Editorial Dear reader, The new year has only just begun and to start of the year nicely, you can already read the new Simon Ster!

I hope you all enjoyed the holidays and started of the new year with a good glass of champagne. The first edition of 2018 is all about ‘Rock’; whether it is a ‘rokkostuum’ from the Lustrumgala or dark magic in Rock and Roll, you can find it here!

This edition has a lot to with music and also some stories it has brought with it. It shows that musicians were, and still are, not the most ordinary people out there. However, these talented people give us the music we can’t do without and dance to every once in a while. I hope the stories inspire you but don’t encourage you to do the same, which may not always leads to good results.

Finally, I would like to get back to the beginning of 2018. At the beginning of every year, people always tend to set new goals for the upcoming year. If you did so, good luck! But for the people who don’t have such intentions yet, here are some tips: Meet new people (at a Brasgala), cook something different (like a soup from the KookCie) or work out more (for the Batavierenrace).

Sense and Nonsense in technology high-tech interfaces

Augmented-Reality Instruments & Interfaces Virtual Reality and 360° video peripherals are making its debut in the world of music. Another outgrowth of these technological breakthroughs has been the development of augmented reality technology, that is, virtual images overlaid on physical surroundings so they can be explored within a real-world space.

Synth hardware manufacturer Behringer has now launched an augmented reality interface for their new flagship synthesizer, the DeepMind 12. What’s particularly exciting about this new technology is the potential to begin incorporating augmented reality into the studio space, allowing engineers and producers to truly “see” their mix processes in a previous unthinkable way. With this new technology, the interface of a synthesizer is brought to a whole new level, the sound effects and mixes can fully be noticed and visualized by the player.

Playlists: The Human Element When Pandora, the online music streaming and automated music recommendation service launched in the early 2000s, it revolutionized internet radio with its then unheard-of technology. Built on the back of its founders’ previous endeavour, The Music Genome Project introduced the world to automated algorithmic music selection. This and similar tech would become the backbone of many streaming services’ recommendation features for the next decade and beyond. However, 2017 has seen a marked shift back to the integration of a human element into some aspects of playlist curation. Since Spotify introduced their ‘Discover Weekly’ feature back in 2015, it’s been estimated that around 8,000 artists owed at least half of their streaming plays to the weekly human-curated playlist in 2016. Silicon Valley has taken note, and the practice of bringing back in the human element to automated services both in and outside the music industry has been all the rage

Cashless Concerts?

RFID wristbands have emerged as a staple of major music festivals. Along with the added protection against ticket fraud and other security concerns, the wristbands have begun to incorporate a wider suite of additional features. These often include various ways of capturing audience data points for later analysis and event management iteration, but a big area of interest has been the move to “cashless concerts” and live music experiences.

Research has demonstrated that customers using mobile pay apps via their smartphones for food and drink purchases tend to spend more heavily than they do when pulling cash or a card out of their wallets, and some festivals have begun adding mobile pay features to the RFID chips in their festival wristbands. The next big thing, now that this tech is being increasingly proven in the large-scale festival scene, is exploring how it will scale down to smaller venues. Cashless concerts at your local venues? The wait may be shorter than you think.

“Rewinding” To Old Formats Despite the fact that music consumption via streaming has seen a 76 percent year-over-year increase, international consulting firm Deloitte estimates that vinyl record sales will still comprise about 6 percent of all music industry revenue for 2017. The returning demand for vinyl is thought to be based largely on the desire for a physical good that accompanies or supplements the less tangible experience of streaming music. The bottleneck with vinyl, however, is the higher cost and relatively small number of pressing plants still in operation.

On the flip side of streaming services bringing in humans to displace algorithms as stated in the previous part, robotics and artificial intelligence researchers are starting to pave the way for original music composed entirely by machine. Using deep learning algorithms and big data analysis techniques, Ph.D. researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology have built a marimba-playing robot that is capable of devising and performing original melodies and song structures, including complete multi-part harmonies and chord progressions. The robot, Shimon, is the result of nearly a decade of research.

The researchers fed the robot with nearly 5000 complete songs, from Beethoven to the Beatles to Lady Gaga to Miles Davis. On top of that, more than 2 million motifs, riffs and licks of music were also fed to the robot. Aside from giving the machine a seed, or the first four measures to use as a starting point, no humans are involved in either the composition or the performance of the music. Once Shimon learns the four measures he is provided, it creates its own sequence of concepts and composes its ‘own piece’.

This is a leap in Shimon’s musical quality because it is using deep learning to create a more structured and coherent composition. The next goal is to explore whether robots could become musically creative and generate new music that we humans could find beautiful, inspiring and strange. The compositions Shimon can produce now sound like a fusion of jazz and classical.

The solution that has presented itself is perhaps even more unlikely than the resurgence of vinyl: the rebirth of the cassette tape! The format still has a long way to go before it will compete with vinyl’s current sales numbers (which could top 40 million units this year), but the cassette format did see a 74 percent increase during 2016, according to Nielsen’s year-end report.

The road to Le Mans

Pushing the automotive industry with innovative technologies by participating in one of the most prestigious motorsport events of all times: the 24 Hours of Le Mans. InMotion will be the first student team ever to compete. And not with just a regular car, but with a fully electric race car!

Our participant to-be, the IM01, will be the race car of the future.

We are well proceeding with the design of this vehicle, and we have already reached a big milestone: The IM/e. This car is the fastest electric formula car, having pulverized both the lap record on Circuit Zandvoort and Circuit Zolder!

With many more great results to come, we keep improving upon the IM/e and start engineering on the IM01; The Road to Le Mans pursues.

IM01: The race car of the future Our renderings of the IM01’s incredible aerodynamic bodywork are a great way to understand this cutting-edge project. To build an electric endurance vehicle, our ambitious engineers must consider every little detail. Designing our future Le Mans participant is not an easy task. One must take into account space, safety, efficiency, and much more!

The IM01 will have active independent spoilers at each of the four corners of the car optimised by an innovative active suspension system during cornering, braking and acceleration. Simulations of the IM01 in Simulink, Siemens NX, and ANSYS will constantly be improved to give the most realistic result. Validating these models will be done using the IM/e.

Garage Work The IM/e was not built by just thinking about it. Besides simulations and theoretical stuff, there is also a lot going on in our garage! Assembling and keep maintaining this car is practical work you just don’t do daily as a student. Practical work such as renewing the brake systems is perfect to see how components work in practice!

Keeping innovating along the road Now that the IM/e is fully working, it is time to start engineering the IM01 in more detail. If we have new ideas, we implement them first in the IM/e and subsequently we can learn how we can design the IM01 further.

A great example is our torque vectoring implementation; A technique which helps the car to be faster in corners especially.

By sending different torque levels to each of the four wheels it is ensured that each wheel will deliver maximum power.

A new implementation starts with making models and simulations first. After that is done, the IM/e hits the circuit and we extract data to validate our models. From the models and data we can learn a lot. All the knowledge and experience we gain through the IM/e will help us building the ideal Le Mans participant.

Implementing a new technology from zero is a challenging job, but that’s also where it gets interesting. After modelling and simulating for weeks, it is amazing to see the car drive with 246 km/h!

Automotive, the driving technology

After experiencing the most breathtaking moments in your study, one moment will rise that you, as a young professional, will have to move yourself towards the slippery slopes of the unknown job market.

Marco Lenssen Years ago, an event was created in order to reduce the mysterious gap between your student life and the life as an employee or employer. This annual event is the number one place to connect with the first companies in different areas of expertise. The event I’m talking about is of course the symposium. It is THE place to gain knowledge about sectors which might be of interest for you as a mechanical engineering student. The best part of it, the registrations will open again soon!

After years of successes and magical moments it’s impossible to think of a Simon Stevin without this annual event. Each year several fascinating companies come over and tell about their newest and brightest innovations in order to motivate and inform the bright young talented students of our association. After previous great editions of the event such as: ‘Ocean of Engineering’, ‘Aviation, high level engineering’, and ‘Security, a lifesaving industry’, it’s time to explore the most iconic vehicles in our society. This year’s event will be entirely marked by the transportation industry as the theme of this year’s symposium will be: ‘Automotive, the driving technology’.

Automotive branches Most magazines have a little downside, the information is sometimes a bit outdated. In the period between the writing and publishing of this article, a lot of things will have changed. To keep up to date with the latest news about the symposium we invite you to take a look at our website, simonstev.in/symposium, or to check out the Facebook event. Through these media we will keep you up to date with our regular posts. But enough about things we don’t know yet, there are plenty of things we do know.

For example, which branches, do we think, are interesting enough to invite.

While looking at a car some of the parts immediately stand out, such as the motor, the body, tires and suspension. After powering up the vehicle some other parts stand out, i.e. is it a combustion engine or electric vehicle? What kind of transmission made this kind of torque possible? And at last the invisible parts of a car, such as aerodynamics or control systems. There is way more engineering needed for a simple car to function as it does then we expect. Therefore, the committee made a selection of six different branches which we think are interesting to share in this article to get you enthusiastic!

A lot is changing within the contemporary street scenery. The automotive sector is one of the most booming sectors nowadays.

Just a little while ago it was okay to have a nice black cloud hanging from the back of your car while accelerating. While nowadays we are implementing the newest futuristic technologies and busy with replacing every combustion engine with an electric motor.

Furthermore, we are engaged with vehicles that can drive without any input from A to B in a fast and safe pace. These innovations, and a lot more of the latest developments will be discussed during the different pitches and lectures given during the day. To show you, as a well-educated and enthusiastic student, what is possible to achieve with your education.

But luckily there will already be some fun and interesting things going on before subscriptions open on our Facebook page, so if you still haven’t done it now, put down this magazine and go to your most visited website and follow the event! Furthermore some nice promotional activities will take place during the week that the subscriptions open. For example you can find some racing simulators int the hall of Gemini-Zuid where you can show everybody that you are the fastest Mechanical Engineer. Everyone can drive a lap, but make sure you practice a bit because we will raffle a cool prize amongst all competitors.

Symposium 2018

The day will start off with a short talk by the chairman of the day, after which several lectures and pitches will be given by companies. This will be followed by a lunch break and a small career expo. In the afternoon, everyone will do a business case.

“Ik heb altijd een gitaar op iemands hoofd kapot willen slaan, dat gaat simpelweg niet met een piano” – Elton John

Iconische gitaarhelden als Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, David Gilmour en Keith Richards. Allemaal hebben ze legendarische muziekstukken gecreëerd, ieder met een eigen gitaar en herkenbare sound: ‘Blackie’ van Eric Clapton of Kurt Cobain zijn ‘Jag-Stang’.

Een gitaar is vaak meer dan een instrument, het typeert de artiest en verteld in sommige gevallen zelfs een verhaal. De een valt voor het warme geluid van een semi-akoestische Gibson en de ander voor de scherpere tonen van een puntige flying V Ibanez gitaar. Soms is één hals niet genoeg en is er een gitaar met dubbele nek nodig om ‘Stairway to Heaven’ te creëren.

Tim Jansen Met slechts drie slagen op zijn gitaar heeft Angus Young het voor elkaar gekregen om duizenden feestende mensen nog altijd te laten springen. Ondanks de eenvoud van de akkoorden, is het toch de unieke sound van de gitaar samen met de effecten die het nummer maakt. Echter is voor veel mensen ook het schooluniform, het kenmerkende Chuck-Berry-loopje, en vooral de kersrode duivelse gibson SG gitaar van Angus Young, datgene wat als eerste te binnen schiet bij het horen van ‘Highway to hell’. Zo

zijn er meerdere legendarische gitaren bekend in de rockwereld.

Wat voor verhaal schuilt er achter deze iconische gitaren?

Achter de historische tonen die sommige artiesten met hun gitaren hebben gemaakt, zit vaak een groter verhaal. Een gitaar is niet zomaar een gitaar en ik raad dan ook aan nooit zomaar je gitaar te verkopen. Zo neem ikzelf mijn eerste klassieke gitaar nog altijd mee op reis en brengen de deuken en krassen goede herinneringen op. Het is toch geen tweedehands bank!

Frankenstein De solo van ‘Beat it’ van Michael Jackson is er een die over de hele wereld wordt herkend en erkend, behalve door sommige Guitar Hero-fanaten. In werkelijkheid is dit stuk ingespeeld door de Nijmeegse Eddie van Halen met zijn gitaar genaamd ‘Frankenstein‘ of ‘frankenstrat’. De unieke sound die ook terugkomt in bekende nummers als ‘Jump’ en ‘hot for teacher’, komt allemaal uit dit impulsieve beunproject. Deze herkenbare rode gitaar met zwarte en witte strepen is een poging geweest om de sounds van Gibson en Fender te combineren. Van Halen hield niet van kant-en-klare gitaren. Hij wilde zijn eigen sound creëren door vier verschillende elementen te combineren, vandaar ook de naam Frankenstein.

Met een tweedehands gitaarbody en nek, draden die uitsteken, Feloranje reflectoren en een dollarmunt uit 1971 heeft hij een voor slechts $130 een van de meest herkenbare gitaren gemaakt.

Er bestaan tegenwoordig driehonderd replica’s die voor meer dan €15.000 verkocht worden. Van Halen heeft hierna nog pogingen gewaagd betere gitaren te maken waaronder de geel-zwarte ‘Bumblebee’. Echter hebben deze gitaren het succes niet gehaald en is er uiteindelijk gekozen voor een optimalisatie van de Frankenstein, ‘Frankenstein 2’!

Trigger Spannende muziek, een lichtshow, rookmachines... Dit zijn typisch effecten die gebruikt worden om een groot publiek enthousiast te krijgen voor een optreden. Bij country-artiest Willie Nelson was dit niet nodig. Hij hoefde slechts vijf minuten voor het optreden zijn gitaar ‘Trigger’ op het podium te zetten om het hele publiek te laten springen en applaudisseren.

Nelson werkte voor zijn succes als artiest voor een platenlabel, waar hij geld kreeg om verschillende soorten gitaren te gebruiken en testen. Zo kreeg hij voor een concert in 1969 een van de eerste akoestisch-elektrische gitaren, die vrij kort daarna gesloopt werd door een dronken man die erop ging staan. Het pickup element dat de gitaar versterkte, heeft hij echter behouden en in een klassieke gitaar geplaatst. Deze Martin N-20 gitaar vernoemde hij naar het paard ‘Trigger’ van Roy Rogers, een van de bekendste western-acteurs. Door het harde aanslaan van zijn gitaar zit er een groot gat in de body van de gitaar en zijn overal deuken te zien. Hij heeft allerlei artiesten en vrienden zijn gitaar laten signeren door erop te schrijven of erin te krassen. Deze gitaar verteld zijn levensverhaal. Nelson had altijd maar één eis aan zijn reparateur, zorg dat die blijft werken maar vernieuw niets. Na meer dan 40 jaar gebruik speelt hij nog steeds op zijn gitaar Trigger in Texas; “As long as Trigger is going, I will keep on going”.

Haardvuur Bohemian Rhapsody is een hit die sinds 1984 bijna elk jaar op de eerste plek staat van beste nummers allertijden.

Hierin mogen de gitaarsolo’s gespeeld door Brian May op zijn ‘Fireplace’ (ook wel ‘Red Special’ genoemd) zeker niet ontbreken. In zijn tienerjaren werd Brian May geïnspireerd door Jeff Beck die zijn gitaar voor zijn versterker liet zweven en hierdoor allerlei nieuwe geluiden produceerde. Brian wilde een gitaar die tijdens het spelen ook interactie had met alles eromheen. Samen met zijn vader heeft hij van alledaagse materialen een gitaar met ingebouwde effecten gemaakt voor 16 pond. Zo gebruikte ze oude breinaalden en veren van de kleppen van een motorfiets om de tremolo mee te maken.

De hals is gemaakt van een stuk mahoniehout uit een honderd jaar oude haard, vandaar ook de naam. Deze gitaar heeft de reis van de eerste hit ‘Killer Queen’ tot de laatste keer ‘Mother love’ met Freddie Mercury meegemaakt. Hierna heeft May met zijn gitaar nog vele nummers geschreven en optredens gehad. Om de 50ste verjaardag van de gitaar te vieren heeft hij er zelfs een boek over geschreven, ‘Brian May’s Red Special: The story of the home-made guitar that rocked Queen and the world’.

Vlammen Naast gitaren die een lang verleden hebben, zijn er ook gitaren die het verhaal kort houden. Ondanks dat het een eer was om een gitaar voor Jimi Hendrix te maken, kon die gitaar een kort levensbestaan hebben.

De stemming van Jimi bepaalde of de gitaar tijdens het eerste concert al op de grond kapot geslagen werd. Om het publiek nog meer te shockeren en zijn nieuwe single ‘Fire’ te promoten, besloot hij een gitaar op het podium zogenaamd op te offeren door hem in brand te steken. Dit koste hem een aantal brandblaren waardoor hij besloot hier geen gewoonte van te maken. De originele gitaar, een Fender Stratocaster, is uiteindelijk op een veiling verkocht voor meer dan 450.000 dollar. Een flink bedrag voor een restant van Jimi’s vuurshow.

Legendarisch blues artiest B.B. King heeft in plaats van zijn gitaar aan te steken zijn eerste Gibson gered uit een brandend café. Hij heeft deze gitaar vernoemd naar ‘Lucille’, de vrouw waar twee mannen ruzie om maakten wat volgde in een vlammenzee door het omstoten van een vat benzine. Alle gitaren hierna gaf hij dezelfde naam om mensen eraan te herinneren nooit te vechten om een vrouw of een brand café in te rennen voor een gitaar, levensgevaarlijk!

Hobbelen!

Hoort het rennen van de Batavierenrace op je bucketlist te staan?

Hoe pak je het verstandig aan?

Olaf van Buul, gediplomeerd hardlooptrainer De eerste vraag kan ik eenvoudig beantwoorden. In april 2016 kreeg ik namelijk een mailtje van Victor Tanke met daarin de vraag of ik interesse had om mee te doen aan de Batavierenrace. Door een aantal afmeldingen was er een startplek vrij. Helaas kon ik door een hardnekkige blessure niet meelopen en dit jaar is dat jammer genoeg weer het geval. Ik heb nog maar één kans: in 2019. Dus mijn antwoord is ondubbelzinnig: Ja, het rennen van de Batavierenrace staat in elk geval op MIJN bucketlist.

Het antwoord op de tweede vraag is uitgebreider. De Batavierenrace is natuurlijk een enorm studentenfestijn en het mooie ervan is dat vrijwel iedere (blessurevrije) student(e) er aan mee kan doen. De te lopen afstanden liggen tussen 4 en 10.5 kilometer. Dergelijke afstanden hoeven voor bijna niemand een probleem te vormen.

Als je wat tijd in trainingsarbeid investeert, kun je ze met plezier lopen en ben je na afloop nog fit genoeg om te feesten.

Als je mee wilt doen, maar niet goed weet hoe je moet gaan trainen, google dan: ‘trainingsschema 30 min.’ Dat levert al gauw 6 verschillende trainingsschema’s op. Bij de grote leveranciers van hardloopspullen kun je ook zoeken naar schema’s. Hetzelfde kun je doen bij een hardloopwinkelketen. De duur van programma’s varieert tussen de 12 en 16 weken. Ook de inhoud verschilt: bij het ene schema begin je met 40 minuten wandelen, bij het andere

start je meteen met een duurloop. Dat wil echter niet zeggen dat er een “verkeerd” trainingsschema tussen zit.

Dat trainingsschema’s gebaseerd zijn op een periode van 12 tot 16 weken, heeft met fysiologie te maken. In een dergelijke periode kun je de energieleverantie van je spieren en de aanpassingen van hart en longen goed opbouwen. Een tijdsbestek van 12 tot 16 weken is ook “veilig”. Een relatief rustige opbouw zorgt er namelijk voor dat er geen blessures ontstaan en dat er een basis wordt gelegd om verder te trainen voor eventueel een grotere afstand. Het versterken van gewrichten en pezen gaat namelijk veel langzamer.

Daarom kun je problemen krijgen aan pezen en gewrichten als je in een korte tijd snel het aantal te lopen kilometers opvoert.

Er zullen ongetwijfeld genoeg studenten zijn, die gedurende vier weken één keer per week trainen en toch zonder een centje pijn kunnen knallen op de Batavierenrace, maar dit heeft volgens mij meer met talent, juiste genen en/of geluk te maken, dan met een verstandig trainingsschema.

Schema’s op het internet zijn altijd voor de gemiddelde persoon, met een gemiddelde trainingsbelastbaarheid. Het vereiste beginniveau van de atleet maakt bij de schema’s vaak het verschil.

Studenten hebben het voordeel dat ze rond de 20 zijn en daardoor goed belastbaar zijn. Ze kunnen dus de trainingen fysiek aan. Ik

heb met een hardlooptrainers oog de diverse schema’s bekeken en zal adviezen geven over het kiezen van het juiste schema voor zowel de echte beginners, als voor degenen die al wat meer gevorderd zijn.

Eerst iets over trainingsleer Er zijn namelijk een aantal basiswetten: overload, reversibiliteit, specificiteit en de wet van verminderde meeropbrengst.

Overload Je moet een training doen om beter te worden. Na een training gaat eerst je niveau omlaag (herstelfase) en daarna komt het boven het oorspronkelijke niveau uit om daarna weer naar de oorspronkelijke situatie te dalen. Met trainingen op het juiste moment word je beter . Trainingen op het verkeerde moment maken je slechter.

Reversibiliteit Alles gaat uiteindelijk (langzaam) terug naar het oorspronkelijke basisniveau. Dus als het na een training lang duurt voor je opnieuw traint, ben je weer terug op het basisniveau.

Specificiteit Datgene wat je traint wordt beter. Dus als je je armen traint, worden die armen beter, maar je benen niet. Het hart/longensysteem echter, wordt door verschillende sporten getraind. Wielrennen en roeien bijvoorbeeld, geven je een goede motor, maar de benen worden niet specifiek op hardlopen getraind en deze sporters hebben een grotere kans op hardloopblessures.

meestal niet vermeld, dat iedere vierde week een “fun” week moet zijn. Gewoon een weekje rustig aan met minder minuten dan de voorafgaande week. Een nadeel is dat je waarschijnlijk niet op 30 minuten uitkomt na 12 weken. Als je een absolute beginner bent en je vindt drie keer per week trainen wel erg veel, dan is twee keer per week een training ook een mogelijkheid, maar je moet er geen wonderen van verwachten.

Ieder schema moet gezien worden als leidraad: je mag er van afwijken als het je beter uitkomt, maar 80-90% van de trainingen moeten toch wel gedaan worden om tot het resultaat te komen.

Belangrijk voor beginners is dat ze geen gemiste trainingen inhalen en nooit twee dagen achter elkaar lopen. Een rustdag na een training is belangrijk voor het herstel van de beginnende lopers ( juiste overload).

Wanneer zijn trainingen te zwaar? Dat kun je het beste vaststellen als je de ochtend na de training uit je bed komt. Je mag wel een beetje stijf zijn, maar als er spierpijn aan te pas komt, moet je opletten. Als je die na de volgende trainingen ook voelt, moet je wat minderen of op het zelfde niveau blijven trainen. Je overload is dan verkeerd. Als je zo 12 weken getraind hebt, kun je makkelijk een korte of misschien zelfs een langere etappe lopen bij de Batavierenrace. Je bent dan waarschijnlijk beter voorbereid dan 70% van alle deelnemers.

Het enige wat je bij hardlopen nodig hebt, zijn hardloopschoenen en een stopwatch. Tegenwoordig kun je je stopwatch echter beter

De wet van verminderde meeropbrengst Naarmate je beter wordt, worden de stappen van vooruitgang kleiner worden. Echter, iedereen reageert anders op deze wetten.

Beginners die niet aan sport doen (die na twee tot vijf minuten hardlopen buiten adem zijn) raad ik aan een schema te kiezen dat met wandelen begint, of met minuutjes. Minuut hardlopen, minuut wandelen en dit langzaam opbouwen zoals deze: https://www.runnersweb.nl/schema/beginnersschema-1.htm Zoek ook een loopmaatje, dit verhoogt de motivatie. Bovendien kun je elkaar in de gaten houden, zodat je niet te snel gaat lopen.

vervangen door een mobieltje met een hardloop app. Dat is erg handig omdat afstanden en snelheden worden bijgehouden, wat erg motiverend kan werken. Als je in de schemering gaat lopen, is het wel verstandig een reflectiehesje te dragen. Nog beter zijn LED-armbanden, die je zichtbaarheid en dus je veiligheid in het donker vergroten.

Een valkuil voor beginners is dat ze te snel (willen) lopen. Beginners kunnen niet langzaam genoeg lopen! Als je vindt dat dat langzame niet bij je past, train dan één keer per week een sneller tempo en houd de overige trainingen rustig. Kreten zoals “Pijn is fijn” en “Bloed moet” horen niet bij een startschema. Als het hardlopen toch te zwaar wordt, mag wandelen altijd. Probeer wel aan het totale aantal (hardloop)minuten te komen door de intervallen dan in kortere tijden op te delen. Gewoon stoppen als het echt niet meer gaat, is natuurlijk ook altijd een optie. In de schema’s staat

Hardlopen is een belastende sport voor pezen en gewrichten. Zoals al eerder gezegd, worden deze langzamer sterk dan de spieren die ze aansturen. Het verschil ligt in de orde van grootte van 3 tot 6 maanden. De meest voorkomende beginnersblessure is shin splints: pijn aan de binnenzijde van het scheenbeen. Oorzaken kunnen zijn: te veel op harde ondergrond lopen, te veel lopen op een aflopende weg (dwars op de looprichting) en lopen op slechte of versleten hardloopschoenen. De meest voorkomende oorzaak is echter het te snel opvoeren van het aantal kilometers. Als je

last krijgt van deze blessure moet je je trainingsarbeid halveren en kijken of de pijn dan wegblijft. Is dat niet het geval, neem dan circa twee weken rust en begin daarna opnieuw met hardlopen.

Wat ook vaak voorkomt maar meer een ongemak in plaats van een blessure is steken in de zij. Dit is heel vervelend, het enige is wat je kunt is wat langzamer lopen totdat het minder pijn doet. Na een aantal trainingen verdwijnt dit bij de meeste lopers.

Studenten die regelmatig aan zaalsport of voetbal doen, kunnen een schema kiezen dat op een hoger niveau begint , bijvoorbeeld met lopen van intervallen van 5 minuten en dit 4-6 keer herhalen.

Ook kunnen ze al beginnen met een langere duurloop in het schema. Deze studenten kunnen kiezen voor twee verschillende tempo’s, een langzaam tempo voor de duurlopen en een iets sneller tempo voor de intervallen. Deze studenten lopen echter het grootste gevaar op blessures. Hun hart/longen zijn weliswaar

Het schema (Tabel 2) zelf is progressief, de duur van de intervallen en/of totale trainingstijd neemt altijd toe. Er is geen ruimte voor een “fun” week tussendoor. Ik zelf zou er niet voor kiezen 3 keer per week dezelfde training te doen. Ik zou er één op deze manier doen en bij de overige trainingen de tijden van de intervallen wat korter maken, maar wel het volledige aantal minuten doen. Een andere optie is in de overige trainingen de pauzes wat langer maken. Of je kunt de totale trainingsduur en de intervallen wat korter maken en de snelheid hoger. Afhankelijk van je conditie moet je er rekening mee houden dat vanaf week 4-6 in dit schema wel forse stappen worden gezet qua belastbaarheid. Als deze stappen te groot voor je zijn, bedenk dan dat een schema een leidraad is. Het kan altiid aangepast worden aan jouw omstandigheden. Als voorbereiding op de wedstrijd zou ik het een week rustiger aan doen of in die week alleen de wedstrijd lopen.

Kort advies aan beginners

Maak tijd vrij om te trainen. Maak een plan en probeer je er aan te houden. Probeer minimaal twee keer per week te lopen. Je gaat echter wel sneller vooruit als je drie keer per week traint, dit verschil merk je al, na vier weken training. Er mag ook wel eens een week tussen zitten waarin je maar één keer traint, maar dan moet je wel je verwachtingen en tempo’s aanpassen.

Een valkuil voor beginners is, dat de meesten snel voelen dat ze beter worden doordat hart en longen zich gauw aanpassen aan de inspanningen, maar dat ze zich niet realiseren dat de aanpassing van pezen en gewrichten veel langzamer verloopt. Houd daar dus rekening mee.

En tenslotte - heel belangrijk - denk aan je veiligheid in het verkeer tijdens het hardlopen!!! goed ontwikkeld door de ander sporten, maar ze hebben niet de specifieke trainingen gedaan om de pezen en gewrichten sterker maken voor het hardlopen (specificiteit). Voor hen geldt hetzelfde als voor de beginners: kies een schema, bouw rustig op en neem ieder derde/vierde week een relatieve rustweek.

Hieronder staat een schema van Runner’s. Bij een schema horen doelstellingen en randvoorwaarden (Tabel 1), die zijn hier gegeven.

Een ingangstest ontbreekt echter, je moet dus zelf bepalen of je met het schema kunt beginnen. Bij dit schema zou je al in staat moeten zijn 10-15 minuten onafgebroken hard te lopen. Het aantal trainingen is met 4 wel aan de hoge kant, 3 is een goede keuze.

Kort advies aan sportieve studenten Voor jou gelden dezelfde adviezen als die aan de beginners (zie daar), maar zorg er voor dat je tijdens de trainingsweken in tempo’s varieert. Je bent meer blessuregevoelig dan een beginner, omdat je harder kunt lopen want je hart/longen zijn voor jou geen remmende factoren zoals dat bij beginners het geval is. Daardoor ben je misschien geneigd harder en langer te gaan lopen dan voor je pezen en gewrichten verantwoord is.

Het meest belangrijke bij de keuze van een schema is dat je naar jezelf kijkt en analyseert wat je beginconditie is. Ook is het van belang of je al vaker aan sport hebt gedaan. “Het is de hoogste wijsheid soms een dwaas te spelen.”

Het is gesneden koek dat de filosofen uit de klassieke oudheid van grote invloed zijn geweest op het huidige denken in de Westerse maatschappij. Desalniettemin hebben deze denkwijzen zich niet in een rechte lijn ontwikkeld. In de Middeleeuwen werd er tijdelijk meer belang gehecht aan het verbranden van heksen, elkaar de schedel inslaan en het verkopen van plekjes in de hemel. Een sleutelfiguur in het oppakken van de wijsbegeerte, na deze terugval, is een Nederlander geweest: Desiderius Erasmus.

Bas Raes De Erasmusbrug, de Erasmusuniversiteiten het ERASMUS-uitwisselingsprogramma: een greep uit de gebouwen en instanties die zijn vernoemd naar deze filosoof die op de vijfde plaats eindigde in de verkiezing van de Grootste Nederlander en tegelijkertijd elfde werd in de verkiezing van Grootste Belg. Het moge duidelijk zijn dat we hier te maken hebben met één van de invloedrijkste personen uit de vaderlandse geschiedenis.

Levenswandel Dat lag niet in de lijn der verwachting toen Erasmus omstreeks 1469 werd geboren als bastaardzoon van een priester en een vrouw van eenvoudige komaf. In die tijd betekende dat er maar een optie bestond voor je studiekeuze: theologie om daarna monnik te worden. Dat was ook precies wat er gebeurde en door zijn voogd werd hij naar de Latijnse school in Deventer gestuurd.

De stad Deventer zal niet direct de associatie oproepen met sensationele gebeurtenissen, maar dat was ook niet het doel van de school. In plaats daarvan was de school een van de vaandeldragers van de ‘moderne devotie’, een stroming waarin de gewone mens centraal staat en het authentieke christelijke leven nastreeft. Een andere belangrijke factor was de rector die Grieks in het curriculum introduceerde en vooruitstrevende sprekers uitnodigde. Zijn kennis van klassieke talen stelde hem in staat onderzoek te doen in de oudste geschriften van het Christendom en de ideeën van deze school mistten hun uitwerking niet op de latere ideeën van Erasmus.

Een uitbraak van de pest – met de dood van zijn ouders tot gevolg – maakte een einde aan zijn schoolopleiding en Erasmus kwam in een klooster in Gouda terecht. Hoewel hij daar uiteindelijk tot priester werd gewijd sterkte deze tijd zijn overtuiging dat de kerk te ver was afgedwaald van de essentie (het leven van Christus) en vastzat in dogma’s. In latere jaren onthield hij zich er dan ook niet van om de katholieke kerk regelmatig op de hak te nemen. Al in die tijd viel Erasmus’ buitengewone kennis op en als secretaris van een bisschop was hij in staat om het kloosterleven te ontsnappen en te studeren in Parijs, Londen en Leuven. Allemaal universiteitssteden waar Erasmus in contact kwam met geleerden en zich op intellectueel niveau ontwikkelde. Het maakt Erasmus tot een van de meest bereisde en geleerdste personen van zijn tijd.

Zelfs het werk van de kerk zelf is niet veilig voor Erasmus; bij het lezen van de evangeliën in de oorspronkelijke taal komt hij tot het inzicht dat de officiële kerkvertaling, de Vulgata, op verscheidene punten niet overeenkomt. Erasmus kom met een eigen vertaling, genaamd Novum Instrumentum, waarmee hij andere mensen ook de kans geeft om dit in te zien. Tegelijkertijd maakte hij zich ook sterk voor een andere benadering van de bijbel. Niet alleen geestelijken zouden deze moeten bestuderen; ook boeren, wevers en zelfs vrouwen (heikel punt in die tijd) zouden de bijbel moeten lezen.

Om zijn humanistische gedachtegoed verder over te brengen, geeft hij meerdere boeken uit zoals de Adagia waarin hij lezers aan de hand van spreekwoorden uitleg geeft over het humanisme. Erasmus’ ‘Colloquia’ uit 1518 viel bij veel volgelingen in de smaak en maakte hem tot een bekendheid in heel Europa. Zijn bekendste werk is echter een satirische aanklacht tegen de maatschappij, waarbij vooral de kerk het moet ontgelden. De Lof der Zotheid wordt zo populair dat Erasmus praktisch als eerste schrijver kan leven van de pen. Met de verkoop van zijn geschriften en het occasioneel onderwijzen van jonge edellieden kon Erasmus het zich veroorloven om tot aan zijn dood Europa door te reizen.

Reformatie

Het leidde ertoe dat Erasmus één van de belangrijkste filosofen van de Renaissance werd en zelfs een stroming in de filosofie aan hem wordt toegeschreven: het humanisme. Centraal in deze filosofie is menselijke waardigheid en vrijheid van de eigen wil. Hij breekt met de ernst die zo kenmerkend is voor de Middeleeuwen en bepleit een levenshouding zonder dogma’s: niets is namelijk zeker in het leven, en dat ontkennen is ijdelheid en hoogmoed.

De eigenschappen van de ware mens waren volgens Erasmus: evenwichtigheid, mildheid, verdraagzaamheid en eerlijkheid. Hij had felle kritiek op de kerk van zijn tijd, omdat de kerk geen oog had voor de vier christelijke deugden die hij zo belangrijk vond.

De tijd waarin Erasmus leefde, het begin van de Renaissance, was een turbulente tijd, uitermate geschikt voor een invloedrijk denker. Na honderden jaren van betrekkelijke stilstand zorgde de boekdrukkunst, de ontdekking van Amerika en de hernieuwde interesse voor de Klassieke Tijd ervoor dat de aloude macht van de kerk begon te tanen. Met zijn kritiek op de katholieke Kerk maakte Erasmus zich niet bepaald geliefd in geestelijke kringen, maar hij stond hier zeker niet alleen in.

Op 31 oktober 1517 spijkerde Maarten Luther zijn 95 stellingen op de deur van de kerk in Wittenberg, daarmee het startschot gevend voor wat uiteindelijk het Protestantisme is geworden. Vast staat dat Luther zich heeft laten inspireren door de ideeën van Erasmus en er door critici werd dikwijls gezegd: Luther broedde de eieren uit die Erasmus had gelegd.

Hoewel Erasmus zich in principe kon vinden in de redenen van Luther, wilde hij het niet laten komen tot een scheuring in de kerk.

Als humanist vond hij vredelievendheid en relativering een groot goed en dus pleitte hij voor tolerantie tussen de verschillende opvattingen. Het leidde er zelfs toe dat Erasmus de pen oppakte tégen Luther, maar ondanks zijn invloed mocht dit pleidooi niet baten; de tijden van godsdienstoorlogen waren aangebroken.

Tijdens zijn reizen komt hij in contact met het laatste puzzelstukje dat nodig is om zijn ideeën op grote schaal te verspreiden: de net uitgevonden drukpers. Hoewel Erasmus begint met het uitgeven van commentaren op het werk van bevriende geleerden, laat hij zich al snel zelf gelden. Zijn verder geperfectioneerde kennis van het Grieks en Latijn stelt hem in staat oude werken opnieuw te vertalen. Daarnaast publiceert hij etiquetteboeken, vorstenspiegels en traktaten die heersers en burgers moesten opvoeden tot wijze en verantwoordelijke christenen.

Helemaal onverdienstelijk was Erasmus niet: Het moge duidelijk zijn; Erasmus is de grondlegger voor de tolerantiegedachte die we tot vandaag de dag terugzien in Nederland. Wat opvalt is dat het voor Erasmus bij de tolerantie niet zozeer om de vrijheid voor de enkeling ging (voor Joden wees Erasmus die zelfs af), maar meer om de vrijheid van wetenschap en ideeën. Het moderne tolerantiebegrip (vrijheid voor de enkeling) is bij Erasmus niet te vinden.

Een rustige, sobere devotie, voortkomend uit innerlijke bezinning, dat was zijn ideaal.

Rock and Roll, The Devils Music Led Zeppelin’s notorious mythic and occult connections

Has any band inspired as much myth and misinformation as Led Zeppelin? Before the internet, there was not a lot of information available about rock stars. Fans (including legions of stoned, Zeppelin-obsessed teenagers) filled the void with rumors and wild stories. A handful of stories were about Jimmy Page, the guitarist of the band, and his interest in dark magic. They never talked much about it with the press, but here are some wizardly tales concerning Led Zeppelin.

This English band that burst on the music scene in 1969 and quit around 1980, was known for the mysterious vibes and crazy stories about its members. The band toured a lot in America where they broke through and really made a name for themselves in the underground scene. Remarkably enough, they did not receive any approval from respected music critics for the most part of their careers. The band initiated something that Jimmy Page called, ‘album-oriented rock’. Led zeppelin refused to release famous singles such as Stairway to Heaven. Today the band is a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and they even met former President of the United States, Barack Obama, who held a tribute speech for the four Englishmen at the Kennedy Center Honors ceremony in 2012.

Aleister Crowley (1875-1947) was a British poet, novelist, mountaineer and occultist. He identified himself as a prophet in his self-founded religion ‘Thelema’. This man had a notorious record and was called ‘The wickedest man in the world’ for his Satanic rituals etc.

It was rumored that Page had an obsession for black magic and in particular for the pieces Crowley wrote. The claims about Page’s obscure magic practices were no lie. For example, Page had the original vinyl releases of the band’s third album inscribed with quotes that referred to Crowley’s work. Furthermore, a groupie once played the recording of Stairway to Heaven backwards and claimed to hear Satanic messages in a particular part of the song.

The rumor was spread that Page and Robert Plant, the singer of the band, did this on purpose, but the band always denied and called it a crazy coincidence.

It is confirmed that Page possesses one of the largest collections of Crowley’s original works. Page even went on and bought a house that used to belong to Mr. Crowley in Loch Ness, Scotland.

Crowley performed all kinds of crazy stuff there and the place was known for being haunted. Eventually, the house creeped Page out so much that he left the house. Funny thing, the house was burned down by a big natural fire sometime later.

considered commercial suicide and their record label was, to put it nicely, majorly irritated.

Eventually the album became one of the best-selling albums of all time with more than 37 million copies sold. Writers and critics have come around and regularly cited it on lists of the greatest albums of all time.

More backwards played records Led Zeppelin is not the only band that hid messages in their work.

The Beatles were also suspected of hiding backwards verses and mumbled lines. There is one Beatles-theory which says that Paul McCartney died halfway through the Beatles’ career and that he was replaced by a doppelganger. There is also a theory for who killed him: John Lennon. One of the reasons that some people believed this is hidden in one of their hits: Strawberry Fields Forever. When the record is played backwards, one can hear John Lennon mumbling something at the end of the song: ‘I buried Paul’. In an interview Lennon said he actually said ‘cranberry sauce’, which makes even less sense.

The curse of Zeppelin Some groupies suspected the whole band of making a Faustian deal with the devil: their souls for their uncomprehensive musical capability and stardom. This might seem ridiculous, but years later the saying did make for an appropriate metaphor… It was said that the devil cursed three of the four members of the band, just like he had cursed Faust. Plant and his family were involved in a serious car crash in ’75. Consequently, Plant had trouble walking for some time. Also, Plant lost his 6 aged son to an unidentified stomach virus. Page almost died of a heroin addiction and drummer John Bonham died early from alcohol poisoning.

Unusual lyrics Plant did write some crazy lyrics for Zep’s songs back in the day. Just like Page had his obsession, Plant had some of his own, namely The Lord of the Rings and Vikings. For example, the lyrics of two of the band’s most well-known songs like ‘Ramble On’ and ‘The Immigrant Song’ are about LOTR and Vikings respectively.

Ancient magical symbols By the time Led Zeppelin finished their third album, Led Zeppelin III, the band was very much acclaimed by the younger generations, but music critics from big organizations like Rolling Stone magazine kept writing negative reviews. As a reaction, the band decided not to name their fourth album. The album contains a minimum amount of letters in a small font, just to name the songs, one external musician and the producer. The cover does not contain words and the name of the band is not written on the record. Instead, the band put in four magical symbols (see the figures below). Each symbol represents one member of the band.

Page told interviewers that the symbols were mainly taken out of Rudolf Koch’s 1955 Book of Signs, a collection of ancient and magical symbols from across the world. The bands bold move was

A lot has happened since the last Simon Ster, like the Lustrum Gala in honor of Simon Stevins 12th lustrum. This unforgettable evening took place on the 17th of November in castle the Berckt. Nearly 200 students enjoyed an evening full of food, beer, wine, dancing and conviviality.

Bachelor Final Project

Position feedback implementation in a drone toolbox

Flying with drones is a lot of fun to do. However, for a drone to correctly fly a given path it needs some form of position feedback. Because most cheap drones do not come with a GPS-sensor, other solutions need to be found. This BFP focuses on the position feedback of a drone with help from LED’s and a camera and the implementation of it in a drone toolbox.

Robbert Louwers Drones are used for a lot of applications nowadays. Using the included software is mostly not that hard, but using custom software forms a bigger challenge. To ease the way custom software can be implemented on the drone, a new Simulink

toolbox was developed by Sanne Marx for his graduation project.

This toolbox consists of a rather easy to understand flight model and a flight interface through which the drone can be controlled.

also be customized to serve your own purpose. The basic system architecture of the flight model that is present in the toolbox is shown in Figure 1.

example of such a trajectory, flown with a controller designed in the Master’s thesis of Sebastiaan van den Eijnden, is shown in the figure below, where the desired trajectory and the flown trajectory are both shown.

To be able to compensate for drift in this model, the drone uses an onboard camera that faces downward. When this camera sees a recognizable pattern on the ground, it can calculate a change in its position by looking at the pixel shift and then adjust its position accordingly.

In another graduation project, an image processing algorithm was developed. This algorithm processes images from a camera that is position above the RoboCup soccer field here at the TU/e.

Through LED identifiers which are located on top of the drone, this algorithm can calculate the position of the drone. Through a position feedback loop the drone can then stabilize its flight to become drift free.

The project The first step of my Bachelor Final Project consisted of implementing the position feedback loop into the drone toolbox. If you look at the figure which shows the system architecture of the flight model, this basically means that the bottom camera block will be replaced by a position feedback block. Although this sounds relatively easy, some extra challenges were presented because the toolbox and the algorithm were developed in different versions of Matlab. Some re-writing of the algorithm had to be done to make it work in the newest versions of Matlab, but when this was done the implementation of the position feedback loop went smoothly.

As can be seen from the figure, drift is not yet successfully countered. The position feedback is implemented in the toolbox, but the controller still must be adjusted to be able to achieve a stable hover flight. When the controller is successfully adjusted, more complex trajectories can be programmed in the toolbox. An

For the final part of my BFP I have to replace the default controller that is present in the flight model by a non-linear controller that was developed by Sebastiaan van den Eijnden in 2016. To be able to do this, the controller has to be finetuned somewhat. Some of the variables present in the controller were numerically determined because this was quicker and the values do not differ much from analytical derived values. This does however produce more noise on the signal, so an analytical derivation of these variables would be preferred.

Implementing this non-linear controller also makes it possible to add more complex trajectories for the drone to follow, for example a trajectory which includes a looping. However, it will take more than just this non-linear controller to be able to make a looping, because the current setup of the toolbox is not able to describe the position of the drone would it go upside down. Another problem with the drone is that the on-board CPU of the drone is very simple, which makes it so that the memory overflows quickly causing the drone to crash. An idea on how to reduce the CPUload is already present, namely by replacing the rotation matrices that are now being used to describe the orientation of the drone by quaternions. The rotation matrices have a size of 3x3, and three matrices are being used to describe the orientation. Quaternions consist of only four variables, thus making the computational load significantly lower. This will however be done in future BFP projects, so it will take some time before we see drones doing loopings at the RoboCup soccer field.

Stratumseind

As a living lab

Every Thursday many students go to Stratumseind to drink one or two beers and have a nice evening. What most people do not know is that this street, with around 50 bars in it, actually is one of the most advanced living labs in the Netherlands. Already since 2013 the TU/e, Fontys and Philips are doing tests here. But what does this mean for us, students?

Sem James Everyone has probably already seen one or more of the effects of Stratumseind being used as a lab. Lampposts with many cameras and all kind of other strange looking things on it are some of the visible consequences of the experiments. In a small room on the first floor of the Oude Rechtbank, there are many screens and computers to control all these sensors, cameras and the loads of data that are coming out. But not only the data from these sensors is used: also social media, the police, breweries and the government provide data to make the system work.

The experiments have already been taking place for several years.

The famous bar street in Eindhoven was not known as the most safe and friendly place to have an evening out. In fact, it was known for its criminality and kind of aggressive atmosphere. At some point, the local government thought that something had to change. That is where around 20 different research institutes saw the opportunity to turn this place into an actual living lab in which the world’s most innovative and new techniques could be used.

Light

Many sensors

For many years it has been clear that different colours of light could influence people’s behaviour. With this in mind, the TU/e in combination with Philips (and some other institutes) came up with the plan to diffuse escalating behaviour by creating different light scenarios that respond on the way people behave. A kind of eye-opening outcome of the tests with this different scenarios can be found in the demands of the police. In the weekends around 3:50 in the morning, the police wants bright white light in order to control the different fights that mostly take place around then. However, the tests showed that people tend to get more aggressive when the light is white and bright. Researchers from the TU/e say that in this case the light must have a lower intensity.

To make all this happen, many more sensors are present. At lantern posts there are 3D-sound measuring devices to not only measure the sound intensity, but also detect the direction of which the noise came from. Also Wi-Fi- and Bluetooth detectors are present in order to get to know at which spots many people are standing together. For example at large festivities as carnival this is a way to prevent certain spots from becoming too crowded. Aside from this, a weather station is present to predict the behaviour of people in different weather conditions.

Sound There are other ways as well to influence behavior of people who visit Stratumseind aside from changing the light. Sound does also have these properties. Recent experiments show that a higher sound intensity can mean that there is something going on. Throughout whole Stratumseind there are sound sensors that measure the sound intensity in real time. When a group of people gets aggressive, this usually results in a peak in the amount of noise they produce. With sensors available throughout the whole street it is easy to recognise the exact place where the disturbances are taking place. In the figure below it is clear that when an event or even something as simple as cleaning is taking place, it can easily be detected.

Perfume One of the most recent developments is the usage of different perfumes in order to steer the behaviour of people. Just like the fact that lights influence the behaviour of people, different smells can do the same. For example an orange smell tends to have a positive influence on people, whereas lavender and rose scent tend to upset people and eventually tend them to be more aggressive.

So maybe in the future we can have the nice smell of oranges combined with the smell of your lovely ‘kapsalon’.

Do all these sensors indeed help predicting behaviour of people?

Not yet. The information that is gathered now is there for the purpose of analysis. There still is a long way to go in combining all the data in order to make a good prediction on what people might do in different circumstances. A Stratumseind in which the police does not play a role still seems to be quite far away.

Are we being spied?

Basically we are being spied during a visit to Stratumseind.

However, cameras have been present for many years and everyone knows they are there. The new system of sensors gathers data that is pretty anonymous. It is just analysing behaviour of groups of people in order to be able to predict behaviour. This will in the end probably make the bar street a lot safer for all of us! It’s all about making Stratumseind safer, more sociable and more pleasant to visit.

Gathering data is one thing, processing it is a second thing.

The other side of gathering so much data is that it all has to be processed at some point. Especially for this there is an institute within the TU/e that is focused on handling such big amounts of data. Maybe in the future this will make sure that people’s actions are already known before it actually happens. Until then we can just drink our beer there without anyone knowing in advance.

Continu Variabel!

Ter aanvulling van het vak Numerieke Mechanica konden studenten zich inschrijven voor het bedrijfsbezoek aan Bosch Transmission Technology in Tilburg. Hier wordt de duwband van de mechanische continu variabele transmissie (CVT) vervaardigd. Dit onderdeel vindt zijn toepassing voornamelijk in (hybride) personenwagens in Azië en de Verenigde Staten. De markt in Europa is kleiner maar neemt toe in omvang door onder andere de ontwikkelingen in de metallurgie.

Willem Ermeling Deze Nederlandse uitvinding onderscheidt zich van de conventionele versnellingsbak doordat bijna elk toerental bij éénzelfde snelheid gekozen kan worden. Dit brengt natuurlijk meerdere voordelen met zich mee. Denk bijvoorbeeld aan het onderhoud, verbruik en comfort.

Tijdens de bedrijfspresentatie werden meerdere feiten en fabricage processen uitgelegd waaronder een nieuw ontwerp van de band. Hierna was er een korte casestudy onder het genot van een bakkie. In de fabriek konden we stap voor stap zien hoe deze band gemaakt wordt. Het is opmerkelijk hoeveel machines en werknemers er nodig zijn om zo’n relatief simpele duwband in elkaar te zetten. Na de rondleiding werd er afgesloten met een flesje fris waarna er nog enkele vragen gesteld konden worden.

Als afsluiting is de grote vraag waarom de CVT niet in elke moderne auto toegepast wordt. De CVT in zijn geheel lijkt meer voordelen te hebben dan de conventionele versnellingsbak, maar in Europa zijn handgeschakelde auto’s erg in trek. Daarnaast heeft deze al 60-jarige uitvinding geen feilloze historie; het kwam geregeld voor dat zo’n band voortijdig slijt of zelfs breekt. Zijnde een werktuigbouwkundige maakt dit de keuze tussen een CVT of een handgeschakelde 5-bak natuurlijk erg makkelijk.

De pilsproeverij

Degusteren kun je leren

Al sinds mensenheugenis bestaat er onenigheid over die ene vraag waar studenten het maar niet over eens lijken te worden: welk merk pils is nu het lekkerst?

Robbert Louwers & Rik van Cauwenberghe Om deze vraag te beantwoorden besloten ondergetekenden de proef op de som te nemen om voor eens en altijd een einde te maken aan deze discussie door een heuse pilsproefavond op touw te zetten.

De grootste pilskenners van de vereniging zijn natuurlijk diegenen die het langst rondlopen in de krochten van Gemini: de ouwelullen. Zij verzamelen zich verschillende keren per jaar bij de even beruchte als befaamde ö-borrel en laat dat dan juist de plek zijn waar wij ze een palet aan pils onder de neus schoven, samen met een zorgvuldig samengestelde vragenlijst. Dit alles voor de wetenschap natuurlijk.

De opzet Voor de pilsproeverij werden zeven verschillende merken pils ter beschikking gesteld, mede mogelijk gemaakt door de Hoofdredacteur Huisorgaan die er een bescheiden budget voor vrij maakte. De keus voor juist deze merken is al dan niet lichtelijk beïnvloed door de Bonus-acties van een niet nader te noemen supermarkt. Welke merken pils zijn er dan geproefd vraagt u zich af? Dit waren Grolsch, Heineken, Brand, Amstel, Bavaria, AH Basic en Hertog Jan. Om de proeverij enigszins ordentelijk te laten verlopen, zijn er enkele proefcriteria opgesteld met het doel een zo

‘objectief’ mogelijk beeld te krijgen. De deelnemers moesten alle merken beoordelen op geur, kleur, schuim, smaak en nasmaak & mondgevoel.

Tijdens de proeverij kregen de deelnemers een groot, genummerd vilt voor zich. Op de nummers werden de verschillende merken pils, in de gedaante van tot de helft gevulde fluitjes, geplaatst.

De volgorde hiervan was voor iedere deelnemer hetzelfde. Via de vragenlijst kon de deelnemer elk glas pils beoordelen op eerdergenoemde criteria. Het tweede onderdeel van de test was het koppelen van de glazen aan het juiste merk. Tot slot kregen de deelnemers nog een achtste proefglas, waarvan de inhoud gelijk was aan één van de voorgaande glazen. Het was logischerwijs aan de deelnemer om aan te geven welk merk pils hij voor de tweede keer gedronken had. Het was hierbij de bedoeling dat hij dit kon aangeven zonder de eerste zeven monsters nogmaals te proeven.

Belangrijk om hierbij te vermelden is dat de proeverij werd uitgevoerd aan het begin van de avond, zodat eventuele andere (alcoholische) versnaperingen geen rol zouden kunnen spelen in het beoordelingsproces.

De resultaten Uit de resultaten van de vragenlijst is het duidelijk dat niet alle criteria even goed beoordeeld konden worden. De deelnemers hadden met name moeite om de geur, kleur en helderheid van de verschillende merken pils goed te beoordelen. Omdat de deelnemers naar alle waarschijnlijkheid dan wel grote volumes pils nuttigen, staan ze echter niet stil bij de verfijnde smaken van het pils. Hierdoor bleek het toch lastig om minieme verschillen te vinden tussen dezelfde types bier. De enige opmerking die vaak terug gezien kon worden is dat de Hertog Jan significant donkerder van kleur is dan de andere merken.

Ook de kwaliteit van het schuim werd over het algemeen slecht beoordeeld. Na het inschenken van de biertjes sloegen deze al snel dood. Naar alle waarschijnlijkheid is dit te wijten aan de slecht onderhouden spoelbak en –borstels in De Weeghconst. Er was een enkele deelnemer die alle biertjes een keer geschud heeft alvorens ze te nuttigen, om het schuim toch nog een beoordeling te kunnen geven. Hierbij werd opgemerkt dat Hertog Jan en Heineken van zichzelf al snel doodslaan, wat overigens ook te wijten kan zijn aan een meer vervuild glas ten opzichte van het andere glaswerk.

Dan de criteria die wél goed beoordeeld kunnen worden en die logischerwijs het belangrijkst waren voor deze proeverij, smaak en nasmaak & mondgevoel! Opmerkelijk bij de beoordeling van de smaak is dat de soorten pils waarvan gedacht werd dat ze hoog beoordeeld zouden worden juist laag beoordeeld werden (Hertog Jan & Grolsch) en vice versa (Amstel & Heineken). Dit is ook terug te zien in de opmerkingen die bij de verschillende merken zijn geplaatst. Zo werd Hertog Jan als bitter ervaren, was Grolsch vies & metaalachtig, was Amstel zoet & fris en werd de AH Basic omschreven als basis. Over Amstel en Heineken is in de beoordelingen de meeste consensus te vinden, de standaarddeviatie van de gegeven cijfers is bij deze twee merken het kleinst.

De trend in de beoordeling van de smaak is terug te zien in de beoordeling van de nasmaak en het mondgevoel. Hier kwamen wederom Amstel en Brand goed uit de test en werden Hertog Jan en Grolsch wederom slecht beoordeeld. Een positieve uitschieter bij dit criterium is de AH Basic. Deze werd tevens aangemerkt als een prima doordrinkpils. Amstel werd ook hier weer zeer positief omschreven als “bloemig en lekker”.

Als laatste nog de resultaten waarop iedereen nu al bijna twee pagina’s aan het wachten is, het matchen van de glazen aan het juiste merk. Hertog Jan, Heineken en Grolsch zijn het vaakst goed gekoppeld aan het bijbehorende glas. Dit is waarschijnlijk te wijden aan de karakteristieke smaak van Hertog Jan en Grolsch, het goed koppelen van Heineken is naar ons idee vooral van toevallige aard. Verder valt het op dat Bavaria vaak aangezien is voor de AH Basic pils. Voor de herhaaltest is AH Basic gebruikt, wat slechts door één iemand goed is geraden. Bij de herhaaltest werd de AH Basic vaak aangezien voor Bavaria. Een eervolle vermelding moet gemaakt worden voor Ricardo van der Pluijm, hij was de enige persoon die de herhaaltest goed geraden heeft en hij had daarnaast nog drie koppels goed. Daniël Lelivelt mag zichzelf vanaf heden de ultieme pilskenner noemen: hij heeft maar liefst vier keer het goede glas aan het bijbehorende merk gekoppeld.

De meeste deelnemers hebben maar één enkele keer het goede glas aan het bijbehorende merk weten te koppelen. Ook waren er enkelen die geen enkele keer de juiste match hebben weten te maken, wat ook een prestatie op zich genoemd mag worden.

Statistisch gezien is de kans immers groter om één koppel goed te hebben dan geen enkele.

De eindconclusie Na het analyseren van de resultaten kan er geconcludeerd worden dat het niet meevalt om onderscheid te maken tussen de verschillende soorten pils wanneer deze blind geproefd worden.

Amstel is tegen de verwachtingen in goed uit de test gekomen, het tegenovergestelde geldt voor Hertog Jan. Een ding dat zeker is, is dat een etiketje veel aan de beleving verandert en dat smaak vooral tussen de oren zit.

Drum kit fundamentals

As mechanical engineers we spend most of our time solving technical problems or working on beautiful crafting projects. To get away from all of this technical stuff a lot of Simon members enjoy dabbling in music. We ourselves like to blow off some steam by beating on some drums. We can, as mechanical engineers, however still make music a technical subject. So without further ado here are the logistics of a drum kit.

Tjalle Dijkstra Bass Let’s start with the ‘bassics’. The bass is, as you can see the central piece of the drum kit. It is operated using a pedal with your right foot. Some advanced players have two bass pedals, one for the left and one for the right foot, resulting in double bass speed.

This is mainly used in metal music, but never in genres like jazz or funk. John Bonham (Led Zeppelin) is one of the drummers with a very distinctive bass technique. Dutch people would call this technique: ”Keihard knallen” or in English: “Playing fairly loud”.

Hi Hat The hihat consists of two cymbals on top of each other. You can open and close these two cymbals using your left foot, and the right hand is mainly used to play on it. When the hihat is open the cymbals are free to vibrate and this will make more of a sizzling sound. Closed, the hihat will however give very short, clear beats, called playing staccato.

Snare drum The snare drum is the last part, together with the bass and hihat, needed to play most of the basic drum beats. The snare has a sharper sound than the rest of the set due to metal springs across the bottom. Using a lever on the side these springs can switched between touching the bottom sheet or not. This way the snare

can have two different sounds, one sharp and one dull sound.

One of the drummers best known for his snare drum techniques is Buddy Rich, who is regarded as one of the best drummers to ever live.

The rest of the set, toms and cymbals, are used for adding some variety and playing “fills”. These are short interruptions of the rhythm to introduce a new part of the song for the audience and the rest of the band. That’s basically it for the fundamental parts of the drum kit. If you ever find yourself behind a drum kit you now know what’s what.

Tractor transmission

More than just a gearbox

The tractor and its use are of great importance in todays world, but how can such a brute machine function? How can the tractor both move itself and power equipment at the same time?

Sjors Boutkan From the engine to the wheels Driving a tractor differs a lot from driving a car. The cabin is filled with many different levers and buttons, which can makes things pretty complicated. Getting the tractor to move requires the driver to simply select a gear, but even this can be a little tricky.

Some tractors have a gear stick, some have multiple, some have gear sticks for the equipment and some have none. How is this possible?

The traditional gearbox found in cars is not like any gearbox used in tractors. One of the first differences is the amount of gears. A tractor needs to operate at many different speeds for different kinds of applications. The transportation of goods can be done at a much higher speed than plowing a field. This requires an addition to the standard amount of gears: Ranges. An extra gearbox is added to the main gearbox in series which increases the total amount of gears significantly. A tractor with five gears and three ranges has fifteen different gear combinations. This allows the tractor to have the maximum amount of power available at many different speeds. The ranges can be selected with a separate stick, meaning two sticks are used when selecting a desired gear.

The clutch allows for standard gear changing while driving. But changing ranges can only be done while stationary.

This system allowed the tractors to always operate at the optimal RPM and speed, but in some situations this isn’t enough. A sudden uneven spot in the field might require more power very suddenly,

which could prompt the tractor to stall during operation. Dual Power gearboxes are the solution to this problem. An extra switch or pedal allows the tractor to switch between two drive ranges without engaging the clutch. The difference between these ranges is rather small, but it is enough to compensate for sudden increases in power demands.

Taking off Did you know a tractor does not have to use the first gear when driving away from a stationary position? The second of even third gear will suffice, because of the sheer power of the tractor engine.

Tractor engines are way harder to stall than a car engine because of the incredible torque, and skipping a gear when driving away is always a nice bonus!

PTO One of the big additions to the tractor gearboxes is the PTO, which stands for power take-off. This allows the tractor to power not only the wheels, but also the machines attached at the front or back of the tractor. Equipment like plows or cultivators need to be pulled through the field, in order to operate, and do not need external power. More advanced equipment like sprayers, seeders and harvesters do require extra power to function. Back in the days of the steam engines, this was achieved by a big external wheel with a flat belt attached. As can be seen in the figure, this is a big inconvenience and also very dangerous. The modern equivalent is safer, easier to use and able to transfer more power. They can be recognized by the yellow safety cap around the shaft.

Usage of the gears You might notice the remarkable position of the reverse gear in the scheme, it is not at the far left or right like in a car. This position is actually very handy when operating a tractor. Some jobs require the driver to switch between forward and reverse very quickly, and the placement of the reverse gear directly beneath the second gear means the driver can switch direction by only pushing the stick forward or backwards, without moving the stick sideward.

The second gear is most convenient when operating because of it versatile speed range.

But wait, there’s more!

The technological improvements don’t stop there! The introduction of hydrostatic transmissions allows tractors to change gear without engaging the clutch. Tractors became easier to operate, easier to access and more comfortable when driving, but the tractors also became bigger. Current tractors can weigh over ten tons(!), which requires a different kind of gearbox and 24 speed gearboxes were getting impractical for these monsters. That’s where the continuously variable transmission (CVT) steps in. No more gear changes, no more abrupt shocks while driving, and maximum power available at all speeds. The modern beasts of agriculture use this system, which simplifies the driving experience. But don’t think the cabin has become emptier nowadays!

PTO back in the days

The first PTO’s were directly connected to the main gearbox.

This meant that the PTO was disconnected whenever the driver engaged the clutch. In practice this proved to be rather problematic because shifting gears and stopping while working was impossible. The engineers of the past solved this problem by introducing a double clutch. Both the clutch of the PTO and the main gearbox are operated with one pedal, but the level of the pedal is the difference between engaging the different clutches.

The main gearbox clutch is engaged when the pedal is pressed halfway through, but both the drive clutch and the PTO clutch are engaged when the pedal is pressed completely to the floor. This solved the problems of the deactivation of the PTO. The tractor does need to remain in a gear however in order to keep the PTO running. The invention of a PTO which functions independently of the tractor motion allows for stationary operations like powering a travelling irrigator or unloading forage wagons.

The gift for the Association named ‘Yoshi’ is presented by the 59th Board on General Members Meeting 60.8. This robust mobile cooking island is to fill a lot of bellies from hungry students of Mechanical Engineering used on many occasions.

In his first week, Yoshi was immediately used by the Cooking Committee to cook a delicious pasta Bolognese for the new first year students on the Simonkamp. If it wasn’t for Yoshi they weren’t able to cook a meal for so many students.

Since then it is impossible to imagine the inventory of our Association without Yoshi. Even our honorary member Willie ter Elst is impressed by this great addition to the Association.

Do you wonder why this gift is named Yoshi? Ask it to one of the members of the 59th Board!

Onion soup Do unions make your cry? This soup will definitely do so, but of joy! This delicious onion soup is also easy to make, but still a treat! You will need the following ingredients: • 50 gr butter • 750 gr onions, cut in thin slices • 2 cloves of garlic • 45 gr flour • 2 Liters beef or chicken stock • 1 bay leaf • 2 sprigs of thyme • Salt and pepper Want to add the extra wow factor to your soup? Try these variations • 250 mL dry white or red wine • 300 ml Leffe Bruin! Vegetables like carrots and parsnip taste very well together with the beer. These should be added to the pan after baking the onions. Bake them for around 5 minutes on a low heat furnace.

Step by step: 1. Melt the butter in a pan with a thick bottom and add the onions.

2. Bake the onions on low heat with occasional stirring for 25 minutes, or until the onions are golden brown and start to caramelize.

3. While the onions are baking you can chop the garlic in small pieces.

4. Add the garlic and the flour and keep stirring for about 2 minutes.

5. While stirring slowly add the stock with optionally the wine or beer and let it boil.

6. Add the bay leaf and the sprigs of thyme and spice with salt and pepper.

7. Cover the pan and let it slowly simmer for 25 minutes.

8. Take the bay leaf and the sprigs of thyme out and taste if the soup is nice!

If you want to take the extra step to onion heaven, you can add grilled bread slices with Gruyére cheese! You do need an oven with a grill function though. You need the following ingredients: • 12 slices of french bread • 100 gr Gruyère cheese 9. Preheat the grill.

10. Grill the slices of french bread, divide them over the 6 bowls and scoop soup over them.

11. Sprinkle with the grated Gruyère cheese and put the bowls under the grill until the cheese is golden brown and has melted.

12. Serve immediately!

Split pea soup

For the non-dutchies it may not look appealing, but it is delicious. An easy, typical Dutch meal to make it through these cold days! It even tastes better the day after, so it is a perfect meal to prepare for a busy day.

You will need the following ingredients (for six persons): • • • • • • • • • • •

400 gr split peas 150 gr smoked bacon 1 piece of gammon 2 bay leaves Salt and pepper 4 leeks 2 potatoes 2 carrots 1 small celeriac 2 smoked sausages A bundle of celery

Step by step: 1. Bring the split peas with 2 liters of water, the smoked bacon, bay leaves, pepper and some salt in to a boil.

2. Also put in the gammon, not sliced! This will be done later.

3. Set your furnace to a low heat and scoop the foam of the surface.

4. Let your soup boil for about 40 minutes with lid slanted on the pan.

5. This is perfect timing to watch the first half of an online lecture while you in the meantime clean the leeks and cut them in rings.

6. Peel the carrots, potatoes and celeriac and cut them in dices.

7. Scoop the meat out of the soup after the 40 minutes and cut it in dices.

8. Add the meat, leeks, carrots, potatoes and celeriac to the split peas and let it boil again for 30 minutes.

9. Perfect timing to watch your second half of college, just do not forget to add the smoked sausages after the 30 minutes. Let it boil for another 15 minutes with the sausage in.

10. Now chop the celery fine and slice the sausages in pieces after removing them from the soup.

11. Add the sliced sausages and celery and heat a final 5 minutes.

12. Enjoy!

In this kind of soup it does not really matter which kind of vegetables you put in, so be creative with ingredients you have left!

Cheese Sticks As a side dish Ingredients • Puff pastry • 1 Egg • Grated cheese • Salt • Pepper • Optional: Bacon or ham

Step by step: 1. Preheat the oven at 225 °C. 2. Let the puff pastry defrost for a bit. Do not forget to remove the plastic on the back! You do not want to peel off every piece from each stick afterwards.

3. Cut the slices of puff pastry in 4 or 5 strips and put them on a with baking paper covered baking plate or grill plate. Make sure they do not overlap!

4. Whip an egg in a small bowl and cover one side of the strips with the egg. (If you want to make fancy ones with a twist, twist them first and only cover the top) 5. Decorate your sticks with cheese or anything you like!

6. Bake the cheese sticks in the preheated oven and take them out when they are golden brown (after around 10-15 minutes).

7. You probably have to do this a couple of times to get through all your puff pastry!

8. Enjoy your cheese sticks with one of the delicious soups!

Contest 49.2 As our Treasurer is always busy counting and looking at numbers, the Chairman got an interesting challenge for her. He is looking for a number, but not just any number of course. What he needs is a number, which, when squared, contains all digits from zero to nine.

Although our Treasurer can work with numbers very well, she wasn’t able to solve the problem, so the Chairman gave her one tip: The number I am looking remains the same when you look at it upside down in in your digital calculator.

Answer 49.1 In the last Simon Ster we had the following contest, involving a ruler: The ruler was originally 61 centimeters long, but it broke and was left being 33 centimeters long. Because it was used so much , the numbers indicating the length mostly faded away and now only 8 of the originally 33 numbers are left. Although only 8 numbers remain, the Commissioner of Land Yachting can still measure every length from 1 to 33 centimeters correctly. The question is, which numbers are still left on the ruler?

Solution As Editor-in-Chief I enjoyed all the enthusiasm for creating a MATLAB script to create all the possible solutions. For everyone who found it, they noticed that there were a lot of solutions due to the fact that the order of the remaining 8 numbers on the ruler could differ in a lot of ways. This created a total of 120 possible solutions (60 unique solutions, which could begin on both sides of the ruler). One example of a solution is the following:
