BEST FOOT FORWARD TOEZONE

LIFE, LOVE AND LESSONS FROM THE DANCEFLOOR

Georgina Probert sits down with dancer, choreographer, TV presenter and author, Oti Mabuse to talk about dance, motherhood and finding your passions.

When you think of Oti Mabuse, a few words spring to mind: dazzling, determined and downto-earth. Best known as a two-time champion on Strictly Come Dancing, Oti’s journey has been anything but ordinary. Born and raised in South Africa, she discovered her passion for dance at an early age, training with discipline and ambition that would eventually propel her onto some of the biggest stages in the world.

Oti has never been one to stand still. After capturing the nation’s heart on Strictly, she expanded her career into television presenting, choreography and writing. Whether offering insight as a judge on Dancing on Ice, hosting her own shows or putting pen to paper, Oti brings the same energy and authenticity that made her such a favourite in the ballroom.

Beyond the sequins and spotlights lies another side to Oti: a devoted wife to husband Marius Lepure, a proud South African, and more recently, a loving mother. Since welcoming her daughter, Oti has spoken openly about the joys and challenges of parenthood, balancing her career with family life, and passing down the traditions and values that shaped her own upbringing.

For Oti, family is at the heart of everything, whether she’s reflecting on the sacrifices her parents made, sharing her daughter’s early adventures or emphasising the importance of representation and opportunity for future generations.

“It’s about what makes your child happy, not what puts them under pressure”

In this interview, Oti opens up about her career, her South African roots, the realities of motherhood and the joys that keep her grounded.

Career highlights

Oti has lived a career most performers only dream of. From her earliest days in South Africa’s competitive dance world to the glittering ballrooms of Strictly Come Dancing, she has faced every challenge with unshakeable ambition. Yet when asked what has surprised her most about the journey so far, Oti pauses before revealing that the biggest twist hasn’t been on stage at all.

“I wouldn’t say much has been a surprise,” she reflects. “Dancing, presenting, even writing – I’ve always known I wanted to do them. But what really caught me off guard was discovering just how much I love DJing. I haven’t gone fully into it yet, but it excites me. The dancing and the writing somehow led me there, and I never expected that.”

Having published a series of popular children’s picture books, Dance with Oti, more recently her debut novel Slow Burn has hit the shelves. This book is more definitely for adults and brings together a look behind the scenes in the world of dancing, family tensions and a lot of passion and romance.

“My upbringing was everything,” she says warmly. “We were dancing all the time, but it wasn’t just about fun, it was about having goals, working hard and knowing what you wanted from life. My parents instilled that discipline in us.”

Oti recalls how her parents, like so many South Africans of their generation, fought tirelessly for education and equal rights.

“There’s a spicy side of dancing that people always imagine is happening behind the scenes”

“There’s a spicy side of dancing that people always imagine is happening behind the scenes. And even though this is not a true story, it’s nice to use your imagination as a writer and have people read that and let them tell their own stories through their own voices,” she adds.

Recognising her roots

Behind the glitz lies a grounding that shaped the woman Oti has become. She speaks with deep pride about her upbringing in South Africa and how it continues to influence her as a performer and as a mother.

“As a mum who works, I’ve had to adjust my expectations. The guilt is real”

“They reminded us constantly that they’d fought for our opportunities – our freedom, our chance to study, to achieve. So we had to honour that by working hard and chasing our passions. That’s why both me and my sister Motsi are so driven. It’s in us, because of them.”

Now, as a mother herself, Oti wants her daughter to grow up with the same sense of pride in her heritage. “I want her to know she’s South African,” she says firmly. “To understand the culture, the music, the food, the colour. And of course, her dad’s side too. Both are rich with tradition. That identity is so important – I want my daughter to feel connected to where she comes from.”

Passing on the passion

With such a rich dance heritage in her family, it is little wonder people are curious whether Oti’s daughter, who is nearly two years old, might follow in her footsteps. Has she noticed early signs of a budding performer?

“Absolutely!” Oti laughs. “She’s been to the dance studio with us, to competitions, even on tour. It’s all around her. But honestly, I want her to find her own thing. For me, dance was something we fought for – it was our path, our survival. She doesn’t need that same fight. She can choose something else: swimming, horse riding, journalism, whatever sparks her passion.”

For parents with children showing an interest in dance, Oti is refreshingly practical. “It’s really about understanding why they’re doing it,” she advises. “Is it for fun, for social skills, for community or for competition? Then choose a school that supports that.

“If it’s for competition, then be prepared for the discipline, the exams, the early mornings, the hair and makeup. Both are valid, but it’s about what makes your child happy, not what puts them under pressure.”

It’s advice rooted in experience, delivered with both realism and compassion.

The shifts of motherhood

Motherhood, Oti admits, has changed everything. She recalls how in the early months, she and her husband carefully balanced childcare with their careers, ensuring that one parent was always at home. But as their daughter has grown, the dynamic has shifted.

“Now she’s nearly two, and she knows exactly who’s there and who isn’t,” Oti says. “She’s so aware and if one of us is missing, she feels it. That’s been tough. As a mum who works, I’ve had to adjust my expectations. The guilt is real. But I keep reminding myself that when I go to work, I do it for her. She’s my motivation.”

Oti is grateful for her role on the TV show Loose Women, which allows her to work hours that still fit around nursery pick-ups. “I get to have breakfast with her, drop her off, go to work, then be there to collect her. That’s a blessing. If I were still dancing full-time, it would be so much harder.”

Her honesty about the challenges of separation anxiety and guilt will resonate with parents everywhere. “If I leave her, I have to know she’s happy in that moment, playing and laughing, otherwise it’s really difficult. It’s hard to walk out the door if she’s crying for me.”

Holding on to traditions

“I love being with my daughter, hearing her little jokes. She’s hilarious – my own comedian at home”

One tradition Oti is determined to pass down is her family’s way of celebrating Christmas. In South Africa, she explains, it was a vibrant, sun-soaked affair. “On the 23rd December, everyone would split up and buy presents,” she recalls with a smile. “On the 24th, we’d celebrate with a big party and all the family together. And then on the 25th, we’d do presents in the morning, go out for lunch, and head to the beach or the pool. No cold weather, no rain, just sunshine and flip flops!”

It’s a reminder that even amid her busy life in Britain, Oti carries her childhood traditions with her, eager to share them with her daughter.

Balance and self-care

For someone known for her high energy, how does Oti recharge? Her answer may surprise those who picture her constantly on the move.

“My me-time is the gym,” she admits with a laugh. “Honestly! I put on an audiobook, zone

“I want my daughter to feel connected to where she comes from”

out and just work out. I feel refreshed and energetic. Sometimes I take a class and there’ll be 60-year-olds next to me who are stronger than I am – I love it. It pushes me.”

And when she’s not dazzling audiences or juggling motherhood and work? Oti is happiest in her own version of a “feel-good day.” It might be as simple as family time, music, good food and laughter. “I love being with my daughter, hearing her little jokes. She’s hilarious – my own comedian at home.”

From the ballroom to the bookshelf, the gym to the nursery run, Oti is proof that passion, resilience and a grounded sense of family can take you far. She may be dreaming of DJ decks and writing new stories, but at her core, she’s simply a woman who loves her family,

honours her roots and embraces every twist life throws her way.

Her story is one of inspiration; not because it’s perfect, but because it’s honest. And in Oti’s honesty, readers can see themselves: parents juggling, children dreaming, families celebrating and people striving to find joy in the everyday.

“I ABSOLUTELY LOVE BEING A MUM. YOU NEVER FEEL A LOVE LIKE IT”

With her eldest son starting school and twin toddlers keeping her on her toes, television personality

Dani Dyer is navigating the highs and lows of life as a mumof-three. She talks to Georgina Probert about finding calm in the chaos, the lessons she’s learned and why sometimes the best parenting advice is simply to trust yourself.

When television personality

Dani Dyer dropped her eldest son

Santiago

– known affectionately as Santi – at the school gates for the very first time, she joined thousands of parents across the country in an emotional rite of passage. For Dani, though, this milestone has been made a little easier by Santi’s enthusiasm.

“He was so excited to go, so it did make it a lot easier for me,” says Dani. “It’s such a big milestone, bless him. But he was so ready, and so excited. I was actually quite lucky with the transition, because I was a bit

worried about how he was going to settle in. But honestly, he’s been brilliant.”

That readiness, Dani believes, stems from his time at nursery, which prepared him for school hours and routine. “He’d been used to it, so I think that really helped. But still, when I saw how tiny he looked in his uniform, my heart just melted.”

Parenting highs and lows

Becoming a mother has been a defining role in Dani’s life. She welcomed Santi in 2021, and in 2023 gave birth to twin daughters,

While her children bring her endless joy, she’s candid about the challenges of parenting three under age four.

“The best moments are just watching them grow into their little personalities,” she says. “The twins are running around now and saying the cutest things, and Santi makes me laugh every single day. They really do make you giggle.”

But Dani doesn’t sugar-coat the difficulties, especially the early days with twins. “That first year was brutal. They were gorgeous, but it was very hard. Santi was only two, still a baby himself, and suddenly I had two newborns as well. It was a massive juggle. Just getting out of the house felt like a mission. I think it was the hardest period of my life.”

Her saving grace came in the form of her best friend, who also had twins at the same time. “We really got each other through it. If I was having a bad day, she was having a good one, and vice versa. We used to rotate our moods! That support made all the difference.”

Lessons learned

Finding calm in the chaos

It’s perhaps no surprise, then, that Dani has partnered with JOHNSON’S® Baby to support their Soothing Sounds campaign, which addresses the overload of advice new parents face. The brand has created an album of calming white noise tracks, designed to turn the barrage of often ‘unsolicited advice’ into something soothing.

For Dani, the campaign struck a deeply personal chord. “I’ve always loved white noise. I still sleep with it myself, and I’ve used it with the kids since they were tiny. They know the routine: bath, blinds down, sleep bags on, white

“The best moments are just watching them grow into their little personalities. They make me laugh every single day”

So what would Dani say to parents expecting twins? “Take it easy and don’t put pressure on yourself if you don’t get out the door every day. Some days you’ll feel like you’ve achieved nothing, but just being in that newborn bubble is enough. And get as much help as you can.”

Like so many modern mums, Dani has also felt the weight of overwhelming parenting advice. “With Santi, I was harder on myself. I used to go online a lot and compare myself with everyone else. But with the twins, I just thought, I’m going to wing it and do it my way. There are so many rules now, so much noise. My mum always says she’d hate to parent in this day and age because it feels so regimented. I think you just have to trust that you know what’s best for your child.”

That philosophy – to “wing it” become her guiding principle. “I take it day by day. Some days are highs, some are lows, but you just keep going. I absolutely love being a mum. You never feel a love like it. It’s the most incredible feeling in the world.”

noise on. It’s our signal that it’s time to relax. So when JOHNSON’S® Baby approached me, it just felt so right. I already believe in it and do it anyway. The sounds are so relaxing and so accessible now too. I’m such an advocate for it.”

years and think, oh no, what did I put her through? But now I just have so much more respect. She’s incredible.”

Dani also treasures the humour that her children bring into daily life. “Summer is so theatrical –she’ll walk into a room and say, ‘Hello, darling!’ like a little actress. They’ve all got such big personalities and they make me laugh every day.”

Looking ahead

As Dani looks to the future, she’s excited for both her family life and her career. With three happy, lively children and a passion for projects that resonate with parents, she’s carving out a life rooted in authenticity.

Her message to other parents is refreshingly simple: “Don’t put too much pressure on yourself. You don’t have to be perfect. Just take it day by day, trust yourself and enjoy it as much as you can.”

It is advice born not from books or experts, but from lived experience – the kind that resonates most with mums and dads navigating the same whirlwind of love, chaos and sleepless nights.

Because if Dani has learned one thing, it’s that sometimes the best approach to parenting really is to trust yourself.

Her passion for creating calm extends to her own wellbeing, too. “I love going to the gym. I know that sounds mad when I’ve got three little ones, but it’s always been my me-time. I started exercising when I was about 12, doing old workout DVDs, and I’ve loved it ever since. For me, it’s not just physical, it helps my mental health. It makes me feel like myself again.”

Family, inspiration and school run chaos

Despite juggling motherhood and a busy career, Dani admits her home life is as hectic as any other young family. “The school run is mayhem. Sometimes everything goes smoothly, and I’m like, wow, I’ve nailed this. Other days, I’m sweating before we’re even out the door. There’s always a last-minute nappy change or something unexpected. But that’s life with kids – unpredictable!”

“I’ve always loved white noise. I still sleep with it myself, and I’ve used it with the kids since they were tiny”

Through it all, she finds inspiration close to home. “My biggest inspiration is my mum. You really value your parents once you have children yourself. I look back at my teenage

QUICKFIRE Q&A

When asked about her ideal date night with husband Jarrod, Dani grins. “I’d love to watch a horror film and get a Chinese takeaway. But Jarrod hates horror films, so it usually ends up being The Greatest Showman instead!”

The funniest parenting moment?

“Honestly, it’s the little things the kids come out with. They’re so cheeky and full of character. Of course, we’ve also had our fair share of disasters – like nosebleeds in the car on the way to school. But even in the chaos, they make me smile.”

And what does she wish she’d been told before becoming a mum? She laughs: “To have more lie-ins! My sister is 18, and she says, ‘I’m just going to have a lie-in and watch telly all day.’ And I think – I wish I’d done more of that before kids. I’d have taken a whole year of it!”

Christmas drop-in clinic

Need some expert parenting advice? The Netmums Drop-In Clinic and Parent Supporter Service provides free 24/7 support from health visitors, midwives, psychologists, counsellors and more. Here, they answer some of the most common issues parents face at Christmas.

Feeling the festive overload? How to beat Christmas burnout as a parent

Let go of the ‘perfect Christmas’ myth – and protect your wellbeing this festive season

From school nativities to elf antics, Christmas can be magical… but also overwhelming. If you’re juggling the shopping, wrapping and dinner planning (on top of parenting), no wonder you’re feeling frazzled.

Netmums’ Parent Supporter, Loraine Thrower, shares simple ways to make this Christmas less stressful and more joyful. She says: “We all try to create the ‘perfect’ Christmas for our families, but it’s important to remember your mental health matters too. If you’re not enjoying it, your kids probably aren’t either.”

LORAINE’S TIPS

FESTIVE BURNOUT: FOR AVOIDING

Limit your time social media –Don’t compare your Christmas to others online. What you see online is often a filtered version of reality, not the whole picture.

Ask for help – If you’re doing most of the organising, ask others to take on a few jobs. Hosting lunch? Ask guests to bring a starter or pudding.

Set boundaries – Overspending can cause unnecessary stress in January. Start early, decide what you can afford for presents and food – and stick to it.

Learn to say no – Saying no doesn’t make you rude or a killjoy – it helps you stay in control. Don’t take on more than you can manage.

Build in some ‘me’ time – Take a breather during December. That could be a coffee catch-up, a sofa movie night or simply five minutes of calm. You deserve to enjoy Christmas, too.

How to sleep-proof your child this Christmas

Sleepovers, late nights and excitement can all disrupt sleep – here’s how to stay on

track

Christmas fun can turn bedtime into a battle. But with a few small adjustments, you can help your child wind down and rest, even when routines

are out the window. Netmums’ Health Visitor, Emma Moriarty, shares her expert advice.

Keep things familiar – Bring familiar items like your child’s comforter, bedding or favourite soft toy when travelling. Familiar sights and smells help them settle more easily.

Stick to routine where you can – Even if bedtime is slightly earlier or later, keeping the usual order of bathtime, story and bed helps signal it’s time to sleep.

Watch for overstimulation

– Christmas lights and noise can be overwhelming. Build in quiet moments throughout the day so your child has space to wind down.

Be flexible, but firm –Unexpected things will happen. Know which parts of the bedtime routine you can bend, and which help your child most. Trust your instincts and don’t feel pressured by others.

How to manage your child’s expectations at Christmas

Yes, they might dream of mountains of presents – but you can keep the magic without blowing your budget

“Overspending can cause unnecessary stress in January. Start early, decide what you can afford for presents and food – and stick to it”

From toy adverts to friends comparing gift lists, it’s easy for children to focus on what’s under the tree. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Netmums’ Counsellor, Emma Page, shares ways to shift the focus from stuff to special moments your family will treasure.

Focus on presence, not presents – Think back to your own childhood; it’s the memories that stick, not the presents. Start simple traditions like a hot chocolate party or festive film night that your kids will remember long after the toys are gone.

Be mindful of social media pressures – Children see influencers unwrapping extravagant gifts and may expect the same. Talk openly about budgeting and help older kids set savings goals for bigger items.

Explain that even Santa has limits – To manage gift expectations, remind your child that Father Christmas brings one special gift to each child, and the rest come from family. It helps you stay within budget while keeping the magic alive.

Use the joy of anticipation –Waiting is part of the fun. Studies show that looking forward to something can bring as much happiness as the event itself. Spread out smaller treats across the season so children learn to appreciate the build-up.

Encourage the joy of giving –

Help your child give to others, whether that’s donating toys, baking for neighbours or making cards for care homes. These small acts foster empathy and create lasting memories beyond what’s under the tree.

CHRISTMAS WITH FOOD ALLERGIES

Netmums asked leading paediatric allergy doctor José Costa from The Children’s Allergy Clinic to share his must-know tips for parents on how to keep your child safe this season, while still soaking up the festive magic.

For most families, Christmas is a time for festive food, family gatherings and sweet treats galore. But if your child has a food allergy, it can feel like a minefield of unknown ingredients, buffet tables and worry. With food playing such a big part in seasonal celebrations – school fairs, nativity parties and family get-togethers – it’s natural to feel anxious about how to keep your child safe and help them feel included.

1

“It’s natural to feel anxious about how to keep your child safe and help them feel included”

Always carry a safe treat

From spontaneous visits to Santa to surprise sweets handed out at Christmas markets, festive food can pop up in the most unexpected places. “This time of year, it is especially easy to be caught off guard,” says Dr Costa. “Whether visiting Santa and being offered an edible gift, or a Christmas train ride with treats on board, food is everywhere. By carrying your own safe, tasty treat, you can be more at ease knowing that your child will have something tasty to enjoy and won’t feel left out.”This could be a mini bag of safe chocolates, a festive cupcake from home, or your child’s favourite allergy-friendly snack tucked into your bag.

Don’t leave home without medication

Even if you’re just popping to a neighbour’s house for carols and mince pies, it’s essential to have your child’s allergy medication with you, just in case. “Carrying your allergy medication everywhere you go can help give you and your family that extra boost of confidence and peace of mind, knowing that you are ready should a reaction occur,” says Dr Costa. “Insulated bags are a great way to ensure your child’s medication is always close by and kept at a safe temperature (between 20°C and 25°C).”

3

Communication is everything

It can be awkward, but speaking up about your child’s allergies is essential, especially when food is being prepared by others. “Even with the very best of intentions, extended family members and friends may not always get it right when preparing food for your child,” warns Dr Costa. Talk with family and friends in advance about how they can best prepare food to keep your family safe. If in doubt, suggest bringing your own dish or popping over after food has been served.

Host at home

Taking control of the menu can massively reduce stress, especially for children newly diagnosed with food allergies. “Families living with allergies can often make the best hosts,” says Dr Costa. “Being safe in the knowledge that you’re in your own home and that you have safely bought and prepared the food, can mean that you can relax.”

“If

in doubt, suggest bringing your own dish or popping over after food has been served”

DEBATE: WHEN SHOULD YOU PUT UP YOUR CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS?

Two mums. Two

VERY different approaches to Christmas trees. One big festive question: how early is too early?

‘Our tree is up in November – and I don’t care who judges me’ Tuesday Williamson is Netmums’ Sales Manager and a mum of three. She says:

“I’m not even going to pretend we wait. Our decorations start going up in October. Yup – OCTOBER. First, it’s the fairy lights in my youngest’s room. Then, by early November, the full Christmas tree is up in the living room.

People always ask me why we start so early. It’s simple: time. My husband and I both work full time, and weekends are our only proper family time. If we waited until mid-December, we’d barely get a weekend to put the decorations up. So for us, going full festive early means more time to actually enjoy it all.

Once it’s up, we dive straight into festive mode: hot chocolate, Christmas movies, gingerbread houses, letters to Santa, the works. The kids love it, and honestly, I do too. It’s a way to bring some sparkle into the everyday chaos of packed lunches and school runs. We usually take everything down around the 22nd, before we go to my sister’s house for Christmas. That way, when we come back in January, we return to a tidy, calm house – not one full of deflated tinsel and droopy reindeer. I know people think we’re mad, but to me, Christmas is a feeling – and if putting the tree up early helps us squeeze more joy out of the season, why not?”

‘We wait until mid-December –and it’s so much better that way’ Lou Sherlock is an Associate Editor at Netmums and a mum of two. She says:

“Don’t get me wrong, I love Christmas. The music, the food, the fun. But I’ve learned the hard way that if you start too early, the magic kind of... fizzles out.

We used to be those people who decorated on 1st December. But by the time Christmas actually arrived, the tree was half-dead, the baubles were rolling under the sofa, and I’d vacuumed up enough pine needles to stuff a cushion. Not exactly the winter wonderland I was going for.

And then there’s the kids. As soon as they spot tinsel, they go into full Christmas frenzy. It’s like Elf meets sugar rush. Every morning becomes, ‘Is it Christmas yet?’ on repeat. And if you’ve still got three weeks to go, it’s EXHAUSTING.

So now, we wait until mid-December. Usually around the time school breaks up, when the kids are already buzzing, and we can ride that excitement wave all the way through to New Year. Putting the tree up then feels like the moment that Christmas really begins, and we actually enjoy it more.

Plus, the tree looks great all through the big day and the holidays. We leave it up until 1st January so we can enjoy that lovely, lazy week between Christmas and New Year when no one knows what day it is and eating chocolate for breakfast is totally fine.

To me, part of the magic is in the buildup, and if you start too soon, the sparkle fades before Santa even gets in his sleigh.”

‘I’m a counsellor, here’s what parents need to know about autism in girls – and how to spot the signs of masking’

Autism in girls can look very different from what we’ve been taught to expect. Emma Page is a Netmums Parent Supporter and a Counsellor who works with teens. Here she discusses what to look out for and where to seek support if you think your daughter has autism.

If you’re a parent who’s ever looked at your daughter and thought, “Something just feels off, but I can’t quite explain it,” you’re not alone.

With the release of brain scientist Gina Rippon’s book The Lost Girls of Autism, it’s becoming more widely recognised that autism in girls can look very different from what we’ve been taught to expect. And because of that, so many girls slip through the cracks, undiagnosed until much later in life.

anxious or starting to shut down. Yet at school, everything looks fine. So when parents try to raise concerns with teachers, they’re met with surprise: “Really? But she seems absolutely fine here.” Sound familiar?

The invisible struggles of autistic girls

One of the reasons autism in girls can go unnoticed for so long is because it often hides in plain sight – they can be incredible at masking, something many of us might recognise in ourselves, too. Girls are taught from a young age to be polite, kind, gentle, look out for others and not to “make a fuss.” And they take that seriously. So seriously that they become experts at hiding their discomfort. But inside? It’s a different story.

“One of the reasons autism in girls can go unnoticed for so long is because it often hides in plain sight”

As a Counsellor, I often meet girls in their teenage years, particularly around the transition to secondary school, who have suddenly stopped coping the way they used to. Maybe they’re having emotional outbursts at home. Maybe they’re exhausted, overwhelmed,

These girls might spend hours after school replaying conversations in their heads, worrying they said the wrong thing. They might cry in their rooms, emotionally drained from a day of pretending to be “normal.”

“If you’re starting to suspect your daughter may be autistic, you don’t have to figure it out alone”

Many have intense interests, just like boys on the spectrum, but theirs are often more socially acceptable: animals, crafts, certain books or celebrities, TV shows they know every line of. They may ‘stim’ in subtle ways, like twirling their hair, pacing, listening to the same song on repeat or seeking comfort in soft textures or beloved teddies long past the ‘usual’ age.

The big shift: why secondary school is a turning point

Primary school often provides a protective little bubble: one teacher, one classroom, predictable routines and a small circle of friends. But secondary school? It’s a sensory and social rollercoaster. Loud, crowded corridors, multiple teachers, new subjects and constant transitions. It’s no wonder so many autistic girls begin to struggle here; it’s like the rug has been pulled out from under them.

‘But isn’t this just normal teen girl stuff?’

Great question, and one I hear all the time. Lots of teenage girls worry about friendships, feel anxious or have strong interests. That’s why understanding autism in girls can be so tricky. There’s a lot of overlap and every child is different. I encourage parents to observe, not just the meltdowns or emotional moments, but the good days too. Keeping a simple log of what’s

happening and when can reveal patterns: what triggers distress, what brings calm.

From there, we can begin to explore what’s going on underneath. Often, what looks like ‘drama’ or ‘moodiness’ is a sign your child is working really hard just to get through the day.

Getting support

If you’re starting to suspect your daughter may be autistic, you don’t have to figure it out alone. For more information on how to request an autism assessment, the National Autistic Society has a great resource. (tinyurl.com/wh2xb6fk)

Trust your instincts. If something doesn’t feel quite right, it’s okay to ask questions. It’s okay to seek support. And it’s okay to say, “I think my daughter might be masking more than I realised.”

If this resonates with you and you have further questions regarding your child, head to the Netmums Child Mental Health Board (tinyurl.com/bdhdp5a5) and the team will get back to you within 24 hours.

LEARN WITH LEGO® PLAY

Diana Ringe Krogh, vice president and head of social responsibility at the LEGO Group, talks us through their new interactive online activities – designed to help parents, caregivers and children build shared confidence and understanding in the world of digital play.

Research from the LEGO Group’s 2024 Play Well report showed that 61% of parents say their child knows more about technology than they do, and 63% want to understand it better so they can keep up.

To support families, the new series of

activities – Build & Talk, This or That, and Audio Adventure – are available on the LEGO Group’s Families website, offering fun, simple ways for families to start important conversations about digital wellbeing and online gaming.

As the digital world becomes a bigger part of children’s lives – from how they play and learn, to how they build friendships and express themselves – many parents and caregivers are looking for ways to better support their children online and keep them safe, especially when it comes to gaming. These new activities are designed to help make that first step feel easy and playful –turning everyday moments into meaningful conversations about life online.

The new activities are designed to give parents and caregivers easier and more playful ways to have conversations about the digital world together with their children.

“Many parents and caregivers are looking for ways to better support their children online and keep them safe”

BUILD & TALK

(for ages 6-9) helps younger children explore topics such as online kindness, screentime, and gaming through playful building prompts and storytelling, in a brandnew gaming-themed activity.

THIS OR THAT

(for ages 9-12) invites families to play an interactive question-based game. Through active movement and lighthearted choices, children and parents explore values and preferences around digital play.

AUDIO ADVENTURE

(also for ages 9-12) features immersive audio stories set in ‘WowWow-World’, a sandbox-style video game universe. Families follow the adventures of 10-year-old Jamie and make key decisions along the way – giving parents and kids a chance to reflect together on the choices we make in digital spaces.

How to approach the activities

These tools are designed with family life in mind, as we all know how busy day-to-day life can be. This is a playful approach and about

parents and caregivers being led by their children and showing curiosity in how they game, rather than setting rules. The activities are quick to access and fun for families to explore together.

We hear from parents and caregivers, and I know from my own experience, that it can be challenging to have conversations about online experiences and presence with their children, so with these tools, we want to help and support families.

Here are a few pointers to help you get the most out of our tools:

FOLLOW YOUR CHILD ’ S LEAD

At the LEGO Group, children are our role models, so think of your child as your digital play guide. Their questions, ideas, and imagination are powerful starting points for connection. If they love storytelling, try Audio Adventure to imagine a digital world together. If they like quiz games, This or That is a fun way to explore how they think and what they value.

TALK WHILE YOU PLAY

& Talk is designed to keep things hands-on and relaxed. The prompts help guide gentle conversations as you create a fun LEGO build together. I’ve used this with my daughter to have important conversations about how to be a good friend online, what to share and (more importantly) what not to share.

CELEBRATE EVERY SMALL STEP

Continue to have those short conversations about the games they love. These tools aren’t meant to be used all at once – small, regular chats can help build confidence in your child’s digital play for both of you.

Our belief is that when we bring genuine curiosity and connection into digital spaces by exploring what our children enjoy and talking openly about their experiences, we help them build the skills to thrive. We hope these tools can help children, parents, and caregivers in that process.

Families can explore the full range of activities at LEGO.com/families/digital-play

BON VOYAGE!

Rebecca Gatland and her husband took their three children (aged 1, 5 and 9), on a four-day adventure in north-west France, trying a holiday that was a refreshing change from their usual family trips.

As parents to three young children, the idea of taking a family holiday abroad can feel less like a break and more like an Olympic-level event! This summer, we decided to do something a little different to our regular all-inclusive family holiday. We packed up our car, loaded the snacks and crossed the Channel for a four-night stay at Eurocamp in France. We were a little apprehensive at first, as this is something we have not done before. It turned out to be a long weekend full of fun, relaxation and amazing memories made.

Choosing the right location

France is bursting with Eurocamp sites, each offering something slightly different. After listening to first-hand experiences from friends who had already been and reading reviews online, we decided on the Domaine des Ormes site in Brittany. It struck a good balance: a driveable distance from the ferry (we made the journey in under five hours), lots of on-site activities and close enough to picturesque towns and beaches for day trips out.

Space to relax, room to play

Domaine des Ormes offers various accommodation options, from basic tents to more luxurious cabins: all located in a stunning woodland setting. We went for a three-bedroom holiday home nestled amongst the trees with a large decking area – and it was perfect. The kids could run in and out, we had a little kitchen for breakfast and snacks, and they

“The good thing about Eurocamp is that you can go at your own pace”

provided a barbeque should we wish to cook our own evening meals outside.

On-site offerings

This particular site only had two restaurants which, as you can imagine, got very busy during peak times, so having the option to have a barbeque at your cabin was a great alternative. The onsite shop was well stocked with everything you would need to self-cater and they also sold delicious cakes and baguettes –perfect for a quiet picnic in the beautiful grounds. There was another restaurant complex that was still under construction when we visited and, when complete, we feel this will be a big bonus for the site. The site was huge but easy to navigate, and the kids made friends within hours.

Off-site adventures

“Domaine des Ormes gave us the freedom to holiday our way: low-key, outdoorsy and family-focused”

We took a few day trips during our stay and the best being an afternoon visit to Mont Saint-Michel. The children loved exploring the historic site and we enjoyed seeing what the area had to offer. A trip to one of the nearby beaches is also a must: our children enjoyed spending a few hours in the sunshine, building sandcastles and eating ice cream. The good thing about Eurocamp is that you can go at your own pace. There’s no pressure to be out of the door by 9am, and if you want to stay by the pool all day then great, or if you fancy a full day out exploring, there is lots to see and do.

A proper family break

The added bonus of having a free kids club meant the children could have a little independence and play with other children of a similar age. However, be aware that children have to be over five years old to be left alone during the daily activities. We visited over a weekend during term time and so the evening shows were not running, however this didn’t mean the kids were ready to go to bed! The on-site bar had music inside and outside and the children absolutely loved the karaoke night. There was also an area with arcade games that kept the kids entertained when they weren’t dancing or singing.

Activities for all

There was a beautiful indoor pool complex with slides, a wave machine, a lazy river and an outdoor pool with slides; both were a huge hit with our children. There was also a lake for fishing or to hire pedalos, a mini-golf course, a tree top adventure course, a carousel, archery, horse riding and even a zip-line, which our seven-year-old insisted on going on numerous times!

If you have room in the car, then taking the kid’s bikes would be a good idea, as the site is great for family bike rides through the forest. However, there are bikes available to hire if you wish. It is worth noting that most of the activities require you to pre book and pay for via the resort’s app, which was a simple and straightforward process.

There is so much to do to fill your days here, we didn’t hear the words “I’m bored” once. We had the best time making memories and experiencing new things, which the resort made so easy. Domaine des Ormes gave us the freedom to holiday our way: low-key, outdoorsy and family-focused. If you’re looking for a holiday that feels like a real break (for you too, not just the kids), we can’t recommend it enough.

A FAMILY ESCAPE TO REMEMBER

If you’re dreaming of a sun-soaked holiday that is suitable for the whole family, look no further than the Princess Andriana Resort & Spa in Rhodes, Greece. Joanne Lewis visited with her husband and two kids, Bonnie (6) and Archie (12).

From the moment we arrived, the resort’s hospitality shone through. Friendly faces greeted us with cool refreshments and a warm smile. The reception area had a cosy, inviting atmosphere and check-in was a breeze. The children were thrilled to receive welcome gifts – a Tic Tac Toe game and a cuddly teddy bear – which set the tone for a holiday full of joy.

We were whisked away to our room by a cheerful staff member on a golf cart, much to the children’s delight. Along the way, he pointed out key spots around the resort and suggested where we could grab a bite to eat after our journey. It was the perfect start.

Family room with a splash

“There’s a genuine warmth here that transforms guests into part of a big, happy holiday family”

Our home for the week was a Family Room with a sharing pool – a hidden gem for families. Located in a block of 12 ground-floor apartments, each room had direct access to a shared pool via a private terrace. It was ideal for cooling off in the midday heat, especially for our daughter, who preferred quieter moments away from the main pool. Safety was clearly

a priority, with gated access to the pool ensuring peace of mind for parents.

Inside, the room was beautifully decorated and filled with thoughtful extras: a fresh fruit platter, sparkling wine, beach bag, robes and a mini bar that was stocked daily with water and soft drinks.

The layout was perfect for families. Two sofa beds in the living area and a large double bed in the bedroom could be separated by sliding doors, which was great for early risers who want a quiet coffee before the kids wake up.

Waterpark wonders

“The team was fantastic: multilingual, enthusiastic and gentle with shy children like Bonnie”

Ask our kids what they loved most and they’ll shout: “The waterpark!”. Brand new and bursting with fun, it became our daily destination. The Aqua Tower was a hit with all ages. Archie and Bonnie spent hours on the smaller slides, eagerly waiting for the giant pirate bucket to tip – cue squeals of laughter and splashes galore.

“From high-fives at breakfast to poolside games and personalised touches in the room, the staff go above and beyond to make children feel welcome”

The area was spotless and wellsupervised by lifeguards, giving us confidence to relax while the kids played. Archie couldn’t get enough of the highspeed slides, especially the thrilling ‘Black Hole’. For those of us less daring, there were gentler options that still delivered plenty of fun.

“Ask our kids what they loved most and they’ll shout: ‘The waterpark!’”

Bonnie adored the spray zone, darting through jets of water and manning the water cannons like a pro. Even the grownups joined in! A separate toddler pool ensured the littlest guests had their own safe space to splash. And the cherry on top? The Gelato stand! Ice cream on tap, with endless toppings – need we say more?

Beyond the excitement of the waterpark, the resort’s expansive main pool offers a more relaxed setting, complete with an adjacent children’s pool and an abundance of immaculately maintained sunbeds – perfect for unwinding under the Greek sun.

Kids Club adventures

The Kids Club was a haven for creativity and play. Housed in its own building with a dedicated play

park, it offered a safe and engaging space for children to unwind. Split into two age groups –Mini Club (4-7) and Junior Club (8-12) – it catered perfectly to our children’s different interests. The team was fantastic: multilingual, enthusiastic and gentle with shy children like Bonnie. Activities included crafts, games, treasure hunts and evenings wrapped up with a lively mini disco featuring all the holiday classics.

For sporty families, the resort has plenty to offer. My husband and son were able to rent tennis and padel equipment and joined nightly football tournaments. There was even football darts – a quirky twist that had everyone laughing.

A weekly activity board outside the buffet restaurant listed everything from water polo to beach volleyball. Whether you’re an active traveller or just looking to try something new, there’s always something happening.

Delicious for all ages

Food was a highlight of our stay. The main buffet restaurant offered a wide variety of dishes, with themed dinners each night and attentive staff who checked for allergies or dietary needs. Breakfasts were a feast: pancakes, waffles, fresh fruit, pastries and hot selections that kept everyone happy. We also dined at the Italian, Coral BBQ, and Moonlight a la carte restaurants. Each provided exceptional service and delicious meals. The Coral BBQ, set right on the beach, was especially memorable. Our waiter not only served us with flair, but

“While the resort offers plenty to keep you entertained, we highly recommend venturing out”

also showed the children how the BBQ worked, turning dinner into an interactive experience.

Magical evenings and local adventures

After dinner, we’d head to the main pool area for the nightly fountain show – a dazzling display of lights and water that captivated both kids and adults. Then it was off to the amphitheatre for evening entertainment, which was a mix of music, dance and family-friendly performances.

While the resort offers plenty to keep you entertained, we highly recommend venturing out. A short taxi ride took us to Lindos, a picturesque village with cobbled streets, whitewashed houses and an ancient acropolis offering breathtaking views.

For a more relaxed outing, the Kiotari Little Train – stopping right outside the hotel – provided an hour-long scenic tour of the coastline.

A resort that understands families

What truly sets Princess Andriana apart is its thoughtful approach to family travel. From high-fives at breakfast to poolside games and personalised touches in the room, the staff go above and beyond to make children feel welcome. There’s a genuine warmth here that transforms guests into part of a big, happy holiday family.

Whether you’re seeking adventure, relaxation or quality time with loved ones, Princess Andriana Resort & Spa delivers an unforgettable experience. It’s not just a place to stay – it’s a place to create lasting memories.

A PARENT’S GUIDE TO

d y slexia

Is your child falling behind in reading or writing? Is homework a battle or are spelling tests a weekly source of frustration? If so, your child might be dyslexic. The British Dyslexia Association explains how to spot the signs and support your child.

memory, organisation and processing speed. About one in ten people have dyslexia. Dyslexia has nothing to do with intelligence – in fact, many dyslexic people are highly creative, strong problemsolvers and original thinkers.

“Supporting a dyslexic child can feel daunting, but with the right

HOW DO I KNOW IF MY CHILD HAS DYSLEXIA?

No two dyslexic children are the same, but there are some common signs to look out for:

Early years

Delayed speech or difficulty learning new words

Struggles with rhyming or learning nursery rhymes

Difficulty remembering the alphabet or the order of days and months

Trouble recognising letters and matching them to sounds

Avoiding books or a disinterest in learning to read

School age

Slow, effortful reading that may not improve over time

Trouble with spelling, even with common or frequently used words

Confusion with similarlooking letters (like b and d), which persists through primary school and beyond.

Difficulty copying from the board or organising ideas in writing

Low self-esteem or frustration around reading-related tasks

What should I do if I think my child has dyslexia?

If you think your child may be dyslexic, start by speaking to their teacher or Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO) at school. Schools can sometimes carry out screening tests that can help them understand your child’s strengths and areas of challenge and give indications of whether they are dyslexic or not. Schools may also offer additional support or interventions, and they can advise on how you can support your child at home.

A full diagnostic assessment –carried out by an educational psychologist or specialist teacher – provides a much more detailed picture of your child’s strengths and challenges. This can help schools to tailor support, but it can often only be accessed by paying privately.

Beyond reading

and writing

Short-term memory difficulties

(e.g. forgetting instructions)

Poor sense of direction or trouble telling the time

Struggles with sequencing tasks or remembering facts in order

Difficulty with concentration and staying on task

“Everyone learns differently –and that’s a strength, not a flaw”

Many of these signs can, of course, appear in children who are not dyslexic, but if you notice some of these patterns persist over time, it may be a good idea to explore further.

How can I help my child at home?

Supporting a dyslexic child can feel daunting, but with the right approach and encouragement, they can thrive. It is important to talk positively about dyslexia and help them understand that dyslexia is just one part of who they are. Share stories of successful dyslexic people –from chefs, scientists, authors, inventors and entrepreneurs.

Many dyslexic children experience feelings of frustration, embarrassment or anxiety, especially if they compare themselves to their peers. Try to listen without judgment and remind them that everyone learns differently – and that’s a strength, not a flaw. Build in moments of success outside the classroom to boost their confidence. Whether it’s baking, dancing, coding or building LEGO masterpieces, make time for the things that bring them joy and make them feel great about themselves.

And remember, with early identification, the right support and lots of encouragement, dyslexic children can flourish, not just in school, but in life.

“Try to listen without judgment and remind them that everyone learns differently” HERE ARE SOME PRACTICAL WAYS YOU CAN HELP

Focus on strengths

Celebrate your child’s talents, whether that’s art, building things, storytelling, sport or empathy. A child who feels valued is more resilient and motivated to tackle challenges.

Make reading enjoyable

Read together often and make it a relaxed, pressure-free experience. Audiobooks, graphic novels and reading apps can all be valuable tools. Let your

child choose books that interest them, even if they are ‘below’ their reading level.

A E X S

Use multisensory techniques

Dyslexic children benefit from learning through seeing, hearing, saying and using at least two of these at the same time. Use letter tiles, sand writing, singing or movement games to reinforce learning.

Break tasks into small steps

Chunking instructions and using visuals (like checklists or picture schedules) can help reduce overwhelm and build independence.

Be patient with spelling

Focus on key words or patterns rather than individual mistakes. Encourage the use of spell-check tools or predictive text when appropriate.

Every October, Dyslexia Awareness Week shines a light on the experiences of dyslexic children, young people, adults and their families. It’s an opportunity to challenge misconceptions, celebrate neurodiversity and promote better understanding in schools and communities. FEEL-GOOD

FIBRE: THE SECRET INGREDIENT TO FAMILY WELLNESS

Nutritional health coach

and author,

Madeleine Shaw, explains why fibre is such an important part of our diet and suggests some quick and easy ways to get the whole family eating more fibre.

In today’s busy world, it’s easy to overlook the simple things that make a big difference to how we feel – and fibre is one of the biggest unsung heroes in nutrition. From supporting gut health to helping us feel fuller for longer, fibre plays a vital role in every stage of life, yet most of us, including our

kids, aren’t getting nearly enough.

Recent data shows that just 9.88% of children (aged 18 months to 18 years) and only around 4% of adults in the UK meet the recommended daily intake of fibre. For adults, this is 30g per day, while for children: 2- to 5-year-olds need about 15g of fibre a day; 5- to 11-year-olds need about 20g; and 11- to 16-year-olds need about 25g.

It’s a quiet gap in our diets, but one that has a powerful knock-on effect on everything from digestion and immunity to energy, hormone balance and mood. So what exactly is fibre and how can we bring more of it into our family meals without it feeling like another job on the to-do list?

What is fibre and why does it matter?

Fibre is the part of plant foods that our bodies can’t digest, but it still plays a

“More and more research is connecting fibre intake with better mental wellbeing, hormonal balance and long-term weight management”

crucial role. It helps keep our digestive system moving, feeds the friendly bacteria in our gut, stabilises blood sugar levels and supports heart health. It also helps us (and our children) feel satisfied after meals, which can reduce cravings for ultra-processed snacks later in the day.

3 EASY FIBRE-FRIENDLY RECIPES

Sometimes we just need a few go-to recipes to take the pressure off. Here are three of my family-friendly favourites, each designed to bring more fibre and flavour to your weekly rotation. To view the full recipes, see pages 67-69.

BANANA BREAD WITH WALNUTS

ASPARAGUS & FETA FRITTATA

Naturally sweet, full of fibre from bananas and wholegrains, and topped with healthy fats from crunchy walnuts. Perfect for lunchboxes, after-school snacks or with a cup of tea on a Sunday afternoon. This one-pan wonder is protein-rich, packed with greens, and ideal for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Pair it with a slice of seeded toast or a spoonful of lentil hummus to easily add an extra 5g of fibre.

MANGO & GREEK YOGURT SWIRL POPSICLES

And the benefits go beyond the physical. More and more research is connecting fibre intake with better mental wellbeing, hormonal balance and long-term weight management.

Protein + fibre: the glow combo

One of the most powerful ways to feel more energised, beat the bloat and maintain a healthy weight, especially for busy parents, is to combine fibre and protein at each meal. Protein helps build and repair the body, while fibre slows digestion, keeping us full and reducing blood sugar crashes. Together, they’re the dream team for stable energy, better moods and feeling your best from the inside out.

Naturally sweetened and probiotic-rich, these are a gut-friendly win for kids, especially when made with added chia seeds or blended oats for that hidden fibre hit.

SUNDAY MEAL PREP = A MIDWEEK LIFESAVER

One of my favourite family rituals is a gentle Sunday prep session and it doesn’t need to take hours. Just 30 to 45 minutes can transform the week ahead.

TRY THIS SIMPLE FORMULA:

Roast a tray of mixed veg (add lentils or chickpeas for a fibre boost)

Boil a batch of wholegrains like quinoa or brown rice

Bake a loaf of banana bread or a batch of oat muffins

Make a simple snack like the popsicles or some hummus and crudités.

“Fibre is one of the biggest unsung heroes in nutrition”

Having even a few building blocks prepped makes weekday meals quicker, healthier and far less stressful, especially when kids are hungry and you’re juggling the evening routine.

SIMPLE FIBREBOOSTING WINS

Adding fibre doesn’t need to mean an overhaul of your entire weekly shop. Here are some easy 5g fibre upgrades that can be added to any meal:

Stir a tablespoon of chia or ground flaxseeds into porridge or smoothies

Add lentils to soups, pasta sauces or traybakes

Swap white rice or pasta for wholegrain versions

Toss chickpeas or black beans into salads or wraps

Blend 1 tablespoon of oats into pancake or muffin batter

When these small tweaks become second nature, you’ll be amazed at how quickly you start to feel the difference, from regular digestion to that lighter, clearer-headed glow.

The bigger picture: wellness is 360°

It’s also worth remembering that health isn’t just about what’s on our plate. True wellness comes from looking at our day as a whole, including what we eat, how we move and how we unwind. That’s why I always encourage parents (and kids) to build small rituals into their routine:

Daily movement, like a walk to the park or a stretch in the kitchen.

Mindful moments, such as a few deep breaths before meals or a short evening meditation. Meal planning, not perfection, just a rough plan to take pressure off midweek decisions.

Want more easy, affordable wellness ideas?

AUTUMN ADVENTURES

Autumn is the perfect season to grab some wellies and a coat – and get exploring! Julia Packwood, founder of Nurturing Wild Ltd, suggests some free family fun that can be found out and about in nature.

Autumn is a season full of colours and textures to delight the senses. Through the eyes of a child, this evokes a sense of excitement about the natural world, especially as it begins to transform around us week by week.

Soon, the paths will be covered in a deep carpet of golden hues and crunchy leaves underfoot. During the autumn months, spending time outdoors offers fun, free experiences to enjoy together as a family. In the UK, there’s a wide variety of trees and many of which are deciduous in autumn (dropping their leaves). Autumn offers an abundance of fallen ‘treasures’ and this is a wonderful opportunity to engage children in exploring wildlife. It is important that we teach our children about the natural world; they are the

future caretakers of the planet and early childhood experiences with nature matter. In the wise words of poet

“Spending time outdoors offers you and your family a break from screen time”

William Wordsworth, “Let nature be your teacher.”1

A daily dose of nature

According to the Raising the Nation Play Commission report in 2025, outdoor play has declined by 50% in a generation. 2 Spending time outdoors offers you and your family a break from screen time and has many benefits for health and wellbeing.

As a busy mum with two young children, I find that there are times when my children are full of beans, so we get active outdoors by running and balancing on logs to release high energy. Other times, we take a slower pace to spend time looking with curiosity at nature around us, such as finding minibeasts under fallen leaves.

Go on a nature walk

Truly, it really is this simple! Put on your coat and boots and go on a walk with your child outdoors in nature. Explore local green spaces and parks that ideally have trees. Talk about the changes that you can see. If you visit regularly, you will begin to see changes week by week. They may be subtle at first, but as we get deeper into the season, the changes will become a more noticeable contrast.

It can feel less inviting in the colder and darker months, but once you get over the threshold and out the door, even if just for a short walk, it is beneficial for everybody. If you live in an urban area, remember that nature can be found all around us. Look out for wild spots, pay attention to the trees nearby, listen to the birdsong and feel the sensation of the wind blowing against your skin. Time outdoors offers us a valuable multi-sensory experience.

Slow down

On a walk with your child, rather than aiming to get from one place to the next, try to allow moments to slow down the pace and offer opportunities to pause. What can you see? Often, the most magical moments during my nature play sessions happen when a child notices, and if you move too quickly, it might be missed! Tuning in to your surroundings and being present in the moment is a mindfulness activity that supports everyone’s well-being.

What to wear

Autumn days can range from mild temperatures to cooler winds, so it’s useful to check the weather forecast before heading outdoors. On damp days, wear a waterproof coat with a hood and wellies to help you and your child keep dry. Wearing layers is key to staying comfortable this time of year outside. Layers create air pockets, which help to keep us warm. You can add an extra layer or remove one if the weather changes, which can often be the case in autumn. The main message here is to be prepared.

“Time outdoors offers us a valuable multi-sensory experience”

No pick! No lick!

In the mild, damp autumn weather, it is common to see lots of fungi. It is exciting to look at the different shapes and sizes. Children love to explore the world around them using their senses. Very young children may be tempted to put objects in their mouth (this is a stage of development). Unless you are certain about the identification of a plant/ fungi as a confident forager, then it is best to discourage children to pick and taste these, as some varieties are toxic. Be vigilant as a parent or carer, but also remember that this is a good opportunity to teach your child about keeping safe. In Forest School settings often the phase, ‘No pick, no lick!’ is commonly used.

5 IDEAS FOR AUTUMNSCAVENGER THEMED HUNTS

It is important that we teach our children to identify common plants and animals. Not only will this help them to build knowledge and understanding about the natural world around them, but also extends their vocabulary and provokes questioning – get ready for lots of WHY questions! Don’t worry about having all the answers, this is something you can learn about together by taking a photo and looking it up together on an identification app, spotter book from your local library or online when you are back at home. Remember that PLAY = LEARNING!

Make it a fun game and become nature explorers on the hunt for: Autumn colours

There are so many colours to find, especially under trees. For young children it can be helpful to show examples of the colours by tying ribbons (select the colours you are likely to see outdoors in autumn e.g. red, orange, yellow, brown, green) onto a stick – what colours can you find and match?

Leaf shapes for tree identification

Explore identifying trees around you by looking at differentshaped leaves. The distinctive curly edges of an oak leaf next to a maple leaf will spark conversation. Compare and talk about the similarities and differences. This will support your child’s observational skills and build their vocabulary. Take a spotter sheet/use an app and identify different types of trees by their leaves.

Seeds

Look on the ground and on tree branches and flowers that have finished blooming. Collect seed heads of flowers in your garden and keep them to sow again in the spring. Look out for animals who will also be busy collecting seeds and preparing for the winter ahead. You are likely to spot squirrels collecting acorns and burying them under the ground. You may spot seeds such as conkers, acorns, sweet chestnuts or helicopter seeds, which are found on trees such as ash and sycamore.

Fungi spotting (no pick, no lick!)

Can you find different varieties to look at such as bracket fungi (shelf-like) and different shapes such as jelly-ear? Fungi often grow on damp dead wood, such as fallen logs and tree trunks, and are fascinating to look at! Fungi are important for wildlife as a food source and plays a role in the woodland ecosystem acting as a decomposer breaking down deadwood.

Texture hunt

Explore the outdoors using your hands – find rough/ smooth/soft/spikey, bumpy textures, such as prickly conker cases, smooth stones and soft feathers. Your child may be keen to collect and keep a few of their finds. This brings back memories of the ‘autumn nature table’ at school. This is a great way to teach your child the different names of natural objects and at home they could use a magnifying glass to take a closer look.

5 AUTUMN NATURE ART IDEAS:

Leaf art

Make a collage of different autumn leaves, make prints with paint or press the vein-side of a leaf into air dry clay rolled flat to create an imprint of the leaf pattern.

Make an autumn leaf crown

Use a large piece of card (measure to fit around your child’s head) and place fallen autumn leaves along the card with double-sided tape or PVA glue. Wear as a crown!

Create a mandala

Collect fallen fruits, seeds, sticks and leaves and create an autumn mandala. Start by placing natural items in the centre of a circle and repeat with outer layers. Explore patterns such as small yellow leaf, big red leaf and get absorbed in the moment, collaborate as a family together to create a large mandala.

Conker paint and roll!

Collect conkers and place them into a tray/box with a sheet of white paper. Squeeze poster paints (autumn colours) and roll the conkers to create marks and patterns in the paint!

Make an autumn mobile

Find a stick and make a mobile by tying fallen autumnal natural objects on the stick with string. You can keep adding to this as you find more on nature walks.

Ready, steady, play

Be playful as a parent outdoors with your child by following their interests and curiosities in nature. This may feel like a tricky balancing act as often the temptation can be to steer and direct the play. Let your child lead the play and avoid asking lots of questions. Reframe to instead say: “I wonder...”

Don’t forget to jump in autumn leaves!

One of my favourite memories is when I took a group of local families on a nature walk in a local park. We found huge piles of leaves that had fallen and the children wasted no time at all to instinctively jump in. All the adults in the group couldn’t help laughing and smiling along too. It was a moment of joy, which is exactly in my opinion how childhood should be.

“Autumn offers an abundance of fallen treasures”

The key messages are to enjoy the moment, keep it simple, be playful and wear layers! Wishing you and your family fun times spent together outdoors in nature this autumn.

“It is important that we teach our children to identify common plants and animals”

Autumn is full of natural treasures to play with. Collect pinecones, sticks and other fallen natural objects. Rather than a toy that is ‘fixed’ as one thing, these objects lend themselves to imaginative play perfectly. During a seemingly simple walk outdoors in nature, a pile of sticks can lead to den building, logs change to be safe spaces to keep off the floor if transformed to ‘lava’. Tiny holes in the ground and trees are magical fairy and elf homes, the possibilities are endless.

LEAD

CHEER! THE

SportCheer England, the national governing body for competitive cheerleading, explains why now is a great time for your child to give cheerleading a go.

From high-flying stunts to energetic dance routines, cheerleading is one of the fastest-growing youth sports in the UK – and it’s not hard to see why. With a powerful blend of athleticism, teamwork and fun, cheerleading offers children and young people of all ages the chance to get active, make friends and grow in confidence.

At SportCheer England, the national governing body for competitive cheerleading, we’re passionate about helping families discover everything this dynamic sport has to offer.

Why try cheerleading?

Cheerleading is vibrant, inclusive and exciting. Children are drawn to it because it combines elements they love: music, movement, performance and working together as a team. Whether your child is outgoing or a little shy, there’s a place for them in cheerleading. There’s also something for everyone. Competitive cheerleading includes stunts, tumbling (gymnastics-style floor work), dance and jumps. Teams train together to develop routines and perform at competitions. This team-based format helps children learn responsibility, communication and commitment in a positive, encouraging environment.

Mental benefits

Cheerleading builds more than strength and stamina – it builds self-belief. Athletes learn to trust themselves and each other as they master new skills. Performing in front of an audience or at a competition also boosts confidence and resilience.

As a team sport, cheerleading promotes positive mental health through connection and belonging. Young people support one another through challenges and celebrate each other’s successes. Cheerleading also encourages goal-setting, focus and perseverance. Whether it’s perfecting a new tumble or hitting a clean routine, athletes learn that improvement comes from effort and consistency.

Physical benefits

Cheerleading is a full-body workout! It combines strength, flexibility, balance, coordination and cardiovascular fitness in one high-energy sport. Regular training builds muscle tone, core strength and endurance – all while having fun.

Children who cheer develop skills that support other sports too, from body awareness to teamwork and agility. Many cheer athletes also report improved posture, mobility and injury prevention thanks to structured warmups and conditioning.

“Cheerleading builds more than strength and stamina – it builds self-belief”

Cheerleading is also a sport where both girls and boys can thrive. Male athletes often play key roles in stunting and strength-based elements, and all athletes learn to work together regardless of gender.

Participation information

Children can start recreational cheerleading as young as 4 or 5 years old, with many clubs offering ageappropriate programmes from primary age up to teens and young adults. Teams are usually grouped by age and ability, and no prior experience is required.

Cheerleading is also increasingly available through schools, with both extra-curricular and PE-based sessions growing in popularity. Some children enjoy the recreational side of the sport, while others choose to compete in local or national events.

THROW YOURSELF

INTO JUDO

Discover the discipline that builds strength, confidence and focus for life. British Judo Association (BJA) explains why it believes judo is one of the best sports for children, helping them develop physically, mentally and emotionally – all while having fun.

Whether your child loves to tumble, wrestle with their imagination or just bounce off the walls with energy, judo is a brilliant way to channel that enthusiasm. This fun and fast-paced martial art is full of exciting moves, friendly challenges and skills that help kids grow – both on the mat and off. From learning how to fall safely to building focus and confidence, judo turns play into

something powerful, with transferable skills across other sports.

Judo, meaning ‘the gentle way’, isn’t about striking – it’s about balance, leverage and respect. It creates a supportive environment where children can challenge themselves at their own pace, while gaining confidence in a safe

“Children who participate in judo learn how to stay calm under pressure, remain focused and show respect to others, whether they win or lose”

and supervised setting. By developing core skills such as coordination, balance and agility, judo helps build physical literacy and gives children a positive experience with physical activity, setting the stage for a healthy, active lifestyle both now and in the future.

Although judo may look like an individual sport, it’s built on teamwork. Every throw, hold and technique is learned by working cooperatively with a partner, helping each other improve through practice and trust. At its core, judo is based on the principle of mutual benefit; learning and growing together, both on and off the mat.

Training the mind

Judo isn’t just about physical moves, it trains the mind just as much as the body. Children who participate in judo learn how to stay calm under pressure, remain focused and show respect to others, whether they win or lose. These lessons transfer well beyond the dojo and into school, friendships and everyday life.

The structured nature of judo builds discipline and resilience. Children must learn rules, follow instructions and accept feedback – all of which help improve concentration, emotional control and self-esteem.

Judo also promotes goal setting. Earning new belt grades through consistent effort provides a huge sense of achievement and encourages children to keep working hard toward their next milestone.

“Judo, meaning ‘the gentle way’, isn’t about striking – it’s about balance, leverage and respect”

Building fitness

Judo is a game of movement and balance, where the aim is to overcome your opponent by breaking their stability – not through force, but through skill and timing. It’s an excellent way to build overall physical fitness, strengthening muscles, improving coordination and developing flexibility and balance. The dynamic movements involved help children build core strength, spatial awareness and reflexes – all while having fun and staying active.

Regular judo sessions also support healthy weight management, cardiovascular fitness and strong bones. Children will learn to move confidently, fall safely and develop good posture and body control – skills that benefit them in everyday life and other sports.

HOW TO GET STARTED

Getting started with judo is easy and welcoming. Many clubs and local sports centres now offer taster sessions or beginner classes specifically designed for children. These sessions are a great introduction, giving children the chance to learn the basics in a friendly, supportive environment.

WHAT TO WEAR?

Children start off wearing a judo suit called a “Gi”, which is designed for grappling and movement.

Some clubs provide starter kits or offer rental options for new members and children can typically start training in comfortable sportswear before committing to a “Gi”.

WHAT AGE TO START?

Most children can start judo from the age of 5 or 6, with ageappropriate classes focusing on fundamental movement skills, coordination and fun.

Participation and support

Judo is an inclusive sport that is open to all. It’s not about being the strongest or fastest – it’s about learning technique, showing respect and growing at your own pace. Clubs across the UK welcome children from a wide range of backgrounds and abilities, with many offering specialist classes for children with additional needs.

Judo also provides clear development pathways, from beginner level through to national competitions. But for many families, the greatest benefits are found in the weekly routine, supportive friendships and life skills gained on the mat.

The BJA offers a “Start Judo” initiative with beginner-friendly clubs across the country. Scan the QR code below to find your nearest club today.

Final thoughts

Judo is much more than a sport – it’s a foundation for confidence, fitness, respect and resilience. Whether your child sticks with it for a few months or becomes a lifelong judoka, they’ll carry the lessons of judo with them for years to come.

So why not give it a go? Throw yourself into something new and discover the power of judo.

RACKETBALL

Move over padel and pickleball, racketball is taking the UK by storm. With its easy access, low cost and crossgenerational appeal, this fast-growing sport is bouncing into the spotlight, explains UK Racketball.

Racketball (or Squash57 as it can also be known), is a really easy sport to get into for players of all ages.

The rackets are lighter than tennis rackets, but roughly the same size, meaning that it is easy for even complete beginners to start hitting the ball straight away.

The ball is also about the size of a tennis ball and bounces a lot, so the pace of the game is slower than badminton or squash, allowing players to get the hang of it quickly.

The game is played on a squash court, so fully indoors, meaning that it is easily accessible all year round – a great option in the colder and wetter winter months. With the game set on an indoor court, and the aim to hit the ball off the front wall and away from your opponent, it allows for continuous play and a great

a great option in the colder and wetter winter months”

Racketball brings some very positive mental benefits to players of all ages. First off, it can be a great stress release. Racketball provides the opportunity to hit the ball as hard as you like around the court and have a good run around after it, allowing players to get rid of any tension they might have.

Due to the nature of the game and how you need to play it, it encourages creative and tactical thinking, with the ability to create openings and spaces in the court to be able to attack the ball.

Racketball is also a very sociable sport, with club junior sections having regular afterschool or Saturday morning group coaching that brings players from all school ages together to learn and enjoy the game.

Feel the burn

Due to how continuous the play is in racketball and how the ball bounces so much, it is possible to burn up to 1,000 calories in an hour’s game play. While it isn’t as fast or the movements as severe as games like squash or badminton, the rallies keep going and it gives you a great cardio workout.

It helps you to also develop your balance and your footwork coordination, as you learn how to best move to play the ball as well as you can. People very quickly learn to improve their hand-eye coordination when playing racketball to be able to deal with the ball bouncing off the walls so much.

How to get started

There are thousands of squash courts at leisure centres and squash and tennis clubs across the UK, so there should be some in your general vicinity wherever you are. The best place to start is to look on either the UK Racketball (uk-racketball. com) or England Squash websites (englandsquash. com), where both have ‘Club Finders’ for venues near you.

“Racketball brings some very positive mental benefits to players of all ages”

A vast majority of these clubs will have local coaches who will be able to help you get started with your game or be able to recommend groups to join. UK Racketball also has a “How to Play” section, which is well worth checking out for a basic introduction to the rules with some helpful video tutorials.

It’s very easy to get hold of cheap racketball equipment. Karakal (karakal. com) is one of the top providers and do a beginner’s racket and a tube of 2x balls for £30. Leisure centres and clubs should also have rackets for hire or loan for you to get going straight away.

Participation information

Your local clubs will have a variety of ways in which you

can get more involved in the sport. Whether it be through junior mornings or group coaching sessions, or even local club and county tournaments catered to players of all ages and abilities. If you really get to grips with the game and fancy more of a challenge, then the UK Racketball Yearly National Series might be something you want to check out, with tournaments across the UK for all ages.

Over the last few years, the sport has increased considerably across the UK, with participation levels in all UK Racketball events consistently increasing. Due to its comparatively cheap and easy accessibility, it is definitely one to give a go.

UK Racketball is responsible for the growth of the sport across the UK. It is currently working on increasing programs nationwide to ensure all levels of ability can fully participate in the sport. Find out more and get involved at uk-racketball.com
