EVENT CATEGORIES Engagement and Outreach
E V E N T S
SEI is a longstanding pillar in the Portland community. To that end, we often host community events targeted to the Portland community at large and not just to our direct clients. These events have grown over the decades and are great examples of SEI serving our entire community.
Education and Awareness
Despite our 40 years of service, many are still unaware of all that SEI provides for our city and state. We host awareness projects that share SEI’s successes, ongoing work and our vision towards the future. We also use these events to share topical information that is urgent and a high priority in our community.
HOW YOU CAN SUPPORT Annual Engagement and Outreach Events* Junction Ave ($12,000)
Junction Ave is a pop up to showcase Black-owned businesses in the community. Our SEI students and parents are encouraged to bring their innovations and entrepreneurial spirit to the event.
Homecoming ($30,000)
This free community event is meant to re-unite members of the community who have been relocated due to gentrification, and to be a bridge for those who are currently residing in the neighborhood.
Harvest Fest ($15,000)
Harvest Fest was created as a safe space to celebrate Halloween. We decorate the gym and atrium and create a fun space for all ages, including games, activities, and of course, tons of candy.
Thanksgiving Meal Support ($25,000)
Every year, we put together nutritional food boxes for the Thanksgiving holiday for our SEI families.
Holiday Toy Drive ($150,000)
Coordinators nominate their students to receive gifts from SEI. The gifts are curated to be age-appropriate and educational.
Annual Education and Awareness Events*
Soul of the City TV Special ($100,000)
In 2020 we hosted our first ever 1-hour primetime TV special highlighting Black Excellence in Portland, OR. The response was so positive, we decided to continue this show into the future.
The Purple Mile ($8,000)
The Purple Mile walk honors and celebrates survivors of domestic violence through awareness, reverence, and fellowship. We come together as a community in strength and love.
Year-Round Financial Literacy and Education ($30,000)
As a part of our commitment to the African American community, we have identified financial literacy as top priority. We are building a program that will educate clients and our staff about the importance of building a financially stable lifestyle that secures the future of the individual and their family. *This is not an exhaustive list of every event SEI holds annually, but a snapshot of some of our largest and longest running events.
