BUSY SUMMER SEASON PREDICTED BUYERS REMAIN MOTIVATED TO INVEST IN THE HAMPTONS

he Hamptons real estate market is expected to be vibrant this summer! New construction and waterfront are in great demand. Properties under $2M are seeing historic activity. And Westhampton Beach, Sag Harbor, and Montauk are hot. Predictions are that this will be the busiest summer yet for the Hamptons! Judi Desiderio of Town & Country Real Estate says, “While the 2016 East End real estate market started off to a slow start, as the weather heated up, so went our real estate market! I expect it will be the busiest summer yet — buckle in! The below $5M range is most active. Westhampton Beach, Montauk and theVillages of East Hampton and Southampton are hot. New construction is always under great demand. Prices are in a holding pattern and inventory in most markets is balanced, so the supply and demand are in check.” Judi reflects, “With the election, the projection for interest rates, and the stock market trajectory, the real estate market can go in just about any direction. But everything’s cyclical.”

Marcy Braun of Nest Seekers International says, “Sales have been steady with a significant increase in East Hampton Town over the last two quarters. Summer rentals have been slower than expected, as many potential renters have bought homes and others are renting for shorter terms. Sag Harbor and

Montauk are hot. We have seen some large price reductions on some properties. Inventory is still high, and we have seen an increase in new construction coming to market. Once these hit the market we may see a shift back to a buyers’ market.” Marcy predicts, “Sales will continue to remain stable throughout the year, however buyers are cautious this is an election year and everyone is watching the financial markets.” Richard Demato of Brown Harris Stevens says, “We are seeing multiple offers on wisely priced properties and consistent high demand for special properties: historic, village, and on the water. Shorter-term rentals within all price points are in growing demand. Sag Harbor is experiencing a renaissance of sorts. North of the highway has seen a tremendous growth of new construction. Over 58% of the sales are historically below $2M. Inventory can be tight at certain price points. Waterfront options are lacking, trophy properties, and those under $2M are less available.” Richard remarks, “This is the Hamptons, it’s a global paradise, and people will always want to be here. The unique opportunities: water, boating, horses, and dining will always create a demand and sustain a very resilient sales environment.” Marcia Altman of Brown Harris Stevens says, “The market has been consistent and rising slightly

For homes in great condition and in great locations, the prices have reached the highs of 2006 and 2007, while inventory in the Hamptons is dwindling.” Marcia remarks, “If the second half of 2016 is anything like the first half, I’m in.” Cynthia Barrett of Compass says, “After an erratic start, the 2016 real estate market rebounded in the second quarter, both in rentals and sales in key areas and price points. The under $1-3M range is most active as are the villages, waterfronts, and farm view properties. There is a tremendous amount of new construction. As prices have exceeded the 2008 highs, there has now been a pullback in asking prices across all sectors. Inventory is high in the over $20M range.” Cynthia predicts, “The market might be a bit sluggish going into the presidential election. Although, as homebuyers continue to fund the 2% Land Tax to preserve the integrity of the area’s gorgeous white beaches, farmland, inlets, bayfronts, and wooded reserves, the Hamptons will always be a real estate homerun.”

The ad – really more a short film – helmed by acclaimed director Baz Luhrmann (known for such works as Moulin Rouge! and The Great Gatsby), features supermodels scampering about the Bates Masi-designed 10,000-sf manse with 300 feet of ocean frontage. The nine-bedroom, 10.5 bath edifice is “by far the most spectacular house I’ve seen, and I’ve been doing this a long time,” according to listing agent Susan Breitenbach of Corcoran.

Coastal Living Showhouse Coastal Living is hosting its first Hamptons show house in a 6,800 square-foot home at 272 Brick Kiln Road in Bridgehampton. Not a Laughing Matter Preservationist Sally Spanburgh has sent out an email beseeching readers to save Laffalot,one of the original eight Dutch Colonial Revival cottages in Southampton’s Art Village. All but one of the residences, built in Shinnecock in the 1890s to house artists attending William Merritt Chase’s school, are still intact (one was razed in the ‘50s.) As Chair of the Southampton Landmarks & Historic District Board, Spanburgh’s appeal was in response to a demolition application from the current owner. While the board cannot deny the application, the hope is that with an outcry the owner’s mind will be changed. Letters can be sent to sspanburgh@southamptontownny.gov. The textile designer, artist, founder & head designer of LULU DK was born and raised in New York City, spending her childhood “between the electric streets of Manhattan, and the colorful and sun-drenched beaches of the Hamptons and Bahamas.” Lulu returns to the Hamptons for summers with her husband Alfredo Gilardini and their towheaded twin boys. “I grew up in the Hamptons. From the time I was born, my family had a house in Quogue. Growing up, we came out every weekend, some holidays and the whole summer. My husband is Italian, so now we are also between Italy and Southampton, where we have a house now.”

HRES: How would you describe your work to our readers? Lulu: Because of my love for geometry and graphics, travel and color, my work always takes on a kind of graphic meets ethnic vibe. Usually the color plays the most important part. I love how certain colors sit side by side, and I play with that a lot in my paintings and designs. HRES: How do your bedding designs for Matouk differ from your paintings? Lulu: I always feel like the pattern has a to be a little softer and gentler, so they really mimic my love for pastels and my love for the perfect pale blue men’s shirt − don’t you just love a man in perfect pale blue button down? I throw a little more POP with the towels and

throw pillows…because we all love a splash of POP in the summer! HRES: What does your design process look like? Lulu: I have a visual, photographic memory and literally remember beautiful things in nature that I see. I take a personal snap shot in my head and then try and repeat whatever inspiration was absorbed from that moment. That is always how I paint - it always comes from my head. HRES: Bragging rights... Tell us about one of your current listings? TM: We have a great range of listings right now from starter beach houses to high end luxury. Right now we are marketing some exceptional properties that are more on the modern style architecture. It’s a departure from the standard traditonal hamptons home and they have been very well received.

BB: Tyler and I have a good inventory of Modern homes in East Hampton and Sagaponack... It’s nice to see something a little different than a traditional or a Gambrel. HRES: What is both of your favorite summertime activity in the Hamptons? TM: Surfing when there are waves and beach time with my wife and son.

BB: Spending time with my fiancé when we can both get the time off. Going to the beach or catching some live music outdoors.

HRES: If you could both have one super human power, what would it be? TM: I’d love to be able to teleport myself anywhere in the world. I’d get a morning surf in in Indonesia and be back in time for my afternoon appointment. Haha

AFTER CALDER SCULPTOR GEOFF KUZARA MAKES THE MOBILE NEW

T

he mobiles and sculptures of Geoffrey Kuzara are an expression of the Wyoming native’s long immersion in the natural world. And yet he is not the kind of artist who deals in faithful renderings of flora and fauna. All the wild creatures in his remarkable bestiary--herons in repose, raptors in flight, monolithic fishes--suggest elemental forms. Built to a purpose, they are like Platonic ideals of animals, the first and last of their kind. Kuzara is a rare bird himself. He did not come to art until he was in his forties, by which time his curriculum vitae included stints as a backcountry guide, a ski patrolman, a re-forester, a ranch hand, an archeological and geological surveyor, and a bicycle mechanic. One of nine children, he was reared on a farm he describes as “a wonderland of disused mining, farming, and ranching equipment from the turn of the last century,” that arose from the spectral remains of his paternal grandfather’s old coal mining settlement. The back of his Springs home overlooks an open pasture whose current occupant, a twelve-foot-long fish (fashioned out of white oak using a chainsaw, a plane, and an angle grinder) shimmers and dissolves into the high grasses like a mirage. Kuzara knows tools,

having been obliged as a farmer’s son to fabricate the ones he needed from the materials at hand. This early training in subsistence living, which encompassed mechanical engineering, physics, chemistry, and what he calls “the playful art of creative problem solving,” equipped him with the skills that allow him to manipulate wood and steel, creating pliable structures that don’t so much inhabit a space as move through it. The most obvious influence on his work is Alexander Calder, but while Calder’s mobiles were fixed in space, Kuzara’s assemblages change in response to the light and the weather: a breeze or a gust of air through an open doorway is enough to set them aflutter, prompting the viewer to see them anew.

“When I told people I wanted to make mobiles, they responded that Calder owned the mobile. They said he had taken it as far as it could go. I saw that as a challenge,” says Kuzara. Each one, whether welded together from sheets of stainless steel or carved out of found wood--mahogany, black walnut, maple-can take weeks to complete. Steele Antiques in East Hampton, has been selling Kuzara’s work for the last decade, mostly to designers. “Recently,” says Steele, “I placed an outsized Kuzara mobile in an 8,000-square foot apartment on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. It was fascinating to observe how the artwork made the room come alive.”

“Notable people of taste like Matt Lauer and Calvin Klein have been quietly acquiring Geoff ’s work for years,” notes Laura Grenning, who shows him at her Sag Harbor gallery. olorful flowers in a summer garden are pure delight and for many of us, an essential part of the joy of the season. Consider the rich blue hydrangeas and the multitudes of roses in shades of red, pink, orange, yellow and white that are blooming across the East End now. Adding fragrance to the garden palette deepens and enriches our appreciation of flowers. Of our five senses, smell delivers the richest and most enduring experience. The memory of a scent associated with a certain event, place or person in our lives can remain with us always. Including some fragrant blossoms in your garden or landscape brings special pleasure to summer living. Luckily, many flowers that are deliciously scented as well as colorful thrive in East End gardens. Some grow on shrubs, some are perennials that die back in winter but return to the garden year after year, and others are annuals that are with us for a single growing season and are planted anew each spring. There are many kinds of floral fragrance. Flowers can smell fruity and sweet, like orange blossoms or heliotrope (which was in times past compared to cherry pie), honey-scented, like sweet alyssum, or

BY ANNE HALPIN spicy and clove scented, like stocks or old-fashioned carnations and garden pinks. Some flowers have an aroma reminiscent of vanilla—sweet peas are a good example. Other flowers smell like violets – some tulips have this kind of scent. There is, of course, the incredible, unmistakable fragrance of damask roses. And still other flowers, many of them from tropical climates, possess a heady perfume that is strong, sweet and almost overpowering. Jasmine and gardenias fit into this category. Here on eastern Long Island these tropical beauties can’t survive the winter, but we can enjoy them for a summer season on a deck or patio. If you are here year-round, your garden can begin wafting perfume your way in spring, from shrubs and trees such as lilacs, mock orange, magnolias, some viburnums, and in the dark, chilly days of February or March, witch hazel. To perfume the air on your deck or patio to enjoy up close, some fragrant plants to grow in pots, window boxes or other containers include sweet alyssum, nicotiana, jasmine, petunias, sweet peas, heliotrope (especially antique varieties), stocks and verbena. To bring delightful scents to your summer garden, consider adding

to a bed or border lavender, peonies, bearded irises, lilies, phlox, beebalm, scented geraniums, Peruvian daffodils (a tender bulb with wonderfully fragrant white trumpets) and, of course, roses, especially heritage, or old fashioned, varieties. The rugosa rose, native to Japan, is a fixture in many summer gardens here on the East End, where they also can be found growing in supermarket parking lots and along the street near the beach.Although native to Japan, rugosa roses are remarkably well suited to our coastal climate, and their intoxicating blossoms are pure delight. WHITHER MONTAUK PRESERVING A WAY OF LIFE AT “THE END”

M

ontauk has changed rapidly in the past few years. While the Montauk from my childhood in the 1970s didn’t look much different than it does now--I remember buying candy in White’s with my allowance, chasing my brothers and sisters around the tiny IGA, swimming at Ditch Plains—the atmosphere is much changed, even from the early 2000s. Resident Nancy Atlas says, “Twenty years ago it was truly a family destination with people coming out for the whole week or even month to bask by the sea, get sunburned and fish. Now it seems to be have a much younger draw to it. It’s a different tone across the board.” Residents as well as those who love and cherish Montauk are worried about the rate of change. Town institutions such as Duryea’s, the Shagwong, and Trail’s End have changed hands; the enormous property portfolio of the Gosman family has recently been put on the market, and old motels are disappearing. The tourists are younger and richer, rather than the families Montauk used to cater for. Now most hotels and restaurants are aimed at the bottle-service crowd.

The 1950s Polynesian-themed Ronjo is now the Montauk Beach House, with poolside DJs and costs up to $750 a night. The midcentury Panoramic View motel is now the Residences at Gurney’s, where your residence will run up to $12M. And Bob and Dee’s Lakeside Inn is now the ultra-hip, ultra-pricey Surf Lodge. Real estate values have soared. A property that would sell for $100,000 in the 1970s and just $350,000 as late as 1999 would cost close to $3 million today. Theresa Eurell, sales manager with Town & Country and a Montauk resident, says, “Prices have skyrocketed! The town is very trendy now. Ten years ago Montauk was a small family getaway—now it’s young professionals looking for a weekend party!” While that’s good news for long time owners, it’s bad news for middle-class families who can’t afford to buy. PJ Delia, who grew up in Montauk, says, “I’ve seen it go from there being a shortage of housing because there simply weren’t that many houses or buildings,

to ten times as many houses and buildings with still nowhere for locals to live. It seems much more difficult now because the money is crazy. “A village with no year-round working families can become an empty shell that is only filled in season. Year-round families who don’t own their property already can’t afford to buy or rent here in Montauk. New middle class families can’t move to Montauk for the same reason. That is death for any village. That is a problem.” Nancy Atlas says, “The only solution I see is the town coming in to make some sort of affordable housing option. So many families are leaving because they can’t find a place to rent. People want to get the big summer rental money and who can blame them? I am seeing a big drop off in the attendance numbers at the grade school out here and it’s heartbreaking. My ten-yearold son had forty in his class, my four-year-old has about 22, and my two-year-old has about seven that I even know about. It is a very real problem.” And the squeeze is hitting summer workers as well as fulltime residents. Some motels that previously

housed low-income workers are now being converted either into summer rentals or employerowned worker housing. Most recently, Marc Rowan, the new owner of Duryea’s and Arbor restaurant purchased the Neptune Motel to house summer workers. The owners of Gurney’s Inn bought Tiny Underwood’s and the Lido Motel to house summer workers. Between 500-600 staff housing units may have been removed from the low-priced market in Montauk. The rentals at Rick’s Crabby Cowboy, formerly with year-round tenants, are now summer-only at higher prices. Ideas differ about how to house summer workers: one is to build dormitories. Another is to improve public transportation, so that workers can be housed farther away from Montauk. The East Hampton rental registry, implemented this year, is intended to deal with the problem of illegal, crowded summer rentals. PJ says, “So many people were renting in a way that respected the neighbors and the water table for so long. Then some greedy people started cramming tons of people in homes illegally, basically running dangerous, polluting de facto motels. Blame the illegal motel owners for that registry. If not for them, it wouldn’t have come to this.”

Something that’s unique about Montauk is the amount of parkland. More than 70 percent of the town is preserved as parks, which of course limits the amount of buildable land. Another interesting thing about Montauk real estate is the number of micro-markets. There are homes asking $55M down to Montauk Manor condo units for $169K, and everything in between. There are home by the ocean, by the bay, by the lake, by the pond; by the golf course, there are tiny vintage Leisuramas to massive McMansions, sometimes on the same block. But one thing has not changed about Montauk and never will: the love it inspires among so many. PJ Delia sums it up when she says, “I hope that everyone starts working together to cherish the things that make Montauk, Montauk. Help preserve the rest of the beaches, mellow musical sunsets, surfing areas, fishing, shark tagging, and beauty that brought people here to begin with. Keep those wonderful things and the others who love Montauk will come to join those who never left.”

MILLION DOLLAR TRAILER PARK HIP BILLIONAIRES ARE DRAWN TO MONTAUK SHORES

A

mobile home park in the tony Hamptons? You betcha. Sometimes called “the milliondollar trailer park,” the 20-acre community has got arguably the best views on the entire East End. And access to Ditch Plain beach, a surfing mecca. Which is why several hip billionaires have pitched tent, I mean, trailer there. Actually, Montauk Shores Condominium did begin life as a campsite in the 1940s. Campers slept under the stars or even in cabooses rescued from the Long Island Rail Road. In 1976, a group of 152 regulars – many of them firemen whose heirs are still there today – banded together to buy the property after the original owners filed for bankruptcy. They divided the land into 199

parcels, each plot priced at $10,000. And one of the original settlers, Alpha Doughan, sold his neighbors trailers at $5,000 a pop. Today there are 152 individually owned sites and 47 leased sites. What that means is that you can own the land on which your trailer sits (more expensive) and pay relatively low quarterly maintenance fees (circa $400) or buy the trailer and lease the land from management and pay roughly $1,450 in monthly payments. The two-dozen trailers that line the bluff overlooking the ocean, known as the front row, garner the highest prices. In the past five years, Corcoran’s Peter Moore, who laughs at his dubious distinction as “the trailer

park king,” has sold three oceanfront properties: to a hedgefunder, former Goldman Sachs partner and ex-CEO of Saatchi and Saatchi. The latter wrapped his dilapidated trailer (he wasn’t able to move it out) in aluminum and plunked on a teak deck. “He put a million bucks into it.” Then he flipped it to a guy who had sold his company, Vitaminwater, to the CocaCola Company for a king’s ransom. Of course, these are not the owners’ primary or even secondary residences. “They’re used as surf shacks,” says Moore, who works with his wife, Lois. “They don’t even stay over, it’s their cabana.” One owner, who also has a $20 million house in Sagaponack, stays at his unit when his wife entertains. “I refer to it as silly money. Those in the front row pay way over the


M O N TA U K historic value.” This is partly due to the fact that those units rarely come to market. The Moores currently have a listing for a doublewide trailer, three back from the ocean side. “It’s a ‘pullaway,’” says Moore, which is another way of saying a ‘tear down.’ The musty 700-sf unit with 2 bedrooms and 1.5 baths is priced at $639,000 and Moore expects it to get close to the asking price. near the community pool, has been updated to the standards of any Hamptons house, replete with highend fixtures, marble countertops and barn-board accents. The 4-bedroom, 1.5-bath trailer is listed with Lisa Grenci of Douglas Elliman for $625,000. Greg Burns of Compass has the listing on a 500-sf unit asking $675,000. Well-known Hamptons caterer Janet O’Brien, who

also surfs, purchased her oceanfront unit 11 years ago. “It was just one of those moments,” she says. No sooner had the thought entered her mind that a Montauk trailer would be a nice home away from her main Sag Harbor residence, when a friend took her straight to the park. She had to act quickly because “my particular trailer would have gone fast.” Indeed, it boasts unimpeded views to the break. In retrospect, it is one of the best decisions she has ever made.

MONTAUK SALT CAVE HALOTHERAPY TREATMENT COMES TO THE EAST END

ortunately my sinuses were not clogged, but I felt them clear anyway as I breathed in the mineral-saturated air at the Montauk Salt Cave. Known for their health benefits, salt chambers are popping up all over the country. And “if it’s ‘groovy,’ it ends up in Montauk,” says realtor Lois Moore in Corcoran’s Montauk office. More than trendy, the salt cave is a godsend for those who suffer respiratory ailments (including colds, allergies and bronchitis) and other conditions such as psoriasis and eczema, according to owner Shannon Coppola. Several clients who frequented the cave this winter were able to stop using their prescription meds. One asthma sufferer, who also used a salt air inhaler available at the facility, “got through the winter without being hospitalized or using her rescue inhaler.” A man with COPD also avoided the hospital, a relative miracle. Lisa Cotter, who works the front desk, has stopped having migraines.

Coppola and her husband imported three tons of pink Himalayan salt from Nepal and built the igloolike room with salt bricks, strewing the floor with salt crystals. They were aided in the construction by Margaret Smiechowski, who hails from Poland where salt caves have been used therapeutically for eons. “In Poland there are even churches built in underground salt caves,” says Smiechowski, whose specialty is recreating the microclimate of a real cave. I was led barefoot into the cave where I reclined on a zero-gravity lounge chair (used for its flotation qualities), which was poised before a “fireplace” salt sculpture lit by a pair of salt lamps, giving the room a warm glow. As I relaxed to the sound of crashing waves, a “halogenerator,” spewed out millions of micron-size salt particles, which I ingested in deep breaths. Himalayan salt, mined by hand from caves that formed 250 million years ago, is said to contain the 84 trace minerals and elements that are found in the human

body, and is “anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, antiviral, antifungal, and anti-microbial,” says Coppola. “It clears pollens, viruses and toxins.” She ought to know. From the time her son was born he suffered intense allergies and reflux, and “never slept or napped, ever.”That is, until his first salt cave session at age four. Coppola remembers the date well: December 13 2014, the first time he slept through the night. Now six, he is so symptom-free that the family was able to adopt a dog this year, an aged Weimeraner made famous by its previous owner, Phil Berg, in his book Travels with Uma. But the skeptic in me wanted to know: Couldn’t I just walk on the beach for the same affects? “One 45-minute session is equal to being at the beach, sitting in front of the surf, for five days,” says Coppola. The halogenerator produces particles that are “more concentrated.” The room is also used for classes such as kundalini meditation and massage and has proved so popular that she is building a second one in Huntington.

ARTISTS YOU NEED TO KNOW BY HEATHER BRYCE Storm Chaser Former commercial artist Dalton Portella now earns his living as a fine artist, photographer, and sometime musician. After a successful career in advertising, the last decade creating movie posters for Miramax Films –from Pulp Fiction to Aviator – he moved to Montauk to “forsake the almighty dollar to concentrate on fine art.” When he’s not at work, he can be found riding the surf on the beach near his Montauk house and studio, playing his own tunes on guitar or getting people to move to the beat of his percussion instruments. He works in watercolors or oil on canvas, often adding such things as gravel to give the surface texture. His stunning series of sharks moving magnificently through water began when he photographed the

sand tiger variety at the Long Island Aquarium in Riverhead. He then went on to do cave diving ten-miles out to sea with Sea Turtle Charters on West Lake Drive, where he took pictures of blue sharks. “I look for subject matter when I create a series that has meaning,” he says. His mission is to “draw attention to the beauty of sharks and make people aware of their plight.” For his bird series he started by painting a bird skeleton for about a year. He then moved on to painting a dead bird he found while on vacation in Brazil.A series of blue jays that happened to dive-bomb him followed. Nowadays people call him up to report sightings, most recently a hawk on the side of Route 27. His studio contains a shelf of carcasses, which he calls his bone yard. “Birds are symbolic of spirituality and peace.” While his work centers around the representational, it touches on abstraction in his birds.

A true storm watcher, he shoots “almost every storm that comes by.” For these he “marries the sky from one, the ocean from another and put them together,” he says.“It’s a modern approach to the classic maritime art that Winslow Homer or Turner would have done, but using modern technology.” The dramatic images went viral a couple of years ago. He’s represented by Outeast Gallery in Montauk, Sara Nightingale Gallery in Water Mill, Solar in East Hampton and Monika Olko Gallery in Sag Harbor.

South Fork’s easternmost village two years ago and decided to stay put. She moved into a new studio in June, a former stable overlooking a paddock. Roemer arrived in town with the goal of painting portraits of ten percent of the village’s population. So far she’s painted more than 200 startling likenesses of locals, works that she installed all over town from the Blessing of the Fleet to Eddie Ecker Park. What’s even more interesting is that her medium of choice was hand-me-downs donated by the local populace: handkerchiefs, pillowcases, cloth napkins. With a strong focus on repurposed materials in all her work, her larger works are often executed on old bed sheets.

As in Montauk, she often uses community as a platform for creation. She recently returned from Indonesia where she recruited indigenous people to incorporate their traced handprints onto a ship’s sails. She then painted the sails with the area’s mythological creatures. For the colors she asked a local to find her hues that represented the seafaring region. When that person gave her a piece of driftwood, Roemer took it to a paint shop where the brown, white, teal and bright blue were duplicated. She was recently commissioned by La Isla Foundation, an NGO researching an epidemic of Chronic Kidney Disease affecting sugarcane workers in Nicaragua.Her directive:to paint dozens of portraits

of the deceased workers. “They’re being worked to death,” she says. Because of the seriousness of the project, she is rendering the images in red, and then giving them to the surviving families. While volunteering to help refugees on Lesbos this past winter and spring, she photographed women and children. After turning the images into negatives, she printed them on the discarded clothing of earlier refugees. “It was literally the shirts off their back.” Meanwhile, she is planning to have another installation of the Montauk portraits this summer as she continues to add more to her collection.

REMEMBERING RUSTY DRUMM LOCAL WRITER, LEGENDARY SURFER, AND CO-FOUNDER OF THE MONTAUK SURF MUSEUM

M

ontauk will not be the same without Russell “Rusty” Drumm, legendary surfer, fisherman, writer, and co-founder of The Oceans Institute of the Montauk Lighthouse Museum, aka The Montauk Surf Museum, that just opened last summer. Born in Syracuse, NY on February 8, 1947, raised in Levittown, Long Island, Rusty passed away on January 16, 2016 at the age of 68. He spent over 40 of those years in his favorite place on earth, Montauk, where he had resided since 1974. Here he expressed himself through surfing, fishing, writing, and in “The End,” dedicating his life’s passion to the co-founding of The Montauk Surf Museum, a legacy that he will leave for generations to come. Despite his many extraordinary accomplishments, including a Master’s Degree in film from Columbia University, Rusty was a “humble” man, soft-spoken, mild-mannered, and kind to everyone he encountered. He had so many friends from all walks of life who loved and respected him. He took on causes that had meaning not just to him, but also to the Montauk community at large. As a writer for The East Hampton Star for 33 years, he wrote about fishermen’s rights, the environment, surfing, nature, and whatever topic intrigued him. He also was the author of three books. But it was the ocean that inspired him, that first drew him out to Montauk. His fascination with the ocean lasted throughout his life as a surfer, fisherman, and explorer of nature. He was eager to spread his lifelong

knowledge about ocean currents, sea-level rise, and the formation of waves in his vision that became a reality last summer, The Montauk Surf Museum, located in the former Fog Signal House constructed in 1896 at The Montauk Point Lighthouse. Rusty Drumm’s purpose for the museum was to focus on geography, oceanography, and meteorology to introduce people to the physics, nature, and history of surfing and how it got to the east coast and Montauk from its Polynesian origins. Several installations and displays would illustrate the many aspects of surfing, from the origins of waves to the evolution of surfboard design and wetsuit technology, to coastal phenomena such as erosion and sea-level rise. As Rusty acknowledged, “The concept of the museum is to use the popularity of surfing as a way to help visitors to the museum understand the science behind surfing.” Rusty first took up the sport of surfing in Hawaii in the mid-1960s, where his father worked for a few summers as a hospital administrator. Back on Long Island, Rusty was among a group of surfers from Levittown (including surfing buddy Tony Villar) who surfed the Gilgo Beach area, notably the surf spots Hemlocks and Democrat Point, before coming out to Montauk. Rusty drew inspiration and happiness from his loving wife, Kyle Paseka, his daughter Melissa,

and his precious granddaughter Quinn, born June 2, 2015. Rusty introduced Melissa to surfing at an early age in Montauk. She then surfed at some of the best surfing spots around the world, including Hawaii. She later studied at The University of Hawaii, before returning back to the East End to raise a family. Rusty and Kyle met in 2004 and were married in 2008, the third marriage for both. They were like two peas in a pod. Both were writers, adventurers, nature lovers, and ocean worshippers. They traveled the world together, going on surfing safaris, skiing adventures, and sailing voyages. They would tell stories to each other while anchored at night on their sailboat, “Leilani,” after a good day of fishing and surfing, with only the glistening stars above and the waves breaking below. They were a duo, simpatico, in harmony with nature, the sea, and each other. As Kyle memorialized him in The East Hampton Star, “There will never be another like him, ever. He did it right. He knew how to live. He gets an A+ for his time here on earth. What a stellar example for everyone.” Rusty has left his impression on all of us who knew him. He was a legend, a kind soul, a thinker, a nature lover, and a man whose passion about the ocean and the environment will have a long-lasting effect on Montauk and all those who visit it.
