From the E DITOR
Because Mental Health Can Never Be Spoken of Enough!

This festive season feels like a déjà vu of sorts. Movies are making a comeback — Kantara: Chapter 1 is here. Jolly LLB 3 is back. Housefull 5, War 2 — and God knows how many more are waiting to return to theatres. And it struck me: if movies can come back again and again, why can’t I bring back the one subject I believe can never be spoken about enough? Mental health Because no matter how many times I write about it, it is never enough.
We’ve all seen it. A friend who “zones out” too often, a brother who seems to be talking to someone who isn’t really there, a loved one who suddenly withdraws. Too frequently, we excuse it: “She’s traveling.” “He’s just not in the mood.” But let’s be honest — these are not moods to brush off, nor quirks to cover up. What they really need is support. What they really need is help. And yes, that help could mean therapy. Sometimes it means medication. And that is absolutely okay. Because when someone has a heart attack, we don’t ask them if they want to go to the doctor — we take them. The same urgency applies to mental health. Stop counting “episodes” — she messaged this on the family group, he lashed out today, she cried yesterday. What matters more is the number of days your loved one is going without the treatment they desperately need.
Mental health is not a fad, not a phase, not something that only happens to “others.” The truth is sobering: the most affected age group is 16–35 years old. They aren’t strangers — they are our siblings, our friends, our spouses, even our children. Depression doesn’t discriminate — it can come from heartbreak, loneliness, or even from the pressures of being married.

break the silence. Let’s end the shame. Let’s remember that depression, anxiety, or psychosis are not weaknesses — they are illnesses. And like any illness, they need treatment, not judgment.
So, my wish for you this festive season is simple: along with new clothes, let's gift ourselves and our loved ones the courage to speak up and the strength to seek help. Because the greatest gift you can give — to yourself and to anyone, for that matter — is the gift of feeling right!

Rishab Shetty

RETURNS WITH KANTARA CHAPTER 1

Kannada star Rishab Shetty, who captured nationwide attention with his 2022 blockbuster Kantara, is back with his muchawaited prequel, Kantara Chapter 1. At a recent press meet in Mumbai, he opened up about his journey—from working as a driver and office boy in the city to becoming a pan-India actor and filmmaker. Speaking with honesty and gratitude, Rishab reflected on cinema’s power to transform lives and shared insights into the making of his ambitious new film.
Your journey from driver in Mumbai to leading the Kantara Chapter 1 is inspiring. How do you look back on it?
For me, Mumbai is very special. Back in 2008, I worked as an office assistant in a production house in Andheri West, and also as a producer’s driver. While eating vada pav on the road near that office, I never imagined I would come this far. Cinema has given me so much love, respect, and blessings—far beyond what I could dream of. I’m incredibly grateful.
Everyone is talking about how your village came together for the Kantara Chapter 1 event. Tell us about that.
Everyone in my village, in Kundapura’s Keradi, was part of the filmmaking process. It felt like the entire place had turned into a film village. The whole town became a studio. I’m deeply grateful to my villagers, the crew, my wife Pragathi, professors, cultural dancers, their families, and even the seniors who guided us. This film was built on collective effort.
The prequel is set centuries ago. How did you bring that world to life?
It was one of the toughest challenges. We had no direct references for the 4th–5th century. Everything—production, costumes, sets, was built from reading, listening, and imagining. We were very particular about the look, the backdrop, the characters’ behaviour, and even the language. The goal was to make it feel authentic while maintaining a cinematic and entertaining quality.

Everyone in my village, in Kundapura’s Keradi, was part of the filmmaking process. It felt like the entire place had turned into a film village. The whole town became a studio.

You juggle the roles of writer, director, and actor. How do you manage it all?
Honestly, I just go with the flow. It’s possible only because of my team—they are my big army. I may be the face of it, like a king, but it was never just my effort. It was my vision and dream, but my team made it their own. Whatever we’ve achieved is because of them. Switching between actor and director felt completely organic. In some action sequences, I would perform, then immediately grab the mic, go to a height, and check the framing or shots. It was intense, but the flow of the process made it manageable, and I could stay fully involved in both roles throughout the shoot.
After the success of Kantara, did you feel pressure working on the prequel?
I see it as motivation, not pressure. Pressure stops you from creating freely. For me, it’s a responsibility to work harder and put in more effort to bring a story that audiences will connect with. That’s the spirit behind Kantara Chapter 1.
You often speak about cinema being everything to you. How do you balance life and work?
Honestly, for me, there’s no difference between life and cinema. They are the same. I live, think, and breathe cinema 24x7.
Rishab, how do you respond to people who say Pragathi got involved just because she’s your wife?
(Smiles) People often say that, but it’s not true. She is extremely talented and committed. She didn’t get this role because she’s my wife, but because she is the right person for the job.
Honestly,
I just go with the flow. It’s possible only because of my team—they are my big army. I may be the face of it, like a king, but it was never just my effort. It was my vision and dream, but my team made it their own.

Pragathi on Rishab:
As the costume designer and creative partner, Pragathi Shetty offers a rare glimpse into Rishab Shetty’s dedication, passion, and relentless drive. From juggling multiple roles to pouring his heart into every detail, she reveals what fuels the filmmaker behind the blockbuster prequel.
Cinema Is His Whole Life
For Rishab, cinema is everything. This project wasn’t easy at all — he was the writer, actor, and director, which demanded a lot physically, mentally, and emotionally. But thanks to the blessings of our daivas and the love of the audience, we managed to pull it off."
Driven by Dedication:
I’ve seen how deeply committed he is. Day and night, he was immersed in the film — thinking, writing, performing, directing. It was exhausting, but his passion kept him going.
Giving Back to the Audience:
When we made Kantara (2022), it was a small Kannada film, yet the audience showered us with so much love and support. That inspired Rishab to give something bigger in return — a story that honours that love and goes beyond what we imagined.

As the festival of lights approaches, the air is filled with warmth, joy, and celebration. Diwali isn’t just about lamps and fireworks — it’s about togetherness, traditions, and creating memories with loved ones. Celebrities, too, cherish this special time of the year, blending cultural rituals with their personal festive styles. From performing pujas at home to indulging in sweets guilt-free, each of them has their own way of keeping the festive spirit alive. Here’s how stars like Adivi Sesh, Neha Shetty, and others celebrate Diwali and what the festival truly means to them.

Neha Shetty
"Diwali is not just about lighting lamps, it’s about illuminating our hearts with hope, kindness, and courage. This is the festival I always look forward to, and I make sure to celebrate it with friends and family. For me, attending parties, spending time with my close ones, and binging on delicious festive food without guilt is what makes Diwali so special every year," says Neha

Adivi Sesh

"I love the festive spirit that flows from the 10 days of Navaratri to Dussehra and then Diwali. It feels like the entire nation is soaked in the vibrance of culture, dance, and celebration. At our home, we welcome the goddess idol for Dussehra and worship for ten days, while for Diwali, we perform the Lakshmi Puja. The feminine energy these festivals bring is wonderful. And, of course, no festival is complete without indulging in sweets and spreading joy. I don’t burst crackers because we have pets at home, but I truly enjoy watching the colourful sky," says Adivi Sesh. spreading
Avika Gor
"For me, Diwali is about spreading love, kindness, and warmth. I believe in celebrating responsibly while cherishing time with loved ones. Visiting friends and family, exchanging hugs, and sharing sweets is a tradition I never miss. After all, the true spirit of Diwali lies in spreading joy and togetherness," says Avika Gor.

Latest festive fashion Trends in India

The smell of marigold flowers, the glow of diyas, the happy noise of families coming together. India’s festive season is here again, and with it comes the excitement of dressing up. Clothes are not just clothes during festivals; they are part of the celebration itself. This year’s festive fashion is a mix of tradition and modern style. From sarees to lehengas, from bold jewellery to subtle embroidery, here’s what is trending in 2025.

Sarees with a twist

The saree is timeless. But this year, designers are giving it new life. Pre-draped sarees, gown-style sarees, and double-pallu drapes are everywhere. Designer Anamika Khanna is renowned for her dramatic draping styles, which add movement and glamour.

Stars like Deepika Padukone and Kiara Advani have been wearing sarees with bold pleats, sculpted borders, and fresh silhouettes. It’s the same saree we love but reimagined for today.

Mix and Match Festive Separates
Gone are the days of sticking to one complete set of a lehenga or a sari. Now people are mixing and matching. Heavy skirts are paired with light blouses or embroidered jackets, often accompanied by plain shararas
Layered looks are trending, think capes over lehengas or organza jackets over silk. This style makes outfits versatile. You can wear the same piece in different ways for various functions.

Colours that surprise
Traditional festivals' colours like red, maroon, and gold are still there, but 2025 is experimenting. Soft tones like sage green, dusty mauve, teal, and ochre are shining this year.
At Diwali parties, many celebs wore gold tissue sarees that looked festive yet classy. For Navaratri, green became the star colour, especially on the day dedicated to Goddess Skanda Mata.

Craft Revival and Sustainable Touch
This year, old crafts are making a comeback in new and innovative ways. Hand embroidery, block prints, and vintage fabrics are being reused to create stunning outfits.
Designer Mayyur Girotra even created a lehenga from five old brocade sarees, proving that fashion can be sustainable and stylish.
Mirror work, chikankari, and phulkari are being reimagined in modern cuts and minimalist designs, offering the best of both worlds: heritage and chic.

Jewellery That Anchors
Jewellery is moving towards “less is more.” Instead of wearing heavy sets, people are opting for single statement pieces.
• Big jhumkas or a bold cuff bracelet
• Pearls and kundan in modern shapes
• Waist belts (kamarbandhs) with geometric designs
• Floral pins and hair chains for that extra touch
One strong piece can define the whole look.

Comfort First
Festivals mean long evenings, so comfort matters. Soft silks, organza, and cotton blends are increasingly being used. Outfits now have elastic inserts, lighter dupattas, and detachable jackets.
Fashion is not just about looking good anymore; it’s about feeling good while celebrating.

Tips to Wear the Trends
• Pick one highlight — let one part (like sleeves or colour) be bold and keep the rest simple.
• Keep tradition alive — Even with modern cuts, add a zari border or silk accent.
• Choose versatile pieces — A skirt or blouse that works in multiple outfits is a good investment.
• Stay comfortable — If you’re uncomfortable, the look won’t work.
• Balance jewellery — Big earrings? Skip the heavy necklace. Bold belt? Keep the neck light.

FARZI BEACH GOA:
COCKTAILS, SUNSET VIBES & PLAYFUL PLATES BY THE SEA
If you’re looking for a beachside spot in Morjim that mixes sundowner energy with inventive cocktails, Farzi Beach Goa is worth a stop. Part of Zorawar Kalra’s ever-growing stable of Farzified concepts, this laid-back restaurant at Mayfair on the Sea brings Farzi’s trademark playfulness to a breezy coastal setting, complete with live music and a front-row view of the Arabian Sea.
SIP: CREATIVE COCKTAILS BY THE SHORE
The bar menu is where Farzi Beach really sparkles. The KitKat Picante—featuring tequila, fresh watermelon, Tabasco, and lime—is an instant mood-setter, balancing sweet heat with tropical freshness. Picante lovers can also try the Wasabi Fistron, a sharp kick of wasabi, mint, and cucumber, or the Habanero Picante for a deeper spice hit.
From the Farzi style creations, the Kokum Collins (Goan kokum puree, gin, citrus) is tangy and refreshing, while the Chuski Margarita riffs on the classic with an aam panna chuski perched in the glass. With an extensive cocktail list covering everything from fruity spritzes to smoky infusions, there’s something for every palate—and every Instagram story

BITE: FUSION PLATES & FAMILIAR COMFORTS
Farzi Beach’s food menu is extensive, featuring a diverse range of Indian, Asian, European, and Middle Eastern flavours. Tapas like Dahi Puchka Shots and Hibiscus Pani Puri are playful and photogenic—the latter comes with a roserimmed edge and the option of spiking it with vodka. The Asparagus & Edamame Dim Sum is soft and fresh, while the Dal Chawal Arancini cleverly fuses homestyle comfort with Italian crispness.
For non-vegetarians, the Chicken Changrezi Quesadilla stands out with its juicy filling and a smoky red-pepper sauce. Pizzas are crowd-pleasers too: the Tropical Temptation is all about sunshine flavours, and the Jasper Chicken Pizza piles pulled chicken, red paprika, and spring onion over a thin crust. If you're looking for something heartier, consider ordering the Vegetables Sizzling Pot—garlicky jasmine rice served alongside vegetables in a smoky pot, perfect for sharing.
The menu is vast, running from tapas to bao, burgers, pasta, Indian plates, and global grills, all plated with Farzi’s usual flair. Not every plate aims for fireworks, but most dishes are wellexecuted, and the playful presentation keeps things lively.

ATMOSPHERE: SUNDOWNERS & SEA BREEZE
Designed as a more casual sundowner lounge than a formal dining room, Farzi Beach flows seamlessly from indoor seating to an open deck overlooking the sand. Come around 5 p.m. to snag a table outdoors—the sunset glow paired with good music sets the perfect backdrop for a round of cocktails. Evenings often feature live DJs or performances, adding to the laid-back beach club vibe.
GOOD TO KNOW
• Location: Farzi Beach, Mayfair on the Sea, Morjim, Goa
• Timings: 12:00 p.m. – 12:00 a.m. (kitchen closes around 11:00 p.m.)
• Average Price for Two: ₹2,500–₹3,000 (without alcohol); cocktails start around ₹450 each
VERDICT
Farzi Beach Goa is less about white-tablecloth dining and more about celebrating sunsets, inventive drinks, and food that’s fun rather than fussy. If you’re looking for a place where you can sip something clever, nibble through an eclectic menu, and watch the sun melt into the sea, this Morjim newcomer is well worth adding to your list.

Raia Ristorante & Bar: Panjim’s New Culinary Hotspot
Nestled in the heart of Panjim, Raia Ristorante & Bar is quickly becoming a go-to spot for food lovers looking for variety, flavour, and a vibrant dining experience. The name Raia, inspired by a village in Portugal and symbolizing the sun's rays, reflects the restaurant’s bright and inviting atmosphere. With airy interiors during the day and a cozy, elegant ambience by night, Raia sets the stage for meals that feel both special and comforting.

e began with the seasonal Thai Mango Salad — a refreshing plate of juicy mangoes tossed with bell peppers, onions, and a zingy Thai dressing. It was fresh, light, and the perfect start to the meal. This dish is a part of their seasonal menu, which displays their commitment to using ingredients at their peak, offering guests a dining experience that feels both timely and indulgent. With a menu that changes to reflect what’s best each season, there’s always something new and delightful to discover
From their small plates, the Avocado & Burrata Toast and the Mushroom & Truffle Open Toast stood out — indulgent yet straightforward, perfect for an anytime bite. From the global menu, the Cilantro Prawns were a clear winner, marinated in a vibrant mix of cilantro, garlic, pepper, lime juice, and olive oil, offering a burst of flavour in every bite. The Onion Rings, crisp and golden, made for a satisfying snack, while the Kathi Rolls — available in paneer, chicken, lamb, and beef — were soft, succulent, and full of flavour.

In the Italian section, the Spinach & Ricotta Ravioli was a standout. Handmade and filled with blanched spinach and ricotta, it came in a rich tomato-based sauce that was both hearty and delicate. We also tried their Wood-Fired Pizzas — The Forest, featuring mushrooms, parsley, truffle oil, and buffalo mozzarella, and the Pesto Chicken Pizza, which was creamy and fragrant. Both were flavourful, though the soft Neapolitan-style crust might be a matter of personal preference.
The Asian menu also impressed, offering starters like Thread Prawns and Spring Rolls, alongside mains such as Bok Choy Noodles and classic Thai Curry. For those craving Goan comfort food, Raia has you covered with Xacuti, Cafreal, and Goan Fish Curry, all prepared with authentic flavours. From the Indian kitchen, we sampled the Egg Biryani, and it didn’t disappoint — aromatic, flavourful, and perfectly spiced.
Desserts were the perfect ending: the Motichur Tres Leches, a creative blend of Indian and global flavours, was soft, sweet, and indulgent, while the classic Seradura brought a nostalgic touch of Goan-Portuguese tradition.

Raia’s cocktail menu deserves a special mention. The Melon Tini, with gin, fresh watermelon, passionfruit, and lime juice, was refreshing and summery. A standout was the Kokum Picante — a tangy Goan twist on the classic Picante (not yet on the menu, but hopefully soon). Whiskey lovers can’t go wrong with the Herb & Spirit, a smooth mix of whiskey, Aperol, and rosemary. For something bold, the Mango Chilli, featuring vodka, mango purée, and a kick of Tabasco, is a must-try.
What makes Raia truly special is that, despite its vast menu — spanning Indian, Asian, Italian, Goan, and grills — each dish feels carefully prepared and flavourful, not just added for variety. Pair that with the welcoming ambience and thoughtful details, and you have a restaurant that’s perfect for everything from brunch with friends to a celebratory dinner.

Verdict:
Raia Ristorante & Bar is not just another multi-cuisine spot; it’s a carefully curated dining experience where every dish tells a story. Whether you’re in the mood for local Goan classics, global flavours, or innovative cocktails, Raia has something that will leave you coming back for more.

Why it’s unique
Fusion at its core – It marries Rasmalai (an Indian mithai) with the global favourite Tres Leches Cake, turning a traditional dessert into something modern and fun.
Easy to make – Unlike elaborate Indian sweets, this one is approachable: sponge + cream + rasmalai + garnish, yet the result feels gourmet.

Recipe - Rasmalai Trifle Recipe
Ingredients -
• 1 medium vanilla sponge cake (store-bought, eggless works best)
• 10–12 rasmalai pieces (with the milk they come in)
• 1 cup whipping cream (or fresh cream + 2 tbsp powdered sugar)
• ½ tsp cardamom powder
• A few saffron strands (optional)
• Chopped pistachios, almonds, rose petals for garnish
Instructions -
Step 1: Prep the sponge
• Cut the sponge cake into slices or cubes (depending on the dish you’re using – trifle bowl or glass jars).
• Keep aside.
Step 2: Flavour the cream
• Whip the cream with powdered sugar until soft peaks form.
• Add cardamom powder (and saffron, if using) and fold gently.
Step 3: Assemble layers
1. Place a layer of sponge cake at the base of your serving dish.
2. Spoon over rasmalai milk generously to soak the cake (like Tres leches).
3. Add a layer of cardamom whipped cream.
4. Place a few pieces of rasmalai on top (you can cut them in half for even distribution).
5. Repeat the layers until your dish is whole.
Step 4: Final touch
• Finish with a smooth layer of cream.
• Garnish with rasmalai balls, chopped pistachios, almonds, and rose petals.
• Chill for 2–3 hours before serving so the flavours meld.

Recipe
Ingredients -
Dough
• 200 g watermelon seed powder
• 200 g oat flour
• 200 g boiled sweet potatoes, mashed

• 1 cup monk fruit sweetener
• 5 cups water
• A few cardamom pods, lightly crushed
• A few saffron strands
• Dried rose petals (optional) Filling
• 1–2 pecans per jamun
For Frying
• Oil, for deep frying (or air fry for a lighter version)
Instructions -
1. In a bowl, combine watermelon seed powder, oat flour, mashed sweet potatoes, and cardamom powder. Knead into a soft dough. Set aside.
2. In a saucepan, add monk fruit sweetener, water, cardamom pods, saffron, and rose petals. Bring to a boil, then simmer until slightly thickened. Keep warm.
3. Take a small portion of dough, flatten it slightly, and place 1–2 pecans in the centre. Seal the edges. Roll into smooth balls.
4. Fry in paniyaram moulds or air fry the balls on medium heat until golden brown.
5. Transfer fried jamuns into the warm syrup. Let soak until soft and syrupy. Serve warm.

Natasha’s Notes
• Air fry at 180°C for 12–15 minutes, brushing lightly with ghee for that fried taste.
• Swap pecans with almonds, pistachios, or even dark chocolate chips for a fun filling.
• For extra richness, add a spoonful of ghee to the dough while kneading.
• Don’t overcrowd the air fryer; jamuns need space to cook evenly.
• These jamuns taste even better the next day after soaking overnight in syrup.

Trends, Tips & Timeless Looks for Modern Brides
In 2025, bridal beauty is all about achieving glowing skin, embracing individuality, and exuding timeless elegance. Celebrity makeup artist Bianca Louzado, known for her work with some of India’s most famous brides, shares her expert insights on the looks, palettes, and tips that are defining this year’s weddings.
What’s the most significant bridal makeup trend of 2025?
Fresh, luminous skin with a ‘your skin but better’ finish is dominating this year. Brides want understated elegance—soft sculpting, creamy products, and light-reflecting highlights that create an ethereal glow. Brides are still inspired by celebrity weddings. “For Sanjana Ganesan at her wedding with Jasprit Bumrah, I created a fresh, skin-focused look that remains a favourite today. Kiara Advani’s dewy glow and Alia Bhatt’s romantic minimalism are also top references, while Priyanka Chopra’s modern-traditional fusion appeals to brides who want balance." For intimate and destination weddings, soft glam—effortless, romantic looks— are most popular. But in grand, multi-day North Indian celebrations, traditional glam with bold eyes and vibrant colours continues to shine.
Colours & Palettes to Watch
• Warm peach, muted rose, soft corals
• Gold, champagne, and bronze shimmer for the eyes
• Matte berry lips for winter weddings
• Glossy nude lips for summer ceremonies
How does destination wedding makeup differ by climate?
• Beach weddings: Lightweight, sweat-resistant products with SPF and minimal powdering.
• Cold climates: Rich hydration layers, creamy textures, subtle highlighter.
• Dry regions like Rajasthan: Matte long-wear bases with hydrating prep, warm earthy tones.

Bianca Louzado, Celebrity Makeup Artist
Do’s & Don’ts for Brides
See a dermatologist several months in advance and stick to a consistent skincare routine. Avoid experimenting with facials or new skincare products right before the big day.
What mistakes do brides commonly make?
Over-exfoliating, last-minute treatments, and ignoring the event’s lighting when finalizing looks. Lighting matters more than most people realize. If a trial is offered, book it 3–6 months in advance so the look can evolve with outfits and accessories.
Are brides becoming more conscious about beauty products?
Absolutely. More brides want clean, vegan, and cruelty-free products. It’s about performance and values— especially for those with sensitive skin.
One tip for makeup that lasts through long ceremonies.
Layering is key—thin, even layers with a mix of powder and setting spray. It keeps the makeup intact without looking cakey.
Hair & Accessories That Complement Makeup
• Sleek low buns with fresh flowers, pearls, or jewelled pins for weddings.
• Textured waves with minimal accessories for mehendi and sangeet.
How can brides create a timeless look for their wedding album?
Stick to neutral tones, softly defined eyes, and well-balanced features. Avoid overly trendy elements—they don’t age well. Classic elegance always looks stunning, even 20 years later.

The Ultimate Guide To A Family Friendly Halloween

Halloween is more than just a day for candy and costumes. It’s a celebration of community, creativity and a touch of spooky fun. As the leaves turn and the air grows crisp, families everywhere are looking for ways to make this holiday special. If you are searching for ideas, Dhanush Kumar brings you some memorable and family-friendly Halloween ideas.
Transforming your home into a haunted haven is a fantastic way to get everyone in the Halloween spirit.

• Carving pumpkins is a family tradition. Lay out old newspapers, grab some carving tools, and let your family’s creativity shine. For younger children, painting pumpkins is a safer and equally fun alternative.

• Use warm, orange string lights to create a festive glow. Cast eerie shadows with paper cutouts of bats and spiders on windows.
• A simple ghost made from a white sheet and a balloon, or a string of paper bats, can add a lot of character without much effort.

Choosing a costume is often the highlight of Halloween. Encourage a group of themed costumes for a fantastic family look.
• Go as a family of superheroes, a collection of farm animals, or characters from your favourite movie.
• Repurpose old clothes and craft supplies. A cardboard box can become a robot, and a green t-shirt with some design can transform into a friendly frog. The best costumes are often the ones that you make together.

While trick-or-treat is a must, there are many activities to enjoy, such as:
• Monster Movie Marathon: Curl up on the couch with popcorn and a selection of age-appropriate spooky films. Classics like It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown, or Hocus Pocus are always great choices.
• Spooky Story Time: Gather around a fire pit or in a dimly lit room and share not-too-scary ghost stories.
• Themed Treats: Bake and decorate Halloweenthemed cookies or cupcakes for a fun treat. Make "mummy" hot dogs by wrapping them in strips of dough before baking.
The History of Halloween
The name Halloween is a contraction of All Hallows' Eve. The night before the Western Christian feast of All Hallows’ Day. However, its roots go much deeper.
The holiday’s origins are often traced back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain. This festival marked the end of summer and the harvest, as well as the beginning of the dark, cold winter. It was believed that on this night, the boundary between the living and the dead became blurred. Celts wore costumes and lit bonfires to ward off spirits.
As different cultures and traditions merged. Samhain’s customs were incorporated into other celebrations.
The Roman festivals of Ferilia and a day to honour Pomona, the goddess of fruit and trees, were brought to Britain. By the 8th century, Pope Gregory III designated November 1 as a time to honour all saints, and All Saints’ Day began to incorporate some of the old traditions of Samhain.

COASTAL GODS:
A JOURNEY THROUGH INDIA’S
MOST
POPULAR SEASIDE TEMPLES
India’s vast coastline, stretching over 7,500 kilometres, is a tapestry of crashing waves, golden sands, and vibrant spiritual energy. Along this dramatic edge of the land lie some of the country’s most revered temples, where the roar of the ocean provides a constant, natural chorus to the hymns of devotion. These aren’t just architectural marvels; they are sacred sites where the elements of nature and faith converge, telling epic tales that have withstood the test of time and tide. Dhanush Kumar writes about the most popular temples in India that stand proudly by the sea, each with a unique story to tell.
Somnath Temple, Gujarat
Perched on the shores of the Arabian Sea in Gujarat, the Somnath Temple is a powerful symbol of resilience and faith. As the first of the 12 sacred Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva, its spiritual significance is immense. However, its history is equally compelling. The temple has been destroyed and rebuilt multiple times over the centuries, a testament to the unwavering devotion of its followers. The current structure, a breathtaking blend of Chalukya architecture and modern design, stands as a beacon of hope and an eternal reminder of the cyclical nature of destruction and rebirth. The evening aarti here, with the sound of the ocean waves in the background, is a truly mesmerizing experience.

Ramanathaswamy Temple, Tamil Nadu
Located on the island of Rameswaram, the Ramanathaswamy Temple is one of the four Char Dham pilgrimage sites, making it a cornerstone of the Hindu faith. Legend has it that Lord Rama built the Ram Setu, a bridge connecting India to Sri Lanka, from this very place to rescue his wife, Sita. The temple is famed for its stunning architecture, particularly its corridors, the longest of any Hindu temple in India. With a total length of 3,850 feet and over 1,200 intricately carved pillars, walking through these halls is a humbling and awe-inspiring journey through history and mythology.
Shore Temple , Tamil Nadu
A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Shore Temple at Mahabalipuram is an architectural gem of the Pallava dynasty. Built in the eighth century, this granite temple complex is one of the oldest structural stone temples in South India. It stands as a solitary survivor of what is believed to have been a City of Seven Pagodas, with the others having been lost to the sea. The temple’s intricate carvings depict deities, stories from Hindu mythology, and motifs of the Pallava era. Visiting the Shore Temple at sunrise or sunset is an unforgettable experience, as the golden light bathes the ancient stone, illuminating its timeless beauty against the backdrop of the turquoise Bay of Bengal.

Mrudeshwar Temple, Karnataka
While many coastal temples boast ancient origins, the Murudeshwar Temple in Karnataka is a unique blend of old and new. The temple’s highlight is the 123-foot-tall statue of Lord Shiva, the second-tallest in the world, which dominates the skyline and offers a stunning view of the Arabian Sea from its perch on Kanduka Hill. The temple complex also features a towering gopuram with a modern elevator that takes visitors to the top for a breathtaking panoramic view. The temple is believed to be where a piece of the Atmalinga of Lord Shiva fell after being snatched by Ravana, adding a mythological layer to its modern-day grandeur.

Jagannath Temple , Odisha
Puri, a coastal city in Odisha, is home to the majestic Jagannath Temple, a sacred site dedicated to Lord Jagannath, a form of Lord Vishnu. The temple’s towering spire is a prominent landmark, visible from the vast expanse of the Bay of Bengal. The temple’s history dates back to the 12th Century, and it is a vibrant centre of culture and spirituality. The annual Rath Yatra, where the deities are taken on a grand procession in massive, beautifully decorated chariots, is a global phenomenon, attracting millions of devotees. The temple’s mysteries, from its flag that defies the wind to the Mahaprasad that never runs short, add to its mystical allure.

HOW TO KEEP YOUR PET SAFE THIS DIWALI

Diwali is a festival of lights, joy, and togetherness—but while we celebrate with crackers and festivities, our furry friends often experience stress, fear, and anxiety. Loud noises, bright flashes, and sudden bursts of sound can be overwhelming for pets, making it essential to plan and keep them safe.
Here are some vet-approved tips and pet parent experiences to ensure your dogs and cats enjoy a stress-free Diwali.
5 Essential Diwali Safety Tips for Pets

Set up a cozy, quiet room with curtains drawn and familiar items like their bed, toys, and a water bowl. Playing soft, calming music or white noise can help mask the sound of crackers.

Engage your pets with games, new chew toys, or treat puzzles to keep them entertained. Keeping them occupied is a great way to reduce their attention on outside noises.

Well before Diwali, play recordings of crackers at a low volume while rewarding them with treats. Gradually increase the sound over time to help them build tolerance.
While festive outfits may look cute, some fabrics can cause discomfort or restrict movement in pets. Opt for breathable, lightweight, petsafe accessories instead.

For pets with extreme anxiety, consult your veterinarian. They may suggest calming sprays, supplements, or other safe solutions.
Pet Parents Share Their Diwali Safety Tips
Deepika Malani & Goofy
Goofy, 1-year-old Maltipoo
“Keep your pet in a quiet, comfortable room with the curtains drawn and some soft music playing. It helps mask the sound of crackers and reduces their stress.”

Kavita Rao with Max & Tyke
Max – Beagle, 5 years, Tyke – French Bulldog, 2 years
“At least a week before the fireworks begin, I regularly play a recording of cracker sounds softly while giving them a few treats—gradually raising the volume so loud noises feel less scary when the real ones start. This has worked for me.”

5 BOOKS ON MYTHOLOGY AND WISDOM TO LIGHT UP YOUR DIWALI
Diwali, the festival of lights, is more than just a celebration of lamps, sweets, and fireworks—it’s also a time for reflection, learning, and the triumph of wisdom over ignorance. Just as we brighten our homes with diyas, we can illuminate our minds with stories and insights from mythology that hold timeless lessons. This festive season, here are five books that combine storytelling, philosophy, and practical wisdom, making them perfect companions—or gifts—for the Diwali season.

THE BHAGAVAD GITA: AS IT IS
by A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada
At its heart, Diwali celebrates the victory of good over evil, and the Bhagavad Gita embodies this essence. Presented as a dialogue between Krishna and Arjuna, the text explores the concepts of duty, courage, and self-realization. This edition, with detailed commentary, makes the teachings accessible for both seekers and casual readers.
RAMAYANA: THE GAME OF LIFE (SERIES)
by Shubha Vilas
The Ramayana isn’t just a tale of Rama’s journey—it’s also a guide to relationships, leadership, and life’s challenges. Shubha Vilas retells the epic in a way that emphasizes its life lessons, offering practical takeaways for readers. This makes the series especially meaningful during Diwali, when Rama’s return to Ayodhya is celebrated.

THE COMPLETE MAHABHARATA (CONDENSED RETELLING)
by Ramesh Menon
Grand, complex, and deeply human, the Mahabharata is a treasure trove of wisdom. Menon’s retelling brings the epic to life with rich storytelling, making it approachable for modern readers. It’s a reminder of how choices, dharma, and destiny intertwine—a theme worth reflecting upon during the festival of lights.

THE SEVEN SECRETS OF VISHNU by Devdutt Pattanaik
In this book, Pattanaik explores Lord Vishnu’s avatars and their symbolic meaning. Each chapter decodes how these stories mirror human evolution, spiritual growth, and the balance between chaos and order. It’s a fascinating read for those seeking a deeper understanding of Hindu mythology and its relevance today.

. THE UPANISHADS
by Eknath Easwaran
For readers drawn to more profound philosophy, The Upanishads are India’s spiritual classics—texts that explore the nature of the self, the universe, and ultimate reality. Easwaran’s accessible translation makes these profound ideas approachable without losing their poetic essence. BEYOND CAPES AND ACTION: Teja Sajja ON THE HEART OF MIRAI
Teja Sajja’s superhero spectacle Mirai has lit up cinemas with an overwhelming response from audiences. The fantasy adventure has been praised for its international-scale stunts and VFX while staying rooted in Telugu storytelling. In a candid telephonic conversation with Lipika Varma, Teja shared his journey, the challenges he faced, and his excitement about the film’s reception.
Produced by T. G. Vishwa Prasad, directed by Karthik Gattamneni, and presented in North India by Dharma Productions, Mirai also premiered in the US alongside its global release. The film stars Manchu Manoj, Ritika Nayak, Shriya Saran, and Jagapathi Babu, further adding to its star power.
On making a Telugu film with Telugu sensibilities and getting an open-armed reception with Hindi film-goers-
I have never imagined, even in my wildest dreams, that I would be standing in a Hindi cinema. But I am happy from the bottom of my heart that they have welcomed me with their open arms. I feel very responsible for delivering something that gives them an experience in the auditorium yet again, and this is reflected in the choice of films I've selected as well. I take other languages very seriously, which encourages me. We are promoting it as a mainstream Hindi film because we see a lot of love and potential in it. However, predominantly, I am not trying to get into the Hindi film industry. I'm making a Telugu film with Telugu sensibilities, and the subject matter is relevant in other languages as well. If audiences are interested in coming to watch it in theatres, as a respect, we put in full effort to make everything needed to make the film look authentic in that language.

On discipline and commitment to films-
Yes, this film was tough to make, and it needed utmost attention. It is my discipline and my work ethic that force me to be committed to every film. I don't put timelines on the makers to complete the film. I'm doing it as a job; it's not for money. It's my passion. That is why I have given my 110% for this film. I feel it's my responsibility that there are lakhs of people trying to get this opportunity. When I get this kind of opportunity, I make sure to go to any extent in my capacity, whether before or after release.

On leaving no stone unturned for promotional activities-
It’s been a Herculean task to try to cater to all of India in just 10 days. I’ve been on the road for almost 20 days now, Bangalore, Chennai, Mumbai, soon Dubai, Cochin, Varanasi, Delhi, and then the US for the premiere. Even when I was hospitalised with the flu, nothing stopped me from giving my best in promoting my film.
On comparisons between Mirai and HanuManI don't compare myself to any film and don't attribute any success to myself. It's a team effort, and 100 different things contribute to any success getting into my head. I know, I will always have to put the same effort as a newcomer in every film. With Mirai, the budget was limited, but our dreams weren’t. We pushed boundaries—whether it was doing real stunts on trains or maximising VFX. We wanted it to look international, even on a restrained budget. When the VFX cost was exorbitant, we did all Octane actions. We wanted the film to look extraordinary. I was hanging and running on the real train, which usually duplicates do or they do it on a green screen. We went all out to make the most of our limited budget.
On Karan Johar backing Mirai in the NorthDefinitely, I'm an outsider not only in Bollywood but also in Tollywood. However, I am incredibly thankful to Karan sir, who allowed me to reach a wider audience. He was pleasantly surprised by our achievements with that limited budget. He felt that his name should be included so that it reaches a broader audience. I
don't know him personally, nor do I have connections. I hope this film works for Karan sir also, so that my association with him goes a long way from here. With Karan sir's backing, I will deliver my best.
On being Karan Johar’s ‘Blue-Eyed boy’I'm ready...you should ask him! Of course, who wouldn't want to be Karan Sir's blue-eyed boy? I would like him to make a straight film in Telugu. Though everybody has watched his movies in Hindi, it will be something new and fresh for Telugu audiences to watch.
"Who wouldn't want to be Karan sir's blue-eyed boy."
