When it comes to planning a family holiday that truly offers something for everyone, few places in the UK compare to the sheer variety and natural charm of Devon. EVERYONE IN BETWEEN ADVENTURES – AND FOR AGES – FROM TODDLERS TO TEEN A FAMILY PARADISE FOR ALL
Tucked away in the South West, this county is blessed with golden beaches, wild moorland, quaint villages, and an abundance of family-friendly attractions that make it the perfect destination for families with children of all ages—from curious toddlers to thrill-seeking teens (and everything in between!).
Devon’s gentle pace and abundant green space make it an ideal playground for the littlest adventurers. Try Pennywell Farm near Buckfastleigh, where little ones can cuddle miniature pigs, ride tractors, and bottle-feed lambs. In North Devon, The Big Sheep offers toddler-friendly rides, live animal shows, and soft play, while World of Country Life in Exmouth combines farmyard fun with pirate ships and vintage vehicles.
Children aged 5–11 will be wideeyed with wonder at places like Crealy Theme Park & Resort just outside Exeter or Woodlands near Dartmouth which boasts over 60 rides and attractions, including indoor play zones, adventure playgrounds, and family coasters. History buffs will love Bygones Victorian Museum in
Torquay, where cobbled streets and costumed mannequins bring the past vividly to life. A visit to The Big Sheep in North Devon is also a must for younger children. A trip to Dartmoor National Park offers pony spotting and easy family trails through atmospheric tors and woodland.
“Devon’s gentle pace and abundant green space make it an ideal playground for the littlest adventurers.”
Teenagers needn’t worry about being bored in Devon. The surfing meccas of Croyde Bay, Woolacombe, and Bantham Beach offer top-notch lessons and gear rental for all levels. Adventurous teens can try coasteering or kayaking around the rugged North Devon coastline or take on treetop challenges at Go Ape in Haldon Forest. For something completely unique, head to The Milky Way Adventure Park, which mixes rollercoasters with archery, laser tag, and bird of prey displays.
“South West Coast Path provides a scenic backdrop for walks that the whole family can enjoy, with plenty of picnic stops and ice cream parlours along the way.”

Devon’s twin coastlines—North and South—offer miles of sandy beaches, rock pools, and dramatic cliffs. The South West Coast Path provides a scenic backdrop for walks that the whole family can enjoy, with plenty of picnic stops and ice cream parlours along the way.
Lundy Island, a short ferry ride from Bideford or Ilfracombe, is a magical day trip destination where puffins and seals steal the show, and even the boat ride feels like an adventure.
For quieter days, Castle Drogo and Killerton House, both National Trust properties, offer gentle strolls, treasure hunts, and wide-open lawns for kids to burn off energy while adults soak in the history.

For a special treat, Riverford Field Kitchen near Totnes offers organic, family-style meals with a welcoming, relaxed vibe.
What makes Devon particularly unique is its ability to entertain across generations. With so many self-catering cottages, coastal lodges, and family-focused holiday parks, accommodation options are as flexible as the itinerary you craft. Whether you’re pitching a tent under the stars, checking into a luxury barn conversion, or booking a campsite by the beach, Devon caters to all budgets and lifestyles.
Devon’s food scene is as hearty as its countryside. Family pubs such as The Thatched Inn near Bideford or The Cary Arms in Babbacombe welcome kids with open arms and menus to match. For something fun and casual, Rockfish (locations in Dartmouth, Exmouth, and Torquay) delivers freshly caught seafood in a lively, family-friendly setting. For more rural dining, there are a plethora of excellent pubs with beer gardens and play equipment to keep everyone amused, many of which are also dog friendly.
No Devon holiday is complete without a traditional cream tea— don’t forget, in Devon the cream goes on first! Try Tea on the Green in Westward Ho! or Angels Tea Rooms in Torquay for the ultimate

“South West Coast Path provides a scenic backdrop for walks that the whole family can enjoy.”
The M5 is the main motorway link into the county and runs right down to Exeter then filters onto the A38 and A 380 just south of Exeter with the A30 leading onto Dartmoor. FAMILY FUN ON THE
Sunshine, sea air, and endless opportunities for adventure – welcome to the English Riviera.
Nestled on Devon’s south coast, this 22-mile stretch of stunning coastline is home to three unique seaside towns – Torquay, Paignton, and Brixham – each offering something special for families in search of fun, relaxation, and unforgettable experiences. Whether you’re planning a summer break or a cosy winter escape, this is a destination for all seasons.
Whatever your budget or travel style, the English Riviera has accommodation to match. Choose from seafront hotels with panoramic views, charming B&Bs full of local character, or self-catering cottages for extra space and flexibility. Holiday parks come with pools, play areas, and on-site entertainment to keep younger guests happy.
Well-known names like Mercure and Hampton by Hilton sit alongside elegant Victorian hotels and boutique stays. In Paignton, families can enjoy a classic seaside experience in friendly hotels or caravan parks within walking distance of the beach. Over in Brixham, quirky cottages and harbour-view apartments offer a perfect base to soak up the town’s charm and seafood scene.
“Take the Babbacombe Cliff Railway down to Oddicombe Beach for swimming, kayaking, or picnicking.”
Torquay blends seaside tradition with a touch of sophistication. Begin your day at Torre Abbey, where children can roam the gardens while adults explore over 800 years of history. Don’t miss Kents Cavern – a thrilling (and educational) trip into prehistoric caves. Get out on the water with a RIB ride or a peaceful wildlife-spotting seafari. Take the Babbacombe Cliff Railway down to Oddicombe Beach
for swimming, kayaking, or picnicking.
Then, head to the Babbacombe Model Village, a magical world of miniature scenes, cheeky surprises, and family trails.

For beach lovers and classic family fun, Paignton delivers. Its long, sandy beach and colourful pier make it perfect for bucketand-spade days, fish and chips, and ice cream on the promenade.
Top of the list for animal lovers

The English Riviera enjoys a mild climate but should the weather take a turn, there’s still plenty to do. Torquay Museum houses engaging exhibitions, including an Agatha Christie gallery. Bygones in Babbacombe brings Victorian life to vivid life, complete with a cobbled street and model railway.
As night falls, the Riviera comes alive with entertainment. With six theatres across the Bay – including the Princess Theatre in Torquay and the Palace Theatre in Paignton – there’s always something to see, from musicals to magic. Many hotels and holiday parks also offer evening entertainment, so parents can relax with a drink while the kids join in a disco or quiz night.

The Northern Isles offer stunning views, unique heritage, breath-taking coastlines, fantastic wildlife, delicious local produce, and so much more! Your Orkney and Shetland holiday begins as you set sail with NorthLink Ferries.
The comfortable and reliable service offers sailings from Aberdeen to Lerwick, Shetland, with regular calls into Orkney’s capital of Kirkwall. Alternatively travel to Orkney’s port of Stromness from Caithness. This 90 minute journey on MV Hamnavoe is the only sailing to Orkney which passes the iconic sea stack, the Old Man of Hoy.
Portsmouth - the UK’s only island city - is the place to visit with the family this summer, offering a host of top events alongside world-class attractions that are open all year round.
Sailing fans will have much to enjoy, with not one, or even two, but three huge events headed to the city this summer. First up is the Emirates Great Britain Sail Grand Prix (19-20 July), which sees a flying fleet of F50s battle for supremacy in the Solent. The event will involve British Olympic champions competing for the home team across short, intense races on high-tech, highspeed catamarans.
Next comes The Ocean Race Europe (14-17 August), with equally fast and furious racing, but with an environmental edge as all boats carry specialised equipment to monitor water quality. Much of the activity around the big races will cover ocean health and sustainability.
“Sailing fans will have much to enjoy, with not one, or even two, but three huge events headed to the city this summer.”
Last but not least, the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race returns to Gunwharf Quays for its grand departure on 31 August. The teams - comprising expert sailors alongside novices from all walks of life - will set off from the waterfront outlet centre, which will also offer a host of installations to mark the occasion.
As well as all this, Victorious Festival returns to Southsea Common over the August bank holiday weekend. Following on from its hugely successful 2024 event, for which it won ‘Major Festival of the Year’ at the Live Awards, Victorious is back to offer top-notch live music right along the coast. This year’s headliners - Kings of Leon, Vampire Weekend and Queens of the Stone Age - will be joined on the line up by Nelly Furtado, Bloc Party, Craig David, Michael Kiwanuka, Madness, Gabrielle, Rizzle Kicks and

loads more besides. There will also be comedy from Chris McCausland, Joel Dommett and Ruby Wax.
Don’t forget, the festival also has a packed Kids Arena for families to enjoy activities all day long, with everything from live music to fairground rides and workshops from a host of Portsmouth attractions. Tickets are available now, with fantastic value options for those aged 12 and under.
As for attractions, don’t forget that Portsmouth Historic Dockyard’s Ultimate Explorer ticket gets you entry for a whole year, so you can come back time and again all through summer - and beyond! What with the Mary Rose, HMS Victory, HMS Warrior, National Museum of the Royal Navy, HMS M33, Submarine Museum (and more!) to explore, an Ultimate Explorer is the sensible way to go as there’s far too much to squeeze into just one day. If that wasn’t reason enough, how about seeing 500 years of Naval history up close? Stand at the spot where Nelson fell on HMS Victory, walk down the imposing HMS Warrior - once the fastest, toughest ship at sea - and go through the air lock to be in the same room as Henry VIII’s Mary Rose.
“Portsmouth offers a host of top events alongside world-class attractions that are open all year round.”
“Taller than the London Eye, the iconic Spinnaker Tower offers stunning views across the city.”
The ongoing conservation project Victory Live: The Big Repair also offers STEM learnings that are perfect for Key Stages 2 and 3.
If you need some back-to-school essentials, or want to browse the bigbrand bargains, then the waterfront outlet centre Gunwharf Quays should be your next port of call. Here you’ll find more than 90 designer outlet stores offering up to 60% off RRP - among them Clarks, Hatley, M&S and Skechers. There are also treats to enjoy from Haribo, Cadbury’s and Lindt, not to mention the 30+ bars and restaurants offering a caffeinated pickme-up or the chance to sample cuisine from right across the globe.
“Stand at the spot where Nelson fell on HMS Victory, walk down the imposing HMS Warrior.”
Entertainment is also covered, with Gunwharf Quays home to a multiplex cinema, bowling alley, Mini Port, play area and contemporary art gallery that’s free to enter.
Also within the Gunwharf Quays complex is the iconic Spinnaker Tower. Taller than the London Eye and offering stunning views across city, coast and country, the tower is a must-visit for young and old alike.
Information panels offer a description of the views that stretch out for 23 miles, with the dockyard, South Downs, Isle of Wight and Portsmouth cityscape all laid out before your eyes. Those who are brave enough can walk across the
glass floor, or even go all-out and abseil down the side of the tower for views that truly are unlike any other!
Something else you can spot from the Spinnaker Tower view decks is The D-Day Story, the museum that’s dedicated to the Normandy Landings of June 1944. Using personal testimonies from those who took part alongside artefacts from the time, the museum answers the question: How do you get an army across the English Channel and into France when your enemy is well armed, well trained, and expecting you?
A literal stone’s throw from The D-Day Story you’ll find Henry VIII’s Southsea Castle - once a fortification to protect England from French invasion, but now a free-to-visit tourist attraction offering a small museum, restaurant and stunning coastal views from the ramparts.
Pair a visit to Southsea Castle with a picnic on the nearby Common for a low-cost day out for the family.

As parents we always want what’s best for our children. We want to do everything in our power to watch them learn, play, grow and thrive
It’s wonderful to see them change and improve with every life experience.
With Puddle Ducks that difference is obvious. It’s the baby who’s found new confidence in the water
The nervous toddler who now fearlessly jumps in.
The shy child who’s made a new group of friends.
We’re a swimming school with a difference and we pass that onto you. When you choose to swim with us, you can see the Puddle Ducks difference in your child.
Find the perfect class for you…
Classes can vary, so take time to find a class that will give you the experiences that you want – whether this is just water familiarity or a more progressive approach; and whether the style of the class is relaxed and fun, or more formal and regimented.
Specialist baby and pre-school swimming classes follow a clear and progressive structure and will usually involve child-led submersions and surface swims for your little one.
However, the emphasis should be on parents/carers and their babies having fun, with no child being forced to do anything against their wishes.
The best swimming classes are full of carefully designed but simple activities, gentle submersions and are packed full of songs and rhymes.
How early can I take my baby swimming?
It’s never too early or late! Swimming classes offers your child a unique sensory experience and development of water confidence and lifesaving skills that last a lifetime.
There’s a whole host of benefits to taking your little bundle of joy to swimming classes:
Plenty of eye contact & skin contact – it’s a wonderful way to bond Classes have lots of gentle activities helping you and your little one feel relaxed and confident in the water
Makes swimming a fun and socially stimulating activity (for both you and your baby!)
Even parents who can’t swim can enjoy relaxing in the water with their baby
It is the only time your baby can be completely independent (when experiencing gentle submersions)
Your baby moves freely and develops actions they wouldn’t otherwise be able to in their first year of life helping to develop crucial higher brain functions, core muscle development and co-ordination far earlier than they would otherwise be able to
Even though gentle, baby swimming classes provide a complete physical work-out: strengthening your baby’s heart, lungs and respiratory system, which again aids development of the brain
Regular swimming often improves eating and sleeping patterns
Learning to respond to key words (within a few months) can make your baby sharper mentally, increasing levels of awareness and understanding as well as improving communication between you
Encouraging a baby to take regular exercise from such a young age is also an extremely healthy routine to instil which may prevent childhood lethargy.
Swimming as a baby should instil a love of water & swimming for the rest of your child’s life.
Water is just the best playground in the world, so enjoy it!
Children learn through play and just one positive and playful experience can brighten your child’s day. Having fun in the water is so important as it will improve your child’s swimming skills and confidence, without them even realising it, and will make their relationship with the water a positive one.
Play with one of our Puddle Ducks rubber ducks or a ball or lots of different size balls
Explore items that float and sink and talk about why Use water toys such as buckets, cups & watering cans
Have fun getting your faces wet!
Have races and splashing competitions!
If you have any questions about taking your child swimming, our teams are based all over the UK, you can find your nearest class at puddleducks.com

Somerset is a county full of timeless charm, rich history, and unforgettable family adventures. From scenic countryside escapes and lively festivals to interactive museums and iconic landmarks, there’s something for every age and interest.
For train-loving tots (and nostalgic parents), the West Somerset Railway offers a scenic steam train journey through 22 miles of countryside. Running from Bishops Lydeard to Minehead, it’s the longest heritage railway in England. Stop off at historic villages, picnic on the beach at Blue Anchor, or enjoy cream tea in a vintage carriage. Special events and themed journeys throughout the year make it even more magical.
Just down the road from Minehead is the pretty historic village of Dunster, overlooked by a stunning castle. This National Trust site features opulent

interiors and stunning gardens. The wooded trails, working watermill, and hands-on activities throughout the grounds make it fun for all ages.
Check their calendar for family-themed days and school holiday events—there’s often storytelling, archery, and dressing up!
Dunster has its own beach, an interesting contrast to the sand and picturesque harbour at Minehead. Here you can give your family dog plenty of exercise all year. The Somerset coast is long and varied, including harbours, cliffs, resorts and an incredibly long beach at Brean. This is another perfect year-round destination for dog owners. Overlooking the huge expanse of
beach is Brean Down, a 318 feet high promontory which only takes a few minutes to climb up the steps, the reward being stunning views. At the end of the Down is an old fort dating from Napoleonic times, facing west to the Bristol Channel.
In the village of Brean is an exciting theme park. Unusually, entry is free. You buy wristbands that give access to the thrilling rides so it means that if the adults in your group just want to watch you and experience the fun then they don’t end up having to pay.
“The South West Heritage Trust operates a number of fascinating museums and sites in Somerset.”
Further up the coast is Weston-superMare, where you can find one of Somerset’s three piers (the others at Clevedon and Burnham-on-Sea). The Grand Pier is packed full of exciting rides, attractions and events.
The county town of Somerset is Taunton, easily accessible by rail and road, being next to the M5 motorway. The town is bathed in history, which can be experienced at the Museum of Somerset situated in Taunton Castle. This is free to enter and cleverly mixes local history with hands-on exhibits for children. Whether your child is into Roman soldiers, fossils, or medieval life, the museum makes learning genuinely fun.

A new interactive exhibit focusing on environmental change and sustainability is ideal for curious young minds.
The South West Heritage Trust operates a number of fascinating museums and sites in Somerset. The Rural Life Museum at Glastonbury offers insights into the county’s agricultural heritage. Interactive exhibits and handson activities, such as butter churning and traditional crafts, engage children and adults alike, making history come alive.
The Somerset Brick and Tile Museum in Bridgwater offers a fascinating glimpse into the region’s industrial heritage. Located on East Quay, the museum is housed in a former brickmaking factory and features one of the last surviving traditional brick kilns in southern England, a Scheduled Ancient Monument that was last fired in 1965. Visitors can explore exhibits
showcasing the tools, methods, and processes involved in brick and tile production, including a variety of bricks, tiles, and terracotta plaques that contributed to the architectural character of many Somerset towns. The museum also hosts interactive workshops and demonstrations, providing an engaging experience for families and history enthusiasts alike.
Avalon Archaeology, situated within Somerset’s Avalon Marshes, is an immersive open-air heritage site that brings the region’s rich past to life through meticulously reconstructed ancient buildings.
Crafted by dedicated volunteers, the site features full-scale replicas including a Saxon longhall inspired by a 9th-century royal palace excavated in Cheddar, a Roman villa dining room adorned with a 140,000-piece mosaic completed in 2024 using traditional techniques, an Iron Age roundhouse, and a Viking trading ship named ‘Walrus’. These reconstructions are furnished with authentic, handcrafted items, offering visitors a tangible connection to Somerset’s historical eras. Further east, the county has no end of things to see and experience. Wells is England’s smallest city, however it’s a magical place to visit and experience the history around the Cathedral and adjacent Bishop’s Palace. Visitors can purchase a joint ticket to both sites. The cathedral is famous for its scissor arches and also the ancient astronomical clock.
“Dunster has its own beach, an interesting contrast to the sand and picturesque harbour at Minehead.”
The Bishop’s Palace is perfect for families who look to explore history in a fun way with activities and special events, both within the palace and the beautiful gardens which are surrounded by a moat and connecting drawbridge. The swans found on the moat are famous, not least for ringing a little bell on a chain when they want feeding!
Bath is another city in Somerset, famous for its Georgian and Roman periods. The Roman Baths are a must-see, giving an extraordinary

glimpse into history going back 2,000 years. Like the other historical sites in Somerset that we have mentioned, The Roman Baths breathe so much fun into history and create a brilliant learning environment.
Everywhere you turn in Bath gives a new glimpse into past life –the Georgian splendour of the Royal Crescent and Circus are just two examples of amazing architecture. The Jane Austen Centre offers an engaging experience into the life and times of one of England’s most cherished authors. Located at 40 Gay Street, the Centre is housed in a Grade II listed Georgian building, close to where Austen lived during her stay in the city from 1801 to 1806.
The exhibition delves into how Bath influenced Austen’s writing, particularly in novels like Northanger Abbey and Persuasion. Visitors are greeted by costumed guides and can explore interactive exhibits, including a life-size wax figure of Austen created using forensic artistry. The Centre also features a Regency Tea Room, offering periodstyle refreshments, and hosts the annual Jane Austen Festival each September, celebrating the author’s legacy with a variety of events and activities throughout the city.
As well as the M4 and M5 motorway network, GWR trains give easy access to Somerset coast, see gwr.com .
