GOING HAM (RADIO, THAT IS)
Joey Nichols discovered the world of radio as a young child. His friend had a CB (Citizen Band) radio that they would use to talk to others in the local area. It didn’t take him long to become interested in the mechanics of how you can talk to someone by transmitting from one antenna to another. Because of his growing interest in radio, fellow CB radio friends introduced him to the world of Amateur Radio (aka Ham Radio). Ham Radio allowed him to communicate with people at a greater distance.
In the world of ham radio, there are 3 classes of licenses. At the age of 14, he became a Technician Class Amateur Radio Operator. By November of 2017, he had upgraded to the highest class, Amateur Extra Class.
Joey talks about how ham radio becomes a way of life. In fact, it is interesting how Amateur Radio Operators have formed their own unique community. When they meet someone new to ham radio, they all pitch in to teach them the craft. They have even created their own code of conduct to help maintain order among the radio waves.
Through ham radio, Joey has had the opportunity to meet people of all different ages and from around the world. He has joined different amateur radio clubs and serves as a member of the Amateur Radio Emergency Service that volunteers with the Hall County Emergency Operation Center. He even participates in contests such as who can contact the most countries. Therefore, he is constantly searching for a rare island or country that he can find and contact.
“It’s just part of who I am ... it becomes a lifestyle,” he says.

EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT
Karla Dubon has worked at MSA for 17 years. When she started, she worked on second shift in the Duramark section. Throughout the years, she has worked in multiple areas and now works as an Assembly Team Lead. She loves her job and says her favorite part of working at MSA is the team that she has the privilege of working with.
WELCOME NEW
EMPLOYEES
“I love and appreciate my crew. Everyone in my section is gifted and talented. If they don’t know something, they are willing to ask questions and allow you to show them,” says Karla. An interesting fact about Karla is that she was born in El Salvador. She moved to the United States when she was 8 years old and lived in Las Vegas until she moved to Georgia. She met her husband, Dillon, at MSA and they married in November of 2019. Her eyes light up when she talks about her husband, children (Geoffrey, Madelyn, Kimberly, and Oliver) and grandchildren (Victoria and Adrien). She hopes to one day travel with them to El Salvador to show them where she grew up. When she is not working, she enjoys gardening, spending time with her family and serving at her church.
HAPPY RETIREMENT
Rita Stancil and Starr Hurley both retired on March 10 after many years with MSA. Rita started at MSA almost 36 years ago, when she decided to follow in her father’s footsteps. Throughout the years, she has worked a bit of everywhere including the Assembly, Pack, Shipping and Quality departments. “The people were my favorite part. I am going to miss everyone,” says Rita.
Starr Hurley began working at MSA 23 years ago after her sister, who worked in the paint room, told her about a job opening. She worked in the Quality Department as a Quality Auditor. Starr says that Rita was her favorite part about working here. “Rita has always had my back 100 percent and without her I couldn’t have made it,” Starr says.
Both ladies plan to stay busy in their retirement and already have trips planned. MSA will miss them both dearly and we hope they enjoy retirement!

AUTO BAGGER
If you haven’t noticed, there is a new addition in the Pack Department!
Since May 1st, packaging of all Stainless Steel Gripper® Snap Fastener Sockets, along with some DOT products, transitioned to heat sealed plastic bags. It has increased our efficiency for packaging our products into 1,000 pack.
This new addition has the potential to save an estimated cost savings of $0.15 per thousand in packaging savings. After all the Stainless Steel Gripper and DOT products have been moved over to the auto bagger, the plan is to look at other opportunities to use this new piece of equipment.
