READING

Reading is a pastime for many people. Whether they have time or not, they are seen with a book. We had few reading books in our school. Today, in spite of many books, there are many poor readers. We begin in a one-room school building. The alphabet was the first thing we learned. Capital and small letters, all 26. We put them together and made words.

Jesse Jones Squadron 304 meets each Monday (except holidays) at 7:00 p.m. in the Venture Jets hangar, which is located, on the airport near the intersection of Lititz Pike and Millport Road. Visitors are always welcome.

How proud I felt with my first reader, in those days called a primer. On the upper half of each page was a colored picture. Below we read little poems like “Jack and Jill.” By the next year, we received more books. Arithmetic and Language books were thicker. Studies of earlier people (history) and distant places (geography) called Social Studies today. We could not learn from them unless we could read. Today most cities have large libraries and stock thousands of helpful books. They can be loaned at little expense and help to educate you.

Today, there are also books for the blind to read. But the Greatest Book (the Bible) tells of love and is a warning against sin.

LESE was written on February 10, 1987. AND it happens to be the 100th Dutch poem from the pen of die Anna vun Bannwill!!! Anna calls LESE “a timely subject and a lifetime favorite pastime.” Anna continues: “As a young woman, aged 17-20, I had access to a library in the home of a woman whom I helped when she entertained at dinners. I’m deeply indebted to her for her kindness to one with an insatiable appetite for reading. I believe my background of lifetime reading has been helpful in expressing my feeling through my poetry.” Un mir glaawe sell aa!

Persecution, No Surprise

Author: Wenger

Scripture: 1st Peter 4:12“Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal among you, which comes upon you for your testing, as though some strange thing were happening to you.”

The fiery ordeal is suffering/persecution - Peter makes that clear in the chapter. As a Christian, suffering for Christ shouldn’t come as a surprise to us. Anytime you oppose the world’s system, you will encounter resistance, up to and including suffering for righteousness sake itself. The problem is that God has a standard. He has revealed truth that opposes lies, light that refutes darkness, and righteousness that flies in the face of man’s evil deeds. The Bible says men love darkness rather than light. John 3:20 states, ”For everyone who does evil hates the light, and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed.”

Persecution started in the beginning when Cain killed his brother. 1st John 3:12 gives us the commentary, “Not as Cain, who was of the evil one and murdered his brother. And for what reason did he murder him? Because his own deeds were evil, but his brother’s were righteous.” We also see that Israel’s own religious leaders often persecuted the prophets that God sent to rebuke them when they were living in sin and disobedience.

Luke 13:34 says, “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, but you would not.”

Christ himself was always under the hatred of the religious self-righteous leaders of his time. John 15:25 says, “they hated me without a cause.” The leaders were constantly looking for opportunity to take Christ and put him to death, but they feared the people. Jealousy and Christ’s burning words of condemnation for the Pharisees

brought about a hatred that always leads to murderous intent. People who lie, and believe lies, will do anything to stop the truth. When presented with the truth, they will always turn on the one who presents that truth.

The New Testament believers faced persecution. Stephen was the churches’ first martyr. We shouldn’t be surprised of the fiery ordeal, but we should expect persecution. What does the scripture say? Not many, not most, but “all that live Godly in Christ shall suffer persecution” (2nd Timothy 3:12). There is more persecution of Christianity today than at any other time in history.

What should be our response to persecution?

First of all, understand it’s just natural. Animosity is going to happen. We need to guard our attitude to be sure if people recoil, it’s about the message and not the messenger. Peter states, “Make sure none of you suffer as a murderer, or thief, or evildoer, or a troublesome meddler” (1st Peter 4:15). If we are obnoxious in our

demeanor, then people just plain dislike our personality; that’s not persecution. We should rejoice in persecution. Peter previously said, “But to the degree that you share the sufferings of Christ, keep on rejoicing, so that at the revelation of His glory you may also rejoice and be overjoyed. If you are insulted for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory, and of God, rests upon you” (1st Peter 4:13, 14). Our response should be that we know it will happen, we are to rejoice when it does, and we are to be motivated by the future at Christ’s return. We can never handle persecution unless we look to the eternal, to what’s ahead and not this temporal present world. Persecution has always been good for the church and Christ’s cause. It will surely separate the wheat from the tares. Matthew 5:12 says, “Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they perwsecuted the prophets who were before you.”

Children and Grandchildren

Dad, Thank You.

Thank you for the laughter, For the good times that we share, Thanks for always listening, For trying to be fair.

Love, Bonnie 9 9

Thank you for your comfort, When things are going bad, Thank you for the shoulder, To cry on when I’m sad. This poem is a reminder that All my life through, I’ll be thanking Heaven For a Special Dad like you. Author Unknown

Dad, I wish you were down here on earth, but your wings were ready to go. I know you’re at peace, because I see signs of you all around, and if I see a cardinal, I know it’s you watching over

us. Thank you dad for all you did. You made me stronger than I ever thought possible. You rest in peace dad, till we meet again.

Miss you Dad.

Celebrate Father’s Day With New Dads

Father’s Day is celebrated on the third Sunday in June in 52 countries around the world. Elsewhere it is celebrated on other days of the year.

The holiday is celebrated in many ways, most traditionally with gifts for Dad, time spent with the family, and rest and relaxation for fathers everywhere. What gifts are ideal for the first-time dad? Here are some ideas.

• A t-shirt with the baby’s picture on it so he can brag about his pride and joy.

• A diaper changing survival kit, complete with rubber gloves and nose clip.

• A new digital camera so that he can snap tons of

pictures of his son or daughter.

• A day out with the guys, golfing or doing whatever it is Dad likes to do. Every dad can use a break from a new infant.

• A night out with his spouse. Find a babysitter and enable Dad to have some time with the other special someone in his life. This is a gift both can enjoy.

• A framed photo of Dad with his baby that he can keep on his desk at work or beside the bed.

“Be kind to thy father, for when thou wert young, who loved thee so fondly as he? He caught the first accents that fell from thy tongue, and joined in thy innocent glee.”

Fathers Who Are Not Forgotten

to bring them a successful crop. Eventually, the famine came to an end, and in their gratitude, people promised to make an annual offering of their most prized possession, food, to St. Joseph.

Today in Sicily, the faithful erect St. Joseph tables and decorate them with lacy tablecloths, votive candles and lily blossom stalks. They then fill the tables with elaborate foods like breads, cakes, cookies, pasta and fish. A priest blesses the tables and a statue of St. Joseph presides over them. Bread and fava beans, which are said to bring good luck and saved the Sicilians from starvation, are served to anyone who visits the tables. It is believed that as long as St. Joseph’s bread is kept in the home, a family will never starve.

Different Father’s Day Celebrations

In the United States, Father’s Day is celebrated on the third Sunday in June. While many other countries

also celebrate it on that day, including Argentina, Canada, France and Japan, some do not. They celebrate their version of Father’s Day on other dates.

In Sicily, Father’s Day is celebrated on March 19 as St. Joseph’s Day. The Roman Catholic feast day is believed to be the birthday of St. Joseph, stepfather of Jesus and husband of Mary.

During the famine in Sicily, people prayed to St. Joseph

In Germany, Father’s Day or “Vatertag” is celebrated on Ascension Day, the Thursday 40 days after Easter. Vatertag started in the Middle Ages as a religious procession honoring “Gott, den Vater” on Ascension Day. It remained a family day to celebrate fathers until the 19th century when it reappeared in Berlin as an alcoholic celebration. In eastern Germany, the holiday is called “Herrentag” or Gentlemen’s Day, and while there still may be drinking on that day, the overboard drinking is a thing of the past. Traditional celebrations involved men on a hiking tour pulling one or more small wagons containing beer or wine and regional food like blood sausage, liverwurst, eggs and vegetables.

In Thailand, Father’s Day is celebrated on December 5, the birthday of King Bhumidol Adulyadej, who many considered to be the people’s father. King Bhumidol Adulyadej is the

Happy Father’s Day to the Best DAD!!

to celebrate and pray for the king’s happiness and continued good health.

December 5 is also the day when everyone expresses their gratitude to fathers throughout the country for the roles they play in family and society. In 1980, the president of the Volunteers and Educational Promotion Association, Khunying Neutip Samarasute, proclaimed December 5 National Father’s Day and the organizing committee chose canna as the symbol of the day.

These Father’s Day celebrations may be a little more elaborate than some. However, in some way, they all show fathers how much they are loved and respected.

Remember All The Men In Your Life

With so many families having stepfathers, it is easy to see how celebrating Father’s Day could get complicated. You don’t want to hurt someone’s feelings. While it isn’t a good idea to get identical gifts for your stepfather and your biological father, there is no reason you can’t get them the same type of gifts.

When deciding what to give your stepfather for Father’s Day, consider the role he has played in your life. Remember all the time and attention he has given you.

Consider putting together

a coupon book of things the two of you can do together. Include tickets to the movies, zoo, museum and various sporting events. Include tickets for a trip to a fast food restaurant, a father/ child movie night, a round of bowling or miniature golf, or a trip to a batting cage. The only limits to the coupon book are the likes and dislikes of your stepfather.

What does your stepfather like to do? Take that and turn it into a gift basket. There is no limit to the themes you can have from cars to fishing and hunting to food and entertainment.

Consider giving your stepfather the basics with a twist. Instead of a tie, give him a set of themed ties in his favorite color. Instead

of a pair of socks, give him a variety of socks in colors other than black, white and gray. If you opt to give him a new wallet, include some family photos and some type of unique bill.

For those of you who cannot visit your stepfather on Father’s Day, consider sending him a video or scrapbook of the things you did together. Father’s Day is also a good day to mend fences if you and your stepfather haven’t seen eye to eye lately. Giving him a gift or a card can show him how much you care about him and the relationship you have with him.

This year, remember all of the men in your life who have stepped up to the challenge of fatherhood.

Cornerstone Bible Church Vacation Bible School

Cornerstone Bible Church, at 529 Lauschtown Road in Bowmansville (just off Route 897), will be hosting a morning Vacation Bible School (VBS) on church property. This will take place each day from 9:00 a.m. until 11:45 a.m., Monday, June 9 through Friday, June 13. Boys and girls age four through those entering the seventh grade are invited for an exciting week. There will be a closing program Friday night at 7:00 p.m. to which the entire family is invited to see the excitement of what the children have discovered all week.

This year’s theme is: “Stories from the Savior.” They will be learning lessons from the Parables of Jesus. The daily themes of this year’s VBS are: “The Soil of the Heart (Part 1 and Part 2)”; “Mercy: Our Only Hope”; “Don’t Waste God’s Gifts”; and “The Invitation.”

A full caring staff has been assembled under the leadership of Jody Wenger and Tim Haas. Led by Pastor Jahn David Horgen and Harold Wenger, the children will have a vibrant Bible-

centered music program which normally has the children singing throughout the year. Each day will begin with a dynamic time of singing, a missions emphasis, and a dramatic skit. The drama will feature young people in full costume for the times. Children will then move on with their leaders to various stages where they will encounter crafts, recreation, snack time and the Bible lesson of the day.

The staff is composed of Bob Watts, Jim Ciraulo, Jody Wenger, Susanne Horgen, Megan Waldner, Hannah Davidson, Hannah Casolare, Sandy Weinhold, Cristal Guldin, Holly Haas, Nicole Butler, Anne Rose, Olga Karpitskiy, Sally Bryant, Cindy Smith, Jahn Mark Horgen, Susanna Horgen, Faith Horgen, Daniel Wenger, Tima Karpitskiy,

Dacia Weaver, Sara Guldin, Masha Karpitskiy, Liesl Wenger, Rebekah Horgen, Rachel Guldin, Delanna Weaver, Ella Sciarra, Abigail Rose, Kayla Watts, Danae Weaver, Matthew Karpitskiy, Andrew Horgen, Noah Sciarra, Kylie Rieff, Carolyn DeStefano, Melissa Sensenig and Ely Stauffer.

There is no cost for this opportunity, which is seen as an outreach of Cornerstone to the various local communities. Preregistration is encouraged. This years’ staff will again be ready to love your children with the love of Jesus.

For more information regarding the church, or in order to pre-register for this years VBS, call 717-4057293 or visit their website at www.cbchurchlancasterpa. com.
