Focus Area: Witness

College Retreat Program

In 2021 one of the central improvement goals for Catholic Identity at Seton Catholic College was a renewal of the College Retreat Program The goal was for each year group from Years 7 – 12 to focus on a distinct theme This theme would be reflected in the Retreat Program, the Christian Service-Learning Program, and Pastoral Care focus of each year group In 2022 the College Retreat Program was further developed based on the feedback from staff and students in 2021

The Year 12 Retreat was redeveloped due to COVID-19 restrictions, and the overnight stays were omitted The retreat centred on the theme of "The Road Ahead," providing a platform for students to contemplate their connections with peers, family, and God, while being guided by Seton staff

The Year 11 Retreat focused on the theme of Servant Leadership with students completing a two-day retreat facilitated by Youth Ministry Team and Teamworks Year 10 students completed a retreat on the theme of 'Vocation and Life Choices' facilitated by Youth Ministry Team The Year 8 Retreat focused on the theme of Stewardship of Creation This two-day retreat involved one day of Christian Service Learning at Kaarakin Black Cockatoo Conservation Centre and a day learning about 'Harmony with Creation and Stewardship' run by Seton staff Year 7 and 9 students completed retreat days facilitated by Enlighten Education and Goodfellas These Retreat Programs helped students to develop peer relationships, build self-confidence and examine negative stereotypes of boys and girls and explore how these stereotypes can be harmful

In 2023 the Retreat Program will continue to be developed with the inclusion of year group Mass and more opportunities for students to celebrate sacraments of reconciliation and eucharist

Christian Service Learning Program

The Story of Elizabeth Seton

In recent years a central goal for Catholic Identity at Seton Catholic College was to promote the story of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Over the last few years there has been a significant increase in the visibility, awareness and understanding of the story of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton amongst staff and students In 2022 this work of the promotion of the College Patron was continued Seton Catholic College has recently renamed its buildings after Bayley, Carrol, Fillicchi, Saint Peter, and Emmitsburg, all of which are connected to the College Patron, Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton In addition, the College's administration building has been renamed the "Mother Seton Centre," while the main street running through the centre of the College has been named "Paca Street" in honour of Elizabeth Seton To further commemorate Elizabeth Seton, a statue of her has been erected at the entrance of the Mother Seton Centre. These changes aim to create a stronger connection between the physical layout of the College and the life story of Elizabeth Seton, thus providing a more meaningful experience for the College's staff and students.

In the department of Religion and Life students learn about the life of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton in Year 7 and 12. Students are taught her life story and why she is a significant person in the Catholic Church. The annual Seton Day Mass has been developed to highlight and celebrate the life and works of Saint Elizabeth Seton.

Inclusion

Inclusion is a key value of Seton Catholic College's Pastoral Community, and it is connected to the College's RISE values. In 2022, Seton initiated the 'Inclusive Uniform Procedure' project, which involved working parties consisting of staff, students and parents. This project aimed to make small changes that could make a big difference in promoting inclusion. As a result, Seton now offers a short and pant option for all students and has established a consistent hair standard. These changes have significantly contributed to fostering a more inclusive school community.

Team Seton

Team Seton is an initiative that promotes the acceptance of all individuals, regardless of their label It emphasises that all individuals are made in God's image and should be treated with dignity and respect The Team Seton standards have been successfully implemented among the Year 7 and 8 students, as well as the Year 12 students This initiative has positively impacted the College's culture and has created a sense of community among its students, teacher and families

Child Safety Report for Seton Catholic College Pastoral Community

Seton Catholic College Pastoral Community places the safety of its students as its highest priority The College believes that the voice of the child should be heard in all its undertakings and has implemented various measures to ensure that the students feel safe and secure while they are on College premises

Seton uses Microsoft Forms as a tool to receive regular feedback from its students This tool has allowed for a prominent student voice, which helps the school better understand the needs of its students A Wellbeing Survey conducted using Microsoft Forms highlighted that students, on the whole, feel safe and feel a sense of belonging at Seton The feedback received from this survey has been instrumental in shaping the College's procedures to ensure the continued safety of its students

The 2022 Head Boy and Girl Survey provided student feedback which was then addressed at a Leadership and Executive level For example, the feedback received in the last survey highlighted the need for an upgrade to the Canteen and bathroom facilities These upgrades are currently well underway or complete The College believes that by listening to the voice of its students, it can create a safer and more welcoming environment for them

Seton also upgraded its 'Seton Concerns Tile' on its student Seqta platform This tile allows students to report any concerns they may have regarding their safety or wellbeing The school believes that this tool has empowered students to voice their concerns and has allowed the College to address these concerns in a timely and effective manner

Peer Support Program & Leadership Programs

Our thriving Peer Support Program and Leadership Programs continued in 2022 and offered students a chance to lead and induct other students at the College These programs provide a platform for students to develop valuable leadership skills We believe by empowering our students to support each other, it will create a safer and more supportive environment for all students

By working together, the school and families can ensure that students are well supported and can reach their full potential.

Staff Wellbeing

The Seton Wellbeing Program aligns with CEWA Strategic Wellbeing Framework and encourages staff to put wellbeing at the forefront of their daily work practices Having gathered feedback about staff wellbeing and the workplace demands that most adversely affect wellbeing, several strategies were put in place to assist staff to manage their daily workflows

Marking and feedback were identified as key contributors to workload Staff were encouraged to redesign their assessment schedules to reduce the number of assessments in each course Feedback mechanisms were also redesigned to allow for more efficient and effective delivery of feedback

Through Professional Learning days, expert guest speakers presented on developing heathy wellbeing habits, gave examples of practical strategies that staff can utilise, and staff were invited to experience a number of these in practical sessions

Work was undertaken to share amongst all teaching staff, the experiences of a group of innovative teachers who were effectively collaborating via OneNote for the development of Teaching and Learning Programs This process using OneNote was demonstrated to have improved teacher workloads as its ability for easy collaboration and resource sharing meant teaching and learning was overseen by a key teacher and shared amongst teaching teams Individuals still had the ability to modify programs and lessons to suit their classes and students

Formal and structured Professional Development for Non-Teaching Staff was implemented by the College providing an opportunity for personal growth and development Both sessions were conducted by Elevate Wellbeing This will be extended in 2023 through specialised and focused training programs for Education Support Teaching Assistants

The College restructured the ICT Team to reflect best practices in ICT at the College With the appointment of a new ICT Manager in 2022 a mix of external contract technical advice and inhouse support staff provided the best means of

We welcomed our new Seton Principal, Chris Wallace, this year. Chris has already made such a positive impact at Seton. He began the year prioritising meetings with students to ensure he was authentically listening to the Seton student voice. Chris often speaks about the importance of student voice, as well as staff voice and parent voice, as he pursues a Christ centred, child focussed quality education at Seton. It has been a privilege to sit on the Council and witness his community approach to our school, where every stakeholder is valued.

This has been a year where we have all had to be agile as COVID-19 became a reality for us in WA While this has been challenging, it has also demonstrated the strong faith filled community we have at Seton as students, staff and families remained connected to each other and still flourished through flexible learning possibilities and creative opportunities for interaction As a School Advisory Council, we were also affected, starting the year meeting via TEAMs, with many of our meetings becoming a hybrid model of members meeting at Seton and online concurrently

The School Advisory Council transitioned this year from a Board to a Council operating with the new Terms of Reference and is accountable to Catholic Education WA Ltd All new members completed a training session provided by CEWA which covered the Terms of Reference, the four pillars of Quality Catholic Education including Catholic Identity, Education, Community and Stewardship, CEWA Ltd Policy Suite, Executive Directives, Delegations of Authority and the role of a Council member in providing support and endorsement to the Principal and Executive Team

We meet 6 times a year as an Advisory Council on a Tuesday evening The agenda is presented as a series of reports Chris Wallace presents his report on the four pillars of Quality Catholic Education These pillars link to the school’s strategic plan, vision for learning and the school improvement plan There are many initiatives and celebrations we can acknowledge as a college this year within the pillars

Catholic Identity: This year Seton had a focus on staff formation with the completion of the evangelisation plan Many staff have trained as Extra Ordinary Ministers of the Holy Eucharist this year, under the guidance of Father Paul Student retreats, Seton Day and online Mass and prayer celebrations were highlights in this area

Education: Seton’s School Improvement Plan (SIP) has met so many goals in 2022 The rollout of the Vision for Learning and the alignment to the college acronym of RISE continues to showcase the academic rigour and excellence in the area of Education Staff provided an excellent pastoral and comprehensive online program for those students learning from home during the COVID peak Some other foci in this area include the College’s Sporting events and student achievements, the Future Qualified Pathway, Frangelico Arts awards, Performing Arts events and student achievements, and NAIDOC week

Community: Seton’s COVID response this year has been exceptional The clarity, timing and amount of information from a parent perspective was sincerely appreciated Community highlights were the introduction of the Walyalup Catholic School Network with 7 neighbouring Catholic primary schools, culminating in more schools having the opportunity to attend Seton Experience Day and the development of a network that has increased connection opportunities across schools.

The P & F has done a wonderful job in providing opportunities for connecting as a community even amid the challenges of COVID The Mother’s Day bags were so well received, and another highlight was the Father’s Day Breakfast Our community also had so many opportunities to attend many events during the school year including Legally Blonde, the Dance Showcase and the Annual Music Concert as well as many others

Stewardship: The College has had a focus in their school improvement plan on the implementation of the CEWA Strategic Wellbeing Framework This year has also seen planning improvements for the Uniform Shop and Cafeteria for 2023 The introduction of a Kaartidjin Leader has increased Aboriginal connection with the inclusion of this student leader in the Student Council The College received an Architectural Design Award for the Mother Seton Centre Seton's budget, enrolments and financial forecasts are reported on by Peter Farrer-Smith, Director of Finance and Operations Seton has become a school of choice for many in the area with enrolments increasing Funding implications from State government grants continue in 2023; however, the College is in a stable position financially due to comprehensive management and considered planning to strike a balance between the needs of the College while still being an affordable option for Seton families

We would like to acknowledge the work of the Seton P & F for ensuring community events and connections were still able to take place in a year affected by COVID-19

A sincere thank you to Kymberly Florenca for her diligent coordination of agendas, minutes and everything else

Special thanks is also extended to the Seton staff and Executive Team Seton is a College where the staff efforts, time and dedication are so evident Care for every single student is at the core of this dedication, of which we are truly grateful

Parent, Teacher & Student Satisfaction 2022

Seton Catholic College is a diverse, inclusive and thriving community which encourages a ‘voice’ and input from parents, teachers and staff. We realise it takes a village to raise a child and use our Team Seton Philosophy to provide an opportunity for everyone to be onboard. There are a number of opportunities throughout the year for our whole community to express their opinions and reflect on the experiences they have had at the College.

Regular surveys involving students, parent / student/ teacher information evenings, School Advisory Council meetings, P&F meetings, Staff meetings, Weekly Staff Prayer and Briefings, direct contact with the College through the Principal, Deputy Principals or members of staff, as well as communication via SEQTA are some avenues this occurs.

Parents

Parents are the primary educators of their children, and they are supported with the holistic education and faith formation that a Catholic school provides Our families play an extremely important role in the life of our College and to the education of their children at Seton The College’s ‘Team Seton’ initiative was developed to highlight the importance of all members of our community in shaping this holistic development of a student When children see their parents and teachers sharing common beliefs, attitudes, values, and goals, they feel more secure and demonstrate a greater willingness to learn and grow

On the whole parent satisfaction with the College is high, as indicated by the level of parent involvement in extra-curricular activities and Parent/Teacher/Student Information Evenings Anecdotal information around parent perception is also received when a sibling is enrolled at the College and the increased enrolment applications Seton is receiving

Well-qualified end enthusiastic staff Learning Support, Education Support and Extension Programs

A comprehensive Pastoral Care Program, incorporating assistance from Educational Psychologists

An Extra-Curricular Program which extends students’ experience and understanding as education goes well beyond the school day and the traditional structures This program includes:
