Many thoughts went through my head while I was working. How was it, I wondered, that our ancestors learned to eat dandelion and to cook it that it tastes so good? Then I looked at the apple trees and wondered, how did my

“One Of The Few Things In Life That’s Free…”

grandfather, Jonathan Swope, decide to plant all those kinds of apples? - old varieties like Rust, Banana, Grimes Golden, Baldwin, Jonathan, and the best of them all, Smokehouse. Then ever so often I had to stand up and stretch and looked at the clouds and remembered when I was a little boy I used to wonder what was in the clouds? - cotton? - My fingers were sticky and dirty from the sap in the roots, and stiff from the cold weather, but after a while I went home, proud with my dandelion. But sometimes Mom said I didn’t clean it very well! Oh well, it was worth my trouble to eat the good dandelion later on. - That orchard is now a cemetery, and my parents are buried there. But I will never in my life forget the pleasure I had in hunting dandelion on that ground.

Make God Smile

Author: Wenger

Scripture: Psalm 11:7“The Lord is righteous, He loves righteousness; His countenance beholds the upright.”

We know from our verse God loves righteousness. One of our verses last week stated that, “For I the Lord love righteousness; I hate robbery and wrongdoing.”

So, with that in mind, we began looking at Proverbs 6 where God catalogs seven thing He hates. We certainly are NOT going to make God smile if we practice what He hates.

Last week, we ended with a brief look at what God hates. Believing that it is the most favorable way to secure God’s blessing, rather than His displeasure. I said we

should stay as far away as possible from the attitudes and actions listed. We covered only the first in a list of seven things God despises: “A proud look,” the attitude of pride. There are a host of ramifications from an attitude of pride that we covered, but suffice it to say, it was Satan’s pride that caused his fall. So, it’s no wonder that Proverbs 16:18 says, “Pride goes before a fall.”

So, let’s move on to number 2 on God’s most hated list, which is a lying tongue. Everyone has lied at one time or another. Some people lie habitually. You have to wonder if anything they say is true. Truth is one of the building blocks of relationships. No relationship will flourish without truth. When we lie, it is always to get something. We lie to feel better about ourselves. Ananias and Sapphira wanted esteem. We lie to keep someone from knowing the truth, which, if they knew, we would feel guilt. We lie to get our will accomplished. Satan did this in the garden when he said to

Eve, “You will not surely die” (Genesis 3:4)! The devil, in this case, wanted Eve to partake of the fruit and disobey God and bring the very thing he said wouldn’t happen! In John 8:44, Christ said of the

Pharisees, “You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning and does not stand for the truth, because there is no truth in him. Whenever he

tells a lie, he speaks from his own nature, because he is a liar and the father of lies.” So when we lie, we are resubmitting ourselves to the father of lies. When we speak truth only, we are making God smile. Christ said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.” He was filled with both, grace and truth. If we are to offer any real worship, it must be in truth, not lies. “God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth” (John 4:24).

Looking at number three on God’s most hated list, it is: “Hands that shed innocent blood.” The first example in scripture that comes to mind is Genesis 4:8b, “Cain rose up against Abel his brother and killed him.” God accepted Abel’s offering, but didn’t approve of Cain’s offering. It really is rather mechanical and predictable. Cain left anger, jealousy and hatred to build in his heart. It was only a matter of time until he acted on it. Don’t let these attitudes take up residency in your heart…EVER! Even resentment and bitterness can rot

your soul and lead to hatred. Hebrews 12:15 states, “Looking carefully lest anyone fall short of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up cause trouble, and by this many become defiled.” Stephen was stoned to death simply because he believed in Christ and preached a message that the jealous, blinded, hypocritical, proud and arrogant religious leaders of the day hated. His blood was innocent. He did nothing worthy of death. Their hatred and defiled minds could only come to one conclusion… stone him!

Then there was Herod, who slew all of the children two years and under in an effort to stamp out any chance of another king rising to take his throne. It all starts in the heart! The heart of the problem is the problem of the heart. Proverbs 4:23, “Guard your heart with all diligence, for out of it are all the issues of life.”

Next week, we will pick up with God’s most hated list! Don’t let your attitudes or actions be on it!

ELANCO Library Welcomes Guests To Cool Down

As the temperatures soar, ELANCO Library welcomes guests to enjoy air conditioning during operating hours. All are invited to visit ELANCO Library, 11 Chestnut Drive, New Holland, and take advantage of the climate-controlled environment at any time the Library is open. Regular hours are Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.; and Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Visitors may stay and relax for as long as they would like during these times.

In addition to a comfortable, air-conditioned space, the Library offers books, newspapers and magazines to read, a water cooler, free wifi and public computers, public restrooms, a children’s play and learning area, and much more. Guests are also encouraged to sign up for the Library’s all-ages Summer Reading Program; to register for a library card (which provides access to ELANCO Library’s 42,000 items as well as reciprocal borrowing privileges at other public libraries in the County); and to participate in the numerous educational, enriching, and entertaining programs hosted at the Library, while visiting.

Residents of the Eastern Lancaster County area are asked to share this information with neighbors and other acquaintances who might need or want a respite from the heat.

A $50,000* Energy for Learning fundraising campaign to fund heating, air conditioning & HVAC repairs is underway. Replacing each of the library’s old HVAC units costs approximately $10,000. A climate-controlled Library protects collections, improves indoor air quality, and enhances the experience of all visitors. Donations help keep the Library open, welcoming, and accessible for the entire community. (*Funds in excess of $50,000 will be applied to general operating expenses.)

Gifts to support the Library’s campaign to ensure a comfortable and inviting space for years to come are gratefully accepted online or by mail, or at the Library.

* On July 7, 1456, Joan of Arc’s heresy conviction was overturned at an appeal proceeding held at the archbishop’s palace in Rouen, France. Unfortunately, the Catholic Church’s change of heart came too late, as she’d been burned at the stake 25 years earlier.

* On July 8, 1905, the body of Revolutionary War naval hero John Paul Jones, which had lain for more than a century in a French graveyard, began its final trans-Atlantic journey, ending in interment at the U.S. Naval Academy in Maryland with a ceremony

* On July 10, 2018, the last of 12 Thai youth soccer

* On July 11, 1944, German army officer Count Claus von Stauffenberg carried a bomb to Adolf Hitler’s headquarters in Bavaria with the intention of assassinating him. The count ended up holding back because Hermann Göring and Heinrich Himmler, who were also considered crucial targets, weren’t present as expected.

* On July 12, 1979, public backlash to disco music reached its zenith with the “Disco Demolition” night at Chicago’s Comiskey Park, which resulted in at least nine injuries, 39 arrests and the cancellation and forfeit of a Major League Baseball game.

* On July 13, 1990, the romantic thriller “Ghost,” about a woman who communicates with her murdered boyfriend via a psychic and starring Demi Moore, Patrick Swayze and Whoopi Goldberg, opened across the U.S. It received multiple Academy Award nominations, and Goldberg took home an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.
