MESSAGE FROM THE

Rarely have we had such a challenge that brings us all to a level of humility that we are presently experiencing. This year 2020 has provided a mirror for our Nation to look at itself and for the first time maybe truly see itself. Through the Black Lives Matter movement and the ongoing pandemic, we’ve seen the worst of ourselves as Americans and we have seen the best of ourselves as Americans. As much as the Black Lives Matter movement highlights the exhausting ongoing realities around race in America, conversely, the pandemic does not consider race, religion, sexual orientation, age, or political affiliation at all. We have witnessed examples of total disrespect for human life; but we have also witnessed unbelievable sacrifice to support and save human life. So what does 2020 tell us about ourselves? First, we should all finally realize that race does matter. Second, we should understand that our humanity towards one another matters even more. The thousands of white individuals and others who joined the Black Lives Matter movement is a statement towards humanity. Finally, the pandemic leveled the playing field and impacted everyone, regardless of their money status or position, and reduced us all to our common humanity. Why is it that in the face of overwhelming adversity we often find our best selves? I believe it is because when we face a common enemy that impacts us all equally, we no longer see our differences but seek out the sameness that makes us human. In Self Enhancement, Inc. we will continue to pursue our mission of helping all our participants reach their full potential. The support we have seen during these amazing times has been extraordinary. Our goal is to learn from these moments in time, and take these lessons forward to help create a new America that leads with our humanity toward one other. It’s so simple, but it starts with you doing your part. 2020 was a scary glimpse of just how uncomfortable life can be. 2021 will bring an opportunity to go forward with new information that can make us better. Let’s celebrate our humanity through love, respect, and support for one another. The mirror on America does not lie. As you look in that mirror in 2021, what will you see? That’s the work that we all must do.

THE STANDARDS The SEI Standards are founded upon the principles of integrity and respect. Integrity, because integrity exemplifies truthfulness, modesty, and trustworthiness. Respect, because respect exemplifies courtesy, honor, and reverence. 1. In SEI we greet each other every day with a smile and a handshake to strengthen the relationship between us. 2. In SEI we honor and respect each other and so we address one another with proper language and speech. 3. In SEI we value the space of ourselves and others and are careful not to intrude or injure each other. 4. In SEI we are mindful of what is true, and strive to be honest in word and deed. 5. In SEI we treasure our rich culture and hold the cultures of all people in high regard. 6. In SEI we strive to reflect our beauty both inwardly in our understanding and outwardly in our appearance.

Martae B.

I started SEI in the 2nd grade when I was at Woodlawn Elementary. My first coordinator was Kenny McDonald, who was the best coordinator any hyper elementary kid can ask for. Immediately, SEI impacted my life at that early age up until now. They provided a second home for me, and father figures that I can now follow. My father was in and out of my life, and my mother worked two jobs to provide for me and my sisters, so I needed that level of guidance. My younger sisters and myself attended the SEI Academy, which was sixth through eighth grade. Some of the best times of my life were when I attended the school where I spent most of my time. SEI also provided me with my first job as an Elementary Summer Coach at Boise Eliot School, which is where the birth of my love for teaching youth all began. Today, I’m twenty-five years old, a retired professional football player who changed careers to education and a Behavioral Educator. I currently work at Beaumont Middle School, specifically in special education, which I love! I get to inspire and educate kids every day, and there’s no better feeling than that. That special love stems from SEI molding me into a leader in my community, and letting me know it’s bigger than me. Teaching became my passion when my role switched from being a summer coach to a Brothers Reflecting Brotherhood (BRB) teacher. I have recently been accepted into a teaching program to help me become a licensed middle school teacher. None of this would’ve been possible without SEI believing in me as an adolescent.

A Promise Neighborhood is designed to achieve ten results within a community working across a cradleto-career continuum of services and programs. The Albina Rockwood Promise Neighborhood Initiative (ARPNI) grant began in January 2019 with the goal that every child excels and every family thrives. ARPNI brings together six communitybased organizations (CBOs): Immigrant Refugee & Community Organization (IRCO), Latino Network, Native American Youth & Family Center (NAYA), Metropolitan Family Service (MFS), United Way of the Columbia-Willamette, and SEI as the lead agency. They are joined by Portland Public Schools and the Reynolds School District, serving two diverse neighborhoods: Albina and Rockwood. These neighborhoods are 22 miles apart, and were chosen due to the rapidly changing demographics as a result of gentrification.

PROMISE NEIGHBORHOOD

In August of 2018, the U.S. Department of Education awarded Self Enhancement, Inc. a $28M Promise Neighborhood grant.

ARPNI will drive equity through integrated culturally specific/ responsive cradle-to-career services that empower students and families of color to achieve academic and economic success. Underlying ARPNI is the powerful concept of cultural specificity and responsiveness in order to expand the SEI Model to other underserved

RESULTS ALL PROMISE NEIGHBORHOODS ARE WORKING TO ACHIEVE

populations. Of ARPNI’s six partners, three are culturally specific organizations and one is culturally responsive. United Way is spearheading the research component of ARPNI, surveying community members in both neighborhoods, and students in both districts. In collaboration with Portland State University, nonprofit partners, and the U.S. Department of Education, United Way developed the ARPNI surveys, aligning questions with community priorities and key programs areas, such as neighborhood safety, affordable housing, and school activities.

These culturally specific and responsive services provide holistic wraparound family supports to communities of color and families living in poverty. The program features promising-practices curricula, as well as a strong focus on building stronger cultural ethnic identity, which is tied to evidence supporting stronger academic success, increased school belongingness, and higher self-esteem, among other impactful outcomes aligned with the schools’ improvement plans and the districts’ strategic goals. In year one of this grant, the collaborative engaged in planning, hiring, and ramping up to implement services in 9 schools. Creating performance measures using a results-based accountability framework, we will be able to evaluate how much we are doing, how well we are doing it, and is anyone better off because of it. Promise Neighborhoods are data-driven, and throughout the five-year grant we will work to assess and evaluate our impact on education, family, and community supports. The data that we collect from our programs and surveys will help us strengthen our initiative and identify new strategies to better meet the needs of the students and families we serve.

OUR 2020 STORY By

Katherine Jahangiri

“At SEI, you see light, hope, and success.”

For 40 years, Self Enhancement, Inc. (SEI) has stood as a bridge, providing opportunities for youth and families to come together to realize their full potential. At SEI, you see light, hope, and success. The kind of success that not only uplifts the children and families we serve, but creates a safe platform for growth and understanding between all races. Today, the need for SEI has never been clearer, and what SEI represents is critical to repair the fraying fabric of our daily lives. This year has not looked like what we thought it would, between a pandemic that threatens the vitality of our community, to a reckoning of racial justice across the United States. We have seen and felt the effects of these unparalleled challenges on an exhausted, but resilient community in search of hope, peace, support, and solutions.

Through it all, our organization responded to the unique needs of the Black community in Portland by doing what we have always done: brilliantly adapting and rising to the occasion. When the pandemic closed schools and our facilities, we switched to virtual delivery of our existing programs and filled service gaps wherever our community needed us to show up. Since June, we have offered the first-ever completely free COVID-19 testing site in Portland to the Black community, successfully reaching over 679 people. Even amid a global health crisis, we could not allow the school year to end without celebrating our 2020 graduates and providing fun for all the students we serve. We also created and launched our first virtual summer programming experience, and opened it up to students and families across the city and county, bringing over 30 classes like gardening, dance with the Oregon Ballet Theatre, and so much more to help ensure the safety and comfort of their homes.

To say that everything looks different than it did a year ago is an understatement. For the first time in SEI history, we planned and held our largest annual fundraising event this summer on TV, thanks to the creative partnership of KATU. Instead of the black-tie gala featuring live speakers, performances, and inspirational guest speakers such as Laila Ali that kicked off fall 2019, this past August we shared our stories across the airwaves, hoping to inspire our donors, community, and students to see that nothing is impossible, even in times like these. Once each crisis has passed, SEI has returned to helping students and their families navigate the new, foreseeable normal. For some, this shift has been an inconvenience at best, but for our students, this new landscape comes with economic barriers. Students without access to the internet, technology, and already complex success plans now face a challenge that threatens their academic achievement. Though we are left wondering what normal will ever look like again, one thing is for certain: We are still here! We’re still here because you’ve been here – helping us every step of the way. From all of us at SEI, thank you for giving us your time, talent, and treasure and for joining us as part of the solution. This Annual Report highlights the incredible work you have helped us achieve this year, and we hope you read it with a sense of pride, hope, and purpose – knowing what you have helped accomplish.

“Once each crisis has passed, SEI has returned to helping students and their families navigate the new, foreseeable normal.”

AFTERWORD BY

e d r o F a r b i L In the 20th-century story for SEI, we have been trailblazers in the culturally specific community-based work, and we are grateful for the collaboration of our donors and funders on all levels. Every effort, every moment, every touch matters. Thank you! It is now time to work on leading this community towards the 21st-century story. We all know that we do not read history the way we live it. A pandemic and civil unrest are going to be the lived experiences of the youth and families we serve and employ. SEI must and will not only serve with excellence as we all live this history, but, we also will be intentional about how our voices are embedded in this story when it is read by many in the future. We look forward to continuing to elevate the voices of our community at tables we occupy to ensure advancements in social service systems, practices, and processes. This work is hard because it matters. These uncertain times have shown us that our work matters more than ever before. We will continue to keep our feet on the ground, our heads high, and our hands in touch as we expand and grow our approaches to this work. At SEI, we are confident that the history we live will be read by the future as heart-centered, heuristic, and hope-filled. We welcome all who would join us in living a great history that will be told! Much Love and Gratitude, SELF ENHANCEMENT, INC. IS THE PROUD RECIPIENT OF
