There’s something special about driving through downtown Shelton on a summer morning and spotting the vibrant flower baskets that brighten key corridors These bursts of color are more than seasonal décor They are a symbol of community pride and a warm welcome to all who live, work, and visit here
Since 1999, the Shelton-Mason County Chamber has helped bring these blooms to life through its annual beautification program Each summer, the flower baskets return as a cheerful reminder of what makes our community shine Paired with our Vintage Christmas Décor, this program has become one of the Chamber’s most beloved and visible traditions.
The success of Shelton’s beautification efforts is deeply rooted in collaboration From the businesses and individuals who sponsor baskets to the crews who install and maintain them, it takes a team to make Shelton bloom The Chamber is grateful to its community partners including the City of Shelton, Green Diamond Resource Company, Mason PUD 3, Hood Canal Communications, and Skookum Rotary for their continued commitment to these efforts
There is a significant cost associated with the materials, maintenance, and manpower needed to carry out this work
We need to raise nearly $20,000 to reach our fundraising goal The amount collected determines how many baskets we can hang and funds the lighting for Christmastown.
Businesses or individuals may sponsor a flower basket for $300 each Many choose to dedicate them in honor of a loved one, celebrate a milestone, or simply take part in the shared responsibility of keeping Shelton beautiful General contributions of any amount are also welcome and appreciated
Gifts of any amount are appreciated! You can make a gift online at masonchamber.com /beautification or by check payable to SMCCF, PO Box 2389, Shelton, WA 98584
As we look ahead to another season of color brightening our streets, the Chamber invites you to be part of this cherished effort Whether you choose to donate, sponsor a basket, or simply pause to enjoy the view, your support helps ensure Shelton continues to shine To learn more or make a gift, visit masonchamber com/beautification or call (360) 426-2021
Hoodstock: the Hood Canal Music & Arts Festival Has Incredible Impact on Youth Music Education in
Since its inception in 2018, the Hood Canal Music & Arts Festival (Hoodstock) has been more than just a weekend of melodies and masterpieces Nestled in the heart of Mason County, this festival has become a beacon of hope and inspiration for youth music education, transforming the local community and enriching the lives of young aspiring musicians
The festival, renowned for its vibrant showcase of talented musicians and local artisans, has consistently emphasized the importance of supporting music education in our schools It serves as a reminder that music is not just an art form but a vital component of a well-rounded education The festival's commitment to this cause has sparked a movement, encouraging local schools and communities to invest in the musical futures of their students.
One of the festival's most significant achievements was announced recently: Chris Eakes, a beloved local musician, will be joining the Hood Canal School as a guitar instructor This appointment marks a pivotal moment for the school and the community, as it underscores the festival's dedication to nurturing young talent and providing students with access to quality music education
Chris Eakes' involvement is a testament to the festival's impact A multi-instrumentalist from Buffalo, NY, Chris was a contestant in Season 4 of American Idol and has been a professional singer for most of his life. His musical journey has taken him from coast to coast, where he creates songs and soundscapes using his guitar and technology Chris's return to Washington in 2018 was marked by his performance at the first Hoodstock, where founders Kelli Kohout and Shannon Crabb Stanton committed to supporting talented musicians like Chris and embedding them in the community to serve as mentors to the youth
The goal of Hoodstock and Kelli and Shannon's dream was realized with the announcement of Chris in his new role The vision of integrating musicians into the community to inspire and educate young minds came to fruition, further solidifying the festival's impact on local music education
In 2022, Hoodstock gained another partner in Lance Gibbon, the Hood Canal School Superintendent A musician himself, Lance is a visionary who understands the importance of providing opportunities for youth to explore their creative side within the school environment His partnership with the festival has strengthened the community's commitment to fostering a love for
music among its young residents The festival's influence extends beyond the classroom By raising awareness about the importance of music education, it has galvanized support from local businesses, organizations, and individuals This collective effort has resulted in increased funding for music programs, the acquisition of new instruments, and the creation of scholarships for aspiring young musicians
Moreover, the festival has become a platform for young artists to perform and gain exposure, providing them with opportunities to collaborate with seasoned musicians In 2024 the Carlile Family Band, consisting of musicians ranging from age 7 to 16, opened up the festival on the water stage These young musicians have been raised around music their whole lives – fun fact: their father is Brandi Carlile's brother!
As the Hoodstock continues to grow, its impact on
youth music education in Mason County becomes increasingly impactful Serving as a shining example of how a community can come together to support and celebrate the arts, it will continue to ensure that music remains an integral part of our children's education
In a world where the arts often struggle for recognition and funding, Hoodstock stands as a testament to the power of music to unite, inspire, and transform Thanks to the generosity of our sponsors, families, and friends who have supported Hoodstock, its legacy will echo through the halls of Mason County schools for generations to come, harmonizing the future of our youth with the timeless beauty of music
Hoodstock will be held on August 15-16 in Union, Washington Mark your calendars for another unforgettable celebration of music, art, and community spirit

This August, Shelton residents will be asked to vote on the renewal of the city’s Transportation Benefit District (TBD). First approved by voters in 2015, the TBD has funded a wide range of street maintenance and safety improvements over the past decade. Renewal would not raise taxes—it would simply continue the existing 0.2% sales tax for another ten years.
If the measure does not pass, the City stands to lose a reliable and flexible funding source at a time when transportation costs are rising and outside grant dollars are increasingly competitive. For our growing community, that kind of uncertainty has real implications
Since 2016, the TBD has generated more than $5 million in dedicated revenue for transportation projects within city limits. That funding has supported over seven miles of paving and three miles of chip seal work, including visible improvements on Railroad Avenue’s Western Gateway, the Front Street overlay, and key corridors like Brockdale Road and Beaver Street.
The TBD has also contributed to Safe Routes to School infrastructure and enabled the City to deliver services such as pothole repair, snow and ice removal, and regular street sweeping.
The TBD allows the City to proactively plan and carry out road work, rather than wait for costly failures. As state and federal funding for local infrastructure has declined, this kind of predictable, local revenue has become increasingly important. Because the TBD is funded through sales tax rather than property tax, the cost is shared by both residents and visitors. That means local businesses and homeowners benefit from better infrastructure without bearing the full financial load. Plus, basic necessities like groceries and prescription medications are exempt, making this less of a burden for those on limited budgets.
The Chamber supports policies and investments that maintain and enhance the transportation systems necessary for the efficient movement of people and goods. A strong local economy depends on sound infrastructure. When roads are safe, reliable, and well-maintained, they support commerce, access to services, and overall quality of life. Whether it’s helping customers reach our downtown shops, supporting freight movement, or connecting workers to job sites, good roads strengthen business and community alike.
The Transportation Benefit District is a proven tool that works. It funds practical, high-impact improvements with accountability and transparency, and it shares the responsibility across everyone who benefits from Shelton’s streets. The Chamber believes that public infrastructure is a foundation for a thriving economy and that continued investment is both prudent and necessary.

Local businesses partner with PUD 3 for $7.3 million in conservation programs
Local businesses partner with PUD 3 for $7.3 million in conservation programs
an ongoing program with Bonneville Power Administration (BPA), PUD 3 has been distributing more than $7 3 million in energy efficiency projects across Mason County since Oct 2023 Much of that work was completed by local businesses and contractors, who worked with PUD 3 to make sure those dollars went as far as they could
In a typical two-year period, or biennium, PUD 3 receives funding from BPA based on the amount of energy that PUD 3 purchases - about $2.2 million in conservation funds for the 2023-2025 biennium The biggest change for this biennium came when BPA increased the amounts they would pay for low-income household projects That opened the possibility for projects to be fully funded and more households to be able to afford projects, such as new heat pumps or washers and dryers
“That was a game-changer,” PUD 3 Conservation Supervisor Salem Schankel said “We used to struggle to get all the BPA dollars out before, but now we easily spent that and were searching for more ”
That task would have been much harder without the support of local businesses, and their dedication to serving their customers Contractors
more affordable than ever Customers can receive rebates on qualifying washers, dryers, and heat pump water heaters that meet program criteria
PUD staff are available to help residents understand eligibility, navigate paperwork, and confirm that their chosen models will qualify before purchase Many local retailers carry qualifying appliances, making it easy for residents to shop close to home while keeping rebate dollars circulating in the community
One local customer, Lindsey Johnson spoke highly of her experience, saying, “Thanks to the PUD program, I was able to replace my old, unreliable washer and dryer without having to wait for reimbursement!
Locally owned, Bradley Air Company alone has completed nearly 400 heat pump systems as part of this PUD 3 and BPA program, by far the busiest contractor on the program this biennium Not only are these systems energy efficient, but they also provide financial savings to families Bradley Air staff said that many families are experiencing air conditioning for the first time in their homes, and Bradley Air is thrilled to be a part of this program
And the customers have been pretty thrilled about the opportunity as well Here are a few testimonials that Bradley Air shared from their customers: “My house was built in 1940 has always been hard to keep warm/cold This unit is amazing I wish I had done this years ago ” ; “When the heating /air conditioning upgrade through PUD started they dropped in with flyers for us and our customers Thank God they did too because I knew of a lady close by whose heat was giving her problems so I passed on the info to her They took such good care of her she told me! Shortly thereafter I also was approved for the upgrade at my home ” ; and “Thank you soo much for installing our new system Mom and I feel so blessed!”
Although energy efficiency projects mean a reduced energy bill, they often mean much more than that A better heating and cooling system can mean improved health, safety, and overall comfort for a household Even smaller things like better appliances can improve the quality of life for people in Mason County, especially those who are struggling
As the programs became more successful over the biennium, PUD 3 staff had to start searching for other dollars In 2024, they were awarded a grant through the state Department of Commerce, funded by Climate Commitment Act dollars, called the Home Electrification and Appliance Rebates program for $1 3 million This program increased incentives for moderate-income customers, so that more people could join the program for much less out-of-pocket
Conservation staff proactively sought additional resources and were able to secure more than $3 6 million in funds from other utilities who were not fully able to spend their BPA dollars
of what
s a
3 and area businesses were able to accomplish with that cash:
2,300 projects (with more to come)
1,300+ households benefitted
331 air source heat pumps
547 ductless heat pumps
521 laundry dryers
497 laundry washers
128 heat pump water heaters
And many other projects
When the next biennium rolls around starting October 2025, there could be changes and there likely won’t be as much funding available However, PUD 3 staff and local businesses will continue to use whatever resources they have to maximize benefits for Mason County households
To learn more or explore rebate-eligible projects, visit pud3 org/rebates As always, contact your PUD before beginning your project to make sure you have the right materials and models to get the maximum rebate possible

Rave for Central Mason Fire guys for swift response to capsized kayaker in Pickering Passage Appreciate all of you!
- Kathy P If you haven’t tried the Marmo Cafe on Cota street you are missing out! Great breakfast, coffee, and atmosphere!!!
- Mary T
Rave for Zeppelin Shipping & Technology Center. My husbands computer stopped working (we think it happened in an update). He called around to several computer places and found this one after being told by another that it wasn’t repairable. Not only were they quick to diagnose and repair but they were adorable and friendly too. Will definitely use them again if we ever have any more computer issues.
- Cait B
Huge Rave for our local Les Schwab! Had to get a flat tire fixed. They were so friendly and super fast And they didn’t even charge me anything Thanks guys!
