Dear reader, The holidays are almost over and I hope you have all been able to get some well-deserved rest!

Luckily, you can still enjoy some sunny days and the introduction week is coming up, which means you can give your vacation a worthy goodbye.

However, there is a chance you have not experienced what it is like to study Mechanical Engineering at the Eindhoven University of Technology yet, since you are just about to begin. In that case, I would like to sincerely welcome you and congratulate you on making such a good decision. During the introduction week you can experience everything Eindhoven has to offer you as a student and hopefully you can find something to do besides your study that suits you perfectly. Maybe try something different and give yourself that new and fresh start!

Unfortunately, this is already the last edition of the 49th year of the Simon Ster. As you may suggest, next year the magazine of our association will reach a milestone with the memorable age of 50 years. In 50 years, the magazine has changed a lot, together with the rest of the Association. Although I like to read about how the first Simon Ster was created or the origins of De Weeghconst, the most memorable year for me will always be the last one; the 61st Association year and the 49th Simon Ster year.

In this vigorous year, W.S.V. Simon Stevin has again grown and thrived with all the members who make the association as it is. We have seen a lot of new enthusiastic faces, interesting lectures and unforgettable nights and I am sure the new board will try just as hard to make next year as memorable as last year.

Since this is my last edition, someone has to take over my tasks in the 50th­ year of the Simon Ster.

Who, you ask? I am proud to announce that Maartje Borst will be the Editor-in-Chief next year and she will surely give the Simon Ster a whole new twist; beginning with an online platform and a paper version two times a year. That surely does sound promising. I wish her all the best for next year.

Sense and nonsense in technogoly

The Koenigsegg Regera Let us take a look at the latest car developed by the Swedish highperformance car fabricant Koenigsegg, the Regera. This car is famous for the fact that it has no gear box, just one final ratio of 2.73 between the engine and the rear axle. The car holds records for having the highest speed for a production vehicle (447 km/h) and for accelerating from 0 to 400 km/h in 33.29 seconds, amongst other things. The Regera is a hybrid with three electric motors. Two at each rear wheel, allowing torque vectoring, and one on the crank, which can charge the 800 Volt battery and is the starter for the engine. The ICE (5 liter V8) kicks in at around 50 km/h, so at low speed the car is only driven by the electric motors.

Alcohol Watch

A crucial part of the drivetrain is the torque converter. The car can accelerate really fast, despite the fact that it is always in the equivalent of seventh gear. This means that the converter has a much tougher job than standard ones. Koenigsegg has built a state of the art torque converter that makes it acceptable to be in such a high gear at a low RPM. The differences with standard converters are the weight and bade design, amongst other things. Other advantages of not having a gearbox are weight reduction and improvement in efficiency, since there is always wear between gears.

You might find it difficult to estimate your alcohol level during a night out. Luckily, there is a solution for this problem in the making. A new kind of wristband is being developed for this. It can measure the amount of alcohol in your body. The wristband converts alcohol molecules in the sweat of your skin to an electric current. The information that is gathered from your skin is then sent to an app on your phone. This way, you can keep track of how much you have had to drink all the time, if you really want to. It also estimates at what time you will sober up again. Another feature of the system is that you can keep track others wearing the same kind of wristband. This allows you to keep track of the current state of drunkenness of your friends too.. should be interesting.

Bitcoins and Blockchains By now, I am sure many of you have heard of online currencies like Bitcoin. But what exactly do you know about the technology that is at the core of digital currencies? This concept for storing data is called blockchain and it has many potential applications in lots of different fields. Let us take a look at how blockchain works by using the Bitcoin system as an example.

Bitcoin is a digital ledger that lists accounts and money, just like a bank does. A digital copy of the ledger is maintained by every computer (also called a node) on the network. When you make a transaction you broadcast it to the network. Subsequently, all nodes apply your transaction to their copy of the ledger. The key difference with normal currencies is that this ledger is not being managed by a central entity like a bank, but by the community of all Bitcoin users. This does come with some challenges. You can trust your bank, or at least sue it if something goes wrong. But in Bitcoin, you cannot trust anyone. Luckily, the Bitcoin system is designed in a way that no trust is needed, using blockchain.

The main challenge is to insure that a transaction (also called a message) is legitimate. The solution for this is using digital signatures to prove the authenticity of a message. Every message requires a different signature. All nodes own a private- and a public key, which they can use to generate and check signatures. A signature is generated from the message and a private key. Other nodes can then use that signature to verify that it corresponds with your public key. So others are able to verify that you own a private key, without seeing your private key. Also, no one can modify a message because a change would invalidate the signature (because the signature is dependent on the message).

Messages are stored in so called blocks and the blocks are linked in a chain. Every block contains a unique code (a hash) which is dependent on the content of the block, and the hash of the previous block. When you tamper with a block, the hash of the block changes. Consequently, the following block contains an invalid reference to the previous block and now all following blocks are invalid. The only way to tamper with a block is to recalculate all the hashes of the other blocks to make the chain valid again.

However, this is made nearly impossible by the use of some cool math.

In short, this is how the safety of the data is insured. Some other applications of blockchain could be digital voting, online storage, smart contracts and personal identification. This concept promises a lot and the world is curious about what applications we will be seeing in the near future.

Radar technology in watches and speakers A relatively new project group from Google is looking into the application of radar technology for devices like speakers and watches. The idea is to track the movement of your hand with radar technology, and then converting your movement to command, for example tuning the volume of your speaker. This means you can control a device by making a twitch with your hand. You basically only have to do the same motion you do when operating a volume knob or a physical slider. The only difference is that the volume knob and the slider are not physically there.

Radar is an appropriate technology for this, because it has high positional accuracy and the radar can be embedded in a small chip that you can put in your device.

Welcome to W.S.V. Simon Stevin!

A quick word of the Chairman

If you read this article you have just made one of the best decisions of your life. You chose to study Mechanical Engineering at the Eindhoven University of Technology! You will probably hear this more often during the upcoming period, but studying in Eindhoven means a lot more than just reading books and doing experiments. For example, at your study association W.S.V. Simon Stevin, you will have the possibility to enrich yourself in one of the many committees there are. Prepare yourself for the upcoming period and be open to everything you see!

Sem James Most of you will start a really new life in Eindhoven. Living with your parents is replaced by living with roommates. Your house will probably not be as clean as it was when you were living with your parents. You will get to decide what to eat for dinner yourself and do your own laundry. Living on your own has some disadvantages but I recommend everyone to do this. It helps you developing yourself and getting the most out of your student time as possible.

Life at the TU/e campus is really different than in the outside world. It is kind of a separate island in Eindhoven, where you can find everything you need: the TU/e campus hosts restaurants, bars, supermarkets and even a hairdresser! Therefore, there is actually no urgent need to leave the campus, especially because renting a room at the TU/e campus is also possible! Of course, the choice for the bar to drink your beers on Thursday-afternoon is easy: De Weeghconst is the place to be!

Simon Stevin Our Association is called Werktuigkundige Studievereniging Simon Stevin (W.S.V. Simon Stevin). But who was Simon Stevin? It is the man that is seen as the first Mechanical Engineer ever. He combined mathematics and physics in order to create mechanical engineering.

Simon Stevin thought that everyone had to understand his science.

Therefore he translated many words to Dutch, he invented for example the words ‘wiskunde’ and ‘natuurkunde’. Simon Stevin is known for his introduction of decimal calculations, the thought that a perpetuum mobile does not exist and the proof that force is a vector.

The fact that force is a vector was proved by the ‘Clootcrans’-proof, also the logo of the Association.

Activities In the first weeks of the academic year, Simon Stevin organizes some events in which you can get to know Simon Stevin and each other in an unconditional and friendly way. Why Simon Stevin?

You are probably wondering: why do I want to be a member of Simon Stevin? At first because we also sell books. When being a member you are guaranteed that the books you buy are cheaper than anywhere else. Besides, Simon Stevin has good contact with the teachers of the faculty and therefore we can help you passing on your complaints or additions. There are multiple student councils and the board members are always present to help you if needed.

During the upcoming period you will discover that there is much more available for you than I can tell you in this short piece of text.

Feel free to come by in the Simonkamer for a free cup of coffee or lemonade! There is always someone present there to answer your questions or to just have a good conversation. An even more informal setting to ask your questions is in De Weeghconst during the Thursday drinks!

From this position I wish you all the best in your first weeks as a Mechanical Engineering student. I hope to see you at one of the many activities organized by our Association!

Land yachts

Simon Stevin is also very active in the area of career orientation. As mentioned, every Wednesday you can join a lunch lecture where a company presents itself. For only one euro you can join and you will even receive a luxurious lunch! Next to this, the many excursions, career courses and foreign trips are a nice way to discover what you can do after finishing your study.

Last but not least, Simon Stevin organizes many leisure activities.

Varying from sport events to a real ‘Deutsche Borrel’, there is something for everyone. Simon Stevin also has its own bar at the TU/e campus. Every Thursday at 16:00 the doors of faculty pub ‘De Weeghconst’ open for everyone who is interested. For student prices (beers for 80 cents and soda for 50 cents) everyone can recover from a week of hard work (or somewhat less hard work).

Something typical for Simon Stevin are the land yachts. A land yacht is a sailing boat on wheels. Around 1600, Simon Stevin built the first land yacht for Prince Maurits. The Association used this as an inspiration to create an own fleet of land yachts, which consists of 8 land yachts at the moment. Around five times per year a group of Mechanical Engineering students travels to the coast to go land yachting. Also for you there is the opportunity to join!

With over 25 committees and more than 200 activities every year, your association is one of the biggest in Eindhoven. You yourself can participate in one of the many committees and learn how to organise, work together and much more. But maybe most important of all, you get to know a lot of new people!

There are committees suitable for both Dutch and international students, so read down below which committee can make your first year complete!

Maartje Borst AcCie & ReAcCie & BattleCie De AcCie, ReacCie en BattleCie zijn de eerstejaarscommissies van de vereniging. De AcCie en ReacCie organiseren activiteiten die bedoeld zijn voor alle eerstejaars. Daarbij hebben ze de volledige vrijheid om zelf te bepalen wat de inhoud van deze activiteiten zijn. De BattleCie is een net iets andere commissie. Zij zullen een competitie organiseren tussen alle commissies van de W.S.V. Simon Stevin. Dus als je zin hebt om buiten je studie om lekker bezig te zijn met het organiseren van activiteiten, dan zijn deze commissies wellicht iets voor jou!

Student Councils To improve the quality of the study Mechanical Engineering it is important to proclaim your opinion. During the year several meetings will be planned to speak out about everything that is missing and wrong with courses. So if you find it interesting to improve the courses, then subscribe for the student council. Your help is needed!

Zeilwagencommissie De Zeilwagencommissie is een van de oudste en meest bijzondere commissies van onze studievereniging. Ongeveer vijf keer per jaar worden alle zeilwagens tevoorschijn gehaald om te gaan strandzeilen.

Gedurende deze activiteiten gaan er nog wel eens wat dingen kapot aan deze zeilwagens. De Zeilwagencommissie staat dan klaar om deze prachtige wagens weer te repareren tijdens de beunavonden. Dus hou je van met je handen bezig zijn met een heleboel gezelligheid, dan is deze commissie zeker voor jou weggelegd.

Editorial Committee The Simon Ster exists fifthy years the upcoming academic year. This is a fantastic anniversary to make Simon Ster very special. Next year, the Simon Ster will not only be on paper, but there will come an online platform for all kinds of articles. This won’t be possible without the help of the Redactie. So if you like to work with indesign, photoshop or writing articles, come and take a look and maybe your article will be published in the next Simon Ster.

MeisCie Het is algemeen bekend dat het percentage vrouwen bij de studie Werktuigbouwkunde laag is. Echter hebben de vrouwen binnen de vereniging een eigen plekje veroverd, namelijk de MeisCie. Een erg leuke en enthousiaste groep dames die activiteiten, zoals een dag naar de hamam, organiseren voor de rest van de dames van W. Om de mannen niet jaloers te maken, hebben zij toestemming om bij de laatste gemengde activiteit deel te nemen.

PaparaCie Door het jaar heen organiseert Simon Stevin veel activiteiten en dit moet natuurlijk allemaal op de gevoelige plaat vastgelegd worden. De PaparaCie is bij elke activiteit aanwezig om er zeker van te zijn dat er naderhand mooie plaatjes zijn van alles wat er tijdens de activiteiten gebeurt. Naast het maken van de foto’s is de commissie ook nog in de weer met het bewerken van de foto’s en video’s. Zo kunnen we jaren later nog terugkijken op al het moois wat Simon Stevin heeft georganiseerd.

Meer dan lassen en slijpen

Het beunen voor een echte werktuigbouwer is zoals bier voor een student, een stereotype wat de meesten maar al te graag waar maken. Echter wordt er al vrij snel geroepen dat iemand aan het beunen is, terwijl het in sommige gevallen om allesbehalve beunen gaat. Hoe doe je dat eigenlijk: beunen?

Sjors van Adrichem Als je in Eindhoven aan een student vertelt dat je een Werktuigbouwer bent, zullen ze je al snel als beunhaas of fietsenmaker zien. Dit is in de ogen van sommige studenten misschien een belediging, als W’er zou je er trots op moeten zijn.

Als ik zo om me heen kijk, valt het me echter vies tegen hoeveel mensen een band kunnen of zelfs durven verwisselen van hun fiets.

Het zou onze studie niet verkeerd staan als er meer beunhazen (en fietsenmakers) rond zouden lopen, zodat De Werf vaker gebruikt wordt waar die voor bedoeld is.

Beunhaas Volgens de definitie in het burgerwoordenboek is beunen het uitoefenen van een vak zonder daarvoor de juiste kennis en/of bevoegdheid te hebben. Als je op de bouwplaats uitgemaakt zou worden voor beunhaas door je collega-bouwvakkers, zal dat niet per se positief zijn. Mocht je echter in De Werf staan te beunen en een medestudent noemt je een beunhaas, dan kan je daar in de meeste gevallen best blij mee zijn.

Een echte beunhaas laat namelijk overkomen alsof hij precies weet wat hij aan het doen is, ook al is dat niet zo. Voor een lekkere beunsessie moet je namelijk niet te veel voorbereidingen treffen.

Je moet natuurlijk wel weten wat je wilt doen en met welke materialen, maar de details komen vanzelf wel. Met een paar schetsen of plaatje van het internet heb je al snel een voldoende duidelijk beeld van het beoogde ontwerp.

Gereedschap Een van de heerlijkheden van De Werf is de overvloed aan gereedschap, zo’n beetje al het handgereedschap ligt er wel. Nu hebben sommige W’ers dat thuis ook nog wel liggen, maar het elektrisch gereedschap is schaars onder de studenten. W’er zijnde hebben wij het geluk dat we de beschikking hebben over een lasapparaat, slijptol, cirkelzaag, enzovoort. Het is zonde om dan geen gebruik te maken van al dat moois.

Het gebruik van gereedschap is vanzelfsprekend. Iets slopen kan soms nog wel zonder, zoals fietsframefrommelen. Maar om iets in elkaar te zetten heb je bijna altijd gereedschap nodig. Dit hoeft

niet altijd lomp en zwaar gereedschap te zijn, het kan het wel leuker maken. Het gebruik van een moker is bijvoorbeeld niet per se nodig als je een standaard voor je laptop maakt, maar met een beetje vernuft komt er vanzelf een toepassing voor de moker.

Een beetje beunhaas weet welk gereedschap voor welke toepassing gebruikt kan worden. Dit hoeft niet per se de toepassing te zijn die de fabrikant in eerste instantie in gedachte had. Een bekend voorbeeld hiervan is het openen van een verfblik met behulp van een platte schroevendraaier. Tijdens het beunen kom je er vanzelf achter dat gereedschap vele toepassingen kan hebben. Zo kan alles wat maar een beetje massa heeft, gebruikt worden als hamer. Zeker als dat stuk gereedschap dichterbij ligt dan de hamer.

Om af te sluiten dient er natuurlijk een voorbeeld te komen, waaruit blijkt dat ik weet waar ik het over heb en dat ik niet zomaar wat op papier aan het zetten ben. Aan het eind van afgelopen collegejaar heeft er een oud-Zeilwagencommissarisuitje plaatsgevonden, waarbij er heftig gebeund is, zoals het hoort. De enige voorbereiding die er getroffen is, is het idee om een barbecue te beunen van een olievat. Dit idee was vooraf enkel bekend bij de Zeilwagencommissaris, die het uitje organiseerde.

Het olievat lag al enige tijd in De Werf met als doel een barbecue te worden en dat was het wel qua voorbereidingen.

Echter moet je wel je verstand gebruiken, anders kan je het gereedschap net zo makkelijk slopen. Eens in de zoveel tijd is er iemand die denkt dat je een kraspen ook wel als centerpons kan gebruiken, omdat ze op elkaar lijken. Dat is misschien wel mogelijk, maar als kraspen is die daarna niet meer te gebruiken.

Het juist inschatten waar gereedschap voor gebruikt kan worden, is een kwaliteit die een W-waardige beunhaas hoort te bezitten.

Projecten Beunen leer je niet vanuit een boek, je leert het door het te doen.

Van huis uit krijg je vaak al aangeleerd hoe je je fietsband moet plakken. Na een aantal plaksessies zal je toch een keer je band moeten vervangen, en een beetje W’er doet dat natuurlijk zelf. Als je de tijd hebt op dat moment, of in een sog zit, kan je je fiets net zo goed helemaal nakijken. Even je ketting smeren; het duurt maar even en moet toch een keer gebeuren. Daarna kan je eigenlijk ook wel de remmen schoonmaken, het zadel verstellen, de spaken spannen, de ketting strakker zetten, de handvatten vervangen, de batterijtjes van de lamp wisselen, enzovoort.

Je kunt zelf wel invullen wat er gebeurd als je de grootste beunhazen van de afgelopen zes jaar drie uur lang in De Werf zet: er werd gebeund alsof ons eten er vanaf hing. Iedereen begon aan zijn eigen deel te beunen en met geringe communicatie kwam alles perfect uit bij elkaar. De één sleep het vat open, de ander laste een rooster in elkaar, de volgende creëerde een vakwerkconstructiestaander, er werd een stevige rand gemaakt om de barbecue torsiestijf te maken en zo was er nog veel meer te beunen. Het grootste probleem dat je oploopt in De Werf als er veel en hard gebeund wordt, is dat we slechts één lasapparaat en slijptol hebben. De voorliefde voor staal gooide nu dus juist roe(s) t in het eten. Als Werktuigbouwer verzin je daar een oplossing voor: je gaat gewoon wat anders beunen tot het lasapparaat vrij is. Of kijken naar iemand die aan het lassen is, dat kan zelfs best ontspannend zijn.

Ik kan het iedereen aanraden om ieder geval eens naar De Werf of een andere werkplaats te gaan en je handen vies te maken. Zo gek is het nog niet en het is weer eens wat anders dan zuipen of series kijken. Dus zoek die uitlaatklep in het beunen, dan komt de innerlijke beunhaas vanzelf naar boven en merk je hoe handig het is dat je zelf dingen kunt maken.

Student teams

Team up for the future!

The TU/e is home to a lot of different associations and teams for students to enjoy themselves, to play sports together and/or to get more experience in their future field of work. There are around 39 sport, 11 cultural and nine international associations. On top of those there are three student associations and 13 study associations. But for students to bring what they learned into practice, there also are 11 student teams. These student teams are university-wide and address societal challenges by carrying out projects.

These student teams address challenges in the fields of energy, health and smart mobility. Besides projects like a solar-powered family car, a car made from bio composite and drones, which deliver medicines, teams also focus on sustainable chain processes, future living and renewable energy resources.

The teams that are interesting for us Mechanical Engineering students to take seat in will be covered below

Sjoerd Narinx ATeam The Automotive Technology team is a team in which students of the TU/e, and the Fontys work together to participate in the Grand Cooperative Driving Challenge of 2016. For this, the team developed the required technologies for their Toyota Prius. Right now the team is advancing the technologies that are already implemented, this to make the self-driving car even smarter.

The ATeam eventually wants to be able to give anyone, of any age, or with any disability, the freedom of mobility. They also know that people don’t trust a self-driving car from the first moment, because they don’t know what the car is able to monitor and how it will react. Therefore they designed a Human-Machine Interface. This interface keeps the human occupant informed of lane markings, other cars and obstacles that the car’s sensors have picked up.

The human can then see what the car sees and knows when to takeover if needed. A system that allows the car to communicate with pedestrians and cyclists is also being designed by this team.

TU/ecomotive TU/ecomotive is a team that wants to show that there is a lot of potential in the evolution of the car. They see that the automotive industry moves to electric vehicles more and more. Cars are getting a lot more fuel efficient and less greenhouse gasses are being emitted. This is done by making cars lighter, but the materials used to make the cars lighter are not sustainable at all. Therefore this team builds a car which is clean from factory until demolition.

They use new materials like bio-composite to replace structural components that are usually made from steel, aluminium and carbon.

The team goes through all kinds of different stages in the process to making the car. These consist of choosing the materials that are going to be used, making the car more efficient and eventually making it modular, all while maintaining comfort.

InMotion

Tech United Tech United is one of the most well-known student teams of the TU/e. Everyone knows that Tech United takes place in the RoboCup where a team of five completely autonomous robots play soccer matches against teams from other universities worldwide. Both the software and the hardware of these robots are upgraded every year. This includes the way of moving and handling the ball, but also a way to do a human-alike dribble is implemented last year.

Last edition Tech United became world champion in the middle size league again.

Tech United doesn’t only take place in the RoboCup with soccer robots, they also take place in the @Home competitions with service robots AMIGO and SERGIO. In this competition the care robots must execute several tasks, like taking something out of the kitchen and recognize people. For these robots the team designs and improves for example better ways to map the environment or recognise faces. For more about Tech United be sure to check out page 16 to 18.

URE University Racing Eindhoven makes race cars for the last 15 years, and thus is the oldest student team of the TU/e. This team competes in the Formula Student Competition in which it has to make a small Formula-style race car. The car has to be designed, built and tested based on a series of rules, whose purpose is both ensuring on-track safety and promoting clever problem solving.

This is done because that way the competition contains all aspects of a business, including R&D, manufacturing, testing, marketing, management, and fundraising. The team focusses on “educating the engineers of the future� and thus is a great place for students to gain experience in designing, manufacturing, and tuning the race cars of the future.

InMotion is a team that started building an electric Formula-style race car with the aim of gaining knowledge and experience, and to show the world what a team of young students can reach. Two and a half years later, the car was finished and the final testing began. Four months after the first test, the car broke the lap record for electrical vehicles at the Zandvoort circuit. The car also is the fastest electrical Formula-style race car ever built.

Their new project is making a completely electrical car to be able to drive the 24 hours of Le Mans. InMotion has the only car that is allowed to compete in the Garage 56 category, which is the category of cars purely made to innovate. This category only has safety regulations, so that these cars can be as innovative as possible, while maintaining the high safety standards. In 2021, InMotion will have finished their car to participate in the 24 hours of Le Mans.

Solar Team Eindhoven At last but definitely not least, Solar Team Eindhoven. This is undeniable the most famous team of the TU/e. As everyone knows this team builds a solar family car each year, to participate in the World Solar Challenge. The last two editions of this challenge the team got first place in both editions, both with quite a large margin to the second place.

The ultimate goal of the team is to develop a solar car that is ready for the future, while keeping it user friendly. The last car that the team built had a smaller battery and solar array than the one before, but it still achieved a range of 1000 kilometres on a sunny summer day in the Netherlands. The car even is designed that, if it generates more electricity than it can store, this electricity can be supplied back to the house or electric grid. And to make things even easier, the car even looks up free parking spots when approaching its destination and chooses the one which yields the most solar energy.

Shell Energy Challenge

This time a BFP that is somewhat different than others. In the Shell Energy Challenge everyone starts off in a group phase after which a shorter individual phase follows. For his BFP, Daan van Boekel worked on this Shell Energy Challenge.

Robbert Louwers Where most BFP’s consist of doing research or experiments on your own for the duration of two quartiles, the Shell Energy Challenge starts off with a group phase of 12 weeks. Students work in groups of four or five and need to find a significant and innovative contribution to the current energy problem, which is finding alternatives for the current usage of fossil fuels. Everyone knows these fossil fuels will not last forever, but since the biggest part of society still uses these fuels as their main source of energy, alternatives have to be found. They began in an orienting phase where they analyse the current energy problem and look at the alternatives already available or already being developed, after which the group chooses the subject they want to work on during the challenge.

In the second week of the project, the students participating in the challenge visited Shell, where they got assigned a mentor.

They had Skype meetings with this mentor once every two weeks, to keep him up to date with their progress and to discuss their problems. During the group phase of the challenge, they learned to not only look at the technical aspects of possible solutions, but to always look at the TECOP (Technological, Economical, Commercial, Organizational, Political) aspects of every solution. An interesting approach to a problem for a group consisting of five Mechanical Engineers. Their mentor taught them that at the start of finding a solution to the problem, they had to assume that the technological

aspect of the solution would not cause any problems and that first boundary conditions had to be defined. Think for example about the payback time; how long will it take to earn back the money spent on a solution, or the energy payback time; how long will it take before more sustainable energy is provided than the energy it cost to produce the solution.

After the orienting phase, Daan and his group decided to do more research on tidal lagoons. A tidal lagoon is basically a large tank that can be placed in the ocean. This tank then fills at high tide and lets the water flow back into the ocean through turbines at low tide, thus generating energy in the process.

The group part of the challenge is concluded with a ‘Dragon’s Den’, in which every group that participated in the challenge had to pitch their solution to a jury. This jury consisted of someone from Shell, the several coaches and of teachers from several faculties.

The prize that could be won was a trip to Shell Pernis. In addition to Daan’s group, two other groups participated in the challenge.

One group chose to do research on flying wind turbines and the other on energy storage with the help of salt, so called TCM’s (thermochemical materials).

After this Dragon’s Den, the individual part of the challenge started.

Here, Daan had to focus on a more specific subject of the tidal lagoon, which he found quite hard to do, since the time available for the individual part is much shorter than in other BFP’s, and so choosing a subject that is challenging enough, but not too much in depth was a challenge on itself. Finally, Daan made the choice to compare the tidal lagoons to other methods of generating energy through water. He compared wave energy (turbines that are placed close to shore, absorbing energy from the incoming waves), tidal streams (underwater turbines that generate energy through the ebb and flow) and the tidal lagoons. In his comparison he focused on the energy output per square meter. More about tidal lagoons and these other methods can be read in Simon Ster 49.4 in the article ‘Water as a source of energy’.

In the individual part of the challenge the focus lies more on the technical aspects than in the group part, as now Daan could look at the hard data concerning these solutions. For example the efficiency, limits and amount of turbines that can be placed within a certain area. Since not many countries have detailed data available about their waters and tides, he chose to use the data of one of the few countries which has it available in detail, the USA.

Since the tides work differently across several parts of the country, based on the surrounding environment, it was not possible to choose a single solution as the best one. Instead, Daan created a map in which he showed which solution could best be placed in which part of the country. He did this with the help of a Matlab script that he made, that was able to calculate the energy output according to some available parameters. The results of this Matlab script are shown in the figure on the bottom of the page. The map that is shown on the bottom of the graphs, is of the east coast of the USA. His conclusions were that under normal circumstances, wave energy would give the highest energy output, but that this is not a very scalable solution, since only a single line of turbines can be placed in a bay. Multiple lines behind each other will not have a high efficiency, since almost all energy of the waves has been absorbed by the first line of turbines. On the other hand, the tidal lagoons would be a very well scalable solution since the reservoir can simply be made bigger and the area in the reservoir can for example also be filled with wind turbines, or solar panels could be placed on the edges of the reservoir. Combinations of these sustainable energy solutions to optimise the energy output would all be options to look at in further research, as well as expanding the Matlab script that Daan made to take additional parameters into account, e.g. the payback time or CO2-emission. Daan already predicted that the results of this will be varying a lot based on the priorities of the companies in charge of the production.

About all their robots

Five thousand robots and four thousand robot enthusiasts from approximately 35 countries worldwide will gather mid-June in Montreal for RoboCup2018. Sounds like heaven, right?

Introduction

Middle-Size League

For the robots of Tech United Eindhoven, the TURTLE’s, SERGIO and AMIGO, Montréal is the place to shine. The TURTLE’s will again take on their strongest opponents in the Middle Size League. SERGIO and AMIGO will serve to win the @Home League. To make sure these robots stay ahead of the competition, also at RoboCup2018, the (human part of the) team has developed new hard- and software throughout the year.

The Middle-Size League of RoboCup focuses on systems with a distributed architecture, in this case a soccer team that has to play soccer. The TURTLE’s operate autonomously, this means that they are not controlled by team members: after the start of the match the team cannot change anything. We therefore argue that these TURTLE’s have all skills that a human player has, as a human player can also play autonomously. The TURTLE’s are able to detect the world around them, decide what the best next action is and execute that action. Actions include repositioning, shooting, passing and dribbling.

The human part of the team consists of (former) students, PhD’s and employees of the TU/e who are all interested in and actively working towards developments in the world of robotics. Since robotics is a very broad field, Tech United competes with (only) two different types of robots; soccer robots (the TURTLEs) and service robots (AMIGO and SERGIO).

RoboCup is an open source competition, which means that all information, from all different teams and leagues, is shared with each other after each world championship. This ensures that teams continuously have to innovate, and that new teams are able to get up to speed relatively fast. Aside from this, the rules of RoboCup are updated and expanded every year. In the remaining part of this article we will share with you our developments of last year, first the MSL team, then the @Home team.

To be able to perform well in a game as a team, a human team requires training. We try to encode all this learned information of the game and team play into the TURTLE’s. We will touch on this topic in the first part. Not only do we have to think about tactics, but we also have to develop the skills of the TURTLE’s. The second development we would like to share with you focuses on our attempt to increase the acceleration of the TURTLE’s.

holonomicity. A major drawback of the current platform is that when translating a maximum of two motors are used to accelerate, and that internal forces are created. To make matters worse, when accelerating in forward direction the two accelerating wheels are at the front of the platform. When accelerating, these wheels loose grip, rendering it impossible to accelerate further until grip is regained.

Strategy

The new platform uses eight wheels, arranged in four combinations of two wheels which we will refer to as wheel combinations. The two wheels of a wheel combination can be actuated independently, when both wheels rotate in the same direction the combination will move in that direction. To change the orientation of the wheel combination with respect to the robot, the wheels are rotated in the opposite direction, rotating the combination around the pivot.

When all the wheels are lined up correctly, the eight wheels will provide force to the platform in the direction of acceleration. Upon failure of align the wheels, internal forces are generated on the new platform.

A part of the team focuses on the strategy of the entire team.

Typical strategy questions would be: How many attackers are used? How many defenders? At what moments do we take a defensive stance, when do we react offensively? What positions do we take during a free-kick for our team? The current focus however, is not yet on these questions, these will be answered later. The focus now is on how to implement such a strategy and make it configurable. What tuning knobs would we like? A balance between offensive and defensive play?

For this we will use a playbook: a big collection of tactics, such as attacking over left/right, or doing a short move to evade an opponent. In a match with the rather defensive Portuguese team CAMBADA we might use a different set of attacking tactics then versus the rather offensive Chinese team Water. Hopefully this will allow us to more quickly change the strategy and react faster to changes in opponent strategy. Additionally, this should allow people with a better understanding of the soccer game and maybe less understanding of programming to work with us on a valid tactic for a certain opponent. This might not be easy. Our game might be called soccer, but due to the sizes of the players, ball and goals it gets a totally different feel, making people compare it to handball or basketball.

This new platform adds a lot of new challenges, not only in the hardware-field (e.g. suspension) but also from a control perspective.

During more elaborate maneuvers the heading of all the wheels has to be controlled perfectly, removing as many internal forces on the platform as possible. To tackle this problem we have designed a cascaded controller. Based on the velocity we would like to achieve for each wheel, the inner loop controls the current sent to the motors. This desired velocity per wheel is determined based on both a loop which controls the desired position we would like to achieve with the robot, and the kinematics of the platform.

The part of the team working towards improving the skills of the TURTLE’s is working on a new platform. To make sure we can outrun every opponent, this new platform has an increased acceleration. Our current three-wheeled platform positions using three electrical motors and omni-wheels positioned at 120 degree intervals. This allows the TURTLE to move in any direction, turn around its center and any combination, an ability called

of explanation! A completely different part of the software, the object recognition, has also been updated. So from now on the robots should be able to detect objects more robustly, which sounds an awful lot easier than it actually is. Even for the newest and most high-end detection algorithms it is very hard to be able to accurately detect objects with a limited set of training data.

During the European Open in Germany last April several completely new pieces of software have been developed. Among this new code are a chatbot and a conversation engine. First of all the conversation engine will be discussed. Using this conversation engine the robots can “detect” that certain information is missing.

As can be seen, SERGIO is still missing a very crucial part; arms.

SERGIO’s arms are being completely custom developed, making their development very time-consuming. SERGIO has a lot of advantages compared to AMIGO, one of which is the new set of wheels SERGIO uses to move. SERGIO’s wheels have more traction, which allows for better localization. Furthermore, SERGIO’s torso has degrees of freedom similar to that of a human, which allows him to “bend his knees”. In theory, SERGIO can even pick items up from the ground! This task can sadly only be tested once SERGIO has operational arms. These kinds of features are very convenient in a care and/or cure environment.

Another relatively new hardware feature which is present on both SERGIO and AMIGO, is a sound source localization board. As the name already suggests this board is used to sense the direction from which the loudest sound is coming. This is useful for caretaking robots since they use a unidirectional microphone, which only picks up sound from a very specific side or direction of the microphone. Using the sound source localization board the robots can “hear” from which side a person is talking and turn towards him or her, enabling the unidirectional microphone to correctly understand what is being said.

Next to the hardware also a lot, actually most of the innovations are done in the software area. First of all it is good to know that even though these robots have a lot of differences, most of the software, based on C++, ROS and python, can be directly copied from one to the other. Note that is far from usual in the world of robotics! Usually software is made with a specific robot and a specific goal in mind. This incredible accomplishment is due to the general coding approach used on the higher software-levels, and could theoretically be used for many different robotic systems.

The software on the highest level can be executed on both robots without changing a single word of code!

During the past year progress has been made on a lot of different software areas. First of all, this year a completely new graphical demo setup has been made. From now on a complete and very interesting demo can be given using only a graphical user interface on a tablet! This interface is so intuitive that nearly everybody can perform a demo with either AMIGO or SERGIO after 5 minutes

The robots will ask “Where can I find the beer?” This can be a very useful feature in a lot of different environments, since humans use a lot of assumptions and semantic knowledge in their language. For people it might sound very obvious to try to find beer in the fridge, however robots do not have this kind of semantic knowledge of the world (at least not yet!). Secondly the chatbot.

Using this chatbot everybody can communicate with the robots via either Telegram or Slack. Note that this communication is not a one way street! The robots actively respond to your messages and follow the commands that are given to them. So now you can order a beer from your couch using only your telephone, doesn’t that sound like a bright future?

Mediation

Een handige skill voor elke toekomstig ingenieur

Iedere student heeft er dagelijks mee te maken en lost het in de praktijk op zijn of haar manier meestal redelijk op. Indien het mislukt zijn de kosten over het algemeen goed te overzien, uitgedrukt in geld of aanzien.

Marco Mestriner Elke student komt op een of andere manier de arbeidsmarkt op: als werknemer, als leidinggevende of als eigenaar. Een foute onderhandeling kan tot enorme kosten leiden, of ontslag, faillissement of levenslang gebrouilleerd zijn. Tijdens je studie heb je enorm veel kennis opgedaan. Met een beetje geluk ga je die ook gebruiken. Maar heb je ook geleerd om te onderhandelen? Heb je vaardigheden opgebouwd die met effectieve conflicthantering te maken hebben?

Onderhandelen Een mediator is een conflicthanteerder: door het onderhandelen van partijen te beïnvloeden. Natuurlijk kan dat op ‘gevoel’ en ‘ervaring’ vaak goed gaan. Echter stoelt de mediation zoals in de westerse wereld wordt gebruikt op een academische aanpak, beter bekend als de ‘Harvard Negotiation Project’ . Dat gaat over ‘principieel onderhandelen’, het zoeken naar gezamenlijke en strijdige belangen en deze omzetten in een ‘win-win-oplossing’.

De methode kenmerkt zich door het scheiden van de mensen en het probleem zodat emoties en machtsvertoon niet de overhand krijgen. ‘Getting to the Yes: negotiation agreement without giving in’ wordt beschouwd als hèt standaardwerk op het gebied van onderhandelen. De auteurs verduidelijken de ‘winst’ en de beperkingen van de methode. Ze leggen uit hoe je kunt omgaan met onderhandelingspartners die zich onredelijk opstellen of

een andere stijl van onderhandelen hebben, hoe je van opties tot heldere afspraken komt en welke rol macht en machtsvertoon in een onderhandeling kunnen spelen. De auteurs werkten als docent bij Harvard University en waren consultant op het gebied van onderhandelen bij de Amerikaanse regering.

Conflict-hanteren In de loop van de jaren 80 is mediation als een spin-off uit dit ‘Harvard Negotiation Project’ voortgekomen. Natuurlijk kennen we al eeuwen geschilbeslechting, bijvoorbeeld op juridische basis .

Een rechter doet uitspraak op basis van de wet die van toepassing is. Mediation is echter sterk doorontwikkeld náást de rechtspraak.

Op vrijdag 23 maart 2018 is Prof. mr. D. Allewijn als bijzonder hoogleraar Mediation aan de Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam benoemd. Uit zijn inaugurale rede heb ik een aantal van zijn wijsheden overgenomen.

‘De kern van mediation is in mijn ogen als volgt. Ten minste twee personen en/of instanties zoeken een oplossing voor een gezamenlijk probleem, maar het lukt hen niet die te vinden, hoewel het op het oog een oplosbaar probleem is. Dat kan dus het vaststellen van de te vergoeden letselschade zijn, of de vraag wie op welk moment de gemeenschappelijke ruimte schoonmaakt.

aan. Door diens bemoeienis wordt de kans groter dat het de betrokkenen lukt om het probleem wel op te lossen. Die neutrale derde zonder beslissingsmacht is de mediator, datgene wat hij doet is mediation. Waardoor lukt het de betrokkenen in aanwezigheid van de mediator wel om het probleem op te lossen, waar het hen zonder diens begeleiding niet lukte? Soms is die enkele aanwezigheid al het geheim van de smid. Met ‘vreemde ogen’ erbij gedraagt men zich anders. Maar meestal moet de mediator aan het werk: hij doet interventies. Hij gaat met zijn gedrag het gedrag van zijn cliënten beïnvloeden. Het wezen van mediation is gedragsbeïnvloeding. Het op wetenschappelijke wijze bestuderen en onderzoeken van mediation behoort dan ook primair tot de discipline van de gedragswetenschappen, meer in het bijzonder de sociale psychologie. Het Handboek Mediation neemt diezelfde positie in. Waarop richt de mediator zijn of haar interventies? De metafoor van de zeilboot helpt om dit te laten zien. In die metafoor probeert een zeiler van A naar B te zeilen . Hij heeft de wind in de zeilen, maar na een uur varen stelt hij vast, kijkend naar een punt aan de horizon, dat hij geen steek is opgeschoten. Waar komt dit door? Het antwoord luidt: ‘de onderstroom’. Zo is het ook met de personen en instanties die vergeefs proberen een probleem op te lossen. De meewind (ze hebben er beide belang bij dat het probleem wordt opgelost of uit-onderhandeld) legt het af tegen de onderstroom. De bovenstroom is dan het inhoudelijke probleem.

In de onderstroom zitten negatieve emoties, wantrouwen en oud zeer (samengevat: het conflict ). Partijen zijn dan drukker bezig met elkaar tegenwerken dan met het oplossen van hun gezamenlijke probleem of het onderhandelend overbruggen van de kloof die hen scheidt. De mediator helpt de betrokkenen om de invloed van de onderstroom te verkleinen en/of die van de meewind te vergroten: van ‘tegen elkaar’ naar: ‘samen tegen het probleem’.. ..‘Vrijwel alle Nederlandse mediators zullen hun aandacht op beide (boven én onderstroom) richten. Sterker nog: het met partijen schakelen tussen de bovenstroom en de onderstroom is hun kerncompetentie.’ ... ’Wat de voornaamste focus is, hangt af van een groot aantal factoren, zoals de aard van de materie, de vraag of partijen tot elkaar in een relatie staan, de vraag of dat een relatie is waaruit zij zich desgewenst kunnen losmaken, kenmerken van de deelnemers en hun omgeving (achterbannen), urgentie, de op het spel staande belangen, de mate van vrijwilligheid van de mediation, de mate van conflictescalatie, de mate waarin de kwestie al gejuridiseerd is (een zwaar gejuridiseerd conflict laat zich ook in mediation niet meer volledig terugbrengen tot de belangentegenstelling die het oorspronkelijk was), de aard van het conflict en de vraag of de mediator niet toch op een of andere wijze macht over partijen kan uitoefenen (macht die partijen hem of haar hebben toegekend, macht ontleend aan status of expertise (materiedeskundigheid; macht ontleend aan de context waarin hij of zij optreedt). Is er sprake van een vrijwillige duurrelatie en willen partijen die voortzetten, dan zal de mediator zijn interventies primair op die relatie richten. Maar is het in feite een dwangrelatie (partijen die eigenlijk niet van elkaar af kunnen: familie, buren, VvE) dan zal een pragmatische set van afspraken vaak beter werken (buurtbemiddeling).’ Bijvoorbeeld: bij een conflict met een klant die een grote eenmalige order kreeg, ligt de relatie anders dan bij een klant die al jaren voor een significante omzet zorgt.

Is in zo’n geval sprake van een hoge escalatiegraad (vijandschap), dan kan vermindering van afhankelijkheid de aangewezen strategie zijn. Staat al vast dat partijen uit elkaar gaan, dan kan materiedeskundigheid een pre zijn (exitmediations in het arbeidsrecht, scheidingsbemiddeling onder het vFAS-contract).

Gaat het niet om een exit, maar om een transformatie (van levenspartners naar gescheiden ouders), dan is een combinatie van materiedeskundigheid en relatiegerichtheid geëigend. Moet de keuze tussen scheiden of blijven nog gemaakt worden, een echte onderstroomvraag, dan zal de mediator zich voornamelijk op die vraag moeten richten. Is er sprake van een identiteitsconflict, dan zal de mediator er niet omheen kunnen zijn aandacht op de onderstroom te richten. Bij meer rationele conflicten, zoals die over de verdeling van taken of geld, zal een materiedeskundige mediator met enige statuur veelal wat kunnen meeblazen met de meewind. Gaat het om ondernemers, dan zal mediation kunnen worden opgevat als begeleid onderhandelen; gaat het om overheid en burger, dan is dit onderhandelings-frame juist weer niet geëigend, omdat dat refereert aan een in dat domein onaanvaardbaar ‘handjeklap’. Dan kan mediation beter worden aangeduid als een zoektocht naar een gezamenlijk gedragen rechtmatige oplossing.’

Moet ik dit nou echt allemaal weten?

Kortom, onderhandelen, conflicthantering en mediation liggen vlak bij elkaar. Voor elke academische student is het in professioneel opzicht zeer aan te bevelen zich hierin grondig te verdiepen. Als je het later fout doet rijzen de kosten de pan uit. Voor elk mens is het ook aanbevelingswaardig om kennis te hebben van de boven/onderstroom in communicatie en om bij onderhandelen de knop om te kunnen zetten, om de kwestie van standpunten naar belangen te herformuleren. Dat zou heel wat relaties sparen.

Mocht je er nou echt geen zin hebben om je in dergelijke materie te verdiepen: geen nood! Er staat (tegen advocatentarieven) zowel binnen als buiten Nederland een heel leger aan mediators voor je klaar die je graag verder willen helpen bij het beperken dan wel voorkomen van verdere schade.

Hoe vind je een kamer in Eindhoven?

Het zal vast niet de eerste keer zijn dat je hoort of leest dat op kamers gaan een leuke en vooral ook leerzame ervaring is, maar hoe vind je nu eigenlijk een kamer in Eindhoven? Hoe zorg je dat je studentenleven écht kan beginnen? Wat zijn de do’s en dont’s en hoe bereid je je voor? Zijn dat voor jou relevante vragen, lees dan snel verder!

Daan van Boekel Het oude en vertrouwde Kamernet Een van de oudere manieren om een kamer te vinden is met Kamernet. Hiervoor moet je een account aanmaken en het kunnen reageren op kamers kost geld. Daartegenover staat dat het wel een van de meer overzichtelijke manieren is om een kamer te vinden. Oppervlakte, de datum van de kijkavond en andere info over kamers is duidelijk weergegeven op kamernet.nl.

Vier manieren Er zijn vier veelgebruikte manieren om een kamer te vinden, namelijk: via connecties, Kamernet, Facebook en Vestide.

Daarnaast kun je ook nog particulier huren, of als je je ouders lief aankijkt willen ze misschien wel investeren in een studentenstulpje voor jou en je vrienden.

Connecties, daar moet je het van hebben!

Het makkelijkste en fijnste is om via via een kamer te vinden.

Dat klinkt natuurlijk heel logisch, maar het is vaak een optie die makkelijk over het hoofd gezien kan worden. Wanneer er bij vrienden of vriendinnen een kamer vrijkomt, kun je misschien zelfs zonder kijkavond al binnen komen.

Facebook Op Facebook zijn verschillende groepen waarop kamers gepost worden. Als je “find a roommate Eindhoven” zoekt, dan vind je ook meteen de grootste groep. Hier worden per dag al meerdere kamers gepost, het is dan ook de optie met het meeste aanbod.

Wanneer je via Facebook op een kamer reageert is het slim om nog even te reageren onder de post (met iets in de trend van PM gestuurd), dat zorgt dat je net even wat vaker gezien wordt door je potentiële huisgenoten.

Vestide, wachttijd is alles Als je dit artikel aan het lezen bent, dan heb je waarschijnlijk interesse om in de nabije toekomst op kamers te gaan. Je gaat dan nu het volgende doen: 1. Open je laptop 2. Ga naar Vestide.nl 3. Maak een account aan.

Vestide werkt namelijk op basis van wachttijd en is bovendien gratis. Ikzelf heb me in 5 VWO al ingeschreven en ben dus flink wachttijd aan het sparen. Mocht ik m’n kamer beu raken, of naar iets groters op zoek willen, dan ben ik bijna verzekerd van een leuke optie via Vestide. Ga ik het niet gebruiken, niks aan de hand!

Ik ben uitgenodigd voor een kijkavond, en nu?

Yes, we hebben uitgevonden hoe Kamernet werkt en zelfs een berichtje in elkaar weten te knutselen wat ons een aantal positieve reacties heeft opgeleverd. Dus, een kijkavond, hoe?

Allereerst zorg dat je op tijd bent, meestal stelt iedereen zich aan het begin even voor en als je dat mist, kun je meteen buiten de boot vallen.

Wees kritisch, als je het huis vies vindt of de mensen je niet aanstaan kun je beter eerder weggaan. Anders verdoe je alleen je eigen tijd en die van de bewoners.

Probeer jezelf te zijn, maar natuurlijk wel de leukste versie van jezelf. Als je aan de andere kant zit en een nieuwe huisgenoot moet gaan kiezen, dan kan ik je vertellen dat een people pleaser meteen opvalt en niet in positieve zin.

Hoe schrijf ik dat opvallende berichtje?

Je gaat je eerste reactie plaatsen, wat zet je daar nu in? Je moet je even voorstellen dat het op het moment echt “primetime” is. Veel studenten zoeken rond de zomer een kamer om hun studentenleventje een boost te geven. Op onze laatste kamer waren maar liefst 150 reacties gekomen, dus opvallen is een must! Hierbij in ieder geval een aantal dont’s. Dit soort berichtjes hebben we echt gehad, geen stukjes, maar het hele bericht.

Als een huis 150 berichtjes binnenkrijgt en je daadwerkelijk niks over jezelf vertelt, dan heb je weinig kans om uitgenodigd te worden. Dus vertel iets over jezelf en probeer het leuk te maken.

Beeld je even in dat je zelf de reacties moet beoordelen en probeer clichés te vermijden.

In berichtjes staat soms, neem je favoriete drankje mee. Mocht dit Grey Goose wodka zijn, geen zorgen. Niemand geeft er iets om of je drankje €2,- kostte of €500,-, de mensen beoordelen jou en het verhaal dat je erbij hebt.

Als laatste, laat je niet gek maken. Helaas, je bent het de eerste keer niet geworden. Probeer te leren van je ervaring en neem het mee voor de volgende keer. Die kamer komt er vanzelf wel!

Profiel: BMW M4

A car with high expectations

The history and heritage of the Bayerische Motoren Werke mostly consists of building sporty coupes that are fast, engaging and fun to drive; “Freude am Fahren” as the builders promise.

The last in the line of these legendary coupes is the BMW M4. Does it live up to the high expectations?

Noah Tabor Exterior The looks of a good M-car are never modest but never in your face either. Most of the times this is more difficult than one would believe it to be. However, BMW has done it for generations and this newest M4 is no exception. The black double spoke grill, the low front splitter, the full carbon roof and spoiler, the four exhaust pipes, the power bump on the bonnet and the special wing mirrors leave no doubt that this is a special car. Immediately recognizable for the enthusiasts but just another loud BMW for other road users who are not into cars. Especially when the car’s specification provides it with a grey metallic color that could be seen on almost any ordinary car it is a machine that whispers: “I am special” but does not shout it. The wide hips above the rear tires, which are 40 millimeters wider than on the regular 4 series, give it more of stance than the car on which it is based. If you drive a normal 4 series you better not park it next to this because it actually looks really restricted. This is something BMW did really well when designing the M4.

Interior The interior of the M4 is actually really similar to that of a regular BMW. Fit and finish are high, as can be expected in a premium German car. A few touches are upgraded which makes it feel more special though. The biggest change made is the installation of the bucket seats. With the right settings these seats really grab you. Sliding off your seat in a fast corner on a country lane is a thing of the past. When someone is familiar with a regular BMW interior and he takes a seat in the car, a couple of thing jump to mind. The gages are different and come with orange and red shift lights. The paddles behind the steering wheel for the manual mode of the 7 speed dual clutch transmission are slimmer and taller, which makes them more easy to use in a corner. And last but not least there are two extra buttons on the steering wheel: M1 and M2. These buttons are pre-programmable and provide the driver with different driving modes.

A big part of the interior are the infotainment system and the car setup menu’s. The multimedia side of this works the same as in every other BMW that carries the latest version of the iDrive system. It is fast and easy to use with a touch pad as well as a physical turning wheel. It has some extra features on a M-car like a lap-timer and G-force meter but nothing really groundbreaking here.

The adjustment of the vehicle dynamics is a really nice thing to have. The car is adjustable in 4 different sections, which are throttle response, steering directness, damper hardness and gearbox speed. If you want to drive under normal conditions, like traffic jams or city driving, the softer and comfortable settings make it a good daily driver. However, it will never be a super comfortable car to drive because it will always stay direct and pretty hard.

When all settings are put into Sport Plus and the ESP is turned into MDM mode (M Dynamic Mode), which leaves it on in specific cases, the character of the car transforms into a beast that needs to be tamed. A little movement in change of throttle position results in a fierce acceleration and a deafening noise from the exhaust, which valves have opened in the Sport Plus mode. The steering has become quite heavy but really direct. The feeling in the steering wheel is tremendous, you really feel what the front tires are doing on the road. The ride has become far from soft now. Every bump and height difference in the surface of the road can be felt through the chassis and every upshift is a hard blow to your back. The total package just transformed into a race car for the public road.

Driving The aesthetics of the car changed. However, the essentials of an M-car are about driving and driving pleasure. The challenges for BMW were therefore in the field of drivability. That’s why the most important changes are made in this particular field.

All of the predecessors of the M4 starting with the E30 M3 as a homologation car for group A touring car racing were in possession of high revving naturally aspirated engines. This changed this generation though. The car has a 3.0 liter six in line engine with two turbos. On paper it produces 431 horsepower and 550 newton-meters of torque. However, there is a wide believe that BMW has been a bit pessimistic with these results because it performs a lot better on most independent tests.

Nevertheless, it is an impressive car to drive. On the highway it is easy to drive it way over 200 kilometers an hour. With the driver’s pack it has an electronically limited top speed of 280 kilometers an hour.

The last step that can make it more extreme is putting the seven speed dual clutch gearbox in manual mode. This actually makes the car a bit frightening. One wrong downshift or too much throttle input will make the tail swing around like a happy dog. On the public road this is a bit too much for most people.

Turning off the traction control and ESP fully takes a professional driver or an adrenalin junky. This is actually only meant for the track because it is really dangerous on the road. An extra feature is unlocked when everything is in its most sporty mode through: Launch Control. Launch Control is a way to get the full acceleration potential out of the car by launching it from a high stationary 3000 rotations per minute.

as a focused sports car. If you want to haul three children along, you are going to have a problem since it only has two chairs in the back. These chairs however are large enough to transport two adults in the back. So it is really a 4 seater instead of a 2+2. The trunk is actually quite big for a coupe but really wide things won’t fit in because it opens like a sedan trunk. On the other side, if you want to transport a lot, you would buy a SUV anyway.

Small drawbacks No car is perfect, neither is the BMW M4. There are a couple of drawbacks but they are mostly subjective. However, they are worth mentioning anyway.

Modern cars have a lot of safety systems. The BMW is no exception to this. In general, these safety-features are a really positive thing. However, they can be a bit intrusive if not set in the right way. Being the good old BMW driver that doesn’t use the indicator to change lanes and drives way too close to the car in front of them becomes difficult with lane assist and collision warning. Of course, one can always turn them off!

Conclusion The BMW M4 has to live up to high expectations because of its legendary predecessors. After driving the car for several days, I am very certain that it lives up to these high expectations but it is not a car for everybody. The looks of the car give away that something special is in your sight without being too much. The interior and especially the bucket seats make you feel like you are in a real sports car and the driving experience is immense. It always feels light and extremely fast in a straight line and at the same time extremely nimble in the corners. On the other hand, with a couple of buttons it transforms into a car that is useable on a daily basis without making a lot of compromises. On the whole, BMW did a great job creating a new legendary generation of twin turbo M-coupe for the future, “Freude am Fahren”; for sure!

First of all is the fuel consumption. As expected with a sports car, the fuel consumption is not the best in the world. Real world fuel consumption comes down to about 1 liter per 8 kilometers if driven on cruise control in daily traffic most of the times. Most sport car owners will take this for granted though.

If you’re a sunroof lover the M4 is not the car for you. Because it is very focused on driving pleasure and performance, the roof is completely created out of reinforced carbon. Unfortunately, this excludes a sunroof. If you want to see the sun from inside your M4, you should take the convertible. However, this is a completely different car.

Staut: Christiaan Huygens

Een natuurfilosoof en werktuigbouwer van het eerste uur

Werktuigbouwkunde wordt ook wel gezien als de toepassing van natuurkunde en wiskunde. Één van de eerste werktuigkundigen is de uit Brugge afkomstige Simon Stevin. De tijd waarin Stevin leefde was een tijd van grote progressie in vele wetenschappelijke disciplines. In deze Staut worden de hoogtepunten bekeken van een van de grondleggers van de mechanica, zij het niet een van de, of misschien wel de, bekendste Nederlandse uitvinders: Christiaan Huygens. Huygens was een vooraanstaand wetenschapper die veel bereikt heeft en was hij zowel in de fysica, als in de wiskunde zeer befaamd.

Rik Lubbers Huygens groeide op in een vermogend gezin, waardoor hij makkelijk toegang had tot de juiste mensen en het juiste onderwijs. Door de contacten van zijn vader, die diplomaat en topadviseur van het Koningshuis was, kon Huygens mee op een gezantschapsreis naar Denemarken, waar hij de vergeefse hoop had om Descartes te kunnen ontmoeten. Het was deze reis die Huygens deed besluiten om zijn diplomatieke carrière te stoppen om zich aan de wetenschap te wijden.

Simon Stevin Als 17-jarige was Huygens al goed bekwaam met de wiskunde van zijn tijd. Een van de eerste grote wiskundige stellingen waar de kersverse wiskundige zich mee bezig hield, was de zogeheten kettinglijn. Een kettinglijn is een stuk touw waarbij de uiteinden zijn vastgemaakt. Niet ver voor de bevindingen van Huygens, hadden zowel Stevin als Galileo Galilei bepaald dat een kettinglijn een parabool moest zijn. De benadering van Huygens liet echter zien dat het geen parabool kon zijn. Door middel van het hangen van evenredig verdeelde gewichtjes, ontkrachtte Huygens de theorie van Stevin en Galilei.

Middelpuntvliedende kracht Het is de tweede wet van Newton die de hedendaagse samenleving goed in het geheugen heeft geprent. De in 1687 uitgekomen beschrijving van Newton, is dan ook de meest volledige beschrijving over de theorie van de simpele harmonische bewegingen. Zij het niet dat in 1659 Huygens zijn theorie al uitbracht, waar hij de denkfouten van Descartes herstelde en de beschrijving voor de kwadratische vorm van de tweede wet van Newton beschreef: de centrifugale kracht. Descartes was ervan overtuigd dat een lichaam pas van richting kon veranderen mits

er een botsing heeft plaatsgevonden met een ander lichaam. De formule die hedendaags nog altijd gebruikt wordt, is gebaseerd op de relatie tussen de massa (m), snelheid (v) en de afstand tot het draaipunt (r), zoals beschreven in de functie hieronder.

Toen Huygens deze algemene formule publiceerde in 1673, zorgde dit voor een grote stap in het begrijpen van de banen van planeten in het zonnestelsel. Het was het einde van de derde wet van Kepler, waar het kwadraat van de omlooptijd van een planeet evenredig is met de derde macht van haar halve lange as.

De in 1690 gepubliceerde theorie over de golven hield tot 1704 stand, toen Isaac Newton zijn theorie publiceerde waarin Newton concludeerde dat licht niet uit golven, maar uit deeltjes moest bestaan. De publicatie van dit manuscript kwam de, toch al zeer bekritiseerde theorie van Huygens duur te staan: de theorie van Newton werd leidend. Huygens zou tot 1819 moeten wachten om zijn theorie opnieuw tot leven te zien komen. De onderzoeken naar interferentie van Thomas Young en het onderzoek van Fançois Arago naar het Poisson-punt, die alleen door golven verklaard konden worden door de golftheorie van Huygens.

Astronomie

Het slingeruurwerk In de 17e eeuw waren de bestaande klokken zo onnauwkeurig dat men er op zee geen praktisch nut ondervonden. Zijn vriend en collega Galileo Galilei had aan het begin van de 17e reeds onderzoek gedaan naar de werking van een slinger, wat Huygens inspireerde om hier zichzelf ook in te verdiepen. Aan de hand van de ritmische beweging die een slinger maakt, die Galilei reeds had ontdekt, begon Huygens pendules, ofwel ‘slingeruurwerken’ te ontwerpen, waardoor hij veel nauwkeurigere tijdswaarneming kon hanteren. Het was Huygens die de relatie tussen de slingertijd (Tslinger), de valversnelling (g) en de lengte van het koord (of de staaf) tussen het rotatiepunt en de massa (l) wiskundig wist vast te leggen, wat doorsloeg in het grote succes van het slingeruurwerk.

De wiskundige formule voor de ideale slinger, die vandaag de dag

Net als vele wetenschappers in zijn tijd, was ook Huygens geïnteresseerd in het heelal. De methoden, en vooral de instrumenten, waarmee naar de sterren werd gekeken, waren echter van te ondermaatse kwaliteit. Huygens besloot daarop zijn eigen telescoop te maken. Het werd een 66 meter lange telescoop, zonder kijkbuis. De twee lenzen, middels een touw verbonden, moesten handmatig met elkaar op een lijn gezet worden. Het was met deze telescoop dat Huygens de ring om Saturnus zag en beschreef als een solide platte schijf om de planeet heen. Naast de ring, ontdekte hij ook geografische kenmerken op het oppervlakte van de planeet Mars, evenals een van de manen van Saturnus, die later Titan genoemd zou worden. Huygens was dan ook de eerste die de omlooptijd van Mars nagenoeg precies had bepaald: 24,5 uur, daar de daadwerkelijke omlooptijd 24 uur en 37 minuten is.

Vooruitgang is het woord dat moet opkomen wanneer men aan

altijd nog gebruikt wordt, staat hieronder beschreven.

Om een seconde zo nauwkeurig mogelijk te benaderen, berekende Huygens dat de lengte van de slinger 99,4 centimeter moest zijn.

Dit uurwerk was zo accuraat dat het de nauwkeurigste klok was tot 1930, toen men erachter kwam dat de klokken op basis van kwarts een meer nauwkeurige tijdswaarneming vertoonden. Het was dus het uurwerk van Huygens dat bijna 275 jaar de high tech standaard voor uurwerken was.

De golftheorie Één van de meest befaamde wetenschappelijke stukken van Huygens is zijn golftheorie van het licht. Huygens geloofde al dat de snelheid van licht niet oneindig groot kon zijn, en zijn theorie werd bevestigd door de experimenten van de Deense astronoom Ole Rømer. Rømer observeerde de eclipsen van een maan van Jupiter, waar hij ontdekte dat de eclipsen later dan voorspeld optraden wanneer Jupiter verder van de aarde verwijderd was.

Dit was volgens Rømer alleen te verklaren doordat het licht een langere afstand moest overbruggen en dus niet een oneindige grote snelheid heeft. Huygens redeneerde dat licht moest bestaan uit longitudinale golven.

Christiaan Huygens denkt, gezien Huygens aan de voet van de berg aan rijke kennis, waar tegenwoordig nog steeds op gebouwd wordt, de basis heeft gelegd. Samen met Simon Stevin en Galileo Galilei is Huygens één van de eerste werktuigkundigen, waar zijn uitvinding van het slingeruurwerk en de golftheorie van het licht zijn meest befaamde werken zijn. Het is niet voor niets dat Huygens gezien wordt als de meest vooruitstrevende natuurfilosoof tussen Descartes en Newton.

Het Simonlied

Karaoke!

De leden van onze Vereniging hebben altijd een grote behoefte gehad aan gezang.

Dit blijkt in veel gevallen uit verslagen van excursies en activiteiten reeds vanaf de oprichting. Een belangrijk onderwerp tijdens dit gezang is altijd een liefde voor Simon Stevin geweest.

Sjoerd Narinx Helaas is hiervan weinig direct historisch bewijs te vinden. Het oudst gedocumenteerde Simonlied is zodoende het “Simon Stevin, halleluja”. Hierna, in de tijd dat ons huisorkest De Klootkransblazers nog bestond, heeft men ook nog enige tijd “Het lied van de klootekrans” gezongen. Beide liederen zijn echter in de loop der jaren in de vergetelheid geraakt, waarna er begin jaren 90 grote behoefte was aan een nieuw lijflied. Enkele jaren is hiertoe een opdracht geformuleerd tijdens het introkamp, waarbij eerstejaars een lied moest schrijven en deze door een bekende zanger laten inzingen. De destijds bekende zanger Henny Weijmans uit Mierlo heeft voor fl.25,- per uur geholpen met het schrijven en inzingen van het “Wij brengen jou een serenade” in de zomer van 1991.

Dit lied heeft het vijf jaar volgehouden, voor de behoefte naar

nieuw zangmateriaal te groot werd. De Simonliedcommissie heeft in 1996 niet alleen een liederenbundel uitgebracht, maar had tevens de opdracht een nieuw Simonlied te schrijven. Na lang wachten werd het “Terwijl ik trek aan mijn sigaar” gepresenteerd.

Dit nummer, net als de melodie waarop het gezongen word, is jammerlijk in vergetelheid geraakt. Het wachten duurde namelijk zó lang, dat het Bestuur besloot vóór die tijd het “Zeilwagenlied” uit te brengen. Dit lied bleek zo makkelijk zingbaar, in vergelijking met het lied van de SiLiCo, dat het Zeilwagenlied sedert mei 1997 tot het officiële Simonlied is benoemd.

Excursion Toverland

A one of a kind visit

Before the members of the 61st board of Simon Stevin were appointed, they all wore a purple polo shirt. The board members were often compared with employees of theme park ‘Toverland’, because of the matching colors of their polos. Because of this comparison, the idea of visiting Toverland with Simon Stevin came to the minds of some people, including the Commissioner of Excursions of this year. Because of this comparison, something great happened: A tour through Toverland!

Luuk Moerenhout The day started with 30 mechanical engineers who were hungry for the knowledge behind rollercoasters and the experience in a ride. After a short trip with the bus we arrived at Toverland, there we were received kindly by the head of human relations of Toverland. Before we visited the park, we listened to a short presentation about the history and vision of the company and the daily technical challenges they run into. The technical part of the presentation was given by the project manager of the theme park itself, named Paul. He was already more than 10 years the head of all the technological projects within Toverland. Because of that he could answer almost all the hard questions of the students.

A few hours later we went back to the center of the park, where we enjoyed a lunch provided by Toverland. When our hunger was satisfied we visited the park. Everyone was enthusiastic and went directly to all the different rollercoasters, and because it was not that busy in the park we did not have to wait long enter an attraction.

After the presentation we visited the new part of the park which was still in construction. Paul guided us through the construction site where we saw how a 40m meter high rollercoaster was installed and tested. Although the technology behind the tour was not really rocket science, it was impressive to see how everything was built and planned.

After three hours of free time in the third biggest theme park of the Netherlands, we went back to our bus which took us back to Eindhoven. In the bus, YER, a sponsor who joined us the whole day, prepared a quiz about Simon Stevin and YER, and the winner received a JBL-box. All in all it was a very educational and fun day!

Allereerst: welkom bij werktuigbouwkunde! Na een vaak lange vakantie ligt er een nieuwe fase in je leven voor je; studeren aan de TU/e en alles wat daarbij hoort. Tijdens de Introductieweek zul je kennis maken met de faculteit, de studie en het studentenleven.

Je zult ervaren wat er in de studie van je verwacht wordt en wat de mogelijkheden zijn om je daarnaast te ontwikkelen. Voor sommigen betekent dit ook het omschakelen van thuis wonen naar zelfstandig wonen, wat een extra uitdaging is voor je studiediscipline.

Want vergis je niet, thuis of op kamers, het is nu (weer) tijd om aan het werk te gaan. Je zult merken dat je hier met een groep studenten bij elkaar bent die allemaal techniek op een of andere manier leuk vinden, die allemaal weinig moeite hebben gehad met de exacte vakken en die nu allemaal nieuwsgierig zijn naar wat er komen gaat.

Er staat veel te gebeuren. Vanaf de eerste week mag je drie nieuwe vakken gaan volgen en daarnaast het groepsproject en een aantal tooltrainingen gaan doen. Je zult snel merken dat er hard gewerkt moet worden. Als je achterstand oploopt, is het moeilijk om dat weer in te halen. Want ‌ het tempo gaat snel omhoog.

Kortom, in de komende paar weken zul je merken dat je soms moeite moet doen om de stof bij te houden en over acht weken staan de eerste tentamens al voor de deur. Die tentamens zijn een grote verandering, want je moet voor elk vak uiteindelijk een voldoende halen. Je mag tentamens wel overdoen, maar hoe vaker dat moet, hoe meer je gaat achterlopen met je studie.

Bij collega-studenten die hier al langer rondlopen hoor je vaak terug: op het VWO ging alles eigenlijk vanzelf, maar op de TU was ik ineens niet meer bij de beste van de klas en moest ik mijn best doen om bij te blijven.

Uiteraard doen alle docenten hun uiterste best om je te helpen. Dat betekent ook dat, zo gauw je zelf merkt dat je moeite hebt met de stof, je de docent (bijvoorbeeld tijdens de Begeleide Zelfstudie) om hulp kunt vragen. Daarnaast is er je tutor, in het eerste kwartiel je studentmentor/tutor (begeleider bij het projectonderwijs) om je te helpen met het projectonderwijs en het aanleren van nieuwe studievaardigheden. Verder heb je een docentcoach voor vragen over studieplanning, keuzes die je moet maken of gewoon voor een goed advies. Mocht je daar behoefte aan hebben dan kun je ook contact opnemen met de studieadviseur. Zij kan je helpen met alle vragen over planning, vakken, prioriteiten, etc.

Al met al sta je nu aan het begin van een grote uitdaging. Het kan een mooie reis worden, de gidsen staan klaar, maar je moet zelf op weg gaan.

Ik ben Lonneke Boons, studieadviseur bij de faculteit Werktuigbouwkunde. Mocht je studiegerelateerde vragen of problemen hebben, aarzel dan niet, maar loop langs, mail of maak een afspraak.

Tot ziens bij W! Lonneke Boons is de studieadviseur voor eerstejaarsstudenten en houdt zich verder bezig met de voorlichting voor aankomend studenten. Zo is ze nauw betrokken bij de open dagen en hebben veel mensen haar waarschijnlijk al eens gezien bij de studiekeuzecheckdagen, welke zij mede organiseert.

Lonneke heeft een aantal verschillende opleidingen gevolgd. Eerst heeft ze een opleiding sociale studies aan de Avans hogeschool gevolgd. Net voor de crisis bleek dat hier niet genoeg werk in te vinden was en dat deze opleiding niet voldoende was voor wat ze wilde. Hierna zijn er nog een aantal verschillende studies versleten.

Tegenwoordig volgt ze naast haar werk als studieadviseur nog een studie psychologie aan de open universiteit. Alhoewel het volgens haar erg zwaar is om een volledig zelfstandige studie te volgen naast haar werk, vindt ze het wel erg leuk. Lonneke zou iedereen dan ook adviseren altijd door te blijven leren, hoe druk het ook is.

Wist je dat?! Lonneke Boons is van binnen ook een beetje een W-er! Ze heeft een fietsenmakerscursus gedaan, houdt ervan om Oldtimers op te knappen en fietst vooral heel erg graag. Dit doet ze door heel Europa; Frankrijk, Spanje Portugal en noem zo maar op.

Over haar favoriete collega’s is Lonneke een beetje mysterieus.

Het liefste zou ze iedereen opnoemen waar ze mee samenwerkt, maar na enig aandringen hebben we het toch uit haar weten te trekken. Marijke Creusen is een van haar meest favoriete collega’s, maar ook met Marcia Bakermans, Joyce de Vaan en Michiel van Gorp kan ze het echt goed vinden. Samen met een aantal van deze medewerkers is Lonneke dan ook meer dan eens te vinden op een borrel van Simon Stevin. Mocht je haar dan ook eens op een informele manier willen spreken, dit is je mogelijkheid.

Als eerstejaarsstudent kun je Lonneke benaderen voor allerlei problemen. Of het nu vragen zijn over het kiezen of inplannen van vakken, vragen over je studievoortgang, problemen met een bepaald vak of wil je gewoon even gezellig praten over hoe het gaat; Lonneke is het aanspreekpunt. Uiteraard is iedereen ook van harte uitgenodigd in de Simonkamer om eventuele problemen of vragen te delen. Het Bestuur van Simon Stevin zal er dan voor zorgen dat de juist mensen zich erover gaan buigen!

Rob van der Heijden werkt nog niet zo lang bij onze faculteit. Eerder was hij werkzaam bij de faculteit Biomedische Technologie. Gelukkig is hij afgelopen jaar tot inkeer gekomen en heeft hij de ( juiste) keuze voor onze faculteit gemaakt.

Rob van der Heijden is waarschijnlijk iemand die je vaak rond ziet lopen in het gebouw Gemini, maar persoonlijk niet zo grandioos veel spreekt. Rob is namelijk binnen zijn functie als onderwijscoördinator betrokken bij de planning en organisatie van het onderwijs. Dat betekent dat hij niet vaak colleges geeft of bij begeleide zelfstudies aanwezig is.

Rob heeft zelf de opleiding Biomedische Technologie gevolgd (en ja, hij koos het lidmaatschap bij Prot) aan de voor ons welbekende TU/e. Tussen 1999 en 2005 studeerde hij hier en vanaf 2007 was hij werkzaam bij de faculteit Biomedische Technologie in de functie van coördinator van het Bachelorprogramma. Dit jaar (2018) maakte Rob echter misschien wel de beste beslissing van zijn leven door binnen de faculteit Werktuigbouwkunde aan de slag te gaan in de functie van onderwijscoördinator voor zowel het Bachelor -als het Masterprogramma.

Wist je dat?! Rob van der Heijden redelijk sportief is, hij houdt van hardlopen en fietsen. Verder spendeert hij zijn vrije tijd aan lezen, Netflix kijken en heel erg veel slapen. Herkenbaar toch?

De vraag wie zijn favoriete collega was, bleek ook voor Rob een moeilijke te zijn. Na wat zuchten besloot hij toch dat Marloes de Clercq dit wel moest zijn.

Bij Rob van der Heijden kun je terecht als er vragen zijn over het onderwijs, maar ook voor klachten over specifieke vakken of suggesties om het onderwijs te verbetere. Stuur hem een mailtje of loop even langs zijn kantoor en je vragen en opmerkingen komen op de juiste plek terecht. Uiteraard kunnen we je via Simon Stevin ook in contact brengen met Rob.

Aangezien Rob van der Heijden ook aan onze universiteit gestudeerd heeft (en daarnaast ook een zeer actief student was) kan hij zich vast herkennen in een aantal situaties die voor leden van Simon Stevin ook actueel zijn. Zo heeft Rob zelf een keer tijdens deelname aan de Batavierenrace een frietje gegeten en een biertje gedronken om zeven uur ’s ochtends, net voordat hij ging slapen.

Visiting an oil refinery

In the warm afternoon on May the 7th, a group of around 20 motivated students took the oversized bus to Rotterdam to visit one of the world leading companies in the oil industry: ExxonMobil.

After a warm welcome, some nice beverages and a break from the hot sun, we were kindly welcomed by the Exxon staff and started the day with a presentation about the company. The presentation held all sorts of information about the founding of ExxonMobil, the way in which Exxon is related to other companies, the way in which Exxon is divided into upstream, downstream and chemical sections, working at ExxonMobil and off course a small ‘lubpraatje’.

Marcel Lemmens, part of the offset and utilities section of the company, concluded the session with information about the connection between mechanical engineering and working at Exxon after which we were lead to the business case.

We continued the day with a tour around the site. With thousands of kilometers of pipeline and vast machines working all day and night, the factory had quite an impressive view. Unfortunately, the tour had to be ended early, since the bus we rented was too large to enter the most modern part of the plant, which was still partly under construction. Even though the bus driver was able to get us in all the site’s crazy places thus far, some parts were unfortunately not accessible. And since we weren’t allowed to access the site on foot due to safety reasons, we had come to an end of the day’s tour.

Case The case was called ‘Rupture Disk Investigation’ and represented a real engineering problem from a previous situation on Rotterdam’s site. A situation was sketched in which a safety mechanism for the chemical plant failed, causing a safety hazard for the entire location. The students were told to split up and form groups to give a presentation later on about their view on possible solutions for the problem. After a lot of ‘biems’, catastrophic worst case scenarios and clever solutions, it turned out that a simple spray of paint works wonders in high tech engineering systems. The winners were rewarded with a nice goody bag and all participants got a shiny Exxon Mobil Planga.

Closure of the day We ended the day in the center of Rotterdam, which was, as one might expect, a challenging place to get to with a 50 feet bus.

We sat down at the restaurant called the Bazar and had a lovely Mediterranean meal with nice, approachable conversations with the people who work at ExxonMobil and the people who guided the visit. At the end of the meal a short word of thanks was given from both parties, after which we got in the bus again and prepared ourselves for the journey back to Eindhoven. The trip was a great success, and everyone got their €1,- back in the end.

A Heat Recovery Unit

As a young mechanical system engineer it is a pleasure to work within the Applied Micro Electronics “AME” B.V. environment. Together with a young, dynamic, multidisciplinary and enthusiastic team working on state-of-the-art technology.

Joost Franssen AME is an independent developer and manufacturer of high quality electronic products. The goal is to create innovative products that exceed customer expectations. AME accomplish this by integrating product development and manufacturing and keeping a clear focus on the product and its function. The development of Electronic products at AME require a lot of interaction between electronics, software and mechanics. Despite the name “AME” could put you off the scent, the mechanics is the essential part of product development. The last years this resulted in an excessively growth in mechanical development and production. Examples of application includes amongst others gear trains (for example of e-bikes), high-end touch user interfaces and a touch-free automatic opening smart toilet seat.

One of the largest projects at the moment, is designing and developing a balanced Heat Recovery Unit (HRU) for the ventilation of residential houses. This project includes developing a complete new product with competing performance.

A successful product development consists of a good balance between the stakeholders. It is challenging to make the best choices together with the customer (market, look & feel), operations (manufacturability) and engineering (multidisciplinary). The mechanical design forms a large share of the project. Within the mechanical design new and to AME unknown techniques are implemented in the design. Subjects which require physics insight such as (vibro-)acoustics, aerodynamics and thermodynamics are included.

A Matlab Simulink control algorithm is designed in order to react on temperature, humidity, air quality and frost protection. Also dynamical systems need to be designed, tested and implemented, such as a fan including a scroll fan housing and a bypass system for the summer nights.

Designing the HRU is one part of the project, but prototyping and extensively testing the performance of the unit is another part.

A complete four-meter-high test set-up is designed and build, in order to measure the performance of the prototypes to initiate a quick improvement cycle, before determining the product performance at the official test house. Also prototypes are build and placed in co-worker’s homes to gain insight in the performance of the unit during a real-time winter test.

Three latest prototypes which are delivered to the customer

Currently the first field test products are delivered to the customer. This allows us to start the next phase of the project, the industrialization phase, whereby the mechanics plays an important role. For the production of the unit multiple robot assembly applications are developed, which require specific robot tooling and the use of a vision system.

Concluding, for a mechanical system engineer it is a privilege to be part of this company and be able to develop challenging mechanical solutions for high-end products.

Answer 49.3 In edition 49.4 of the Simon Ster, we had a tricky contest. The question was as follows:

However, if you look at the first sentence in this solution, you can read that the Commissioner of Land Yachting is standing still on the beach. This means that the speed relative to the land yachts does not really matter, since he will always have to wait for the last land yacht to pass. The slowest land yacht is the one driving at 61 km/h, or 16,94 m/s, and since the width of the Commissioner of Land Yachting is negligible, the land yacht just needs to pass his own length of 6,1 meters. This leads to the solution of 6,1/16,94 = 0,36 seconds. Although a lot of people sent in the answer of 0,33 seconds, some of you fortunately did manage to get to the answer of 0,36 seconds.

Out of all the submissions only one can be the final winner. The lucky person to go home with the deluxe record player is Pim van Hees! He can pick up his prize in the Simonkamer.

Contest 49.4 The Commissioner of Land Yachting notices a problem when he arrives on the beach. Two professional land yachters are racing over the beach with a whopping 61 km/h and 19,57 m/s respectively. The first yachter drives to France to buy a baguette for €0,61. The other drives to the exact opposite direction to buy a mitraillette for €6,10 in Brugge. They pass each other where the Commissioner of Land Yachting is standing. Both land yachts are exactly 6,1 meters long.

What is the minimal time the Commissioner of Land yachting has to wait before he can cross the beach?

Now for this contest we have something a little bit different.

The Commissioner of Land Yachting has worked hard last year to improve his skills in programs such as InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop. The last one is probably his favorite and in this contest he will put his skills to the test.

On the page to the right, you can see two pictures. The upper one is the original one and on the one below you can find about the same picture, but with nine minor differences. Can you find them all?

Solution 49.3 Well, imagine yourself that the Commissioner of Land Yachting is standing still on the beach. The two land yachts are coming up from both sides. Logically, you could calculate the time it takes before the land yachts totally pass each other. There are different ways to do it, but you can simplify the problem by seeing one land yacht as standing still and adding up the two velocities to the other. The riding land yacht would get a speed of 19,57 + 61/3,6 = 36,51 m/s and needs to pass twice its length. This results in a time of 12,2/36,51 = 0,33 seconds. And some of you indeed resulted in this answer.
