LUXURY, VOLUME AND PROFITABILITY
HAKAN OZEL
Area General Manager, Operations of Shangri-La Dubai
Luxury is a term that suggests different meanings and emotions for different consumers and businesses. For some, it is a symbol of status, quality, and prestige, while for others, it is a way of expressing their identity, taste, and lifestyle. Luxury products and services are often associated with high prices, scarcity, and differentiation, which creates a sense of exclusivity and desire among customers. However, luxury also offers a strategic dilemma for luxury enterprises that aim to maximize their profitability and desirable
growth. They should increase their volume and market share without diluting their brand image and value proposition, maintain their profit margins and competitive advantage without sacrificing their quality, innovation and creativity, and adapt to the changing preferences and expectations of their target consumers without losing their core identity and customer loyalty.
One way to understand the strategic dilemma of luxury is to use a trade-off model that illustrates the
relationship between luxury, volume and profitability. The model suggests that there is a negative correlation between luxury and volume, and a positive correlation between volume and profitability. In other words, the more luxurious a product or service is, the less volume it can generate, and the more volume it generates, the more profitable it can be. The model also implies that there is an optimal point where the trade-off between luxury and volume is balanced by the trade-off between volume and profitability, resulting in the highest
possible profit for a given level of luxury. The optimal point may vary depending on the industry, market, product category and customer segment.
The trade-off model suggests that businesses that operate in the luxury sector must make strategic choices about their positioning, pricing, distribution, marketing, and innovation. Depending on their objectives, resources, and capabilities, they can adopt different strategies to balance luxury, volume, and profitability.
Luxury brands should stick to the core. This strategy involves focusing on the core attributes and values that define the luxury brand and its products or services, and maintaining a high level of exclusivity, quality, and differentiation. This strategy can help to preserve the brand image and loyalty, and to charge premium prices, but it may limit the volume and growth potential, and expose the business to the risk of being overtaken by new entrants or substitutes.
Another strategy is called as stretching the brand. This strategy involves extending the luxury brand to new product categories, markets or segments, and leveraging the brand equity and reputation to attract new customers and increase volume. This strategy can help to increase the market share and profitability, and to diversify the revenue streams, but it may dilute the brand image and value proposition and corrode the profit margins and competitive advantage.
Segmenting the market is another strategy, heavily used in luxury hotel business. This strategy involves creating different sub-brands or lines within the luxury brand portfolio and targeting different customer segments with different levels of luxury, price and distribution. This strategy can help to capture a larger share of the market and to cater to the varying needs and preferences of customers, but it may confuse the brand identity and positioning, and increase the operational complexity and costs.

The final strategy is innovating the offerings. This strategy involves developing new products or services that offer unique benefits or experiences to customers, and that enhance the luxury brand's innovation and creativity. This strategy can help to differentiate the brand from competitors and to create new sources of value and demand, but it may require significant investments, and face the uncertainty and risk of the client acceptance.
Luxury, volume and profitability are three interrelated variables that offer a strategic dilemma for businesses that operate in the luxury sector. The trade-off model suggests that there is an optimal point where the trade-off between luxury and volume is balanced by the trade-off between
volume and profitability, resulting in the highest possible profit for a given level of luxury. However, the optimal point may vary depending on the industry, market, product category and customer segment.
Therefore, businesses have to make strategic choices about their positioning, pricing, distribution, marketing and innovation, and adopt different strategies to balance luxury, volume and profitability. The strategies may include sticking to the core, stretching the brand, segmenting the market and innovating the offering. Each strategy has its advantages and disadvantages and requires careful analysis and evaluation of the internal and external factors that affect the business performance and sustainability.

CRAFTING UNPARALLELED LUXURY EXPERIENCES THROUGH CROSS-SECTOR PARTNERSHIPS
By Nicolas Soucaille, General Manager – UAE, BlacklaneThe hospitality industry thrives on the dynamic flow of mobility, which is indispensable for its survival and expansion. In the modern era of travel, where guests seek more than just a place to stay, offering an integrated experience where every move is smooth and every service is tailored is what will set the hospitality brand apart. This is where strategic partnerships, particularly between hotels and chauffeur services, become crucial. Such collaborations bridge the gap between travel and accommodation, ensuring guests enjoy a seamless transition from their point of arrival to their chosen destination and dining venues.
Recent events, from global health crises to a growing emphasis on sustainability, have also transformed our perception of travel. Safety has jumped to the top of everyone’s list, underscoring the need for best practices for customer well-being. Luxury is no longer sufficient; travellers increasingly seek trusted technologydriven experiences and personalised touches. For example, in a city like Dubai, renowned for its opulence and innovation, there has been a notable increase in demand for travel experiences prioritising safety and convenience.
Leading the charge in meeting the everchanging demands of modern travellers are chauffeur services. They have stepped up the game to offer services that are personalised, technology-driven comforts. These modern fleets, outfitted with amenities like Wi-Fi and massage chairs, cater to the discerning traveller seeking tranquillity en route.
Designed with business professionals in mind, these rides transform travel time into productive workspaces where guests can answer calls and hold distraction-
free meetings, free from the external disruptions of nearby traffic.
Additionally, the Middle East’s ecotourism industry is experiencing rapid growth, with projections estimating its value at $374.2 billion by 2028. This indicates that travellers are seeking out more sustainable ways to explore cities. Many chauffeur services are responding to this demand by offering electric vehicle fleets and implementing strong ESG practices.
All these factors highlight the importance of how guests arrive and depart from their chosen retreats. Collaboration between hotels and trusted chauffeur services becomes crucial and can shape and enhance guests’ overall travel experiences. Hotels that add highquality, personalised transport to their offerings give their guests a complete experience from the moment they land.
For tourists exploring an unfamiliar city, a hotel-endorsed chauffeur service doesn't just add convenience; it instils confidence. Such partnerships extend the hotel's embrace beyond its lobby, ensuring journeys are as comforting and refined as the stay itself. This trust placed in a chauffeur service reflects the hotel’s commitment to guest satisfaction in every aspect, adapting meticulously to the diverse needs of travellers, be it for business, leisure, or family trips.
Guests expect their ride to be reliable - to be picked up on time, to reach their destination on time, and to have their chauffeur wait regardless of any delays. This reliability becomes integral, seamlessly blending with hotel hospitality to deliver an unparalleled standard of excellence that encompasses both the journey and the destination.
At Blacklane, we have seen the demand for bespoke travel solutions that provide convenience and customisation. Our clients see transportation as an essential part of their travel experience. We have carefully chosen our fleet, comprising Mercedes-Benz, electric vehicles that come with state-of-the-art HEPA air filtration systems and noisecancellation technology. More than half of our chauffeurs are women who have been expertly trained at our Chauffeur Academy.
They are full-time, salaried employees, which ensures they can prioritise the safety of our guests while simultaneously maintaining the reliability our clients depend on for timely arrivals and reaching destinations on schedule. Additionally, we offer the flexibility of advanced and hourly booking options, as well as a ride-now option to enhance the overall travel experience. It’s the perfect opportunity for the hospitality industry to redefine its offerings and elevate the guest experience.
As the hospitality industry evolves and adapts to new trends and demands, hotels and chauffeur services must collaborate to provide customers with an integrated, secure, and sustainable experience. The potential for innovation within these partnerships is boundless.
From offering customised itineraries that showcase local culture to incorporating technology for a seamless booking experience, the collaboration between hotels and chauffeur services can set new standards in travel. By advancing these partnerships that place the guest experiences above all, we can redefine the essence of hospitality, ensuring that every journey is as memorable as the stay that follows.

THE VITAL ROLE OF DATA ANALYTICS IN HR AND FINANCE FOR SMEs
In the dynamic landscape of modern business, small and medium enterprises (SMEs) often find themselves grappling with limited resources while striving for growth and competitiveness. In this pursuit, binding the power of data analytics emerges as a pivotal strategy, particularly within the realms of Human Resources (HR) and Finance.
While traditionally viewed as the domain of larger corporations, data analytics has become increasingly indispensable for SMEs, offering transformative insights and informed decision-making.
According to Research Gate, a study conducted by Gupta and Bhatt (2021), which examined the impact of HR Analytics on organisational excellence, indicated that such tool is indeed vital in improving the efficiency and effectiveness of their HR practices.
Within HR departments, data analytics revolutionises recruitment, talent management, and employee engagement plans. By analysing historical data on recruitment efforts, SMEs can identify the most effective channels for sourcing talent, reducing time-to-hire and cost-per-hire metrics.
Furthermore, data analytics facilitates the creation of comprehensive profiles of top-performing employees, enabling HR professionals to refine hiring criteria and foster a culture of success within the organisation. Through sentiment analysis of employee feedback and engagement surveys, SMEs can proactively address issues of workplace
By Jadd Elliot Dibsatisfaction and retention, and nurturing a motivated and productive workforce.
Meanwhile, in the financial realm, data analytics empowers SMEs to optimise operational efficiency, mitigate risks, and drive strategic growth. By utilising financial data analytics tools, such as predictive modelling and trend analysis, finance teams can gain deeper insights into cash flow patterns, revenue drivers, and cost structures.
This enables SMEs to make data-driven decisions regarding pricing strategies, resource allocation, and investment opportunities, thereby maximising profitability and sustainability. Basically, through the application of the right predictive analytics technique in risk management, SMEs can identify and mitigate potential financial risks, safeguarding against market fluctuations and unforeseen challenges.
Despite the myriad of benefits that data analytics offers, many SMEs remain hesitant to embrace this transformative technology, citing concerns over cost, complexity, and expertise. However, the advent of user-friendly analytics platforms and cloud-based solutions has democratised access to data-driven insights, making them accessible and affordable for SMEs of all sizes.

By embracing the latent value within their data, SMEs can gain a holistic understanding of their operations, customers, and market dynamics, enabling them to stay agile and responsive in the face of evolving challenges and opportunities.
The correct integration of data analytics into HR and finance functions fosters synergy and alignment across the organisation, facilitating holistic decision-making and strategic alignment. By breaking down silos and fostering a culture of data-driven collaboration, SMEs can leverage their collective expertise and insights to drive innovation and achieve sustainable growth.
In conclusion, the importance of data analytics in HR and finance for small and medium-sized enterprises cannot be overstated.
One cannot deny the transformative impact of data science in 2024. With the correct analytics approach, SMEs can unlock new avenues of growth, enhance operational efficiency, and cultivate a competitive edge in today's fast-paced business landscape. As we navigate the complexities of an increasingly interconnected world, data analytics emerges as a beacon of opportunity for SMEs, empowering them to thrive and flourish in the digital age.

THE FUTURE OF GLOBAL SUPPLY CHAINS
By Julianne Holt-Kailihiwa, CEO of Sumo International Inc. LLCThe global supply chain is the lifeblood of the modern economy, connecting producers and consumers across continents in a complex web of transactions. However, recent disruptions, from natural disasters to geopolitical tensions have exposed vulnerabilities in our global networks that necessitate a re-evaluation of how we approach supply chain management. As we look to the future, several evolving trends, challenges, and opportunities stand out, shaping the path forward for businesses worldwide.
RESILIENCE THROUGH DIVERSIFICATION
Unforeseen circumstances like the pandemic and floods underscored the risks of overreliance on single sources for critical materials and goods. Companies are now recognizing the importance of diversifying their supply sources to mitigate risks. This doesn't simply mean shifting from one primary supplier to another but involves a strategic overhaul to develop multiple, reliable supply channels across different geographies.
TECHNOLOGY AS A FACILITATOR
Advancements in technology offer unprecedented opportunities to enhance supply chain efficiency and transparency. Artificial intelligence (AI), blockchain, and the Internet of Things (IoT) are not just buzzwords but pivotal tools. AI can forecast demands and identify potential disruptions, while blockchain offers a new level of transparency and trust in transactions. IoT devices enable real-time tracking of goods, ensuring they are efficiently and safely transported.
SUSTAINABILITY AT THE FOREFRONT
Environmental concerns are driving a major rethink of supply chain operations. The push for sustainability is increasingly seen as a strategic component of business operations. Companies are looking to reduce their carbon footprint, utilize sustainable materials,

and optimize logistics to be more energy efficient. This shift is not only about adhering to regulations but also about meeting the expectations of a discerning consumer base.
THE HUMAN ELEMENT
Despite the surge in automation and technology, the human element remains irreplaceable. Skilled human resources are crucial in managing supply chains, requiring continuous investment in training and development. Additionally, labour practices are under more scrutiny than ever, pushing companies to ensure fair conditions throughout their supply chains, which is as much a moral imperative as it is a business one.
ADAPTING TO GEOPOLITICAL SHIFTS
Global trade policies and geopolitical shifts can reshape supply chains overnight. Companies must stay agile, with strategies that can adapt to changes such as trade wars, tariffs, and political instability. This might involve scenario planning and establishing operations in politically stable countries.
THE ROLE OF GOVERNMENT AND REGULATIONS
Governments across the globe are reassessing their roles in the global supply chain. Increased regulation and incentives for maintaining certain levels of domestic production are trends likely to grow. Businesses must navigate these changes carefully, maintaining compliance while advocating for policies that support global trade efficiencies.
HOW CAN WE PREPARE?
The future of global supply chains is complex and fraught with challenges, but it is also ripe with opportunities for those willing to innovate and adapt. As we continue to navigate these turbulent times, the key will be in building resilient, responsive, and responsible supply chains that can not only withstand future disruptions but also thrive in an evolving global landscape. By embracing change and looking toward sustainable, technology-driven solutions, we can ensure that our supply chains not only survive but lead the way in the business of tomorrow.

NUTANIX SIMPLIFIES MANAGEMENT AND OPERATIONS OF KUBERNETES CLUSTERS ANYWHERE TO SPEED INNOVATION
Nutanix (NASDAQ: NTNX), a leader in hybrid multicloud computing, today announced Nutanix Kubernetes® Platform (NKP) to simplify management of container-based modern applications using Kubernetes. NKP enables customers to innovate faster with a complete, CNCF-compliant cloud native stack that gives Platform Engineering teams a consistent operating model for securely managing Kubernetes clusters across on-premises, hybrid, and multicloud environments. This can help customers deploy more cloud native and containerized applications that can ultimately run anywhere.
“Enterprises have standardized on Kubernetes to speed application development and simplify portability across the hybrid cloud. However, the DevOps culture has led to adoption of disparate Kubernetes environments within the same organization
leading to operational complexity, overhead and silos,” said Simon Robinson, Principal Analyst, Infrastructure, Enterprise Strategy Group. "Nutanix Kubernetes Platform offers a path to consistency across a fleet of Kubernetes clusters which can help drastically reduce cost of operations and speed time to market.”
NKP targets a new class of Kubernetes Platform Engineering teams to bring enterprise resilience, day-2 operations, and compliance to modern applications at scale. For example, customers can manage clusters running containers on Nutanix on-premises and clusters running in the public cloud with one single pane of glass, cutting down on complexity and operating costs. It also enables organizations to manage clusters running in non-Nutanix environments, including popular public cloud Kubernetes services, as well as both connected and air-
gapped environments. This helps customers innovate faster by removing the hurdles in adopting cloud native architectures for their applications.
“One of the biggest challenges organizations face with cloud native applications is deploying, securing and managing the rapidly expanding fleets of Kubernetes clusters being deployed on premises and in public clouds and NKP simplifies this,” said Tobi Knaup, GM Cloud Native at Nutanix. “This work directly supports our vision, along with Project Beacon, to enable customers to run modern applications and their data anywhere.”
NKP helps enterprises manage the operational complexity of running enterprisegrade kubernetes deployments. Specifically, it delivers:
• Kubernetes Platform for Data-Driven Apps: NKP integrates with the industry-leading
Nutanix portfolio of data services, providing reliable scale-out block, file, and object storage, as well as databases-as-a-service.
• Simplified Kubernetes Management through Automation: NKP is powerful in its ability to simplify Kubernetes deployment, security, monitoring and upgrades through best-of-breed automation and AI-driven operational insights that reduce complexity and human error, and establish consistency and standardization.
• Complete Platform without Vendor Lock-In: NKP is built on pure upstream CNCF-conformant Kubernetes, enabling customers to enjoy the innovation of the open-source community while avoiding the portability, compatibility, upgradeability, and security issues associated with forked Kubernetes versions and singlevendor solutions. Additionally, because NKP is part of the cloud native ecosystem, customers can easily leverage CNCF-compatible partner solutions to build a Platform Engineering stack that fits their particular needs.
• Multi-cluster Fleet Management: NKP eases the management of Kubernetes clusters through a centralized management plane, a userfriendly dashboard that acts as a single point of observability and control for clusters running on-premises, in public cloud, edge, and airgapped environments. NKP extends public cloud Kubernetes services like EKS and AKS with a full suite of platform services, giving customers a single standardized way of managing their entire Kubernetes fleet.
NKP comes in three tiers, giving customers what they need at their stage of maturity in cloud native adoption. NKP Starter is included in Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure and effectively replaces the existing Nutanix Kubernetes Engine. It delivers turnkey clusters with pure, upstream Kubernetes. NKP Pro adds a suite of cloud native projects to provide a complete platform to securely run and operate individual clusters, including built in Nutanix Data services for Kubernetes when deployed on Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure. Lastly, NKP Ultimate brings fleet management capabilities, including the ability to install, run and monitor clusters in the public cloud.
This solution also builds on the work that Nutanix will deliver as part of Project Beacon to help customers deploy more cloud-native and containerized applications that can ultimately run anywhere. Organizations will be able to leverage NKP to manage Kubernetes applications and their data as well as the modern data services available natively in public clouds, on-premises, at the edge, and even other hypervisors.
NKP builds upon mature Kubernetes management technologies proven at scale by D2iQ’s Kubernetes Platform, which was acquired by Nutanix in 2023. NKP is expected to be available in the summer of 2024.

TOP 10 TIPS TO PROTECT YOUR PRIVACY AND SAFETY DURING THE ONLINE SHOPPING SEASON
AND BEYOND
By Chester Wisniewski, Director, Field CTOUSE AN AD BLOCKER
Advertisements are not only tracking your every movement and collecting enough information on your habits to make the FBI blush, but they are also a major source of malicious links and deceptive content on the internet. Not only is your browsing safer, but also faster and uses less bandwidth. Two of our favorites are uBlock Origin and Ghostery.
USE PRIVATE BROWSING OR INCOGNITO MODE
To prevent your shopping habits and interests from following you around from site to site (and potentially revealing what gifts you might be purchasing to others using your device, bonus!), you should enable private browsing (Firefox) or incognito mode (Chrome). This will block tracking cookies and help the internet forget your travels as the waves wash away your footprints in the sand.
MAKE YOUR BROWSER “PRIVACY SMART”
The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) provides a browser extension called Privacy Badger designed to automatically make all the right choices around browsing whilst maintaining our privacy and blocking invisible trackers.
AVOID USING ONE ACCOUNT ON MULTIPLE SERVICES
When logging into an e-commerce site it is often tempting to use the “Sign in with Facebook” or “Sign in with Google” button. While it takes a few more minutes to create a new login, it will provide more privacy as you are not sharing all of the sites you shop at with these tech giants.
USE GUEST LOGIN WHEN AVAILABLE
In addition to letting you use an account from other websites, many have an option to use a guest login rather than creating a new account.
This is a great option if you don’t expect to need technical support or to do business on

a recurring basis. Fewer passwords, fewer personal details, fewer problems if they get hacked.
DON’T SAVE CARD DETAILS
Many e-commerce sites will default to storing your credit card information in your profile for your “convenience” (or their hope you’ll shop there again). They can’t lose what they don’t have, so tell them not to store your credit card unless it is absolutely necessary.
USE TEMPORARY CARD NUMBERS
Many financial institutions now offer temporary or one-time use credit card numbers. You can open the app on your phone or in your browser and get a single-use disposable credit card number preventing card fraud and tracking when merchants share card processors. Sometimes you’re even able to specify a card limit per temporary number to further protect your account.
USE CREDIT, NOT DEBIT
All of us need to be wary of overspending during the holidays, but it is best to leave the debit card at home. Credit cards offer
significantly more protection against online fraud, and you are in the power position in a dispute. You can simply not pay your bill while disputing the charge, rather than having criminals directly drain your bank account of your hard-earned cash.
BEWARE OF DIRECT MESSAGES VIA SOCIAL MEDIA/CHAT APPS
With modern generative AI technology it is almost trivial to create an entire fake online store and lure people to share their personal information and payment data with you. It’s safest to shop at established sites or those personally recommended to you by friends and family. Many unsolicited messages lead to data collection or theft.
DON’T CLICK DEALS IN EMAIL THAT LOOK TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE OR ARE FROM BUSINESSES YOU DON’T HAVE ACCOUNTS FROM
These could be phishing emails hoping to bait you into clicking links to bogus, malicious web sites.

CLOUDFLARE ANNOUNCES UNIFIED RISK POSTURE TO PROVIDE COMPREHENSIVE AND CONTINUOUS RISK MANAGEMENT AT SCALE—FOR FREE
Cloudflare, Inc., the security, performance, and reliability company helping to build a better Internet, today announced Cloudflare for Unified Risk Posture, a new suite of risk management solutions designed to streamline the process of identifying, evaluating, and managing cyber threats that pose risk to an organization, across all environments.
Powered by Cloudflare’s rich security suite – including capabilities from Secure Access Service Edge (SASE) and application security – and paired alongside best-in-class partnerships with CrowdStrike and other leading endpoint and identity management providers, customers can eliminate
manual processes and gain a more complete picture of cyber risks to effectively remediate them, from a single platform.
Emerging technology and new stateof-the-art attack methods are driving a tectonic shift in the race between threat actors and defenders. Now more than ever, organizations need to reduce the manual effort required to maintain security operations and increase visibility across risk environments. But with standalone security tools and point solutions, it is near impossible to holistically assess and remediate risk.
CISOs need a simple and comprehensive approach to regain control across every
attack vector, whether it’s internal dangers, like insider threats and phishing scams, or external threats like zero-day exploits and data breaches.
“Attacks are only becoming more sophisticated and causing more damage. In the last 12 months, Cloudflare has discovered and mitigated some of the largest and most complex online threats in the history of the Internet – while we continue to see bad actors weaponizing emerging vulnerabilities faster than ever,” said Matthew Prince, co-founder and CEO of Cloudflare.
“The security landscape is complex enough, organizations need to have a clear view of all of the threats and risks

MORE SOPHISTICATED AND CAUSING MORE DAMAGE.
inside and outside of their environments.
Cloudflare Unified Risk Posture is one of the only tools that equips companies to continuously identify and address threats at the breakneck speed required to stay safe against an ever-evolving threat landscape.”
Cloudflare for Unified Risk Posture simplifies a CISO’s journey to locking down risk in their environment, through a single platform that evaluates threats, exchanges indicators and enforces dynamic controls across the business. Built natively on Cloudflare's global network, this suite allows organizations of all sizes to:
• Customize policies based on unique risk scores across users and applications: With AI and machine learning, Cloudflare analyzes real-time user activities and suspicious traffic that passes through the network, to identify abnormal behavior and potential indicators of compromise. Security teams can lock down suspicious activity and adapt security posture in the face of changing risk factors and threats.
• Gain a more holistic and complete view of the threat landscape: Cloudflare ingests risk scores from endpoint protection (EPP) and identity provider (IDP) partners and shares telemetry back with SIEM and XDR platforms. Integrations with tools such as CrowdStrike Falcon Next-Gen SIEM allows customers to tap into deeper analysis and further investigate potential risks – from a unified API. Unifying first

and third-party data, native threat intelligence, AI and workflow automation, enables overall better threat protection.
• Enable control locally, on a global scale: Organizations can now instantly enact new risk controls across their entire network, in every time zone, without the need to set up and manage controls in each region they operate. Powered by the Cloudflare global network – one of the largest in the world – Unified Risk Posture supplies unique real-time telemetry to enrich risk posture long-term.
Cloudflare for Unified Risk Posture comes at a time where security teams are spending copious labor and money sifting through massive volumes of data to pinpoint and combat threats – like trying to find a needle in a haystack.
“Cloudflare is helping us mitigate risk more effectively with less effort and simplifies how we deliver Zero Trust across my organization,” said Anthony Moisant, SVP, Chief Information Officer and Chief Security Officer at Indeed.
“CrowdStrike Falcon Next-Gen SIEM delivers up to 150x faster search performance over legacy SIEMs and products positioned as SIEM alternatives. Our transformative telemetry, paired with Cloudflare’s robust Zero Trust capabilities provides an unprecedented partnership,” said Daniel Bernard, Chief Business Officer at Crowdstrike. “Together, we are converging two of the most critical pieces of the risk management puzzle that organizations of every size must address in order to combat today’s growing threats.”

A BLEND OF ELEGANCE AND OCEANIC CHARM Discovering Biarritz
By Shereen Shabnam
Visiting Biarritz, a picturesque seaside town located on the southwestern coast of France has been a highlight in my career as a travel journalist. Known for its luxurious atmosphere, stunning beaches, and rich history, Biarritz has long been a favourite destination for travellers seeking a mix of relaxation and sophistication.
Biarritz is renowned for its breath-taking coastline and world-class surf spots. This was what I noticed first as I ventured to my hotel on the coast. During my visit to Biarritz, I had the privilege of staying at the magnificent Hotel Du Palais. This iconic hotel, once a summer residence of Napoleon III and Empress Eugénie, epitomizes luxury and elegance.
The Hotel Du Palais exudes historical grandeur with its Second Empire architectural style. Built in 1855, the hotel has retained its regal charm while offering modern amenities. Walking through its halls, one can feel the opulence of the bygone era, enhanced by antique furnishings and exquisite decor.
The rooms and suites at the Hotel Du Palais are a blend of classic elegance and contemporary comfort. My suite offered breath-taking views of the Atlantic Ocean, a spacious living area, and a luxurious bathroom. The attention to detail in the room's design made my stay truly memorable.
The hotel's dining options are nothing short of spectacular. The Michelin-starred restaurant, La Rotonde, serves gourmet French cuisine with a focus on local ingredients. Breakfast at La Rotonde, with its panoramic ocean views, was a daily highlight. For a more casual dining experience, the hotel's terrace restaurant offers a delightful selection of dishes in a relaxed setting.
In addition to that, Biarritz boasts a vibrant culinary scene. From traditional Basque cuisine to Michelin-starred restaurants, the

town offers a variety of dining experiences. Don't miss out on local specialties and fresh seafood.
The Hotel Du Palais boasts a world-class spa, offering a range of treatments inspired by the healing properties of the ocean. I indulged in a rejuvenating thalassotherapy session, which left me feeling refreshed and revitalized. The hotel's wellness facilities also include a fitness centre, indoor pool, and sauna.
Biarritz is indeed famous for many thalassotherapy centres, where visitors can indulge in therapeutic treatments using seawater and marine products. These treatments are perfect for relaxation and rejuvenation.
The Grande Plage, the town's main beach, is perfect for sunbathing and enjoying the Atlantic waves. For surfing enthusiasts, the Côte des Basques offers some of the best waves in Europe, attracting surfers from all over the world.
The town is dotted with historic landmarks. The Biarritz Lighthouse, standing tall since 1834, offers panoramic views of the Bay of Biscay. Another must-visit is the Rock of the Virgin (Rocher de la Vierge), a stunning rock formation with a statue of the Virgin Mary, accessible via a footbridge.
My hotel's prime location made it easy to explore Biarritz. Whether it's a leisurely stroll along the beach, a visit to nearby attractions, or a shopping spree in the town centre, everything is within easy reach.
Biarritz, with its stunning beaches, rich history, and luxurious accommodations, is a destination that promises an unforgettable experience. Staying at the Hotel Du Palais added a touch of royal elegance to my journey, making it a perfect retreat for both relaxation and refinement.
Whether you're a history buff, a foodie, or a beach lover, Biarritz has something to offer everyone.
DYNAMIC AND DIVERSE TAIPEI
A Vibrant Blend of Tradition and Modernity
By Shereen Shabnam
Taipei, the capital of Taiwan, is a dynamic city that seamlessly blends ancient traditions with cutting-edge modernity. From towering skyscrapers to serene temples, bustling night markets to tranquil parks, Taipei offers a rich tapestry of experiences for every traveller. I had ventured into Taiwan for the famous lantern festival, but my journey started with exploring the vibrant parts of Taipei.
My hotel was close to Taipei 101 so naturally this was my first stop. Once the tallest building in the world, Taipei 101 is an architectural marvel. Visitors can take the high-speed elevator to the observation deck on the 89th floor for breath-taking views of the city. The skyscraper also houses a shopping mall with luxury brands and gourmet restaurants.
Next was the Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall. This iconic landmark is dedicated to the former President of the Republic of China, Chiang Kai-Shek. The grand hall, surrounded by beautiful gardens, features a large statue of Chiang and a museum detailing his life and Taiwan's history.
The National Palace Museum is another information filled attraction. Home to one of the largest collections of Chinese art and artifacts in the world, the National Palace Museum is a must-visit.
If you like temples, the Longshan Temple is one of Taipei’s oldest and most famous and it is a stunning example of traditional Taiwanese architecture. It serves as a spiritual centre for locals and a fascinating cultural site for visitors.
For shopping, there are many options but my guide highly recommends Ximending. Often referred to as the "Harajuku of Taipei," Ximending is a lively shopping district known for its trendy fashion boutiques, street food, and entertainment options. It's a popular spot for young people and tourists alike.
The extensive collection includes ancient jade, ceramics, calligraphy, and paintings. Taipei also has The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) and the Taipei Fine Arts Museum to showcase a wide range of contemporary and modern art from Taiwan and around the world.

The Taipei 101 Mall is also ideal for luxury shopping, as an upscale shopping center that features high-end international brands, designer boutiques, and fine dining establishments. The Shilin Night Market is also a must as it offers a wide array of goods, from clothing and accessories to electronics and souvenirs. The market is also a foodie paradise with numerous stalls selling delicious street food.
Taipei is a cultural hub with numerous theatres and performance venues. The National Theatre and Concert Hall host a variety of performances, including traditional Chinese opera, modern theatre, and international concerts.

Taipei's cultural calendar is filled with festivals that celebrate traditional and contemporary culture. The Lantern Festival, Dragon Boat Festival, and the Taipei Film Festival are just a few examples of the city's vibrant cultural scene.
For dining, a visit to Taipei is incomplete without trying Din Tai Fung's famous xiaolongbao (soup dumplings). This Michelinstarred restaurant is renowned for its delicate dumplings and other Taiwanese delicacies. Taipei is a haven for street food lovers. Raohe Night Market and Ningxia Night Market are great places to start your culinary adventure. For a taste of traditional Taiwanese cuisine, visit local eateries and restaurants that serve the three-cup chicken and Taiwanese hot pot. These dishes offer a rich and flavourful experience of the island’s culinary heritage.
Taipei is surrounded by natural hot springs. Beitou Hot Spring is the most famous, offering a range of hot spring resorts and public baths to relax and soak in the therapeutic waters. For nature enthusiasts, Taipei offers numerous hiking trails with stunning views like the Elephant Mountain (Xiangshan) and Yangmingshan National Park, offering beautiful landscapes and diverse flora and fauna.
Taipei has a rich tea culture, and a visit to a traditional tea house is a must. Maokong, located on the outskirts of the city, is famous for its tea plantations and offers scenic views along with a serene tea-drinking experience.
I left Taipei for the Lantern Festival, a journey into a world of mesmerizing light and cultural wonder. Held annually during the first full moon of the Lunar New Year, the festival transforms the night sky into a tapestry of glowing lanterns, each meticulously crafted and often adorned with intricate

designs, carrying wishes and prayers for the coming year. Attending this festival was an unforgettable experience and I returned to Taipei with great memories.
Taipei is a city that captivates with its vibrant blend of old and new. Whether you're exploring its historic temples, indulging in its diverse culinary scene, shopping in its bustling markets, or enjoying its natural beauty, Taipei promises a memorable and enriching travel experience.

A LABYRINTH OF 12TH CENTURY MUD AND STONE BRICK BUILDINGS AlUla, Saudi Arabia
The Dar Tantora The House Hotel, AlUla Old Town, Saudi Arabia is officially open.
Operated by Kerten Hospitality, this unique 30-room boutique eco-community, designed in collaboration with Egyptian Architect Shahira Fahmy sits in the heart of AlUla’s Old Town - a labyrinth of 12th Century mud and stone brick buildings, surrounding a 10th-century castle or fort.
Built with the same materials and architectural techniques as AlUla Old Town’s 900 surviving traditional houses, the property utilises the southern end of the AlUla Old Town heritage site, reimagining some of the surviving homes into luxury multiple-level exquisite accommodations.
AlUla is a globally significant heritage destination in North West Arabia which has
been home to 7,000 years of successive civilisations and was the crossroad of the historic trading route, the Incense Road.
AlUla Old Town was built as the new city centre in the Islamic era, sitting opposite a shady and cool oasis of palm trees and surrounded by wells, the town was a welcome respite for pilgrims travelling through AlUla on their way to Mecca.
The design and build of Dar Tantora The House Hotel includes 30 earth-clad dars (rooms) and suites, an infinity pool, gym, yoga and meditation studio, spa and hotel restaurant. A low-impact, sustainabilityled property - the only one of its kind in the world - the hotel was built using traditional techniques and materials, is lit by candlelight, and uses expertly restored original irrigation and ventilation systems, all of which minimise energy usage and
environmental impact. For this, Shahira Fahmy’s team worked with the founder of EQI (Environmental Quality International) Dr. Mounir Neamatalla.
Architect Shahira Fahmy - a Harvard Fellow hailed by Phaidon as ‘one of the architects building the Arab future’ and recently featured in RIBA’s 100 Women: Architects in Practice - worked closely with specialist restoration teams and traditional local craftsmen to restore the fabric of the 12th Century buildings that make up the hotel property: the original mud brick walls, stonework, windows and historic murals.
The walls of Dar Tantora The House Hotel - and AlUla Old Town more widely - are adorned with murals that were traditionally painted by the community as a wedding gift for newly-wed couples, to decorate their

new home. These celebratory murals tell stories of local flora, fauna, household items, festive customs, calligraphy and abstract symbols, alongside joyful motifs connected to themes of abundance and happiness. Using authentic natural pigments, Fahmy and her team have restored these artistic accounts of a changing culture to great effect.
At JOONTOS, the property’s signature restaurant, the team strives to source local ingredients by building relationships with AlUla’s farmers and suppliers and implementing a zero-waste philosophy in the kitchen. Produce available in the surrounding oasis includes a wide variety of citrus, dates, mangoes, pomegranates and an increasing selection of root vegetables as part of an agricultural training programme facilitating local farmers to be an integral part of the food supply chain as hospitality grows in AlUla.
The name and unique layout of Dar Tantora is taken from the Tantora (traditional sundial) which sits at the entrance to the property and has for centuries served as a timekeeper, setting the pace of daily life and the cultural cadence of AlUla Old Town, based on the agrarian seasons.
The duplex bedrooms of Dar Tantora The House Hotel mirror traditional domestic life in AlUla Old Town, with bedrooms upstairs and living/working areas below. Terraces, rooftops and the infinity pool are all designed to optimise views of the oasis and surrounding rocks and stargazing at night. The artistic and cultural heritage of AlUla is built into the very fabric of the property.
The students of AlUla’s nearby Madrasat Addeera - a school that champions the tools and techniques needed to transfer AlUla’s traditional arts into a contemporary context - exhibit their works at Dar Tantora.

The House Hotel currently displays three artworks that have been curated by Creative Dialogue and the artworks of Gregory Chatonsky that incorporate Sadu, the traditional Bedouin embroidery technique using hand-woven dyed camel hair formed into geometrical shapes for a variety of textiles.
Residents inhabited AlUla Old Town as recently as the 1980s when they left in favour of more modern conveniences and electricity. Some members of staff at Dar Tantora The House Hotel lived there and have intergenerational family connections that date back several centuries.
The hotel’s bread maker is a native of AlUla who grew up in one of the mud and stone houses in Old Town where she would make bread for her family. She tells of how the community lived back then and how the families lived on the first floor while the ground floor was for the goats and chickens.
The hotel proudly celebrates the traditions and customs of AlUla Old Town. Such as the generations-old annual cultural celebration, Tantora Celebration, which occurs every year on the 21st of December and marks the start of Winter at Tantora Festival.
This community celebration including feasting, traditional music and dance as the season officially crosses over into winter and the cool weather settles in.
Located right in the heart of AlUla within walking distance of the Incense Road Market, AlJadidah Arts District and the Oasis, Dar Tantora The House Hotel is perfectly located for those who like to explore on foot.

WHY LISTENING TO YOUR CUSTOMERS IS THE KEY TO GROWTH ACROSS THE GCC RETAIL SECTOR
By Halima Jumani – Director at Kibsons
With over 40 years of experience in the UAE, and covering both B2B wholesale and direct to consumer, we know that forming and sustaining long-term, trust-based sustainable relationships with customers is the foundation for any trade-based business growth vision.
Fortunately, we have witnessed so much progress within the ecommerce industry and shift in the consumer mindset during the past five years that we believe one of our keys to success has been our close contact with our customers and our attitude towards listening to feedback, taking it seriously, and implementing it into our operations strategy with speed and agility. Without doubt, this is instrumental in retaining customers in a highly competitive landscape.
Customers have access to your competitors with a single swipe. Price comparisons, feedback, reviews - it is all out there for them to make their buying decisions, and it is not surprising that transparency in company values, authenticity in how a business deals with issues and feedback, and a company’s true sustainability credentials, are increasingly an important element in the customer’s shopping choices.
Seeing the bigger picture and future trend forecasting is vital, but we cannot take our eyes off the micro - the circumstances our
customers find themselves in. Rising costs, lifestyle changes and more - all require a deeper understanding of their buying habits, customer experience, accessibility, and ease of transacting. In 2024, after four years of unprecedented global conditions, demand, and challenges for retailers, I know that those who will achieve growth and build for success this year will be the ones paying attention to what customers want, today, and using this knowledge to anticipate their needs tomorrow. Embracing a top-down mindset that is not just lip service, but essential for brand loyalty, goodwill and of course, sustainable growth for the business.
A brand promise cannot just exist on your marketing materials. It must be delivered and substantiated in service. How easy are you making it for your customers to transact with you? How robust are your payment, customer service and delivery pillars? Are you holding up your promises for speed, service, or quality? It’s not enough to simply provide the product, consumers are time poor and service conscious - if it isn’t working for them, they will absolutely tell you - but we must listen.
Meeting customers where they are extends beyond the digital realm. It also involves physical accessibility and proximity. Local retailers have a unique advantage in this regard, as they are embedded within
communities and can establish personal connections with customers. Without physical outlets, we are noticeable by not just our delivery vans but also deliberate community engagement and on-site activations, which is entrenched in our marketing strategies.
Listening to customers also means understanding and anticipating their needs and preferences, often before they are explicitly articulated. This requires leveraging data analytics and customer insights to identify emerging trends and tailor offerings accordingly. Listening to customers also necessitates a commitment to exceptional service and responsiveness. This entails providing personalised recommendations, addressing inquiries promptly, and resolving any issues or concerns efficiently and with a personalised touch.
Retailers must embrace innovation and new technologies to enhance the customer shopping experience. Listening to customers is a strategic imperative for local retailers seeking to thrive. By understanding customers, embracing digitalization, prioritising convenience, and accessibility, and delivering exceptional service, retailers both large and small can forge deep connections with their communities and foster long-term loyalty and success.

ADAPTING TO CONSUMER TRENDS IN THE UAE'S FOOD SERVICE SECTOR
By Jerome Mortel, COO of Sumo Sushi & Bento
In the ever-evolving landscape of the UAE’s food service industry, staying competitive requires more than just good food; it demands a keen understanding of changing consumer preferences and lifestyle trends. At Sumo Sushi & Bento, we've embraced these changes, adapting our offerings to meet the diverse and dynamic needs of our customers.
The UAE boasts a multicultural demographic that shapes the food industry in unique ways. Trends such as health consciousness, ethical eating, and digital integration are reshaping how restaurants operate. Consumers are increasingly looking for dining options that not only satisfy their palate but also align with their lifestyle choices and values.
One significant trend is the growing demand for healthier dining options. At Sumo Sushi & Bento, we’ve responded by incorporating a variety of health-conscious choices into our menu. This includes offering dishes with lower calories like salads and options of vegetarian dishes.
Our menu transparency lets customers make informed choices about what they eat, aligning with their health and wellness goals. Another critical area is ethical eating.
Consumers are more aware than ever of the environmental impact of their dietary choices. In response, we strive to sourcing our ingredients responsibly.
Digital technology plays a pivotal role in adapting to consumer trends. Sumo Sushi & Bento leverages digital platforms for both marketing and operations, including a userfriendly website, online ordering system, our sumo App and active social media presence. These tools help us engage with our customers directly and gauge their preferences and feedback in real-time.
Aligning with local festivals, holidays, and cultural events is another strategy we use to stay relevant. For instance, during Ramadan, we offer special Iftar menus that cater to the dietary requirements and preferences during the holy month. Similarly, our promotions around local events and holidays help draw in customers looking for a festive dining experience.
Staying competitive in the UAE’s food service sector requires a proactive approach to understanding and adapting to consumer trends. At Sumo Sushi & Bento, we continuously evolve our offerings and marketing strategies to align with our customers' changing preferences.
By staying attuned to eating trends, embracing sustainability, and leveraging technology, we not only meet the current needs of our customers but also anticipate future demands, ensuring that we remain at the forefront of the UAE’s culinary scene.

ATHENIAN STYLE AND SOPHISTICATION
Renowned Athenian Restaurant, Papaioannou
The acclaimed Athens-based seafood restaurant, Papaioannou, will open its first site beyond the Greek capital this summer in Mykonos, tucked away in the northwest of the Cycladic Island on Agios Stefanos beach.
A modern classic and local favourite, Papaioannou is a beacon of Athenian style and sophistication with its laidback atmosphere, best known for refined, authentic seafood, frequented by the Greek society.
Having first opened in the early 1990’s in Mikrolimano, Piraeus, the familyowned Papaioannou Restaurant has always been a local haunt for Athenians and appreciators of simple, high-quality seafood. Thirty years on, Papaioannou has expanded its offering with more Athenian restaurants situated in Kifissia, Piraeus and Vouliagmeni.
Opening in partnership with D.ream, leaders in the international hospitality industry (Bar des Prés, Il Gattopardo), and co-owners of international brands such as Zuma, Coya, Amazonico, the new Mykonos restaurant will be a day to night destination - ideal for those seeking respite from the summer crowds and parties, offering a sophisticated atmosphere and some of the best sunset views on the island.
Papaioannou Mykonos will open in one of the more discreet locations along Agios Stefanos to reflect the Greek tradition of long lunches with a focus on simple fare and beautiful surroundings. Open daily for lunch and dinner from 1:00pm to 1:00am, the restaurant will be a culinary oasis, focusing on classic Greek ingredients - olive oil, vegetables, fresh herbs and - the star of the plate - seafood which make up the core ethos of the restaurant’s menu.

Praised for preparing fresh fish from the lesser known parts of the Aegean, Executive Chef and Founder George Papaioannou only sources the finest ingredients for his restaurant. With accolades including the Greek ‘FNL Best Restaurant Award’, Chef Papaioannou is known for his inextricable links to local fishermen and farmers hailing from the Attica region, with whom he has worked with for years as well as his loyalty to traditional cooking techniques passed down through generations.
Chef Papaioannou’s suppliers include mostly local fishermen from the surrounding islands of North Evia, Skyros Island, Aigina Island, Kea Island, Sounion, Poros Island (best known for petrobarbouno: a variety of red mullet) and North Evia (specifically for the signature Crawfish).
Signature dishes include raw plates such as tartars, ceviches and crudo; sardines on the bone, grilled squid and steamed dusky grouper; a variety of seafood pasta dishes including the signature crawfish orzo; and fresh tomatoes and Chef Papaioannou’s legendary taramosalata. The new Mykonos menu will also offer meat dishes including Black Angus Beef Tenderloin and Tomahawk Steak - a first for the family-run-business in order to cater to an international clientele.
Leading the design for Papaioannou’s latest Mykonos venture will be Stones & Walls: Athens’ most reputable Interior Design Studio known for visually conceptualising Nobu Hotel Santorini, Beefbar Mykonos and Papaioannou Kifissia, among others. The double story restaurant’s pared-back interiors will be clean and contemporary, true to the island’s Cycladic architecture, incorporating the classic azure and white colour palette. The restaurant will additionally have seaside seating along the beacha first for the collection.

THE EVOLUTION OF PRECISION
MB&F UNVEILS THE GROUNDBREAKING LEGACY MACHINE SEQUENTIAL FLYBACK PLATINUM

In 2022, MB&F redefined the world of horology with the unveiling of the Legacy Machine Sequential EVO, a revolutionary twin chronograph that captivated collectors and earned the prestigious GPHG ‘Aiguille d’Or’ award. Conceived by horological genius Stephen McDonnell, this timepiece introduced multiple timing modes, allowing users to track everything from athletic events to culinary adventures with unprecedented precision.
The Legacy Machine Sequential EVO was designed with an additional, yet initially unlaunched, feature in mind: the flyback function. Over nine months of rigorous prototyping and six redesigns, McDonnell perfected this complex mechanism.
By incorporating a specially crafted jewelled roller into the flyback system, he ensured minimal friction and seamless functionality. This dedication culminated in the creation

of the LM Sequential Flyback Platinum, an extraordinary timepiece that blends innovative technology with timeless elegance.
The LM Sequential Flyback Platinum retains the dual chronograph layout of its predecessor, featuring seconds displays at 9 and 3 o’clock, and minutes displays at 11 and 1 o’clock. Each chronograph operates independently, with start/stop and reset pushers on either side of the case. The newly integrated flyback function enhances these capabilities, allowing for instantaneous resetting and restarting.
A standout feature is the Twinverter pusher at 9 o’clock, a "magic button" that inverts the start/stop status of both chronographs. This binary switch enables simultaneous operation or alternating starts and stops, vastly expanding the chronograph's functionality.
Powering this intricate mechanism is a unique movement that connects two independent chronographs to a single escapement and oscillator, overcoming the typical energy losses of traditional chronographs. The patented internally-jewelled vertical clutches ensure exceptional energy efficiency and precision.
The LM Sequential Flyback Platinum is not just a timekeeping instrument; it is a testament to MB&F’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of horological innovation, combining cutting-edge technology with luxurious craftsmanship.
Each element, from the sumptuous materials like Mikado, Duchess satin, and Crepes, to the intricate lacework and floral embroidery, exudes sophistication and beauty, making it a masterpiece of modern watchmaking.

GARDEN FUTURES
DESIGNING WITH NATURE
EXHIBITION AT VANDALORUM MUSEUM OF ART AND DESIGN

Vandalorum Museum of Art and Design presents Garden Futures: Designing with Nature, the first exhibition that explores the history, present, and future of gardens from a global perspective.
The exhibition investigates the origins of today's garden ideals and emerging models in envisioning a better future. For many artists, designers, and landscape architects, the garden serves as a laboratory for new ideas.
In an era marked by climate crisis, globalization, and food supply uncertainty, the garden has become a democratic experimental ground for sustainability, biodiversity, and social justice. The exhibition addresses these questions, and many more, using a broad range of examples from art, design, everyday culture, and landscape architecture – from deckchairs to vertical urban farms, from contemporary community gardens to living buildings, from artistic projects to naturalistic refuges.
The exhibition is produced by the Vitra Design Museum, the Wüstenrot Foundation, and the Nieuwe Instituut, in collaboration with Vandalorum. It is designed by the award-winning design duo FormaFantasma (Italy, Guest of Honour at Stockholm Furniture Fair 2024) and features works by over 100 artists, designers, and landscape architects.
THE GARDEN AS PARADISE
The exhibition begins with an exploration of the garden as an idealized space. Wherever people carve out a piece of nature to create a garden, its design reveals their relationship with nature, as individuals or as a community.

Throughout history, the garden has been a place where practical work coexists with deep symbolic, philosophical, or even religious significance.
THE GARDEN AS A MIRROR OF SOCIETY
Gardens reflect a society's values, cultural development, as well as commercial and political changes. The second section of the exhibition illustrates how private gardens are intricately connected to society. It explores, for example, how ideals of self-sufficiency have manifested in urban areas throughout history, or how many plants in Western gardens have roots in colonialism.
THE GARDEN AS A TESTING GROUND FOR NEW IDEAS
What guides our thinking and decisions in garden design? What ideals do we uphold, what do we strive for, and why are gardens so appealing to us? These questions are explored in the third part of the exhibition through stories of pioneering garden creators from around the world. Each approaches gardening as a laboratory for new ideas.
THE WORLD AS A GARDEN
Traditionally, gardens have been considered sanctuaries where people create a tamed version of wild nature. However, the current situation forces us to ask, who needs protection and from whom? There are no areas on Earth untouched by human activity. As the consequences of human actions inexorably transform our environment, the entire planet becomes a garden that we must cultivate and care for.
PIET OUDOLF AT VANDALORUM
The monumental garden created by Dutch garden designer Piet Oudolf for Vandalorum, to be completed in spring 2024, is a central part of the exhibition. Oudolf is a pioneer in the movement that since the 1980s has advocated for alternatives to decorative and strictly maintained gardens. Inspiration is drawn from the vegetation of nature, focusing on perennials, grasses, and shrubs traditionally not considered garden plants.

CUSTOM LINE LAUNCHES THREE NEW SUPERYACHTS
Three new Custom Line superyachts have taken to the sea at the Ferretti Group Superyacht Yard in Ancona in less than a month. M/Y AT ONE, the nineteenth Custom Line Navetta 30 hull, touched the water for the first time at a ceremony attended by the owner and his family, who shared this happy day with the entire Custom Line team.
The result of a design process involving the Product Strategy Department for the exterior styling and the Ferretti Group Engineering Department, M/Y AT ONE has interiors by ACPV ARCHITECTS Antonio Citterio Patricia Viel and exteriors by Filippo Salvetti.
They were joined by the Custom Line Atelier, which provided strategic interior design consulting to interpret the style desired by the owner from the EMEA area. With a length of 28.43 m and a beam of 7.3 m, this superyacht in the brand’s displacement line features ambitious volumes while remaining light and
elegant at sea. Key features of the yacht are her timeless aesthetics and forwardthinking styling.
The exteriors feature an extended sweep of horizontal lines towards the bow, giving the yacht a sleek and dynamic silhouette. In the interiors, the colour palette juxtaposes muted colours and brighter hues with contrasting tones that range from soft shades of white and beige to elegant greys and browns, creating original contrasts with the orange featured on some of the freestanding furniture. The furniture and furnishings feature fine natural materials such as nubuck leather and matt-finish white travertine marble, creating a style that’s both contemporary and exclusive.
The thirty-first hull in the Custom Line Navetta 33 displacement line was launched with the name M/Y QUEEN J III, at a ceremony attended by the owners based in the EMEA area. This made-to-measure creation is the result
of collaboration between the Strategic Product Committee – which handled the exterior styling – and the Ferretti Group Engineering Department, whose architects and designers created the interiors with the support of the Custom Line Atelier.
An emblem of authentic refinement and light-touch sophistication, this superyacht – 33 m long and 7.52 m in the beam – has a majestic, elegant profile. There was a special focus on the hull technology and specifically the innovative bulbous bow, which ensures best-in-class seaworthiness and stability, as well as a range of up to 2,000 nautical miles.
In the chic, pared-down design of the interiors, warm, rich colours – like brown, burgundy and bronze – are set off against the darker, more seductive tones of black and lava grey, giving the settings depth and style and echoing the owner’s strong personality and refined taste. The furnishings feature unique, high-quality

materials including white travertine marble, American walnut and leather.
A new Custom Line 106’, named M/Y OUR RED SEA, was launched on May 6 with the owner family in attendance. The twenty-first hull in the brand’s planing line is ready to set sail in the Middle East-based owner’s favourite cruising destinations.
This superyacht is the result of collaboration between the Ferretti Group Engineering Department for the exterior styling and the Custom Line Atelier for the masterful interior design, working in constant, direct contact with the customer to interpret his style preferences.
Custom Line 106’ embodies Made in Italy excellence and radiates a luminous beauty conferred on the yacht by the natural light that permeates and amplifies the spaces on board. A masterful combination of aesthetics and comfort, this 32.82 m hull with a beam of 7.4 m features generous spaces and clean, rigorous lines, creating a sense of pared-down refinement that pervades every setting on the yacht.
The perfect architectural balance between the exteriors and interiors is the result of interconnecting surfaces and flowing volumes from bow to stern, eliminating the boundaries between spaces.
The chromatic harmony achieved in the interiors is based on the use of neutral, pale colours in shades that play on different nuances of sand, bronze and white, set off against the velvety notes of blue, aquamarine and petrol featured on some of the freestanding pieces. The yacht’s sophisticated style is also evident in the furnishings, with fine, sophisticated materials including Taj Mahal and Calacatta Gold marble, nubuck leather and maple wood.

JEKTA UNVEILS FIRST INTERIORS OF PHA-ZE 100 REGIONAL AMPHIBIOUS AIRFRAME
TRAVELLER AND CORPORATE CABIN STYLING LOOK TO THE PAST FOR AN ELEGANT FUTURE
JEKTA, the Switzerland-based developer of the PHA-ZE 100, Passenger Hydro Aircraft - Zero Emission 100 amphibious aircraft, has unveiled the first interiors for its economy class Traveller and full executive Corporate cabin configurations. The interiors have been designed for passenger comfort, operational durability,
and ultimate elegance, with each layout, material, and styling combining the glorious past and sophisticated future of amphibious flight.
Mindful of the particular needs of operations that alight on and take off from both water and land, the interior
designs acknowledge and incorporate the requirements of the innovative, new JEKTA family of amphibious airframes. The design process involved simulating how passengers, crew, pilots, operators, and maintenance teams will interact with the aircraft. The ergonomics focus on implementing cutting-edge solutions to

deliver a combination of comfort, safety, and functionality within an airframe that provides multiple operating parameters. The interiors will adapt to support a range of applications, including multi-leg, regional passenger flights, experiential high-end tourism voyages, or intense roadshow itineraries for corporates and governments. Cargo, medevac, VVIP, and search and rescue variants will follow.
Industrial design studio MBVision applied its twenty years of aviation experience to integrate simplicity, modularity and lightness with durability, cleanliness, new materials, and functionality. The multidisciplinary team worked closely
with partners, suppliers, and potential customers to shape the style. Design highlights include thin modular seating, which offers superior comfort while light in weight, and an aft lavatory, which will feature in the first production airframe.
As a non-pressurized airframe, the PHAZE 100 design features are intended to shape an on-board experience which blends contemporary aviation form with elements from the marine sector: woodenstyle flooring, galley-style refreshment or bar areas and expansive panoramic windows through which light pours emulate the at-sea experience, giving a brand-new feeling of space and freedom within the aircraft.

Connectivity is incorporated, enabling passengers and crew to be productive, entertained and in touch, even on short flights. With one eye on weight and one on aesthetics, JEKTA is working with pioneering material libraries to integrate next-generation flexible screens in the upholstery. The interior design also augments the aircraft's sustainable ambitions by incorporating the zeroemissions concept into the aircraft interior. Selected materials are eco-friendly and can be recycled, yet do not compromise quality.
“We believe these interiors express our ambition of creating a disruptive, original style of travel within a new mode of transport. We have created an elegant cabin for airlines flying multiple legs daily alongside a stylish cabin that adheres to the principles of being environmentally friendly internally and externally. This highlights our commitment to providing a zero-emissions airframe that supports many applications,” explains Max Pinucci, who heads industrial design for JEKTA. “Our interiors follow all the necessary certification requirements yet set new standards of elegance and functionality to create an unparalleled on-board experience. We want our customers not just to fly but to feel that they are travelling in an environment designed around their needs, comfort, and safety. At the same time, we are meeting the operators' needs in terms of ease of maintenance, operability, and profitability.”
Gayo Aviation, the global provider of private and specialist aviation services, will receive the first Corporate cabins, and MEHAIR, the Indian operator, will initially welcome the Traveller cabin to connect communities living around water.

GAMING STARTUPS CAN MAKE THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE, SAYS TECH INVESTOR
As the industry grows rapidly, Mirakhmedov urges founders to focus on social impact to create value beyond entertainment
Middle East startups in the booming gaming industry have the power to drive positive real-world impact, and a prominent tech investor says they should seize this opportunity to increase their significance.
Abdumalik Mirakhmedov, Director and co-founder of UAE tech venture company, Scalo Technologies, says gaming startups are well-positioned to be both profitable and meaningful by considering their social impact.
"With great power comes responsibility," says Mirakhmedov. "Founders who don't factor in societal impact are missing a major chance to create value beyond entertainment."
The global gaming market, currently valued at $282 billion, is spiraling with 3.32 billion gamers expected this year. Projections see it reaching $363 billion by 2027, with the MENA region alone having 80 million gamers.
While games provide fun, accomplishment, connection and escape, Mirakhmedov says they have an evolving role. "Games are transforming into platforms for positive change by
harnessing their immersive capabilities to address real-world challenges," he explains.
Set up in Singapore in 2020, Scalo Technologies chose to base its operations in Dubai last year in view of the UAE’s vibrant ecosystem. Among its investments is Hexacore, a mobile game developer and publisher specialising in hybrid mobile web3 games.
Mirakhmedov says mission-driven companies attract top talent and investments from socially-conscious backers, and he points to research which shows 70% of Gen Z gamers would switch brands supporting social good causes.
"The gaming industry is rapidly changing, with sustainability initiatives now crucial. By embracing impact, startups connect with a conscious audience, unlock new markets, and future-proof their business," he says.
"Games can teach, promote understanding and motivate action on issues like climate change, mental health and cultural diversity. The potential to 'gamify' social good is exciting for impact-focused investors like us."
