This issue I am excited to interview a woman and a friend I admire most from my university days – Dr. Sarifa Alonto Younes. Two decades after studying together, our paths crossed and it's exciting to see Sarifa as a force to be reckoned with—a global leader whose relentless dedication to education, entrepreneurship, and philanthropy has transformed countless lives across the world.

EXPLORING SLEEP FACTORS

Promoting Restful Sleep in the MENA region

CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THE IMPACT OF SLEEP DEPRIVATION ON INDIVIDUALS AND SOCIETY?

Sleep deprivation has significant consequences for both individuals and society as a whole. Research studies have shown that sleep deprivation can lead to decreased productivity, impaired cognitive function, increased risk of accidents, and negative effects on overall health and well-being.

It also contributes to societal costs, as mentioned in the sleep study supported by P&G Health and Ipsos. Addressing sleep deprivation is crucial for promoting individual health and productivity.

WHAT FACTORS CAN CONTRIBUTE TO POOR SLEEP QUALITY?

Sleep issues vary widely, each associated with specific symptoms and prevalence. Disruptions due to shift work, jet lag, and irregular timings affect 30-36% of the population, primarily causing sleeplessness and tiredness. Night terrors and sleepwalking are less common, impacting 1.5-3%, and often involve involuntary movements and hallucinations.

Excessive sleepiness affects 15-18% and leads to drowsiness and irritability. Snoring and sleep apnea, very common issues, affect up to 30.5% and involve symptoms like snoring and gasping. Finally, issues such as leg cramps and restless syndrome (4-6% prevalence) also contribute to sleep disturbances, causing discomfort and headaches.

Poor sleep quality can be influenced by several factors, including lifestyle choices such as excessive electronic device usage before bedtime, irregular sleep schedules, and environmental factors like noise or light pollution. A 10% increase in the number of people using their cellphones in bed was reported compared to the previous year.

In the Asia Pacific region, 78% of respondents indicated that this habit results in shorter sleep durations and a delay in falling asleep compared to their desired bedtime . Additionally, factors like high stress levels, certain medical conditions, and medication side effects can also affect sleep quality.

A Toluna qualitative survey conducted with >400 consumers in Saudi Arabia in September 20202, revealed that about 2 out of 3 Saudis (~70%) experience sleeplessness, including difficulty falling asleep, waking up at night and waking up tired in the morning. Yet over 50% did not take any action for their sleep deprivation.

For Saudis, a good night’s sleep helps in waking up energized and in a good mood, along with the body feeling refreshed and recovered. However, most Saudi consumers

only go to sleep at midnight with an average sleep of 5 to 6 hours on weekdays.

HOW CAN WE ASSESS SLEEP QUALITY ACCURATELY?

Sleep health is determined by several key factors, including sleep efficiency, with a target of 85% or higher indicating good quality rest. Other crucial aspects are minimal sleep disturbances and a sleep latency period within 30 minutes, which reflects the ease of falling asleep. Achieving sufficient sleep is crucial, with adults generally needing between 7 to 9 hours per night for optimal health and wellbeing. A low level of wakefulness after sleep onset, known as 'WASO,' is equally important to ensure sleep quality and restoration.

Together, these attributes are integral to achieving healthy sleep patterns. To assess sleep quality, researchers and healthcare professionals use various methods. One commonly used tool is the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) developed by Buysse et al. (1989). The PSQI is a questionnaire that measures multiple aspects of sleep quality, including sleep duration, sleep disturbances, and overall satisfaction with sleep.

Additionally, objective measures like polysomnography and actigraphy are used in research and clinical settings to provide detailed information on sleep patterns and disturbances.

ARE THERE ANY REGIONAL DIFFERENCES IN SLEEP PATTERNS AND SLEEP DEPRIVATION?

Yes, regional differences in sleep patterns and sleep deprivation have been observed. Cultural factors and lifestyle choices can influence sleep patterns in different regions. In the Asia Pacific region, 84% of respondents reported using their phones in bed. The survey found that 78% of respondents experienced shorter sleep durations and had difficulty falling asleep. 2 out of 3 Saudis (~70%) experience sleeplessness, including difficulty falling asleep, waking up at night and waking up tired in the morning.

Additionally, factors like population density, urbanization, and socioeconomic conditions can impact sleep quality. It is important to study and address these regional differences to develop targeted interventions for improving sleep health.

WHO IS AT HIGHER RISK OF SLEEP ISSUES?

Certain groups are at an elevated risk for sleep issues. Older adults often face sleep challenges due to age-related changes in sleep patterns. Shift workers, especially those on night shifts, experience decreased melatonin secretion, which can disrupt the circadian rhythm and lead to varying sleep concerns. Students

frequently confront poor sleep quality owing to stress, academic pressures, anxiety, and irregular sleep schedules.

Individuals with mental health disorders, such as depression, may have disrupted melatonin secretion patterns, exacerbating sleep issues and their overall condition. Females report higher rates of insomnia due to hormonal factors and sociocultural stressors.

Lastly, persons in abusive environments endure chronic stress that significantly affects sleep quality, compromising their ability to get restful sleep. Each group's unique circumstances contribute to a heightened susceptibility to a range of sleeprelated problems.

WHAT IS THE ROLE OF MELATONIN IN PROMOTING SLEEP?

Melatonin is a hormone produced by the body that plays a key role in regulating sleep-wake cycles. It is released in response to darkness and helps to signal the body that it is time to sleep. Additionally, melatonin supplements are often used as a sleep aid for individuals with sleep difficulties, such as insomnia. Differentiation is the process of

Some luxury fashion brands are famous for their iconic trench coats, which they constantly reinvent with new fabrics, colors, and patterns.

• SERVICE DIFFERENTIATION

Luxury brands can differentiate their services by providing exceptional and personalized customer care, before, during, and after the purchase. Some luxury fashion brands offer concierge services that can arrange travel, accommodation, and entertainment for their customers. Some provide beauty consultation services that can help customers find the best products and techniques for their skin type and preferences. Some jewelry brands offer a lifetime warranty and free cleaning and repair for their jewelry.

• PRICE DIFFERENTIATION

Luxury brands can differentiate their price by charging a premium that reflects their quality, exclusivity, and prestige. For example, some automobile companies charge high prices for their cars, which are limited in production and highly coveted by collectors and enthusiasts. OLYMPICS WILL INCREASE EXPOSURE TO CYBERTHREATS

The Paris 2024 Summer Olympic Games gets underway on July 26 this year. Securing the IT architecture of the Olympic Games is no easy matter. It is complex, built on a cloud-native approach with several hundred interconnected applications.

In terms of volume, billions of items of data will be transiting via the websites and applications. All the more exposed to attackers. But what about applications?

More than half (57%) of Internet traffic is now made up of API requests. These APIs represent an attack surface that is often overlooked and neglected by many organizations.

The first challenge for companies is to have a complete and accurate API inventory. Cloudflare has found that its customers have a significant lack of visibility over their public API exposure. Indeed, based on Machine Learning and heuristics, the integrated discovery tool identified an average of 30.7% of public APIs not referenced by organizations. Unlike other API reports in the industry, Cloudflare’s is not based on user surveys, but on actual traffic data.

Cloudflare's API Discovery tool combines two approaches: the identification of known API tokens with automatic machine learning analysis of all incoming HTTP traffic, enabling the detection of these missing APIs. This complete visibility is an integral part of the API Gateway product, which also helps to manage and secure Internet access points.

These undetected ghost APIs represent a major risk. If APIs are the essential plumbing of the Internet, they can also become a prime

target for attackers. They therefore need appropriate protection.

Indeed, if the process of documenting and inventorying APIs for the attention of security teams is not ensured, they become ghost APIs, functional in the production environment, but unbeknownst to the company. This is where security issues begin to emerge.

Beyond inventory, securing APIs raises a number of challenges. Rate limiting, a common practice, is not always the most effective. In addition, APIs remain vulnerable to classic attacks such as SQL injection or DDoS attacks. But one of the biggest risks comes from authentication and authorization flaws: many APIs do not properly verify legitimate access to data, making them particularly vulnerable.

To guard against this, Cloudflare recommends 4 main measures: impose authentication on all public APIs; strictly limit throughput with elaborate rules; block abnormal volumes of sensitive data; prevent malicious actors from ignoring valid API sequences. This amounts to adopting a positive security strategy, which only lets known, compliant traffic through.

A final observation: API traffic now follows the rhythm of human activity - periods of peak sales, major events or vacations - due to the ever-increasing use of APIs by the general public. There's no doubt that in this Olympic year, this will be particularly the case, whether it involves a spectator, tourist, journalist or professional. The purely machine-tomachine view of APIs is no longer valid.

For optimum security, organizations need to take a holistic view of the protection of their Internet exposure against all threats, whatever the resources exposed (API, website, user, infrastructure). Preserving visibility and control has never been more difficult.

Rather than multiplying independent solutions each securing one element or one threat, Cloudflare's connectivity cloud provides a single protection on all threats linked to the Internet exposure of resources. API protection being just one particular case of exposure dealt with in an integrated chain of protection. By way of example, Carrefour was able to consolidate 6 solutions on Cloudflare, optimizing costs by 50% and improving incident resolution times by 75%.

2024 will be a special year for the application world: an increase in application complexity, with 73% of application managers saying that security requirements interfered with their productivity and capacity for innovation; amplification of risks linked to the rise of generative AI; growth in fraudulent attacks on API business logic; the need for reinforced governance with the entry into force of the first standards such as PCI DSS on API security.

Against this backdrop, and in this Olympic year, combining API protection with protection of all Internet exposures appears to be an essential prerequisite for the applications of companies involved in the Olympic Games, whether in the strict sense as partners, or in the broader sense, such as players in the transport, tourism or hotel industries.

AEMACO’s innovative unified platform solution helped Servhub’s facility reduce energy consumption significantly, lower maintenance costs and increase equipment lifespan

AEMACO, a leading provider of comprehensive energy management solutions, announced that it has successfully deployed its innovative energy management solution at Servhub’s labor camp in the UAE, which has helped the facilities management company reduce its energy consumption by 20%.

Established in 2020, AEMACO initially focused on air conditioning systems (ACs) and developed its own hardware and software solution for monitoring and controlling ACs, making the first of its kind in the UAE and Saudi markets. The company’s IoT hardware, comprising sensors and transmitters, has the capability to interface with the AC units across various buildings, while the software consolidates all directives to manage the devices.

AEMACO worked with PROVEN Solution to develop this energy management solution and implemented it at Servhub’s labor camp facility in the UAE. The unified platform solution helped the facility reduce energy consumption, lower maintenance costs and increase equipment lifespan. The combination of the IoT hardware device AirEcon and the AI-enabled software allows users to optimize energy usage automatically and boost energy efficiency.

“Recognizing the impact of utility consumption on building management costs, we aimed to develop a solution that would reduce expenses, improve energy efficiency, and incorporate automation. The AC units were grouped by floor or building level and managed through a single software interface. The system enabled the authorized personnel to remotely oversee all units and receive real-time updates on energy usage, detect anomalies, making it a proactive approach.

Last month, I found myself drawn by the allure of Busan’s famous beaches, especially Haeundae Beach, known for its white sand and lively atmosphere and as an ideal spot for swimming, yachting, or enjoying one of the many waterfront cafés.

For a more relaxed coastal experience, head to Gwangalli Beach, where you can enjoy views of the majestic Gwangan Bridge, beautifully lit up in the evening. Gwangalli also hosts various water sports, so if you’re feeling adventurous, try your hand at paddleboarding or jet skiing.

Beyond the beaches, Busan’s scenic beauty extends to its mountains and parks. Taejongdae Park, located on the southern edge of the city, offers stunning coastal cliffs and forested hiking trails. It’s a must-visit for anyone looking to immerse themselves in Busan’s natural splendor. to the sea. Seafood lovers will find themselves in culinary heaven. Another must-try dish in Busan is tteokbokki, a spicy and chewy rice cake snack that’s often sold by street vendors. And no visit to Busan would be complete without sampling Busan-style milmyeon, a cold wheat noodle dish that’s perfect for hot summer days.

Busan is also home to an eclectic café culture, with chic coffee shops popping up along its beachfronts and urban streets. Try local delicacies like ssiat hotteok, a filled Korean pancake stuffed with seeds, nuts, and sugar syrup, which you’ll find at many street markets.

Busan’s well-developed transportation system makes it easy to explore the

city. The Busan Metro is efficient and affordable, connecting major attractions and neighborhoods. Alternatively, you can take advantage of the city’s extensive bus network or opt for taxis for more convenience. KAZUKI TABATA THE ART OF SHIBORI

Shibori, the Japanese term meaning “to squeeze or wring”, originates from the simple practice of resist dyeing to create mesmerising arrays of colours, designs and patterns. Emerging in Japan during the 8th century, its popularity grew exponentially in the city of Kyoto, in the country’s largest island of Honshu, where clean water and large surrounding rivers are said to have inspired many of its residents to start local shibori workshops. Centuries later, that includes Mr Kazuki Tabata, who prides himself on practicing Kyoto’s distinctive hand dyeing methods through his maison, Tabata Shibori.

A former salaryman specialising in sound engineering, Kazuki began his career in shibori after the passing of his father’s uncle who worked in the family business as a traditional craftsman, which the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry certifies after at least 12 years of experience and succeeding written and practical exams. Kazuki, meanwhile, self-taught using the dyeing tools that were nearly thrown away, applying the technical skills of his formative studies in sound and lighting, its disciplines, and aspects of collaboration, to inform his shibori creations.

With a determination to preserve age-old techniques, Kazuki dedicates extensive hours to hand-dyeing, creating patterns using entirely manual processes by way

of Bosen, a resist-dye method achieved by binding fabric with threads, wrapping it with plastic, clamping it between boards, or gathering wrinkles to create areas where the dye is resisted. ‘These processes are often overlooked,’ Kazuki says. ‘Traditional crafts carry stories and significance in their processes, and I believe there is a need to educate more people about this aspect to shift the demand towards appreciating the artistry behind each piece.’

Kazuki describes the compatibility between shibori dyeing and fabric as ‘necessary’, often favouring fibres such as cotton, linen and silk with character and depths best suited for effective dye penetration. Distinguished by the patterns or forms created from tying fabric, Kazuki specializes in methods such as kasa maki shibori, which resembles a wrapped umbrella, boushi shibori, resembling a hat, yukihana shibori, resembling snowflakes, and a unique technique known as tako boushi shibori, where the tied shape resembles an octopus. The dyes draw from traditional Japanese colours and hues found in nature throughout the four seasons.

In committing his life to shibori, Kazuki promises to preserve it for the future. ‘In an age where machines and computers can accomplish almost anything, it is

precisely because of this convenience that I feel compelled to preserve shibori dyeing for future generations,’ he says. And while Japan boasts the world’s oldest history, Kazuki welcomes the digital age. ‘Through social media platforms, many people learn about shibori dyeing. I believe tradition evolves while adapting to the times.’

Kazuki Tabata’s collaboration with COS proudly celebrates the fusion of traditional craft and modern design through a 14-piece capsule that spans womenswear, menswear, and accessories. COS’ signature silhouettes are transformed through the craft of shibori: the result is a capsule with a unique blend of texture and flair. As art and fashion intertwine, soft tones of blue, orange and brown evoke a sense of timelessness and calm.

The capsule launches online and in select COS stores in June 2024.

Established in 1923, MAHA has evolved into Southeast Asia's premier agricultural exhibition, a testament to Malaysia's rich farming heritage. Celebrating a century of innovation and resilience, MAHA promotes sustainable practices and bridges urban-rural gaps.

Vice Consul for Agriculture in the Consulate General of Malaysia in Dubai, Mr. Muhd Arif Jauhari, stated, “This year marks the centennial anniversary of MAHA EXPO. For a century, MAHA has been a beacon of agricultural innovation, education, and community engagement.

This monumental achievement underscores the profound legacy and impact MAHA has had over the past hundred years, from spearheading agricultural advancements to nurturing community spirit.

In countries like the UAE where we have a large expat workforce, we conduct cultural sensitivity programmes, to better integrate staff into the country they work in, as well as make it easier for them to work with and serve people from other nationalities. Our VFS Global Women’s Network offers mentoring programmes for the career enhancement of women in the organisation. These are just a few examples of our efforts.
