TRANSFORMING MALTA'S TOURISM OFFERING WITH AUTHENTIC EXPERIENCES CARLO MICALLEF

Chief Executive Officer of the Malta Tourism Authority

Carlo Micallef has dedicated 26 years of his career to the tourism industry, with a particular passion for marketing and promoting destinations. After graduating with a degree in management and marketing, Micallef initially ventured into the real estate industry in Malta, handling advertising and marketing.

However, his true calling was in destination marketing, especially for an island with a limited local economy like Malta. In 1997, he seized the opportunity to join the Malta Tourism Authority (MTA) as a junior marketing executive and embarked on his journey within the organization.

Micallef's early years at MTA coincided with the emergence of the Russian market as a new and promising source of visitors to Malta. Despite the challenges of limited funds, Micallef successfully developed the Russian market by inviting journalists and TV teams, creating visibility and generating interest in Malta among Russian and former Soviet Union audiences.

Building on this success, he expanded his responsibilities to include the English market, which remains the primary market for Malta's tourism industry. Micallef's dedication to promoting Malta led him to host journalists, VIPs, and travel industry

professionals, and he eventually rose to lead the PR division of the MTA.

In 2003, Micallef took on a new challenge as the Director of MTA's Amsterdam office, overseeing the Benelux and Scandinavian markets. During his three-year tenure, he focused on diversifying Malta's source markets, targeting emerging markets in Eastern Europe, the Middle East, North America, and Asia.

This strategic approach aimed to spread tourism throughout the year and reduce dependency on specific

peak seasons. The recent pandemic posed significant challenges for Malta's tourism industry, as it did globally.

However, Micallef and the MTA remained committed to promoting Malta despite budget cuts. They continued to engage with the Middle East market through online activities, webinars, and virtual meetings, reminding people about Malta and preparing for the eventual recovery. He recognizes that tourism is a vital pillar of Malta's economy, accounting for 20% of it and he is optimistic about the industry's

resilience.

One of Malta's unique selling points is its vibrant and diverse offerings beyond the typical Mediterranean island experience. Micallef and his team highlight the dynamic nature of Malta, describing it as a vibrant country with numerous activities and attractions.

They present Malta as a "zip file" that opens up to reveal layers of history, culture, and natural beauty. Micallef emphasizes the richness of Malta's heritage, from Roman ruins and Neolithic temples to the cities built by the Knights of Saint John. Preservation of the country's cultural heritage is a significant focus, ensuring that visitors can walk through history and experience the legacy of various civilizations.

Sustainable tourism is also a priority for Micallef and the MTA. They promote climate-friendly operations, such as hotels and restaurants adopting environmentally friendly practices. Malta has embraced electric vehicles, both in public transportation and the public sector.

The aim is to minimize waste, including food waste, and encourage

tourism throughout the year, avoiding overcrowding during peak seasons. Technology plays a crucial role in the tourism industry, and Micallef recognizes its significance. MTA utilizes technology for monitoring tourist movements, conducting surveys, gathering information, and planning future activities.

Online platforms, social media, websites, and mobile apps help disseminate information, engage

with visitors, and enhance the overall visitor experience. Looking ahead, Micallef anticipates various challenges in the tourism industry, but he emphasizes the importance of being proactive and adapting to new circumstances. Malta's small size and close-knit community facilitate quick decision-making processes, allowing them to address challenges swiftly.

Collaboration with stakeholders, including the local business

community, government, and residents, is essential. Micallef and the MTA actively involve key industry representatives through the MTA Board, ensuring a collaborative approach to policy-making and strategy implementation.

To those considering a career in tourism, Micallef advises pursuing it with passion and dedication. While the industry can be financially rewarding, true fulfillment comes from seeing the results of one's efforts and being proud of the achievements. He highlights that the tourism industry requires commitment and is not a typical nine-to-five job. The ability to adapt and the willingness to immerse oneself in the field are crucial for success.

As for upcoming events and initiatives, Malta Tourism has a vibrant calendar planned. The summer months offer a plethora of open-air events, including music concerts, such as classical performances and pop music festivals.

Additionally, Malta aims to diversify its events calendar to include sports activities during the winter months. The country continues to position itself as a destination that offers a

unique blend of culture, history, art, and outdoor experiences, providing visitors with the best value for their holiday.

In terms of the future of the tourism industry, Micallef envisions a focus on quality across all levels of the tourism experience. From selfcatering accommodations to 5-star hotels, from taxi services to retail establishments, Malta aims to provide excellence throughout the entire visitor's journey. Investing in the training and upskilling of the

workforce is a priority, ensuring that all individuals involved in the industry can offer the highest level of service.

Micallef looks forward to welcoming more visitors from the Middle East and Gulf regions, building on existing connections with airlines and hubs in Europe. With a vision for quality and a focus on visitor satisfaction, Micallef and the Malta Tourism Authority continue to shape the future of tourism on the island.

LEADING THE DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION OF HERITAGE MALTA NOEL ZAMMIT

CEO of Heritage Malta

Noel Zammit, the CEO of Heritage Malta, has had a remarkable journey within the organization. Starting his career as a software engineer, Zammit joined the Center for Restoration in 2010, which later merged with Heritage Malta. Initially responsible for the IT department, he saw immense potential in utilizing technology to enhance Malta's cultural heritage sector.

This realization motivated him to advance his career within Heritage Malta, eventually rising through the ranks to become the CEO in 2017. Zammit's passion for cultural heritage stems from his work in the

IT sector, where he observed the lack of technological advancements in preserving and promoting Malta's rich history.

He recognized the importance of protecting the nation's identity and felt a deep sense of pride in undertaking this noble mission. Heritage Malta's mandate to safeguard the country's heritage resonated with Zammit, driving him to dedicate almost 20 years to the agency.

Throughout his tenure, Zammit has spearheaded numerous projects that highlight Heritage Malta's

commitment to conservation and restoration. The ongoing restoration of the Grand Masters Palace and the Malta Maritime Museum are two key endeavors that demonstrate the agency's dedication to preserving important historical landmarks. The Grand Masters Palace, a project costing approximately ¤30-35 million, will open its first phase later this year, while the revitalized Malta Maritime Museum will showcase the maritime history of the island.

However, Zammit's achievements extend beyond physical restorations. He takes great pride in the restructuring of Heritage Malta,

transforming it from a reactive and underfunded organization into a proactive agency.

This transformation includes the establishment of specialized units such as the Underwater Cultural Heritage Unit and the Digitization Unit. Moreover, the agency has adopted a new ethos focused on inclusivity, inviting everyone to be part of the mission to protect Malta's cultural heritage.

Engaging with local communities and stakeholders is a vital aspect of Heritage Malta's work. Zammit and his team have launched initiatives such as the Heritage Malta passport scheme, providing free unlimited access to all museums and sites for students, parents, senior citizens, and residents of Malta. This program has successfully opened doors to previously skeptical individuals, fostering engagement and building value within the local community. Heritage Malta also collaborates with various local associations, councils, and heritage organizations, ensuring their involvement and contribution to the agency's goals.

Internationally, Zammit and his team have actively pursued partnerships and collaborations. Heritage Malta's brand has become well-known beyond the shores of Malta, facilitating connections and collaborations with museums and institutions worldwide. They engage in cultural diplomacy, working closely with embassies and foreign offices to establish connections and promote mutual understanding.

Through exhibitions, research exchanges, and joint projects,

Heritage Malta continues to expand its international network and raise its profile on the global stage. Looking to the future, Zammit envisions Heritage Malta as an organization that continually evolves to meet the needs of its diverse audience. He emphasizes the importance of visitor engagement and the need for museums to adopt a more visitorcentered approach.

Heritage Malta aims to create emotional connections with audiences by telling compelling stories and interpreting historical artifacts in the context of contemporary issues. The agency also recognizes the significance of engaging younger generations, utilizing digital media and adapting museum setups to cater to their preferences.

To the youth interested in working in the cultural heritage industry, Zammit offers valuable advice. He highlights the wide range of roles

available, not limited to historians and archaeologists but open to individuals from various backgrounds such as scientists, architects, and engineers.

Heritage Malta actively collaborates with universities, offering relevant projects and opportunities for students across different faculties. Zammit believes that everyone has the opportunity to contribute to the noble mission of protecting and preserving Malta's unique identity.

Under Noel Zammit's leadership, Heritage Malta has undergone a profound transformation, leveraging technology and collaborations to propel the agency into the future.

With a strong focus on community engagement, visitor-centered approaches, and international partnerships, Heritage Malta continues to safeguard Malta's cultural heritage and inspire audiences worldwide.

SCENARIO PLANNING HAKAN OZEL

General Manager – Shangri-La Hotel, Dubai

SPOTLIGHT | 18 | Global Trend Monitor

At a time of volatility and change, hospitality executives often step out of their current framework and imagine the future world, which may arrive sooner than expected.

Scenario Planning is the setup process for creating several scenarios, possibilities or mental models and using them to support decision making in business. It uses possible future outcomes to improve the quality of decision making. Using the scenarios successfully is more important than building them. They explore a spectrum of different possible answers to core questions and uncertainties facing the organizations. They capture the possible answers to these questions and uncertainties and are used to improve the robustness of plans or

create new plans on newly visible options.

SCENARIOS VS FORECAST

Scenario Planning stimulates debates about choices, develops strategies resilient against several futures, tests business plans against the future and tries to anticipate the future as a support to decision making. While forecasts can be used for any of these purposes, the use of imaginative and qualitatively different worlds is a central theme of most current uses of scenarios. Forecasts aim for accuracy, using business techniques whilst scenarios explore the space of uncertainties in defining possible futures in business..

SCENARIOS DEVELOPMENT

Creation of scenarios is an excellent management development tool for a team, taking team members beyond defending their current role. It is useful for management teams to take one or two days to develop scenarios for their business based on existing information within the group as a way of exploring shared perceptions. A significant advantage for an organization in creating their own scenarios is that challenges will emerge during the research. These are events that would be detrimental but are judged unlikely to happen. Action to determine the process for dealing with these and subsequent discussions are often beneficial and prompt new insights.

The emphasis in organizations is moving away from developing new scenarios towards using and tailoring existing scenarios, and working with management teams on the implications of the scenarios for their business or projects. Business plans always incorporate the management team's assumptions, which are often implicit. By using scenarios, the team recognizes the future world built into their plan and explores the implications of other possible worlds.

NATURE OF SCENARIOS

Most hospitality executives who work with scenarios find it stimulating and enjoyable. The next stage, making the most of scenarios planning, depends on deciding what problems the scenarios are intended to solve; creating or exploring scenarios that explore the uncertainty space; giving the scenarios effort high enough status through off-site meetings and management feedback; using the scenarios to drive decision making by stimulating debate, developing strategy, testing business plans or anticipating the future; and using imaginative and frequent communication to embed scenario thinking into discussions and decisions.

CONCLUSION

Creating alternative plans for Creating alternative plans for future uncertainties reinforces priorities and helps the team to better understand the strategic goals, but most importantly how to achieve them through scenarios.

Scenario planning helps teams to capture the opportunities even though the original plan changes. Understanding the primary goals of a project, or business strategy empowers the whole team to find new and innovative solutions when something does not go or there is a possibility that it will not go right according to plan. Developing and most importantly implementing the variety of scenarios redefines the organizational goals and draws a GPS that any team can follow.

WHY EVERYONE IS TALKING ABOUT PICKLEBALL, THE HOTTEST NEW SPORT IN TOWN

Like tennis but hate the idea of chasing after lost balls? Or keen on taking up badminton, but you’re after something a little more energetic? If these are the kind of sporting questions that keep you up at night, then the fast-growing sport of pickleball could provide the perfect solution. A low impact sport that’s easy on the joints makes it an ideal pastime for newbies into racket games, or those looking for

something a little different to pique their fitness interest.

Get ready and scratch that itch at Dubai Sports World this summer, where pickleball has made its grand entrance for the first time as one of the many sports on offer during the three-month-long festival of fitness. Whether you are a complete beginner, a practiced pro, or even want to improve your cardio level, all

are welcome to experience the muchtalked-about new sport through classes provided by ‘Sportsify World Pickleball Academy’ at Dubai Sports World.

While a game of football, rugby, cricket, or hockey may be out of reach for some, pairing up with a friend or colleague to take on a pickleball duo is a great way to bond and develop new relationships - while seeking out

that inner ‘mentality monster’ on the sports field.

The stress-busting attributes of sport are well documented, with team sports in particular, proven support for mental wellness.

Played on a court similar in size to a badminton court (6 metres by 13 metres), but with a net the same height as tennis - pickleball is played as a singles or doubles game with racquets sized slightly smaller than those used in a game of tennis.

It is the racquet’s holes and size that make the perforated ball travel slower, making for longer rallies and more adventurous shot making in even the most novice of players.

Games are contested with underarm serves, and are won by the team that reaches 11 points first, with a clear two-point margin from their opponent. A 2-metre zone from the net called ‘The Kitchen’ must be cleared by the server, and players are prohibited from making volleys from this area during play.

The game originated in the US in the 1960s and has grown in popularity in recent years due to its accessibility and playability, a key reason why it was added to the 2023 list of sports for Dubai Sports World.

Pickleball has a number of health benefits of note and can help to

improve your balance, coordination, and overall hand-eye coordination:

- Improves cardiovascular health. Pickleball is a great way to get your heart rate up and improve your cardiovascular health. A study by the University of North Carolina found that pickleball players had a 12 per cent increase in cardiorespiratory fitness after playing three times per week for six months.

- Strengthens muscles and bones. The constant movement and quick changes of direction help to build muscle and improve bone density.

- Improves balance and coordination. The need to quickly react to the ball and move your body in different ways helps to improve these important skills.

- Reduces stress and anxiety. The physical activity helps to release endorphins, which have moodboosting effects. Additionally, the social interaction involved in playing pickleball can help to reduce feelings of isolation and loneliness.

- Improves mental health. A study by the University of Utah found that pickleball players had a 30 per cent decrease in depression symptoms after playing three times per week for six months.

Not only is the sport a great gateway into racquet sports, it can also offer

an opportunity for players of other sports like tennis and squash to ease themselves back into the game post injury.

But make no mistake, while pickleball can be a perfect sport for some gentle exercise, it can also ignite the competitive fire within to get the heart pumping with a hotly contested match. Even, or perhaps especially, between friends.

Players can take to the court at Dubai Sports World this summer, where indoor pickleball courts can be booked via the Dubai Sports World App until September 10. Courts are available for hire from 8am until midnight from Monday to Sunday for AED 150 per hour.

The 2023 edition of DSW is bigger than ever before, with 40 courts and pitches available for hire across 300,000 square feet of airconditioned, easy access facilities at DWTC.

In addition to pickleball, there is a dedicated gym area, complete with Matrix cardio and strength training equipment, and an enclosed private fitness studio with a capacity for 40 people.

Dubai Sports World is the UAE’s biggest and most varied indoor sporting venue offering everyone the opportunity to focus on their wellbeing, all summer long.

Dubai Sports World takes place daily at Za'abeel Halls 2-6 from 8am to 12 midnight. Dedicated parking is accessible from Al Mustaqbal Street and visitors can also park at Za’abeel parking and the Exhibition Street parking.

To secure your spot on the courts, make your reservations now at www. dubaisportsworld.ae or by using the free Dubai Sports World smartphone app available on App Store and Google Play.

Visitors can also enjoy gym packages with full flexibility from pay-as-yougo to full seasonal membership.

Scott Harrell, CEO and President, Infoblox

Infoblox Inc. the company that delivers a simplified, cloud- enabled networking and security platform for improved performance and protection, makes several announcements today, as the company takes a strong position on why networking and security teams must join forces in the fight against cybercrime.

New critical security features and a refreshed brand identity reflect the company’s strategy, confidence and business focus, empowering customers to detect and respond to critical threats to help their businesses thrive.

“Infoblox is the only company that can provide real-time visibility and control over who and what connects across networks and multi-cloud environments to help customers build safer, more resilient environments,” said Scott Harrell, CEO and President, Infoblox.

“By bringing NetOps and SecOps teams together with shared visibility, data context, automation and control, they can prevent malware communications and pinpoint the source of threats, taking the performance and protection to new heights,” he added.

Businesses today are increasingly adopting hybrid and multi-cloud environments to stay competitive, creating additional complexity and expanding attack surfaces.

Not surprising, 60% of organizations have suffered at least one data breach in the last 12 months with an average $2M loss per event due to these breaches, according to Infoblox’s 2023 Global State of Cybersecurity report. In addition, 81% of respondents identified email/phishing as a top attack vector according to Infoblox’s findings.

Infoblox’s new Lookalike Domain Monitoring capability identifies sites attempting to impersonate company brands that are increasingly used to deceive partners and customers with phishing, malvertising and similar attacks.

This comes just after introducing Infoblox’s new emerging threat intelligence feeds that provide indicators of malicious intent to stop attacks before they happen. With these enhancements, Infoblox delivers a better and safer customer experience.

Infoblox analyzes over 70 billion DNS queries a day. In a new lookalike domain report, to be released at RSAC 2023, Infoblox demonstrates that while the use of lookalike domains by malicious actors continues to persist, the techniques have substantially advanced in 2022, targeting every sector, playing a key role in complex cyberattacks such as those used to bypass multi-factor authentication (MFA) measures.

"As a best-of-breed DNS layer security solution provider, Infoblox continues to pioneer advancements in the use of DNS as a source of unique threat intelligence and as a powerful enforcement point,” said Harrell.

“We are the first and only DNS Security vendor to protect against the use of lookalike domains by attackers. These attacks are increasing in sophistication and prevalence, making specialized solutions not just nice to have, but necessary to secure enterprises and their users," he added.

In a world that never stops, Infoblox is focused on helping customers build more responsive networks to keep up with the pace of digital transformation, detect hidden threats and stop attacks earlier, powering security services with contextrich network intelligence.

COMPANY WILL EXTEND UNIVERSAL CLOUD OPERATING MODEL TO CONSISTENTLY RUN APPS AND DATA ANYWHERE

Nutanix (NASDAQ: NTNX), a leader in hybrid multicloud computing, today announced Nutanix Central, a clouddelivered solution that provides a single console for visibility, monitoring, and management across public cloud, onpremises, hosted or edge infrastructure. This will extend the universal cloud operating model of the Nutanix Cloud Platform to break down silos and simplify consistently managing apps and data anywhere.

Most organizations today are struggling with the complexity of managing an increasing number of environments across on-premises, public cloud and the edge, leading to management silos, costs, security risks and more,

according to the Enterprise Cloud Index. Organizations looking for a seamless hybrid multicloud experience require a universal cloud operating model, meaning consistent management across endpoints, integrated security, self-service and on-demand resources, governance and full license portability that allow customers to run apps and data anywhere. The Nutanix Central solution will greatly simplify management at a large, federated scale across endpoints.

“The reality for most enterprise customers today is that they’re managing a vast number of applications across multiple environments. This is leading to significant management

challenges that are only going to increase as hybrid multicloud deployments grow,” said Thomas Cornely, SVP, Product Management at Nutanix. “With Nutanix Central, we will extend our hybrid multicloud platform to deliver a truly universal cloud operating model to include consistent management across public clouds, on-premises, hosted and edge environments.”

Nutanix Central will provide clouddelivered unified management and reporting of the entire Nutanix environment distributed across private, public, and edge clouds from a single place. It will also support multi-domain use cases including federated identity

and access management (IAM), global projects and categories, global fleet management, all enabling IT teams to deliver self-service infrastructure at scale while remaining in control of governance and security.

From the Nutanix Central dashboard, customers will access domain and cluster-level metrics, including capacity utilization and alert summary statistics, to get a quick overview of the state of each domain.

This functionality will also enable seamless navigation to individual domains, based on individual user rolebased access control (RBAC), across all domains registered.

Additionally, customers will be able to discover, deploy, and manage Nutanix solutions and interoperable partner solutions. Nutanix Central will be available to customers as part of their Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure (NCI) license.

Organizations struggling with managing applications and data across environments, including multiple public clouds, on-premises, hosted datacenter, and edge endpoints, will benefit from Nutanix Central and a universal cloud operating model.

For example, an organization with hosted datacenters in multiple locations, as well as different public cloud vendors across geographies will be able to enable a centralized governance and security program.

Similarly, retailers with a large number of stores would greatly benefit from having one control plane to manage edge locations.

In addition to Nutanix Central, the company today also announced new capabilities in the Nutanix Cloud Platform to support higher performant and more secure applications and data – all of which will be managed through Nutanix Central. Specifically,

the improvements enable independent scaling of compute-only nodes running database virtual machines on either AHV or ESXi, to tune performance and reduce total cost of ownership, and the introduction of high-performance storage-only nodes.

Nutanix will also deliver enhanced software-defined networking and simplified micro-segmentation capabilities across customer, partner, and hyperscaler-owned networks by using Flow Virtual Networking (FVN) capabilities and Flow Network Security (FNS) features, allowing customers to exercise defense-in-depth for greater cyber resilience.

Nutanix Central and new functionality in Flow Network Security are under development. New performance capabilities in the Nutanix Cloud Platform and new functionality in Flow Virtual Networking are available to customers now.

- Thomas Cornely, SVP, Product Management at Nutanix
THE REALITY FOR MOST ENTERPRISE CUSTOMERS TODAY IS THAT THEY’RE MANAGING A VAST NUMBER OF APPLICATIONS ACROSS MULTIPLE ENVIRONMENTS. THIS IS LEADING TO SIGNIFICANT MANAGEMENT CHALLENGES THAT ARE ONLY GOING TO INCREASE AS HYBRID MULTICLOUD DEPLOYMENTS GROW,

Sydney, the sparkling gem of Australia's eastern coast, offers a captivating blend of natural wonders, iconic landmarks, cultural riches, and vibrant urban life. In the span of three days, I embarked years ago with my family on an unforgettable journey through Sydney's city center, enchanting parks, bustling shopping areas, fascinating museums, and sunkissed beaches.

As Sydney is always a stopover destination for me as I head back home to Fiji, there are some places that are always on the list no matter how many times you visit this enchanting city.

We highlight the must-visit attractions that make Sydney a dream destination for travelers around the globe.

I start my visits by (re-) discovering Sydney's City Center Sydney's city center, with its towering skyscrapers and historic sites. It is the beating heart of the metropolis with a must visit to the world-famous Sydney Opera House, an architectural marvel that graces the shores of Sydney Harbour. A guided tour inside provides a fascinating glimpse into its design and history.

From there, I stroll along the lively Circular Quay, where ferries traverse the harbor and street performers entertain passersby.

Just a stone's throw away lies The Rocks, a historic neighborhood filled with cobblestone streets, charming pubs, and delightful artisan shops. Exploring its markets, I love unearthing unique souvenirs and trying delectable street food.

I also suggest ascending the Sydney Tower Eye, an observation deck that offers breathtaking panoramic views of the city. The mesmerizing sunset over Sydney's skyline is a sight to behold, creating lasting memories of my first time in this vibrant city.

The next day, embrace nature in Sydney's parks and visit beaches as Sydney's natural beauty is legendary, and no visit is complete without experiencing its breathtaking parks and pristine beaches.Visit the Royal Botanic Garden, an oasis of serenity nestled beside the Sydney Opera House. The lush landscapes, vibrant flora, and tranquil walking trails provide the perfect escape from the urban hustle.

Nearby, the Australian Museum has an impressive collection of indigenous art, natural history exhibits, and interactive displays.

Retail therapy and Sydney's shopping scene is as diverse as its attractions.I dedicate ample time to exploring the vibrant shopping areas and immersing myself in its rich cultural offerings. Pitt Street Mall, a busy pedestrian precinct, is a shopaholic's paradise, featuring flagship stores, luxury boutiques, and international brands.

The Australian National Maritime Museum, located nearby, provides a fascinating window into the nation's seafaring history, housing impressive vessels and interactive exhibitions.

Before bidding adieu to Sydney, I like to visit the Art Gallery of New South Wales, a treasure trove of artistic masterpieces from both Australian and international artists. From Aboriginal art to contemporary installations, the gallery showcases a diverse range of styles and narratives.

WORLD'S FIRST CENTRAL FLOATING TOURBILLON KROSS STUDIO’S KS 05 TIMEPIECE COLLECTION

Kross Studio launches a groundbreaking new KS 05 Timepiece Collection, marking two significant firsts for the renegade Swiss manufacturer: it is the first collection issued solely by design studio outside of any partnerships or collaborations; and its central floating tourbillon movement heralds a worldfirst technical advancement, the first of Its kind In the luxury watch industry.

Since the brand's founding in 2020 by Marco Tedeschi, Kross Studio has made significant strides in the world of luxury timepieces, shaking up traditional notions with the manufacturer's radical designs and skillful yet wholly unique new applications of Swiss craftsmanship.

In an impressively short span of time, Kross Studio forged a pioneering

partnership with Lucasfilm Ltd. and the entertainment giant's beloved Star Wars franchise, becoming the first luxury watch brand to do so.

Kross Studio followed this remarkable debut by launching yet more stunning pop-culture inspired collector sets in collaboration with other global entertainment titans, Including Warner Bros. Discovery, HBO and DC Comics. Over the course of these projects the brand unveiled six distinctive watch movements, each tailored precisely to their intended timepieces.

The KS 05 collection showcases Kross Studio's passion for exceptional engineering with its striking and uniquely constructed movement. At its heart is the caliber KS 7'005, a manualwinding central floating tourbillon – a

world-first achievement in which Kross Studio takes great pride. Comprising 220 components and 27 jewels, this movement operates at a frequency of 21,600 bph (beats per hour), or 3 Hz, and boasts a power reserve of 120 hours or 5 days, ensuring optimal accuracy and longevity.

The diameter of the barrel, wider than the watch's radius, is placed on the central axis of the movement and the tourbillon sits atop it, offering a sublime view of its intricate mechanics. The barrel, the tourbillon cage, and the balance wheel are all co-axial, ensuring smooth operation.

The floating tourbillon, a feat of horological prowess, showcases a cage crafted from grade 5 titanium, chosen for its high strength and light weight.

WATCHES | 46 | Global Trend Monitor

The result is an ultra-lightweight tourbillon cage. The time display mechanism operates peripherally, working around the barrel and the tourbillon mechanism. The peripheral display orbits 360 degrees around the tourbillon, and the reduction ratio between the hour and minute is achieved through a planetary system mounted on two ceramic ball bearings.

The case is made from Grade 5 titanium, a bio-compatible material that surpasses stainless steel in terms of strength and durability, underlining Kross Studio’s commitment to using the most advanced materials in the industry.

The KS 05 collection offers a trio of striking and precious dial variations, each unique iteration composed of several elegant and functional outer and inner sub dials. The dials are crafted from black or blue aventurine glass or natural stones

including turquoise, jade, and obsidian, among others.

With its new KS 7'005 caliber, the heart of the new KS 05 timepiece, Kross Studio continues to redefine the luxury timepiece industry. This manual-winding central floating tourbillon, a world-first, combines exceptional engineering and meticulous craftsmanship.

The KS 05 Collection encapsulates Kross Studio's aptitude for revolutionary timekeeping while maintaining the core principles of traditional watchmaking.

This collection heralds a transformative era in luxury timepieces, effortlessly merging artistic craftsmanship, pioneering engineering, and distinctive personal expression. Each variant is restricted to 10 numbered pieces, rendering each timepiece a limitededition masterwork.

NEW JIDU SHOWROOM IN SHANGHAI WORLD OF JIDU

JIDU is a joint venture between Chinese tech giant Baidu and car manufacturer Geely. In 2021, the company made history with the launch of its hyper-intelligent, AI-driven, autonomous ROBOCARs. We were commissioned to design the world’s first showroom for the brand to showcase all JIDU’s latest models. Our goal was to create an immersive portal that teleports visitors straight into the JIDU universe.

The showroom consists of three areas on the first floor of a luxury shopping centre in Lujiazui Financial Centre, which can be accessed from the outside as well as through the shopping centre. A vibrant JIDU logo on the exterior façade arouses curiosity for the brand and draws visitors into the world of JIDU. The two entrances are connected by a tunnel that displays a large-scale multimedia installation. Moreover, the digital content and the

ART & DESIGN | 54 | Global Trend Monitor

lighting of the portal are constantly in motion, responding to the movements of visitors.

The journey into the future begins in the café, a cubic foyer with two openings that reveal a first glimpse of the different ROBOCAR models. Here, customers are welcomed by JIDU brand ambassadors with a refreshing drink before coming into contact with the cars for the first time. Inspired by the metallic finish of the ROBOCARs, the display area also has a metallic appearance.

Against this background, the vehicle models are presented as approachable objects of desire. Visitors experience the tingle of encountering true pioneering technology for the first time – and arriving in the future.

The event area offers a forum for events, film presentations and exchange. With square grids on the wall and ceiling and cube seating dotted about, we play on a pixel theme that evokes associations with computer games, technologies and AI.

The journey continues in the studio area, where potential buyers can delve deeper into the world of JIDU. Car parts,

colour samples and material variations are presented at an oversized table in characteristic JIDU purple.

Future ROBOCAR owners can individualise their car here, which is projected live on a large screen before their eyes. The journey

ends in the VIP salon and in a one-to-one sales talk with a brand ambassador. It is only a matter of time before buyers can watch their ROBOCAR leave the garage here on a large screen, drive up to the showroom on autopilot and be ready to take them on their virgin drive.

NEW RIVA 82’ DIVA

THE FLYBRIDGE WITH ENDLESS OUTDOOR SPACE

Creative genius never rests and Riva, a globally famed nautical icon, has been a perfect demonstration of this for over 180 years. A creative forge turning out iconic boats from 8 to 90 meters in length, every one unique but all sharing the signature aquamarine blue that makes them unmistakeable, Riva once again shows its extraordinary creative vitality by launching Riva 82’ Diva, the new flybridge built to open a new chapter in the history of the category.

Launched in La Spezia, at the shipyard

where 76-to-130-foot models are built, the Riva 82’ Diva joins the sumptuous range of flybridges –including huge successes like the Riva 90’ Argo, Riva 102’ Corsaro Super, Riva 110’ Dolcevita and Riva 130’ Bellissima – bringing to market not only a new boat size but also a revolutionary approach to the use of space.

Like the splendid creations that have preceded it in the last 27 years, Riva 82' Diva bears the unmistakeable mark of Mauro Micheli and Sergio

Beretta, founders of Officina Italiana Design, in collaboration with the Strategic Product Committee led by Piero Ferrari and the Ferretti Group Engineering Department.

Riva 82’ Diva offers a new concept of both interior and exterior space, in which each environment is masterfully designed to optimise its use of space and functionality.

The outdoor areas are undoubtedly the key focus of this yacht, designed to put guests in close contact with the

YACHT
| 58 | Global Trend Monitor

sea and let them enjoy the cruising experience in spaces of unprecedented dimensions for the category, starting with the 40-square-meter flybridge, one of the largest for this size of yacht.

Thanks to these generous dimensions, each living area on Riva 82’ Diva flybridge has its own dedicated space: the lounge with dinette and bar in the centre, protected by a carbon fibre hard top with glass panels, the sunbathing area forward

and another lounge area aft. Down on the main deck is the boat’s main attraction, the spacious stern beach club characterised by two large bulwarks that swing down to create lateral terraces, increasing the area’s width by 3 meters.

In the centre of the beach club, under the large sundeck, a garage can accommodate a jet tender of up to 3.45 m and a seabob. Forward of the beach club is the raised cockpit fitted with facing sea-view sofas, providing an unprecedented living area of nearly 35 square metres.

The interiors offer new solutions combining the best in terms of design and comfort: in the saloon, the cockpit-level living space precedes the panoramic dining area, which is raised to mark out the settings visually without actually separating them.

The galley, which leads to the helm station and, via the port-side external walkway, to the forward lounge area, is at the forward end of the main deck and is designed either to be closed off from or to open out onto the dining area in order to create a seamless space.

Even the stair well connecting to the flybridge is part of the decor thanks to glass walls that dissolve the visual barrier between interior and exterior.

The lower deck has 4 cabins – 3 guest cabins with ensuite bathroom and the full-beam owner’s cabin aft –accommodating up to 8 guests.

The crew quarters - two separate cabins with a total of three bedsare amidships and accessed by a dedicated walkway on the side of the superstructure to guarantee complete privacy for both the owner and guests.

With an overall length of more than 25 meters and a maximum beam of over 6 meters, the agile beauty of Riva 82’ Diva is simply unique.

The unmistakeable features of her predecessors – such as the low and sporty profile of the superstructure –work with innovative new solutions, like the higher and safer lateral gunwales with painted composite profiles instead of traditional stainless steel handrails – to breathe life into a yacht without precedent.

On the new Riva 82’ Diva, the owner can decide whether to install a pair of MAN V12 1800 engines delivering a top speed of 29 knots and a cruising speed of 26 or two MAN V12 1900 engines for a top speed of 31 knots and a cruising speed of 27 (provisional data).

The first unit will make its official debut at the Cannes Yachting Festival 2023.

THE UK NEEDS HYDROGEN TO ACHIEVE ITS NET ZERO GOALS

The UK Hydrogen Strategy estimates that to meet Net Zero aims by 2050, hydrogen will make up 20-35% of the UK’s final energy demand (250-460 TWh a year). Hydrogen therefore has a critical role to play in the decarbonisation of industry, power, heat and transport. Is the UK really doing everything it can to maintain momentum and realise hydrogen opportunities?

Tevva’s area of expertise - transport - will have a critical role to play in our country’s decarbonisation goals. Worldwide around a fifth of CO2 emissions comes from trucks, and both McKinsey and the Hydrogen Council believe the most competitive use of hydrogen lies in decarbonising trucks.

Trucks using batteries or hydrogen fuel cells instead of diesel engines will indeed need to make up the vast majority of new sales by 2040 under plans to reduce CO2 emissions from medium- and heavy-duty vehicles. Yet only around 700 trucks that run on batteries or fuel cells were sold in Europe last year - about 0.2% of the total.

The good news is that the economics of owning and operating electric and hydrogen trucks, their total cost of ownership or TCO, are improving rapidly. And with diesel truck prices set to increase with Euro 7, electrification of our sector could happen sooner than previously thought.

Yet there are still serious challenges around the lack of hydrogen refuelling stations and the fact that most fleet operators have no experience of hydrogen, in addition many hydrogen suppliers have no experience of truck fleets.

As an early adopter and developer of hydrogen technology, Tevva is playing an important role in demonstrating the potential for hydrogen electric trucks.

We showcased our concept prototype 7.5t and 19t hydrogen electric trucks at the IAA in Hanover last year and have been encouraged by the high level of interest in these dual energy vehicles.

MOTORING
| 66 | Global Trend Monitor

In January we took the 7.5t prototype on a ‘border run’ to Berwick-on-Tweed, England’s northernmost town. On the way up we stopped at an Element 2 refuelling station in Teesside, and the return journey saw us cover almost 350 miles without needing to stop at all. This was made possible by the truck’s hydrogen fuel cell which tops up the range-extended vehicle’s lithium battery when needed.

Still, there is an urgent need for a more comprehensive hydrogen refuelling network in the UK, and the speed and scalability of hydrogen refuelling systems will be crucial to adoption while keeping costs under control.

Element 2 is doing great work in this space. They are in the process of putting a skeleton network in place with 100 miles between each refuelling station, giving confidence to any haulage company that is considering hydrogen electric trucks.

Today the UK has pockets of Megawatt (MW)-scale hydrogen activities that are evolving alongside ambitious proposals for Gigawatt (GW)-scale low carbon hydrogen clusters by 2030. Learning from initiatives in Europe, Asia and North America, as well as the UK’s own experiences, coordination is vital to minimise costs and maximise the benefits of hydrogen infrastructure.

The opportunity is now for UK central, regional and local Government bodies and industry to plan and invest jointly

to grow hydrogen transport systems holistically.

The UK does have a supportive and growing hydrogen ecosystem with many public bodies, new and established companies, universities, and others building their hydrogen capabilities and strategies.

However, the experience of individual organisations and maturity of crossindustry collaboration in dealing with hydrogen systems is typically orders of magnitude lower than for traditional fossil fuel systems.

Therefore, in the short term early adopters need more support to overcome the limited infrastructure and complexity of supply chains, higher unit costs, and long or uncertain lead times for hydrogen products and services.

As low-carbon hydrogen becomes cheaper and more widely available, hydrogen refuelling has the potential to become as simple as diesel refuelling is today. We are committed to making hydrogen convenient, affordable and sustainable for truck fleet operators. Achieving the UK’s net zero goals depends on it.

MASTERING AUDIENCE TARGETING THE POWER OF PRECISION IN PR

If there is one thing I have learnt being in the PR and media landscape for over 20 years in this region, it’s the importance of targeting the right audience for clients.

Being with the top two PR agencies in the UAE and then working under the guidance of an ex-CEO of Saatchi and Saatchi drove home the message of targeting the right people early in my PR career. Later, as an in-house PR for over 6 years

in a creative environment, the same message was key - In the realm of public relations (PR), one of the most essential techniques for success is audience targeting. Gone are the days of mass messaging in hopes of reaching the right people.

Today, precision is key. By identifying and understanding your target audience, PR professionals can craft tailored messages that

resonate, create meaningful connections, and drive desired outcomes.

In this blog post, I will explore the significance of audience targeting as a PR technique and delve into the benefits it offers both from experiences in my PR career and now as a journalist supporting up to four PR agencies regularly with their messaging to media and stakeholders.

DEFINING YOUR TARGET AUDIENCE

Before embarking on any PR campaign, it is crucial to define your target audience. Start by analyzing demographics, psychographics, and behavioral characteristics of your potential audience. Who are they? What are their interests, values, and pain points? By answering these questions, you can develop a clear picture of your ideal audience, enabling you to tailor your PR efforts effectively.

PERSONALIZED MESSAGING

I love getting PR emails from agencies in the UAE and noticing that what I started 20 years ago in my email to media is still being used today by PR professionals when they are messaging me…right down to finishing the email with Cheers instead of Regards or a formal closing farewell.

It used to be my trademark and automatically put media at ease and made them feel the laid-back island vibe I became known for. Once you have a deep understanding of your target audience, you can craft messages that resonate with them on a personal level. Personalization fosters a sense of connection, making your audience more receptive to your communication and helps build lasting relationships. I still know some of my media and PR friends from 22 years ago.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT CHANNELS

Audience targeting allows you to identify the most effective channels for reaching your desired audience. Not every platform or medium will be equally effective for all audiences. By understanding your target audience's media consumption habits, you can allocate your PR resources strategically. Whether it's social media, traditional media, influencers, or industry-specific platforms, you can reach your audience where they are most likely to engage.

ENHANCED MEDIA RELATIONS

Audience targeting is a game-changer in media relations. By tailoring your pitches and press releases to the preferences and interests of specific journalists or media outlets, you increase your chances of securing coverage. I still get cold ‘Dear Editor’ emails from PR people I do not know and that goes into the trash right away as they have not bothered to know what my beat is or establish a personal connection.

A personalized approach demonstrates that you have taken the time to understand their beat and audience, thus establishing stronger relationships with the media and increasing the likelihood of positive coverage.

MEASURABLE RESULTS

One of the greatest advantages of audience targeting in PR is the ability to measure results accurately. By focusing your efforts on specific segments, you can track the impact of your campaigns more precisely. In PR, there is no facility to buy fake followers, fake comments or bought likes – the results on display in reports show credible news sites, newspapers and magazines that have an established local audience who can go into your shop and buy the product you promote. The robots used in social media do not necessarily need your designer bag or food product.

Hence, in today's PR landscape, audience targeting is a powerful technique that allows PR professionals to connect with their intended audience on a deeper level.

By defining your target audience, personalizing your messaging, choosing the right channels, enhancing media relations, and measuring results, you can drive impactful PR campaigns that yield desired outcomes. Remember, precision is the key to success in the ever-evolving world of PR, and audience targeting is the compass that guides your way.

TAKING A CENTRALIZED APPROACH TO CLOUD SECURITY

Cloud adoption is holding steady as organizations find novel methods to communicate with customers and move forward with digital initiatives that require the greater agility and flexibility that the cloud provides.

According to Fortinet’s 2023 Cloud Security report, the rate at which enterprises are shifting workloads to the cloud is remaining consistent, even with a leveling off of year-over-year cloud adoption, compared to last year’s report. Almost 40% of those polled claimed to have moved more than half of their workloads to the cloud already, and 58% expect to do so within the next 12 to 18 months.

While using the cloud has many advantages for businesses, it also brings new difficulties that security teams of all sizes must be aware of and address.

EVALUATING THE BIGGEST CLOUD SECURITY CHALLENGES

Organizations have been slowing down or modifying their cloud adoption plans due to rising expenses, compliance demands, the complexity of hybrid and multi-cloud environments, lower visibility, and a shortage of experienced professionals.

With 95% of surveyed enterprises worried about security in public cloud environments, cloud security is still a major concern. According to 43% of respondents, adopting the public cloud as opposed to an on-premises environment entails greater risk.

The ongoing shortage of cloud security personnel, the expansion of compliance regulations, and the pronounced lack of visibility and control, particularly in hybrid and multi-cloud settings, all fall under the category of cloud security problems.

According to 59% of cybersecurity specialists, configuration error continues to pose the greatest threat to cloud security. Sensitive data exfiltration (51%), insecure interfaces/APIs (51%), and unauthorized access (49%) follow closely behind.

Some of the other main issues that businesses are dealing with have less to do with technology and more to do with people and processes.

Despite a slight decline from the previous year, the perpetual lack of skills and people (37%), which continues to be the biggest barrier to faster adoption, is still extremely important. Data security concerns (29%), legal and regulatory compliance (30%), and integration with current IT infrastructures (27%) come in close succession.

GETTING A GRIP ON CLOUD SECURITY

There is evidence of some positive development. In spite of economic challenges, most enterprises (60%) are upping their cloud security spending by an average of 33%. Security experts are making effective use of their cloud budgets to address the risks and threats that are most significant to the organization. Avoiding configuration errors is the top priority (51%), which may come as no surprise, but protecting apps that have already migrated to the cloud is number two (48%).

Visibility is the goal. Unsurprisingly, almost all respondents (90%) think having a single dashboard and one cloud security platform to consistently and thoroughly protect data throughout their cloud environment is helpful, given the difficulties with security visibility and the shortage of cyber talent.

HOW A CENTRALIZED APPROACH CAN HELP

Organizations can overcome many of these obstacles using a cybersecurity mesh platform model, which offers centralized visibility, automation, and administration across cloud platforms.

As a result, security teams can share intelligence more quickly and provide better response times. More consistent security policies translate to improved security effectiveness, especially in hybrid and multi-cloud deployments. Leaders can improve efficiency, lessen

the effects of the skills gap, and boost the efficacy of their team as a whole.

The advantages of cloud computing lead to key business outcomes, and this year, responsiveness to customer needs (52%) overtakes faster time to market (48%). Smart businesses that incorporate cybersecurity into their cloud migration also see its worth in reduced risk (42%), enhanced security (42%), and cost savings (41%).

NAVIGATE CLOUD SECURITY CHALLENGES

To navigate the complex landscape of cloud security, organizations should adopt a proactive and centralized approach. By embracing a cybersecurity mesh platform model, businesses can achieve centralized visibility, automation, and administration across their cloud environments. This enables security teams to share intelligence swiftly, respond effectively to threats, and optimize their overall efficiency.

As enterprises continue to prioritize customer responsiveness and faster time to market, incorporating cybersecurity into cloud migration becomes paramount. The advantages of cloud computing are clear, including reduced risk, enhanced security, and cost savings. By addressing the challenges of cloud security head-on and leveraging the power of centralized platforms, organizations can unlock the full potential of the cloud while safeguarding their critical assets.

GET PERFUMED SCENT LAYERING FOR MAXIMUM EFFECT

Scent layering is a technique used to create a unique and personalized fragrance experience by combining two or more perfumes. The number of times I make my mum spray the scent in the air so I can walk through it instead of her spraying directly on my skin is countless. Different people have different ways of using their perfumes.

At my home, mum likes to spray the fragrance on the skin to see how the fragrance works with her while I like to waft through the scent after spraying it in front of me.

Here are some tips to help you master the art of scent layering:

START WITH A CLEAN SLATE

Begin by showering or taking a bath, and avoid using strongly scented body washes or lotions before layering your fragrances.

CHOOSE COMPLEMENTARY SCENTS

Select two or three perfumes that complement each other. Choose scents that have similar base notes or share a common theme, such as floral, citrus, or woody.

APPLY IN THE RIGHT ORDER

Start with the lightest fragrance and then move on to the stronger scents. This will help prevent one fragrance from overpowering the others.

APPLY STRATEGICALLY

Apply the fragrances to the pulse points, such as the wrists, neck, and behind the ears. You can also apply the scent to your hair, clothing, or even your scarf or handkerchief.

EXPERIMENT AND HAVE FUN

There are no hard and fast rules when it comes to scent layering, so experiment

with different combinations and find what works best for you. Have fun and enjoy creating your own signature scent!

CONSIDER THE SEASON AND OCCASION

Consider the event when layering scents. For instance, during the summer, lighter, fresher fragrances may be more appropriate, while deeper, more complex scents may be better for a formal evening event.

DON'T OVERDO IT

Be careful not to overdo it with the layering. Too many fragrances can create a confusing and overwhelming scent. Stick to a maximum of three fragrances at a time.

By following these tips, you can create a unique fragrance that reflects your personality and style. Experiment and have fun with scent layering!
