Powers Music & Recording Powers Music & Recording

As band programs begin for the new school year, many students are picking up an instrument for the first time Powers Music & Recording, which opened in August 2024, has quickly become a hub where musicians of all ages can find the tools, support, and inspiration to grow

What started with fewer than twenty guitars has grown into a full-service music store offering guitars, band and orchestral instruments, keyboards, drums, merchandise, and a professional recording studio In addition to its wide range of instruments, the shop provides lessons, repairs services, and a rental program designed to make participation in music accessible

Owner Trent Powers built the business around affordability and access “Kids shouldn’t be sidelined by a bad instrument or a high price Our goal is to get them something dependable, at

a cost that works for their family ” That philosophy shows on the sales floor, where quality instruments are available at a range of price points, and in the rental program, which allows students to take home a school-ready instrument right away Every Each rental payment builds equity toward purchase, making it possible for a student to graduate with an instrument they can truly call their own

Beyond the rental counter, Powers Music & Recording offers private lessons for guitar, bass, drums, and piano, as well as expert repair services for both band instruments and guitars

The in-house recording studio is fully treated for clean sound and equipped with Pro Tools the industry standard for recording, mixing, and mastering Musicians can book by the hour or day, and also find support in navigating copyright protections, distribution, royalties, and release strategies

By keeping instruments, lessons, and recording services local, Powers Music & Recording makes it easier for students and musicians alike to explore their talents close to home From a middle schooler learning their first notes to a band ready to lay down tracks, the shop is helping Mason County’s music scene hit all the right notes

THE BEAR GULCH FIRE AND HOODSPORT: STRENGTH AMIDST UNCERTAINTY

The Bear Gulch Fire, which started July 6 on the north side of Lake Cushman, has burned more than 10,000 acres in Olympic National Forest Humancaused and still under investigation, the fire has been slow to contain As of early September, just nine percent was under control, with 147 personnel still assigned to the incident While no structures have been lost, the fire has shaped both the landscape and the economy of Mason County for more than two months.

Cooler temperatures, higher humidity, and forecasted rainfall have recently helped calm fire activity. Even so, extensive closures remain in effect, including the northern half of Lake Cushman, Staircase Campground, and popular recreation areas in Olympic National Forest and Olympic National Park. For local businesses, the closures landed at the worst possible time the middle of summer, when tourism brings the highest traffic of the year.

The impact on Hoodsport’s business community has been unmistakable At the Visitor Information Center, walk-in counts dropped by more than 40 percent beginning in late July and lasting through mid-August, while phone inquiries fell nearly 20 percent With access cut off to signature trails and campgrounds, many families postponed or canceled their plans altogether Even when skies cleared, the perception that the area was “closed” weighed heavily on the season

“The story of Hoodsport is resilience. We look out for one another, keep guests safe, and get back to welcoming visitors the moment it is prudent to do so. ”
- Katherine Yackel, YSS Dive

That loss of traffic rippled across lodging, dining, retail, and recreation July and August are the months when operators rely on strong revenues to carry them through fall and winter Missing even a few weekends can set businesses back for months Some owners stocked cautiously, trimmed hours on smoky days, or shifted staff to cover uncertain schedules Visitors who might normally book confidently instead hesitated, unsure what conditions might be like once they arrived

Still, Hoodsport showed resilience At YSS Dive, owner Katherine Yackel described the impact on her business “The fire slowed our foot traffic and forced a few tough reschedules,” Yackel said, “but the story of Hoodsport is resilience We look out for one another, keep guests safe, and get back to welcoming visitors the moment it is prudent to do so ”

Throughout the fire, the Hoodsport Visitor Information Center became a trusted resource for travelers Staff and volunteers stayed in daily contact with the Forest Service and National Park Service, sharing accurate updates and guiding families to alternatives Visitors were encouraged to explore nearby state parks like Dosewallips, Potlatch, and Twanoh, or to enjoy cultural and family-friendly attractions across Mason County Many guests expressed gratitude for the support, with some stopping in just to say thank you for the guidance and hospitality

Clear communication has proven essential Misperceptions of closure can linger long after skies have cleared, delaying recovery and keeping visitors away By providing timely updates and consistently reinforcing what is open, the Visitor Center and its partners have helped maintain confidence and direct traffic to businesses that remain ready to serve

The Bear Gulch Fire has been a reminder of how quickly uncertainty can ripple through a tourism economy. Yet it has also underscored the strength of Mason County. Businesses adapted, volunteers stepped up, and neighbors supported one another. While recovery will take time, this summer will be remembered not only for disruption but for the resilience and cooperation that carried Hoodsport through.

TAYLOR SHELLFISH TAYLOR SHELLFISH

Smokehouse Brings Local Flavor Home Smokehouse Brings Local Flavor Home

Taylor Shellfish Farms is charting a new course with the addition of a smokehouse and cannery at its Shelton headquarters. This project blends more than 130 years of aquaculture heritage with a modern “tide to table” approach It also creates fresh opportunities to enjoy locally raised shellfish while keeping more of the value in Mason County

freshness but also further purifies the shellfish to meet Taylor’s high quality standards With the new smokehouse in place, Taylor Shellfish can now raise, process, and package shellfish entirely within Mason County

The company began in the 1890s when the Taylor family first farmed Olympia oysters on Puget Sound From those beginnings, Taylor Shellfish has grown into the largest shellfish operation in the United States, with farms across Western Washington and a global reputation for sustainable aquaculture Shelton has remained the heart of the business, and the new smokehouse signals both a return to tradition and a bold step forward it ensures that seafood harvested along Taylor’s shorelines can be smoked, canned, and shipped from Mason County.

The smokehouse now makes it possible to prepare one of Taylor’s most-loved products, the Ekone line of smoked oysters, mussels, and other tinned shellfish, right on site Each tin is hand packed, gently smoked, and sealed in Shelton before reaching markets near and far For customers, this means a world-class product with a clear connection to Shelton For Mason County, it means more of the economic benefit remains close to home

Inside the Shelton facility, large bins of freshly harvested oysters arrive straight from the tidelands They move through a scrubbing process to remove sand and debris and then travel by conveyor belt to a sorting line, where skilled employees examine each oyster and remove empty shells or damaged pieces. The cleaned oysters are weighed and routed through an automated system that separates them into weight-specific baskets Those baskets go to a brand-new wet storage facility where massive holding tanks lower pallets of oysters into sanitized seawater using cranes This storage method not only extends

This investment carries several layers of significance It creates and sustains jobs for local residents and demonstrates Taylor’s continued commitment to Mason County’s economy It also reinforces the strength of the Taylor brand, long associated with sustainability and stewardship By expanding operations in Shelton, the company further ties its products to the tidelands nourished by South Puget Sound’s waters

The project highlights Taylor Shellfish’s ability to adapt As markets shift and interest in shelfstable seafood grows, the company responds with a facility that meets consumer needs while staying true to its roots. Smoked and canned shellfish are not only convenient and flavorful but extend the reach of Mason County’s aquaculture far beyond the fresh seafood case A tin of Ekone oysters in New York or Tokyo carries a story that begins in Shelton

For more than a century, Taylor Shellfish has balanced innovation with care for the waters that sustain its farms The new smokehouse adds another chapter to that story, offering new ways for people to enjoy local shellfish while strengthening the connection between Mason County and the global seafood market It is a reminder that the tides of Puget Sound shape not just the shoreline but also livelihoods, traditions, and the future of food

Visitors are welcome at Taylor Shellfish Farm’s Seafood Market, located at 130 SE Lynch Road in Shelton Open daily from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm, the market offers fresh-made chowder, tins of smoked goods, and a wide selection of shellfish raised right here at home

Taylor Shellfish Farms is a fifthgeneration, family-owned company proudly rooted in Mason County Since the 1890s, they have been growing oysters, clams, mussels, and geoduck in South Sound tidelands while supporting local jobs and practicing sustainable aquaculture Their team manages farming, processing, and retail operations in Shelton, remaining a cornerstone of both the local economy and community

Meet Claudia Suastegui

CHAMBER AMBASSADOR

When Claudia Suastegui relocated from Idaho to Shelton three years ago, she was determined to find meaningful ways to get involved She discovered the Chamber’s Ambassador Committee and quickly recognized it as the perfect opportunity to connect with her new community Since then, she has been an active Ambassador, combining her professional role as Senior Program Director at the Shelton Family YMCA with her passion for building relationships

For Claudia, serving as an Ambassador has been both purposeful and personal She describes herself as a natural connector, includer, and relationship-builder, and those strengths shine through in her work with the Chamber. She is especially inspired by the Blue Zones principle that strong social connections are vital to longevity and well-being. It’s something she embraces both in her career and her volunteer work

Her most memorable moment as an Ambassador came during a business outreach call A routine check-in became a

30-minute conversation about life, during which the member felt heard and ultimately developed their own plan for positive change Claudia sees this as a powerful example of the impact a simple, genuine connection can have

Beyond her committee work, Claudia makes it a priority to support local businesses whether by visiting them, referring others, or enthusiastically promoting them within her network She is also committed to showing appreciation in small but meaningful ways, like sending thank-you notes, leaving reviews, and completing surveys “Those little things matter,” she shared “They build trust, strengthen relation-ships, and contribute to economic growth.”

Through her service, Claudia has become a trusted presence in the Chamber community Her thoughtful approach reflects her belief that connection and care are at the center of both personal and community well-being

If you ’ re a new member or looking for ways to become more involved, Claudia is always ready to welcome you, answer questions, and help you find your place within the Chamber community Don’t hesitate to introduce yourself at the next event

Eat Local Eat Local

September marks Washington State’s official “Eat Local Month ” For many communities across the state, this means celebrating farms and harvest In Mason County, our story is a little different Here, “local” means world-renowned shellfish farms, family-run eateries, small-scale producers, and a thriving community farmers market Together, these businesses form a vibrant food system that nourishes residents, attracts visitors, and sustains jobs

When you think of Mason County, chances are seafood comes to mind Our shellfish growers are among the most respected in the world, supplying markets far beyond Washington Yet, they remain deeply connected to our local economy Every oyster shucked or clam harvested from Hood Canal represents more than food It is wages for workers, contracts for suppliers, and tax revenue for community services

Alongside aquaculture, small farms and local eateries are creating new opportunities From seasonal produce and farm stands to bakeries, breweries, wineries, and food trucks, these businesses bring flavor and diversity to our community Supporting them is an investment in growth Every dollar spent locally circulates multiple times, fueling everything from payroll to partnerships As a Chamber, we highlight local producers, encourage collaboration, and advocate for the policies that allow them to thrive

Food connects us Whether it’s at the local farmers market on a Saturday morning, a family dinner featuring local seafood, or a Chamber networking event with Mason County wine and beer on the menu, sharing food creates community The Chamber is proud to bring people together in these spaces We connect growers, restaurant owners, nonprofit leaders, and policymakers to talk about opportunities and challenges Issues like permitting reform, workforce shortages, and infrastructure investment are not abstract concepts; they are daily realities for the businesses that put food on our tables By creating opportunities for dialogue, we ensure those voices are heard and those challenges are addressed

NOURISHING BUSINESS, COMMUNITY, & CONNECTION

The Chamber’s role is to champion these efforts, but it takes all of us to sustain them Choosing local whether it’s seafood, farm goods, dining, or community investment ensures that Mason County’s economy remains strong and our culture remains vibrant September is Eat Local Month Let’s celebrate it by honoring the people and businesses who make Mason County unique, and let’s carry that commitment forward all year long

Celebrating Eat Local Month is about more than economics It is about pride of place Visitors travel to Mason County not only for the scenery but also for the experience: oysters fresh from the water, produce sold by the hands that grew it, and meals prepared with creativity and care

These are the moments that leave a lasting impression and encourage return visits That’s why the Chamber also champions community initiatives like beautification. Flower baskets, seasonal décor, and attractive downtowns may not feed us, but they create the kind of welcoming environment where people want to linger and where they are more likely to spend money at a restaurant or shop Donations for beautification have been slower this year, but the impact remains clear: clean, vibrant streets amplify the appeal of local food and drink, making our towns more inviting for residents and visitors alike

This Eat Local Month, we encourage you to look for ways to join in If you run a restaurant, retailer, or nonprofit, source local products whenever possible Tell your customers and clients about the local ingredients, producers, or partners you rely on. Visit the farmers market, dine at a local restaurant, or share your favorite shellfish story on social media

YOUR GIFT CAN HELP

Make Shelton Beautiful

The flower baskets that grace our streets for the summer season have hung proudly throughout the summer season . This project, led by the Chamber, could not have been possible without the help, support, and organizational skills from members of the community. Our thanks go to Hood Canal Communications, City of Shelton, and Shelton Kiwanis Club & Foundation who were instrumental in the planning and hanging the flower baskets.

The Chamber and its partners collaborate to beautify our community in the summer with a flowery, cheerful welcome and in the winter by displaying the Christmas street light ornaments.

There is a tremendous cost associated with beautifying our community and the entire project is funded by community donations. No tax dollars are allocated towards these projects and all donations go directly to the beautification program.

You can help! We still need to raise $15,000.

Gifts made to the beautification program provide for the upkeep of the flower baskets and Christmas decorations. Summer flower baskets may be sponsored for $300 each which offsets the cost of purchasing, maintaining, and watering one flower basket for the season.

You may choose to sponsor a basket in the name of a business, an individual, or in memoriam of a loved one. You can even choose which basket you'd like to sponsor from a list of available locations.

Gifts of any amount are appreciated! You may drop-off monetary contributions at the Chamber Office located at 215 W Railroad Ave or mail them to SMCCF, PO Box 2389, Shelton, WA 98584.

If you would like more information on this valuable community project, please call (360) 4262021 or visit masonchamber.com/beautification.

MASON HEALTH INVESTS IN FUTURE WITH CAMPUS MASTER PLAN MASON HEALTH INVESTS IN FUTURE WITH CAMPUS MASTER PLAN

Mason Health is in the midst of a transformation that will shape how health care is delivered in Mason County for decades to come. Guided by its Campus Master Plan, the hospital district has launched a series of construction projects that expand services, enhance patient safety, and improve access to care.

Work began this spring and will continue in phases through 2026, with one of the most anticipated developments being the arrival of a high-field open MRI by the end of next year The new MRI will replace Mason Health’s current unit, which is nearing the end of its service life

Unlike traditional enclosed scanners, the highfield open MRI offers patients a more comfortable experience without compromising on image quality. The stronger magnet and advanced design will give physicians sharper, more precise diagnostic tools, while patients benefit from reduced anxiety and a more welcoming environment For Mason County, this investment means fewer residents will need to travel to Olympia or Tacoma for advanced imaging

“As Mason Health expands to meet the needs of our patients and community, teams across the District are committed to the continuation of their great work with the provision of exceptional care during this transition,” said Mason Health CEO Eric Moll

He emphasized that by the end of the construction period, patients and staff will benefit from enhanced services across the campus and access to state-of-the-art technology

Already, progress is visible On August 26, Mason Health hosted a ribbon cutting to celebrate the remodel at Mason Clinic–Eye Care, which created additional exam space an welcomed new providers The expansion, alo with plans to introduce diabetic retinopathy screening in Primary Care settings will mean more timely appointments and broader acces to preventative vision care close to home

Other campus projects are also underway Th cafeteria is undergoing a complete refresh,

reopening on November 3 as the Mountain View Café with a new layout and artwork by local artists Mason Health’s upper-level conference rooms are closed for construction and will reopen in a new downstairs location in February 2026 to support district and community programs The Human Resources department has temporarily relocated to 237 Professional Way until May 2026 Across the campus, upgrades such as new flooring and updated meeting spaces will further support patient safety, accessibility, and staff collaboration

Community voices are also being sought as Mason Health and Mason County Public Health conduct a community health needs assessment survey to better understand local health challenges Residents are encouraged to participate by visiting surveymonkey com/r/RXMWHZ9

Some recent news reports have raised concern about the future of rural hospitals, but Mason Health is clear: Mason General Hospital is not closing “Here’s the big headline: ‘We are not closing,’ under any situation,” said CEO Eric Moll in a recent interview

“By investing in our facilities now, we ’ re ensuring our patients continue to have access to the highest quality care, right here in Mason County.”

Though these projects bring temporary inconveniences such as department relocations and closures of common spaces, leadership is confident the results will be worth the wait “By investing in our facilities now, we ’ re ensuring our patients continue to have access to the highest quality care, right here in Mason County,” said Darrin Moody, Secretary of the Board of Commissioners for Public Hospital District No 1

Mason Health points to its strong financial position, proactive mitigation planning, and longstanding history of sound management as reasons it remains on solid footing With engaged staff, medical providers, and leadership, the District is focused on growth and expanding access to care, even as the health care sector faces challenges from federal funding changes

Mason Health’s Campus Master Plan reflects a clear vision: modern facilities, advanced technology, and expanded services that reflect the es of a united community and empowered ple Each step forward is a commitment to the ple of Mason County, ensuring that exceptional th care remains close to home

SWINGING IN THE RAIN SWINGING IN THE RAIN 15th Annual Chamber Golf Tournament 15th Annual Chamber

Golfers and local businesses came together for a fantastic day on the course at the 15th Annual Chamber Golf Tournament, held Friday, August 15, 2025 at Alderbrook Golf & Yacht Club Even with the steady rainfall, enthusiasm remained high and the competition was lively Players came prepared with rain gear and smiles, embracing the weather as part of the challenge and keeping spirits light throughout the day The Alderbrook course, with its sweeping views of Hood Canal and well-kept greens, once again provided the perfect backdrop for a tournament that has become a highlight of the Chamber’s calendar

The tournament was about more than long drives and putts; it was a celebration of the dedication our members show in supporting both the Chamber and the greater community Throughout the day, participants and sponsors alike enjoyed camaraderie, spirited play, and plenty of fun along the way Over the past fifteen years, this tournament has grown into a tradition that blends business networking with recreation, drawing teams back year after year to enjoy a day that is both competitive and collegial For many, it serves as a reminder that building community can happen in boardrooms and fairways alike

After several hours on the greens, players gathered inside the clubhouse to warm up with lunch and refreshments Teams recounted their best shots, compared scorecards, and shared a few laughs about the ones that got away We are thrilled to announce the winners:

First place went to Lund Custom Machine, playing for Heritage Bank, with team members Liels Lund, Arden Marriman, Gregyt Harvey, and Grant Dishon Eagle Eyes, represented by Nelly and Tony Schapp, Pam Shaffer, and Mark Mansfield, took second place Island Enterprises, Inc , with Heidi McCutcheon, Mark West, Daniel Kuntz, and Danny Snyder secured third place Each team combined skill with strategic use of tournament enhancements to rise to the top of the leaderboard

In addition to the best ball competition, several course contests added extra excitement throughout the day

Carter Barnes won Closest to Pin for all players Closest to the Line was claimed by John Oblizalo (men’s) and Jacqueline Early (ladies) Logan Shea of the Skookum Creek Tobacco team dominated the Ping Pong Drive on Hole #1, earning more than one hundred dollars as his prize These challenges sparked friendly rivalries and added to the day’s lively atmosphere, ensuring that everyone had a chance to shine

This event was made possible thanks to the generosity of our sponsors, whose support ensures that the Chamber can continue creating opportunities for members to connect and thrive Beyond the fun and competition, the tournament brought people together for a day of connection, friendly rivalry, and good humor even with a little rain in the mix

We are deeply appreciative of everyone who braved the weather, shared in the spirit of the day, and helped make the 15th Annual Chamber Golf Tournament a memorable success We look forward to many more tournaments to come

Raves!

Rave for WashingTone’s Junk Removal! Put in my request and they were here, and in and out within 45 minutes. Great job and thank you so much! - Debi U

I ORDERED A GHOST FACE THEMED BIRTHDAY CAKE FOR MY DAUGHTER AND IT TURNED OUT EXACTLY HOW I WANTED THE CAKE WAS ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS! I AM VERY HAPPY WITH HOW IT TURNED OUT THANK YOU! - AMBER F

So Clean and Green has great service with great people They were right on schedule when I needed a handyman for our rental!! Highly recommend going here – Deanna R

I recently had a mini split heat pump. From the 1st call to the complete install it was about weeks. My house was built in 1940 has always hard to keep warm/cold. This unit is amazing I wish I had done this years ago. Sabre was amazing to work with from day 1 and also today when the City called to get an inspection, that phone call left me completely lost. One quick call to Sabre and he eased all my concerns. He emailed me copies of everything and was making a call to the city. The install team was super friendly and knowledgeable as well. I highly recommend Bradley Air Company if you're ever in the market.

-Melissa E

Rave for Cut Rate! I'm newer to having a push start car I was on my way to work and my key fob battery died I had to leave my car running because it won't start without the fob. They had the right one in stock, and they also helped me replace it and got me on my way! – Estie S

We used Gennaro Contracting 2 different times in the last year The first time we used them to fix a water leak that was a lot worse than we thought The contractors had great communication showed up when they said they would were on budget and did an amazing job They were diligent in making sure the leak was fixed and answered all our questions We decided to use them to remodel our bathrooms and put a new countertop/sink in our kitchen We had another amazing experience Right on budget again Lots of communication and quality work – Kristi BW

My family and I get our passes (Discover & America the Beautiful) from Hoodsport Visitor Center every year Very friendly and have lots of information on Hoodsport and surrounding area – Megan H
