Volkswagen’s strong global identity is renowned, yet Matthias emphasizes the importance of adapting to regional nuances to enhance customer experience. "Our approach focuses on delivering value, especially for families," he shares, pointing to the SUV's appeal among local families who prioritize versatility, spaciousness, and advanced safety. "The Tiguan and other SUVs in our line-up offer the perfect balance of capacity and comfort for growing families who need ample luggage space, multiple seating options, and, of course, peace of mind on the road."

Volkswagen’s legacy in the Middle East is marked by long-standing partnerships and a deep commitment to the region. “In Kuwait, we have been present for over 70 years, dating back to 1954. Our importers in the UAE have partnered with us for more than 35 years,” Matthias explains.

As one of the year’s most anticipated models, the new Tiguan is much more than a facelift. “Design is key,” Matthias points out. “It is arguably the most beautiful SUV in the compact segment, blending Volkswagen’s signature dynamic styling with cutting-edge technology.” From a stunning 15-inch centre screen to ambient lighting and expanded boot space, the new Tiguan embodies the latest in VW DNA. Whether cruising through city streets or exploring the rugged landscapes of the region, it combines comfort and versatility with precision, making it a standout in the SUV market.

Volkswagen’s portfolio in the Middle East demonstrates a strong commitment to making SUVs that are as affordable as they are reliable. "We want to be a people’s brand here—bringing competitive, familyfriendly models to the market that deliver on value without compromising on quality," Matthias notes.

Volkswagen is leading the change towards sustainability in Europe, and Matthias is optimistic about extending this vision to the Middle East when the infrastructure is right. “Volkswagen holds the No. 1 spot in Europe for electric vehicles, and we believe that sustainable mobility is essential,” he says. “However, creating a truly sustainable future requires a joint effort between car manufacturers and governments to develop the necessary charging infrastructure.”
REVOLUTIONIZING THE DRIVING EXPERIENCE WITH CONNECTIVITY
As the automotive industry advances towards a digital future, Volkswagen’s latest models are at the forefront of connected technology. "Our cars are intelligent," Matthias remarks, describing features like Apple CarPlay integration, customizable digital cockpits, and comprehensive driverassist functions. He highlights the safety features that have become a hallmark of the brand, including front assist, blind-spot detection, and an advanced fatigue sensor that can alert drowsy drivers. “These technologies aren’t just add-ons; they’re woven into the VW driving experience, enhancing both safety and comfort.”

For Matthias, the future of Volkswagen in the Middle East is about more than just vehicles; it’s about building a connected and engaged community. “One of the highlights of my role is engaging with our incredible partners and fans,” he reflects. From brand experience days in Oman, where over 150 sales consultants gathered to dive into Volkswagen’s values, to events like the recent GTI Fan Fest, Matthias sees a growing fan base energized by VW’s presence. “Our partners are crucial to this journey—they’re investing in new touchpoints to enhance the customer experience, creating spaces where VW fans can truly connect with the brand.”

A Journey Through Time, Color, and Imagination with Silvio Morelli Picasso

Recently I ventured into Florence to meet with artist Silvio Morelli Picasso, whose childhood was a canvas painted with the hues of Renaissance masterpieces, Baroque grandeur, and the avant-garde strokes of modernism.
Often hailed as the modern-day Picasso, Silvio’s style is a unique blend of abstract expressionism and surrealism, with a distinct nod to the cubist influences of Pablo Picasso.
Born and raised in Italy, a country synonymous with artistic genius, Silvio’s artistic journey began at a young age, inspired by the rich cultural heritage and artistic legacy of his homeland. His early exposure to the works of great Italian masters fuelled his passion for art, leading him to pursue formal training in fine arts. He was cradled in an environment where art is not just admired but revered.
He is a contemporary artist whose work transcends the conventional boundaries of art and his canvases are vibrant tapestries of colour, form, and emotion, where each stroke tells a story, and every colour evokes a feeling. Silvio’s art is not just seen; it is experienced, inviting viewers to see reality and imagination merge seamlessly.

Visiting his enclave in the hills of a quaint village outside Florence, we immersed ourselves in the vibrant tapestry of contemporary art where Silvio emerges as a shining thread, intertwining the rich legacy of Italian artistry with the innovative spirit of modern expression.
Sylvio’s artistic journey is a testament to his relentless pursuit of innovation and his deep reverence for tradition. His style is a harmonious fusion of abstract expressionism and surrealism, with a palpable influence of cubism, a nod to his father, the legendary Pablo Picasso. Silvio’s work is a dialogue between the past and the present, a blend of classical beauty and contemporary chaos.
As we explored the artefacts and looked through the many pieces at his villa which is open for events, we found Silvio’s canvases are not mere pieces of art; they are portals to a realm where colours and emotions swirl in harmony and tell a story.
Each piece crafted by Silvio is a narrative, a slice of his soul etched in paint and canvas. His art is a reflection of his introspections, a visual representation of his thoughts on humanity, society, and the cosmos.
Silvio’s paintings invite the viewer on a journey, a voyage into the depths of the human psyche, urging them to explore the labyrinth of their own emotions and perceptions.
As we walk through the villa, we find that Silvio’s artistic repertoire extends beyond the confines of traditional painting. His explorations have led him into the realms of sculpture and digital art, showcasing his versatility and his constant quest for new modes of expression. His sculptures, much like his paintings, are embodiments of emotion, each curve and contour a whisper of his artistic voice.
The alternate realm has offered Silvio a new canvas, a space where technology and art converge. His creations are a fusion of the tangible and the virtual, a blend of classical techniques and futuristic visions. In this digital landscape, Morelli continues to push boundaries, to challenge the conventional, and to explore the infinite possibilities of artistic creation.
Silvio’s work often reflects his deep contemplation on human nature,
society, and the universe. His art is a dialogue between the artist and the world, a reflection of his thoughts, dreams, and observations. Through his art, Morelli challenges viewers to look beyond the surface, to explore the depths of their own consciousness, and to find beauty in the chaos of life.
Silvio’s impact on the art world is undeniable. His exhibitions have graced the walls of prestigious galleries and art fairs across Europe and beyond, captivating audiences with their depth and beauty. His work has found a home in the collections of art aficionados and connoisseurs, each piece a testament to
Silvio’s genius. During our visit, we had stopped for lunch at a family-owned restaurant where Silvio knew exactly what to order for our meal.
During our conversation, we find out about his talents as a chef of over 20 years, his love for gastronomy and the many countries where he has cooked for a high-profile clientele.
As Silvio continues to weave his magic through his food and art, he remains a beacon of inspiration and innovation in both worlds he is passionate about. His work is a bridge between eras, a celebration of the timeless beauty of art,
and a tribute to the enduring legacy of Picasso.
In a world where art is constantly evolving, Silvio stands out as an artist who honours the legacy of the past while boldly forging his own path.
His art is a testament to the enduring power of creativity, a reminder that true art knows no bounds, and a tribute to the timeless influence of Picasso.

CIRCULAR ECONOMY A CORNERSTONE OF SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

The UAE has established a robust framework for the circular economy, embedding its principles and practices as a cornerstone of sustainable economic growth. This comprehensive vision aligns with the nation's commitment to environmental preservation and longterm sustainability by reducing waste of natural resources and reusing and recycling products, as opposed to the traditional linear economy model, which relies on extracting, manufacturing, consuming, and then discarding products.
The circular economy seeks to redefine economic growth by prioritising positive impacts on both the environment and society. The significance of the circular economy is multifaceted. It conserves natural resources, protects biodiversity, and reduces carbon emissions, all while enhancing resource use efficiency. Economically, it lowers costs related to extraction of raw materials and waste management and by fostering the development of new, sustainable technologies and products. Moreover, the circular economy strengthens local communities by reducing reliance on imported raw materials and supporting local industries centred on recycling and resource efficiency.
The UAE Circular Economy Policy 2021–2031 serves as a comprehensive framework for the nation’s commitment to sustainable governance and the optimal utilisation of natural resources. Key priorities under this policy include developing sustainable infrastructure, advancing sustainable transportation, promoting sustainable manufacturing, and ensuring sustainable food production and consumption. The policy aims to foster sustainable production and consumption patterns, secure the supply of raw materials, enhance competitiveness, and minimise resource waste. This initiative aligns with the UAE’s Green Agenda 2030 and the UAE Centennial 2071.
The UAE has introduced 22 new policies to support and expedite the transition to a circular economy across key sectors, including manufacturing and food production. These efforts align with the UAE’s vision to double economic growth by 2031 while significantly reducing its carbon footprint. A notable initiative under the Circular Economy Policy is the ‘Every Can Counts’ campaign, launched during COP28, which the UAE hosted at Expo City Dubai last year. The UAE is the first country in the Middle East to join this global campaign, which aims to enhance resource recovery and prevent aluminium waste from reaching landfills, in accordance with circular economy
principles and efforts to reduce emissions. As part of this programme, the UAE COP28 Presidency, along with global aluminium industry leaders, has set an ambitious target to achieve at least 80% aluminium beverage can recycling by 2030 and nearly 100% by 2050. Recycling aluminium requires 95% less energy compared to producing new metal and emits only a fraction of the greenhouse gases. Globally, recycling all used aluminium beverage cans could reduce 60 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions annually.
The circular economy is a central pillar of the 10th edition of the World Green Economy Summit (WGES) under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. The summit underscores the UAE’s commitment to global climate action and the achievement
of the Sustainable Development Goals. WGES provides a premier platform to showcase innovative solutions and foster international cooperation in critical areas, including the circular economy, reducing carbon emissions, clean energy, and climate finance.
At this year’s summit, organised by the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, Dubai Electricity and Water Authority, and the World Green Economy Organization, and scheduled for 2–3 October 2024 at the Dubai World Trade Centre, we will continue to underline the critical factors for successfully implementing the circular economy model. We look forward to fruitful discussions that will focus on advancing from recycling to reuse, redesigning products to increase their lifespan and reduce overall waste, boosting economic growth, and laying the groundwork for a green, resilient, and sustainable future.

The Copperleaf Community Accelerate Program represents another strategic collaboration aimed at enriching asset management capabilities. By integrating IFS operational data with Copperleaf’s
Asset Investment Planning (AIP) solutions, this program helps organizations make better-informed, strategic decisions about capital investments.
This is designed to enhance efficiency and optimize expenditure, supporting sustainable growth and value creation across utilities and infrastructure-heavy industries. Integrating IFS's operational data capabilities with Copperleaf’s planning solutions will empower organizations to make strategic, data-

ADVANCED ASSET LIFECYCLE MANAGEMENT
A dedicated session by Kevin Price, IFS's Global Head of EAM, spotlighted the future of Asset Lifecycle Management (ALM). IFS, in collaboration with Copperleaf, now offers the market's first and only comprehensive solution for end-to-end ALM. This integration supports complete lifecycle management from acquisition through operations and maintenance to decommissioning, facilitating strategic allocation and execution of CAPEX and OPEX while balancing business objectives, risk management, and optimal asset performance.

Notably, the new AI-driven features, like the dynamic AI-powered homepage and deeper integration of the IFS.ai Copilot,
streamline operations and provide context-aware insights that enhance strategic planning and operational agility.
The partnership with Rolls-Royce Power Systems to implement IFS Cloud’s AI solutions also underscores the platform’s robust capabilities in enhancing global service operations and sustainability practices. This collaboration will leverage IFS's advanced scheduling and optimization tools to improve service delivery and operational efficiency at Rolls-Royce, showcasing the scalability and impact of IFS solutions in high-stakes environments.

While threat actors continue to rely on many "classic" tactics that have existed for decades, our threat predictions for the coming year largely focus on cybercriminals embracing bigger, bolder, and—from their perspectives— better attacks. From Cybercrime-asa-Service (CaaS) groups becoming more specialized to adversaries using sophisticated playbooks that combine both digital and physical threats, cybercriminals are upping the ante to execute more targeted and harmful attacks.
In our 2025 threat predictions report, our FortiGuard Labs team looks at tried-andtrue attacks cybercriminals continue to rely on and how these have evolved, shares fresh threat trends to watch for this year and beyond, and offers advice on how organizations worldwide can
enhance their resilience in the face of a changing threat landscape.
EMERGING THREAT TRENDS TO WATCH FOR IN 2025 AND BEYOND
As cybercrime evolves, we anticipate seeing several unique trends emerge in 2025 and beyond. Here’s a glimpse of what we expect.
MORE ATTACK CHAIN EXPERTISE EMERGES
In recent years, cybercriminals have been spending more time “left of boom” on the reconnaissance and weaponization phases of the cyber kill chain. As a result, threat actors can carry out targeted attacks quickly and more precisely. In the past, we’ve observed many CaaS providers serving as jacks of all trades—
offering buyers everything needed to execute an attack, from phishing kits to payloads.
However, we expect that CaaS groups will increasingly embrace specialization, with many groups focusing on providing offerings that home in on just one segment of the attack chain.
IT’S CLOUD(Y) WITH A CHANCE OF CYBERATTACKS
While targets like edge devices will continue to capture the attention of threat actors, there’s another part of the attack surface that defenders must pay close attention to over the next few years: their cloud environments.
Although cloud isn't new, it's increasingly piquing the interest of cybercriminals. Given that most organizations rely
on multiple cloud providers, it’s not surprising that we’re observing more cloud-specific vulnerabilities being leveraged by attackers, anticipating that this trend will grow in the future.
AUTOMATED HACKING TOOLS MAKE THEIR WAY TO THE DARK WEB MARKETPLACE
A seemingly endless number of attack vectors and associated code are now available through the CaaS market, such as phishing kits, Ransomwareas-a-Service, DDoS-as-a-Service, and more. While we’re already seeing some cybercrime groups rely on AI to power CaaS offerings, we expect this trend to flourish.
We anticipate that attackers will use the automated output from LLMs to power CaaS offerings and grow the market, such as taking social media reconnaissance and automating that intelligence into neatly packaged phishing kits.
PLAYBOOKS GROW TO INCLUDE REAL-LIFE THREATS
Cybercriminals continually advance their playbooks, with attacks becoming more aggressive and destructive. We predict that adversaries will expand their playbooks to combine cyberattacks with physical, real-life threats. We’re already seeing some cybercrime groups physically threaten an organization’s
executives and employees in some instances and anticipate that this will become a regular part of many playbooks.
We also anticipate that transnational crime—such as drug trafficking, smuggling people or goods, and more— will become a regular component of more sophisticated playbooks, with cybercrime groups and transnational crime organizations working together.
ANTI-ADVERSARY FRAMEWORKS WILL EXPAND
As attackers continually evolve their strategies, the cybersecurity community at large can do the same in response. Pursuing global collaborations, creating public-private partnerships, and developing frameworks to combat threats are all vital to enhancing our collective resilience.
Many related efforts—like the World Economic Forum Cybercrime Atlas initiative, of which Fortinet is a founding member—are already underway, and we anticipate that more collaborative initiatives will emerge to meaningfully disrupt cybercrime.
ENHANCING COLLECTIVE RESILIENCE AGAINST AN EVOLVING THREAT LANDSCAPE
Cybercriminals will always find new ways to infiltrate organizations. Yet there are numerous opportunities for the cybersecurity community to collaborate to better anticipate adversaries’ next moves and interrupt their activities in a meaningful way.
The value of industry-wide efforts and public-private partnerships cannot be overstated, and we anticipate that the number of organizations participating in these collaborations will grow in the coming years. Additionally, organizations must remember that cybersecurity is everyone’s job, not just the responsibility of the security and IT teams. Implementing enterprisewide security awareness and training, for example, is a vital component of managing risk.
And finally, other entities have a responsibility to promote and adhere to robust cybersecurity practices, ranging from governments to the vendors that manufacture the security products we rely on.
No single organization or security team can disrupt cybercrime alone. By working together and sharing intelligence across the industry, we’re collectively better positioned to fight back against adversaries and effectively protect society at large.

THE FOUNDATION OF TRUE DATA FREEDOM

With businesses managing increasingly complex data ecosystems, maintaining data integrity when moving data has never been more critical.
However, ensuring data integrity has become more challenging, leaving organisations at risk of data loss and corruption.
For businesses to truly embrace data freedom, they must not only be able to move data, but also ensure that data remains accurate, complete and reliable during every migration.
THE IMPACT OF DATA MIGRATION ON DATA INTEGRITY
The movement of data poses one of the most significant risks to data integrity, with the lack of pre-migration testing as the main cause of issues such as data corruption and data loss. This can cause unexpected downtime, reputational damage and loss of important information.
The recent global Crowdstrike incident is an example of how one fault can result in a significant impact across
the business and its stakeholders. It sends a clear message – testing before implementation is essential. This enables organisations to identify potential issues and implement corrective measures.
THE ROLE OF AWARENESS AND PREPARATION IN DATA INTEGRITY
Data integrity begins with awareness. Many organisations do not fully understand what data they have, when it was added or what was updated over time, making it challenging to conduct
data audits or integrity checks. Building awareness of data assets is the first step towards validating data and detecting abnormalities based on historical analyses.
Then, rigorous and ongoing testing for migration is crucial. This includes testing for both functionality and economics. Functionality refers to how well the system operates after migration, ensuring that it continues to meet expectations; economics refers to the cost-effectiveness of the system or application, which is particularly important with cloud-based migrations.
Economics testing involves examining resource consumption, service costs and overall scalability to ascertain whether the solution is economically sustainable for the business.
Tools such as Veeam’s Health Check can also be leveraged to conduct regular automated data integrity audits. These health checks help detect any inconsistencies across backup files, allowing businesses to rectify and ensure data recoverability.
Organisations must liken preparing for migration to how pilots train to resolve the unexpected. By planning for the potential problems businesses may encounter during the transfer of data across systems and platforms, the risk and impact of compromised data can be minimised.
Most importantly, companies should prepare for migrations even if they don’t anticipate immediate changes. Just as pilots do not wait for poor flying conditions to train for an emergency landing or response, businesses also should not wait to be notified of imminent change to initiate data checks and testing. The volatile and fast-paced technological environment means we need to always be prepared to avoid being caught off-guard.
DATA INTEGRITY AND SECURE BACKUPS ENABLE DATA FREEDOM
Finally, a robust data backup and recovery plan forms the last line of defence. Veeam’s 2024 Ransomware Trends Report found that 65 per cent of organisations did not have a recovery
plan for a site-level crisis, and only 50 per cent had immutable backups. This significantly impairs a business’s ability to restore corrupted or lost data efficiently.
Fortunately, there are simple steps that companies can take to safeguard their data and enhance data resilience. By following the 3-2-1-1-0 rule, which recommends storing three copies of data across at least two different media types, with one copy offsite, one copy air-gapped, and with zero errors, businesses can significantly boost their data resilience.
Data freedom is not just about having the ability to move data, it is about ensuring data remains accurate, secure, and usable during migrations or platform changes. Regular testing and data assessments help maintain both integrity and freedom, ensuring
businesses can rely on their data when it matters most.
Lastly, a solid backup and recovery plan provides companies with peace of mind and a safety net, ensuring they can bounce back and forward efficiently if anything does go wrong.
For example, Anheuser-Busch Employees’ Credit Union was able to migrate its 130 virtual machines to a new building with complete peace of mind, thanks to Veeam’s support in rigorous pre-migration and disaster recovery testing.
In the unlikely event that something failed during migration, they knew it could be restored completely and efficiently, minimising any downtime and disruption to business operations.

Even after five visits to this vibrant city, I feel there is still a lot more to see and experience in terms of wellness, food, activities and adventure. As a gateway to the island’s stunning landscapes, Colombo is often overlooked, but it offers an exciting array of attractions and experiences that captivate travelers from around the world. Whether you’re drawn to its colonial charm, serene temples, bustling markets, or scenic coastline, Colombo has something for everyone.
I suggest starting your journey in the heart of Colombo at the Old Dutch Hospital, one of the city’s oldest buildings dating back to the Dutch colonial period. Now transformed into a lively shopping and dining precinct, it’s the perfect place to enjoy a mix of history and contemporary leisure. Nearby, the Galle Face Green, a sprawling oceanfront promenade, is ideal for sunset strolls or savoring local street food like kottu roti or isso wade (prawn fritters).
For a deeper dive into the city’s colonial past, visit the National Museum of Colombo, housed in a grand colonial-era building. This museum showcases a rich collection of artifacts, including ancient sculptures, royal regalia, and traditional masks, offering a glimpse into Sri Lanka’s fascinating history.
Colombo is home to a diverse cultural and religious heritage. The Gangaramaya Temple, a serene Buddhist temple near Beira Lake, is one of the city’s most iconic landmarks. With its eclectic mix of traditional and modern architecture, it’s not only a place of worship but also a treasure trove of relics and artifacts.
Another must-visit is the Seema Malaka Temple, located on Beira Lake itself. Designed by the renowned architect Geoffrey Bawa, this floating temple offers a tranquil retreat in the heart of the city.
The Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque, also known as the Red Mosque, is another striking landmark. With its candy-striped red and white façade, this mosque is a testament to Colombo’s rich Islamic heritage and a favorite for photographers.
For those who love shopping, Colombo’s markets and malls are a paradise. The Pettah Market, one of the city’s most vibrant areas, is a sensory overload of colors, sounds, and aromas. From fresh produce to clothing and jewelry, it’s a great place to pick up unique souvenirs.
If you prefer a more modern shopping experience, head to Crescat Boulevard or Colombo City Centre, where you’ll find international brands, local boutiques, and stylish cafes. I stayed a few times at the Shangri La Colombo, so my favourite
shopping destination is the One Galle Face Mall adjacent to the hotel. Colombo’s coastal charm is undeniable, with its stunning Indian Ocean views and relaxed vibe.
A visit to Mount Lavinia beach Hotel, just a short drive from the city center, is a must for beach lovers. It’s a great spot for a leisurely day by the sea, complete with fresh seafood and waterside dining. I stayed at the Mount Lavinia Hotel during my very first visit to the city and it was the perfect place to fall in love with the local fresh food and culture. The evening cultural performances during my stay made the my time there fun and entertaining.
For nature enthusiasts, the Viharamahadevi Park, Colombo’s largest park, offers a green oasis amidst the urban landscape. The park is perfect for a leisurely stroll, a picnic, or simply relaxing under the shade of its towering trees.
No trip to Colombo is complete without indulging in its culinary scene. From bustling
street food stalls to fine-dining restaurants, the city offers a tantalizing array of flavors. Don’t miss local specialties like hoppers, and Sri Lankan curries. For a luxurious dining experience, visit the Ministry of Crab, a worldrenowned seafood restaurant serving some of the best crab dishes in Asia.
Colombo is more than just a transit hub—it’s a dynamic city that seamlessly blends the old with the new, offering an array of experiences for travelers.

In today’s world of constant hustle, wellness often takes a back seat. My recent trip to Siddhalepa Ayurveda in Sri Lanka, however, offered a truly rejuvenating escape. Flying from Dubai with Sri Lankan Airlines, I embarked on a wellness journey that surpassed the typical holiday experience, immersing me in the healing traditions of Ayurveda.

For deeper detoxification, I experienced oil therapies, where warm medicated oils were gently poured over specific areas of the body, focusing on deeply rooted stress points. The oil therapies, paired with herbal compresses, helped alleviate joint stiffness and provided a sense of tranquility that lingered long after each session.

I met with Amjad years ago when he first started his journey and his designs have since evolved to reflect his aim for perfection and beauty.
Celebrated for his ability to blend artistry with the essence of time, Al Hajj’s creations transcend functionality to become monumental sculptures and exquisite wall art. Drawing inspiration from philosophical musings on nature, cosmology, and the fleeting beauty of moments, his works are crafted from minimalistic yet striking materials like concrete and steel, reflecting a raw and contemporary aesthetic.

The new site covers an impressive 17,000 square meters and is primed to cater to the increasing MRO demands for
narrowbody aircraft such as the Boeing 737 and Airbus A320 families.
The grand opening ceremony was a focal point for aviation industry leaders, government officials, and representatives from FL Technics’ parent company, Avia Solutions Group, celebrating this pivotal development. “This facility embodies our dedication to supporting the aviation industry in Asia and Australia, enhancing
airline safety and operational efficiency across the region,” commented Zilvinas Lapinskas, CEO of the FL Technics Group. The facility features three hangars and is a significant stride forward for regional aviation, promising new opportunities for business and community growth throughout Asia, Australia, and beyond.
Designed to accommodate both classic and next-generation aircraft
models, the new six-bay maintenance hub is fully equipped with advanced production shops and office spaces. This development is set to generate over 500 local jobs, reflecting FL Technics Indonesia's commitment to the regional economy.
The facility operates under the stringent Part-145 AMO certification from the Indonesian Directorate General of Civil Aviation and is on track to receive
additional certifications from CASA, FAA, and EASA shortly.

In the intricate link of public relations and media interactions, the line between professional networking and preferential treatment can often blur, raising questions about the ethics and effectiveness of PR strategies. It's a given that relationships matter in media relations; however, when PR professionals prioritize personal friendships over strategic relevance, it can compromise the integrity of both the media and the represented brand.
As the media landscape evolves, it becomes increasingly crucial for brands to ensure their PR strategies are not only ethical but also strategically sound. When we set up MEPRA in the Middle East, we were just a handful of PR professionals and this was something we spoke about then when writing down the PR code of ethics – being on the media side now and seeing the different prejudices that exist firsthand, setting standards are important more than ever today.
THE IMPORTANCE OF STRATEGIC MEDIA RELATIONSHIPS
PR agencies play a pivotal role in shaping public perception by connecting brands with the media. The foundation of this relationship is built on mutual benefit: media outlets receive timely, relevant content for their audiences, while brands gain exposure. However, when PR professionals lean heavily on their personal friendships even if they are not relevant to the industry rather than focusing on relevance and strategic alignment, they risk diminishing the value of the brands they represent. This approach can lead to coverage that, while positive, may not reach the
intended target audience or achieve the brand’s strategic goals.
MONITORING MEDIA KNOWLEDGE AND RELEVANCE
For brands, the key to leveraging effective media relations lies in monitoring and evaluating the media knowledge and the strategic alignment of their PR agencies. Brands should consider the following approaches:
1. REGULAR REVIEWS OF MEDIA OUTLETS AND COVERAGE
Brands should require regular reports on where their news is being placed and compare that with the target audience and media outlets that align with their market and strategic goals. This ensures that PR efforts are not just about gaining any coverage but the right coverage. This extends to know the passion of the journalist who is writing about their brand and their qualification, history and authenticity.
2. ESTABLISHING CLEAR KPIS
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) such as reach, engagement, and conversion rates can provide quantitative data on the effectiveness of various media placements. Brands should work with PR agencies to establish and review these KPIs regularly to ensure that media relations efforts align with broader marketing goals.
3. EDUCATING PR TEAMS ABOUT BRAND GOALS
It’s essential for brands to ensure that their PR representatives fully understand the short and long-term goals of the company. Regular training sessions
and workshops can help keep everyone aligned with the brand’s vision and strategy.
4. ETHICS AND COMPLIANCE TRAINING
Incorporating ethics training and clear compliance guidelines can help mitigate the risk of PR professionals relying too heavily on personal media relationships. This training should emphasize the importance of balancing personal relationships with professional responsibilities.
5. THIRD-PARTY AUDITS
Sometimes, an external review by a third-party can provide an unbiased assessment of a PR agency’s performance and strategy alignment. These audits can help reaffirm the agency's alignment with the brand’s objectives or highlight areas for improvement. I often get calls from brands asking about my experience with the different PR agencies and for suggestions on which agencies I feel best represent their brand.

In the complex world of public relations, the emphasis should always be on creating value through strategic and ethically sound media relationships. Brands have a crucial role in setting the tone and expectations for their PR agencies.
