Fully Furnished 11,600 SF, 7 Bedroom Estate for Sale or Rent By James Michael Howard Bridgehampton. Informed by an aesthetic that transcends centuries while celebrating the best of what’s new, Matthews Lane joins the growing resume of highly styled, fully furnished Hampton estates originally produced by James Michael Howard, the renowned ICAA award-winning designer, that exemplify coherency in the abstract world of architecture, interiors and the landscape that contain them. The state-of-theart, eat-in kitchen, with 10-seat breakfast area, is warmed by its own fireplace. Additional common spaces include the media room and an intimate living room. The 1st floor primary wing with sitting area, fireplace and luxurious bath is joined upstairs by 4 guest suites including a secondary primary suite with roof terrace. REALTY CHECK Hot sales and listings...along with the latest real estate news in the Hamptons. BY KAREN DASH Rosemary Lodge Represented by Steven Dorn of Brown Harris Stevens

t’s that time again. Someone somewhere blows a whistle and the season is upon us! This year feels different, though. Is it the economy? The new presidency? Global uncertainty? Who knows. The best thing is to enjoy ourselves as well as we can in this paradise and let the problems take care of themselves, at least for a while.
woodworker, so many of the rooms include builtin seating (a nod to Arts and Crafts). Paneled walls and ceilings are inscribed with quotations from Shakespeare and each ground floor room is paneled in a different wood: ash, cherry, oak, and sycamore. The minister also carved flowers, ships, butterflies and birds into the wood. So charming.
OLD HOUSE LOVERS: YOU WIN SOME One of the stately old grand dames of the Hamptons has been listed for sale. Repped by Brown Harris Stevens agent Steven Dorn, Rosemary Lodge is yours for $14.25 million. It’s a gorgeous old place from the Gilded Age in fabulous condition.
With increasing traffic on Montauk Highway
The house was originally built in 1884. Reverend Henry Turbell Rose, from Massachusetts, purchased a half-acre of farmland from his uncle for $50. (Yes—Rose Hill Road is named after the Rose family, not flowers. See also the Hedges Inn, ha.) Uncle Rose was fine with selling to his nephew as long as his ocean view remained intact. The house is still in the original luscious Shingle Style, with English Arts and Crafts touches (dig the William Morris wallpaper and exposed beams). Reverend Rose was an enthusiastic

during the 80s, the house was moved in 1985 about a half mile away, closer to the ocean. Owners R. Allan Cordingly and Elford A. King reoriented the house to face south on a larger 0.93-acre parcel. Additions and renovations over the years have included a porch and dormer, a pool, and a completely darling pool house that mimics the

main house. Today, Rosemary Lodge includes five bedrooms and four and a half bathrooms set on 4,110 square feet. While retaining original charm, the lodge is completely up to date. The kitchen boasts a pro gas stove and a huge island. The primary suite’s bath is bang up to date, as is the second floor media room which also includes a fireplace. The pool house includes a full bathroom and an outdoor shower. The exterior also includes a lovely rose garden, a vegetable garden, and an outdoor kitchen. There’s an exercise room and even an electric vehicle charging station, ensuring that Rosemary Lodge offers the best of the 19th and the 21st centuries. OLD HOUSE LOVERS: AND YOU LOSE SOME Sigh. OK, we are trying to get the red mist out of our eyes. A rather lovely old house on Further Lane next to the Maidstone Club has been purchased for $12 million by a British real estate developer and then demolished. Douglas Elliman’s Paul Brennan and Martha Gundersen repped both the buyer and seller. British real estate moguls Laura and Nick Capstick-Dale acquired the five-bedroom Arts and Crafts-style home, celebrated for its exposed beams, fairytale charm, and sweeping views of Hook Pond and the Atlantic. Rather than preserve the existing structure, the couple opted to raze it and build anew.
“This off-market sale was an extraordinary one in the way things aligned. It’s probably one of our best deals,” said Brennan. Gundersen added, “The existing home overlooks the Maidstone Golf Club with beautiful views of the pond and golf course, plus, the most awe-inspiring sunsets. It was truly a rare opportunity. Not many houses have sold or changed hands in this area, so this sale was a major coup.” With neighbors including high-profile names like Woody Johnson and unobstructed views of the ultra-private Maidstone Club, homes in this particular location tend to be generational and so come up seldom. The new residence is expected to echo the quiet and traditional history of its setting—we hope so. BUT THEN AGAIN… A waterfront compound of lovely old Sag Harbor houses, owned by top designer and serial renovator Steven Gambrel, sold in February for $21 million. Susan Breitenbach at Corcoran represented the property, which had been asking $25 million. The broker could not be reached for comment. The lucky anonymous buyer scored a restored 1790s main residence, a waterfront guest house, and a stone dining pavilion set on an 0.87-acre parcel on Sag Harbor Cove. There’s a pool and its own dock—extremely coveted features in Sag Harbor! All of Gambrel’s home designs are stunning, not to mention respectful of historic style.
Gambrel bought the property in 2002 for $1.55 million and spent many years restoring the property like a jewel. This is the first time the property has been available for sale. Gambrel also flipped two old houses on Sag Harbor’s Glover Steet; one sold for $6.25 million while the other traded at $6 million. The Market is Back: Hamptons Agents See Surge in Big Sales. BY HEATHER SENISON
I
nventory remains an issue in the Hamptons, but top agents on the South Fork have experienced big sales already this year, they said.
Pricing trends remained robust, with Corcoran’s sales volume East of the canal rising by 39% year-over-year in the first quarter of 2025, the brokerage reported. Its average sales price rose 6% from the first quarter of 2024 to $3.9 million. “With inventory expanding for a fifth consecutive quarter, the stage is set for a dynamic upcoming season.” said Ernie Cervi, Regional Vice President with the brokerage. “I love that people are really starting to commit to some of the larger assets and breaking some records in certain neighborhoods,” said Kyle Rosko, an agent with the Eklund Gomes Team at Douglas Elliman. “The market is very much back.”
42
LOW INVENTORY PERSISTS The Hamptons market for sales since January 2025 “has been interesting to say the least,” said Mary Slattery, an associate broker with the Corcoran Group.
In the late fourth quarter of 2024, Sotheby’s International Realty experienced a roughly 20% increase in closed transactions from that period in 2023, with prices remaining strong, said Dawn Petrillo, an agent with the brokerage.
“It feels a bit like we are on a seesaw,” she explained. “Lots of properties have gone into contract at all price levels, including the very high end, but we are all experiencing less showings than is usual going into the spring selling market.”
“Although inventory has slightly increased, [it’s] still below average, which has led to heightened competition among buyers,” she said.
30 Wall Street, Southampton Represented By Mary Slattery of Corcoran
There are still pockets of East Hampton that get overlooked, Petrie said. “Just north of the highway between East Hampton and Amagansett, there are small cul-de-sacs that offer tremendous value in terms of proximity to the villages and ocean beaches,” he explained. East Hampton Springs is more affordable than the Village and offers a rich history, having once been home to famous artists such as Jackson Pollock and Lee Krasner, Petrillo said. “This artistic background creates a vibrant culture,” she said. “Springs also features calm natural surroundings, providing beautiful views and access to quiet waterfronts.” 68 Stony Hill Rd, Amagansett Represented By James Petrie of Compass
EAST HAMPTON PREVAILS Post-pandemic, East Hampton maintains its prestige, local agents said. The area continues to benefit from its proximity to Amagansett, with the two towns contributing to each other’s growth, said James Petrie, an agent with the Petrie Team at Compass. “The villages are in close proximity to each other and offer similar lifestyles,” Petrie said. “If you’re looking in East Hampton, you will most likely look in Amagansett as well and vice versa.” The average sales price in East Hampton rose 28% year-overyear to $2.8 million in the first quarter, according to Corcoran. Petrillo said her biggest sale of the year so far, which will be around $3 million at closing, is in East Hampton.
Rosko said he recently went into contract 18 Maple Street in Montauk for $18.975 million, beating his previous record at 14 Maple in 2022. With a sold price of $13.9 million, it was the most expensive non-waterfront home ever traded in Montauk, Rosko said.“It’s an unbelievable property,” he said. “I’m very excited for the developer and just for the market in general.”
When choosing an agent, consider their professional history, Rosko added. “Align with representation that has tremendous experience,” he explained. “It will be invaluable.”
HIDDEN GEMS TO EXPLORE Southampton remains “the place to be” for many buyers, as is exemplified by the area’s exceptionally low inventory, Slattery said. “It offers a great little town for shopping and dining and truly incredible beaches,” Slattery said. “Southampton Village is also closer to New York City for those hard-to-commute months.”
Enhance curb appeal in the summer with fresh landscaping, a clean pool, and inviting outdoor spaces, Petrillo advised. “List your home in late spring or early summer to attract more buyers when trees are green, flowers are blooming and pools are open,” she said.
Additionally, “Montauk Hither Hills has properties that are being developed on the ocean there that are absolutely amazing,” Rosko added.
Buyers, meanwhile, should act quickly but wisely, Petrillo added. “Popular homes sell fast,” she said, “so ensure your financing is ready and have proof of funds if you must obtain a mortgage.”
Unlike much of the flat landscape on the East End, this house was built into a 2-acre hillside, she said. “The owners created a fabulous waterfall stream that ends in a lovely garden pond and sitting area surrounded by White Pine trees, ferns and steppingstones,” Petrillo said. The home was on the market for a while before receiving three offers in one weekend at the end of February, she noted, allowing the owner to accept one offer with a backup in place. The house was under contract in eight days. “It’s a fantastic house that was simply waiting for the right buyer to recognize its potential,” Petrillo said.
Buyers and sellers both need to be realistic about the current market, Slattery said. “Everyone wants to find a ‘great deal,’ but in my opinion, those days are long gone,” she said. “Our hope is that we can find the best deal possible for both buyer and seller.”

The designer’s clients wanted some unexpected and contemporary elements in the otherwise classic Hamptons home. Langdon painted the dining room ceiling cobalt blue and included an angular chandelier.
DESIGNER SHOWCASE
From High Point to the Hamptons, designer Libby Langdon brings her signature blend of elegance and ease to every space she touches. BY HEATHER SENISON PHOTOGRAPHY BY LINSEY KROMER
L
ibby Langdon’s love of interior design reaches into her roots. The designer was raised in High Point, North Carolina, known as the “Furniture Capital of the World.”
“I feel like I literally grew up in the home furnishings industry,” she said of her childhood. Her father was in the textiles business, while her mother frequently redecorated their home for the pleasure of the many guests they hosted during Langdon’s childhood. “I loved watching her create beautiful environments people loved spending time in,” Langdon said. After moving to New York City to study fashion design at the Fashion Institute of Technology, Langdon got her start in interior design with an eight-month role for the Fox network show “Design Invasion.” She traveled the country working in “real people’s” homes and problem-solving in real time to meet each episode’s daily deadline, she said. Through the role, Langdon found her calling. “It was truly incredible when the homeowners would come in and see their space completely transformed,” Langdon said. “I still love experiencing that magic today when my clients see their homes come together.”
A DESIGNER OF MANY TRADES Throughout her career, Langdon’s worn a range of professional outfits. She’s been a journalist, with a two-year column in House Beautiful magazine entitled “Libby’s Makeover,” and appeared on HGTV’s “Small Space, Big Style” for five seasons. Langdon designed the golf pro shop and clothing store of the Atlantic Golf Club in Bridgehampton, along with several restaurants in New York City, Rhode Island, Connecticut and Florida, and, in 2009, authored her book, “Libby Langdon’s Small Space Solutions.” Not stopping there, Langdon also designed and licensed collections of furniture, lighting, wall décor and home accessories that are sold by retailers across the country, both online and in-store.

Perhaps her most rewarding endeavor, however, is her volunteer work, Langon said. Notably, she led the redesign of a community center with the nonprofit She Builds, which brings together top women in New York City real estate to tackle community service projects. “It was wonderful to see the reactions of the people who spend time there, knowing how much they would enjoy the brand new, bright and bold look of their community center,” Langdon recalled.
‘EASY’ LIVING IN THE HAMPTONS Over the years, Langdon has described her design approach as “easy, elegant, everyday style.” The “easy” refers to the lack of stress her clients feel working with her, while the “elegant, everyday style” is about having a beautiful home that still accommodates the owner’s “real life,” she said. With its laid-back, coastal vibe, Langdon finds the Hamptons to be the perfect canvas. “Design projects in the Hamptons are some of my favorites because there is a wonderful balance between beautiful, stylish spaces that are also incredibly comfortable and livable,” she said. The designer first visited the Hamptons in 1992 and “absolutely fell in love with the beaches, bays and small-town feel of the villages,” she recalled. In 2003, Langdon gave in to her love of the Hamptons and bought a fivebed, seven-bath cedar shingle in Sag Harbor, which she still owns today.

“Sag Harbor is very special because we have so many wonderful restaurants on the water, the theaters, shops and businesses, but everything is in close proximity and is pretty much in walking distance,” Langdon explained. “It still feels like a small town to me.”
CLASSIC MEETS MODERN IN BRIDGEHAMPTON Among her recent Hamptons projects, Langdon teamed up with architect Eric Woodward to design a seven-bed, nine-bath new construction in Bridgehampton. Langdon weighed in on the initial drawings, helping Woodward accommodate how the clients would live and entertain in the home, down to the smallest details. Elements like floor outlets, wall sconces and picture lights “are imperative for an electrical plan, and it costs nothing to make note of that before the house is built,” Langdon said. “It gets expensive when you need to change things.” Sleek materials and polished finishes in the kitchen, designed and built by Ciuffo Cabinetry, “make it a showstopper in the great room,” she added. While the architecture of the 11,000-square-foot home is a classic Hamptons style, the clients wanted some unexpected and contemporary elements in the design, inspiring Langdon to paint the dining room ceiling cobalt blue and include an angular chandelier. Dramatic chandeliers with drops extending from the second to the first floor accentuate the double-height ceiling in the entryway staircase, she said. The fixtures are mixed with dim recessed lighting and table lamps throughout the home to keep it cozy and inviting. “Lighting is one of the most important elements in any interior design,” Langdon said, “and this large project was no exception!”

THE WELLNESS HUB Today’s Kitchens Emerge As Restorative Spaces— Thoughtfully Composed To Nourish The Senses And Soothe The Soul. BY JAXON WILDE
I
n the most beautifully conceived homes of 2025, the kitchen has quietly evolved into something far greater than a place to prepare meals. It has become a space of restoration—a sanctuary where wellness, elegance, and quiet luxury converge. As homeowners seek deeper connection and calm within their interiors, the kitchen is being reimagined as a personal retreat that nurtures both body and mind. Central to this shift is the rise of biophilic design. Natural materials—hand-finished stone, warm woods, and textural surfaces—bring richness and depth to the modern kitchen. Expansive windows and skylights allow natural light to flood the space,
Bakes & Kropp
while herb walls and integrated gardens introduce living greenery. The effect is grounding, restorative, and alive. Sustainability is no longer a bonus—it’s an expectation. Refined kitchens now feature lowVOC paints, water-based adhesives, and cabinetry crafted from reclaimed or responsibly harvested wood. Recycled glass countertops and ethically sourced stone offer a blend of environmental responsibility and sophisticated aesthetics. Lighting has emerged as a subtle but powerful wellness tool. Circadian systems, which shift in tone and intensity throughout the day, mirror natural light patterns to support focus and rest. Layered lighting—sculptural pendants, under-cabinet illumination, soft ambient glows—enhances both function and mood, bringing comfort and clarity to the everyday. Technology plays a quiet yet transformative role. Refrigerators track inventory and suggest recipes. Steam ovens preserve nutrients. Dishwashers adapt water use based on load size. Touchless faucets and built-in composting systems support sustainable habits without drawing attention to themselves. It’s a design philosophy rooted in ease and intelligence.

Layouts, too, are evolving. Traditional kitchen triangles are giving way to wellness zones— hydration stations, smoothie prep counters, and cozy nooks for tea or journaling. These touches
invite moments of mindfulness into the daily routine. “We believe wellness begins with thoughtful design—spaces that are as nurturing as they are refined,” says Robert Bakes, co-founder and head of design at Bakes & Kropp. “By blending natural materials, elegant finishes, and thoughtful layouts, we create kitchens that promote calm, quiet energy and everyday comfort through ease of flow.” Comfort and accessibility are also priorities. Adjustable-height islands, soft-close drawers, and pull-out shelving make the space more intuitive and inclusive. Rounded corners and thoughtful spatial planning bring both softness and safety to movement within the room. Even air and water quality are now integral to kitchen design. Advanced ventilation systems and motion-sensor faucets help maintain a healthy indoor environment, while smart monitors work quietly in the background to ensure everything remains in balance. Color completes the picture. Stark contrasts are being replaced with muted, nature-inspired tones—sage, sand, pale ocean blue—that soothe the senses and complement the surrounding materials. Ultimately, the kitchen of 2025 reflects how we wish to live: with intention, balance, and beauty woven into each detail. It’s not only where we cook, but where we pause, connect, and restore—a wellness hub at the heart of the home.

From coastal classics to bold new openings, we’re serving up the flavors, chefs, and hotspots defining the East End scene this season. BY BEVERLY STEPHEN
S
urfs up! Traffic is snarled! Beaches are heavenly! Sunsets are sensational! It’s summer in the Hamptons.
Dan’s Rosé Soirée kicks off the season on Memorial Day Weekend at the Southampton Arts Center. It will be followed by a new Fourth of July event called red wine, white wine and beer forward.
This season will see the return The Hamptons Fine Art Fair (HFAF) from July 10–13. From Memorial Day to Labor Day, the season will be punctuated by charity fundraisers, cookouts, wine tastings, art shows, wellness programs, yoga, and summer romance but everybody has to eat. Restaurants are firing up their ranges. Bartenders are shaking up cocktails and more and more mocktails. “The demand for summering in the Hamptons remains high, ensuring a solid business season,” says Mark Smith, owner of Honest Man Restaurants (Nick & Toni’s, Rowdy Hall, and others). Just being near the ocean whets the appetite for seafood, preferably eaten with spectacular sunset views. In East Hampton, casual Bostwick’s on the Harbor offers local seafood and stunning sunsets. The more upmarket SiSi Mediterranean Restaurant, accessible by boat, elevates dining in East Hampton’s Springs area. Tuna tartare, stripe bass or halibut compliments a

crisp white as you watch the sun sink below the horizon on Three Mile Harbor. At the adjoining EHP Resort & Marina guests are treated to complimentary rides abord the 40-foot luxury yacht Van Dutch. In Sag Harbor, The Beacon offers spectacular sunset views. Across the street Sag Harbor Tavern (sister to Red Hook Tavern) looks forward to knocking it out of the park in its second season with its famous $30 cheeseburger. The first Sunset Music of the Season will take place from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday May 23 at the Wolffér Estates wine stand in Sagaponack. There are plenty of sunset watching opportunities out in Montauk where surfing and fishing are added attractions as well as a lively party scene.International flair is on offer at Mostrador at the newish Marram resort where a chef and restaurateur behind popular restaurants in Uruguay and Argentina hold sway. Chef Jared McCarroll sails into his second season at Ocean Club Montauk at the Montauk Yacht Club which boasts the largest marina in the Hamptons with 200 wet slips and a new state of the art spa. Ever popular Duryea’s added four stand-alone Sunset Cottages last season in July. Corporate chef Philippe Corbet oversees all the food operations in Montauk as well as at the Orient Point location and LuLu in Sag Harbor. The generous lobster roll will always be a best seller but there are clams and oysters and a soaring seafood tower. Casa Serena will feed the Page Six celebs, political progeny and other party goers at the Surf Lodge where Chef Robert Sieber rides the range.

SPOTLIGHT Van’s continue to attract. Last season welcomed Arthur & Sons from Michelin star chef Joe Isidori. Guests can expect classic Italian American dishes such as chicken parmigiana and shrimp scampi. Farther east in Amagansett, the ever popular Rowdy Hall has relocated from East Hampton but retains the Rowdy burger, French onion soup, and fish and chips as well as its strong beer program. Top notch Fini Pizza was opened year before last by Sean Feeney. Il Buco is not just a place to eat but also to shop for beautiful tableware imported

Navy Beach is known for prime sunset views and one of the largest selections of rosé wines in the Hamptons. Refreshed Sole East now includes a warm and summery feel with natural shades of white and dark wood, seagrass chairs, and ambient lighting. The Montauk Beach House Bar & Grill now has a Greek accent with Molyvos alum Andres Zeron. El Verano

The Lobster Roll Restaurant (aka Lunch) touts itself as “the place where summer never ends!” Most enduring of all in East Hampton is Nick & Toni’s which opened in 1988. Cocktails and conversations don’t always require a sunset view. In the village of Southampton, 75 Main (“Serving the Hamptons”) is a celebrity magnet— no water view needed. Tony Sant Ambroeus has opened an outpost in East Hampton. Highly regarded Mexican chef Julian Medina will continue to make a splash with El Verano whose décor evokes Mexican summer vacation homes. New additions are an outdoor El Verano Taco Lot and El Farm

If there’s an overload of partying and dining, the peaceful gardens at Longhouse Reserve are a welcome respite. Other gardens worth a detour are the Madoo Conservancy and Bridge Gardens. For a dose of culture check out a quality production at Bay Street Theater in Sag Harbor or the Hampton Theater Company in Quogue or visit the Parish Art Museum in Water Mill. Get Outside! Upgrade Your Outdoor Space With These Summer Essentials. BY HANNAH SELINGER
A
bit of spring cleaning? That applies to the backyard, too. As the weather improves, it’s time to reassess your outdoor space. What upgrades are in store for your yard this year? From fabrics to service ware to furniture to planters, spring is an excellent time to take stock—and to upgrade your spaces where applicable. Our favorite stores on the East End have plenty to choose from. Here’s where to start. Add a bit of whimsy to your backyard fire pit with the addition of new Adirondack chairs. At Rumrunner Home Furniture, in Wainscott, these chic outdoor chairs are available in royal blue and in white. Made from an outdoorfriendly composite material that is easily cleaned (and that can even be powerwashed), these chairs can stand up to the elements—and to even the most
Hildreth's
robust of outdoor gatherings. Pair your chairs with a modern and sleek outdoor fire pit from Sag Harbor Fireplace. The retailer carries luxe offerings from many different manufacturers. Among our favorites? The customized Gneiss boulders, fashioned into fire masterpieces from the fine folks at Waterstone. Upgrade your outdoor sitting area, too, with a visit to Serena & Lily, also in Wainscott. The retailer sells large-format rugs, pulling together patio spaces (the 11 x 14 Kittery Rug, in Coastal Blue, is made from polypropylene and can stand up to all the elements and all the seasons). The Pacifica outdoor collection, which includes sofas, ottomans, sectionals, and benches, is made from a light wicker weave that is bright and playful. Sunbrella fabrics can be customized to match whatever your outdoor space requires. Add to the look a series of Summerland Outdoor Lanterns (also fashioned from wicker) and you’ve got an outdoor living room that will set the scene for a summer to remember. Embrace a bit of the sea this summer with a whole new outdoor tablescape. At Hildreth’s, in Southampton, tuck into a maritime look with serving platters that recall a bit of the ocean. Manufacturer Caskata offers a line of plates, mugs, and platters with striking iconography: crabs, shells, lobsters, octopus. They’re available in red and blue colorways and in a variety of sizes to fit the style of your outdoor service. Pair them with tea towels from Hildreth’s (block-printed with sardines, naturally) and you’ve got a table that’s fit for a sea-loving queen.

And don’t ignore those florals. Spring is as good a time as any to up the ante on your planters. Take stock of cracked ceramics and invest in new— and beautiful—homes for both annuals and perennials. At Marder’s, in Bridgehampton, the garden shop, set in the backdrop of a 19th century barn, is the perfect place to peruse new planting options. Consider your colorways and look to stagger different heights, shapes, and sizes for visual interest. Planting perennials that bloom in stages can also change the look and feel of your outdoor space, so consider where you intend to place your pots, how you plan to group them, and what they will look like at all points in the season.

Opening Soon... These East End Restaurants are Opening Soon for the Summer. BY HANNAH SELINGER
H
ot sand. Cool ocean. Long days that sunset into perfect nights. Summer, at long last, has arrived. Every May, the East End is busy with restaurant openings—some seasonal and established, others brand-new—the signifier that the season is back in full swing. From Montauk to Sag Harbor, here are some of our notable openings for the 2025 season. In Sag Harbor, The Beacon opens for its 27th season this May. Perched overlooking the water— and imbued with a long deck and tall windows that provide among the best sunset views on the East End—this de rigueur summer spot will once again lean into local produce and fish, with dishes like the summer watermelon salad with arugula and mint; the blackened local fish over broccoli rabe and a potato purée; and sesame-crusted tuna with
Bostwick's on the Harbor
Napa cabbage-jicama slaw and soba noodles. This is a restaurant (and a view) that absolutely never gets old. Montauk will welcome two dining concepts this summer, both at Gurney’s Montauk Resort & Seawater Spa. The first, gigi’s montauk, will be the property’s flagship restaurant, highlighting coastal cuisine within a refreshed space. Local ingredients will define the menu, and a renovation of the dining space will add to this destination restaurant that overlooks the ocean in the desirable Hither Hills area of Montauk. The flagship restaurant will define the property’s dining program, with produce and seafood sourced from Montauk and eastern Long Island, and a coastal motif that blends in with the open-air charm of the ocean.
The Dune Café, a place where guests of the hotel can grab light fare in the mornings (as well as superlative coffee), will transform, in the evenings, to a raw bar and cocktail lounge. The space, once Tillie’s—a casual dining venue that drew a substantive lunch crowd—is redefining itself as one of the restaurants that visitors to Montauk must visit this summer season. Initially launched in February as a pilot program for hotel guests only, the café will broaden its reach, establishing itself as a destination all its own. On Thursday, May 22, Sean MacPherson’s see-andbe-seen spot in Montauk, The Crow’s Nest, returns for its 16th season. The summer-only restaurant has gone through a few changes this year, with updates to the menu that include a Mecox Bay Dairy cheese plate, served with local honeycomb, dark chocolate, and raspberries; an appetizer of lobster salad, with truffled herbs, toasted bread, and burnt lemon; a salade Niçoise, featuring Montauk yellowfin tuna, potatoes, haricots vert, and a tapenade soubise; and shrimp kebabs, marinated in parsley, rosemary, lemon, and urfa biber. Bostwick’s on the Harbor, in East Hampton, is also back for another season. With a raw bar that includes local littlenecks, oysters, and tuna, and a never ending view of Three Mile Harbor, this restaurant should appear on everyone’s “before Labor Day” dining checklist. North Fork steamer clams, served with drawn butter, are an essential order, as is the broiled Montauk fluke, served beneath an herb-panko crust and accompanied by lemongrass-scented rice, asparagus, and a beurre blanc.

Georgia Suter Explores The Human Condition. One River Two Currents
BY HEATHER BUCHANAN
I
n a world of uncertainty, the work of painter Georgia Suter is especially timely, exploring themes of human relationships: connection and disconnection. Well respected Hamptons artist and curator Paton Miller calls her, “a refreshing young artist, bold in her compositions.” Suter’s work portrays two individuals in a setting which can indicate their connection such as a duo playing tennis but then also their disconnection, a competition with a net in between them. Suter comments, “I like to paint figures as silhouettes to take away their personal characteristics. The painting becomes more about the relational dynamic, what it feels like to be alone or together, to be part of a community or an individual.” Growing up, Suter’s family moved around quite often so these themes are very familiar to her. Both her parents are artists, her mother a painter and

her father at the time was a political illustrator for The New York Times and Washington Post. She recalls, “My dad was always drawing, at the kitchen table and dining room. He would take us to diners and draw on napkins.” This freedom of work allowed her family to move around the East Coast. “We didn’t have to live anywhere, and my parents wanted to give us different perspectives,” she said of the experience, “It was a lot of transience, but it made me independent.” This gave Suter first-hand knowledge of being an outsider and questioning how to create roots when you don’t have history or finding belonging in a community where you are new.
freedom and connection to nature.” She now enjoys a home in Sag Harbor with a former chicken coop as a studio. “In my apartment in Brooklyn working with oil paint felt toxic,” she recounts, “Out here I have outside and a breeze.” This creates freedom to use oil paint, her favorite medium. “I think it really glows. Oil paint has a richness in its colors and is almost beaming off the canvas.” And in the search to make her own community, Suter has found a group of young artists in the Hamptons. “It doesn’t feel competitive,” she explains, “It feels like we support each other and are friends, going to each other’s shows and
“In college I majored in journalism and minored in studio art,” she says, “Then after graduation I took classes at the Art Students League in New York City. With words there are limits, but with color there are infinite modes of expression. I like how painting brings me out of my head into the external world.” Suter’s work is designed to allow interpretation since you do not see a happy or unhappy expression on her subjects’ faces. One painting depicts a long table with a diner at each end and multiple candles in between.
