THOUGHT WHILE HUNTING DANDELION

Spring is my favorite time of year. After the cold winter, it is always wondrous to see the soil come to life again. One of the first plants one sees is “Pissebett.” But do all of you know what “Pissebett” is? The English name for it is “dandelion.” – I have always enjoyed hunting dandelion. Some of you may ask, why? Where I live in Maryland, dandelion grows very poorly because our soil has a lot of clay. I often take the seed heads and scatter the seed on my flower beds. You may laugh, but this is really true! – Yes, we eat dandelion! There is nothing I like better than smoked ham or sausage with whole boiled potatoes and dandelion, made our Dutch way. You use a large pan and fry small pieces of smoked bacon, let it cool a bit and then beat an egg and add a little water, vinegar and sugar (to taste). Heat the pan again and add this mixture and stir with the bacon. Then add the dandelion to the pan and stir it a bit until it is wilted in the juice. I like

to put the sweetsour dandelion on the potatoes so that they will soak up the juice. I prefer this to steaks or turkey! It’s good with chicken pot pie, also. – No matter how young the dandelion, one has to chew it a while. It reminds one of a cow chewing her cud! It’s a little bitter, but I believe it is good for our health and for the teeth. – I was perhaps only 14 years old when I first hunted dandelion. With my bicycle, I went to the orchard behind the Brethren Church in Frystown, where a lot of dandelion grew. My knife was a bit dull, but I dug dandelion until my tin pail was full.

Tune in next week for the conclusion. May 18, 1988 En Bischli-Gnippli as Pissebett gleicht

Make God Smile

Author: Wenger

Scripture: Psalm 11:7

“The Lord is righteous, He loves righteousness; His countenance beholds the upright.”

Our verse starts with a declaration about the character of God: “The Lord is righteous.” All of God’s actions, thoughts, and ways are absolutely righteous. He acts consistent with His own moral standard, which is defined by His holy and perfect nature. It implies that God is perfectly just, fair, and true in all His actions and decisions. Nothing God does is unrighteous, unfair, unjust or arbitrary. Often people falsely accuse God of being unfair, to blame for all catastrophic occurrences and responsible for evil and sickness in that He allows it to happen. This simply isn’t true. The original sin brought a curse on the earth and all mankind. The curse, because of man’s choice, is the cause for all evil, sin,

death and sickness. Nothing is as it was in Eden. If God eliminated all suffering, sin and evil, nothing would exist; that means you and I as well. When God brings judgment, and He does, it is altogether righteous and justified. The Psalm states it this way, “Righteous are You, O LORD, and upright are Your judgments” (Psalm 119:137).

Our verse not only defines The Lord as righteous, but goes on to say, “He loves righteousness.” We all have choices to make every day. We can choose righteousness, justice, kindness, or we can choose unrighteousness, favoritism, evil, sin, our own way, which usually is not good. When Nehemiah returned to Jerusalem to rebuild the walls, he found that the noble Jews were charging their brothers interest on loans and even taking their property when they couldn’t pay, which was all forbidden. It is often called usury. Nehemiah 5:7 states, “After serious thought, I rebuked the nobles and rulers, and said to them, ‘Each of you is exacting usury from his brother.’ So I called a

great assembly against them.” He made them pay back the interest and return their lands. That was justice. It’s not by accident that the Pharisees did the same thing in Jesus’s time. They were even taking widows’ properties and not helping their aging parents. Isaiah 61:8 states, “For I the Lord love justice; I hate robbery and wrongdoing.” Whenever God declares what He hates, we want to be as far away from it as we can get. We want to align ourselves with what God says He loves. God gives us a catalog on what He hates. In Proverbs 6:16 it states, “Six things The Lord hates, yes, seven are an abomination to Him. A proud look, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that are swift in running to evil, a false witness who speaks lies, and one who sows discord among brethren.” Let’s look at these seven attitudes and actions God hates. Number one seems a little harmless, but in fact it can be the chief cause of a host of evils. “A proud look” Pride enables the thought pattern that you are

better, smarter, superior or stronger than others. This is how damaging pride can be. It brings a whole host of negative characteristics and they are: defensiveness, unwillingness to apologize or admit fault, difficulty compromising, ultimately creating conflict and resentment. It also escalates conflict, hinders communication, builds emotional walls instead of removing them, is arrogant, selfcentered and finally the most damming of all, “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble” (James 4:6). We are all proud at times. The last thing we want is to have God resisting us instead of blessing us. Pride can perhaps be one of the hardest attitudes to acknowledge and deal with. It is an everyday problem and causes enormous damage to our relationships. Our title is “Make God Smile” it’s hard to imagine God can smile when He looks upon us if we are practicing what He hates. Think about it. If your children are practicing what you hate to see, can you smile? We will pick up next week.

John

Fry Celebrates

100th Birthday With Family And Friends

John Fry of Denver recently celebrated his 100th birthday with family, friends and a visit by Representative David Zimmerman who presented a citation from the state to John. John was born on May 28, 1925 on the Fry farm in Brecknock Township. He is the son of the late Rev. Norman Fry and Lena Zimmermanm, and he was the fourth of 11

children. John was one of the first infants delivered by Dr. William Lobar of Reamstown, and he was given the middle name William in honor of that. He attended Fivepointville and Chestnut Hill Country Schools and later attended Cocalico Vocational High School.

John also recently shared some of these fascinating

facts about his life, “My father, Pop Fry, was also a popular stone mason and I was employed by my father. I remember when we rebuilt an old broken stone wall located around the Ephrata Cloister Cemetery. My first factory employment was for the Moyer Clothing Factory. Before I was drafted in World War II, I was also employed by the Lancaster Armstrong Cork Company. I was awarded the ‘Army-Navy Production Award’ for excellence in war production. Following World War II, I was employed by Lancaster RCA as an inspector for color TV. My final employment of 1975 to my retirement year of 1990 was for the F.W. Woolworth
