DESIGNING WITH PURPOSE

Boubker Benjelloun on Crafting Icons and Empowering Communities

When GTM explored the idea of featuring Boubker Benjelloun in the magazine, it quickly became clear we were going to meet a visionary who sees architecture as far more than a skyline-defining pursuit. Known for shaping landmark projects like Como Tower, Solara Tower, and the record-breaking Meta Stadium, Boubker has redefined what it means to create with purpose. Yet beyond the shimmering glass facades and bold geometries lies a deeper mission: building communities and transforming lives through

The B. Foundation, his humanitarian platform active across Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. In this conversation, we explore how Benjelloun is weaving social impact into luxury real estate, and why he believes that great design should always serve a higher calling.

WITH BENJELLOUN & PARTNERS, YOU HAVE HELPED SHAPE ICONIC SKYLINES ACROSS DUBAI AND BEYOND. WHAT DRIVES YOUR CREATIVE VISION WHEN CONCEPTUALIZING SUCH MONUMENTAL STRUCTURES?

For me, architecture is never just about height or form. It is about meaning. I am drawn to ideas that evoke emotion and create a sense of place. That’s the starting point for everything I design.

With COMO Residences, we took inspiration from nature - the curves of the sea, the openness of the sky, the movement of wind. Each level is distinct, creating a dynamic vertical form that evolves as it rises. The vertical greenery, which earned it the nickname Waterfall of the Greens, reflects our belief that buildings should not just exist in a city, but grow with it. It's a building that offers privacy, panoramic views, and a connection to the natural world — all in one.

Solara Tower came from a very different energy. In the heart of the city, we wanted to create stillness. The design blends soft textures and muted tones with open layouts

and indoor greenery, bringing Zen-like calm to urban living. We rethought the typical highrise layout by starting with smaller units and expanding upward — so the sense of space grows with the building itself.

Then there’s Meta Stadium, which looks to the future. Its elevated circular form represents strength, possibility, and progress. The vibrant bands that wrap around the façade express creativity and unity, while the lighting gives the building a presence that constantly shifts. From sustainable materials to inclusive design features, the stadium reflects Dubai’s forward-thinking spirit — bold, diverse, and optimistic. In all these projects, the goal is the

same: to design spaces that don’t just serve a function, but stir something deeper.

HOW DO YOU BALANCE LUXURY AND FUNCTIONALITY IN YOUR DESIGNS, PARTICULARLY IN PROJECTS LIKE SOLARA TOWER, WHERE AESTHETICS MUST MEET THE DEMANDS OF MODERN URBAN LIVING?

For us, luxury isn’t about excess. It is about intentional design that supports how people actually live. In Solara Tower, we focused on creating a calm, elegant environment within the energy of the city. Natural materials, open layouts, and integrated greenery all contribute to a sense of serenity, while still delivering high performance in terms of space, flow, and light. That balance between visual simplicity and functional depth is what earned Solara the Innovation in Architecture Award. It proves that true luxury lies in thoughtful design - where form, feeling, and livability come together seamlessly.

THROUGH THE B. FOUNDATION, YOU HAVE LAUNCHED IMPACTFUL PROJECTS ACROSS AFRICA, ASIA, AND THE MIDDLE EAST. WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO EMBED HUMANITARIAN WORK INTO YOUR ARCHITECTURAL JOURNEY?

The B. Foundation was never a side project. It is a core part of how I define impact. Transforming lives is not an act of charity but a commitment to humanity. From the very beginning, I believed that the discipline and creativity we bring to architecture could be applied to much deeper challenges.

The foundation was created to channel that same thinking toward communities that are often overlooked — places that don’t need temporary aid, but long-term, sustainable solutions. Rooted in the principles of equity, sustainability, and empowerment, the foundation focuses on creating meaningful change through innovative and communitydriven projects, particularly across Africa and other parts of Asia.

One of our earliest projects involved rebuilding a rural village from the ground up, implementing clean water systems, education infrastructure, safe housing, and agricultural support. That experience shaped our approach: listen first, build responsibly, and create systems that support dignity and self-reliance. This work is not separate from architecture but an extension of it. We are still building. We are still designing. But instead of glass towers, we are creating foundations for a better future.

CAN YOU SHARE A SPECIFIC PROJECT LED BY THE B. FOUNDATION THAT YOU FEEL BEST REPRESENTS YOUR MISSION

TO BUILD NOT JUST STRUCTURES, BUT COMMUNITIES?

One of the meaningful projects we have led was in Ethiopia, where we developed self-sufficient schools that go far beyond traditional education. These schools integrate agricultural and vocational training into the curriculum — teaching children practical life skills while also supporting the broader community.

The idea wasn’t just to build classrooms, but to create a sustainable ecosystem — where students learn, families benefit, and the entire village becomes more resilient over time. Alongside this, we launched reforestation efforts to combat soil erosion and improve environmental conditions, as well as food distribution programs to serve remote and underserved areas like Mond. This project reflects the foundation’s mission to design with purpose, empower communities, and create long-term systems that people can

sustain on their own. It is about building more than structures — it’s about shaping lives.

IN AN AGE WHERE ARCHITECTURE IS OFTEN COMMODIFIED, HOW DO YOU ENSURE YOUR WORK REMAINS ROOTED IN CULTURAL AUTHENTICITY AND SOCIAL PURPOSE?

By starting with listening. Every place has its own story, and I believe architecture should reflect that, not erase it. Whether it’s a tower in Dubai or a rural community project, we design with sensitivity to context, culture, and the people who will experience it.

We also focus on purpose. What impact will this space have? Who does it serve? Asking those questions keeps our work grounded — not just in design, but in meaning. In a fastmoving industry, we choose depth over speed. That is what makes the work lasting.

DUBAI IS A CITY KNOWN FOR PUSHING ARCHITECTURAL BOUNDARIES. IN WHAT WAYS HAVE THE CITY’S ENERGY AND AMBITION INFLUENCED YOUR APPROACH TO DESIGN AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT?

Dubai’s pace and ambition encourage bold thinking. It is a place where new ideas are not only welcomed, but expected. That kind of environment gave me the freedom to pursue projects like COMO Residences and Solara Tower, where innovation, scale, and expressive design are embraced. At the same time, the city’s diversity and rapid growth have made me more conscious of the responsibility we carry as designers.

We are not just shaping skylines — we are shaping how people live, connect, and experience the city. That is why community and context are always at the heart of what we build. Dubai has taught me that innovation

and responsibility must go hand in hand and that great design should serve both ambition and humanity.

SUSTAINABILITY IS A GROWING CONVERSATION IN ARCHITECTURE. HOW DO YOUR PROJECTS REFLECT ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY— BOTH IN LUXURY BUILDS AND YOUR FOUNDATION’S INITIATIVES?

For us, sustainability isn’t an afterthought — it’s considered from the earliest stages of design. In COMO Residences, for example, we integrated vertical greenery not only as a visual statement, but as a way to soften the urban environment and promote a stronger connection to nature. It reflects our belief that even high-end developments should contribute positively to their surroundings.

Through The B. Foundation, sustainability means working with local materials, empowering local communities, and building systems that are designed to last. Whether it’s reforestation efforts, agricultural support, or self-sufficient schools, our focus is always on creating long-term environmental and social resilience.

LOOKING AHEAD, WHAT LEGACY DO YOU HOPE TO LEAVE THROUGH BOTH YOUR ARCHITECTURAL ACHIEVEMENTS AND YOUR PHILANTHROPIC EFFORTS WITH THE B. FOUNDATION?

I would like my legacy to reflect a simple idea: that design, when guided by conscience, can create real, lasting change. The work we do through The B. Foundation is grounded in that belief. We focus on practical solutions — building schools that teach life skills, planting trees that restore land, creating infrastructure that supports independence. It’s not about large gestures, but quiet, sustained efforts that allow communities to stand on their own.

This philosophy mirrors the essence of Architecture for Humanity, using architecture not as a symbol of status, but as a tool for progress. I don’t separate design from purpose; to me, they are one and the same. If the work I have done helps shift that conversation — from architecture as product to architecture as service, then that’s the legacy I would be proud to leave behind.

DRIVING CULTURE, EMPOWERING PEOPLE

Hyundai’s Hae In Kim On Building A Global

Workforce For The Future

In the heart of Korea’s automotive powerhouse, I sat down with my fellow jury from the Women’s World Car of the Year to interview Hae In Kim, Executive Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer of Hyundai Motor Company. With more than 130,000 employees under her guidance, Kim is not only steering the HR strategy of one of the world’s most influential automakers, but also reshaping what it means to lead with purpose, inclusion, and global vision. In our conversation, Kim shared her insights on Hyundai’s cultural transformation, the empowerment of women in mobility, and her aspirations to leave behind a legacy of a more integrated, agile, and globally united Hyundai.

When Hae In Kim joined Hyundai Motor Company in early 2024, she stepped into a role that impacts the professional lives of over 130,000 people globally. As Executive Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer, Kim’s mandate stretches far beyond traditional HR boundaries as she is tasked with transforming Hyundai’s workplace culture, amplifying inclusivity, and aligning talent strategy with the company’s bold 2030 vision.

“It’s not just about having a strategy but about how people work together to deliver it,” Kim says. At the core of this transformation is what Hyundai calls “The Hyundai Way,” a unified cultural framework born out of global employee feedback. Through surveys, focus groups, and leadership interviews, Kim and her team distilled a renewed behavioral philosophy to guide the company’s evolution. “We didn’t want it to be a slogan on a wall. We wanted it to be a living, breathing part of how we operate every day,” she explains.

One of Kim’s first priorities was ensuring that this cultural movement was not limited to headquarters. “We realized that we needed a common global language,” she says. The solution was a network of internal culture change agents, embedded within regional teams and tasked with spreading and sustaining the Hyundai Way across all business units. From executive leadership to factory floors, every level is involved in fostering a more collaborative and globally minded organization.

As the auto industry undergoes seismic shifts, electrification, smart mobility, and sustainability, Kim is reimagining talent development to meet future demands. She introduces the idea of “purple people” those who can bridge the gap between hardware and software thinking. “Whether you are in quality control

Our people strategy must reflect the same innovation we bring to our vehicles. We don’t want it to be a slogan on a wall - we want it to be a living, breathing part of how we operate every day.
- Hae In Kim, EVP & CHRO, Hyundai Motor Company

or design, cross-functional fluency is essential.”

For Hyundai’s women employees, this transformation is particularly empowering. While automotive has traditionally been male-dominated, Kim sees diversity and inclusion (D&I) through the lens of long-term sustainability. “We focus on inclusion first. You can hire for diversity, but without an inclusive culture, you miss out on the benefits,” she notes. Under her leadership, Hyundai has introduced mentorship programs, allyship initiatives, and flexible policies that support women balancing career and caregiving responsibilities. Kim was also instrumental in Hyundai’s first-ever public D&I goals, now embedded in the company’s sustainability roadmap. “We have declared our targets, and now we are working closely with our regional heads to measure progress,” she says.

In fact, her upcoming meetings with regional teams include reviewing representation in areas like the Middle East, where cultural dynamics are rapidly evolving, particularly around female drivers and women in customer-facing roles. “We are benchmarking against the best in the region to raise the bar,” she adds.

On the subject of Hyundai’s car development process, Kim was visibly proud when discussing the Women’s World Car of the Year award for the new Santa Fe. “Our teams always design with a diverse customer in mind, and safety is always the top priority,” she says. From product meetings to design reviews, the needs of women drivers are part of the conversation, down to thoughtful details like well-lit vanity mirrors in the Genesis range for added comfort. “It’s

about customer-centricity and it is our competitive edge,” she says.

Despite being a mid-career recruit, a woman, and having spent many years abroad, Kim never felt like an outsider at Hyundai. “I was struck by how welcoming the team was,” she reflects. “It is part of the company’s DNA to learn, to adapt, and to value different perspectives.”

Looking ahead, her personal goal is clear: “I want to leave behind a Hyundai that feels like one global team. Not just competitive in the market, but an organization where talent thrives and where our people are sought-after by the world.” And to young women aspiring to leadership roles? Her advice is balanced and wise: “Have confidence in yourself, but also be honest about where you need to grow.”

With humility, vision, and fierce clarity, Hae In Kim is not just helping Hyundai build better cars – she is helping it build a better company.

MULTICULTURAL MANNERS IN HOSPITALITY

HAKAN OZEL

Vice President Operations & General Manager, Shangri-La Dubai

I must share this: one of the most valuable experiences that I gained over my decades of luxury hotel business life, hence feel exceptionally fortunate, is learning and practicing multicultural manners.

In today’s increasingly interconnected world, interaction with people from different cultures is not only just usual, but also inevitable. Whether in the workplace, during travel, or upon social engagement with people, our lives are shaped by the rich variety of global cultures. Knowing how to navigate the differences of multicultural manners is therefore essential. Understanding and respecting the customs, values, and etiquette of various cultures fosters harmonious relationships, minimizes or eliminates misunderstandings, and enriches our collective experience.

THE IMPORTANCE OF MULTICULTURAL MANNERS

Manners are more than simple rules of politeness; they are the outward expression of a culture’s values and beliefs. When we interact across cultures, our own behaviors, what we say, how we say it, and how we physically express ourselves, can be interpreted very differently. What is considered respectful in one culture may be seen as rude or inappropriate in another. As such, cultivating cultural awareness and adaptability is a valuable skill.

In professional environments like luxury hotel business, multicultural manners facilitate effective collaboration, teamworking, negotiation, and problemsolving. They help to build trust and rapport, both of which are essential for success in international business. In personal relationships, they demonstrate empathy and openness, building bridges across perceived divides.

GENERAL PRINCIPLES OF MULTICULTURAL ETIQUETTE

While each culture has its own set of social rules, there are some universal principles that can guide respectful interaction and guide us to meaningful relationships. When we are open-minded and welcoming, we can approach every new culture with curiosity rather than judgment. We then realize that differences are not deficits, but enrichment. When we are observant in unfamiliar situations, it would be wise to observe, particularly how locals behave, how they greet one another and what topics they discuss or avoid. Politeness is always a key to respect in return. When unsure, it is acceptable to ask, with humility, about local customs. Most people appreciate the effort to learn. If we are adaptable, we have a willingness to adjust our own behavior to fit the expectations of the host culture, especially when we are a

guest. And finally, above all, we show respect for the people, their beliefs, and their traditions, even if they differ from our own.

SOME EXAMPLES OF MULTICULTURAL MANNERS

GREETINGS AND COMMUNICATION:

One of the most obvious areas where cultures differ is in greetings. For example, a firm handshake is a sign of confidence in many Western cultures. In contrast, a gentle handshake is preferred in some Asian countries, while in some countries, bowing is common and conveys respect. In parts of the Middle East, greetings may involve a kiss on the cheek or a warm embrace, but these gestures may not be appropriate between opposite genders. Language and communication styles also vary. Some cultures value indirect communication and may avoid saying "no" outright in order to maintain harmony. In contrast, in some countries, people appreciate directness and clarity with straight answers. Nonverbal cues, such as eye contact, gestures, and

personal space can also have different meanings. For instance, maintaining eye contact is considered confident and honest in some countries whereas it may be seen as challenging or disrespectful in some Asian or African cultures.

DINING ETIQUETTE:

Sharing food is a universal way to build relationships, yet dining customs are incredibly diverse. In India and the Middle East, eating with the right hand is customary, as the left hand is considered inappropriate. Meanwhile, in Western cultures, both hands are used with knife and fork. In some countries, it is polite to lift a bowl of rice to your mouth and eat with chopsticks, however, sticking chopsticks upright in rice is taboo, as it resembles a funeral ritual. Table manners also differ. In some countries, keeping hands on the table but not elbows is expected, while in some others, hands are generally kept on the lap between courses. Being aware of these differences helps avoid awkwardness and shows appreciation for the host.

GIFT-GIVING CUSTOMS:

The act of giving gifts is burdened with

cultural significance. In some countries, gifts are often wrapped elaborately, and there is a ritual to both giving and receiving them. In those cultures, gifts are presented with both hands, and it is polite to refuse a gift a couple of times before accepting. In some cultures, gifts should not be too extravagant, and it is important to avoid gifts that might carry inappropriate implications. In some Western countries, gifts are usually opened immediately; in others, they may be set aside to be opened later, as opening in front of the giver can be seen as impolite.

DRESS CODES AND MODESTY:

Appropriate dress is another area where multicultural manners come into play. What is considered casual or formal in one country may be quite different elsewhere. In many parts of the Middle East and South Asia, modest attire is important, particularly in religious or formal settings. This may mean covering the arms, legs, or head. In most Western countries, dress codes tend to be more relaxed, but even so, there are settings where business or formal attire is expected. Understanding local dress norms is a sign of respect.

CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES

It is easy to make mistakes in cross-cultural situations, and misunderstandings will occur. However, most people are forgiving if they see a genuine effort to be respectful. Apologizing when a misstep is made, and expressing a willingness to learn, often turns an awkward moment into an opportunity for connection. In fact, sharing stories about differences in customs can stimulate lively conversation and deepen relationships.

THE VALUE OF MULTICULTURAL MANNERS

In embracing multicultural manners, we do more than just avoid offense but open ourselves to the richness of human diversity. We learn new perspectives, expand our worldview, and develop empathy for others’ experiences. Practicing good manners across cultures reflects not only respect for others but also a respect for the complexity and beauty of the world we share. We become tolerant, which is the key of harmonious living. As the world becomes more interconnected, navigating cultural differences with grace and understanding becomes not just a personal asset, but a collective responsibility. By practicing multicultural manners, we contribute to a more harmonious, inclusive, and understanding global community.

DRIVING MEANING, NOT JUST MACHINES

How Volkswagen Middle East Is Building Cultural Connections on the Road

In today’s dynamic automotive landscape, brands must go far beyond engineering excellence to capture the hearts of consumers — they must connect on a cultural level. At the forefront of this shift is Virginie Ludmer, Marketing Director of Volkswagen Middle East, who is steering the iconic German marque into a new era of emotional resonance across the region.

From campaigns like Reflections En Route, which reframe journeys through personal perspective, to bold creative expressions such as the GTI Art Project, Volkswagen Middle East is redefining how global values are adapted locally — with impact, authenticity, and flair. In this exclusive conversation with Global Trend Monitor, Virginie shares how the brand translates its heritage into storytelling that speaks

to the Middle Eastern consumer, building loyalty through relevance.

VOLKSWAGEN IS A GLOBALLY RECOGNISED BRAND. HOW DO YOU APPROACH TAILORING THAT IDENTITY TO RESONATE WITH AUDIENCES IN THE MIDDLE EAST?

At Volkswagen, our global identity is anchored in reliability, innovation and timeless design, qualities that have earned the brand trust across generations. But in the Middle East, we know that true connection goes deeper it’s not just about translation, it’s about cultural relevance. We immerse ourselves in the region’s values, the centrality of family, the spirit

of hospitality, a deep respect for heritage, and a bold sense of aspiration.

This understanding informs everything we do, from the way we craft our stories and visuals to the experiences we deliver and the partnerships we nurture. Our aim is not simply to exist in the region, but to become part of its cultural fabric, making Volkswagen feel proudly at home in the Middle East.

LET’S TALK ABOUT REFLECTIONS EN ROUTE. WHAT INSPIRED THIS CAMPAIGN AND HOW DOES IT REFLECT THE BRAND’S EVOLVING NARRATIVE IN THIS REGION?

Reflections En Route was born from a universal truth: journeys transform us. But in the Middle East, where every drive can unlock stories of self-discovery, deeprooted family bonds and awe-inspiring landscapes, that truth takes on even greater depth. This campaign set out to honour that reality by shifting the lens from brand-led narratives to human-led stories.

Through the eyes of real people navigating the roads of the region, we captured moments that were raw, personal and emotionally resonant. It signalled a new chapter in our storytelling approach, one that places authenticity, cultural nuance and empathy at the forefront and reflects the richness of life as it is truly lived here.

THE GTI ART PROJECT WAS A STRIKING BLEND OF CREATIVITY AND CULTURE. WHAT ROLE DO SUCH ARTISTIC COLLABORATIONS PLAY IN VOLKSWAGEN’S MARKETING STRATEGY?

Artistic collaborations such as the GTI Art Project enable us to engage with culture in a meaningful and authentic way. The GTI is a global icon but reimagining it through a local artistic lens gave it renewed life and deeper relevance in the Middle East. These partnerships go beyond aesthetics; they are about storytelling, identity, and cultural expression. They allow us to build genuine connections with younger, creatively driven audiences while championing the region’s growing creative economy. Through initiatives like this, we not only enhance the brand’s cultural presence but also create a platform for regional talent to thrive.

WHAT DO YOU BELIEVE ARE THE ELEMENTS OF A TRULY ‘CULTURALLY RELEVANT’ CAMPAIGN? CAN YOU SHARE A MOMENT WHERE LOCAL FEEDBACK RESHAPED YOUR APPROACH?

A culturally relevant campaign is grounded in genuine insight, not assumption. It speaks the local language not only in words, but in emotion. This means aligning storytelling with cultural moments, traditions, and social values that matter. One example that stands out is when we received early feedback on campaign visuals that did not fully reflect regional expectations around modesty.

Thanks to that valuable input from our partners, we were able to adapt swiftly and produce content that was both impactful

and culturally appropriate. Another strong example is our localisation of the global #NotWomensFootball campaign. Originally created to celebrate the skill, passion and professionalism of female footballers during UEFA Women’s EURO 2022, we reinterpreted the campaign with cultural awareness while preserving its empowering spirit. The outcome was a bold yet respectful narrative that championed inclusivity in sport and felt authentic to our audience in the region. It is a reminder that global stories resonate most when adapted with intention, care, and local understanding.

HOW DO YOU COMMUNICATE VALUES ON SUSTAINABILITY AND INNOVATION TO A REGIONAL AUDIENCE IN WAYS THAT INSPIRE ACTION?

We know that to inspire action, we must first make innovation feel accessible and relevant. Our communications focus on how technology, whether it’s electric mobility, advanced safety features, or connected infotainment, can enhance everyday life. On sustainability, we frame our efforts in the context of the region’s own ambitions, such as the UAE’s Net

Zero 2050 strategy as well as Saudi Arabia’s SGI 2030 strategy. By aligning with these wider goals and showcasing our innovations in action, we turn abstract concepts into tangible benefits for our consumers.

LOOKING AHEAD, WHAT NEW DIRECTIONS CAN WE EXPECT IN TERMS OF REGIONAL BRAND ENGAGEMENT? ARE THERE ANY UPCOMING PROJECTS OR CAMPAIGNS YOU’RE PARTICULARLY EXCITED ABOUT?

We’re entering a new phase where digital innovation meets cultural expression. You’ll see Volkswagen leaning more into immersive, experiential marketing, blending digital and on-ground touchpoints to tell richer, more interactive stories.

We’re also continuing to deepen our collaboration with regional creators to ensure our content feels more rooted in local culture. Upcoming projects will reflect this shift, through storytellingled campaigns, meaningful partnerships, and creative formats that celebrate the identity and energy of the Middle East.

INSIDE HYUNDAI MOTOR’S ULSAN PLANT A Glimpse into the World’s Largest Single Automotive Manufacturing Hub

Tucked along South Korea’s southeastern coast lies the city of Ulsan, home to an industrial marvel that has long shaped the country’s automotive dominance. As part of our WWCOTY delegation’s visit to Korea, we had the rare opportunity to tour Hyundai’s vast Ulsan manufacturing complex which is the largest single automobile plant in the world. And while the figures alone are staggering, what truly impressed was the sheer precision, scale, and harmony with which each component of the operation functions.

Spanning 5 million square meters (approximately 1,200 acres), Hyundai’s Ulsan facility is less a factory and more a self-sustaining automotive city. It houses five independent manufacturing

plants, its own engine, transmission, and seat production lines, and even a private port for global vehicle export. With the ability to produce more than 1.52 million vehicles annually and an average daily output of 6,000 cars, Ulsan sets the gold standard for streamlined automotive production.

As female motoring journalists from across the globe, the WWCOTY jury brings a uniquely global and inclusive lens to every car and every factory we assess. Touring Ulsan underscored Hyundai’s meticulous attention to detail, from the early stages of assembly to the final stages of inspection and how integral this facility is to the brand’s global reputation for quality, efficiency, and innovation.

What struck me most was how seamlessly every stage of production is integrated. The process flows with industrial elegance: raw materials and parts are fed into the system, components are assembled with clockwork precision, and vehicles emerge as finished products ready to take on global roads. Robotics and human craftsmanship coexist effortlessly, reflecting Hyundai’s commitment to both cutting-edge technology and the irreplaceable human touch.

A particular highlight was the tour of Hyundai’s Heritage Hall. This thoughtfully curated space chronicles the company’s rise from its early beginnings at Ulsan to becoming one of the world’s leading automotive manufacturers. It was

a powerful reminder of how far Hyundai has come and how integral this very plant has been to its journey.

What sets Ulsan apart is not just its size but the philosophy behind it. It is a place where innovation meets tradition, where scale never compromises quality, and where the past, present, and future of automotive manufacturing converge under one roof.

The Women’s World Car of the Year jury represents a collective voice that reaches over 500 million consumers worldwide and we often visit production facilities of automotive brands to get behind the scenes insights. From what I witnessed at Ulsan, Hyundai’s commitment to

precision manufacturing, global logistics, and brand heritage is not only world-class — it is inspirational.

The survey, which gathered insights from senior IT decision makers at financial services companies in the UK, France, Germany, and the Netherlands, underscores the ongoing challenges faced by the sector as it adapts to DORA – a framework introduced by the EU in January 2025 to strengthen the financial industry’s defenses against cyberthreats and ICT disruptions.

While DORA has been embedded as a strategic priority across the financial sector, many organizations are still navigating the path to full compliance. The survey found that 94% of organizations surveyed now rank DORA higher in their organizational priorities than they did in the month before the deadline, with 40% calling it a current “top digital resilience priority.” Half of the

respondents said DORA requirements have been integrated into their broader resilience programs, while 39% reported it remains a central focus.

THE UNINTENDED CONSEQUENCES OF DORA

Even with 94% of organizations clear on the steps they need to take; many are facing unforeseen challenges:

• 41% report increased stress and pressure on IT and security teams.

• 37% are dealing with higher costs passed on by ICT vendors.

• 22% believe the volume of digital regulation is becoming a barrier to innovation or competition.

• 20% have yet to secure the necessary budget to meet DORA requirements.

“It’s promising to see that most organizations have embraced and feel confident about meeting DORA’s requirements,” said Edwin Weijdema, Field CTO EMEA at Veeam.

“Achieving compliance is an important first step in ensuring your organization is resilient but given today’s complex threat landscape there’s more to do. New Veeam research shows that many financial institutions still see a gap in their overall resilience and face challenges in securing the necessary budget, even as DORA grows in strategic importance. The journey to operational resilience is ongoing, and it’s clear that prioritizing data resilience remains critical for organizations' long-term success.”

DORA: STILL A WORK IN PROGRESS

Despite this prioritization, many organizations are still working to meet key DORA requirements:

• 24% have not established recovery and continuity testing.

• 24% have not implemented incident reporting.

• 24% have not identified a DORA implementation lead.

• 23% have not conducted digital operational resilience testing.

• 21% have not ensured backup integrity and secure data recovery.

The most challenging DORA requirement? Third-party risk oversight, with 34% of organizations citing it as the hardest to implement – despite only 20% yet to do so. There are many possible reasons for this, from the limited visibility many organizations have into their third-party operations to the sheer scale of third-party networks.

Andre Troskie, Field CISO EMEA at Veeam said, “It’s interesting to see that third-party oversight has emerged as a particular pain point for organizations. Over a third named it the most challenging to implement, and many called for additional guidance on establishing it in the first place.

An often-overlooked facet of data resilience, it’s promising to see that organizations are interrogating their defences to this degree –

which is exactly what it was designed to do. Of course, meeting the requirements is key, but DORA was also about getting organizations to assess their resilience holistically – and in that aspect, it seems to be succeeding.”

Additionally, 22% of organizations felt that DORA’s design could have been improved to aid compliance, with calls for simplification, clarification, and more detailed third-party risk guidance.

SUPPORTING THE JOURNEY TO RESILIENCE

In response to the growing need for structured resilience strategies, Veeam and McKinsey earlier this year introduced the industry's first Data Resilience Maturity Model (DRMM). Built on extensive research and insights from over 500 IT, security, and operations leaders, the Veeam DRMM has been validated through real-world customer outcomes.

This framework enables organizations to assess their data resilience using a crossfunctional approach that integrates IT, security, and compliance into a unified strategy. It provides a clear roadmap for enhancing resilience and achieving compliance with regulations like DORA.

“DORA was about more than compliance – it was about driving a holistic reassessment of digital data resilience,” added Troskie. “And in that respect, it’s working.”

WHY THE FUTURE OF POWER UTILITIES DEPENDS ON ADOPTING AI NOW

Onboarding artificial intelligence can secure the future of world’s critical electric systems through improvements in efficiency, innovation and decision-making. Power companies must adapt to thrive, says Gary Wong, Global Segment Leader of Power, Utilities, and Infrastructure at AVEVA

The future of power and infrastructure hinges on algorithms, not concrete or cables. Companies that master data-driven decisionmaking will build the grids and networks of tomorrow—whether through new projects or by squeezing efficiencies from congested and aging systems.

But catering to the growing global population and the push for decarbonization requires new approaches in infrastructure. Not only do aging systems need to be upgraded, but utilities must become resilient and agile to withstand business uncertainties and freak weather events.

Power grids require $3.1 trillion in investments before 2030, according to research firm Rystad Energy. The lack of investment is showing up in inefficiencies, reliability issues and missed opportunities in integrating renewables. In the US, for example, nearly 2,600GW of total generation and storage capacity—almost entirely zero-carbon— was awaiting connection even before Donald Trump’s inauguration. Across the pond, aging and outdated systems hinders National Grid Energy System Operator battery use in the UK, wasting renewables and increasing reliance on fossil fuels.

Relying on traditional models—manual controls, siloed approaches and static

planning—is no longer sufficient. That’s where algorithms come in.

WHY AI IS INTEGRAL TO TACKLING INFRASTRUCTURAL ISSUES

Power infrastructure is becoming smarter and greener, led by industrial artificial intelligence (AI) applications, and supported by the internet of things (IoT) and cloud computing.

Together, these technologies play a multifaceted role in modern energy management, to take just one infrastructure example.

Using IoT data in the cloud, AI algorithms can predict energy demand with precision and optimize the integration of intermittent renewables such as wind and solar to adjust energy production, reduce waste and improve reliability. In contrast with traditional methods that rely on expansive assumptions and periodic schedules, these innovations deliver measurable improvements for cashstrapped utilities, with real-time feedback loops enabling human operators to optimize decisions and prevent issues before they arise.

On just one front, onboarding digital technologies today could save $1.8 trillion in global grid investment over the next two

decades, according to the International Energy Agency.

How companies are transitioning to AI-driven infrastructure

Duke Energy knows how algorithms can save costs and improve performance. Its singlewindow Monitoring and Diagnostic Center monitors diverse assets from renewable energy to coal and gas facilities across 60 plants in seven US states. Using low-cost sensors and AI algorithms, Duke tracks more than 500,000 data points and runs over 11,000 automated models across its fleet. Its operators now have real-time performance visibility and are alerted to problems before or as they occur. They have saved more than $250 million through predictive interventions so far, with one single early catch avoiding costs of $34 million.

Data-led technologies in the cloud likewise support cross-industry collaboration. Companies can jointly meet market needs by sharing operations information over a digital backbone. The US-based Western Energy Imbalance Market (WEIM) is a wholesale energy trading market that enables participating organizations to buy and sell energy. An advanced digital suite brings together its 22 members within a connected ecosystem, providing access to real-time

information on market performance, business trends, and potential misalignments so that operators can minimalize financial settlement risks. Efficiency and decisionmaking have improved, and each WEIM member additionally benefits from flexibility and scalability, enabling competitiveness in an evolving market.

Elsewhere, innovative grid management is tackling the proliferation of new devices such as EVs, smart meters and solar panels are plugged in. UK Power Networks (UKPN) delivers electricity to 19 million homes in one of the world’s largest population centers. Recognizing the limits of reactive maintenance, it developed a data-intensive platform that processes four billion data points daily.

AI-powered analytics predict failures before they happen, reducing outages and improving efficiency. With a centralized hub and streamlined operations, system operators can focus on network resilience, load balancing and strategic infrastructure decisions.

These are just some of the ways data and AI are proving their worth across key performance indicators such as grid reliability, cost reduction and energy efficiency in ways traditional methods can’t match.

WHY HUMAN INSIGHT IS THE BACKBONE OF AI-ENABLED UTILITIES

But while AI will speed up grid modernization, it can’t do so without humans. Only when experienced professionals program, monitor and fine-tune digital systems in line with business and social goals, can they yield superior outcomes.

AI-generated insights can guide longterm planning and real-time algorithmic adjustments can address immediate challenges, but neither can replace human expertise.

That’s why the majority (75%) of power producers in key global markets will prioritize investments in AI for over the next 12 months, according to the AVEVA Industrial Intelligence Index 2024. Speaking about key target investments with the greatest potential to drive opportunity for their organization, nearly half (43%) of executives look to invest in digital platforms that enable their workforces to share data and collaborate with internal and external partners.

A FIVE-STEP TRANSITION TO AN AI-FIRST POWER UTILITY

AI will be indispensable in driving utilities’ transition. But adopting AI isn’t a single-step

upgrade. Whether in power or other sectors, companies must take a phased approach to go from outdated systems to intelligent, selfoptimizing networks.

1. The first step is building a digital foundation after a comprehensive audit of existing infrastructure and data collection practices, value chain inefficiencies and operational challenges. By assessing where improvements are needed, companies can pinpoint target areas for AI-driven solutions.

2. Next, establish the necessary digital infrastructure for AI. Typically, this is a mix of cloud and edge computing to ensure applications run efficiently and effectively. The cloud delivers scalability, while real-time processing happens at the edge—critical to immediate decisions around predictive maintenance or load balancing.

3. Pilot programs with clear success metrics are crucial to test AI’s effectiveness and minimize risk. Well-defined pilots allow strategic recalibration and can secure buy-in.

4. Next come scaling and refining AI solutions across all aspects of operations, including deploying customer-facing AI tools in line with business goals. Constant finetuning using live operational data is essential to get the most from AI tools.

5. As AI systems mature, the most essential step for long-term success is continuous innovation. This occurs by way of real-time performance monitoring, regular retraining of AI models with new data to improve accuracy and adaptability, periodic comparisons with KPIs and benchmarks, and adjusting goals based on performance insights.

WHY STAKEHOLDER ALIGNMENT HELPS FUTUREPROOF THE POWER SECTOR

The rise of digital-first utilities is only a matter of time. With the AI in energy market growing at a compound annual rate of 36% through to 2030, data-driven technologies will play a seminal role in building secure and decarbonized power and infrastructure systems to support humanity’s future. However, for AI-led digital transformation to be truly effective, it must be guided by clear policy frameworks, strategic partnerships with technology providers and investors and open dialogue with customers.

Algorithms can cement power’s future, but only if all stakeholders are on board. The question is no longer whether the sector will adopt AI; it’s whether it will do so fast enough to remain competitive.

HOW DATA INFRASTRUCTURE IS FUELING DUBAI’S AI REVOLUTION

Cities around the world are reengineering themselves to accommodate artificial intelligence—not just through new technologies, but through a total rethink of how urban systems work together.

A Reuters report projects that by 2025, over 500 cities will be using digital twins to better manage resources, potentially saving $280 billion by 2030 through smarter planning and operations.

Similarly, a Deloitte study adds that at least 250 cities across 78 countries are actively deploying AI, automation and agentic systems to improve everything from traffic flow to healthcare.

As this global momentum builds, one thing is clear: the success of AI in urban environments depends less on the tools themselves and more on the strength of the data infrastructure that supports them.

Dubai is leading this shift and is taking it further.

The city is laying the groundwork: building data highways and secure platforms that allow AI to truly take hold. Artificial intelligence is already embedded in many of Dubai’s everyday systems.

From healthcare and finance to logistics and city planning, AI is helping services become more adaptive and operations more efficient. But what makes this possible happens behind the scenes—how data is stored, organized, protected and routed. Everything must flow smoothly for AI to deliver on its promise.

Dubai’s approach to AI is rooted in long-term thinking. The Dubai AI Roadmap, for instance, sets out to embed AI in key sectors of society. Alongside it, the Dubai Data Strategy is focused on shaping a secure, scalable data environment. These frameworks are building the infrastructure for a city that thrives on intelligent decision-making and citizencentric services.

The outcomes are already visible. Supply chains are getting sharper with real-time logistics. Financial institutions are using predictive tools to make better choices.

Hospitals are finding ways to diagnose faster with help from AI-driven insights. Even traffic patterns are getting a second look, thanks to planners using models to guide city growth and flow.

All these innovations, though varied, lean on a shared resource: data. And not just having a lot of it, but knowing how to manage it. The old comparison still holds: “Data is the new oil.”

Like oil, data on its own isn’t much use. It needs refining, cleaning, organizing, protecting and moving to become useful. Without that groundwork, even the smartest algorithms are limited.

That’s where infrastructure comes in. Dubai has made targeted investments in systems that not only store and secure data, but also make it work when it’s needed. Performance, privacy and compliance aren’t just checkboxes—they’re part of what makes the entire engine run.

Across this growing ecosystem, companies are contributing in different ways to help make this possible. NetApp, for instance, is supporting the development of sovereign, onpremise AI infrastructure designed to power real-time enterprise workloads.

As part of a 2025 collaboration with NVIDIA in Dubai, intelligent data systems were combined with high-performance computing to support agentic AI workloads in regulated sectors like healthcare.

These systems allowed local organizations to run AI models with ultra-low latency while ensuring full data sovereignty. The focus wasn’t just on speed or scale—it was about building trusted, reliable environments that align with local policies and long-term goals. What’s powerful about this model is how easily it can be applied elsewhere. Any region looking to scale AI responsibly can learn from it.

It’s about putting the right plumbing in place so data can move freely, securely, and usefully. And it’s about removing barriers, so public and private sectors can work together to get the most from their data.

THE FUTURE OF AI IN DUBAI

Dubai isn’t just keeping pace with global AI developments—it’s setting its own course. Across the city, there’s a shift toward systems that don’t just react, but anticipate.

Think of intersections where traffic lights change based on live congestion or public services that adjust before people even know they need them. These aren’t future concepts—they’re already showing up in everyday use.

This scenario isn’t a distant dream; it’s already underway. Initiatives like District 2020, the post-Expo 2020 innovation hub, are laying the groundwork for a resilient, inclusive and data-smart future.

Of course, building this kind of environment takes more than vision. It depends on infrastructure that respects privacy, moves quickly and delivers insights when they matter most.

The tools are important, but what makes them work is how well the data moves behind the scenes. Intelligence, in a city like Dubai, is no longer an add-on—it’s becoming part of the architecture.

WHAT’S NEXT?

Dubai’s approach is catching the attention of cities around the world, and for good reason. It’s not about rushing to adopt the newest tools or chasing trends. The real takeaway is simpler: build systems that can grow, adapt, and earn trust over time.

That starts with how data is handled. When information moves reliably and securely, everything else, AI models, automation, and public services, can function as intended and generate meaningful outcomes.

The most forward-thinking cities won’t just treat data as an IT issue. They’ll treat it as a long-term asset that shapes how decisions are made and services are delivered.

Because in the end, it’s not the tools that make a city smart. It’s how ready the city is to use its data in meaningful ways. And that’s where the real advantage lies.

NUTANIX STUDY FINDS FINANCIAL SERVICES FASTTRACKING GENAI ADOPTION—BUT LONG-TERM GAINS HINGE ON INFRASTRUCTURE AND TALENT

Most financial services leaders believe GenAI solutions help improve levels of productivity, automation, and efficiency. Real value lies beyond chatbots and content tools.

Nutanix (NASDAQ: NTNX), a leader in hybrid multicloud computing, announced the findings of its seventh annual global Financial Services Enterprise Cloud Index (ECI) survey and research report, which measures enterprise progress with cloud adoption in the industry. The research showed that nearly all the financial services organizations surveyed are currently leveraging GenAI applications or workloads today, with a focus on real-life

applications gravitating towards customer support and content development.

Despite widespread GenAI adoption, financial services organizations are struggling to keep pace. Most cite a skills gap needed to manage GenAI with existing infrastructure. Moreover, 97% of respondents admit they could do more to secure their GenAI models and applications.

“Financial services organizations are turning to containers and hybrid cloud not just as technology upgrades, but as strategic enablers of customer value,” said Lee Caswell, SVP of Product and Solutions Marketing at Nutanix.

“This year’s ECI report highlights how these technologies are delivering measurable ROI by powering GenAI applications that enhance fraud detection, strengthen cybersecurity, and elevate customer engagement. For

financial institutions, containers and hybrid cloud have become essential tools to drive innovation, agility, and trust in a rapidly evolving digital landscape.

“But AI and how organizations want to use it is also changing very rapidly. While GenAI remains a part of their activities, beyond the findings in the report, our customers are telling us they have moved to adopt agentic AI and are looking to harness its potential across their organizations and in how they interact with their customers.”

The report surveyed financial services leaders on GenAI adoption, Kubernetes, and container use, and where they’re running mission-critical applications today—and where they plan to run them next. Key findings include:

GENAI ADOPTION IS WIDESPREAD BUT NOT WITHOUT RISK

Nearly all industry respondents report using some form of GenAI today, with current use

cases focused on customer support, content generation, and automation. However, data privacy and security stand out as the top concerns, with 97% agreeing their organizations must do more to secure GenAI models and applications.

INFRASTRUCTURE MODERNIZATION IS NEEDED FOR GENAI SUCCESS

92% of respondents say their current infrastructure requires improvement to fully support cloud native applications and containers. Although containerization and Kubernetes are already in use, particularly for GenAI workloads, application portability and data silos persist as major hurdles.

IT TALENT SHORTAGE COULD SLOW MOMENTUM

Nearly all respondents (98%) face challenges scaling GenAI from development to production, citing lack of skilled personnel and integration issues. While 62% of respondents are actively hiring for GenAI expertise, training and upskilling remain critical priorities.

RETURN ON INVESTMENT (ROI) IS A PRIORITY BUT IT’S A LONG GAME

39% of respondents anticipate potential GenAI-related losses in the next 12 months,

while 58% expect gains within one to three years. This suggests that financial services leaders are embracing a longer-term view of GenAI success but also underscores the need for better tools to measure GenAI ROI.

SECURITY AND COMPLIANCE WILL CONTINUE TO BE IMPORTANT

The majority (96%) of respondents say GenAI is reshaping their data security and privacy priorities. Additionally, 90% express concern about data security in the broader IT vendor ecosystem, further highlighting the complexity of securing AI deployments.

For the seventh consecutive year, Nutanix commissioned a global research study to learn about the state of global enterprise cloud deployments, application containerization trends, and GenAI application adoption.

In the Fall of 2024, U.K. researcher Vanson Bourne surveyed 1,500 IT and DevOps/ Platform Engineering decision-makers around the world. The respondent base spanned multiple industries, business sizes, and geographies, including North and South America; Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA); and Asia-Pacific-Japan (APJ) region.

MODENA

Italy’s Automotive Soul and a Dream Destination for Petrolheads

There are few places on Earth where you can feel a city’s heartbeat in the roar of a V12 engine, but Modena, nestled in the heart of Italy’s Emilia-Romagna region, is one of them. For an automotive journalist like myself, and anyone who considers cars an extension of art, emotion, and engineering, Modena isn’t just a destination. It’s a pilgrimage. My visits to Modena offers me the ultimate automotive escape.

Modena is the hometown of Enzo Ferrari, and that alone places it firmly on the global motoring map. But the city doesn’t rest on its laurels. It cradles some of the most iconic marques in automotive history, Ferrari, Maserati, and Pagani - all within a short drive from each other. Each brand represents a different personality of Italian automotive mastery, yet all share the DNA of Modena’s precision, flair, and obsession with speed.

For motoring journalists like myself and enthusiasts alike, few experiences compare

to walking through the Museo Enzo Ferrari, where the story of Il Commendatore unfolds in an immersive tribute.

Housed within his father’s former workshop, the museum is a masterful blend of storytelling, architecture, and, of course, breathtaking cars. The yellow domed building, a nod to Ferrari’s iconic logo, showcases vintage and modern masterpieces in cinematic style.

Modena is also the crown jewel of Italy’s Motor Valley, and the driving experiences here are second to none. Whether it’s testdriving a Ferrari at the nearby Maranello track, exploring the Maserati showroom in central Modena, or arranging a private visit to Horacio Pagani’s hypercar sanctuary in San Cesario sul Panaro, the opportunities are endless. My track experiences here are etched in my memory bank as treasures that will be nurtured forever.

As a motoring journalist, what struck me most was the passion and the pride that everyone from mechanics to curators share when they speak about cars. In Modena, automobiles aren’t just machines. They are expressions of identity, craftsmanship, and speed.

While Modena accelerates the heart, it also nourishes the soul. It’s a gastronomic haven, home to three-Michelin-starred Osteria Francescana, consistently ranked among the world’s best restaurants.

After a morning among carbon fiber and roaring engines, a Modenese lunch of tagliatelle al ragù and aged balsamic vinegar from local acetaia is the perfect counterpoint.

Wander its cobbled streets, and Modena reveals its quieter treasures - Piazza Grande, the 12th-century Modena Cathedral, and artisanal boutiques that still handcraft leather driving gloves and bespoke shoes. It is

a town where time slows down, just enough for you to savor every detail.

While this destination is ideal for anyone whose pulse quickens at the sound of a revving engine, Modena is more than a stop on the map. It is the epicenter of everything we love about cars. It is where legacy, innovation, and style collide. Where you can dine like royalty, drive like a racer, and dream like Enzo himself.

As someone who lives and breathes the automotive world, I found Modena to be not just inspiring, but grounding. It reminded me why I fell in love with motoring in the first place. Whether you are a fellow journalist, a collector, or simply a fan of beautifully made machines, Modena encourages you not just to look, but to feel.

THE ELLINIKON RISES

A bold €8 billion vision begins to take form as Athens embraces a new era of intelligent urban living with Riviera Tower

Athens is undergoing a transformation unlike any in its modern history. On the southern coastline of the Greek capital, where the former international airport once stood, a new city is emerging. One that is intelligent, sustainable, and ambitious in every sense. Known as The Ellinikon, this master-planned development has just marked a significant construction milestone that underscores its momentum and international appeal.

At the centre of this milestone is Riviera Tower, which is set to become Greece’s first skyscraper and the tallest building in the country. Construction has now reached the halfway point, with 25 floors completed and the structure standing at 113 metres. When finished, the tower will reach 200 metres in height and feature 169 luxury residences across 50 floors. The tower is on track for completion in the first quarter of 2026 as part of Phase 1 of the wider Ellinikon development.

Riviera Tower is more than a record-breaking structure. It represents a new benchmark for

high-rise living in the region. The residences, which range from one to five-bedroom apartments and exclusive penthouses, offer panoramic views across the Athenian Riviera, combining urban sophistication with coastal serenity. With its sculptural form and commitment to sustainability, the tower is being positioned as a new icon of European design and innovation.

The broader Ellinikon project is a landmark initiative being led by LAMDA Development, part of the Latsis Group. With a total investment of €8 billion, it is Europe’s largest urban regeneration project and one of the most forward-thinking city concepts currently underway. The plan reimagines Athens’ old airport as a smart coastal city that reflects the principles of innovation, sustainability, and human-centric design.

Once completed, The Ellinikon is expected to generate up to 80,000 new jobs and contribute approximately 2.5 percent to Greece’s GDP, injecting new vitality into the national economy and establishing Athens as a regional hub for real estate, tourism, and technology.

The scale and scope of the project reflect a long-term commitment to economic transformation, with integrated residential, commercial, and recreational spaces that will serve both locals and international visitors.

The development stretches along 3.5 kilometres of the Athenian coastline and includes a sweeping coastal park of more than two million square metres—set to become the largest of its kind in the world. Alongside this green expanse will be a 310-berth superyacht marina, three luxury hotels including a flagship Mandarin Oriental, and what is projected to be Europe’s largest shopping mall. A total of 8,000 new residences will be built, reflecting a mix of architectural styles, sustainable materials, and future-ready technologies.

Behind the vision is a consortium of some of the world’s most respected names in architecture and urban planning. The master plan has been designed by Foster + Partners, the British architectural firm renowned for shaping cities from London to Riyadh and Abu Dhabi. The Ellinikon’s visual language and design intent have also been shaped by collaborations with leading firms including Bjarke Ingels Group, Kengo Kuma, and Sasaki, each contributing to a unified yet diverse aesthetic that blends innovation with contextual sensitivity.

Riviera Tower’s progress is a tangible sign that The Ellinikon is shifting from concept to reality. As cranes move steadily skyward and construction advances along the coast, Athens is positioning itself at the forefront of Europe’s urban future.

SUNLIGHT, SPRITZES, AND RIVIERA SPIRIT

L’Estate Chic Brunch at Chic Nonna - where Mediterranean glamour meets timeless Italian cuisine

In a city that thrives on elevated experiences, Chic Nonna has firmly secured its place as one of Dubai’s most refined dining destinations. Located in the heart of DIFC, this Italian gem combines classical culinary heritage with contemporary sophistication.

And now, with the launch of L’Estate Chic, Chic Nonna delivers not just a meal, but a summer reverie worthy of the Riviera. As a foodie, I ventured there recently with a group of friends and can firmly say we had an memorable dining experience.

As soon as we stepped into the grand, yet warmly elegant interiors of Chic Nonna, we were greeted by an ambience that felt both exclusive and welcoming. The soaring ceilings, soft golden tones, and rich textures set the stage for a gastronomic experience that is as thoughtfully designed as the space itself. This is not your average brunch—it is a curated Italian journey brought to life by the precision and passion of Executive Chef Francesco Torcasio.

Chef Francesco, whose culinary story began in Calabria and has since spanned iconic

kitchens across Italy, London, and Dubai, brings an unmistakable authenticity to every dish. As the creative force behind Chic Nonna’s kitchen, his style is rooted in Italian tradition but elevated through modern techniques and luxurious presentation.

At L’Estate Chic, this philosophy is in full bloom. The brunch menu unfolds like a love letter to Italian summer dining. Think delicately seasoned seafood dishes, handmade pasta that melts on the palate, and indulgent yet balanced main courses designed to be shared and savoured.

The atmosphere is a visual and sensory delight. Inspired by the Italian Riviera, the summer brunch offers a sun-kissed experience inside and out. Crisp white linens, cheerful parasols, and a Mediterranean playlist turn this DIFC venue into a seaside escape with refreshing signature drinks.

We felt the live music struck just the right balance between lively and luxurious, allowing conversation and indulgence to flow in harmony. Every detail, from the attentive service to the carefully paired drinks, reinforces Chic Nonna’s reputation for delivering excellence with ease.

Our verdict after three hours of pure indulgence made us realise we experienced so much more than just a brunch - L’Estate Chic gave us a chance to pause, indulge, and transport ourselves to the Italian coast

without leaving Dubai. It was an afternoon of culinary storytelling, where every bite told a tale of heritage, every sip captured the joy of summer, and every moment felt like a celebration of la dolce vita.

PARURE ATELIER

Parure Atelier unveils its latest high jewelry marvel, the Mahenge Spinel Collection – a dazzling celebration of one of the most extraordinary gemstone discoveries of the 21st century. Distinguished by vivid pink to fiery red hues and unparalleled inner glow, Mahenge Spinel has emerged as a new icon in the world of fine gemstones, revered by collectors and connoisseurs alike.

First discovered near the Tanzanian village of Mahenge in 2007, this exceptional variety of Spinel captivated the global gem market with its electrifying saturation and naturally luminous quality, thanks to its high chromium content. Unlike traditional Burmese or Ceylon Spinel, the Mahenge variety appears almost incandescent – lit from within by nature itself.

Adding to its allure is the gem’s purity and integrity. Unlike rubies, Mahenge Spinel is rarely subjected to heat treatment. Most stones boast remarkable clarity without enhancement, and in rare instances where minor crack-filling is applied – a technique akin to that used with Paraiba tourmalines and emeralds where full transparency is ensured with certification from leading gemmological authorities such as GRS, GIA, and Lotus.

The Mahenge Spinel Collection from Parure Atelier is more than a curation of rare gems – it is a celebration of selfexpression and enduring beauty. Each piece is a work of art, meticulously handcrafted to capture the soul of the stone and the vision of its wearer.

From bespoke consultations to one-of-a-kind creations and dedicated aftercare, Parure Atelier transforms the act of acquiring fine jewelry into an intimate and unforgettable journey – a legacy of elegance to be treasured across generations.

Throughout the past 20 years, the colour orange has become a signature part of OMEGA’s dive watch designs, helping to improve visibility and safety underwater. The emblematic orange shade has added vibrancy and unique aesthetic appeal across multiple Seamaster collections, and this year, it is introduced into the iconic Diver 300M range, giving customers the choice between two distinctive models in stainless steel.

The entire Seamaster Diver 300M collection recently underwent a comprehensive revamp, with new mesh bracelets, domed sapphire crystals, and oxalic anodised aluminium bezels. These latest models continue that same design theme, while establishing their own identity through a black and orange colourway.

Each 42 mm timepiece is distinguished by its black aluminium dial, with rhodium plated skeletonized hands and indexes that are filled with white Super-LumiNova for a blue glow in dark conditions. Most notably, the central seconds hand is coated with an orange varnish, along with the indexes at the four quarter positions. There is also an orange Seamaster name, located beneath an OMEGA logo that is transferred in white.

Importantly, OMEGA has retained all of the Diver 300M’s legendary features, which have remained a defining part of the collection’s design heritage since 1993. These include the helium escape valve at 10 o’clock, the scalloped bezel and protruding crown guards, as well as the diving scale on the bezel – added in white Super-LumiNova for these editions.

This new orange style has been delivered in two different expressions. Either on a brushed mesh bracelet with clasp, or with an integrated orange rubber strap with foldover clasp.

Inside, each watch is driven by the OMEGA Co-Axial Master Chronometer Calibre 8806, visible through the caseback's sapphire crystal. Excellence in precision, performance and magnetic resistance is guaranteed by the Master Chronometer certification, with tests certified by the Swiss Federal Institute of Metrology (METAS).

A LEGACY IN MOTION

Rolls-Royce Reimagines Ancient Chinese Mural Art In Bespoke Masterpieces

In a breathtaking fusion of heritage and haute design, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars unveils a trio of Bespoke commissions inspired by one of the most profound cultural treasures of China: the ancient mural art of the Dunhuang Mogao Caves.

This is an extraordinary cultural tribute where craftsmanship meets heritage on wheels. Commissioned through the marque’s ultraexclusive Private Office Shanghai, this trilogy, comprising a Phantom Extended, Black Badge Cullinan, and Black Badge Spectre, transcends automotive design to become rolling works of art.

Rooted in over a thousand years of artistry, the Dunhuang murals, found deep within the sacred grottoes of northwestern China, are a

testament to the country’s spiritual, cultural, and artistic legacy.

Adorning cave walls along the ancient Silk Road, these paintings depict celestial beings, natural motifs, and symbolic narratives that have shaped China’s visual language across dynasties. Now, these abstract ideals are delicately translated into the contours and cabins of the world’s most luxurious motor cars.

Each of the three commissions carries a recurring design motif named Silken Spirit, created by Shuai Feng, Bespoke Designer at the Shanghai Private Office. Inspired by the Spirit of Ecstasy and the flowing elegance of imperial silk, the motif weaves through interiors and exteriors alike, offering a visual

metaphor for grace in motion. Arguably the most intricate of the three, the Phantom Extended is finished in a poetic two-tone— Ningye Purple, drawn from Tang Dynasty verse and the twilight skies of northern China, paired with elegant English White.

The true marvel lies within its hand-painted Gallery, where artist Chloe Dowsett recreates the movement of flying apsaras, celestial dancers of Buddhist lore, using a modern interpretation of traditional reduction block printing. Each delicate stroke, painted by sable brush on black leather, reveals depth and rhythm rarely seen in automotive artistry.

The celestial theme continues across a Starlight Headliner, where 1,344 hand-placed fibre-optic ‘stars’ and 192 ‘shooting stars’

mimic the cosmos. Inside, Cashmere Grey and Black leather upholstery, Canadel wood panelling, and inlaid stainless steel complete a cabin that is both reverent and revolutionary.

The Cullinan commission turns heads in Danqian Pink, extending to the centres of its 23-inch forged wheels. Inside, Blushing Pink leather and a complex Placed Perforation pattern, crafted from over 107,000 microperforations, recall the ethereal cloudscapes over Goodwood. In the rear, deep Navy leather adds dramatic contrast, while the illuminated Silken Spirit motif glows from the Bespoke Starlight Headliner, quietly asserting elegance through subtle luminosity.

In a bold expression of dichotomy, the Black Badge Spectre arrives in a dramatic Qingshan Blue and Diamond Black two-tone, with the Illuminated Grille glowing in Turchese. The interior features a striking duality: Turchese and Black leathers in the front, contrasting with a monochrome rear. Starlight Doors, a bespoke headliner, and illuminated Turchese treadplates create a symphony of colour and light that feels both futuristic and ceremonial.

Far beyond aesthetics, these commissions represent a cross-cultural dialogue and a visual meditation on heritage, modernity, and global craftsmanship. In this exquisite trilogy, Rolls-Royce Bespoke proves that a motor car can be more than an object of luxury; it can be a canvas of cultural reverence, a vessel for storytelling, and a lasting tribute to the beauty of preservation through innovation.

DUNHUANG

MURAL ART IS ONE OF CHINA’S GREATEST CULTURAL TREASURES, WHERE OVER A THOUSAND YEARS OF SACRED STORYTELLING UNFOLD ACROSS CAVE WALLS ALONG THE SILK ROAD.

THE RISE OF SLOW INTERIORS

DESIGNING FOR STILLNESS, SIMPLICITY, AND SOUL

Exploring a more mindful way to live and decorate, just in time for summer

As summer settles into the UAE, bringing with it a natural slowing of pace, many homeowners are turning inward - both emotionally and spatially. The concept of “slow interiors” is gaining quiet momentum in the design world, offering a welcome alternative to fast-moving trends and over-styled spaces. At its core, this approach prioritizes intentional living, timeless aesthetics, and emotional resonance within the home.

Rather than following the rhythm of seasonal fads, slow interiors invite us to rethink the spaces we inhabit. The philosophy, rooted in the broader slow living movement, encourages creating homes that are not only visually beautiful but emotionally grounding. It is about places that support our daily rituals, invite calm, and reflect personal values.

In the UAE, one of the brands exploring this movement in depth is Loom Collection. Their design ethos draws inspiration from Scandinavian and coastal aesthetics, with an emphasis on clean lines, honest materials, and subtle elegance. While Loom may not be the only brand championing this approach, their curation offers a valuable reference point for how to interpret slow interiors in the modern Middle Eastern context.

The materials tell the story: natural woods like smoked oak, soft linen upholstery, gentle curves in seating and cabinetry - elements that whisper rather than shout. Their latest summer edit embraces a softer palette of oat, ivory, and stone, layering textures that soothe rather than stimulate. The effect is a kind of sensory retreat, where form follows feeling, and spaces are designed to exhale.

Slow interiors also speak to functionality without compromise. Think modular pieces that evolve with your needs, discreet storage that keeps visual noise at bay, and finishes that improve with age. It’s about cultivating a home that adapts to life’s rhythms, not just its aesthetics.

Sustainability, too, is a pillar of this movement. Many pieces within the slow interiors vocabulary, including those curated by Loom Collection, are made using ethically sourced, durable materials and artisanal techniques. It is a reminder that good design is not just about how a piece looks in the moment, but how it lives with us over time.

Perhaps the greatest appeal of slow interiors lies in their invitation to pause and reflect. In a region known for its dynamism and modernity, this approach

offers a refreshing counterpoint and an opportunity to find stillness and authenticity through the spaces we call home.

Whether you are starting from scratch or simply refreshing a room, embracing slow interiors means curating with care, investing in quality, and decorating not for show—but for soul.

THE ARTFUL UNION OF YACHTING AND FASHION DESIGN

With MAIORA and ELIE SAAB’s

42 EXUMA, two

luxury

worlds merge to redefine modern elegance on water

In the realm of high luxury, the lines between disciplines have started to blur. Nowhere is this more strikingly evident than in the debut of the 42 EXUMA, a 42-metre masterpiece born from the inspired collaboration between historic Italian shipyard MAIORA and iconic fashion house ELIE SAAB. This yacht is the embodiment of what happens when haute couture meets maritime engineering, where aesthetics and innovation coalesce in a singular experience of refined living at sea.

The 42 EXUMA reimagines yachting through a lens typically reserved for high fashion: bespoke, expressive, and exquisitely detailed. From its sculpted exterior lines by acclaimed designer Giorgio Maria Cassetta to the curated interiors envisioned by ELIE SAAB under the creative direction of Carlo Colombo, the yacht reflects a new chapter in cross-

industry design—one where movement, luxury, and lifestyle merge in harmony.

At first glance, fashion and yachting may seem worlds apart, yet both are deeply rooted in craftsmanship, proportion, materiality, and the celebration of space. With the 42 EXUMA, these parallels come to life. From the fluid silhouette of the yacht, evoking the drape of an Elie Saab gown, to the interplay of natural light and mirrored surfaces inside, every design decision tells a story of refinement and restraint.

The choice of materials—Mystic Ocean marble, bronzed mirrors, Fumo di Londra stone, and marine-grade teak wood— offers a tactile narrative that bridges the terrestrial world of fashion ateliers with the salt-kissed glamour of the open sea. Accents from the ELIE SAAB Maison collection are seamlessly woven into

custom-designed furnishings, creating an atmosphere of effortless sophistication.

But beyond its visual elegance, 42 EXUMA represents a paradigm shift in the very concept of yacht living. Rather than adhering to legacy layouts, MAIORA and ELIE SAAB have restructured the onboard flow to prioritise experience over tradition. Guest suites have been elevated and relocated to the main deck for natural light and sea views, while the upper deck is conceived as an open-plan living area that dissolves boundaries between interior and exterior.

This holistic approach to space echoes the ethos of modern fashion: versatile, intuitive, and built for how we live now. The sun deck, spanning 80 square metres, becomes both a sanctuary and a stage. The forward-facing infinity deck, a symbol of movement and serenity, offers

uninterrupted views and uninterrupted thoughts.

As fashion expands beyond garments and yachting evolves into experiential design, collaborations like MAIORA x ELIE SAAB are setting a new precedent. Here, design is not confined by industry; it flows across disciplines to reflect the desires of a new generation of luxury consumersthose who seek harmony, not hierarchy, between beauty and purpose. Slated for delivery in Summer 2027, the first unit of the 42 EXUMA has already been sold, marking the beginning of what promises to be an exciting new frontier.

Everything feels intentional, from the sculpted sports pedals to the NFC-enabled card key.

As one of the first motoring journalists to get behind the wheel of the new 2025 Lincoln Aviator, I experienced firsthand a vehicle that is more than just a luxury SUV — it is an elevated, almost ethereal experience. Refined to perfection and reimagined for the discerning driver, the latest Aviator blends unmistakable design with intelligent technology, spacious comfort, and dynamic performance.

With its debut in the Middle East, this elegant three-row SUV continues Lincoln’s legacy of creating sanctuaries on wheels — effortless, commanding, and beautifully poised.

EXTERIOR

The 2025 Aviator exudes a polished elegance that makes an immediate impression. A reimagined front fascia features a redesigned signature Lincoln

grille, flanked by sleek new LED headlamps that strike the perfect balance between presence and subtlety. The aerodynamic profile is further accentuated by clean lines and sculptural surfaces, refined down to every detail, from the new hood contours to the striking wheel designs. Available in both Reserve and Presidential trims, the Aviator’s design language reflects its dual character: grounded in tradition, yet prepared for a modern future.

INTERIOR

Step inside to be greeted by an interior that channels serenity and sophistication. We loved the hand-selected leathers, ambient lighting, and meticulously stitched trim. For 2025, new interior themes introduce richer hues and refined finishes that heighten the cabin’s ambiance. The 30way Perfect Position front seats with

massage and memory settings redefine comfort, while the second and third rows provide generous legroom, with heated and ventilated seating in both the Reserve’s 7-seater configuration and the Presidential’s 6-seat layout with captain’s chairs. The panoramic sunroof and power-folding third-row add convenience to the comfort equation, making this SUV ideal for family journeys and executive travel alike.

TECHNOLOGY

Lincoln’s Digital Experience reimagines in-car connectivity with a 13.2-inch center screen and a 12.4-inch digital instrument cluster. Seamless smartphone integration through Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ ensures a personalized connection, while second-row passengers can now control audio independently via the new rear audio interface. The

immersive Revel® Ultima® 3D Audio System, with 28 precisely positioned speakers, envelops the cabin in concerthall sound quality. Wireless charging, multiple USB ports across all three rows, and voice-activated controls enhance ease and personalization..

PERFORMANCE

Beneath the Aviator’s sculpted hood lies a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 engine producing 400 horsepower and 563 Nm of torque, mated to a smooth-shifting 10-speed automatic transmission. This powertrain offers effortless acceleration and a whisper-quiet glide at cruising speeds, elevated further by Air Glide adaptive suspension, which subtly lowers for graceful entry and adapts to terrain conditions in real-time.

The drive is further customizable with five selectable modes: Normal, Conserve, Excite, Slippery, and Deep Conditions, providing confident handling whether you’re navigating city streets, highways, or unpredictable terrain.

SAFETY

The Aviator doesn’t compromise on peace of mind. Equipped with Lincoln Co-Pilot360™ Drive 2.0, the SUV boasts

advanced driver-assist features such as Pre-Collision Assist, Blind Spot Detection, Evasive Steering Assist, Reverse Brake Assist, and Adaptive Cruise Control.

The 360-degree camera, Head-Up Display, and Pixel LED Headlamps offer visibility and clarity, adapting to the road and weather conditions with effortless intelligence.

OUR VERDICT

The 2025 Lincoln Aviator redefines what a premium SUV should be — a seamless blend of sanctuary and strength. From its exquisitely sculpted exterior to its soothing, high-tech interior, it invites drivers and passengers alike into an experience of comfort, performance, and purpose.

CHERY TIGGO 9

Big Ambitions in a Bold New Flagship SUV

Chery has been expanding its SUV lineup with impressive speed, and the Tiggo 9 represents the pinnacle of the brand’s ambitions. As the largest and most premium model in the Tiggo family, this all-wheel-drive flagship is designed to deliver space, technology, and refinement in a package aimed squarely at buyers who might have never considered a Chinese brand. After a drive in the Tiggo 9 AWD in Dubai, it’s clear Chery is serious about competing in the big leagues.

EXTERIOR

The Tiggo 9 makes a strong first impression with its imposing stance and well-proportioned body. The front fascia features a bold, expansive grille framed by slim matrix LED headlights and dramatic vertical air inlets, giving it a sophisticated yet assertive look. Along the sides, clean body lines and subtle chrome trim convey a sense of understated elegance. At the rear, a full-width LED light bar ties the design together and emphasizes the SUV’s width. Large alloy wheels and flush-fitting door handles complete a design that feels genuinely premium and contemporary.

INTERIOR

Step inside, and you’ll find a cabin that feels more like a luxury SUV than a budget alternative. The dashboard is dominated by a sweeping curved display that merges the digital instrument cluster with the central infotainment screen. Soft-touch materials cover nearly every surface, complemented by tasteful metal accents and customizable ambient lighting.

The seats, upholstered in quilted leather can be heated, ventilated, and offer memory functions. This is useful for our market during summer when we need our seats ventilated. In the second row, there’s generous legroom and even the option for captain’s chairs in some trims. The third row, while tighter, is usable for

kids or short trips, adding versatility to this family-friendly package.

TECHNOLOGY

Chery has packed the Tiggo 9 with technology designed to impress. The dual-screen setup delivers sharp graphics and fast responses, while wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto keep smartphones fully integrated. A head-up display projects essential driving data onto the windscreen, reducing distraction. Other highlights include a 14-speaker Sony premium audio system, multizone climate control, wireless phone charging, and a comprehensive suite of driver assistance systems, adaptive cruise control, lane centering, automatic emergency braking, and more. For a vehicle in this price segment, the level of equipment is remarkable.

PERFORMANCE

Powering the Tiggo 9 AWD is a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine producing around 254 hp and 390 Nm of torque, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. Power delivery is smooth and plentiful, whether you’re merging onto the highway

or overtaking slower traffic. The allwheel-drive system adds an extra layer of confidence on slippery roads or rougher surfaces.

While the Tiggo 9 prioritizes comfort over outright sportiness, the suspension does an admirable job of soaking up imperfections, and the cabin remains hushed even at higher speeds. Steering is light in town but weights up reassuringly on the move, making it easy to maneuver for such a large vehicle.

OUR VERDICT

With the Tiggo 9 AWD, Chery has set a new benchmark for its brand, and arguably, for value-driven large SUVs in general. It combines head-turning design, a refined and spacious interior, an impressive suite of technology, and strong real-world performance. If you are in the market for a three-row SUV that offers premium features without the premium price tag, the Tiggo 9 deserves to be on your shortlist. It’s proof that Chery is no longer just catching up. They are confidently stepping into the spotlight.

BRIDGESTONE’S TIPS FOR CHOOSING RIGHT TYRES

Road travel increases significantly during holidays or summer, prompting many drivers to change their vehicle’s tyres for safer journeys. However, selecting the right tyres is not always straightforward, as numerous factors must be considered. Bridgestone, a global leader in premium tyres and sustainable mobility solutions, offers tips below to help you make the right choice when buying tyres:

ONLY APPROVED TYRES

When replacing your car’s tyres, you should consult the vehicle’s technical documentation for the tyre dimensions and see all the ‘equivalent’ alternatives based on load capacity index, speed category, identical outer diameter (with a ±3% tolerance), and the corresponding rim profile.

You can find the tyre’s dimensions and specifications on the sidewall marking. For example, a 205/55 R16 89V tyre includes:

• Width: 205 mm

• Aspect ratio: 55 (height/width ratio expressed as a percentage)

• Rim diameter: 16 inches (the ‘R’ indicates a radial tyre)

• Load index: 89 (580 kg per tyre)

• Speed rating: V (up to 240 km/h)

The manufacturing date is indicated in the DOT code on the sidewall. The last four digits (e.g., 1024) represent the week and year of manufacture: week 10 of 2024.

DON’T COMPROMISE ON SAFETY

Many drivers routinely choose budget tyres without considering their pros and cons, which can be a serious mistake. Choosing the right tyres and maintaining them properly can significantly lower fuel consumption, improve driving safety, and prevent risks and breakdowns. That is why opting for premium tyres is important, as they offer greater durability and exceptional performance compared to low-cost alternatives.

A TYRE FOR EVERY CAR AND DRIVING STYLE

The type of car and driving style are also key factors in tyre selection. For electric vehicles or calm drivers, the priority is usually low rolling resistance (for maximum energy and fuel efficiency), quietness, comfort, and maximum safety.

Conversely, for powerful vehicles and/or sporty drivers, the requirements are entirely different. In this case, tyres should be chosen for their handling precision, steering

response, high stability, cornering control, and superior grip.

GEOGRAPHY AND WEATHER MATTER TOO

It is also essential to consider the region you drive in and its weather conditions. Driving on mountainous roads in winter (with low temperatures and occasional rainfall) is not the same as driving during summer (with drier climate and high temperatures). Based on these factors, you can choose summer tyres (fitted on most vehicles), winter tyres (better performance below 7°C), or all-season tyres (which combine the benefits of both, but are less specialised for each season).

Considering these tips, it is important to remember that only a small surface area of the tyre, roughly the size of a postcard, maintains contact with the road.

Each tyre type or model is designed to meet specific needs, so making the right choice is key to ensuring performance, safety, and driving experience. Ultimately, we cannot always predict what will happen on the road, but we can prepare by choosing the appropriate tyres that meet our expectations and needs because they can make all the difference when it matters most.
