A FLIGHT OF FANCY At 7:30 am on a Tuesday morning, Tim Gago, tool and die maker, releases 18 female racing pigeons from the bed of his truck in the MSA parking lot. The birds will fly 34 air miles in 35 minutes, and with the help of his neighbor, be safely in their coop in Tim’s backyard in East Hall long before he returns home from work.

Tim’s road to Clarkesville, Georgia began 44 years ago while working at PCI in Rhode Island. He re-located to Georgia after MSA purchased PCI and manufacturing operations were consolidated into the Clarkesville location in 1996. He and wife, Sally, have been married 45 years and share one son and two grandchildren. It could be said their love is “for the birds,” since they also share a history of racing pigeons.

Having being exposed to pigeon racing while living in New Bedford, MA at age 9, Tim’s father built him his first coop in the family’s backyard at age 10. At 13 he met his now-wife, whose uncle also had birds, while working as a loft manager for a neighbor’s birds. Tim began competing in races that same year and since then has won 7 national awards.

Being a Fancier (a pigeon enthusiast) is not as easy as it sounds. Each bird is outfitted with a chip on its leg and use the sun and earth’s microwave signals to navigate. Fanciers teach birds to navigate by flying in an ever-widening range using conditioning and mental orientation. When racing, birds are judged on distance and time after landing on a platform that contains an electronic module that records the chip.

Husbandry is the care, cultivation and breeding of these birds and Tim views them as athletes. He says the life expectancy of a pigeon is 17-20 years, while their racing career is only 5. The best performers then become breeders. His highest performing bird, Euro, was the 2nd best long-distance in the country. Euro fathered 12 championship birds after retirement and his granddaughter went on to win the $1M Hoosier Classic.

If you ever have the opportunity to watch him release his birds, you’ll find Tim is very passionate and knowledgeable about this fascinating breed of birds that dates back to the 1700’s in Belgium.

Congratulations to Kristie Thornton, Kim Brookshire and Linda Perry for winning 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in the Valentines Day Cupcake Contest.

Jerry Davis, Liz Holcomb and Kristie Thornton were named the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners in the Easter Contest. There were so many wonderful coloring pages by the amazing children and grandchildren of MSA associates that it was hard to choose just one in each age category! Congratulations to age group 1–4 winner Iker Figuerea, 5–9 winner Nolan McEntire, 10–15 winner Knox Anderson and 16–18 winner Taylor Lowery.

220 YEAR LOGO CONTEST We’ve received some very creative contest entries and are impressed by our talented associates! Remember, the winning logo will be used in several different mediums – from social media and printed material to clothing, video, etc. Best of all, one winner will receive a $220 gift card, so get those entries in soon!

The contest is open to all MSA associates and the submission deadline is Friday, April 29, 2022 at 5:00 pm. Entries will be judged on visual appeal, adherence to the concept prompting the contest, quality of design and ease of reproduction by two MSA associates and two Habersham County community members.

EMPLOYEE APPRECIATION The 2020–2022 Employee Appreciation Celebration is scheduled for May 11th on the front lawn of MSA. We can’t wait to celebrate all of our wonderful employees!

PURCHASE – Items will be available for purchase at MSA’s cost. Simply fill out an order form and the cost of the item will be deduced from your next paycheck. Note – items are not available for purchase with cash or card at this time.

MID-YEAR FINANCIAL UPDATE

The hard work of each and every one of our amazing associates has been apparent as we have begun reducing the number of past due orders caused by metal shortages.

Your dedication shows in the fact that our 1st half revenue of the 2022 fiscal year is in line with the projected budget plan. As well, our operating income has exceeded the plan by approximately 40%. Both of these positive outcomes have put us in a favorable position to reach our year end goal.

Along with a significant reduction in past due orders, the 2nd half revenue of the 2022 fiscal year has been forecast at 5% over the budgeted plan. Although the biggest challenge remains the cost of raw materials, our operating income has been forecast to exceed the plan.

Our future looks bright as we move into the 2nd half of 2022. Morito Japan and MSA remain committed to rewarding all of our associates for their dedication with a profit sharing pay out once we have exceeded our operating income target.
