ISLANDS OF INSPIRATION
Dear Readers,
This November, Global Trend Monitor celebrates Malta National Day with a very special edition curated from my recent journey across the islands.
For eight unforgettable days, I immersed myself in Malta’s rich tapestry of history, heritage, art, and innovation, bringing back stories that reflect the spirit of this remarkable nation.
From the visionary world of Luke Azzopardi to the evocative scents crafted by Stephen Cordina, and from the contemporary brilliance of MICAS and DesignMT to Malta’s growing reputation as a wellness haven, every page in this issue offers a glimpse into how Malta bridges tradition with modern creativity.
I had the privilege of exploring not only its cultural landmarks and thriving art scene but also its luxury hotels, culinary excellence, and unforgettable experiences that continue to position the islands as a world-class destination.
My travels last month also took me to Bali and Komodo with AYANA, where I enjoyed world-class dining, restorative spa rituals, meaningful coral planting, and the unforgettable thrill of seeing Komodo dragons up close.
Alongside travel features, we bring you our signature mix of lifestyle, luxury, and mobility stories, from the artistry of Vacheron Constantin’s Métiers d’Art masterpiece and the bold elegance of Sunreef’s 65M Explorer to reviews of the latest SUVs and EVs shaping the future of driving.
As always, this edition is a reflection of exploration and discovery. I hope these pages inspire you to see Malta, and the world, with fresh eyes, and to celebrate the beauty of cultural exchange, innovation, and timeless creativity.
Enjoy the read.

THE VISIONARY WORLD OF LUKE AZZOPARDI
Inside the mind of one of Malta’s leading fashion artist sharing insights on Couture, Culture, Sustainability and Fashion as Art
Luke Azzopardi, Creative Director of Azzopardi Studio, is one of Malta’s most distinguished fashion visionaries. A couturier, creative director, author, and multidisciplinary artist whose work transcends the traditional boundaries of fashion. Rooted in his academic background in costume history and honed at Central Saint Martins, his approach fuses research, art history, and artisanal craftsmanship to produce collections that feel timeless yet boldly contemporary.
Through his self-sustainable studio, his brand, Azzopardi has redefined couture in Malta as an immersive cultural experience, where garments are not mere clothing but heirloom art objects. Named Fashion Designer of the Year in 2018 and International Achievement of the Year in 2023, he continues to weave narratives that celebrate heritage, challenge industry norms, and embrace sustainability. At his studio in Malta, we step inside the creative world of Luke Azzopardi to explore his inspirations, philosophy, and evolving journey.
ON TRANSLATING HISTORY INTO COUTURE
“For me, it is the clothing of the past that illuminates where we need to be heading,” Azzopardi mentions. “Clothing is a human need, and by looking at the past we find answers about what we will need in the future. That is why I am obsessed with revisiting folk costumes, particularly Maltese traditions, which are shaped by a unique mix of Southern European and North African influences.
By Shereen Shabnam
Malta has always been at a cultural threshold, positioned between two continents. Our history can be divided into two parts: the Arab and the European. The amalgamation of these creates an aesthetic that I don’t think has been articulated enough.
Certainly not as clearly as it has been in our language, which is the only Semitic Arabic language written in the Latin alphabet. You can find that same blend in my work, especially in my emphasis on fabric and materials, which I view as central to couture.”
FASHION AS AN ART OBJECT
As a brand, Azzopardi does not see fashion as seasonal output, but as a philosophical exercise. He explains, “Fashion is the artistic language the public is most familiar with. Not everyone might know a 16th-century chiaroscuro painting, but everyone knows what a corset looks like. That makes fashion a deeply accessible tool for philosophical exploration.
When I describe fashion as an art object, I treat each piece in that way. Many of our works are one-offs, created almost like sculptures on mannequins, and presented in contexts closer to art exhibitions than fashion weeks. Some clients even collect them as they would art pieces.
The intention is not to create unwearable clothes, but garments meant to be passed down as heirlooms — timeless, beautiful objects that transcend fleeting trends.”

ON SUSTAINABILITY AND SLOW FASHION
In an industry dominated by speed and consumption, Azzopardi as a dynamic brand remains firmly committed to slow fashion. “There’s a dichotomy here,” he admits. “The global fashion system thrives on speed by creating garments meant to expire within months. But I believe in the opposite: pieces so well made, from the finest fabrics, sometimes archival fabrics, that they live beyond trends.
It is a slower process, but a beautiful one. It allows creativity to flourish, without the
pressure of deadlines or celebrity-driven cycles. When the dust settles, it will become clear that this is the direction the fashion industry must take, whether you are a global brand or a small studio.”
PRESERVING CULTURAL HERITAGE
Luke’s 2022 book, Għonnella: Deconstructing the Garment, explored Malta’s enigmatic national costume. “Garments are finite. Unlike architecture, they don’t survive unless properly cared for. I felt the need to collect and expand the fragmented research that existed on the għonnella.
There were sporadic articles, but much was missing. Wearing two hats, as a costume historian and a designer, I tried to reimagine how the garment developed, filling in the black holes in its story. Most importantly, I wanted to bring it out of the archives.
If we leave garments behind glass, they risk becoming relics in a mausoleum. By reinterpreting them for tomorrow, we allow history to live again and be celebrated in new forms.”
THEATRE, OPERA, AND COUTURE
Luke has also designed extensively for opera and theatre, and sees little division between
those disciplines and couture. “Both are about storytelling,” he reflects. “Opera has the poetic power to transport people elsewhere, and couture does the same.
The conceptual fibre that runs through an opera costume or a couture piece is essentially the same as both celebrate human stories, where we came from, and where we are going.”
LOOKING AHEAD
Luke’s future projects are equally inspired by culture, history, and art. “Our next collection is inspired by the European film industry of the 1950s and 60s. Think Italian cinema, French New Wave, Blow-Up with Veruschka.
It was the first time actresses and models were celebrated as living works of art. That dark glamour, conceptually loaded with meaning, is what we’re exploring. We have sourced beautiful vintage fabrics for it, and we’re calling the collection Venus in Furs, after the infamous novel.
I also just returned from two successful international showings, in Osaka and New York, and now we are looking toward Europe again. The coming year is about expanding globally, but always with the same ethos by creating timeless, sustainable, and meaningful couture."

MALTA DAY IN THE UAE
CELEBRATING INDEPENDENCE, STRENGTHENING FRIENDSHIP AND BUILDING PARTNERSHIPS
Message from Maria Camilleri Calleja - Ambassador of Malta to the UAE, Permanent Representative of Malta to IRENA
Malta Day in the UAE is not simply a commemoration of Malta’s Independence; it is also a moment to reflect on the enduring friendship between Malta and the United Arab Emirates.
This is a relationship built on mutual respect, shared values, and a common vision for the future: a partnership that continues to grow in strength and scope.
Since the opening of Malta’s Embassy in Abu Dhabi in 2021, our small but energetic mission has welcomed no fewer than 71 visiting delegations. Remarkably, 36 of these visits were led at the highest levels: at presidential, prime minister, or ministerial level.
The amount of interaction demonstrates the unprecedented amplification of relations between our two countries. The pace of exchanges is proof that Malta and the UAE view one another as important partners with whom cooperation is both meaningful and mutually rewarding.
This year, we are particularly gratified to highlight a milestone in our relationship: the convening of the first session of the Malta-UAE Joint Commission, held in April 2025. This landmark meeting has opened 14 new avenues of cooperation, spanning judiciary reform, healthcare, e-government, cybersecurity, renewable energy, and the digital economy.
It marks a deepening of ties beyond traditional diplomacy and trade, showing how Malta and the UAE are collaborating on areas that shape the future of societies.
Numbers also tell a powerful story. Trade between Malta and the UAE has witnessed unprecedented growth. Imports from the UAE to Malta in 2024 rose by an impressive 122% compared to prepandemic 2019, while Maltese exports to the UAE increased by 115% over the same period.
For the past two years, 2023 and 2024, the UAE consecutively stood as Malta’s largest export partner in the Gulf region. These statistics are not just figures: they represent new opportunities, stronger
business links, and the growing trust between our nations.
On the wider European stage, Malta’s role as a member of the European Union
adds further value to this partnership. Malta is proud to support the ongoing negotiations for both a bilateral EU-UAE Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement and a EU-UAE Strategic Partnership Agreement. These initiatives promise to expand the political and economic dimensions of our relationship, ensuring that our cooperation resonates not just bilaterally but across regions.
Tourism also plays a central role in people-to-people connections. Here, the Malta Tourism Authority (MTA), represented in the UAE by AVIAREPS, has been instrumental in promoting Malta as a destination. The support of various airlines connecting our two countries has been invaluable, and a particularly notable step forward came last March, when the MTA and Emirates Airlines signed a Memorandum of Understanding. This agreement strengthens inbound tourism through collaborative marketing efforts: an achievement that deserves special recognition.
Equally crucial is the role of Cultural Diplomacy, which allows the Embassy to showcase Malta’s creativity and heritage. At 2025 Malta Day in the UAE, guests have the privilege to experience the outstanding photography of Lorenzo Agius and the musical talents of Kevin Paul Calleja, both of whom bring Malta’s vibrant artistic spirit to life.
Looking ahead, on 26 October, the Embassy of Malta, together with the Abu Dhabi Cultural Foundation, will present the exhibition and performance “Faces and Voices of Malta – a Mediterranean Odyssey.” This project, supported by Malta’s Ministry for Foreign Affairs and Arts Council Malta, further strengthens cultural ties while celebrating Maltese identity.
On the global stage, Malta remains a committed and principled actor in multilateral diplomacy. Our work within the United Nations Security Council in 2023-2024, alongside the UAE, as well as within the OSCE in 2024, and this year 2025, within the Council of Europe, reflects our unwavering focus on upholding sovereignty, promoting

accountability, combatting impunity and protecting the vulnerable, especially children in armed conflict. Malta’s Presidency of the Council of Europe during this current year underscores this commitment, most notably through the establishment of the Special Tribunal for the Crime of Aggression against Ukraine.
In September, Malta further affirmed its principled foreign policy by formally recognising the State of Palestine during the 80th Session of the UN General Assembly. This decision was deeply rooted in Malta’s own history and identity as a nation that has endured the horrors of conflict and emerged as a Champion for Peace.
Indeed, 2025 marks 460 years since the Great Siege of Malta and 80 years since
the end of World War II: two anniversaries that remind us of the brutality of war, and of Malta’s duty to advocate for peace, justice, and human dignity.
For Malta, Independence Day is not merely about celebrating sovereignty. It is also about celebrating the freedom to expand partnerships grounded in mutual respect and shared aspirations.
As we look to the future, Malta and the UAE are poised to continue growing together: bilaterally, inter-regionally, and globally. Together, we will contribute to peace, prosperity, tolerance, and understanding.
On this 2025 Malta Day, we celebrate not just the birth of a nation, but also the blossoming of a friendship destined to leave a lasting mark on both our peoples.

LUXURY & ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCETRANSFORMING TRADITION WITH TECHNOLOGY
HAKAN OZEL
Vice President Operations & General Manager, Shangri-La Dubai
The luxury industry has long been synonymous with self-expression, exclusivity and rarity, historical tributes, craftsmanship, iconic, detail, timeless appeal, and so on. Distinctive luxury brands have built their reputation on rich heritage and personal touch, creating experiences that go beyond simple commodity products. Today, we are in the “Experience & Intelligence Era” of business. In recent years, artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as a disruptive force, gradually reshaping the landscape of luxury with cuttingedge technology. From personalized shopping to supply chain optimization, AI is transforming how luxury brands interact with their customers and operate internally, while challenging the definition of luxury itself. Alignment is inevitable.
PERSONALIZATION AND CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE
In luxury enterprises, customer experience is paramount. AI enables these enterprises to deliver hyper-personalized experiences by analyzing huge amounts
of data from customer interactions, purchase history, demographics, social media trends, and alike. Machine learning algorithms are identifying individual preferences and predict future behaviors, allowing brands to tailor recommendations and communications. For instance, AI-powered programs on luxury e-commerce platforms provide instant and knowledgeable responses, simulating personal shopping assistance, and even managing complex requests such as customizations or rare item sourcing.
Luxury fashion houses are utilizing AI to offer virtual try-ons, leveraging augmented reality (AR) and computer vision. Customers are able to visualize how a product looks on them without ever entering a store, greatly enhancing convenience. Some high-end jewelry and luxury watch brands are using AI to recommend designs and models based on a client’s taste, occasion, and previous purchases, making the buying process both efficient and deeply personalized.
OPERATIONAL EFFICIENCY AND SUPPLY CHAIN INNOVATION
Traditionally, the luxury industry has relied on artisanal craftsmanship and small-scale production. However, AI is helping brands streamline operations without compromising on quality. Predictive analytics can forecast demand more accurately, reducing overproduction and minimizing waste, and managing inventories - a critical concern given the exclusivity and high costs of luxury goods and services and price positioning.
AI-driven systems monitor supply chains, stacks, inventories in real time, providing insights into inventory levels, shipment delays, and vendor reliability. For example, luxury watchmakers employ AI to track components sourced from multiple countries, ensuring authenticity and traceability. In the realm of haute couture, AI algorithms can schedule production based on customer orders and seasonal trends, optimizing resource allocation and improving sustainability.
Luxury hotels are using AI-powered programs to manage their room inventories real-time.
DESIGN AND CREATIVITY
One of the most fascinating applications of AI in luxury is in design. AI tools are analyzing historic collections, identifying patterns, and suggesting innovative combinations that align with brand aesthetics. Designers are using AIgenerated mood boards and sketches as inspiration for new collections, blending tradition with modernity. Generative AI also assists with fabric selection, color palettes, and even pattern creation, helping designers push creative boundaries. In jewelry design, AI can propose unique gemstone combinations or structural arrangements, leading to truly one-of-a-kind pieces.
MARKETING AND AUDIENCE ENGAGEMENT
The luxury industry is redefining its approach to marketing through AIpowered analytics. Brands can segment audiences with unique precision, targeting high-net-worth individuals or emerging luxury consumers in new markets. AI is helping to analyze social media sentiment, track influencers’ effectiveness, and predict the virality of campaigns.
Virtual influencers - computer-generated personas - are increasingly used to represent luxury brands, engaging younger, tech-savvy consumers while maintaining an aura of exclusivity. AI also enables dynamic pricing strategies, allowing brands to adjust prices in real time based on demand, seasonality, and exclusivity, referring to supply management as explained above.
AUTHENTICATION AND FAKE PREVENTION
Fake is a persistent challenge in the luxury sector, costing some of the brands billions of dollars annually. AI and machine learning are powerful tools in the fight against fake goods. Sophisticated image recognition algorithms can authenticate products by analyzing micro-details such as stitching patterns, logos, and material textures, and so on. Blockchain technology, often integrated with AI, id creating secure and transparent records of origin, making it nearly impossible to replicate genuine histories.
Customers benefit from peace of mind, knowing that the luxury items they purchase are genuine and ethically sourced. Brands, in turn, protect their reputations and maintain the integrity that defines luxury.
CHALLENGES AND ETHICAL CONSIDERATIONS
Despite its advantages, the adoption of AI in luxury is not without challenges. We shared many times that luxury has its distinctive DNA and it should not be disturbed. AI is inevitable but should not replace the core values of the product and brand. The sector must balance technological innovation with the human touch that defines luxury experiences. Overreliance on automation and technology, which includes AI could risk separating clients who value personal relationships and bespoke service. Data privacy is another critical concern; luxury consumers expect discretion, and brands must ensure that AI systems comply with strict privacy policies and requirements.
Luxury brands must develop training and development programs for their employees at every level, from lower ranks till senior executives, in a way that they will realize the importance of AI, learn and implement it rather than just following the
traditional way of conducting business. Some luxury sectors and enterprises may have challenges to create and innovate AI but nothing should stop the senior management from being curious about AI, bringing the outside world to inside, and further developing and/or using it so that they would offer similar quality level of products and services that the customers got used to and are already experiencing outside, as such expecting the same in return inside.
FUTURE OF AI IN LUXURY
Artificial intelligence is inevitably changing the luxury industry, driving personalization, efficiency, and innovation. Brands that successfully integrate AI with traditional values will thrive, offering clients experiences that are both technologically advanced and emotionally resonant. As AI continues to evolve, the luxury sector stands at the threshold of a new era - one where digital sophistication enhances, rather than replaces, the art of luxury.
VALLETTA’S HISTORIC WALLS HOST TOMORROW’S CREATIVITY BY DESIGNMT
Walking through the gates of Auberge d’Aragon as the sun dipped over the limestone ramparts, I felt a peculiar sense of déjà vu, as though Valletta itself were waking into a new skin, one woven by designers, makers, and visionaries. I was there with Elton Micallef, CEO of the Malta Crafts Foundation and organiser of designMT, who kindly guided me through the preparations unfolding across multiple iconic Valletta venues. What struck me most was how the city’s weight of history would become the canvas for something decidedly modern.
This year’s iteration of designMT returns bigger and bolder. Exhibitions spread across Auberge d’Aragon, Fortress Builders, the Chapel of Our Lady of Pilar, and the Valletta Design Cluster, each venue chosen for its connection to Valletta’s identity and architecture. As Elton showed me around, I could already
By Shereen Shabnam
sense how each space would converse with the design objects to come, often in harmony with the deco.
A DIALOGUE BETWEEN PAST & PRESENT
What sets designMT apart is its insistence that design is not ornamental but narrative. Exhibit pieces are chosen not for novelty alone, but for their ability to marry functionality, style and cultural meaning. In walking through the corridors of the venue, I imagined how designers will respond to the echoes of stone, shadow, and sacred silence. Those architectural bones will frame, highlight, and sometimes challenge the contemporary pieces showcased inside.
Elton pointed out a few names among the over 40 exhibitors this year - names that already feel familiar in Malta’s design
scene. Among them: Charles Zammit, a sculptor who specializes in the use of Maltese limestone, Alda Bugeja, a Gozobased textile artist; Marisa Zarb, who channels engineering into jewellery under the name Peprin®; Charles & Ron - the duo has been shaping Malta's fashion scene for over 30 years; Nico Conti – a ceramist who specializes in 3-D printing, and Glen Calleja, whose bookbinding and poetic crafts straddle art and object.
My favourite fragrance curator, Stephen Cordina is part of the designMT 2025 and I am positive he will draw people of all ages and backgrounds to his setup.
Walking past mockups in various rooms, you could tell each exhibitor has taken the venue’s character into account, whether that means soft materials in the Chapel’s quiet halls or bold sculptural forms against the fortress walls.
THEMES THAT MATTER
designMT’s ambition extends beyond passive display. The organisers have curated a series of thematic events that allow discourse to emerge around design’s role in contemporary life.
Each thematic event is tethered to exhibition venues or partner spaces, culminating in conversations that aim to engage both insiders and curious publics. It’s one thing to see a striking object; it’s another to hear the voices behind it, to understand the intentions, the challenges, the local stories.
Elton led me through narrow corridors, vaulted halls, terraces where scaffolding and lighting rigs were just being set. Watching artisans busy with installations and with feather-light gestures, I felt the power of contrast. The sacred geometry of the Chapel of Our Lady of Pilar set up a tension with provocative contemporary forms. In the Auberge d’Aragon, limestone sculptures seemed to reclaim fortitude and transformation.
Walking among the teams, I sensed an optimism that tradition is not dead weight but fertile soil. designMT 2025 feels less like an exhibition and more like a living experiment: how a small but rich country remaps its identity through form, craft, and dialogue.
As the doors open to the public, I expect Valletta itself to feel transformed with rooms of stone becoming stages for creative voices, streets where tourists once walked become corridors between exhibitions, and design conversations murmuring through cafés, galleries, and bastions.
STEPHEN CORDINA
MALTA’S SCENT ALCHEMIST, CRAFTING FRAGRANCE AS ART
Behind a modest violet door in Valletta lies Stephen Cordina’s atelier, a space where aroma becomes storytelling, and scent is sculpted by memory, place, and identity. As CEO and Creative Director of Stephen Cordina Aroma & Therapy, and a perfumer member of the Société
By Shereen Shabnam
Française des Parfumeurs, Stephen has quietly positioned Malta on the luxury fragrance map.
After a visit to his Atelier in Valletta recently, I realised that my love for candles in fact started during Christmas
By Shereen Shabnam
years ago, when a hotel in Malta I stayed in used his cinnamon candles in the lobby - I immediately fell in love with the scent and recognised it the minute I smelt it at Stephen’s Atelier. After a tour of the store, I discovered that Stephen’s work is rooted in nature, heritage, and deep emotional
resonance. It has a Maltese signature in every bottle and every box.
FROM GOZO FIELDS TO FRAGRANCE VISION
Born and raised in Gozo, Stephen’s earliest memories are scented: walking among fruit blossoms, inhaling herb scents at dawn, plucking petals from wild flowers. Dyslexia challenged his schooling, but it sharpened his sensory perception.
He mentions that he recognized chemical families by smell before he read their names. Over time, that intuitive nose found direction through formal training abroad and an affinity for botanical purity over synthetic shortcuts.
Returning to Malta from abroad, Stephen built his brand on natural perfumes, home fragrances, and wellness products, carved from local botanicals and inspired by Malta’s landscapes, history, and architectural heritage. His atelier in Valletta occupies a 16th-century monastic building, once a site for distilling herbal waters, which he chose deliberately to bridge Malta’s past and his olfactory future.
SCENT, STORY & SENSE
Stephen refuses to see perfume merely as a product. To him, every scent is a micro-biography, a fusion of place, memory, and emotion. His “local” lines bear names like Valletta, San Anton, Gozo, and Medina, drawing on indigenous flowers, citrus groves, and even ancient scent practices. One bespoke fragrance he created as tribute to his late mother features aniseed, a reminder of sweet coffee rituals in Gozitan homes.
He describes the creation process as “simmering, testing, listening”, what starts as historic research becomes blends tested over months (sometimes years), refined by feedback from friends and instinct. A fragrance is “ready” only when it transports him back to place and time, and passes the litmus test of burn, balance, and resonance.
A MALTESE SIGNATURE ON THE GLOBAL STAGE
Under Stephen’s leadership, the brand exports 11–20 % of its output beyond Malta — across Europe, North America, and the Middle East. Though still a micro-enterprise, its presence in hotel spas, yachts, and bespoke projects has drawn attention. His membership in the Société Française des Parfumeurs (a rare credential for a Maltese perfumer) underscores his ambition to bridge local craft with international perfume culture.
What makes the brand unique is that Stephen uses Aromatherapy and Alchemy techniques, formulated in a Kyphi Egyptian style of perfumery and merges it again with the traditional pyramid olfactive structure. Stephen enjoys working with newly discovered plant extracts which gives more options to reconstruct a reconstitution of a scent that previously he had to use molecular only.
Of all other perfumers, Stephen admires Mandy Aftel, Jean Claude Elena, Alberto Morillias and most of all his first tutor master, perfumer George H Dodd who was also a Biochemist and has sadly passed away.
Stephen sees the future in experiential fragrance: immersive scent rooms, perfumed architecture, interactive olfactory journeys. He imagines scents diffusing in museum wings, public gardens, and historical buildings echoing Malta’s stone, sea, jasmine, and salt.
THE VALLETTA SCENT HAS BEEN HARDEST TO CAPTURE IN A PERFUME SINCE WE HAVE BEEN COLONISED BY VARIOUS COUNTRIES OVER THE CENTURIES – EACH WITH DIFFERENT CULTURES AND INFLUENCES. BUT IT HAS BEEN A GREAT SUCCESS.
- Stephen Cordina
ZULFIQAR SWORD
A ONCE-IN-A-LIFETIME CUSTODIANSHIP OPPORTUNITY
An invitation to connoisseurs, patrons, and museums to steward one of the most consequential artifacts in the Islamic world
There are artifacts that transcend the very idea of collecting. They are not possessions to be acquired, but legacies to be safeguarded. Among them stands one of the most extraordinary treasures ever to surface in private custody: the sword known as Zulfiqar, the fabled blade attributed to the earliest century of Islam and inseparably tied to the memory of Ali ibn Abi Talib, cousin and son-in-law of the Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him).
Today, Zulfiqar rests in secure custody under Swiss law, held by a private custodian who has chosen to make it discreetly available to a select circle of individuals and institutions capable of honoring its profound significance. This is not a public offering, nor is it a matter of mere transaction. It is a carefully managed introduction to ensure that this incomparable artifact finds a new home worthy of its priceless heritage.
By Shereen Shabnam
The sword has been the subject of years of dedicated examination by experts from around the world. Scholars and specialists have studied its steel, inscriptions, and epigraphic program in extraordinary detail.
What has emerged is an object of immense historical resonance and exquisite craftsmanship, described as a true battle blade, forged of wootz steel, with a character that belongs
unmistakably to the earliest Islamic centuries. Its inscriptions are of particular note, naming only Allah, the Prophet, Fatima, Ali, Hasan, and Husayn.
The name Zulfiqar itself appears repeatedly on the blade, far more than on any other sword traditionally associated with this legacy.
The significance of this detail cannot be overstated. To those familiar with the traditions of Islam, Zulfiqar is not just a weapon but a symbol of courage, faith, and justice.
The repeated invocation of its name lends this sword a spiritual presence that transcends its material form. Inscriptions of this kind are exceedingly rare and carry with them a voice from history that speaks directly to the devout and the scholarly alike.
This is not only a work of sacred devotion but also an artwork of supreme cultural importance. The sword has already had a measure of public visibility, having featured in a museum exhibition in Europe with a multilingual catalogue.
More recently, its existence has been quietly acknowledged again in international circles. Each time it has surfaced, it has drawn fascination for the way it bridges artistry, metallurgy, history, and spirituality.
For a collector or institution, such visibility paired with rigorous private documentation offers reassurance of provenance and authenticity that is almost impossible to match.
But beyond the science and the scholarship lies its aura. Zulfiqar embodies stories of devotion and valor that remain central to Islamic history and identity.
To encounter it is to feel both the weight of craftsmanship and the echo of centuries of reverence. For a museum, it would anchor a gallery. For a private custodian, it would represent the pinnacle of a collection and as an object that demands deep respect.
The process for those who wish to explore this opportunity is intentionally rigorous. It begins with an expression of interest,
followed by confidentiality agreements, financial qualification, and ultimately the privilege of private viewing under secure conditions.
The current custodian is clear: the sword will not be sold to the highest bidder alone, but to the one who values its worth not in monetary terms, but in historical, cultural, and spiritual significance.
For connoisseurs of history and culture, this is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to assume guardianship of a piece that is beyond price. Zulfiqar is not an artifact that one owns; it is an inheritance that one carries forward. To hold it in trust is to step into a continuum of history, faith, and artistry that has shaped civilizations.
For the discerning few who understand this, the opportunity is now. Zulfiqar awaits its next custodian, not as a trophy, but as a legacy.
The editorial office is in direct contact with the Owner and, if you are interested in becoming the new Owner, will provide an opportunity for dialogue.
MICAS UNVEILED – GATEWAY TO GLOBAL CONTEMPORARY ART
Malta’s Contemporary Beacon of Art & Culture and a Platfrom for Creativity
The Malta International Contemporary Art Space (MICAS) is an immersive chapter in the island’s cultural story. Housed within the restored 17th-century Ospizio complex in Floriana, MICAS blends historic bastions with a bold curatorial vision, creating a space where heritage and global creativity converge.
With over 1,400 m² of gallery space, natural light streaming through modern interventions, and the promise of outdoor sculpture gardens, MICAS is not just a museum but a dialogue between Malta and the international art world.
THE SPACE WE INHABIT –MALTESE ART ON A GLOBAL PLATFORM
At the heart of my visit was MICAS’s third major exhibition, The Space We Inhabit, which opened in June 2025. Featuring six renowned
By Shereen Shabnam
Maltese artists -Caesar Attard, Vince Briffa, Joyce Camilleri, Austin Camilleri, Anton Grech, and Pierre Portelli.
The show occupied all three gallery floors with paintings, sculptures, video, and sound-based works. Each artist responded to the theme of space, exploring its real and imagined dimensions, and by extension, ideas of place and belonging.
Executive Chairperson Phyllis Muscat describes the exhibition as more than a celebration of Maltese talent, but a testament to how MICAS elevates local artists to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with their international peers.
Artistic Director Edith Devaney highlighted the exhibition’s intellectual rigour and bold execution, noting how each artist offered a distinct point of view while contributing to
a larger narrative of Maltese contemporary identity.
For me, the exhibition was both visually striking and deeply reflective, offering a chance to see Malta’s creative pulse expressed through diverse mediums that carried global resonance. It was a reminder that MICAS is not only a stage for the world’s artists but also a powerful voice for Malta’s own.
RETAIL THERAPY
On my recent visit, I found myself wandering through the soaring galleries before being drawn into one of my favourite aspects of MICAS, the gift shop. Unlike typical museum stores, this boutique reflects the very heartbeat of Malta’s creative community. Each corner revealed treasures by Maltese designers and artisans: locally crafted perfumes and handpoured candles, scarves that carried whispers of the sea breeze, leather-bound journals that
felt like keepsakes of the island’s history, and striking jewellery that merged traditional motifs with contemporary flair.
From ceramics and hand-painted mugs to artisanal condiments made with native ingredients, every item carried a story of Maltese culture reimagined for modern life. Browsing here felt less like shopping and more like curating my own slice of Malta’s artistry to take home.
EXPERIENTIAL DESTINATION
What makes MICAS unique is its dual role as both cultural hub and tourist destination. The museum’s architecture itself is striking, offering panoramic views of Valletta’s fortifications while seamlessly integrating contemporary design into the island’s historic fabric. Its programming extends beyond exhibitions, including talks, performances, and educational initiatives that connect visitors with Malta’s creative heartbeat.
For discerning travellers, MICAS is more than a stop on the itinerary. It is a space to pause, reflect, and immerse in Malta’s evolving cultural identity.
Whether you come for its cutting-edge exhibitions, its world-class roster of international collaborations, or its beautifully curated gift shop, MICAS offers an experience that lingers long after you’ve stepped outside its walls.

HOW DATA INFRASTRUCTURE IS POWERING SAUDI ARABIA’S AI-LED TRANSFORMATION
By Suhail Hasanain, Senior Director & General Manager, Middle East & Africa at NetApp
In today’s AI-driven world, innovation doesn’t stand alone—it demands a solid foundation. The real catalyst for transformation isn’t just advanced models or machine learning algorithms. It’s the infrastructure behind them.
As artificial intelligence reshapes economies and industries, its success hinges on how data is stored, moved, and made actionable. Countries leading in AI aren’t just investing in software—they’re rethinking infrastructure at scale.
Nowhere is this more evident than in Saudi Arabia.
VISION 2030 INFRASTRUCTURE AS A STRATEGIC IMPERATIVE
The Kingdom’s Vision 2030 sets the tone for bold digital transformation, positioning data and AI as cornerstones of economic diversification and national competitiveness. AI is not an experiment—it’s embedded in the Kingdom’s development blueprint.
Across sectors—from healthcare to energy to city planning—AI is already driving outcomes. Real-time traffic optimization, predictive maintenance in utilities, and AIassisted diagnostics are just the beginning. But what enables these breakthroughs isn’t AI alone—it’s the intelligent data infrastructure powering it behind the scenes.
At the heart of this transformation is a deliberate focus on sovereign, scalable, and secure data platforms. Organizations across the Kingdom are looking for more than speed or capacity—they require agility, compliance, and resilience.
BUILDING FOR SCALE
THE ROLE OF INFRASTRUCTURE IN NATIONAL AMBITION
The phrase “data is the new oil” resonates deeply in Saudi Arabia. But like oil, data must be refined to unlock value. Without the right architecture, data becomes a liability—not an asset.
That’s why entities like the Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA) and initiatives such as the National Strategy for
Data and AI are emphasizing the foundational role of infrastructure. These programs ensure that as data volumes surge, control, security, and performance scale alongside.
This is where NetApp plays a strategic role. Through our work in the Kingdom, we’re enabling public and private organizations to build modern, high-performance environments designed for AI—from hybrid and sovereign cloud deployments to AI-ready data fabrics. Our mission is simple: empower the Kingdom to move from data to insights to outcomes.
SAUDI-BORN INNOVATION THE RISE OF HUMAIN
A key testament to Saudi Arabia’s AI ambitions is the emergence of homegrown innovators like Humain. This Riyadh-based company is redefining what’s possible with generative AI in Arabic and regional contexts. With backing from leading institutional investors, Humain is building language models and applications that serve real-world needs across government, healthcare, and education.
Companies like Humain exemplify the Kingdom’s shift from technology consumer to technology creator. But their success is also dependent on data infrastructure that supports large-scale model training, secure deployment, and real-time inferencing—
areas where partnerships with global leaders like NetApp will be critical.
PARTNERING FOR IMPACT LESSONS BEYOND THE REGION
Saudi Arabia’s approach is becoming a blueprint:
• Invest in trusted, AI-ready infrastructure
• Enable collaboration between local champions and global technology leaders
• Govern data responsibly
• Focus on outcomes—not just platforms
This model offers powerful lessons. Infrastructure isn’t just an enabler—it’s a differentiator. The Kingdom’s commitment to responsible, scalable innovation will set it apart as AI matures globally.
THE ROAD AHEAD
Saudi Arabia’s AI journey is still unfolding, but its direction is clear. The Kingdom is laying the groundwork not just to adopt AI—but to lead it. As more partnerships form and platforms evolve, we expect to see even greater momentum.
True transformation, after all, isn’t about adopting technology—it’s about being strategically prepared to scale it. And Saudi Arabia is showing the world what that looks like.
MALTA
A GRAND STAGE OF HISTORY, FLAVOUR & CELEBRATION
A tapestry of grand races, heritage sites, and culinary treasures, Malta blends its storied past with vibrant modern life
As the Mediterranean breeze softens and autumn light bathes the limestone walls of Valletta and Mdina, Malta becomes a storyteller’s paradise. Once again this year, I traced layers of history, culture and flavour through museums, bastions and secret alleys over a few days and I found that this compact island rewards the curious traveller at every turn even after numerous visits.
Arriving in Malta from the UAE is surprisingly easy. Turkish Airlines maintains two daily flights to Istanbul, and with a smooth onward connection, you touch down in Malta daily in under a day. As the plane descended, I was struck by how the sea wraps the archipelago in blue, yet within those shores lies such a density of experience.
During my stay, I visited MICAS (Malta’s national collection of fine arts and decorative arts). The museum’s modern galleries and contextual displays rooted in Maltese heritage provide a striking introduction to the island’s visual identity. From there, I moved to Fort
By Shereen Shabnam
Saint Elmo, where defensive bastions now guard not just history but panoramic views of Grand Harbour and the outlying forts. The architecture, the salt-air wind, and the quiet echo of cannons long silenced give the place a timeless resonance.
One evening I found myself in Mdina, the Silent City, where Casa Gourgion revealed the domestic stories of aristocratic Malta and surprising artefacts behind its quiet façade. The city’s narrow streets, ancient walls, and vantage points over the island’s interior made it a meditative escape from Valletta’s bustle. Before that, I strolled through the Upper and Lower Barrakka Gardens, watching ships glide in and the sun set behind fortified wallsmoments of calm elevation amid the capital’s pulse.
To nourish the body and the senses, I traced my own culinary map. In Valletta, La Pira Restaurant captivated me with its elegant evening menus and thoughtful pairings. Nenu The Artisan Baker, steps away, offered
local bread, ftira baked in a 250 year old oven with bold Maltese flavors in a casual setting. I lingered over brunch at Café Jubilee, charmed by its vintage interior and surprising creative dishes.
In Sliema, Hammett’s Monastik introduced me to fine dining, regional fusion and refined interiors. Ruby Ray’s in Mercury Tower brought elevated casual dining with a bit of spice. In Rabat, Marie Patisserie was a perfect interlude with petite sweets, polished coffees offering a moment of indulgence. And in Birkirkara, Smugglers Restaurant gave me generous local fare in a warm neighbourhood setting.
When it came to places to rest, the options felt as varied as the island itself. In Valletta, I found the Embassy Hotel comfortable and centrally placed, and fater a tour, I found the elegant Phoenicia for grander stays. The Verdala Wellness Hotel offers a retreat further out, with space and calm. Iniala Harbour House brought me 3 nights of heavenly
experiences with design, views and proximity to the harbour in the heart of Valletta.
In St Julian’s and Sliema areas, Barceló Fortina Hotel and the stylish boutique Me by Meliá gave me access to waterfront energy. Off the beaten path, Mulberries Guesthouse delivered an intimate local feel I will remember for a long while.
One of Malta’s charms is how easily one can day-trip to Gozo. I have visited the island in the past multiple times, letting ferries take me into slower rhythms, coastal walks, and inland valleys.
Between museum visits, bastion walks, cooking classes, and sea swims, Gozo remains a beloved extra chapter.
Looking ahead, there is much to plan around for a Malta visit. From 18 October 2025, the Rolex Middle Sea Race will return with a 606-nautical-mile offshore challenge that begins and ends in Malta’s Grand Harbour, threading a circuit around Sicily. Also, Malta Classic /Mdina Grand Prix is slated for 23–26 October 2025, with vintage car hill climbs, style shows and races flowing through and around Mdina’s bastions.
While staying in St. Julian’s, a visit to the Odyssey and the Museum of Illusions proved to be an unforgettable highlight. Both are interactive attractions that amazes and entertains all ages, blending fun with mindbending creativity.
Malta is a place where centuries-old fortresses meet contemporary art, where regattas and music festivals light up the social calendar, and where every meal is a celebration of culture and craft.
Whether wandering through Valletta’s baroque streets, sailing across to Gozo, or indulging in a Michelin-inspired dining experience, visitors are sure to find that Malta leaves an imprint that lingers long after departure.
ENCOUNTERING KOMODO’S LEGENDARY DRAGONS
A JOURNEY INTO THE WILD WITH AYANA KOMODO WAECICU BEACH
A one-hour flight from Bali delivers you into a different world. It is a land where dragons roam, beaches blush pink, and the ocean holds stories of ancient beauty. Komodo National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of the planet’s last true frontiers, and my recent stay at AYANA Komodo Waecicu Beach offered the perfect balance of wilderness adventure and refined fivestar indulgence.
AYANA Komodo Waecicu Beach, the first five-star resort at the edge of the park, became my base for discovery. The property’s 205 ocean-facing rooms

frame sweeping views of the Flores Sea, while its elegant restaurants offered some of the best meals of my journey. Sunset cocktails and fresh seafood dinners under the stars at Kisik set the rhythm of my evenings, preparing me for days filled with exploration.
The heart of my adventure unfolded on an island-hopping tour, where we trekked across the rugged terrain of Komodo Island itself. There, I came face-to-face with three majestic Komodo dragons and even spotted a baby dragon darting playfully through the undergrowth — a rare and thrilling sight. These encounters
felt like stepping back in time, to a prehistoric era when these giants ruled unchallenged.
The day also included a stop at the worldfamous Pink Beach, where soft coral fragments tint the sand a delicate rose hue. We sailed and enjoyed crystalline waters, surrounded by vibrant marine life, before enjoying a freshly prepared lunch onboard, making the experience both exhilarating and restorative.
As a Fijian and an islander passionate about the sea, one of the most meaningful moments of my stay came
during a coral planting session at the resort’s jetty. Guided by a marine biologist, I learned about reef health and biodiversity while placing fragments that will grow into living habitats for future generations of sea life. It was a hands-on reminder that luxury can coexist with conservation, leaving a legacy of care as well as enjoyment.
As the sun dipped below the horizon, I boarded AYANA Lako Sae for a sunset dinner cruise. The evening unfolded with a buffet of flavors, soft music, and the gentle sway of the vessel as it glided across the calm waters. Another highlight was a beachfront seafood dinner, reminiscent of Jimbaran’s famed barbecue nights, where freshly grilled fish and lobster were enjoyed barefoot on the sand.
AYANA Komodo offers more than just a luxurious stay; it curates a narrative where every day is a chapter of discovery. From sunrise yoga and kayaking in tranquil reefs to island treks and cultural encounters, the resort orchestrates a rhythm of adventure and repose. For me, Komodo was not just about ticking off sights. It was about immersion, connection, and renewal.
In Komodo, the dragons may be the headline, but the story is larger: pink sands, starry skies, living reefs, and a luxury retreat that makes it all seamlessly possible. With AYANA as the anchor, every experience in Komodo was elevated, intimate, and unforgettable.
AYANA BALI
A Sanctuary of Elegance, Culture, and Culinary Discovery
Perched dramatically atop the limestone cliffs of Jimbaran Bay, AYANA Bali is more than a resort; it is a destination in itself, a place where luxury, heritage, and natural beauty converge to create experiences that feel at once indulgent and deeply grounding. My recent stay at the AYANA Villas was a journey into the heart of Balinese refinement, a blend of privacy, artistry, and contemporary design that left me utterly renewed.
The villa I called home was an expansive sanctuary complete with a private pool overlooking lush gardens and the ocean beyond. Sliding glass doors filled the space with natural light and breezes, a reminder that here, nature and architecture are designed to exist in harmony.
Mornings began slowly: a dip in the pool as the sun rose over the cliffs, followed by coffee and jamu tea (local herbal tea) on the terrace in blissful seclusion. Every detail of the villa, from
By Shereen Shabnam
hand-carved woodwork to marble bathrooms spoke of a deep respect for craftsmanship and sustainability.
THE SAKA MUSEUM: CULTURE AT THE HEART OF AYANA
While the villas embody serenity, the SAKA Museum on the AYANA estate offered a striking counterpoint: energy, culture, and
discovery. Recently recognized among the World’s Most Beautiful Museums 2025 by Prix Versailles, SAKA celebrates Bali’s living heritage through architecture and immersive exhibitions.
Wandering its galleries, I found myself captivated by the way tradition and innovation are intertwined. It was an experience that felt both intellectually enriching and emotionally stirring. It was a reminder that AYANA is not only a retreat but also a cultural steward.
A CULINARY VOYAGE
Dining at the different restaurants at AYANA was every bit as memorable as the surroundings. Breakfast every morning reminded me of my time viving in Asia for nine years as I savoured traditional breakfast items. One evening, I indulged in an extraordinary seafood meal, where the freshest catch of the day was prepared with
SAKA Museum
subtlety and flair, highlighting the ocean’s natural bounty.
The estate’s diverse restaurants each offered a distinct narrative: from refined Asian flavors to Mediterranean-inspired menus, every meal was a journey in itself.
Evenings lingered late, with the sound of waves crashing below and the scent of frangipani carried on the breeze.
What sets AYANA apart is the holistic nature of its luxury. It is not just the elegant design of its villas, the impeccable service, or the range of world-class dining options. It is the way each element, the architecture, culture, cuisine, and nature is thoughtfully layered into a seamless narrative of belonging.
Whether floating in a private pool, exploring Balinese heritage at SAKA, or savoring a freshly prepared seafood feast, every moment
felt both deeply personal and profoundly connected to the spirit of Bali. AYANA Bali for me was an invitation to experience the island’s essence in all its richness.
For travelers who seek privacy and indulgence but also meaning and cultural resonance, this estate that offeres different types of hotels, vilas and experiences is a sanctuary and an unforgettable chapter in the story of luxury travel.
HISTORY MEETS MODERN OPULENCE ON MALTA’S GRAND HARBOUR
Design, Gastronomy, Wellness and the Allure of Iniala Harbour House and Residences
Perched gracefully on St. Barbara Bastion, overlooking the breathtaking UNESCO-listed Grand Harbour, Iniala Harbour House & Residences is a living gallery of art, design, and Maltese heritage. As the only Forbes FiveStar property on the island, Iniala Harbour House has redefined the standard of luxury hospitality in Malta, offering a seamless blend of history, innovation, and warmth.
Spread across four lovingly restored townhouses and a collection of ancient vaults, the hotel is a testament to creative collaboration. Four acclaimed design studios have left their mark on the property. The result is an eclectic masterpiece where baroque grandeur, contemporary minimalism, and bespoke artistry come together in harmony. Every corridor, every suite, every Maltese balcony feels like an invitation to discover something unique.
By Shereen Shabnam
THE HIDEAWAY AND PRESIDENTIAL RESIDENCE
During my stay, I had the privilege of experiencing two very different yet equally enchanting facets of Iniala. My first night was spent at The Hideaway, a boutique guesthouse designed by DAAA Haus. With just four exclusive suites spread across five levels, The Hideaway feels intimate and private, yet brimming with character.
From the carefully curated furnishings to the breathtaking sea views framed by historic Maltese balconies, it strikes a perfect balance between romance and contemporary design.
For the following two nights, I moved to the Presidential Residence, a striking creation by A-Cero that crowns the Grand Residences. This suite is a marvel of modern geometry, echoing Valletta’s baroque streetscapes while
framing uninterrupted panoramas of the Grand Harbour.
Spacious, sculptural, and flooded with light, it felt like inhabiting a private art gallery suspended above history.
Every detail, from the bespoke furniture to the bold architectural forms — made the stay feel both grand and personal, an experience to be remembered long after leaving.
DINING, WELLNESS, AND HOSPITALITY
Iniala’s philosophy of luxury extends well beyond its architecture. Each morning began with an à la carte breakfast that was nothing short of divine on beautifully crafted plates showcasing seasonal ingredients, prepared with care and precision. The artistry of the breakfast service echoed the same attention

to detail found in the hotel’s Michelin-starred dining.
The highlight of my stay, however, was Iniala's Spa, Essensi, a sanctuary tucked within the ancient stone vaults. Here, history and serenity coexist in a cocoon of calm. My massage was deeply restorative, leaving me utterly relaxed, as though the weight of the city above had melted away into the cool stillness of the stone. The spa’s indoor pool and wellness facilities added to the sense of timeless luxury, an oasis within the bastion walls.
Of course, one cannot speak of Iniala without mentioning ION Harbour by Simon Rogan, Malta’s only two Michelin-starred restaurant, perched on the rooftop.
Though the restaurant merits its own dedicated story, its presence completes Iniala’s offering, positioning the hotel as not just a place to stay, but as a destination in itself for culinary connoisseurs.
A GATEWAY TO VALLETTA
One of Iniala’s greatest luxuries is its location. Just steps away lies the vibrant capital of Valletta, with its narrow limestone streets, bustling cafés, historic landmarks, and lively cultural scene. Whether exploring the nearby Upper Barrakka Gardens, embarking on a private harbour cruise, or simply strolling through the city’s heritage-rich lanes,
guests of Iniala find themselves effortlessly connected to the heartbeat of Malta.
A LASTING IMPRESSION
What truly distinguishes Iniala, however, is its people. From the moment I arrived, the staff exuded warmth, attentiveness, and genuine care. Their service was more than impeccable; it was personal.
Whether arranging experiences, anticipating needs, or simply sharing knowledge of Malta’s
history and culture, they elevated the stay into something deeply memorable.
Staying at Iniala Harbour House gave me the best of Malta. Its history, its art, its gastronomy, and its innate sense of hospitality. While tucked into the intimate romance of The Hideaway and when immersed in the grandeur of the Presidential Penthouse Residence, the experience I had in both rooms was one of timeless elegance and both drew me into its story of heritage, creativity, and unforgettable luxury.

RETAIL CONGRESS MENA 2025
DRIVING A NEW ERA OF INNOVATION IN REGIONAL RETAIL
By Shereen Shabnam
The Retail Congress MENA 2025, organized by the Middle East Council of Shopping Centres & Retailers (MECSR), returns to Dubai from October 13–14 at The Ritz Carlton, DIFC. I have been attending this for nearly a decade, and it is one of the main highlights in our event calendar.
Under the theme “Hit Reset: Transforming Retail for Impact,” the congress brings together industry leaders, innovators, developers, tech providers, and decisionmakers from across the Middle East and North Africa.
Over two dynamic days, participants will immerse themselves in inspiring keynote sessions, interactive workshops, and a cutting-edge exhibition, culminating in the prestigious MECSR Shopping Centre & Retailer MENA Awards that honour the region’s best in retail innovation and excellence. We speak to David Macadam, CEO of MECSR to find out more about the event.
WHAT
IS THE PRIMARY VISION BEHIND ‘HIT RESET: TRANSFORMING RETAIL FOR IMPACT’ AND HOW DOES THIS YEAR’S THEME REFLECT CURRENT TRENDS AND OPPORTUNITIES IN MENA’S RETAIL SECTOR?
The theme “Hit Reset: Transforming Retail for Impact” is both timely and forward-looking. The retail sector across the MENA region is undergoing significant transformation, driven by rapid urban development, the rise of digital commerce, sustainability goals, and evolving consumer expectations.
Hitting reset is about pausing, reflecting, and rethinking business models to ensure they deliver meaningful impact—economically, socially, and environmentally. This year’s theme reflects the opportunities available to retailers and developers to embrace innovation, align with Vision 2030 strategies across the region, and adapt to a new generation of consumers who demand experiences, technology integration, and responsible business practices.
COULD YOU SHARE HIGHLIGHTS OF THE EXHIBITION? WHAT KINDS OF INNOVATIONS, TECHNOLOGIES, AND SOLUTIONS WILL BE
SHOWCASED, AND HOW ARE THEY SHAPING THE FUTURE OF RETAIL IN THE REGION?
The exhibition floor will be a hub of innovation, showcasing everything from smart retail technologies and AI-driven solutions to sustainability-focused products, omnichannel platforms, and customer engagement tools. Visitors will experience first-hand how digital analytics, and immersive design concepts are reshaping the retail journey.
The exhibition also features leading developers and mall operators presenting their newest projects, which illustrate how physical retail continues to evolve as a destination for lifestyle, leisure, and community. Collectively, these innovations demonstrate how the region’s retail ecosystem is future-ready, agile, and committed to delivering value at every touchpoint.
HOW DOES RETAIL CONGRESS MENA SERVE AS A PLATFORM FOR MEANINGFUL NETWORKING AND PARTNERSHIPS?
Networking lies at the heart of Retail Congress MENA. Over two days, the event creates a highly curated environment where decisionmakers, retailers, developers, tech providers, and investors connect. Through keynote sessions, networking, and the exhibition, participants gain access not only to insights but also to potential partners.
Many of the region’s most successful retail collaborations, joint ventures, and market entries were initiated at past editions of RCM. The Retail Congress acts as a bridge— connecting global expertise with regional opportunities—ensuring that delegates leave with both knowledge and concrete relationships that can drive their business forward.
AWARDS PLAY A MAJOR ROLE IN CELEBRATING EXCELLENCE. HOW HAS THE RESPONSE BEEN THIS YEAR?
The MENA Shopping Centre & Retailer Awards have become the benchmark for excellence in the region, and this year we witnessed an outstanding response, with over 200 submissions across categories. The entries reflect not only innovation in design, leasing, marketing, and operations but also the industry’s growing commitment to sustainability, digital integration, and community impact. The finalists represent the best of what our industry has to offer— trailblazers who are pushing boundaries and raising standards. We look forward to celebrating these achievements and showcasing how retail in MENA continues to set global benchmarks.
AS RETAIL EVOLVES, DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION IS BECOMING CRITICAL. HOW ARE THESE THEMES INCORPORATED INTO RCM 2025’S AGENDA AND SPEAKER PROGRAMMING?
Digital transformation is a core pillar of this year’s agenda. We have designed sessions that cover AI, data-driven decisionmaking, omnichannel strategies, and the role of technology in enhancing customer experience. Our speaker line-up includes global tech leaders, regional innovators, and retailers who are successfully integrating digital solutions into their business models. Beyond the sessions, the exhibition itself provides live demonstrations of digital platforms and solutions. By embedding digital transformation across our programming, we are equipping delegates with the knowledge and tools needed to thrive in an increasingly technology-driven retail landscape.
LOOKING AHEAD, WHAT LEGACY OR LASTING OUTCOMES DOES MECSR HOPE TO ACHIEVE THROUGH THIS RETAIL CONGRESS?
Our goal is for Retail Congress MENA 2025 to leave a lasting impact by inspiring bold thinking, sparking collaborations, and accelerating transformation across the industry. The legacy we aim to create is one of resilience, sustainability, and innovation— where retail is not just about transactions, but about building communities, enriching lifestyles, and driving regional economic growth.
For MECSR, the Congress also serves as a platform to reinforce our commitment to supporting members, advancing professional development, and championing the evolution of retail in MENA. Ultimately, we want delegates to walk away empowered, connected, and ready to shape the future of retail with confidence and purpose.

THE PSYCHOLOGY OF LUXURY SPACES
DESIGNING FOR WELL-BEING
Managing Partner at Kleindienst Group,
Parisa Seif shares her thoughts on how quiet luxury is not a trend but a return to focus on holistic wellbeing
I've spent the better part of two decades watching Dubai transform from an ambitious vision to global reality. Yet in all those years of witnessing record-breaking towers and boundary-pushing developments, nothing has fascinated me more than the quiet revolution happening in luxury real estate today. We are witnessing a fundamental shift in what the world's wealthiest individuals truly value, and it's not what you might expect.
The numbers tell a compelling story. Dubai saw 435 home sales above $10 million in 2024, the most of any city globally, with a further 111 in Q1 2025 alone. But here's what the statistics don't reveal: over 90% of these high-end buyers now name wellness features as their top priorities. Clean air, abundant natural light, access to nature and premium wellness amenities, all these have become the new markers of true luxury.
THE NEW BOTTOM LINE
We are seeing a paradigm shift among the ultra-high net worth second home buyers: the idea that true wealth is no longer about owning the biggest or the tallest. It's about how well you live.
This transformation shift reflects something profound about human psychology. After years of pursuing external symbols of success, today's global elite are seeking spaces that nurture their inner wellbeing. They're investing not just in properties, but in sanctuaries that support longevity, mental clarity, and emotional balance.
At The Heart of Europe, our six-island development on Dubai's World Islands, we've been quietly nurturing this philosophy, before wellness became the industry buzzword. When we embarked on this journey, we asked ourselves a fundamental question: what if luxury spaces could actively improve how we live rather than just reflecting what we own?
THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS
The quest to create meaningful experiential living has led us down fascinating paths. We brought in world-renowned Feng Shui Master Victor Li Dexiong to guide our architectural and landscaping planning from inception. His expertise in harmonising energy flow with our Western design sensibilities created unique spaces where Eastern wisdom meets
Middle Eastern ambition and European sophistication.
But Feng Shui is just one thread in a much larger tapestry. Our tropical forests feature over 60 exotic plant species, arranged not merely for foliage but for their positive impact on residents and guests. We've created micro-jungles that evoke tropical tranquillity while maintaining eco-friendly pesticide and fungicide-free environments.
The psychology behind this approach is fascinating. Research consistently shows that access to nature reduces cortisol levels, improves cognitive function, and enhances overall life satisfaction.
The most discerning buyers today aren't asking about square footage or ceiling height, they value privacy, exclusivity, air quality, natural light patterns, and how the space will make them feel.
This shift has profound implications for our industry. The UAE's hospitality market is projected to reach $27.34 billion in 2025, growing to over $35 billion by 2030, with wellness and luxury as the primary drivers. Dubai alone is set to contribute over $53 billion to GDP from travel, tourism, and hospitality sectors in 2025, making it the world's most profitable tourism city per visitor.
FROM CONCEPT TO REALITY
We have responded to this evolution with developments like our recently launched Hygge Hotel, focusing to create a “Journey of Happiness” centred around the Danish concept of finding deep contentment in life's simple pleasures. Every design decision, from light-filled communal spaces to natureinspired therapies, was made with guest wellbeing at its core. It's not simply following a trend; it's setting a precedent for how luxury hospitality can prioritise holistic wellbeing.
The technical aspects of wellbeing-focused design extend far beyond aesthetics. Our properties feature superior acoustic and heat insulation, solar-powered systems that eliminate environmental stress, and car-free environments that promote tranquillity. We are the first-ever real estate developer to establish a Coral Institute, which is dedicated to growing and rehabilitating marine life in
the Arabian Gulf, because true luxury must be sustainable.
THE FUTURE IS HUMANCENTRED
In a world of constant connectivity and urban development, people crave spaces that reconnect them with themselves and nature. They're seeking environments that support not just their lifestyle aspirations, but their deepest need for restoration and renewal.
As a woman who has navigated the traditionally male-dominated world of Middle Eastern real estate for decades, I have learned that the most innovative solutions often come from listening, really listening, to what people need rather than what they think they want. Today's luxury buyers are telling us they want to live better, not just bigger.
The future of luxury real estate lies not in outdoing yesterday's grandest structures, but in creating tomorrow's most nurturing environments. At Kleindienst Group, we're not just building properties; we're crafting havens that honour both intentional living, human psychology and environmental stewardship. Because ultimately, the greatest luxury of all is the gift of wellbeing. And spaces that actively cultivate it will define the next chapter of ultra-high-net-worth living.

MALTA’S WELLNESS RENAISSANCE THAT BLENDS HERITAGE, HEALING, AND HOLISTIC WELLBEING
Ayurveda rituals, luxury spa sanctuaries, and holistic retreats are making Malta one of Europe’s most alluring wellness destinations
By Shereen Shabnam
Malta may be best known for its historic fortifications and sunlit harbours, but it is also fast becoming a coveted destination for wellness travellers. Across the island, luxury hotels are integrating holistic wellness into their identity, creating havens where guests can nurture mind, body, and spirit. From spa journeys rooted in Ayurveda to retreats designed around the five pillars of wellbeing, Malta offers restorative sanctuaries as enriching as its cultural treasures.
ESSENSI SPA AT INIALA HARBOUR HOUSE
Among the island’s most captivating spa
experiences is the Essensi by Dee Spas at Iniala Harbour House. Stepping into the spa, situated deep within the historic hotel’s stone vaults, is to enter another world: serene, timeless, and profoundly calming.
Here, aesthetic beauty pairs with bespoke therapies designed to restore inner balance. Facilities include single and double treatment rooms, a sauna, heated pool, relaxation area, and private changing suites.
A highlight is the Ayurvedic offering, where personalised oil blends and ancient practices guide the body back to equilibrium. My onehour full-body massage here was nothing
short of transformative, leaving me both rebalanced and renewed.
ME BY MELIA IN MALTA
Equally indulgent, the spa at ME Malta blends sleek modern design with a holistic menu. The facilities here are world-class, featuring an indoor heated pool, herbal bath, saunas, steam rooms, couples’ treatment suites, and serene relaxation areas. Guests are pampered with thoughtful touches like complimentary robes and towels, and even a spa bar with light menus to extend the experience.
I experienced a revitalising half-hour back massage here, but the options span far wider.
The Essensi Spa at Ianala Harbour
The treatment menu offers Ayurveda rituals and prenatal therapies to holistic experiences, facials, scrubs, wraps, and express spa options for those on the go. Whether for a short escape or a day-long journey, ME by Melia’s spa is a sanctuary of calm that elevates any stay in Malta.
VERDALA WELLNESS HOTEL
On the edge of Rabat, with sweeping countryside views near the ancient walls of Mdina, the Verdala Wellness Hotel is Malta’s newest five-star retreat. More than just a spa, Verdala embraces a holistic lifestyle philosophy that integrates nutrition, movement, mindfulness, and community connection. Its approach harmoniously blends
natural therapies with Maltese traditions and advanced wellness technology. Each guest embarks on a personalised wellness journey, beginning with insightful diagnostics and unfolding into practices that restore balance and vitality. Walking through Verdala’s serene spaces, I was struck by its emphasis on stillness and reflection. It is a retreat where time slows and wellbeing takes centre stage.
PHOENICIA SPA & WELLNESS
Finally, The Phoenicia in Valletta offers a spa experience that beautifully bridges Malta’s heritage with contemporary sophistication. Built around an historic wall that runs through the property, the space blends walnut timber, marble, and Maltese stone into a soothing sanctuary. During my tour, I came across facilities that include an indoor pool, sauna, steam rooms, salt room, and a fitness suite. These are complemented by treatments ranging from reflexology to hot stone massages and non-invasive facials. It is an urban retreat where tradition and innovation meet, all in the heart of Malta’s capital.
INA SPA - BARCELÓ FORTINA MALTA
During my visit to Malta, I toured the elegant Barceló Fortina Malta, a seafront retreat in Sliema that seamlessly combines luxury
with wellness. A SYMPHONY OF FLAVOURS
Fine Dining with a Conscious Heart at ION Harbour
There are dining experiences that delight the senses, and then there are those that linger long after the last bite, unfolding like a story that intertwines heritage, innovation, and vision. ION Harbour by Simon Rogan, perched atop the Iniala Harbour House in Valletta, belongs to the latter.
With its unrivalled views of the UNESCO-listed Grand Harbour, this two-Michelin-starred restaurant is as much about place and provenance as it is about culinary artistry.
The mastermind behind this narrative is Simon Rogan MBE, internationally renowned as a pioneer of the farm-to-table movement and Malta is the latest chapter in his journey, where under the leadership of and Head Chef Christian Cali, ION Harbour has carved its own identity while staying faithful to Rogan’s ethos of sustainability and innovation .
By Shereen Shabnam
From the moment the first course arrived, the evening felt like an ode to Malta’s landscape and seasons. A delicate carrot tartlet layered with lampuki cured in Gozo salts introduced itself with a whisper of the sea, lifted by grapefruit and finished with the silken touch of whipped rock oysters.
It was a prelude that carried the essence of Malta’s coastline, setting the stage for the 13-course journey ahead. Each plate that followed unfolded as a chapter, weaving together ingredients foraged, farmed, or fished from the island and its surrounding waters.
One of the most memorable courses was a truffle pudding glazed in carob molasses and stout. It was earthy, dark, and indulgent, yet unexpectedly balanced with sweetness. An aerated and salt-baked boltardy beetroot dish was elevated with ember-smoked amberjack
and blackberries, its layers of flavour recalling fire and forest, land and sea.
The raw south coast rossi prawn with sea jelly carried a delicate whisper of brine, punctuated by whey and the subtle salt of smoked pike perch roe. Later, a stuffed day boat seabass arrived, paired with courgettes and watercress and brought together by a roasted bone sauce that spoke to the kitchen’s dedication to whole-animal use and depth of flavour.
Desserts carried the same balance of elegance and restraint. A fig leaf mousse with cherry plums and hazelnuts was a revelation, delicate yet complex, an ode to the Mediterranean orchard.
The closing Koji waffle with sheep’s yoghurt and strawberry jam, meanwhile, perfectly encapsulated the restaurant’s mastery of
fermentation and preservation, traditions deeply tied to both Maltese culture and Rogan’s philosophy of reducing waste.
What elevated the experience into new territory was the decision to forgo wine in favour of a soft pairing — an innovative curation of kombucha infusions, mocktails, and cordials. Far from a secondary option, each drink mirrored the sophistication of its dish, drawing from preserved fruits, foraged herbs, and carefully fermented bases.
A kombucha laced with citrus peel resonated with the brightness of seafood courses, while a mushroom cordial deepened the flavours of earthy mains.
These pairings not only refreshed the palate but also embodied the creativity and sustainability that define ION Harbour.
Beyond the table, the restaurant’s commitment to sustainability is profound. The team liaise with local fishermen, salt farmers, goat herders, and honey producers, safeguarding traditions and even reviving endangered breeds and species.
Waste becomes an opportunity and fruit skins are turned into vinegars, mushroom trimmings into cordials, and surplus milk into a caramelised goat’s milk jam that supports local farmers. Foraged herbs and seasonal fruits are not only celebrated on the plate but also in the soft pairings, creating a closed loop between land, sea, and table.
The luxury of ION Harbour does not lie in opulence alone, but in thoughtfulness. It is luxury redefined and where innovation honours tradition, while fine dining becomes a celebration of both flavour and responsibility.
In the heart of Valletta, with history spread out across the Grand Harbour below, the restaurant offers not just a meal, but a vision: that the future of gastronomy is sustainable, imaginative, and deeply rooted in its place.

ECHOES OF MALTA
By Shereen Shabnam
The oyster shells, sculpted and stylised, evoke sea-worn textures, salt, and the island’s marine identity.
Azzopardi’s design philosophy is deeply rooted in place. In Malta, where temples stand millennia beyond memory and the sea laps against limestone ramparts, inspiration is everywhere. The designer draws freely from these textures. His metals curve like ribs; his surfaces echo eroded rock, pitted and polished. His pieces feel carved rather than cast, as though they have first existed in stone or coral, then translated into semi precious metals.
In a quiet creative space, amid the silent shells and weathered bones, lies the creative impetus behind Luke Azzopardi Studio’s jewellery. Far from simply crafting adornments, Azzopardi designs wearable stories— pieces that reflect the layered geology and layered histories of his homeland. Each ring, earring, and pendant feels less like an accessory and more like a fragment recovered, refined, and resurrected for the present.
During a visit to his studio and perusing through his Jewellery Collection, one is drawn to works like Cygnus Bone Collier, Ancient Oyster Earrings, and Adam’s Rib, each title a poetic entanglement of form and lore. These designs echo skeletal structures, ribs, and marine relics, marrying these natural symbols to fine metals and thoughtful craftsmanship.
What distinguishes his work also is the balance between statement and subtlety. Though bold in concept, many pieces remain light and wearable. The Mushroom Relic Earrings whisper of forest undergrowth and fungus forms; Adam’s Rib pairs stark minimalism with soft curvature. Meanwhile Ancient Oyster Earrings become a quiet homage to the sea’s silent archive, allowing the wearer to carry a piece of coast as their homage to their surroundings.
Azzopardi also works in limited editions and allows bespoke commissions, with the same respect for narrative and material. Whether you choose a ready piece or co-create a unique design, you become part of the dialogue between object and origin.
His pieces reminds the wearer that beauty, history, and memory can live on the body with stories waiting to be told.
MÉTIERS D’ART – TRIBUTE TO THE QUEST OF TIME
VACHERON CONSTANTIN’S MASTERPIECE OF CELESTIAL ARTISTRY AND INNOVATION
By Natasha Dury
When it comes to haute horlogerie, Vacheron Constantin has always stood at the intersection of artistry and innovation. This year, in honour of its 270th anniversary, the Maison has unveiled a masterpiece that feels more like a cosmic journey than a wristwatch. It is the Métiers d’Art – Tribute to the Quest of Time.
Limited to only 20 pieces worldwide, it is a creation designed to mesmerise collectors and inspire anyone who has ever gazed at the stars and wondered about humanity’s timeless relationship with the heavens.
At first glance, the watch is a piece of art. A golden figure stands in the centre of the dial, its arms elegantly sweeping across arcs to reveal the hours and minutes. This display
is both playful and poetic, inspired by the Maison’s 1930 Bras en l’Air pocket watch yet reimagined for today. Owners can choose to view the time continuously, or only when prompted, adding an element of surprise and theatre to the ritual of checking the hour.
The front dial tells a story that transcends mechanics. Against a celestial backdrop, the night sky is recreated exactly as it appeared over Geneva on 17 September 1755 — the date of Vacheron Constantin’s founding.
Stars glisten on a graduated blue canvas, a luminous moon hovers in three dimensions, and twin arcs trace the passage of time with elegant symmetry. It is both an instrument and a tableau, marrying astronomical wonder with artistic finesse.
On the reverse, the watch continues its dialogue with the cosmos. Here, a sky chart brings the constellations to life in real time, tracking the sidereal day with extraordinary accuracy. It is a reminder that this timepiece is not only about hours and minutes but about the infinite sweep of celestial motion. It is a poetic bridge between the wearer and the universe.
Behind this artistry lies an extraordinary dedication to craftsmanship. The movement itself, with over 500 individually finished components, took three years to perfect. While collectors will admire the technical brilliance, what makes this watch so compelling for a broader audience is how seamlessly it blends cutting-edge watchmaking with artistry, storytelling, and heritage. Every element, from the patinated figure to the polished moon and the engraved constellations, is handcrafted with meticulous detail, turning mechanics into magic.
The Métiers d’Art – Tribute to the Quest of Time is a celebration of culture, history, and the very human fascination with measuring and understanding time. By blending astronomy, traditional craftsmanship, and modern design, Vacheron Constantin has created something profoundly moving in a watch that doesn’t just tell time, but tells a story.
For collectors, connoisseurs, and dreamers alike, this is a piece that epitomises what true luxury means: exclusivity, artistry, and the ability to transcend the everyday.

AMOUAGE OPUS XVI – TIMBER
A Homage to Nature’s Timeless Wisdom
By Verna S.
The esteemed Omani High Perfumery House of Amouage expands its celebrated Library Collection with Opus XVI – Timber, a fragrance that pays tribute to the ancient wisdom of nature’s most enduring creations. Conceptualised by Chief Creative Officer Renaud Salmon and brought to life by perfumer Alexis Grugeon, this bold composition celebrates permanence, strength, and erudition through a near-entirely wood-based olfactory journey.
The inspiration draws from two of the world’s most symbolic trees: the majestic giant sequoias of California, which have stood as guardians of time for millennia, and Oman’s frankincense trees, which have shaped trade, culture, and spirituality across centuries. Together, they embody resilience, knowledge, and continuity - ideals that resonate deeply within Amouage’s heritage.
Opus XVI – Timber opens with the luminous facets of Cypress, Cardamom, Juniper, Pink Pepper, and Cocoa, bringing brightness and
modernity to the composition. At its heart, Lavandin, Fir Balsam, and prized Hojari Frankincense infuse the fragrance with aromatic energy and a sense of movement. The base is a powerful foundation of Palo Santo, Sandalwood, Cedarwood, Patchouli, and Vanilla Bourbon, a lasting accord that feels monumental yet approachable, echoing the grandeur of towering trees.
Presented in the iconic khanjarshaped flacon in a serene Cashmere hue, Opus XVI – Timber is further elevated by outer packaging designed by Belgian artist Louise Mertens. Its striking vertical motif mirrors the majesty of trees rising skyward, symbolising both rooted history and endless growth.
With its 25% concentration and artisanal craftsmanship, Opus XVI – Timber is a contemplative work of art. Monumental, enduring, and profoundly elegant, it channels the spirit of the Library Collection by uniting heritage, creativity, and innovation in a timeless expression of scent.

My Journey Through Lorenzo Agius’s LOOK AT ME FRAMING ICONS, REVEALING TRUTHS
Stepping into LOOK AT ME: Framing the Iconic at Spazju Kreattiv in Valletta felt like crossing into a world where art, memory, and celebrity merged into one immersive experience. For me, this was not just a retrospective of Lorenzo Agius’s remarkable career. It was a personal journey through faces and stories that have shaped my own cultural memory.
The first thing that struck me was the sheer presence of the portraits. Larger than life,
By Shereen Shabnam
displayed without glass, they felt alive, as if the subjects were there in the room, waiting to be engaged. Seeing some of my favourite personalities up close through Lorenzo’s lens was nothing short of exhilarating.
The famous Trainspotting cast portraits radiated that rebellious, electric energy that defined the 1990s, an era I remember vividly. Then came the familiar faces of global icons like Madonna, David Beckham, the Spice Girls, Jack Nicholson, all captured
not in contrived glamour but in unguarded moments of humour, attitude, and humanity.
It was deeply moving to see these images in Malta, knowing that Lorenzo’s own Maltese roots shaped the humility and authenticity behind his practice.
Behind every carefully managed public image, his portraits reveal flickers of vulnerability, laughter, or stillness. Those
fleeting truths made me feel closer to people I had admired from afar for years.
The exhibition’s design intensified this sense of intimacy. Soundscapes, projections, and clever spatial arrangements evoked the atmosphere of Agius’s shoots, allowing us to step into his process. Each room carried its own emotional temperature, from playful to contemplative, mirroring the rhythm of his subjects’ personalities. At times it felt as though I was standing in a cinematic frame myself, swept into the energy of his creativity.
What resonated most was the dialogue between past and present. His group portraits echoed the grandeur of Baroque painting, while his use of light recalled Old Master portraiture, a reminder that portrait photography, at its best, is not just about capturing likeness but about continuing a centuries-old conversation on how we see and remember people.
For Malta, this exhibition is a milestone: a cultural homecoming that places the nation firmly on the international art map. For me, it was an unforgettable afternoon spent in the company of icons I have long admired, filtered through the artistry of a photographer who understands that to frame the iconic is to frame the human.
LOOK AT ME: Framing the Iconic is not just an exhibition. It is an invitation to connect, to remember, and to celebrate the faces that have defined our times.
SUNREEF 65M EXPLORER REDEFINING CATAMARAN GRANDEUR A Bold Statement in Luxury, Adventure, and Innovation
By Shereen Shabnam
Sunreef Yachts has once again pushed the boundaries of superyacht design with the reveal of its most ambitious project yet — the 65M Sunreef Explorer. At 65 metres long and boasting a remarkable 1,800 GT, this flagship concept stands as the largest luxury catamaran ever conceived, marrying opulent living with true expedition capabilities.
Aimed at owners who crave both indulgence and discovery, the 65M Explorer balances lavish amenities with engineering designed for long-range voyages. She offers seven double guest cabins, two pools, expansive lounges, and a beach club that transforms seamlessly into a waterside gallery with fold-down platforms, a gym, and toy storage. With
accommodation for 22 crew, service is elevated to the highest standards, ensuring every adventure is accompanied by unrivalled comfort.
The crown jewel of the yacht is the owner’s suite, perched on the upper deck with panoramic floor-to-ceiling windows. A private foredeck lounge, walk-in wardrobe, his-and-hers bathrooms, and even a two-person bathtub add to the sense of exclusivity.
Two VIP suites and four additional guest cabins extend this refined luxury to family and guests. Social life aboard flourishes with both formal and informal dining areas, a moon-shaped bridge deck bar, panoramic lounges, and extensive
sun terraces — all designed to create the perfect backdrop for entertaining or unwinding at sea.
True to its explorer spirit, the aft beach club is an architectural marvel. Steps lead down from the pool area to yacht skirts, which can merge into a vast platform right at the water’s edge. The space can accommodate a 7-metre tender, multiple jet skis, or be transformed into a beachside lounge. Adventure is further enhanced with a retractable A-frame crane for handling tenders, submersibles, or even a 45ft chase boat. Cruising speeds of 14 knots and a top speed of 18 knots ensure effortless journeys across the globe.
Design-wise, Sunreef has successfully translated the DNA of its celebrated smaller models onto a much grander scale. Massive reverse bows, darkened glass, and elegant curves give the yacht its commanding presence, while below deck, efficiency and autonomy underline its explorer credentials.
The 65M Sunreef Explorer doesn’t just embody luxury—it sets a new standard for catamarans in the superyacht sector, where indulgence and adventure sail hand in hand.

FROM MALTA TO THE WORLD AN ART HISTORIAN’S JOURNEY
From an early age, I was captivated by the way art can tell stories that transcend time and place. That curiosity grew into a vocation: today, I am Associate Professor of Art History at the University of Malta, where I lecture and research on Medieval, Renaissance, and Mediterranean art, with a particular focus on the cultural networks that shaped Malta’s artistic identity. My journey reflects both a love of learning and a belief in opening doors for others.
As both an educator and scholar, I believe that teaching art history is more than analysing artworks: it is about uncovering how art reflects wider histories of power and faith, and inspiring my students to find fresh relevance in the past.
I am honoured to be the first female fulltime academic in the Department of Art and Art History at the University of Malta, a milestone for both my career and our family. My greatest privilege is mentoring a new generation of art historians, witnessing my students find their own voices both in Malta and internationally, and expanding horizons through education.
Throughout this journey, my two young sons, aged eight and six, have been invaluable for balancing work and family, which has both challenged and shaped me. My husband, who is also an academic, shares my love for pursuing research and travelling.
My academic path began in Malta, expanded at the University of Warwick (UK), and thrived through international collaborations, most notably with Professor Donal Cooper (now at Cambridge). By presenting research across Europe and America, contributing to conversations on Medieval and Renaissance art and architecture, and engaging in technical art history and digital humanities, I continue to share and deepen Malta’s role as a cultural crossroads.
Beyond academia, over the past three years, I have curated exhibitions at the Palm Court Lounge at The Phoenicia Malta and collaborated with national institutions, creating opportunities for artists and audiences to engage with Maltese culture. I am the curator of “LOOK AT ME: Framing the Iconic,” a retrospective exhibition of photographer Lorenzo Agius, open at Spazju Kreattiv, Valletta until 2 November.
Receiving Malta’s National Mara (Woman) Award in March 2025 was a humbling recognition. For me, art history is a bridge: between past and present, scholarship and public life, nations and generations. Sharing Malta’s stories globally, learning from my
students, and growing alongside my family strengthen the cultural ties that art makes possible.
