DER OWEDSCHTERN
By Charles W.E. Siegel, A.B. Du schtiller, heilicher Owedhimmel, Mit deinem scheene Schterngewimmel, Mei dreemisch Herz begriesst dich.
THE EVENING STAR
You still, holy evening star, With your lovely sea of stars, My dreaming heart greets you. You awaken the tender feelings of love, So quite alone in the cool of the evening; Now Betsy is surely thinking of me.
Just look how it glistens honestly, That glorious golden eye in the sky, The friendly, sweet evening star! I proposed and she accepted, And that star approved immediately. (It always does for those in love.)
And complain of the sweet pains, You can depend on its faithfulness.
Earth’s ball separates us far; Yet you remain and shine on us both, O light of love, bright and clear, To me over the large hill field there; To her over roofs, dust and streets, You carry my wishful torch.
O heal the sweet hurt in my heart! I can hardly stand it any longer,Go, push on the wagon wheel of time; Then you may see us soon again, The large one with his small one, Walking side by side in town. ***
Last summer as we were getting some order into our basement study, we came upon a small volume entitled A Hundred Years Ago, And Other Poems. The poet was Charles W.E. Siegel, A.B., a student in the Reformed Theological Seminary in Lancaster, PA. The book was printed in 1875 in Lancaster by the Daily and Weekly Examiner. Most of the poems in this collection are in English, but there are two in High German and two in Pennsylvania German. This week we share DER OWEDSCHTERN with you, in a later column we will print DER ALT PEDER.
If we have to part for a spell, Then at dusk it shall know Our thoughts. We may tell it our secrets,
Charles W.E. Siegel knew High German well enough to write a High German poem. When one reads DER OWEDSCHTERN, the German influence is also evident. In fact, it is safe to assume that all our Dutch poets of this period were also able to read - if not to speak - High German, so when they write in our MUDDER-SCHPROOCH one must expect High German forms to appear.
DER OWEDSCHTERN we dedicate to all Dutch lovers, alt un yung!!!

Speaking of his salvation, the Apostle Paul said, “Howbeit for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might show forth all longsuffering, for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on Him to life everlasting” (I Timothy 1:16).
But if the word “longsuffering” means to suffer long with someone, how can Paul say that Christ showed forth “all longsuffering” to him? As Saul of Tarsus, he didn’t join the rebellion against God until Acts 7:58, less than a year before he was saved. God certainly hadn’t suffered with Paul for very long!
But in saving Saul, the Lord didn’t just show longsuffering to him alone, He showed it to all mankind. In the past, “the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah” (I Peter 3:20), but it only waited 120 years (Gen. 6:3). After God judged mankind with the flood, He started all over again with Noah, the father of all nations (Gen. 10:1-32). God endured those nations for 200 years, showing more longsuffering. But when they built a tower in rebellion against Him, He saved Abraham, and made his seed His favored nation, putting up with them for 1500 years. Even more longsuffering!
After God sent His only begotten Son to His favored nation and they crucified Him and stoned His prophet, you would think that God’s longsuffering would have been exhausted. You would think God would have given up on mankind and judged us with the worst judgment the world had ever seen, the Great Tribulation (Mt. 24:21). Instead, He saved Saul of Tarsus, the leader of
W ORSHIP J OINU S in
the world’s rebellion against God, to show forth all longsuffering. Paul’s salvation was the culmination of all the longsuffering God had shown in all human history. It was one small step of longsuffering for a man, one giant leap of longsuffering for mankind.
But God did not show forth this longsuffering merely as the culmination of all His longsuffering in the past. He also showed it forth “for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on Him to life everlasting” in the future, and the longsuffering the Lord showed Paul is the same longsuffering He has shown to mankind ever since.
“For we ourselves also were sometimes foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving divers lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another. But after that…” (Titus 3:3,4).
After that, what? After that you’d think the wrath of God would fall on us, just as you would have thought it would have fallen on the world when they stoned Stephen. Instead, we read, “after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared” (v. 4) — and it’s still appearing some 2,000 years later! Now that’s “all long-suffering!”
Have you believed on Him to life everlasting? The Lord Jesus died to pay for your sins and rose again (I Corinthians 15:3,4), and all He asks is that you believe He died to pay for your sins. Why not “believe on the Lord Jesus Christ” right now “and thou shalt be saved” (Acts 16:31).

Good Samaritan Services welcomed over 60 community members to its Ribbon Cutting and Open House at their newly renovated North Lime Street location in Lancaster City. The event marked a significant milestone for the organization, as this is its first housing facility in Lancaster City, dedicated to supporting single-mother families who are facing homelessness. With the addition of the North Lime Street property, Good Samaritan Services now offers housing at all five of its locations, pro-
viding more than 100 beds across Lancaster and Chester Counties. The Lancaster City location will house four families, offering not only safe, short-term housing, but also personalized case management and support services. Onsite staff will work with each family to provide the necessary resources and guidance to help them move from crisis to stability.
Conveniently located near public transportation, daycare, and employment opportunities, the home will offer an ideal environment for families to rebuild their lives. “This home will not only impact the lives of our program participants but also strengthen the community as a whole,” said Hannah Miller, Chief Pro-
gram & Impact Officer of Good Samaritan Services.
Following the ribboncutting ceremony, guests were invited to tour the newly renovated facility. The property has undergone extensive updates, including a renovated kitchen, cozy living and dining area, child-friendly bathroom, four bedrooms, new flooring, and enhanced safety features such as a sprinkler system and firewalls.

learn that it is under the control of the White Witch, Jadis, who symbolizes all that is evil in the world. Jadis has cast a spell that makes it always winter, but never Christmas. Edmund meets the White Witch who introduces herself as the Queen of Narnia. Edmond falls under her spell and is only released through the sacrifice of another.
The siblings find out that
they are part of a prophecy that foretells the defeat of the Witch by two Sons of Adam and two Daughters of Eve. With the help of Aslan, a great lion who symbolizes goodness, the children unite Narnia’s inhabitants to overthrow the Witch. Through bravery, sacrifice, and the bonds of family, they restore peace to Narnia, ushering in an era of joy and prosperity. The story explores themes of redemption, courage, and the battle between good and evil. It ends with the message that good people need good rulers and good rulers need good people.

LCBA Holds Monthly Meeting
The Loyal Christian Benefit Association, Local Branch 1557, met on Tuesday, September 17 at the Udder Choice Restaurant, Ephrata. Following a light supper, the meeting was opened by President Linda Mueller with the attendees praying the Lord’s Prayer. The speaker was Mr. David Lapp, CEO of Blessings of Hope (BOH). His excellent PowerPoint presentation showed how BOH finds resources for surplus food, then sorts and packs it for distribution for those who are experiencing food insecurity. Based in Lancaster County, their mission is to steward excess resources and, through a vast network of volunteers and ministry partners, get the muchneeded food into the hands of those who need it most. The organization has grown beyond all expectations.

regarding ideas to increase membership, especially targeting younger people.
It was reported that the Sunday, October 6 Bingo was sold out. On Sunday, December 15 the annual Christmas celebration will consist of lunch at Manor Buffet followed with the Servant Stage production of Christmas Crooners.

Isabella Le
Junior
Arts may be challenging and stressful for some people, but for Isabella Le, it is a source of relaxation and comfort.
This junior, “loves being creative” and enjoys exploring the world with her closest friends. Le is involved in Art National Honor Society at Ephrata High School, allowing herself to think vividly is something she enjoys. Along with this, being able to help people through the National Honor Society is something she is passionate about. She also enjoys spending time with her friends at NHS. Bella has big plans for the future, she plans to attend a university, majoring in something that is undecided still. Bella knows that whatever she does, she wants it to benefit people in some way.
“I love spending time with the people I love,” and in her spare time, Bella does just that. She enjoys spending time with her friends as well as her family. She has 2 brothers, Alex and Sonny, who always support her. Her parents, Thuy Le and Tuan Le, are who Bella looks up to, admiring how hardworking they are and how they always stay positive in difficult times. Bella values compassion and empathy. She believes people should have more of it. In her words, “You can dislike a person all you want, but it doesn’t undermine the things they go through.” Bella plans to continue spreading kindness and creativity in her future.

Leighton Smith 6th Grade
Leighton Smith, a 6th grader at LAMS, is a funny, kind, artistic, organized, and flexible person! One thing she loves about going to school at LAMS is that they usually have small class sizes, because it’s calm and students get to know each other well and are friends. Leighton’s favorite class is PE because she gets to be active and play with friends, which feels like an extra “flex” (or recess) period.
Leighton is a student athlete, playing middle school volleyball this fall, and planning to join LAMS basketball over the winter season. Her athletic abilities show up outside of school as well; she’s earned three gymnastics medals across the years, as well as a childhood medal in soccer when she was small.
Another fun thing about Leighton is that she can be a VERY loud singer when she wants to be; she even won a skating party’s “Loudest Singer” award to prove it! Leighton uses her musical talents with a small band of other musicians who enjoy music. In her spare time, she likes to listen to music, go hunting, ride her bike, hang out with neighborhood kids, and watch TV.
So far in life, Leighton’s biggest achievement has been making it to States for gymnastics, competing against all of PA!

When she grows up, one of Leighton’s goals is to become a mom; she really looks up to her parents and considers them both her role models. Leighton and her family attend LEFC, where she is involved in a Life Group and helps out with the little kids. One of her favorite scriptures is Psalm 23.
If she could change one thing about the world, Leighton would make sure that everyone could know about God’s love so they could have a personal relationship with Christ. She believes that would really be Good News!
