is ready to be launched. I am excited for the readers to discover the series' second book that further expands this universe of characters. I have a couple of screenwriting projects also in the works. The last year has been an incredible journey for me, and I am very excited to be in this phase of my writing journey.
