Self Enhancement, Inc. is dedicated to guiding underserved youth and families to realize their full potential. Working with schools, families, and partner community organizations, SEI provides support, guidance, and opportunities to achieve personal and academic success. SEI brings hope to individual young people and enhances the quality of family and community life.
Self Enhancement, Inc. was established in 1981, by Tony Hopson, Sr., a lifelong North Portland resident and community leader. It began as a one-week summer basketball camp aimed at providing a positive alternative for African American teens living in an area of Portland that was leaving them behind.
By 1989, SEI had grown into a year-round program providing academic support and comprehensive wraparound services for African American students and their families. In 1997, SEI opened the Center for Self Enhancement, which continues to serve as a safe haven for thousands of children and is the hub of SEI’s work. SEI has remained a pillar in the North Portland community and continues to expand its programs to provide youth and families with a continuum of services.
Today, SEI is a comprehensive, one-stop resource for youth and families, primarily African Americans and others living in poverty or seeking culturally responsive services. It is also one of the city’s leading multi-service organizations, providing thousands of youth, families, and adults with a wide array of educational and social services on an annual basis. SEI’s strength is in its ability to meet the complex needs of the children and families it serves, including helping people to overcome cultural, educational and economic barriers.
SEI is committed to helping youth and families realize their full potential. SEI believes that every child has a gift and that it is our shared responsibility to help every child find that gift. By expanding learning opportunities and teaching every child that “Life Has Options,” SEI is seeing amazing results proving that SEI is the solution.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT
There is much to be said about the trials and the tribulations of the past few years. Pandemics, racial unrest, gun violence, houseless people and a war in Ukraine. For many these are all reasons to give up, give out or just give in. In our SEI world of service none of these things are options. There is no future without hope, there is no success without opportunity. We believe in “Excellence without Excuses.”
SEI fully understands and respects the many challenges we are faced with. However, we refuse to believe that the sun will not shine again. We will provide the support, opportunity, direction, love and hope for all individuals within our service system. Over 16,000 people and five school districts are presently served by Self Enhancement, Inc. As the largest African American culturally specific agency in the state of Oregon we are dedicated to helping all of our students and families reach their full potential.
SEI on average graduates 97% of our students, sends 70% to college and 80% become positive contributing citizens. In 2022, 100% of our students graduated high school. SEI’s alumni are successful citizens doing remarkable things. Their impact and our impact have been a positive contribution to our city, state, and the nation.
We believe that SEI is not just another program or agency. We believe that SEI is the solution. We have 42 years of service and outcomes to support our beliefs. We thank you for another successful year. One that would not have happened without the support of so many of you.

Program Overviews
In-School
Our In-School Program begins with students as young as the second grade. Each student is matched with an In-School Service Coordinator who provides 24/7 case management, tracking scholastic achievement, attendance, and behavior.
After-School
Our After-School Program offers academic support as well as exposure to a variety of classes in the areas of health and wellness, arts and performance, life skills, and leadership development.
Summer Program
Each summer, we provide five weeks of full-day programming. The program emphasizes academic enrichment, recreational activities, involvement in the arts, exposure to the community, and preparation for post-secondary education and employment.
Schools Uniting Neighborhoods (SUN)
We manage full-service neighborhood hubs where students and families access educational support, enrichment and recreational activities, skill development, and community involvement programs in 18 schools through contracts with Multnomah County and the City of Portland.
POST-HIGH SCHOOL
We believe in continuing to support our students after they graduate high school to help them be successful. We provide support for developing employment and career goals, entering and succeeding in college, as well as financial literacy and basic life skills.
Keys to Success
continuum of Services
We work with students from elementary school through their 23rd birthday.
Relationship Model
We build long term and comprehensive relationships with students and their families.
Culture of Success
We create positive contributing citizens who lead with integrity and respect.
Comprehensive Approach
We provide wraparound support to create family and community change.
PG.3
Parent Involvement
Our Parent Involvement Program provides case management, support, and networking to address potential barriers to maintaining a healthy family environment and a positive home-school relationship.
Housing & Energy Assistance
We provide short-term rental assistance for families at risk of eviction and work with houseless community members to eliminate barriers to long-term housing. We also assist households at risk of losing power to their home. Our goal is that every family has a warm and safe environment for themselves and their children.
Anti-Domestic and Sexual Violence Program
We provide culturally specific services for African American survivors of violence, sexual assault, stalking, sex trafficking, and other trauma. Our confidential advocates provide consistent support, build trust, rebuild confidence and hope, and empower survivors to reach new goals.
Child Welfare advocacy
We work with children and parents involved with the DHS Child Welfare system to ensure African American families can successfully navigate it. We provide resources so children can remain in their homes, or work to reduce barriers so children can return to the care of their parents.

“SEI helped me stay engaged and motivated in my studies by offering study groups after school, fun field trips, cool incentives, and fun group activities. School became my happy place because of the resources that SEI provided for me. Having a coordinator helps me stay on top of things, and helps me hold myself accountable.”
“As a college student, life can be very challenging and finding your personal support network can be even harder. Through the support of my SEI scholarship and Post-High Coordinator, I have been able to gain the necessary support in purchasing supplies, paying for the majority of my college education and having someone to lean on when times get tough.”

a message from our development director
SEI Family and Friends,
Thank you for making 2022 an incredible year. Last year we had more individual supporters than ever before, and as our network continues to grow, the breadth of SEI's programs and services also grows. We are so grateful for each and every one of our donors, old and new, who have made a difference in the lives of our students, our families, and our community.
Your investment makes this all possible – each and every one of you is an integral part of our success story. No gift is too small and whether you give $10 or $1 million, everyone can be part of our movement towards a more equitable future. I look forward to a new year finding new opportunities, building new relationships, and committing to the belief that Life Has Options.
Anthony Deloney, Director of Development
We believe that every person has a gift, and if you expose someone to enough opportunities their potential will shine through. At SEI, you can support us in helping find those gifts by sponsoring events, donating gifts-in-kind, and helping us connect with community members and businesses who could provide partnerships for our programs.

“SEI has planted a seed that will live in me forever. I've been offered so many opportunities and met so many amazing role models. Without SEI I wouldn't be at the place I’m at right now. No matter where I go, I'm going to follow the SEI Standards at all times, until I reach my full potential.”

“Losing my aunt in July was really hard on my family and I wasn’t prepared to leave or attend school at all. My SEI Post High Coordinator reached out to me and made a plan so I could move into my dorm on time. Since then, SEI has stayed in contact to make sure I am doing well mentally and financially. SEI has been a great support system and I truly appreciate it.”
