Within my office and at the Board meetings, we say the three C’s regularly (Catalyst, Convener, Champion). Within the Chamber world, industry leaders describe a three P’s organization (Pageants, Parades, and Pancake breakfasts) or a three C’s Chamber. A three P’s Chamber is how many of us recall the Chambers of the 1980s: throwing events, fundraising, a ‘good old boy’s club.’

On the other hand, a three C’s Chamber is one which actively engages with leadership and government stakeholders, taking part in a two-way conversation on a multitude of topics and changes. An instance of this is the conversations we’ve had about the sign ordinances that the City Council is adopting. We’ve had great communication with the city manager, and he has taken many of our suggestions into consideration and worked them into the code.

Another ‘C’ initiative that we have recently undertaken is the creation of CEO roundtables. In the midst of the pandemic, a community leader shared with me that they had not had the ability to connect with other leaders and build strong relationships. This led to the Chamber convening roundtables where leaders in similar roles had a chance to network with one another in smaller, consistent environment. The first two groups are comprised of those in leadership with more than 200 employees and those leaders work on behalf of a board. Both groups will begin meeting monthly in the next few weeks.

We plant to implement several other roundtables and are currently considering multigenerational businesses and owners in the trades. If you are a leader looking to convene with others, please reach out! We plan to institute more roundtables as they are called for. After a century of promoting our business community, we know that the only thing that stays the same in business is change.

Tanya Frazier is the 2022 Chamber Board Chairman. For decades, she has been a strong positive force in Mason County. Tanya, along with firefighter husband Mark, have raised thousands of dollars for the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society, the Scott Firefighting Stair Climb Fundraiser, while previously serving as chair for Mason General Hospital Foundation’s Fantasy Forest, and currently with the Martha Reed Foundation. She never hesitates in volunteering to accelerate others' fundraising efforts and just this last month helped with the baseball auction.

Professionally, Tanya serves as the executive director of Crossroads Housing. Since Tanya’s arrival, the organization increased their housing and their funding exponentially thanks to her focus on grant funding.

Crossroads provides family emergency shelter and temporary housing, education, guidance, and comprehensive case management often leading to referrals for specialized care. A drastic increase in housing crisis due to loss of job or illness directly connected with COVID-19 led to Crossroads tripling its team and working tirelessly to secure grant funding, successfully providing rental assistance, diverting clients from homelessness, and increasing emergency shelter programs. To date, nearly $1M has been paid to 84 Mason County landlords on behalf of 120 households, to help prevent them from becoming homeless. “Landlords love me,” she laughs.

Near the end of February, Crossroads conducted the Point in Time (PIT) Count. “The PIT Count is a driving force in how state, federal and local funding is distributed in the fight against homelessness,” says Tanya. The PIT Count in January of 2020, accounted for 111 homeless in our community. This year staff took a hands-on approach by hitting the streets and woods at 6:00am. Their efforts paid off, as the count increased to 254 homeless individuals. She laments that although a significant increase was captured, it still isn’t a full picture.

"Tanya is driven to do great things in our community," Says Chamber CEO Heidi McCutcheon. "Her business acumen coupled with her knowledge and success within the nonprofit industry makes her an ideal Chair of the Chamber Board. I believe the Chamber and our business community will see great achievements under her leadership."

If it feels like you're dumping your paycheck at the pump, you're not alone. Unfortunately, it's about to get worse. At the beginning of the year, Washington State had the second highest motor fuel tax rates in the nation. While several states decreased their gas taxes, the recently (and rare) even-numbered year transportation package is chock full of tax and fee increases that will be paid for by taxpayers.

Soon, drivers can expect to pay at least 85.5 cents in gas tax per gallon, a nearly 30% increase over the now 67.8 cents. Add this to the already increasing costs due to what’s happening in Ukraine, and the answer is pointing toward gas prices of $6-7 per gallon this summer.

We can also expect to pay higher fees since the transportation package relies on fee increases of up to 400%. An example of this is the increase of license plate fees on motorcycles and cars. If a driver wants an original license plate, rather than paying the current $10, it will soon be $50, while a replacement license plate will cost $30. If you own a motorcycle, an original license plate will increase from $4 to $20, and $12 for a replacement. These increases go into effect in July.

Enhanced driver’s license and identicards will also cost more. For a six-year license, the fee will increase from $24 to $42. For an eightyear license, the fee will increase from $32 to $56. This begins in October.

The stolen vehicle check fee will also increase. If someone moves to Washington from a different state, they will need a replacement title.

The state requires a mandatory check to make sure the vehicle is not stolen before they issue the replacement title.

The transportation package increased the fee from $15 to $50 starting in July, and then further to $75 in 2026.

Senator Sheldon to Retire Reprinted with permission from Washington Forest Protection Association

State Senator Tim Sheldon (D-Potlatch), the Washington State Legislature’s longest-serving member, won’t seek another term in the fall. Sheldon announced his retirement the last day of the 2022 Legislative Session.

Sheldon, with roots in the timber sector and whose family are private forest landowners, grew up along Hood Canal. It was his lifelong understanding of local priorities and focus on policies that impact small-town economies that made him among the few Democrats representing a rural district.

Elected to office in 1990, Sheldon has represented the 35th legislative district first as a State Representative the first decade and then State Senator for more than two decades after. A Seattle Times article described Sheldon as having an “independent streak” and a Kitsap Sun story noted that “while he’s always run as a Democrat, he was never afraid to go against the party, even caucusing at times with Republicans.”

Between 2012–2017, Sheldon and then State Senator Rodney Tom (D-Medina) crossed the aisle and caucused with Republicans. Sheldon, Tom, and about two dozen Republicans formed the bipartisan Majority Coalition Caucus. The move created a functional Senate majority for Republicans. Many of Sheldon’s Democratic colleagues chafed at his actions. But Sheldon said that while he would always maintain his Democratic party affiliation, he opposed his party’s leadership stance on taxation and other issues.

Among his legislative achievements, Sheldon lists his work in the 1990s to support the forestry sector and workers impacted by the listing of the Northern spotted owl as an endangered species and the loss of timber harvests throughout the coastal areas. Sheldon also worked to protect the identities of juvenile sex abuse victims and was a strident supporter of transportation investments that helped reduce congestion and shorten commute times.

Green Diamond Resource Company officials recently announced the retirement of Patti Case (pictured center) at the beginning of May 2022 and introduced Jason Callahan, who will serve was as policy and communications manager for Green Diamond Resource Company.

Patti Case has served as the company’s public affairs manager for the past 20 years. Her first day at the company was the Monday after her graduation from Shelton High School; she started in the mailroom and worked in Shelton and Seattle in the summers while attending the University of Washington. She ran her own marketing communications firm before returning to Shelton and Simpson in 1994 to handle local public relations and policy work. The job grew as Green Diamond expanded into Oregon, Montana, and six southeastern states. In Washington, she is well known working with lawmakers on both sides of the aisle in Olympia to advance wise stewardship of working forests and rural jobs, while demanding environmental excellence.

A leader in our community, she has served countless years on numerous boards, including the Chamber Board of Directors, where she twice served as President. She was a founder of the Chamber’s Government Affairs Committee; its purpose is to serve as the voice of business at all levels of government to include monitoring, drafting, and advocating for business solutions and to ensure that governmental decisions and actions positively impact and support our member’s businesses. After creating a committee based on those objectives, it

was no surprise when she announced her candidacy for 35th Legislative District House of Representatives for MacEwen’s vacated seat as he runs for Senate.

“It’s been an honor and a pleasure to work on behalf of our iconic forest industry,” she stated. “While it’s bittersweet to move on, I know the company, particularly in Shelton and Mason County, will be in good hands with Jason and the rest of our public affairs team while I look forward to serving our community in an exciting new capacity.”

A veteran government relations professional, Callahan most recently worked as director of governmental relations at Washington Forest Protection Association, where he represented working forest landowners throughout the state on priority issues affecting their investments and the forest environment. Prior to that, Callahan served as non-partisan counsel to the Washington State House of Representatives, covering natural resources issues.

Callahan will be based at the Shelton office handling external engagement in Washington, Oregon, Montana, and throughout the southern states, advancing company priorities, building sound policy in the state legislative, regulatory, and local governmental arenas, working with governmental, community, and tribal stakeholders.

Business After Hours Heats Up in Winter Months

Owner Jonathan Gagliardi provided a generous spread for Chamber members, elected officials, and business owners. Boss of the Year Holly Cahoon and her talented stylists opened the doors to third-generation salon 2nd Street Design Studio, pampering guests with paraffin hand dips and complimentary waxing services. Darling heart shaped delicacies and sweets topped of the evening as folks gathered around to congratulation the evening’s many door prize winners.

If nothing more, the pandemic showed us the importance of internet access and connectivity. As society becomes more dependent on technology, digital inequality is increasingly a problem for rural areas of the country. The benefits of access to high-speed internet are numerous and touch all aspects of modern life for all ages: telehealth, remote learning, working from home, and Zoom are a part of our everyday vernacular and are only made possible with fast and reliable high-speed internet. In Mason County, Hood Canal Communications (HCC) has been at the forefront of providing not only internet access, but fiber, to those of us in the most rural areas.

In early 2021, HCC finished up the $2.3M Connect Cushman project, privately contributing an additional $352K that brought fiber connectivity in Hoodsport up to Lake Cushman’s furthest point.

“Our priority is connecting our community with the rest of the world,” said General Manager Mike Oblizalo.

“These stable, high-speed connections are vital and each project that we complete has paved the way for other granting opportunities.”

Since bringing fiber to Lake Cushman, HCC has continued to provide access to those in areas that no one else seems interested in. In fact, HCC has aggressively pursued and received multiple state and federal grants, both

multiple state and federal grants, both directly and in partnership, to ensure that even the most rural communities have access to gigabit broadband service. Not only do homeowners benefit directly from the infrastructure, it also helps companies expand beyond their traditional service areas into neighboring areas which are currently unserved.

Following the Cushman project, HCC was awarded a grant to bring broadband connectivity to the Mason/Thurston County border, providing service to both residences and businesses, offering gigabit (1,000 Mbps) broadband internet, HD streaming television, and critical phone service. The entire project was built using high-speed fiber optic lines, extending all the way to become fiber to the home.

Most recently, HCC partnered with PUD1 for a $10.1M broadband grant to build a fiber network along US Highway 101 into Jefferson County up to Brinnon.

The project will provide fiber to the home and close the digital divide for rural residents and businesses that are currently unserved. Additionally, the infrastructure is being built to accommodate future expansion and faster speeds, initially providing internet speeds up to a gig (1,000 Mbps) synchronous.

“We are excited to serve these areas.

Many areas in our community are broadband deserts, so we know that we are improving the lives of residents through connectivity,” says Oblizalo. He goes on to say that community support is paramount. “We are grateful to have many community supporters including homeowners, businesses, tribal officials, school districts, public agencies, public officials, and even a local Community Task Force on Broadband. We rely on those partnerships and supporters.”

Hood Canal Communications is a local service provider with approximately 7,000 residential and business customers in Mason County.

SUMMER BEAUTIFICATION IS HAPPENING NOW

Call it small town. Call it curbside appeal. Call it classy. Whatever you call it, the bright blooms that adorn city streets and gateways offer a warm welcome to visitors and enhance the thoroughfares traveled by residents daily.

Now a staple of charm and hospitality, the Chamber added the flower baskets to its annual program in 1999.

The hopeful, sunny days this spring seem to have many residents looking ahead to the summer season. The Chamber began receiving phone calls and walk-ins in April from folks asking if the oversized flower baskets will be going up again this year. Yes… and very soon!

There is a tremendous cost in materials, maintenance, and manpower to upkeep the summer and winter décor and funding for this program is raised exclusively through our annual campaign. The Chamber relies on the generosity of our community to help us make this point of pride a reality. Donations can be made toward beautification overall or, for $275 each, an individual flower basket can be sponsored by a business or designated in memoriam of a loved one. The amount collected this year will determine how many baskets will be hung the following year. Please consider making a gift to helps us meet our $20,000 goal!

Taking Cleaning to the Next Level Emmanuel Reyes | Owner/Operator of Bella Casa Cleaning Services After being cooped up indoors for the winter, it’s almost time to fling open the windows, shoo away the cobwebs, and tackle your annual spring cleaning. Let’s admit it… cleaning is a pretty easy thing to do. Many people may not enjoy it or have the time, but the truth is that anybody can clean. Now if we talk about proper cleaning, that takes it to a new level. Proper cleaning takes time, experience, common sense, skill, and a lot of passion. If you are paying someone to do the cleaning for you and if they don’t have these must-have principles, you may not be getting your money’s worth.

To assist you, take a look at the deep cleaning checklist I’ve prepared to the right.

After reviewing, you should know if you are getting the desired results.

It is difficult (if not impossible) to maintain a house or commercial facility dust free and entirely clean at all times. If you take five minutes to walk around and review the areas included on this checklist, it will give you a general idea of what the rest of the building looks like. If you have a cleaning company that is taking the time to clean areas that are often overlooked by visitors, they will more likely do a great job at more visible areas.

Considering hiring a cleaning company?

A cleaning company should properly vacuum, sweep, dust, and mop. These are basic cleaning tasks, but there is much more to cleaning. When contracting for housekeeping, make sure there is a cleaning plan for all areas needing to be detailed regularly. This typically known as a “rotation system.” For instance, using a regular bi-weekly maid service as an example, all bathrooms and the kitchen would be detailed in one visit, rotating dusting and vacuuming the following visit.

Check doors and cabinet fronts for any food, makeup, handprints, etc.

Light fixtures, including light bulbs, should be dust free.

Check if toilet bowl is clean, especially the base and the bottom the seat.

Make sure the backsplash has been wiped down as well as countertops.

Check that the correct cleaners are being used to properly clean and maintain surfaces.

Chamber Partners with Google to Support Business Having a healthy economy is important to our community. Because of that, the Chamber provides programs and access to tools to help our businesses succeed.

Throughout the year, our members have access to webinars, livestreams, workshops, and expert speakers on a variety of relevant topics.

The Chamber is a certified partner of Google and the Grow with Google initiative, which is aimed at creating access to training and tools to help people grow their careers and businesses. In March we hosted digital series program which was led by one of Google’s internal SEO experts.

The workshop provided a behind-thescenes view into how Google approaches SEO for its own sites and taught practical strategies to help drive traffic from Google Search.

On May 5 the Chamber will host its next digital partner series workshop, featuring professionals from Google and Canva. The hour-long program will explore what makes a strong brand, why it's important for business, and how to create a style guide and brand kit to build better brand consistency and attract more customers.
