Featured on this month’s front cover, Michaela Keszler of Douglas Elliman Real Estate presents an 1860’s Federal-style mansion on South Main Street in Southampton Village. Rarely offered for sale, this home has had only a handful of owners in the last hundred years. Meticulously renovated for 21st century living, even while recalling historic details such as restored lead glass windows and beautifully plastered walls. This exquisite home is known for its unique beauty from the Summer Colony period in Southampton. Truly a piece of history.

HAMPTON HABITUÉS GOOD NEWS GOSSIP ABOUT OUR NOTABLE FRIENDS AND NEIGHBORS
Cobra Kai
be sure to chew the scenery, in the best possible way, as Nicholas Cage’s agent in The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, which comes out in April.
of capitalism, shifting governmental economic policies and racial injustice. First screened at Sundance, the doc is currently in search of a distributor.
Also starring Pedro Pascal, Tiffany Haddish and Sharon Horgan, the film follows Cage playing a fictionalized version of himself. Broke and broken down, he’s forced to take a $1 million role — attending the birthday party of a criminal superfan.
LOCAL LOVE Be on the lookout for our very own Matthew O’Connor in season four of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. The Hampton Bays resident and actor, whose full-time job is dispatcher for the Southampton Town Police Department, booked a co-starring role opposite series star Rachel Brosnahan on the Amazon Prime hit.
As for Harris, stay tuned for more news on the five-time Emmy winner. His next projects include roles in The Matrix franchise and the limited series It’s a Sin for HBO Max. Can’t wait!
MARTIAL ARTS Deep, respectful karate bows are in order for Montauk’s Ralph Macchio, now starring in season four of Cobra Kai. The star of The Karate Kid movies, on which the popular Netflix streamer is based, has returned for another round that’s sure to have fans smiling ear to ear. This season, his character Daniel pairs up with former nemesis, Johnny, played by William Zabka, to put evil sensei John Kreese (Martin Kove) and his Cobra Kai dojo out of business. Now 30 years after their original conflict, the owners of the Miyagi-Do and Eagle Fang dojos decide to join forces to take down Cobra Kai at the All Valley Under 18 Karate Tournament. The crowd-pleasing series is worth it this go-round just to watch Mr. Nice Guy Macchio tackle the ridiculous (ahem) “manly” Eagle Fang training regime, which includes shoveling coal, bare-knuckle pushups, and combat with a tennis ball machine. Gotta love this guy! FAN FAVORITE Water Mill’s Jennifer Lopez is also back on streaming screens — this time in the new romantic comedy Marry Me. In theaters and available to view on Peacock, the light comedy follows pop superstar Kat Valdez (Lopez) as she jumps into marriage with a total stranger, played by Owen Wilson, live and on the concert stage after she discovers her fiancée has been cheating on her. Who doesn’t love a good J. Lo rom com? SCENE STEALER We’ve got the popcorn ready for Amagansett’s Neil Patrick Harris’s next role. We’re placing bets that he’ll

Shoutouts are also long overdue for Joe Pallister, also of Hamptons Bays, who we also just caught on season one of The Flight Attendant. Currently streaming on HBO Max, Pallister plays badass killer Josef Jazar in episode five, “Other People’s Houses,” opposite Zosia Mamet. Unfortunately, Pallister meets an untimely end in the episode, but he’s got a couple of great scenes. If you haven’t caught it yet, you’re missing out. This compelling series stars Kaley Cuoco in a surprisingly riveting dramatic role. Totally worth it. A SING & A DON’T MISS Amagansett’s Scarlett Johansson joined lots of other A-listers in the animated holiday movie Sing 2. In this one, she voiced (and sang!) the character of rocker and teen porcupine Ash. Other big names in the movie include Bono, Reese Witherspoon, Matthew McConaughey, Taryn Egerton, Nick Kroll, Bobby Cannavale, Halsey, and Pharrell Williams.
ALL THE MONEY IN THE WORLD We’re also very excited to catch Abigail Disney’s riveting documentary about pay inequality called The American Dream and Other Fairy Tales. In it, the East End and Hamptons International Film Festival frequenter, a harsh critic of wealth inequity and outspoken advocate for the wealth tax, takes aim at her family’s former business. Produced by Ms. Disney and two of her siblings — Susan Disney Lord and Tim Disney — the film draws attention to the Disney corporation as the “ground zero of the widening inequality in America.” In it, the disparities between leadership and regular workers are shone in harsh relief, as are the subjects of the evolution
Sag Harbor’s Jimmy Buffett just showed up on our small screens again, guest starring as himself on CBS’s Blue Bloods in January. The singer-songwriter has also played the recurring role of helicopter pilot Frank Bama on the CBS procedural Hawaii Five-O.

HOT SALES & LISTINGS... WITH A DOLLOP OF HAMPTONS GOSSIP BY KAREN DASH
PERELMAN IN CONTRACT Back in September, Ron Perelman, zillionaire owner of the Creeks, listed his second East Hamptons estate. Asking $115 million, the 9.25acre oceanfront property, on Lily Pond Lane, was listed by Sotheby’s agent Harald Grant. Perelman paid just $3.75 million for the property back in 1994, which was occupied by his ex-wife Claudia Cohen until her death in 2007. With 385 feet of ocean frontage, the property could possibly be subdivided. The existing house is a 1971 teardown, though of course there’s a pool, pool house, and tennis court with pavilion. The property, which is now in contract, will net Perelman closer to $80 million than the hundred or so he was looking for, according to a profile in the New York Times. Thing is, buyers smell the scent of desperation as Perelman frantically attempts to downsize his enormous business and real estate holdings. We’ll be very interested to see who buys the property and of course, what happens to it. Stay tuned.

number one sale of the year — that of Jule Pond,
the market. In 2021, five of the top ten deals were done off market. In all, the top 10 deals totaled a whopping $607 million, about 35 percent more than 2020’s list. Another difference this year? For once, Meadow Lane wasn’t the most expensive street in the Hamptons. This year Meadow Lane had just two entries on the list, adding up to $113 million. Perennial bridesmaid Further Lane had a great year, with three entries on the list adding up to $174 million. We’ve included the Spaeth Lane sale with Further Lane, since of course Spaeth leads off Further. (Cheating? Come at us, bro!) But even if we left it off, Further Lane would squeak past Meadow with $114 million in sales. Congrats, Further. A sale that closed in December under most people’s radar was that of 38 Association Road, Wainscott. The two-acre property, with 161 feet of oceanfront, was carved from the site of the former guesthouse of iconic Kilkare, next door. The property was asking $37 million, but closed for $30 million. In 2005, the Shingle Style house, designed by Shope Reno Wharton, and built by Ben Krupinski Builder, began to rise above the dunes. In all, there is 6,537 square feet of space with five bedrooms and five full and two half baths. Of course, most rooms have a beautiful ocean view, or views of open space or Georgica Pond. The seller was investment banker Fred Seegal. Bespoke listed the property and Michelle Tiberio and Andy Volet of The Corcoran Group brought the buyer. HAUTE SPOT VALERIE DILORENZO BRINGS BROADWAY BACK
BY DAWN WATSON Ms. diLorenzo’s theater project is also a very personal endeavor. She read the play “Right Before I Go” by television producer Stan Zimmerman — who wrote for The Golden Girls and Gilmore Girls — and knew that she needed to bring it home to the East End. The play brings to life the last written words of those who took their own lives and those who survived suicide attempts. While the subject matter is dark, the show has been hailed for raising awareness and offering hope for suicide prevention. “So many people are dealing with really tough times right now,” says diLorenzo of her reasoning for choosing the play. “I thought this could help people feel less lonely, more alive.”

rior to Covid, getting regular work was tough enough for talent. The competition was fierce, and the opportunities were sparse. But the past two years have made it nearly impossible for creative people to find their way to the stage with any regularity.
talents of several other professional East End singers — including Joe Delia, James Bernard, Randolph Hudson III, Bosco Michne, Steve Shaughnessy, and Amanda Jones — the yet-to-benamed collaboration will include “songs that were burning to be heard,” according to diLorenzo.
Faced with few open venues, and limited opportunities to even get in front of audiences, Valerie diLorenzo decided that it was time to get busy. Instead of waiting for the possibilities to come to her, she did her own thing. As a result, she’s got a slew of new projects, including a new album to release, a stage play to produce, and several upcoming concerts planned.
The 18-song collection includes some of her favorites from musicals, hard-to-find recordings, and a few deeper cuts. Tracks include “Corner of the Sky” from Pippin, “I Got Lost in His Arms” from Annie Get Your Gun, “Far Away Places,” a lullaby made famous by Perry Como and Dinah Shore, “Don’t Forget Me” from the television show Smash and “Never Let Me Go,” an out-of-print tune from Aretha Franklin.
“You’ve got to create your own work,” she says. “That’s the difference between waiting and doing. You don’t have to be on Broadway to make your own art, pursue your own passion and have a good livelihood.” The album, her third, will be released in April. Produced by Cynthia Daniels and featuring the
“The beauty of this album is that it’s a collection of songs that most of you have never ever heard before but will still recognize in some way,” she says of her passion project, which will be released on the regular streaming platforms and available online at retailers such as Amazon, CD Baby, and on her website.
Bringing together even more East End talents, the show will stage at LTV in Wainscott in May and will feature staged readings by Matthew Conlon, Susan Stout, Rachel Feldman, John Leonard, Brian Mott, Vay David, and a few East Hampton High School students as well. The production will also be accompanied by a Q&A with the cast and panel discussions. “Yes, it’s tragic, but it’s also surprisingly light in many ways,” says Ms. diLorenzo. “I see it as a real opportunity to bring awareness to the important topic of mental health issues. Looking ahead to what she hopes will be more positive times, the singer and actor has also booked a slate of other gigs, including a series of Stephen Sondheim tribute concerts and live performances across the East End and beyond. “All the roads lead together to being able to do what I love: singing, acting, dancing, and being able to include my talented friends,” she laughs. “I’m a musical theater baby at heart. So even if the theaters are dark, we’re still going to find a way to make it Broadway all the way!” Learn more about Valerie diLorenzo at www.valeriedilorenzo.com.

COME SHELL OR HIGH WATER JODY CUKIER’S ARTISTIC JOURNEY
Jody Cukier collecting shells
T
he Japanese celebrate the art of kintsugi or “golden repair” where lacquer is mixed with powdered gold to fix the cracks in ceramics. It treats the breakage and repair as part of the history of the object rather than as something to disguise. Jody Cukier embodies this philosophy, turning to art to express both what has broken and has the power to endure. Cukier lost her 13-year-old daughter Julia in 2010 when she was killed crossing the road to catch her school bus in Los Angeles. She had to plot a course forward in unimaginable grief, leaving a successful career in advertising and motion picture marketing to return to her Long Island roots and discover a passion which would reconnect her to life. The seeds of her artistic vision were first planted when she was packing to leave Los Angeles, noticing the patterns in her collections. She experimented with photographing them in ways where the graphic composition was both representational but abstract. She was struck when enlarging a photograph of a tray of mussels at Staples that people were fascinated, coming over to ask what it was. Cukier studied art and psychology at Harvard before earning her MBA and also has a background in home design, influencing her perceptive eye. Her first solo gallery show in Manhattan titled “Come Shell or High Water,” presented her photography and physical assemblies to the public. Reminiscent of “Gift From the Sea,” Anne Morrow Lindbergh’s contemplative journey back from the

grief of losing her son, Cukier found solace on the sea shore. Walking the beaches intensified when she moved to her new home in Hampton Bays, further developing this art form of collecting shells and marine-life fragments, poetically weathered and worn. She creates sculptures and abstract assemblies which she photographs to produce archival pigment prints. “My work relies on the physical labor of hand collection, the patience of hand manipulation and the meditative benefits of both,” she explains, “The process by which I search and sort, collect and create, is as important as the work that results.” When asked her secret favorite local beaches to scour, she replies with a laugh, “That’s like asking a fisherman where the fish are.” As a storyteller Cukier realizes, like the jagged piece of glass which is tossed into the sea and emerges over time opaque and with smooth edges, it is about the journey. Cukier comments, “It’s all about bearing witness, to find beauty in that which is broken. That is optimism for people. I am the daughter of a Holocaust survivor. My father’s experience provided an emotional blueprint for a way of living, not recovery per se, but to manage the persistent ache. When I am on the beach putting one step in front of the other and picking up a shell, it is the only thing I am thinking about.” She adds, “The point isn’t perfection. It’s what has survived the tossing and the tumbling and endured. I use that as a metaphor for the human condition.” She recounts the day she had laid a picture of her

daughter Julia’s dance poses next to a black and white photograph of carved whelks. It was only when they were side by side that she realized the influence, a connection she has highlighted in talks at her alma mater and more recently, at the Parrish Art Museum. Cukier’s work has been exhibited at Southampton Town Hall, the Shelter Island Historical Society, as well as Guild Hall, and the Southampton Cultural Center and is in private collections in New York, Los Angeles, Connecticut, St. Louis, Massachusetts, and Cabo San Lucas. Her connection to the local art community is also of vital importance, a member of the Southampton Artists Association and group of photographers meeting at the John Jermain Library in Sag Harbor. She cites the importance of art programs in schools, crediting her public high school in Levittown and her combined studies in art and psychology at Harvard for an inspiring art education. Cukier also remains passionate about supporting street safety initiatives. While the grief of losing her daughter remains ever present, Jody Cukier’s art has become her “golden repair,” that which holds the heartbroken pieces beautifully together. www.jodycukier.com

inter can be the drabbest time of year in the northeast. But what if you could approach the season of no color outside a little differently? The South Fork’s restaurants are peppered with stunning dining establishments that embrace bold colors, integrating serious interior design with — you guessed it — color. One need not venture too far from the confines of home to find the full spectrum this year.
For a refreshing jolt to your winter palette (and palate), start in the east, in Amagansett, at Coche Comedor. Coche Comedor — which is Spanish for dining car, an apt name for this restaurant, which was once itself a sleek dining car that was rehabbed a few summers ago — offers colorful Italian tile, a graffiti-style mural, and primary-colored tables that speak to the country that inspired the cuisine: Mexico. Color dominates the menu and the drinks list (frozen margaritas come bolstered by a selection of flavors, including a vibrant red sour cherry floater).
A tour of the South Fork’s most colorful spots would not be complete, of course, without a trip to Bamboo, in Southampton. This space been many things over the years, but these days it boasts a cerulean bar that will brighten even the dullest mid-winter mood. The restaurant is not currently serving alcohol, but don’t let that dissuade you from sidling up and tucking into a plate of crispy pork gyoza. Outside, the leaves may be gone, but inside, the South Fork won’t let you forget the many colors of the rainbow.
East Hampton’s veteran Nick & Toni’s offers more subdued shades. Co-owner Toni Ross, an artist herself, has made the three-decades-old restaurant a place to showcase her ever-growing collection of fine art. On any given night, guests can find diverse, unique, and, yes, colorful works hanging in the warm (and highly coveted) dining room.

Almond, in Bridgehampton, has always been famous for its local take on bistro fare. Just ask co-owner and executive chef Jason Weiner, who has integrated South Fork farms into his menu verbiage. But they may be just as famous for their House of Scalamandre zebras wallpaper in Masai Red, which provides an accent wall in the restaurant’s rear. It’s a famous pop of color in a restaurant famous for so much: its food, its lively bar scene, its personable presence on the corner of one of the Hamptons’ most visible corners. Stop in for a drink, for a plate of Korean-style short ribs, or for a look at the wallpaper on a dreary January afternoon. You’ll be rewarded either way.

BRITTANY MAROM TRANSFORMS A MUSIC LOVER’S MANHATTAN LOFT INTO A SHOWSTOPPER. BY KATYA RUSSELL PHOTOGRAPHS BY REBECCA POLLAK
W
hen a client of Brittany Marom commissioned her to furnish the two-thousand-square-foot loft he had just bought, she couldn’t stop thinking about the tin ceilings, solid wood columns and beams that ran the length of the open-plan space.
“The architecture was incredible!” says Marom. “How did the builders even get those beams into place? They are massive. You see a lot of converted warehouses and factory spaces downtown, but you hardly ever find one that feels like a true loft, as this one did.” Thus, Marom decided that the original features which distinguished the loft would inform her design and not the other way around. Change for the sake of change isn’t Marom’s style. Since founding her eponymous design firm seven years ago, she’s cultivated a following among those who appreciate her knack for knowledgeably mixing 20th-century classics and post-modern appointments with bespoke pieces. At their best, her interiors are hip and witty and glamorous; they also show an attentiveness to proportion and to the daily routines Tin ceilings, solid wood columns and beams that run the length of this open-plan space reflect the owner’s passion for rock music.

of the people who inhabit them. It is not too hard to design a room that is aesthetically pleasing; far harder to design a room that both looks good and feels good. The latter is bound up in intangibles — the skill

with which the designer has handled light, the disposition of objects, and the general feeling of well-being (or lack thereof) that we experience in a particular built environment. Marom took all of the above into consideration when working on the loft’s redesign. As the kitchen and bathroom had been nicely finished with Carrara marble, satin nickel plumbing fixtures, and English fittings when the client purchased the loft, Marom focused on the open-plan living space. As she worked with the client, an idea took shape which she describes as ‘elevated bachelor pad.’ (He has since married.) Also on the brief: the loft had to reflect its owner’s passion for rock music — he is a huge fan of the Grateful Dead — so Marom decided to kit out the main living area in what she describes as sixties-era ‘jam band style.’ One of her most inspired choices on that front are a pair of swivel chairs by Yabu Pushelberg. With their wide wing-like arms, they look as though they might take flight and seem tailor-made for playing the guitar. “They’re amazing,” Marom says. “For the shell, we chose a really soft yummy deep grey leather that has nice movement to it and we did the seat cushions in midnight-blue chenille.” Other vintage trophies include the Brazilian designer Sergio Rodrigues’s

iconic ‘Molleca’ chair. “I knew the client had to have one, but they cost a fortune. Even though he had a healthy budget, a chair like that could have broken it,” says Marom, who ultimately spotted one on Chairish, the online vintage furniture shop, at ‘a decent price.’ She says, “At first I was a little hesitant. I was like, Is this real? But then the seller provided me with paperwork from an auction house I frequent.” She offset those show-stoppers with a live-edge walnut coffee table of her own design. At a time of unprecedented disruptions in supply chains, Marom says she has become ever more devoted to custom and vintage pieces and antiques — a move that seems a natural evolution of her style. In this regard, the highlight of the lounge space is an early 19th-century rug from Turkey. With its rich blue, gold, and red patterned hues, it anchors the space and reflects the forms and colors in the room. As Marom tells it, she knew as soon as she set eyes on the rug (at ABC Home) that it would unify all the other elements in the space. Without a second to waste, she took the client to see it. “Basically,” she recalls with a laugh, “I told him he had to buy it.”

BEAM ME UP, SCOTTY PRESENCE OR VIRTUAL PRESENCE: THAT IS THE QUESTION
BY RICHARD LEWIN
T
he ultimate success of any new technology in the marketplace has historically challenged inventors to create regular upgrades. Faster, more user friendly and as universally usable across a broad variety of current and future platforms, are key. Increases in internet access speed, monitor display resolution and computer/smartphone processing efficiency are critical building blocks in this evolution. During the current pandemic era, additional social factors have influenced the direction of, and urgency of technological research. Besides the discomforts and rules of public gathering, the COVID-19 pandemic has caused an increased reluctance in traveling and public transportation, especially for long distance air travel. Together these trends have been the primary forces in fueling developments in virtual travel. As we all know from our recent daily lives, one of the most successful of such ventures has been “Zoom” by Zoom Video Communications. Zoom or Zooming (now both a noun and a verb) is staying put, while at the same time, “being somewhere else” with others most anywhere on earth, as long as, they have decent internet access. With its “killer app” and its free-of-charge for basic use business model, Zoom has experienced a meteoric rise in acceptance as the standard for virtual visits. Even this incredible achievement is subject to technological one upmanship. The Zoom

experience is in two dimensions. Imagine a similar experience in 3-D, a concept being developed using holography. Believe it or not, holography has existed since 1948. Many of us may remember the small reflective discs we carried in our pockets in our youth. In recent years, 3D holography has primarily been used for advertising installations with dramatic, attentiongetting displays, with research emphasis on achieving life-size capability. Companies including JEEP, BMW, Coca-Cola, AVON, Adidas and Volkswagen have invested heavily in the potential of holography. Science fiction (think: Twentieth Century-Fox’s 1958 “The Fly”) and the human imagination have inspired a current group of entrepreneurs to take holography to the next level…teleportation of individuals using the most up to date capabilities of the internet. Each company involved in the evolution of human teleportation, like DVE Holographics of Irvine, California, has its own idea about the future. According to DVE, their “Telepresence Huddle Room” based on an ingenious glass image panel which creates “an immersive, life-size” meeting experience without the need for physical travel, has been a runaway success. The company recently introduced the “Holo-Office”, “Holo-Room” and “Holo-Podium”,
each enabling virtual “Telepresence” most anywhere on earth. DVE has demonstrated “live” stage shows that could be shared at multiple locations worldwide simultaneously. ARHT Media of Toronto has developed a clever business model. Using their “HoloPresence“ technology, ARHT has combined with WeWork and its worldwide network of over 800 flexible work space locations, to offer 100 locations for virtual meetings by the end of 2022, with many more to follow. The future of holographic “travel” is only limited by the human imagination. For the real estate industry, for example, it could mean touring properties “live” with clients without having to physically travel. This would allow for a geometric increase in number of showings per day. Stay Tuned.

Where is everyone going within South Carolina? For starters, they’re heading to Kiawah Island, a barrier island 25 miles from Charleston, which is experiencing a real estate boom of its own. Through September 2021, island-wide sales were $705 million, up from $405 in 2020 and $209 in 2019 — a 57 percent increase year-over-year and a 237 percent increase from 2019. The island is a luxury paradise, for primary homeowners (who comprise about 20 percent) and secondary homeowners alike. The Kiawah Island Club, exclusive to the Kiawah Island property owners, offers members access to two of the top
In fact, the conservation aspect of Kiawah is unique and compelling. Kiawah Island employs two resident wildlife biologists and engages in wildlife programs designed to assist native species. The Lights Out for Turtles program ensures that the beachfront, which is home to nesting Loggerhead turtles, remains dark within the designated season. Biologists monitor the health of the native bobcat population, and tour guides at the island’s nature center offer bespoke natural experiences that emphasize the importance of symbiosis between humans and the natural landscape. Thirty miles of paved bike trails provide ample opportunity to view the island.

WELLNESS
SUPPORT YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM BY TAPP FRANCKE INGOLIA, MS
D
uring the peak of cold and flu season, and with the Omicron variant of COVID-19 still nipping at our heels, it is more important than ever to support our internal defense system known as our immune system. The immune system is an intricate network of cells and proteins that work to defend our bodies from invaders like viruses, bacteria and parasites. This complex system, when it works well, seeks out and destroys these unwanted invaders. Our immune system then keeps record of these intruders and makes special proteins called antibodies to protect you from future attacks from this same pathogen. Here are four simple ways to support your immune system so it can support you. 1. Eat whole foods diet which includes daily consumption of fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and whole grains. I know you have heard this a million times before but there is a good reason for it. These foods are rich in organic compounds called phenols. These phenolic compounds, present in the highest concentrations in the seeds, leaves and skins of plant-based foods are easily absorbed, by the intestinal walls. Phenols act as a potent ant-oxidant. The anti-oxidant’s job is to squelch free radicals which are partial, destructive molecules — otherwise known as the “bad guys”. Free radicals create stress in the body which weakens the immune system. In this time where we are focusing on immune system support, it is more important than ever to give your body as many of the “good guys’ as you can. This means eating a plant-centric diet. One that contains 55% fruits and vegetables (the more colorful the better), 25% well-sourced proteins and 25% nuts, seeds and high-quality fats.
The foods that work against your immune system and create more free radicals are the usual suspects — soda, processed foods, food high in refined sugars, refined carbohydrates and alcohol. Think cookies, breads, chips and sugary sports drinks. Keep these to a bare minimum (none is best). 2. Get Adequate Sleep Sleep, especially deep, restorative sleep is protective of the immune system. During sleep the body releases protective proteins called cytokines. These cytokines seek out and destroy infections as well as control inflammation in the body. Without these cytokines our body is left vulnerable to infections. A 2017 study of otherwise healthy college students showed a significant reduction in antibody protection from the flu vaccine in those who suffered from chronic sleep loss. This means that insufficient sleep reduces your body’s ability to launch a healthy response to an unwanted invader. Don’t skimp on shut-eye! So how much do we need? Newborns (0-3 months): 14-17 hours Infants (4-11 months): 12-15 hours Toddlers (1-2 years): 11-14 hours Preschoolers (3-5): 10-13 hours School Age Children (6-13): 9-11 hours Teenagers (14-17): 8-10 hours Adults (18-64): 7-9 hours Older Adults (65+): 7-8 hours
healthy cytokine levels. Most of us have heard that when you exercise you release hormones called endorphins. Why is that important? Most immune cells require endorphins for proper functioning. These protective chemicals activate the white blood cells that make up our immune system. Inadequate endorphins have been shown to make us more vulnerable to disease. 30 minutes of daily exercise does not need to look like high intensity training. Exercise can be taking a walk, having a home dance party, gardening or taking a bike ride. What is important is that every day you get out and move your body. 4. Get Your Daily Dose of D Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that supports both the innate and adaptive immune response. Known as the sunshine vitamin, D is present in very few foods. Rather it is derived from exposure to the sun. When UVB rays hit the skin, you are able to synthesize this essential nutrient from cholesterol present in our skin. While it is true that too much sun exposure can cause skin cancers and other sun damage such as wrinkles and brown spots, a small amount is vital for our well-being. The issue that we have is that we have come to fear the sun and, as a result, cover up with UVB protection. As sunscreen blocks the body’s ability to create D it is important to spend some time outside without it on. For most people 20 minutes outside every day without it is all that is needed. Once you hit the 20 minute mark put your sunscreen on!
3. Get 30 Minutes of Exercise Every Day Exercise has been shown to be a potent immune system modulator. Exercise, especially consistent, habitual exercise has been shown to decrease inflammatory response, increase metabolic activity, decrease stress hormones and increase
A healthy foundation for a well-functioning immune system is simple — food, sleep, exercise and sunshine. Tapp Francke Ingolia holds a Master’s Degree in Nutrition and Integrative Health. She founded STANDwellness in Water Mill 9 years ago as a way to help people optimize their health.

SPRINGS TIME TO SHINE THE HISTORIC HAMLET IS SEEING A BOOM IN POPULARITY WITH RISING PROPERTY VALUES AND NEW RESTAURANTS ON THE SCENE. BY BEVERLY STEPHEN
T
here’s nothing like a couple of buzzy new restaurants to shine a spotlight on an area. That and attractive real estate prices.
Located in the town of East Hampton, Springs is a small 9.2 square mile hamlet jutting out into Gardiner’s Bay. It’s accessed by Springs Fireplace Road and Three Mile Harbor/Hog Creek Road. It started heating up last season with the opening of Rita Cantina and 300-seat SiSi Mediterranean Bistro in the relaunched EHP Resort & Marina (formerly known as East Hampton Point). The boutique property offers four suites, 13 one and two bedroom cottages, tennis court, pool and a full-service marina which accommodates boats from 25 to 120 feet across 58 slips. Dedicated slips provide “accessibility for those traveling to the resort by yacht,” notes the press release. Stalwarts Bostwick’s also offer spectacular sunsets along with the cocktails and cuisine. “Everything else got overpriced a long time ago. Springs was only the place you could get anything for under $1 million,” says Rita Cantina chef/owner Eric Miller. “Springs is heating up now and houses are selling way higher than before.” Values have risen about 15 percent over the last couple years, but there’s still more bang for your buck. I’ve seen this uptick in sale prices on my own street plus a house twice the size and over twice the price under construction on a lot that was vacant forever.

“Rising property values coupled by a lack of inventory and increasing demand have created a new opportunity in the area for higher end development,” says realtor James Peyton of The Corcoran Group. “My clients, developers Al and Mary Gianquinto of Plum Builders always seem to be at the forefront of these re-transitioning areas and their properties play out to be solid investments over time. And great news! Their first
Pollack-Krasner House
Modern Barn© comes to Springs.” The price tag $3,495,000. It’s not like Springs was unknown before but fashions change from year to year. It was the abstract expressionists like Jackson Pollack, Lee Krasner, Willem de Kooning, who first put the area on the map starting in the 1940s. The art scene suffered a fatal blow when an over-served Pollack crashed his car into a tree on Springs Fireplace Road in 1956. Today the Pollack-Krasner House and Study Center is a small museum. The next wave of attention came from celebrity chef “The 60-Minute Gourmet” Pierre Franey (www.pierrefraney.com) and New York Times journalist Craig Claiborne who cooked up a storm at their homes in Springs putting their imprimatur on a number of visiting up and coming chefs, welcoming celebrity chefs, and producing influential columns and cookbooks. They collaborated on the “grandest picnic of all time” on Gardiner’s Island in 1965 and took part in a gastronomic extravaganza with some of the most famous chefs of the time

celebrating the artists of Springs at Ashawagh Hall in 1970. Now a younger fashion crowd is often filling many of the restaurant seats although Miller is adamant that there is room for everyone. “We have a bilingual staff, and everyone feels welcome from the landscapers to the richest of the rich. Late nights we have a big influx of the Latin community. My mom taught me to be egalitarian,” he says.

SiSi has a more upscale vibe with higher menu prices and a docking ability that allows customers to “arrive by yacht.” The area is flanked on either side by a number of bay beaches with gentle waves particularly suitable for younger children. Kayaks are for rent at the Springs General Store. There are nature preserves and hiking trails. Ocean beaches are about five miles away. It’s also only five miles or
so away from the village of East Hampton with its movie theater, art galleries, shopping, and a number of quality restaurants such as Nick & Toni’s, East Hampton Grill, Rowdy Hall and more. What’s not to like?

MARCH INTO SPRING ST. PATS PARADES, ICE SKATING, THEATER & MORE ON THE EAST END BY ALICE PHILLIPS
Westhampton Beach St. Patrick’s Parade
M
emorial Day weekend may be the “official” start of summer but March is the true herald of the East End summer season. Longer, lighter days, warming weather and St. Patrick’s Day parades beckon us to return to the shores of the East End. ST. PATRICK’S DAY PARADES Get right into the St. Pat’s swing of things by attending the annual fundraiser for the 53rd annual Westhampton Beach St. Patrick’s Parade at The Claddagh on Saturday, March 5 (for more details: www.thecladdaghwhb.com). The parade, which marks the return of many to the East End, is a fun-filled family affair down Main Street starting at noon on March 12. Local groups and businesses compete for best parade float representing this year’s parade theme (which has yet to be determined), including the “Coneheads” – who create a themed float lampooning politics and current events. By the way, don’t even try to find out who they are going to lampoon each year, it’s a tightly guarded secret!
Hampton Bays’ parade is all pipe bands, Irish dancers and youth groups marching right down Montauk Highway on March 19 starting at 11am. Sponsored by the Hampton Bays Hibernians, the parade route begins at the Hampton Bays Elementary School on Ponquogue Avenue to Montauk Highway and west to the reviewing stand, ending in the Hampton Atrium parking lot. The parade features bagpipe bands, various floats, Irish dancers and local youth groups. The 60th Annual Montauk Parade weekend, sponsored by Montauk Friends of Erin, kicks off Saturday, March 26 at the Annual Fundraising Cocktail Party. Tickets are $75; for more information: www.montaukfriendsoferin.org www.montaukfriendsoferin.org.. The parade starts Sunday, March 27 at noon. Wellknown as the “second” largest parade in New York, the Montauk parade has a reputation as a raucous party bar hop among many Montauk eating and drinking establishments. Parade goers are encouraged to take public transportation, including Hampton Jitney and the LIRR.
SEE THE SEALS IN WESTHAMPTON DUNES, MONTAUK AND RIVERHEAD In March and April, harbor seals inhabit the East End coastal waters. While you may happen upon some seals at any point while taking a beach walk along the Atlantic, the Coastal Research and Education Society of Long Island offers guided seal walks at Cupsogue Beach in Westhampton Dunes. New York State Parks hosts seal watching at Montauk Point State Park. If all else fails, you can always visit the harbor seals in residence at the Long Island Aquarium in Riverhead.
