From the E DITOR

If you give me a choice between gold, jewellery, designer bags and travel — travel it will always be. Even if you give me a choice between working harder to make more money or packing my bags for the next trip, I’ll pick travel every single time. I’ve been to 48 countries so far, and yet my list keeps growing. There’s just something magical about discovering a new place — the smells, the sounds, the faces, the food — it reminds me how alive I really am.

magical world while we still can.
Life is meant to be experienced — not survived. Let’s make our present count, live with no regrets, and fill our hearts with stories instead of things.
Here’s to new places, new people, and new perspectives.
Happy November — and happy wandering...
Let’s Live, Not Just Exist Sinduri Vuppala
We take life far too seriously. We get stuck in our routines, our jobs, our bubbles, and forget there’s a whole world out there waiting to be seen. Taking off on a holiday is not just therapeutic; it’s an awakening. You realise how vast the world is and how small we really are — just a speck of nothing in this big, beautiful universe.
Recently, I had the liberty to take close to three weeks off to see Mount Everest — something that was on my 81-year-old aunt’s bucket list. Our family, spread across eight cities and countries, decided to join her, and what an experience it turned out to be! We passed through many Tibetan villages, where Indians were never seen before. They looked at us like aliens — curious, smiling, taking pictures and selfies. The children waved at us everywhere we went, and I’ve never received so many compliments in my life — apparently, they loved my big eyes!
At those heights, oxygen is a luxury. We had to buy oxygen masks, pumps, and even the rooms had built-in oxygen support. Every day felt like a test — but also an achievement. It was humbling, surreal, and unforgettable.
That trip reminded me of something we all tend to forget — when we die, we take nothing with us. Not our possessions, not our bank balance, not our fancy bags or cars. So why postpone happiness? Why wait for the “right” time to live? Let’s do it now. Let’s travel, explore, feel, and see this

LOVE, LEARNING, LIFE BEYOND LABELS Siddhu Jonnalagadda on &

With Telusu Kada currently running in theatres, Siddhu Jonnalagadda steps into new territory as a romantic lead, breaking away from his much-loved Tillu image. The romantic drama shows him as Varun — a man caught in the web of emotions, relationships, family ties, and the search for his own identity. Directed by debutant Neeraja Kona and featuring Raashii Khanna and Srinidhi Shetty as the leading ladies, the film marks a refreshing shift for Siddhu. In a candid chat with Priyanka Goud, he opens up about shedding stereotypes, navigating success and failure, and staying deeply rooted in his craft.

On receiving mixed responses for his role in Telusu Kada
I’m glad that Telusu Kada is doing well. It’s my first time playing a full-fledged romantic hero, and there’s been a lot of talk about my role. Like you said, I did come across a few people calling my character a ‘walking red flag.’ But honestly, I don’t really look at that whole ‘red flag’ part. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and that’s

absolutely fine. For us, it was never about labelling the character — we just wanted to portray him truthfully, with all his layers and flaws, and we went with that.
On working with a debutant female director
I never looked at it as working with a woman filmmaker or compared it to working with a male director. For me, she was simply my director — that’s all that mattered. The thought of gender never even crossed my mind. Neeraja has always been very clear, confident, and straightforward about how she wanted things to be delivered. We share a great rapport, and I believe that chemistry translated beautifully on screen. I was also involved in the creative process as a writer — Neeraja genuinely valued my inputs and often took my suggestions, especially when it came to the humour or some of the radical thought processes the character had. We’d sit together, discuss, and figure things out as a team.
On women's power and memorable moments from the sets
Telusu Kada was very much about women's power — it had three incredible women at its core: Neeraja Kona, and the two leading ladies, Raashi Khanna, and Srinidhi Shetty, who made her Telugu debut. Every day on set was engaging and energetic; we genuinely had a lot of fun working together. One of my most memorable moments from the shoot was watching how people around me reacted to the way I delivered my dialogues or performed specific actions — those reactions stayed with me.
On shedding the image of Tillu and connecting with audiences
Compared to the comedy in the Tillu franchise, doing romance was actually quite challenging for me. I was aware of the other sides and dimensions of my work as an actor, and this film felt like an excellent opportunity to explore and showcase them. Of course, Tillu’s image had become so strongly etched in people’s minds, and I knew it would be challenging to step out of that and create another impression that’s just as impactful. But I didn’t let that pressure get to me, because I truly believe it all comes down to the writing. Just like Tillu was a brilliantly written character, I knew that another well-written role could do the same for me. Telusu Kada proved that — it made people stop seeing me only as Tillu and realise that there’s much more I can offer as an actor.
On dealing with success and failure
As an artist and a writer, I feel everything that happens in my life finds its way into my creative space. Whether it’s a high or a low, I channel it through my art and cinema. After Jack’s failure, I started to take everything with a pinch of salt — each experience helps me understand the world and the business a little better. I genuinely believe that everything in life is a learning, and for me, the best way to process and express those emotions is through my art, my writing, and my craft.

Compared to the comedy in the Tillu franchise, doing romance was actually quite challenging for me. I was aware of the other sides and dimensions of my work as an actor, and this film felt like an excellent opportunity to explore and showcase them.

On connecting with audiences through his uniqueness
I believe my dialect and body language have been tremendous assets in helping me connect with the audience. What you see on screen — whether it’s Tillu Square, Krishna and His Leela, Jack, or Telusu Kada — there’s always a bit of Siddhu in each of them. I feel every time you play a character; you have to meet the role halfway. There’s a lot of culture in me — and by that, I mean a strong sense of nativity and rootedness. I think that very essence, that cultural connection, is what resonates with people.
On his journey from side artist to leading hero
From doing side roles in films like Josh and Orange to playing the lead in Life Before Wedding, and now to where I am today, the one thing that has kept me going is perseverance and patience. Coming from a non-filmy background and staying consistent in this industry hasn’t been easy. But I’ve always been very stubborn that way — if I want something, I have to go after it until I get it. My parents have been my biggest supporters throughout; they’ve always encouraged me to dream big.
On keeping his personal life private It’s a very conscious decision for me to keep my personal life private and use social media purely for work. I understand that, as a public figure, people are naturally curious to know more about my life, but that’s just how I am. I’ve always believed that audiences should know me through my work. There are certain things I choose not to share, and that’s a personal choice I deeply value.

? Which Home Services App Truly Simplifies Your Life
For decades, the foundation of a comfortable home relied on a Rolodex full of scattered contacts. The temperamental electrician, the hard-to-schedule parlour lady, and the elusive plumber. Today, that chaotic system has been replaced by a single, elegant solution: the Home Services App. But with a growing market, which app reigns supreme for your specific needs? Dhanush Kumar conducts a meticulous deep dive into the four major players—Urban Company, Yes Madam, Broomies, and Hit A Cook — to help you master the modern, hassle-free home.

Urban Company Yes Madam
If you are looking for an all-in-one solution, Urban Company is the dominant market leader and the go-to platform.
The app operates on a fixed price service model for most categories. You select a service, for example: AC Repair or Deep Cleaning. Choose specific tasks within that category, select your time slot, and the app instantly provides the final, non-negotiable price. A verified professional is then assigned to your job.
Core Services Offered:
• Home Repairs & Maintenance: Electricians, Plumbers, Carpenters, AC Servicing & Repair, Geyser Repair.
• Cleaning & Pest Control: Deep Home Cleaning, Sofa/Carpet Cleaning, Pest Control.
• Beauty & Wellness: Salon at Home (for men and women), Massage Therapy.
• Others: Appliance Repair (Washing Machine, Refrigerator, etc.).
Yes Madam has risen as a strong competitor, particularly in the beauty and wellness space, focusing on cost-effectiveness and a unique product-transparency model.
The app’s core difference from UC lies in its product transparency. For beauty and salon services, they charge only for the service and allow customers to keep any unused product from the single-use kits. You book your service, choose your time, and the professional arrives with the sealed, pre-packaged kits.
Core Services Offered:
• Beauty & Wellness: Salon at Home (Waxing, Manicure, Pedicure, Facial, Hair Spa), Makeup Artists.
• Men’s Grooming: Haircut and Shave services.
• Massage: Full-body massages at home.

While less diversified than UC, Broomees focuses on recurring, fundamental household cleaning needs, and regular staffing.
Broomees often focus on a subscription or regular service model for recurring help, rather than oneoff, large-scale repairs. You typically hire for a cleaning package or to book a specific domestic helper on a contractual basis.
Core Services Offered:
• Housekeeping & Maid Services: Daily, weekly, or deep cleaning.
• Domestic Help: Hiring of cooks, nannies, or fulltime domestic help (depending on the region).

The newest wave of home services is hyperspecialized, and Hit A Cook is the leader in solving the perennial problem of everyday cooking.
This is a pure-play service platform for finding and hiring professional cooks for your home. You can book a cook on a temporary or a permanent basis. The professional comes to your home, uses your groceries, and prepares meals tailored to your needs (daily cooking, party catering, etc).
Core Services Offered:
• Daily Meal Cook: Hiring a cook for breakfast, lunch, and dinner preparation.
• Party & Event Cook: Cooks hired for a single event or small gathering.
• Cuisine Specialization: Access to cooks specializing in regional Indian, Continental, or specific dietary meals.

Power Dressing 2025
How Women Can Own Formal Wear with Confidence
Power dressing is no longer about boxy blazers and stiff formals—it’s about striking a balance between authority and style. Today’s formal wear for women reflects individuality, inclusivity, and modern flair, making it perfect for boardrooms, networking events, and even hybrid workspaces. The key? Dressing smart while staying authentic.
The New Rules of Power Dressing

• Fit is Everything: Tailored Silhouettes are back. Invest in well-fitted trousers, blazers, and dresses that complement your body type.

• Monochrome Magic: Neutral palettes (beige, cream, navy, black) remain timeless, but bold single-tones like emerald, cobalt, or burgundy are trending.

• Comfort with Structure: Think stretch fabrics, breathable cotton-blends, and soft linen with sharp cuts—robust yet wearable.

Key Trends in Women’s Formal Wear
• Statement Shirts:
Oversized yet structured blazers paired
Ruffles, asymmetrical collars, or tie-up necklines that add flair without being loud.
• Wide-Leg Trousers:
High-waisted, floor-grazing trousers elongate the frame while exuding confidence.

• Skirt Suits:
Pair pencil skirts and A-line midi skirts with blazers for a feminine twist.
• Minimalist Accessories:
Sleek belts, layered chains, or geometric earrings that enhance but don’t overpower.
How to Wear Formal Wear Right
• Balance Masculine & Feminine: Pair a strong-shouldered blazer with soft silk blouses or delicate heels.
• Invest in Classics: A crisp white shirt, tailored black trousers, and a navy blazer form the foundation of a classic power look.
• Shoes Matter: Block heels, loafers, or pointed-toe flats— comfort without compromise.
• Play with Prints (Sparingly): Pinstripes, houndstooth, or checks add character while maintaining a professional look.

Accessories & Grooming for the Win

• A structured handbag or tote keeps things polished.
• Watches remain the ultimate power accessory.
• Groomed hair (sleek buns, soft waves) and neutraltoned makeup complete the look.

of the
LAKMĒ FASHION WEEK 2025
Designer : Anam Hussain
Label: Anam Hussain
Collection: Cut-Putly
Inspired by Rajasthan’s Kathputlis — the puppets that dance between control and liberation — Anam Hussain’s Cut-Putly examines power, agency, and freedom through geometry and form. Structured, angular silhouettes represent restraint, while oversized shapes express release and individuality. The collection’s strength lies in its sustainability: over 1,000 kilograms of post-consumer denim waste was transformed through patchwork, crocheting, and hand-weaving into sculptural garments that balance grit with grace.
For Hussain, waste isn’t discarded matter — it’s creative potential. With hints of crochet handbags and accessories in development, Cut-Putly sets the tone for a label that is as thoughtful as it is experimental.

Designer : Mohammed Anas Sheikh
Label: 23°N 69°E
Collection: Unnamed (Kachchh-Inspired)

Mohammed Anas Sheikh’s collection celebrates Kachchh’s artisanal spirit — weaving its heritage into modern silhouettes that exude quiet strength. Centered around Kala cotton, a rain-fed indigenous fibre, his pieces highlight broken Ajrakh block prints, mirror work embroidery, and hand-dyed hues of indigo, madder, soot, and off-white.
Sheikh’s designs embody imperfection as art. Each garment carries the imprint of time and the hand of its maker. “It’s not just about revival,” he notes, “it’s about ensuring the artisans behind the loom are seen, heard, and paid fairly.” His minimalist aesthetic allows the textiles to speak — transforming craft into narrative, and heritage into identity.

Designer : Pranita Choudhury
Label: Gaach
Collection: Recalling
Through her label Gaach, Pranita Choudhury transforms Rabindranath Tagore’s timeless poem Purono Sei Diner Kotha into an emotive textile experience. Her collection, Recalling, pays homage to memory and belonging — each garment a whisper from the past.
Working with natural silks like Eri, Chanderi, Pashmina, and linen, Choudhury employs eco-printing with dried leaves, kantha stitching, and Bengali script block prints to create a tactile sense of nostalgia. Muted hues of mustard, coral, sage, and blue evoke the patina of old photographs. Recalling is a tender reminder that memory, when woven into cloth, can become both art and archive.

Designer : Gaurav Jai Gupta
Label: Akaaro Collection: Starlight
In Starlight, Gaurav Jai Gupta of Akaaro celebrates the brilliance of silk through texture and tone. Known for his mastery of weave and structure, Gupta spent over a year developing textiles that push the boundaries of material innovation. He presented saris, jackets, and layered separates that celebrated pink and fuchsia in contemporary forms — modern yet rooted in artisanal authenticity.
Handwoven silks, khadi silks, cottons, and kinji weaves come alive in shades of pink, fuchsia, and metallics, merging modern form with artisanal depth. For Gupta, sustainability is not a passing trend but a philosophy of design. Starlight stands as an ode to India’s textile traditions — illuminated through contemporary craftsmanship that feels both timeless and new.

Designer : Amit Hansraj
Label: Inca
Collection: Autumn/Winter 2025
Amit Hansraj’s Inca is a meditation on rhythm — of stitches, weaves, and repetition. His Autumn/Winter 2025 collection fuses kantha, leheriya, and shibori techniques to create textural harmony. “These crafts are rooted in rhythm,” he explains. “We’ve used them not as motifs but as languages — to build texture, layer, and dimension.”
The line features kantha-stitched jackets, leheriya-striped organza, and shiboridyed drapes, alongside brocade paired with raffia and printed animal motifs on tissue. On the runway, India’s iconic supermodels brought nostalgia and elegance to life. Hansraj’s Inca encapsulates modern Indian luxury: heritage worn lightly, designed for movement, and steeped in emotion.

Designer : Anurag Gupta
Label: Waves of Innovation Collection: An Ode to Hokusai
Blurring the line between art and engineering, Anurag Gupta’s An Ode to Hokusai draws inspiration from the iconic wave motifs of Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai. In partnership with IIT Delhi and Indigotex, Gupta developed Indiwool denim—a groundbreaking textile that combines locally sourced wool with a waterless finishing process using ECOTEX PLASMA technology.
“The process was a dialogue between design and science,” Gupta says. “The textile carries both rawness and precision, mirroring Hokusai’s energy.” The resulting garments — sculptural, fluid, and forward-thinking — embody the next phase of fashion innovation, where craft, material, and sustainability meet to form a new kind of artistry.

Anurag Gupta
Designer : Pankaj & Nidhi
Label: Pankaj & Nidhi Collection: Araquis
With Araquis, Pankaj & Nidhi reimagined eveningwear through a bold, maximalist lens. The collection transported the audience into a surreal, sci-fi desert realm ruled by warrior princesses — women who embody strength, sensuality, and selfpossession. Sculptural silhouettes, strong 1980s-inspired shoulders, and rich jewel tones of sapphire, amber, and onyx defined a visual language of modern regality.
Intricate appliqués, metallic embroideries, and layered textures shimmered under light like desert mirages — each piece a study in controlled opulence. “It’s about strength meeting fluidity — clothing that’s both powerful and poetic,” shares Pankaj. True to that philosophy, Araquis offered day-to-night adaptability — from precision-cut fitted dresses to dramatic embellished capes that transform with a simple shift in styling.
Bridging craftsmanship and contemporary technology, Pankaj & Nidhi continue to evolve their signature aesthetic: femininity not as fragility, but as a futuristic force — fierce, luminous, and untamed.

A futuristic ode to femininity — where power, precision, and poetic storytelling converge.

Fitness Snacks
That Fuel Without the Guilt
In today’s fast-paced world, we often find ourselves reaching for convenient snacks that are quick but not necessarily healthy. However, snacking doesn’t have to be detrimental to your fitness goals. The right snacks can provide essential nutrients, promote recovery, and keep you energised throughout the day. The key is choosing nutrient-dense foods that fuel your body, improve performance, and satisfy your cravings without the guilt.
Hashtag Magazine covers some of the best fitness snacks, their benefits, and a delicious recipe to try!

Sacred Plants We Cherish in Indian Cultures and Homes

The Peepal
Few trees command as much reverence as the majestic Peepal, also known as the Bodhi Tree. It is believed to be the abode of the Trimurti, Lord Brahma (The roots), Lord Vishnu (in the Trunk), and Lord Shiva (in the leaves), Gautama Buddha attained enlightenment under this very species. Devotees perform parikrama and offer water, often tying sacred threats to seek blessings for longevity and to mitigate planetary woes.
The Peepal is one of the few trees that releases oxygen both day and night, embodying its sacred association with the life-giving force.
While the ubiquitous Tulsi often takes center stage, a closer look reveals a whole ecosystem of sacred plants, each with a profound story, a religious connection, and a practical use woven into the daily lives of millions. Dhanush Kumar writes about the six green deities that hold an irreplaceable spot in the Indian spiritual and cultural landscape
Tulsi
The Holy Basil, or Tulsi, is arguably the most essential plant in a Hindu Household. It is traditionally grown on a special pedestal, the Tulsi Vrindavan, in the central courtyard. Tulsi is considered an earthly manifestation of the Goddess Lakshmi, the consort of Lord Vishnu. No worship of Vishnu or Krishna is complete without a Tulsi leaf. The plant is worshipped daily, especially by women, and the annual festival of Tulsi Vivah celebrates her ceremonial marriage to Lord Vishnu. It is also known as the Queen of Herbs, its leaves are a staple in Ayurvedic medicine for treating colds, coughs, and boosting immunity.

The Bael
The Bael or Wood Apple tree holds a profound, singular connection to Lord Shiva. Its distinctive trifoliate leaves are considered a representation of the Trinetra of Lord Shiva. Offering Bael Leaves is an essential act of devotion. During the festival of Maha Shivaratri, Bael leaves are an indispensable offering to the Shiva Linga, symbolizing purification and the removal of sins.
The Bael fruit, pulp and leaves are highly valued in Ayurveda for their benefits, particularly for digestive health, linking physical health to spiritual practice.
The Banyan
The Banyan is an emblem of immortality and resilience, serving as India’s National Tree. With its ever-expanding canopy and aerial roots, it symbolizes eternal life and the divine creator, Brahma. It is often compared to the mythological Kalpavriksha, the wish-fulfilling tree. The Banyan is central to the festival of Vat Savitri Vrat, where married women fast, and pray for the longevity of their husbands.
It is revered as the Ashwatha Vriksha (Tree of wisdom) and traditionally served as the natural gathering place for community and learning.

Lotus
While not a household plant in the same way, the Lotus is a vital symbol in Indian art, mythology, and worship. The Lotus symbolizes purity, spiritual awakening, and detachment, as it grows from the mud but remains spotless and untouched. Goddess Lakshmi, and Goddess Sarswati are often depicted seated upon or holding a lotus. The flower is used in almost all rituals, and its iconography is central to Yoga, where the Padmasana is a fundamental posture for meditation.
It represents the birth of the Universe, emerging from the navel of Lord Vishnu.
Neem
The humble but powerful Neem tree is celebrated as much for its life-saving properties as its spiritual connection. Neem is often associated with the goddess Sitala Mata, the deity of health and protection from illness. Neem branches are hung over doorways during festivals like Ugadi to ward off sickness. The tree is also integral to various purification rituals.
Nearly every part of the Neem tree is used in traditional medicine, as an anti-fungal, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory agent, earning it the name Nature’s Pharmacy.

Quick Travel Q&A with Aarya Voraa
What type of traveller are you — planner or spontaneous explorer?
I’m mostly a planner, but sometimes I let spontaneity take the wheel — especially when something unexpected calls out to me.
One destination that completely surprised you?
Kosovo! It’s such an underrated gem — warm people, vibrant cafés, beautiful mountains, and a deep sense of history. It felt so safe and welcoming, small but full of soul.
How do you choose your next destination?
I look for culture and character — places that offer stories, adventure, and meaningful connections with locals. Every destination I pick must feel authentic.
Which country or city has had the most impact on you and why?
Luxembourg amazed me! It’s the first country in the world to offer free public transport for everyone — a reflection of how much they value sustainability and accessibility. Despite its size, Luxembourg blends modernity, nature, and innovation so seamlessly that it stays with you long after you leave.
How do you balance content creation with enjoying the experience itself?
I focus on capturing a place's essence, not perfection. I plan a few key shots but mostly live in the moment — tasting, exploring, feeling. Authenticity always connects more than a curated frame.

Quick Travel Q&A with Roop Verma
What inspired you to start traveling and sharing online?
My curiosity. I’ve always wanted to see the world through my own eyes — and then I realized that sharing those moments makes them even more powerful. I love it when someone messages me saying, ‘Wait, what? I need to go there too!’ I live for that spark.
Are you a planner or a spontaneous explorer?
Both, in the best way. I plan enough to survive — but the real magic happens when I wander off the map and find something unexpected.
One destination that pleasantly surprised you?
Japan. It hit me with beauty, strangeness, and emotions I didn’t even know I had. I still think about it every single day.
How do you choose your next destination?

One travel essential you never leave home without?
My camera, always. But also, a little notebook — because not every moment fits into a photo. Some need words, scribbled before they disappear.

Quick Travel Q&A with Sheena Chohan
What inspired you to start travelling and sharing online?
Travel, for me, is both a personal joy and a professional journey. From my debut in Kerala to films shot in Bengal and Maharashtra, each destination has deepened my perspective and inspired my craft. Travel nourishes creativity and empathy — it’s a living classroom for the soul.
Are you a planner or a spontaneous explorer?
I believe in both. Work requires structure, but I leave space for serendipity. During my Tagore films in Shantiniketan, I’d often wander into old lanes and heritage homes — those unplanned discoveries became the heart of my memories.
How do you choose your next destination?
My shoots often guide my travels, but I always make time to experience the soul of each place — its people, food, and traditions. Every project becomes an opportunity to travel deeper into India’s cultural and emotional landscapes.
Travel Essentials
My camera, comfortable shoes, and a small journal. I’m always observing — gestures, emotions, faces — and those details often inspire the characters I play. Travel is my greatest teacher.

EXOTIC PETS IN INDIA:
A Status Symbol or a Silent Suffering?
In major Indian cities, owning a rare reptile, a colourful macaw, or a unique primate has become the ultimate status symbol. Driven by Social media fascination and rising disposable incomes, the demand for exotic pets is booming. But behind the flashy cages and captivating photos lies a dark, ethically complex trade that wildlife experts overwhelmingly condemn. The question is stark: Is the rising trend of exotic pet ownership in India ethical, or is it a hidden crisis for animal welfare and conservation?
The Crisis of Captivity: An Ethical Failure
Unlike domesticated animals like cats and dogs that have been selectively bred over millennia to thrive in human homes, exotic animals are fundamentally wild. They retain complex instincts, behavioural needs, and spatial requirements that a typical home environment can rarely meet.

Welfare and Psychological Trauma

The primary ethical concern centres on the suffering these animals endure.
• Inadequate Care: Wild animals require precise conditions, specific humidity, temperature controls, vast spaces, and complex, natural diets. When these needs are unmet in a small enclosure, the result is profound psychological distress.

• Behavioural Stereotypies: Experts point to stress-included behaviours like pacing, self-harm, or anxiety as common indicators of suffering in captivity. As one expert noted ‘The complex behavioural, intellectual, nutritional, and psychological needs of the wild animals are seldom met in captive conditions in homes or pet markets. In short, wild animals aren’t meant to be kept as pets.

Fuelling the Illegal Wildlife Trade
A significant portion of the exotic pet trade operates outside the law, contributing to a global criminal network.
• The Deadly Journey: Animals are often poached from the wild, smuggled in horrific conditions, crammed into small boxes, socks, or luggage without food or water. The mortality rate during transit is shockingly high. For every animal that survives to become a pet, many more die.
• Conservation Threat: Removing species like the Indian Star Tortoise or exotic parrots from their natural habitats pushes them closer to extinction. Poaching for pet trade has a devastating impact on global biodiversity.

The Invasive Species Danger
When exotic pets are released, either accidentally or deliberately by owners who can no longer handle them, they threaten local ecosystems.
• Ecological Havoc: If a foreign species establishes itself in the Indian wild, it can outcompete native animals for food, prey on local fauna, and cause irreversible damage to the ecological balance.

Zoonotic Disease Risk
Wild animals naturally carry pathogens that can easily jump to humans, creating a risk for zoonotic diseases.
• Health Threats: Diseases like Salmonella (from exotic turtles) or the Herpes B Virus are real threats when these animals are kept in close human proximity. Stressed animals, often housed in unsanitary conditions during trade, shed these pathogens more easily.

Legal Landscape and Expert Opinion
India’s legal framework has evolved to address this crisis. While the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 strictly bans the possession of native Indian wildlife, the rules governing exotic species have recently been tightened.
The government introduced the Living Animal Species Rules, 2024, under the Wildlife Protection Act. This mandates that individuals possessing certain exotic animals must register them with the Chief Wildlife Warden to comply with international treaties like CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora)
Despite these laws, experts believe the most powerful deterrent is public morality and awareness.
Sumanth Bindumadhav, Senior Manager for Wildlife at Humane Society International/India, emphasized the health risks: ‘Exotic animals are currently imported or bred in captivity and often housed in conditions that induce stress. Animals under duress are known to shed more pathogens than otherwise. This, combined with the fact that multiple species are housed together, in close proximity, is a disaster waiting to happen.
Another animal welfare organization starkly advises prospective owners:
“Animals aren’t status symbols; they deserve a home where they can thrive. Exotic pets may look impressive, but they are often difficult to care for and come with legal and ethical concerns.”
The true test of a society’s moral progress is how it treats its most vulnerable, including wild creatures. The desire for a unique, Instagramworthy pet cannot ethically outweigh an animal's right to its natural habitat, proper care, and freedom from a global criminal trade.
If the fascination with exotic animals is born out of genuine love, that love should translate into conservation support, not consumption. The only truly ethical choice is to leave the wild in the wild.

BOOK TO SCREEN MAGIC
THE 5 MOST SPECTACULAR ADAPTATIONS THAT REDEFINED STORYTELLING
There’s something magical about watching beloved characters leap from pages to pixels, transforming the theatre of our imagination into a shared visual experience. While the debate over the book rages on, certain adaptations transcend comparison. They become masterpieces in their own right, honouring the source material while embracing the unique possibilities of cinema and television. Dhanush Kumar writes about six adaptations that didn’t just meet expectations; they soared beyond them.
The Rings Trilogy

Stephen King’s novella Shawshank Redemption was already a powerful tale of hope and friendship. Frank Darabont’s adaptation transformed into what many consider the greatest film ever made, a title it has held on IMDb’s Top 250 for years.
The film expands on King’s lean narrative, giving depth to the relationship between Andy and Red, two prisoners who find redemption in the most unlikely place. What elevates this adaptation is its patience. The famous rooftop scene, Adny’s opera moment, and that glorious finale on the Pacific Coast aren’t just cinematic moments; they are emotional moments that understand the assignment. Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things.
When Peter Jackson announced his ambitious plan to adapt J.R.R. Tolkien’s sprawling epic, sceptics predicted disaster. How could anyone compress Middle-earth’s intricate world-building, complex languages, and philosophical depth into film? The answer was simple: by treating the source material with reverence while understanding cinema’s different language.
Jackson’s trilogy became more than an adaptation; it became a cultural phenomenon that introduced Tolkien’s work to millions who might never have picked up the books. The films captured the essence of friendship, sacrifice, and the corrupting nature of power that made the novels timeless.
What makes this adaptation brilliant is its ability to capture the soul of the work. Two decades later, these films remain the benchmark against which all fantasy adaptations are measured.

1. The Lord Of
2. The Shawshank Redemption
3. Harry Potter Film Series

Margaret Atwood’s 1985 novel felt like prophecy when Hulu adapted it in 2017. The adaptation’s genius lies in its visual storytelling. The oppressive reds of the Handmaid’s robes, the clinical whites of the Wives, and the suffocating architecture of Gilead create a color-coded nightmare that needs no explanation. Elisabeth Moss’s performance as Offred gives voice to the internal monologue that made Atwood’s novel so powerful.
What makes this adaptation remarkable is its willingness to go beyond the source material while maintaining Atwood’s thematic integrity. The series explores questions Atwood posed and then pushes further, examining resistance and the long shadow of trauma in ways that feel both faithful and freshly relevant.
When Warner Bros. acquired the rights to J.K. Rowling’s Phenomenon, the stakes couldn’t have been higher. Millions of children and adults had already fallen in love with the Boy who Lived, and expectations were astronomical. What followed was an eightfilm journey that became a defining cultural touchstone for an entire generation.
The series’ greatest triumph was its casting of Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint, who grew up on screen. But it was the supporting cast that elevated these films into something extraordinary — Alan Rickman’s Severus Snape and Maggie Smith’s McGonagall brought charm to the magical world.

5. The Queen’s Gambit

Walter Tevis's 1983 novel about a chess prodigy battling addiction was largely forgotten until Netflix's 2020 adaptation became a cultural phenomenon. The limited series format was perfect for this character-driven story, allowing each episode to function as a carefully crafted chapter in Beth Harmon's journey.
Anya Taylor-Joy's magnetic performance anchors the series, but it's the visual storytelling that elevates it. Director Scott Frank transforms chess matches into thrilling sequences that convey the game's beauty without requiring you to know how the pieces move.
The adaptation succeeds because it understands that Beth's story isn't really about chess—it's about genius, loneliness, addiction, and the families we choose. It expanded the emotional resonance of Tevis's novel while maintaining its core.
