DearStudentsandParents,
As this is the first edition of my article for 2024, I would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year! As we kickstart another year, I thought this would be a good chance to revisit our vision – Empowering Lives Through Holistic Education. This vision has been our mantra since the formation of Seri Jubli and has been shared on countless platforms over the years. We are also familiar with our school logo, a Tree, symbolising growth. In recent years, we introduced the core values of the school –VIRTUE (Recap for some: Vigour, Integrity, Respect, Thankfulness, Understanding, Excellence). Did you know we have a motto too? Although not officially introduced yet, our team uses the acronym GLOW – Grow, Learn, Overcome, and Win.
As I reflect on our vision this year, I saw the simplicity and yet profoundness of it. Mission statements, logos, mottos, and objectives are branches of the vision that can reflect a more
detailed narrative and definition of our vision. There is much we can dissect in just these five words, but my recent reflection focuses on the word “Holistic.” We define Holistic as the growth and development of the Head (Cognitive), Hands (Psychomotor), and Heart (Affective).
I am always delighted to see students engage in all the activities arranged by the school: from class lectures to PE lessons, from ICT classes to reading, from competitions to CCAs, from PSDs to house time, from camps to our upcoming Cross Country. We strongly believe in all of them and constantly push for maximum participation because it exercises the muscles of Holisticness.
Renowned Irish poet William Butler Yeats said, “Education is not the filling of a bucket, but it is the lighting of a FIRE.” Thus, the expectation for a full and fruitful schedule we have arranged throughout the year is not merely the end but a means to an end towards seeing student-led, student-driven, and student-initiated initiatives, from rallying donation drives to organising study groups for their friends and buddies looking out for one another.
Our desire is for holistic to mean a wellroundedness of our students, not just memorising values, but internalising our VIRTUE values; being like a tree in our logo that grows organically towards their fullest potential, and to GLOW. We seek to have students be ignited with purpose and impact.
Let us embark on another year of Holistic Education and Press On!
William Butler Yeats (1865 - 1939)
Seri Jubli International School was buzzing with excitement on January 9th as we welcomed the Watoto Children's Choir from Uganda. It marked the start of a fantastic journey of cultural exchange. Everyone eagerly anticipated the arrival of these talented young performers, ready to share the richness of African music, dance, and stories.
On January 10th, the school hall came alive with the rhythmic beats of African drums as the Watoto Children's Choir took to the stage. Guided by Teacher Paulus, who stressed the importance of embracing different cultures, the choir delivered a memorable performance that touched the hearts of all present.
Their songs ranged from traditional Ugandan songs to modern tunes, filling the audience with energy and enthusiasm. Students joined in with clapping, singing, and dancing, creating a joyful atmosphere. A highlight was when students pretended to ride motorcycles along with the choir, symbolising life's ups and downs.
After the concert, the cultural exchange continued with various activities aimed at promoting understanding and
appreciation of different cultures. Students took part in workshops and challenges where they learned about Ugandan traditions and shared aspects of their own culture.
The Authentic Food Challenge brought students together to cook traditional dishes like 'Binyebwa,' a delicious mix of banana, dried fish, tomatoes, onions, and peanut butter. Through cooking and sharing meals, students discovered similarities and differences in their culinary traditions.
In addition to cooking, students engaged in traditional crafts, sports matches (Captain’s Ball), and art projects. They learned about Malaysian culture by creating Wau Bulan patterns, fostering friendships that crossed cultural boundaries.
Some students had the opportunity to host members of the Watoto Choir in their homes, providing an intimate look into daily life and fostering meaningful connections. Families welcomed their guests with warmth and hospitality, introducing them to local delicacies and exploring the sights of Kluang together. Through shared experiences like meals and outings, lasting friendships were formed. We had a chance to interview our hosts to hear about their experience.
For Lee Zi Ang (Year 5) and family, hosting the Watoto children was like having new friends over to play. When Beatrice and Vivian visited, they mostly stayed in their room, but when they came out, they had lots of fun together! They went to eat at a Chinese restaurant, got ice cream at Family Mart, and even went to McDonald’s for yummy burgers. Even though they didn't spend a lot of time outside, Lee Zi Ang's family loved having Beatrice and Vivian around because it made their home feel lively and happy.
Kingsley Chua (Year 2) and family had a blast with Allen, Joy, and Maria! They played games, watched fun shows on TV, and went out to eat some local food called roti canai, which everyone loved. One day, they even went to the Kluang Coffee Factory! It was really cool to see how coffee is made. Kingsley's family loved hearing stories from their new friends and couldn't wait to have more fun together in the future. They laughed a lot and made lots of happy memories, especially when they watched Allen, Joy, and Maria perform their special talents!
Ja'den Toh (Year 7) and family had an exciting time with Calvin and Daniel. They tried yummy food like the famous Ramli burger and went on a bike ride together. Even though Calvin and Daniel were tired sometimes, Ja'den's family made sure they felt at home. They had tasty dinners cooked by Ja'den's mom and talked about all the fun things they wanted to do together. Ja'den wished they could have stayed longer so they could explore even more and make even more memories together, like the peaceful bike ride and the cozy dinners at home.
Maneesh Balachander (Y7) and his brothers had an awesome adventure with Jude and Aaron! They visited a chocolate factory and ate delicious food at a food court. Then, they played games and had fun at the park. Maneesh and his brothers really liked spending time with Jude and Aaron and wanted to stay friends with them even after they left. They had so much fun together, especially when they visited the chocolate factory and played games at the park. They couldn't wait for more exciting adventures with their new friends!
As the Watoto Children's Choir bid farewell, they left behind a legacy of unity and cultural understanding. Their visit reminded us of the importance of embracing diversity and building bridges of friendship across cultures.
Now that the graduation caps have been tossed and the IGCSE examination results are out, it's time for the gang from Seri Jubli International School (SJIS) to reflect on life post-graduation. With the buzz of excitement still lingering in the air, these recently minted alumni share their stories, dreams, and a few laughs about their time at SJIS. From epic wins at sports events to the late-night study sessions fuelled by caffeine and camaraderie, SJIS has been the backdrop to countless memories. So, kick back, grab a snack, and join us as we dive into the post-graduation adventures of the SJIS crew. To kick things off, let's hear from the students who have been with us the longest!
1. How does it feel like to finally graduate?
Time flies so fast, and I can’t even believe I have graduated as I studied in this school for quite a long time since I was 7 years old, watching the school grow and change. I had feelings of excitement and pride, but definitely there was fear too as I’m stepping into a new chapter myself. I also felt incredibly happy to finally end my secondary school after so many years.
1. How does it feel like to finally graduate?
I feel accomplished, a pride, and excitement by finishing so many years of schooling, from Year 1 to Year 11. But also, the feeling of fear, uncertainty, and anxiety; fear of not knowing what will happen in my next stage of life, uncertainty of not knowing what major to choose.
2. Best memories in SJ!
During Teachers' Day, my class managed to perform a 20-minute singing performance, and we took photos with all our beloved teachers and friends. That was my best memory in school.
2. Best memories in SJ!
One of the memories I won’t forget is during the SJ games. As my House was the champion, I felt super happy. Even though I did not contribute much points to the championship, I was happy for my house members who had succeeded.
3. What are you planning to pursue now that you’ve graduated?
I’m planning to further my studies in Singapore.
4. Anything else you'd like to add?
One of the teachers I'm very grateful to have met in my school journey is Tr. Zul. He has been very caring towards us and always there for us when we had problems, offering advice. He's patient and nurturing. I'll never forget all the memories we've had with him.

were worth it even though they were super tiring. I especially remember Teachers' Day when all our classmates made a remix at the end of the celebration!
3. Any interesting/funny stories to share from your time in SJ?
Thinking about it now, actually, I do not have anything to share, at least not on my own. But if you ask about anything funny, ridiculous, or anger-inducing, I bet if all of us were together, we could talk for the whole night! Who punched whom, who never did their homework, who would always be late, who was secretly playing MOBA games in class and got caught, who went to the girls' toilet by mistake… Yeah, even us just sitting around the table was interesting. To me, sitting and talking with my friends was the most interesting thing to do.
4. What are you planning to pursue now that you’ve graduated?
I'm planning to go to college in September, but for now, I'm working as a swim coach. Do come and support!

3. Any interesting/funny stories to share from your time in SJ?
The most memorable experience was the 2023 Annual Camp. That fantastic location, with a river and a hot spring, really made it a great place to bond with friends and teachers. The peak was on the last day of the camp when the school put up the video about the graduating class. I would never forget the mix of emotions I felt when it came to my turn. Before this, I couldn't quite grasp how the graduated seniors felt, but at that moment, it really hit me. I found myself tearing up uncontrollably, realizing that it might be the last time I see some of my teachers and juniors, and I am going to miss them... Another memorable experience was when I helped welcome new students from China. Initially, I was a bit nervous and unsure if I could get along with them. To my surprise, they were very friendly, and I had the opportunity to work on class projects with some of them too. It was really a great experience to collaborate, meet, and get
Oh, I do! There was this one time in school when I noticed a group of girls sitting in the canteen. I approached them, thinking they might be able to speak some Chinese. To my surprise, they responded in fluent English! I was so caught off guard that my face turned as red as a tomato! But instead of laughing at me, they engaged in a conversation and made me feel at ease. It was a funny and memorable moment that actually boosted my confidence in speaking English. And the group of girls became my best friends in school.

4. What are your plans now that you’ve graduated?
Well, I will be continuing my studies in August. In the meantime, I'm going to step out of my comfort zone and gain some real-world experience through part-time jobs. I also want to further improve my speaking skills and boost my confidence, perhaps by joining a public speaking class.
1. How does it feel like to finally graduate?
I had mixed feelings when I graduated. On the one hand, I was, of course, a bit sad because I will not be seeing my classmates as often, as I was classmates with most of them throughout my school years. On the other hand, it's also kind of exciting to finally move on and hopefully experience bigger things in the future. High school is just a stepping stone or a launching pad of sorts to prepare students for university, so I feel good knowing that I have completed part of my "education". I think the best way to describe how I feel about graduating from SJ would be bittersweet.
2. Best memories in SJ!
To be honest, the best moment during my time in SJ was probably when I stepped out of the exam room after the last IGCSE exam. I know that sounds kind of boring: why not think of something more exciting, I told myself, like the performances my class put on in front of the whole school that I was involved in, but I didn’t really enjoy that. Everything else probably gave me more to worry about, but let’s back up a bit. The relief of finally knowing that the thing that caused me so much anxiety and worry last year was finally over is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. However, I can list a few more moments, such as my first annual camp, which was very interesting. I guess the online classes
were enjoyable as well since it felt more like an extended holiday than anything else. Helping with the many MAD project activities was also very rewarding, but I won’t go into too much depth.
3. Any interesting/funny stories to share from your time in SJ?
I can think of a few, but I’m not sure if it’s appropriate to mention them here because some of the funniest things I have seen and experienced are not family-friendly enough to be listed here. Things like weird nicknames and eyecatching situations. Some people may find such things lame and childish, but for some reason, they were interesting to me. I think I can name one here, which is the time a couple of my friends were helping after school, and it was already late at night. I can’t remember what exactly we were helping with, but I remember one of my friends started talking about ghosts because the whole school seemed kind of creepy, and then the lights suddenly went out, and he ended up having the biggest reaction. I thought that was funny!

3. What are your plans now that you’ve graduated? I will be working with family, then only continue studying.
I feel happy to have graduated as I'm now free of any school stress (at least until college, that is). I do kinda miss some of my friends and teachers as I did spend a lot of time with some of them, and I really hope they're doing well.
2. Best memories in SJ!
One standout memory for me has to be the 2022 camp. While I wouldn't say the location was the best or that it was my favourite camp, what I did love about it was the activities we did in our dorm rooms. Since most of my best friends were there, we partied hard. We always had fun and made jokes. It was also the last time I ever got to see Jerrence, who was my best friend since 2019, so it was a bit sentimental to me. We played UNO sometimes, cracked jokes, and just had fun. Although we did accidentally end up breaking the dress rack and then spent an hour fixing it, it was all good memories.
3. Any interesting/funny stories to share from your time in SJ?
Well, I remember in the first year I joined
SJ, I was in the Media Club. During one of our first activities, I made some friends. I was very happy, so I was already acting a bit reckless. While we were playing around, I accidentally tripped and crashed into the wall, making a hole in it (not too big, just hand-sized). I'll admit it was pretty embarrassing, and I got in trouble for it. So please be careful of your surroundings so something like that doesn't happen to you.

5. Anything else you'd like to add?
Good luck to all current Year 11s who have to take the IGCSE, I know it’ll suck. For real though, good luck and study hard; I believe in you. Also, to all the students, enjoy your school life while it lasts because life is going to be hard after that.
