SELF ENHANCEMENT, INC. ANNUAL REPORT 2018/19

Complete copies of the audited financial statements for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2019 may be requested from Self Enhancement, Inc.’s Director of Finance & Administration.

PRESIDENT AND CEO

OUR STORY Self Enhancement, Inc. (SEI) was established in 1981, by Tony Hopson, Sr., a lifelong North Portland resident and community leader. It began as a one-week summer basketball camp aimed at providing a positive alternative for African American teens living in an area of Portland that was leaving them behind.

Often times we wonder will my voice matter, does my voice count, will my thoughts be valued or will my contributions go unnoticed? We wonder if our involvement in something larger than us will significantly move progress along or make a difference? We ponder these questions and wonder how we can live a life that is significant to ourselves and is remembered by someone close to us or by many far from us. Sometimes these thoughts seem too daunting to consider, and feel too heavy of a load to lift. We often get too overwhelmed to turn an idea into an action or follow-through on an intentional pursuit of leaving a lasting impact. Often times we have this feeling because we do not realize just how much potential we have or just how much value we bring. Many times what we fear is realizing our own potential. The truth is, everyone has a gift, and everyone should feel inspired to explore opportunities to find that gift and have options to utilize it in their life journey. Each of our gifts have the powerful ability to uplift individuals, transform lives, or elevate communities. It is our duty to not only use our gifts, it is our responsibility to help others find theirs as well.

MESSAGE

FROM THE PRESIDENT

Tony Hopson Sr.

That is what we have done at Self Enhancement, Inc. (SEI) over the past 39 years. Every time a donation is received or a contribution is made to our organization, we utilize our gifts to collectively provide access to opportunities for over 16,000 youth and families who are annually in need of our support. With the help of partners like you, we work to raise up, inspire, guide, and support individuals to not only become the best version of themselves, but to transform the world with their leadership. At SEI, we prepare each voice, each youth, to overcome the greatest educational, cultural, and economic challenges in our society. At the core of what we do, SEI staff and supporters are making the difference youth need to remain in school and reach their full potential. Our youth are supported by a family of guides, teachers, and partners who work one-on-one with students to ensure they graduate from high school at a 96% success rate. With every dollar raised and every contribution made, SEI provides hope to those living in poverty and those needing culturally specific services. Support to our agency makes the difference between a hopeless situation and a brighter future. That is why it is so important for us to come together and continue this work where and when we are needed the most. With your time, talent and/or treasure, you have the ability to join us and leave a lasting mark; a lasting gift for those in need. You can help provide academic support, case management, and family assistance to thousands. We can’t do this work without support and we are grateful for all who are passionate about our cause. This report shows how the smallest to the largest contribution can be the difference an individual needs to thrive. Join us; be a part of the solution and be the difference you want to see, today!

By 1989, SEI had grown into a year-round program providing academic support and comprehensive wraparound services for African American students and their families. In the 1997, SEI opened the Center for Self Enhancement, which continues to serve as a safe haven for thousands of children and is the hub of SEI’s work. SEI has remained a pillar in the North Portland community and continues to expand its programs to provide youth and families with a continuum of services. Today, SEI is a comprehensive, one-stop resource for youth and families, primarily African Americans and others living in poverty or seeking culturally responsive services. It is also one of the city’s leading multi-service organizations, providing thousands of youth, families, and adults with a wide array of education and social service on an annual basis. SEI’s strength is in its ability to meet the complex needs of the children and families it serves, including helping people to overcome cultural, educational, and economic barriers. SEI is committed to helping youth and families realize their full potential. SEI believes that every child has a gift, and that it is our shared responsibility to help every child find his or her gift. By expanding learning opportunities and teaching every child that “Life Has Options,” SEI is seeing amazing results proving that SEI is the solution. 2

MISSION

Self Enhancement, Inc. (SEI) is dedicated to guiding under-served youth to realize their full potential. Working with schools, families, and partner community organizations, SEI provides support, guidance and opportunities to achieve personal and academic success. SEI brings hope to individual young people and enhances the quality of community life.

WE EXIST... to provide opportunities for all so that everyone can reach their full potential.

SEI knows that for students to succeed, they need more than a drop-in, part-time program. They need support before and during class, after the bell rings, and beyond – services the public educational system just can’t afford or provide... IN-SCHOOL PROGRAM (1,242 served in 2018-19)

Our In-School Program begins with students as young as the 6th grade. Each student is matched with an In-School Coordinator who provides 24/7 case management tracking the scholastic achievement, attendance, and behavior of the student.

AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAM (1,352 served in 2018-19)

Our After-School Program offers academic support as well as exposure to a variety of classes in the areas of health and wellness, arts and performance, life skills, and leadership development.

SUMMER PROGRAM (1,433 served in 2018-19)

Each summer, we provide five to six weeks of full-day programming. Our program emphasizes academic enrichment, recreational activities, involvement in the arts, exposure to the community, and preparation for post-secondary education and employment.

SCHOOLS UNITING NEIGHBORHOODS (SUN PROGRAM) (6,634 served in 2018-19)

We manage full-service neighborhood hubs where students and families access ducational support, enrichment and recreational activities, skill development, and community involvement programs in 16 schools through contracts with Multnomah County and the City of Portland.

PARENT ENGAGEMENT PROGRAM (2,115 served in 2018-19)

We provide case management, support, and networking to address potential barriers to maintaining a healthy family environment and a positive home-school relationship.

POST-HIGH PROGRAM (560 served in 2018-19)

We continue to help our students after they graduate from high school by providing support for developing employment and career goals, entering and succeeding in college, and building financial literacy and basic life skills.

COMMUNITY + FAMILY PROGRAMS (7,737 served in 2018-19) Self Enhancement, Inc. was founded upon The SEI Standards and the preamble. Check them out on page 12!

5

Community + Family Programs (CFP) are designed to provide families with the resources, supports, and wraparound services needed to help ensure they are safe, stable, and have their critical social, emotional, and economic needs met. CFP services address economic disparities by providing a broad continuum of anti-poverty, family stabilization, and employment services that are culturally specific for African American families and/or culturally responsive for other families in need. 6

SEI encouraged me to take life more seriously and to really think about the decisions I was making. I realized that every person who has pushed me did it because they saw the potential I have, and I only needed to see it for myself. SEI has helped me not only to see my potential, but they have helped me continuously reach my potential. SEI has shown me that no matter how bad the past is, I need to push to prove it wrong.”

SUCCESS THROUGH OPTIONS What inspires a child to learn? We believe inspiration springs from some very simple fundamental beliefs: All children can learn; all children have a gift; all children can and will succeed. Turning these beliefs into a program that works requires four key elements that are absolutely essential for creating a successful youth program. CONTINUUM OF SERVICE We help kids navigate every phase of their development from 6th grade to post-secondary. THE RELATIONSHIP MODEL We work with youth wherever they are at risk - in school, at home, and in the community. COMPREHENSIVE APPROACH We build deep relationships with kids that are based on trust and mutual respect. CULTURE OF SUCCESS We cultivate a positive environment, where success is clear and attainable.

THE STANDARDS PREAMBLE The SEI Standards are founded upon the principles of integrity and respect. Integrity, because integrity exemplifies truthfulness, modesty, and trustworthiness. Respect, because respect exemplifies courtesy, honor, and reverence.

1. In SEI we greet each other every day with a smile and a handshake to strengthen the relationship between us. 2. In SEI we honor and respect each other and so we address one

another with proper language and speech. 3. In SEI we value the space of ourselves and others and are careful not to intrude or injure each other. 4. In SEI we are mindful of what is true, and strive to be honest in word and deed. 5. In SEI we treasure our rich culture and hold the cultures of all people in high regard. 6. In SEI we strive to reflect our beauty both inwardly in our understanding and outwardly in our appearance.
